Will there be a Arlington vs. WP Bowl Game? Rye vs. Lakeland?

  8. football gods

    dcftball

Its Arlington vs Mount Vernon Thursday at Arlington at 6pm hopefully this will shed some light on the North vs South dilemma.

  9. football gods

Kevin, can you post the Schedule for the rest of the bowl games

  10. blue60

    Scary

It’s a total shame that JJEF is not playing in the Championship. Probably the best .500 team in the State. Arlington, Carmel, New Rochelle and North Rockland all losses separated by one or two plays. Dutchess teams have nothing to prove JJEf blew Suffern off the field yesterday. They should get another shot at Arlington. The Northern Section One teams are here to stay. Also congrats to Poughkeepsie. The Rye bubble has burst. They have an awesome program but moving to the next level makes difference. In August I even had some people on this blog actually think Rye could compete with AA teams. It just doesn’t work that way in FOOTBALL.

  11. true story

    dcftball,

rya and lakeland do not have a bowl game…both of their seasons are over…too bad we couldnt see garr blame the officials one last time this year though

  12. Power House

New Rochelle Vs. North Rockland Isn’t going to be high scoring like some of you think it will be.

This game is more like a 14-13 or 17-7 or 10-7 type of Game.

  13. Domination

Blue 60 Rye can compete with AA squads. One loss to a good Pougheekpsie team does not negate the fact that they are good enough to play with the big boys. The fact of the matter is , this rye team was very over hyped, and not as good as people people will admit. They beat some good teams, and were a couple blown calls away from being in their 8th straight Section One championship game. They are the best team in section one Class A this year, but they won’t be in Mahopac to prove it. But you would be crazy to say that the rye teams of the past, would not be able to compete with the bigger schools. Blue 60 just go away.

  14. Husky 92

Rye, welcome to Class A. Has anyone heard of Kev lately. I think he is sitting on a park bench wondering how his dear ole team Rye lost and Iona won. LMAO

  15. John Nugent

In 2007 Sleepy Hollow was the most talented team in classes C-A. Rye beat them twice, once in convincing Fashion. In 2005 Rye was arguably the best Team in all of the State regarding all classifactions. They finished the season at 12-0, and were Ranked 109th in the Country. In 2006 Rye beat Harrison, who was the #1 Team in all of Class A, in the whole state. In 2008, Rye had the depth of a AA team, and was arguably one of the best Rye teams ever to grace the John Nugent turf. In my opinion 2005 was just a tad better. They would have competed and arguably won the Section one title over Nyack. They finished around 200th in the country that season. To say that Rye fans are crazy for saying their team can compete with the big boys is just dumb. They have a right to say that kind of stuff, look at their body of work. Yes there first season, in Class A did not live up to Rye standards, but with what Coach Garr had to work with and what he accomplished with this team is great. They were defitanly not as talented as years past and it hurt in the end.

  16. true story

    domination,

how can you say that? rye is the bast team in class A obviously not, they arent in the championship. now how many best teams dont win it all?...none

  17. STEW

I like the class C match up for Croton, but there going to have to throw the ball more to that Joe Tralli Kid, he’s like money in the bank! The kid is so athletic and catches everything! They need to get him the ball more(short and long)and also get his brother Matt the ball outside and around that huge line! Hit Soares on some screen passes out of the shot gun and this can be a game Bronxville may go DOWN!

  18. Yesterdays Children

Rye will go the way of Edgemont, mark my words. Two powerhouse programs who stepped up in class, never to play anywhere near the same championship level again. The end of an era.

  19. GARNETS94

Rye lost on the last play.. now they are not a good team.. Did anyone who is talking crap, ever see Pough. Play.. did you see the game? Watch it on Monday MSG channel 14 and tell me what you think of #55 #7 #90 #35 .. Those players are some of the best players in any section. They will beat Roosevelt.. give Pough credit.. annoying bloggers who know nothing about football. Welcome to CLASS A Yipee. .how many times are you going to use that line.

  20. Call me CRazy

Rye was the Best team in A, and they would have been for the last few years as well, but sometimes the better teams do get beat. It happens, thats sports, and thats why they play the games.
Rye has an excellent program in the younger levels and they teach the kids the game and the fundamentals. They have great coaching and a lot of talent that is coming back still. Eck is the best pure QB in the state, and next year hell be back to lead his team on another run to the dome. Early Prediction Rye 2010 Class A State Champs. This team is here to stay in Class A just watch.

  21. Just a fact

    Blue 60,

Suffern was without their star player DiMarsico. JJEF beat a very different Suffern team then the Suffern team that played North Rock. It took 4 quarters for North Rock to finally beat Suffern. Just a reminder, it took 4 quarters for North Rock to beat JJEF I might add.

Bottom line, Suffern had no depth at the RB position to replace DiMarsico. As previously stated, Suffern was pretty much a one man team, so do not put too much stock in that JJEF win over Suffern.

With that said JJEF is the real deal. I love their style of football. Very similar to North Rock. In my book JJEF is tied with Arlington for third in AA.

  22. Just a fact

    Call me crazy,

Good point! The best teams do not always win. That is why it is head scratching with all these POK and Roosevelt fans going nuts. But I am a firm believer, to the Victor goes the Spoils. So all you POK and Roosevelt fans go nuts with the bragging, you earned it!

My case in point, look at the Giants win over the Patriots two Super Bowls ago. Play that game ten times, Patriots win at least 8 times. Just a …......Opinion!

  23. statesman

    Garnets954,
Thank you for the kind words. It is a shame someone had to lose that epic battle. This was the programs first match ups. It would have been great to see them back in the day but hopefully this is the beggining of a nice NEW rivavlry. We can use some of those. Roosevelt has more talent, but with speed schools- I think PK has more discipline and knoweldge od the game than anyone with the exception of New Ro. PK has killed Mount Vernon and Gorton in the past. They are the only two teams that resemble Roosevelts team that I can remember. IT sohuld be a great championship to both teams. PK isnt a new face, but its been 6 Years since they’ve been here. I hope for a big game, with PK being the victor b/c you know I’m biased. Everyone, be well

  24. true story

    Class D

    bowl game
    Ossining-35 Somers-21

  25. rocket

Im just happy to see PK and Roosevelt. Nobody cared about these teams, nobody talked about them and they barely had a voice on the blog. They were just the teams with ‘speed’ but not enough to make it to the big game.

PK is in Dutchess (out of Journal News main coverage), and Roosevelt is in Yonkers..one of the most negatively talked about places on this blog. Yonkers gets no love and PK might as well be in another country to most people in Weschester. But these two teams quietly won games and proved why football is won on the FIELD..and not on paper. Congrats to all the Section 1A teams that fought hard. But I’m excited to see two underdogs fighting for the chip! Good luck to both teams!

  26. sunshine

who is stepinac fordham iona and mount playing in the first round?

  27. Jax

wait why isnt rye playing a bowl game?

  28. Rye

Is it true that Rye will not be playing Lakeland this week?

AA – New Ro over North rock
    A – POK over Roosevelt
    B – Nanuet over Sleepy
    C – Bxville over Croton
    D – Tuckahoe over Haldane

  31. true story

it is true that rye and lakeland will not be playing each other. their seasons are over. thats the way section 1 works. you lose in the semi”s you”re done. you lose in the quarter-finals you could play 2 more games, until championship weekend

  32. true story

jax i thought you would know that

  33. Rileygirl

John Nugent, I thought they were 111th in the country. Get a grip please. Those rankings mean nothing. Kev Devaney has Iona Prep ranked 4th in the nation, they are 3-8

  34. Blog will perish

Please Rye bloggers let it go.

  35. mountie

    Blue 60,

just want to let you know we are proud of our mountie team. they played JJEF without 7 starters (injuries) QB’s 1 and 2 both out and QB3 had a death in the family. Our WR stepped up and Quarterbacked even though in his 10 years of playing football that was the one position he had never played. They went up to JJ and played like men instead of forfeting and for that we are proud!

  36. scottinrye

I hope that section 1 enjoys all those empty seats next Saturday at Mahopac

I figure on a crowd of about 300.

I can only hope that the same crew that did such a wonderful job at Rye can also work this epic clash of the titans.

Yawn, wake me up for 2010.

  37. Jeff P.

Rocket, you pretty much nailed it… Ultimately, we’re all just a bunch of people who love HS football more than most of the general population of New York State… Sure, we love talking about how great the teams we support are/were, but it’s the players who decide the outcomes of the games.

Good luck to all of of the teams fortunate enough to make it to Mahopac, but I’ve got to roll with Poughkeepsie…

    P.S. If you’re out there, Kevin, I ain’t mad at ya. :)

  38. Sweet Home 2009

well just checking out other sections in the state ,while not being funny or nothing but we dont care what team u guys send up it can be RYE its game over nice run but it stops here lol LOL, nah but from what i see sect.1 best chance is Pok while they have a bad O their Defense is one of the best ur gonna see in the state no lie, that second half at rye was lockdown D at its best and Roos doesnt play that kind of defense we’ll stop their two man O any day. Good luck getting past burnt hills to get to us. see u at the dome

  39. Jeff P.

Glad you decided to drop by, Sweet Home, but shouldn’t you guys be more concerned about beating Grand Island for the Section 6 title? First things first…

  40. oldnintheway

Poughkeepsie scores on a 49 yard pass play as time expires and now the nay-sayers are out saying Class A is too much for Rye? You know who Rye would be playing for the title next week? A team they pasted by three TD’s. This is just competitive playoff football. Granted, there are a few more threats at the A level, but anyone who picked Rye to win the section made an intelligent, well-informed pick. The PO/Roosevelt game oughta be a great watch. Basketball on turf!

  41. MDALE

Roosevelt will win this game because stars win big games! Dave, Donovan, and AJ took them this far and will not let down now. I do think it will be a close game but I have to stick with my boys here:

    Roose – 27
    POK – 22

I will bet my life that Kev will pick POK to win that game. I wouldn’t want it any other way!!!

  42. statesman

    MDALE,

I think Kev will flip a coin on this one, lol. He doesnt know what to do- 2 Teams he’s been picking against for the longest haha

  43. Coach

    Enough about Rye!!!!!

They lost, they are a great team that missed 1 tackle from being in the finals!!! Let the kids be , please!!!!!
Give the teams who made the finals the respect they deserve and leave the blogs open to discussions about those 4 games..

I don’t care if Rye plays harrison or if Mamaroneck plays Port chester or if Eastchester plays Pelham….. the fact is that New Ro, North rock, Pough, Roose, Nanuet, Sleepy, Croton, Bronxville, all made the finals to represent section 1 in the state tournament. ( i left out tuck and haldane because they were guaranteed spots in the finals)

  44. Section1Coach

Anyone else hear that the Roos vs. PK game was moved to 5 pm? I noticed one person did, but haven’t seen any other responses. Thanks

  45. statesman

I wish it gets moved to 8 if you ask me.

  46. rocket

    Jeff P,

Yeah, Ive got to roll with POK too. I was at the game in 03 against Nyack. We never really seemed to have control in that game. 02 was a closer game with Irv Williams, Shonda Faulkner, Melshawn Smith and Steve Whitlow. I think this is our opportunity though. But Roosevelts playmakers are dangerous..but so are ours.

    MDale, Statesman

I hope Pk is the lohud blog underdog. However Roosevelt will be the “home” team/higher seed because of their record. Its a battle of two underdogs. What makes it worse it that one is from Dutchess County and the other is from Yonkers. The least ‘significant’ places according to most bloggers. Good luck to both teams. Go PK!

  47. All the rye fans

All the Rye fans are correct, Rye is the best team in section one. Even with a record of 6-2. Who was the best team in class B last year Pleasantville? I think they had two loses also.

And stop the complaining already, the game is 48 mins in length, not 47 mins and 52 seconds. Rye CHOKED big time. Playing a full game and seeing good teams consistently wound up hurting them. This is not class B. Fools.
Boy oh boy if i were a Rye player i would not be able to sleep for the next nine months.

  48. hollow fan

Wow you guys all have Nanuet killing Sleepy huh? They are going to shock the world saturday night…

  49. oldnintheway

    Hey Sweet Home:

What’s Burnt Hills’ average marging of victory this year, aboout 65 points? Do they ever actually PLAY anybody in the regular season?

    Dear Supervisor Schmidt,

I have been having a problem with one of my employees.
I feel that as Carmel Town Supervisor and also with your background as a former Town Detective you should have the definitive opinion on this problem that I am anticipating in the near future.
Are there any laws on the books in Putman County prohibiting the sacraficing of a live chicken within the Township of Carmel, New York?

Your reply is needed before Saturday November 7,2009.

Any assistance you can give in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

  51. hollow fan

what the hell does that mean???

  52. everything would be different

I know my eagles are out of the playoffs and with the team we had against roose we didnt deserve to be, but imagine if kevin bronner wasnt hurt. I believe Eastchester is in the playoffs and roose, a championship team-out. Also, The eagles were able to beat the other championship team pok even with fumbling 8 times. Congrats to all teams who made the playoffs and especially to the two teams in the championship and im not taking anything away from you. But im just saying, With Kevin Bronner suited up for eastchester, we have a very different playoff.

I believe this also shows how strong the south league was. I think everyone can vouch for that. the two teams in the bowl game: eastchester and harrison, both in the south and if they were in other leagues would be in the playoffs. And it would have been rye and roose in the finals if it werent for a late second bomb. im not a sore loser cause i respect the teams that won the big game and are in the playoffs, im just giving everyone food for thought

  53. Go eagles

A bunch of teams could have won it this year. Eastchester’s 9 best guys went both ways, including the QB, and it took a toll. They were as good as anyone out there but injuries are part of the game.

Got to root for POK this week. A classy group of kids there. Lots of heart. Roosevelt has some great skill players, but I think POK will win.

  54. coach d

    Bram Bones…

What are you talking about? Please explain or somebody else fill me in.

    Thanks

  55. ?

rye fans are worse then iona fans. rye just face it, you moved up a level, lost 2 games and got bumped in the semi-finals….next!!!

  56. WingTGuy

    Oldintheway,

Burnt Hills had the same situation last year and played Nyack and Sweet Home really tough. They are a solid program and have quite a few good players back from last year. Their toughest match up is this coming weekend against Troy. The winner of that game will be waiting in the semis for the winner of 9 and 1.

Don’t count either of these teams out. They will be a real test for whoever makes it.

Burnt Hills is well coached and very disciplined. They ran a version of the power I last year and had a very effective power sweep to both sides of the field. Troy is very athletic and has a solid backfield. They have yet to be tested in my opinion. I believe they play on Saturday night in what Section 2 calls the Superbowl.

I may go up to see the game, if our A championship is the early game.

  57. li football

No friday or early Sat games are probably because this week many kids take the SAT’s.

  58. Class A Fan

Heres what i have to say: RYe get over it you lost to Poughkeepsie and you also lost to Eastchester to snap ur 59 game winning streak. But now that i have got that off my chest, Rye is and still is the one of the best programs in section 1 football. they were a little overated this year but they were an extremely talented team. Poughkeepsie was also a great team who has a few great players this year which is also sad because in a year or two they are going to be back to the joke of class a again. Poughkeepsie also suffered a loss to eastchester which is ironic that rye also lost to them. Roosevelt is extremely talented and has such a dynamic offense that i dont think i could see them losing but who knows. And heres somethign to add Roosevelt beat eastchester(which is the common factor amongst these 3 teams). I see Roosevelt winning because of that interesting factor. But now that im done.. can every team in class a safely say that they all hate harrison? i think the answer is yess.

  59. ????

Does anyone have any clue as to what “Bram Bone’s” is talking about?

    Live chickens? Carmel? Huh?????

  60. Geeeez.

Are Rye fans in loser denial mode. YOU LOST!!! Your season is over, betterluck next year. If you guys lost on the last play of the game, then you are not that good. On paper you lost, c ya next year. If you Rye fans want, you can come see HHS vs. EHS and you can sit and watch the best Class A game for the weekend…

  61. Mountie Hoops

    Just a Fact,

while Dimarsico was one of the most electric players in Section 1 and could of been a super 11 pick(1st team Rockland County All-County as a junior as an athlete)and was a MAJOR part of our team(#1running back,#2 QB,starting safety, and kick returner(avg over 24 yds a return before getting hurt)...as well as a leader)we were hurt by injuries and life circumstances big time…and no this isn’t sour grapes JJEF is a solid team and i think(in my opinion) stronger than Arlington…JJEF was ready and gave us a whomping but our boys hung tough never gave up and our star WR(who was voted all section pre season and had an avg of over 16.4 a catch) stepped to the coaches challenge this week and stepped in at QB-just look at the film and see Nick’s stiff arms, refusal to go down and 55 yd scrambles to net 3yds-the kid left it on the field…and yes we were down 7 starters but once again JJEF deserved the win…when you start the season with 33 players and are going against teams 55-65 deep you hope everyone will stay healthy and when you are down to 25 players in AA its tough but Suffern won’t back down from the challenge!!..thanks for the kind words Mr just a fact

  62. HSFB Guy

The odd thing about that rye not having a bowl game is kinda the opposite of the olden days…and I dont mean old old I mean early 2000’s like 2002. usually the teams who missed the playoffs didn’t play another 2-3 games, some played maybe one and were done. The teams that lost first round of playoffs were also done, only the final four were guaranteed games. The two semi winners would meet in the section I finals, while the two semi losers would be in the third place bowl. Class C had a third place bowl in 2002-2004 which at one point was sponsored by DCSports.com.

So to say Rye and Lakeland are done yet all these other non playoff teams or one and done teams get to play the weekend of november 7th futher showcases the scheduling and rules made by the league-a joke.

Someone mentioned the Edgemont teams of the late 90s…that is an eerie comparison right now. Edgemont won in Class C, only to go up in class to B. They were competitive (playoff bound, etc) in Class B but never won the title. Only time will tell, but Rye Fans don’t just brush aside this history lesson…you never know what will happen down the road. Edgemont did not see multiple sub .500 teams since 2003…especially when it was in the Class B semis around that time.

I dont think its gonna be a sleeper in any class..you see when a team makes mahopac, especially after a long hiatus from the title game, the entire school will have fans and family be up there. I was at the C and B finals last November…I saw Westlake and Croton overspill onto the fence along the track. THen Rye vs Pleasantville was represented by the Panthers. Alot of Green and White showed up from Mt Pleasant to cheer on their team.

So just thinking this Weekend will be horrible b/c no rye, no harrison, no big name schools is so selfish and narrow-minded a ban should be put on blogging. The blogging should be about Roosevelt and Pok who both had strong years. Rye is a good team, but to say they are the BEST team when they didn’t even pass the semis is a bit overconfident as well. Best doesn’t always mean your record from 1999-present. It usually defines the team that wins the title and awards and has a significant longer journey than the team that lost mid way.

Would it hurt to root for another team since your team isn’t playing games of playoff implication? I guess the Pride is too much to accept another team…instead lets sit around and complain about a loss..instead of celebrating and cheering on the winners of these games as they represent lower new york state in the state tourney.

  63. John Nugent

Is the World Series the Same without the Yankees? No its not , that is exactly what its like when Rye is knocked out. Its not the same, of couse the kids over at Roosevelt and PK are getting a great experience, but it just wont be the same without Rye. Theres something about seeing that team cloaked in black ready to take care of business at their home away from home.

  64. Blog will perish

John Nugent let it go. Don’t compare the Rye High School football program to the Yankees. They are kids. It was an awesome run, it is over. It may happen again in the future, for the 2009 season the Rye team will have to pay for tickets to the section finals and sit with the rest of us fans. Please stop with the posts.

  65. WingTGuy

John Nugent and Scott in Rye,

You are the only ones who are not excited about the sectional finals. You are both ridiculous. If you aren’t interested in Section 1 football, then get off the blogs and wait until next year when Rye is still playing.

I am a Nyack fan and I went to the PK/Rye game on Friday night and will be at Mahopac on Saturday. I would rather see Nyack play, but they are not in the mix, so I will go and cheer on the Section 1 teams at Mahopac.

If you can’t do the same then wait til next year. Rye has a great football tradition, but some of their fans are really ridiculous.

To compare Rye to the Yankees is just plain dumb and besides if the Mets were in the series it would be just as exciting…

  66. Just a fact

    HSFB Guy,

If your logic was correct, then the best teams would always win, and there would not be such a word as…...UPSETS!!!!

  67. Just a fact

    Mountie Hoops,

Suffern did have a great year. Unlike any other of recent memory. I hope this is an indication of where the Suffern football program is going. We know Suffern is good at Hockey, but it was nice see Suffern do something in football this year.

As for the Suffern team going up to JJEF and playing with heart, Suffern kids always play with HEART. Even in their worst of years, Suffern players do not back down from no one. I have seen it first hand.

To the entire Suffern Football Team, Congrats again on a Great Season!

  68. WingTGuy

I have not seen Roosevelt play. We have been hearing about their big three.

There must be some other players to talk about on their team. How is their line play? Their defense?

It sounds like this game is going to be very interesting from an offensive standpoint.

PK will be able to score but can they score enough and stop Roosevelt? If the Roosevelt/Rye game is any indication, PK will need to score a lot of points to beat them.

  69. Mountie Hoops

Thanks for the kind words & while you say we are great in hockey..let me tip you our girls sports are up there 2….2009 girls field hockey #1 in state and 23 in nation….girls Xc always top 20 in state….girls lax-section 1 fav and girls basketball-2008-9 1st league title in 30 years….

If Rye played Poughkeepsie 100 more times i would pick Rye every single time. The better team did lose but, you can’t take anything away from Poughkeepsie. Great job fellas now just focus on Roosevelt because they are just as tough. Does anyone know the score of Ossining Fox Lane?

  71. statesman

Can we just please move on. I’m hearing in 2 years PK will be the joke of Class A again when their JV just went 8-0. There are grown men taking this way more seriously than the kids. Remember its about the kids, get on with life. Rye will be working hard in the off-season like they always do. They will be beasts next year, we know. Until then God Speed

  72. scottinrye

Remember, Rye scored 49 points on the Roosevelt defense, and could have honestly scored more. This game is over by halftime. 56-6 POK, don’t forget you fellow bloggers have been mentioning that speed kills.

Roosevelt is talented but thin on players, with a coach who puts them in an up-tempo, no-huddle offense.

At leat they will get a participation medal from the good folks at Section 1.

    No chance

  73. bigdaddy

i still think rye is the best in A, they lost on some crazy plays in the 4th quarter, they destroyed roosevelt who is in the final, dont know why people are talking like rye was taught a lesson in A this year.

  74. Class A Fan

    Scottin Rye:

Your argument is valid but heres another fact to think about Rye only scored 7 points on Eastchester, and Roosevelt scored 22 on Eastchester. And Eastchester beat Rye, but lost to Roosevelt. Even tho eastchester had alot of injuries vs Roosevelt they still lost, no excuses.

  75. CSAH

The better team never loses. That saying is crap.

  76. Memories

Rye Football as we know it,is over, stick a fork in,done, finished.See ya next season,Harrison is waiting.

  77. Just a fact

    Class A,

I was at the Roosevelt Eastchester game. Though this is pure speculation, if Eastchester has Bronner, the game is a blow out. I do not know how many points a demoralized Roosevelt would have put up on Eastchester. I know the skeptics are going to say the woulda, coulda, comments, but here are the facts. With Bronner, Eastchester, beat the best team in Class A this year(Rye) and one of the teams going to the Class A Championships(POK). The other team going to the Class A Championships(Roosevelt), we will never know what would have happened if Bronner played in that game.

But since some of the bloggers continue to dismiss the impact Bronner would have had on that Eastchester Roosevelt game, it has to be one of two things. Either they know absolutely nothing about football, which I do not think is the case. Or two, they are taking the fact Eastchester lost the game to Roosevelt and spinning it to make their arguments.

Best team in Class A this year was Rye. The Class A Champions will be either Roosevelt or POK. Best team does not always win!

  78. MDALE

Just a Fact – Thats a good point about Bronner except for the fact Eastchester lost to Harrison and yes you had Bronner that game. Roosevelt slammed Harrison and could have scored more so what do you have to say about that??? Dont you think that Roosevelt would have game planned to stop Bronner. Guess we will never know???

Scottinrye – Yes Rye did score 49 points on Roosevelt but did you know that they had 2 D-Linemen out of that game? For a team that only has 25 players that is a big deal. Both # 51 who is there best lineman and I think #52 were not in that game. This is the reason I wanted Rye to win because I know Roosevelt would have gave Rye a game. Now even if we win I have to hear you annoying Rye people say “well you never beat Rye so your not really Champs!”

  79. MDALE

Also Kev you need to get on these game times. I also have heard that the Roosevelt game is 5:00 and NOT 2:00. Is this true?

  80. Riverindian

    just a fact,

I feel if Dakota did not get hurt that Ossining would have been undefeated an class A champs. What’s the point of the what ifs? Eastchester didn’t make it move on. There’s always next year.

  81. Spectator

Roosevelt by 2 touchdowns, i dont think any team in A can stop their offense.

New Ro by 17 points, maybe more. No Roc’s offense is not dynamic enough to move the ball on offense against the new ro D. Trying to ram it down their throats wont work.

    Bronxville in a close one.

    Tuckahoe and and nanuet

  82. Jim

I think that just about everyone who posts about who is the best team in Class A is out of their gord. Every team has injuries. The teams that overcome these injuries are the best teams. Bronner? Degree? 2 Roosevelt linemen? McCormack and three other starters were on the sideline during the fourth quarter for Rye last week….again so what? if Roosevelt wins…which I highly doubt…nobody from Rye will come on and say they are not the A Champions because they lost to Rye. Only an idiot like the person who made that comment…MDALE….would make that kind of statement. I believe his last words of wisdom were in regard to the incident when his team smashed $600 worth of windows in the locker room at Rye whwn things weren’t going their way. MDALE called Rye “racist” for turning Roosevelt in…said “they never would have done that to Scarsdale” then added that Rye was just jealous of Mike Meade, who had been chosen by the Jets as coach of the week. Nobody cares what anyone thinks regarding who is the best. The team that wins will wear the crown….for some of the idiots who have been knocking Rye…that have been waiting years to knock Rye…Rye players, coaches, fans and alumni understand what it feels like to wear that crown and will congratulate whoever wins it this year, and look forward to wearing it again. No one goes to the dome every year. The run is over…for now. For those of you that think the Rye glory days are over…you may want to review the football records that go back to 1929…Rye has NEVER had consecutive losing seasons during this 80 year period. They didn’t start getting good in 2003. They’ve been good since 1929. Rye will be back on top …this time in Class A…sooner than most people think.

  83. true story

    neutral fan,

    Ossining beat Fox Lane 21-7

  84. 09

The same people asking people to stop talking about Rye, are the ones saying Class A is too much for Rye. Is that a joke? They lost on a miracle 49 yard TD pass to POK. They spanked Roosevelt, Roosevelt’s glad they don’t have to get spanked by Rye again. There was nothing over rated about this rye team. They could have played anybody in the section. Lets be real about this please. Your an idiot if you think class A is too much for Rye.

  85. Three peat

Harrison-Rye is going to be a good one next year. I think Harrison will be the favorite, for the first time in I don’t know how long.

  86. Just a fact

    Jim,

talking about “which team is the best” is ONE of the reasons the blog exists and is so sucessful, don’t you think? No offense, but the blog is not here just to here about what happened in 1961 with Rye. Those are stories that are great and is PART of the reason why the blog is successful. But i it were just those stories, there would be about 10 hits a day tops on this blog and Kev probably be working for MSG by now. There are a lot of interesting parts to this blog and the debating between which team is better is just ANOTHER.

    River Indian,

I agree with both your comments. Though your Degree comments were tongue and cheeck, who knows how far Ossining goes with one of the best lineman in the section healthy? But he got hurt at the beginnng of the season. There was no ground work of his team knocking off the best teams around while he PLAYED. So it is a little different. I would say don’t you think, but I am sure you will try and spin that comment. The only reason I brought Bronner up was people continue to use Eastchester’s loss to Roosevelt as a barometer to support some crazy argument that Roosevelt is better than Rye.

    MDale,

Eastchester lost to Harrison in a TORRENTIAL DOWN POUR. Speed teams do not do well in the mud, but I KNOW you KNOW that being a Roosevelt fan and all.

Damn Huskies, THEY’RE MUDDERS, their father was a mudder, their mother was a mudder, they love the slop!

  87. INFO:

    IONAPOWER:
good win for the gaels! what does the seeding look like for the play-offs?

  88. WingTGuy

    Just a Fact,

Did you get to the Harrison/Eastchester game? It was raining in the first half as well. Not as hard, but Eastchester was not hampered by it in the first half.

I don’t think Eastchester is a speed team. They were built around great line play and one speed back. They were simply outplayed in the second half. My thought at the game was that Eastchester (and almost everyone watching) thought they had the game in hand at half time. The misplayed snap, a great Harrison reception and the game simply turned. If Eastchester scores on their first possession of the second half, game over. Bring in the second teams. Eastchester dominated the first half.

Then we could be saying that Eastchester is the best team in A.

My opinion is that Class A did not have a dominant team this year, they had 5 or 6 that could have won the section. Injuries, off games (or halves), great plays were all factors in getting Roosevelt and Poughkeepsie to Mahopac.

Several people had Poughkeepsie as their sleeper this year and Kevin said in one of his blogs to not be suprised if Roosevelt made it to the section finals.

It has been a great year in A and I am looking forward to seeing the finals on Saturday. Is it at 2 or 5?

  89. Just a fact

    Wing T,

according to the summer combine, Bronner ran a 4.5, 40. You can’t show off that speed in torrential down pour. I was at the game and there was drizzle the first half. The second half it came down and that is when Harrison made their come back. Like I said the Huskies are mudders!

  90. MDALE

Just a Fact- I can understand that. Also if you remember though when we played Eastchester Roosevelt’s terrible field was muddy that day because of the rain the 2 days before. That field is awful!!!

Jim – I cant believe you would think that some Rye people wouldn’t say “congrats to Roosevelt but you wouldn’t have won it if we were there!” That is hard to believe. That is also why I wanted you guys to win so I wouldn’t have to hear that.

“I believe his last words of wisdom were in regard to the incident when his team smashed $600 worth of windows in the locker room at Rye whwn things weren’t going their way. MDALE called Rye “racist” for turning Roosevelt in…said “they never would have done that to Scarsdale” then added that Rye was just jealous of Mike Meade, who had been chosen by the Jets as coach of the week.” ——I NEVER SAID ANY OF THAT ON ANY POST IN THE PAST. PLEASE FIND WHERE ANY OF THAT WAS SAID BY ME!!! CLEARLY YOU JUST WANTED TO BRING UP SOME OLD ISSUES THAT WERE HANDLED BECAUSE MAYBE YOU ARE MAD AT IT….WERE YOU THE JANITOR WHO HAD TO CLEAN UP THE MESS???

  91. fanoftheman

WingTGuy…eastchester had some quickness but i think they were more of multi-dimensional team that was underutilized. they had some horses that could run but they also had a qb that could throw. the game plan never changed from the past years when they had to run. they always came out strong and then went into a prevent offense. run…run…run…until you have to throw. they could have had a much more balanced attack which may have changed the outcome of some of the games. with that being said the team has stepped up and played very well down the stretch considering all of the injuries.

  92. ScottinRye

    MDALE:

Explain to me why a coach with a small roster, and most players going two ways would continue to play an up-tempo, no huddle offense?

Roosevelt will be buried at halftime unless he wakes up and tries to slow the game down.

Just for laughs, when was the last regional title won by either Roosevelt of POK at any level (AA,A,B,C) since this format was adopted by Section one?

  93. Jim

    MDALE

If you didn’t say any of it I take it back. It was said, and I thought it was said by you, but if I am wrong I am sorry. I honestly thought that you said this before you disappeared for a few weeks after that game. Good luck this week.

  94. blankman

Roosevelt scored 41 on Ossining, Rye scored 21. Roosevelt scored 22 on Eastchester, Rye scored 7. Roosevelt scored 34 on Harrison, Rye scored 21. Any Rye fan who criticizes Roose is uneducated or has only seen them play once. Coming from someone who has seen all of their games and taking all the facts into consideration, I’d say the Rye game was an aberration. Roose has been the best team in Class A all year and they will continue to show that this Saturday. Go back to playing the sisters of the poor Rye. Enough with the big boys. Scott in Rye, Roosevelt played at an aggressive tempo only 1 game this year, Rye. So how many Roose games have you seen to be so educated??? Haha. Enjoy the show guys.

  95. Riverindian

    just a fact,

I agree that Rye is the best team in A. No question in my mind but it didn’t work out for them. It happens in sports all the time look at the 1980 olympic USSR team as an example.

Again not to make excuses I’d love to see where Ossining would have gone with Degree in the lineup. Maybe we’ll get that chance next year.

  96. WingTGuy

    Scottinrye,

You really are bitter aren’t you. I am sure that MDALE can speak for himself, but why would the coach change strategies when they keep winning.

From the scores against Ossining and Lakeland it looks like they got stronger as the game went on. Winning both going away.

    Fanoftheman

Thanks for your insight into Eastchester. I saw them play twice this year against PK and Harrison. I wondered why they did not use their QB more. It was something that a number of Eastchester fans were excited about at the beginning of the year. I sat on the Eastchester side for both games and asked several fans and none of them had an answer.

I know what you mean about injuries. When we lost Nichols at half time of the Ossining game, I knew we were in trouble. He like Bronner was the emotional leader of the team and probably Nyack’s best player.

He will be missed next year.

  97. Riverindian

    Blankman,

The only stat that counts is RYE scored 40 something on Roosvelt.

  98. Jim

Bronner is fast, but I saw at least two faster runners than him this year in Class A…maybe more. Graham of Pok and Walker of Roosevelt must run 4.2’s if Bronner is a 4.5.

Eastchester lost to Harrison because they ran out of gas…not because of the rain. It is far harder to make a comeback in the rain than it is in good weather.

Rye lost to Eastchester because Eastchester was better than Rye that day. The boo boo boys forefit the prior week didn’t help Rye…maybe a bye in week 7 or 8 helps a banged up team, but not a team with a slew of new starters in week #2. Eastchester was fading in that game also….they have a very good team….they just need to get more kids involved…which brings us to Roosevelt….

They may have the most talent of anyone at the skill positions….they are great there. When they played Rye they got absolutely spanked like a bad little girl….after playing a 1st half that literally took your breath away. The reason that this happened wasn’t because Rye is so great…it’s because Rye is so deep. Scott was 100% right in his observation that Coach Meade picked the wrong team to go up-tempo against.

Getting back to Rye…they lost to Eastchester (a traditional rival in both B and C through the years) and Poughkeepsie ( a team that dropped DOWN from AA). They really didn’t lose to the traditional powerhouse A teams that everyone said they would not be able to compete with during their recent run. Rye is now 8-3 vs Nyack and 5-0-1 vs Ossining all-time. They are 3-0 vs Roosevelt and have winning lifetime records against Eastchester, Pearl River, Tappan Zee, Port Chester,Byram Hills, Greeley, Somers, Brewster,Panas, Fox Lane,Saunders, and Beacon….all the current A teams except Harrison (35-41-3)and Hen-Hud(1-1)..... and of course Poughkeepsie (0-1). I think they will do OK in the coming years in Class A.

I don’t know if Poughkeepsie will be back in AA next year or not, but they will be the team to beat in A next year if they are there. Lot’s of players coming back. Lot’s of speed coming back and a powerhouse JV team on the horizon. Harrison, Rye and others will all be very good, but maybe not good enough to compete with this talented bunch.

I never got a chance to see Somers, but you are only as good as you play…not when you are 2-5…but it’s tough to all of a sudden play against really good teams after coasting all year. The schedule maker did Somers an injustice, and once again the Tuskers find themselves on the outside looking in.

Finally, I totally agree with the “on any given week” theory. There are at least 4-5 teams that were good enough to win it this season, but only one will and they will be the best team in Class A. I’ll say it will be Poughkeepsie 27-19.

  99. blankman

Why would that be the only stat that counts? Lets eliminate everything that happened this year and focus on a singular bad performance. You’re right, that makes more sense. When Roose is in Syracuse, are you still going to harp on what happened on a night in Rye? Who cares about Rye anyway? I’m pretty sure they dont have a game this weekend.

  100. fanoftheman

WingTGuy…i can’t explain it either..i know that the qb is a big strong kid that is very smart to boot but the offensive coordinator calls the plays…i’m not asking for them to air it out with long passes…a screen or a pop pass would be nice! they have one more game against harrison and i think they need to mix it up in order to have a shot.

  101. Jeff P.

I’m not sure if you’re referring to football only, Scottinrye, but Poughkeepsie did win a boys’ basketball state championship in Class B back in ‘95. As far as I know, PK hasn’t won any regional titles in football (not sure about Roosevelt), but there’s a first time for everything, right? We’ll just have to wait and see what happens 5 p.m. Saturday…

  102. Eastchester Football

First of all thank you everyone for a great season in class A football. I am an obvious eastchester fan, and attended all their games this year. First off I would like to comment on the harrison game.

In the first half eastchester scored a td on an 80 yard run by Kevin Bronner. He ran a jet and beat about two or three guys down the sideline. Next posession Bronner ran a reverse for about seventy yards down the side, again out running a few husky players down the sideline. They did catch him at the 10. Then on eastchester’s thrid td, they powered harrison down the field.
Judging by the runs Bronner made, it clearly shows that estchester was more effective in the first half. I beleive they outgained harrison 257 yard to 30. There is no way you can convince me that it was becuase eastchester thought the game was over. It was the rain.

Secondly eastchester has the best defense in class A period.
They held the following schools to thier lowest totals of the season:

    Pok -12
    Rye -7
    Prince- 0
    Roosevelt – 22 (0 at the half)
    Greely -7
    The others:
Harrison -17 (7 on kickoff return)
    Spring Valley -14
    Saunders -6
That is a total of 85 points in 8 games for an average of 8 yards per game. Against teams with combined records of 40-22 ( with 8 of those losses by saunders, and six handed out by eastchester)

  103. fanoftheman

i wish i could go back to the blogs that were posted after eastchester played pok…the eastchester fans gave pok kudos for their play and sportsmanship…they deserve to be in the section 1 class a finals and in my opinion they will win this weekend. they are very atheletic and they are very well coached. i think the difference will be in the discipline of the teams. i see pok playing hard football and stopping roosevelt. roosevelt will get frustrated and will end up losing the game. pok 27-roos 8.

  104. fanoftheman

Eastchester Football…i am also an eastchester fan…i agree with you about their defense. they really did play great defense all year. the flip side of the coin is how many points did the offense score in the second half. i personally think it was more than the rain in harrison. i would like to know how many points the offense scored in the second half this season…even this weekend up 12-0 at halftime…end up winning 12-7.

  105. 914

how about this one: roosevelt and pok are the two best teams in sect. 1 a football – period.

  106. fanoftheman

914…can u expand on that? obviously a roosevelt fan…pok woops your butt! how about that one?

  107. MDALE

I love how people are saying that Roosevelt is only going to score 7 points or less….The lowest they ever have scored all year was 22. They have put up big time numbers all year. They have the 3 best offensive players in Section 1 and now they are only going to score 7 points!? Thats crazy to me…this game should be a good 1 but stop talking about Roosevelt like they are in over there heads. If POK is going to win they are going to have to put up some big numbers against a Roosevelt defense that is playing GREAT ever since the Rye game.

  108. IP

Iona gets their clocks cleaned by St. Joe’s again and mercifully puts this disappointing season to bed once and for all….hopefully….Lacrosse anyone?

I HEAR THE MIGHTY RYE TEAM IS GOING TO PLAY JJ EF FRIDAY AT HOME COULD THAT BE POSSIBLE ??? THE BIGS DOGS ARE ROLLING INTO RYE ????

This is what I know and it is hot off the press:
1.) Lakeland backed out of playing Rye this coming weekend.
2.) Fox Lane din’t want to play a game with Rye.
3.) An all-points email was sent to all Section One ADs by Rye looking to schedule a game this weekend.
4.) Lourdes unable to play/backed out of a game with JJEF.
    5.) JJEF Rye Friday 5:00PM.

Note to whoever is posting as John Nugent – famed Rye coach of the 1963 to 1981. Please stop using the name of an 88-year old retired gentlemen who lives in Arizona. It is very unbecoming. I know John Nugent and you sir are no John Nugent.

HSFB Guy: Back at the beginning of the season I suggested that Rye’s historical record against all teams now classified A and AA was about a 70% winning percentage and that would be a good proxy for Rye’s performance entering Class A. Many blog contributors suggested that history bore no relevance. Perhaps the same can be said regarding your Rye (B to A)/Edgemont (C to B) analogy. You see there is a huge traditional difference of program excellence between the Edgemont teams of the 1990s and the Rye program (1929 to present).

Poughkeepsie 34 – Roosevelt 20 in the Class A Final.

One final note from the Rye Poughkeepsie game:

I have never, ever in a HS football game seen such gentlemen in a violent game, maturity beyond their years, mutual respect of the opponent and a game the epitomizes the best of high school athletics. There were no losers on Friday at Nugent Stadium – everyone who witnessed the game was given a rare treat and those who played are to be commended.

I don’t see how anyone thinks Roosevelt will score only 8 points this week. They are an offensive machine. The thing I would be concerned about if I were an Indian fan is that Poughkeepsie has a very solid defense; one that can slow them down enough to pull away late. And they have enough speedy weapons of their own to make a thin Roosevelt team chase them all over the field and wear down. From a fan’s perspective, this should be as entertaining a game as you can ask for. I’m making a prediction, but I’m not real confident about it:

    Poughkeepsie 40
    Roosevelt 29

  115. Huskies Forever

Eastchester was worn down in the second half. The rain might of hampered their play slightly, but was not the number one reason for their loss. The rematch should be a good one.The only missing component will be Bronner, who really made an impact on both sides of the ball. How will Eastchester fair without their great running back, remains to be seen…..
