High School sports in the Lower Hudson Valley

Semifinal Saturday

October
31

What a day of football. Here’s a quick rundown of just some of the highlights:

New Rochelle beat White Plains 24-7 to earn its first fourth straight trip to the Section 1 Class AA final and seventh this decade. The Huguenots haven’t lost a championship game in that time.

North Rockland rallied in the final minutes to defeat Arlington 20-14. Again, North Rockland makes its seven appearance in the AA final this decade. The Red Raiders have won three, lost three (all to New Ro).

Roosevelt beat Lakeland 32-7 in a game that was a little closer than the score indicates. Lakeland had the ball inside the Roosevelt 30 twice in the third trailing 19-7 but couldn’t score either time. The Indians pulled away late to set up a Class A final showdown with Poughkeepsie. That game is pretty much the reason they invented field turf.

In Class B, Nanuet steamrolled Kennedy yardage-wise, although the score was only 21-7. Nanuet had three of turnovers after having only one all year or else it would have been a little different.

Sleepy Hollow pulled off a 28-19 upset at Pleasantville behind 300 yards rushing and three touchdowns by Bobby Small. Headless Horsemen coach Steve Borys dressed up as just that — the Headless Horsemen — for Halloween. Yes, that’s him to the right wearing a black cape. You’ll understand more in tomorrow’s Journal News.

In Class C, Croton-Harmon won yet another thriller, scoring in the final minuts to defeat Dobbs Ferry 25-20. Devonte Brailsford had a monster game for the Eagles, who allowed two touchdowns in the final five minutes to fall in the semifinals for the second year in a row.

Bronxville won the day’s other playoff game, beating Hastings 38-7. The Broncos are on a mission.

More news and info to come later.

  1. Objective...and long

Traveled to Croton-Harmon for the game today with Dobbs, and I’m glad I did. If you are not a Class C fan, just ignore this entry starting now. This is going to be a lengthy entry, but I’m sick of reading things by people who have no idea what they’re talking about. So let’s set the record straight.
Not sure why people are writing about “luck”. Dobbs was not “lucky” that Croton made 3 mistakes on punt attempts, just like Croton was not “lucky” when Dobbs made their special teams error on their punt attempt and snapped it over Brailsford’s head. This is not “luck,” it’s called high school football!
Croton went up 13-0 and looked like it would be a laugher: J.Tralli returned the opening kickoff for a TD, then QB Dorien scored soon after. Then Croton started to shoot itself in the foot by having 3 poor snaps on punt attempts: 2 of them ended up being blocked by Dobbs, and the 3rd punt actually went off the a Croton’s players face mask…which was hilarious! They looked like the bad news bears of special teams! Credit goes to Dobbs for taking advantage of those errors, and they took the lead 14-13 at the half as a result. This is not “luck.”
Dobbs scored in the 3rd, behind the rushing of Brailsford and Neimann. Brailsford is an absolutely beast. If I was the Dobbs coach, I’d hand it to him every play, and get the hell out of the way. If that kid doesn’t play at the next level, I’d be shocked. My goodness, that’s Class C’s version of Adrian Peterson. When he returned that punt for a TD, and it got called back, Croton wasn’t “lucky”. Again, it’s high school football where high school kids make stupid mistakes.
Soares, fullback for Croton, who’s been out with injury from what I was told, busted a nice run, then soon scored to make it 21-19. 2 point conversion no good. Drama ensued when Croton got ball back after the special teams bad snap/Brailsford not taking the safety/falling on it on the 2 yard line/whatever. Dorien’s pass was tipped on 3rd down and caught by J.Tralli tiptoeing in the back of the endzone. Croton’s kicker booted it out of the end zone for a touchback, and they had to stop Dobbs one more time before taking the victory formation. Croton “lucky” on the pass play? That’s like saying dobbs was “lucky” to score their 14 points in the 1st half when Croton couldn’t snap it from the center to the punter, and they had perfect field position. Great effort by these two Class C teams: You should’ve been there!

  2. prospect

Brailsford is Class C’s best player. Period, end of story. Dobbs continues to produce quality teams.

  3. SHHS Alum

    where’s the pic?

  4. Class C

Love the Bronxville-Hastings recap; guess the less said the better. 4 unanswered touchdowns in the 2nd quarter just about says it all; could have called it a TKO at the half.

  5. YO 914

Anyone Know what day the AA and A Championships are set for is it Saturday or Sunday?

  6. fan

AGAIN NOT IMPORTANT TO YOUR NEWSPAPER FOR THE WHOLE SEASON
BUT HARRISON WON AGAIN, I KNOW THERE IS THE POINT NO PLAYOFF’S
BUT IF HHS WINS NEXT WEEK WITH THE WEAK QB IT WILL BE 7-2. AND AGAIN I KNOW WE DID NOT MAKE THE PLAYOFF’S

  7. Goldberg

good for poughkeepsie and roosevelt in making the finals for Class A….....you can here crickets on this blog now…..no crybabies from the so called powerhouses on the site tonight….....you should be congratulating both teams who proved they were the best in the Section!!!

  8. Objective

Good summary, but the Soares TD came last. Pass to Tralli was before that.

You create your own luck in sports. Brailsford played a great game, but if he had been properly coached, he would have known to take the sack on the bad snap in the end zone, instead of running it out to the 3 and basically giving Croton 6 points instead of just 2 and the ball in their own territory.

  9. And

Dobbs will be terrible without Brailsford next year. I’ll predict 2-6. Dynasty over.

  10. hsfootballfan

    Sundays schedule?

  11. purple

class AA game is Sunday at 1pm.

  12. Bronxville Hastings

I was at the Bronxville game and saw the best team in class C dismantle a good football team. After a scoreless 1st quarter, the flood gates opened up. Bronxville ran it right down hastings gut. Inside, outside, left right – it didn’t matter. After intercepting a screen pass and scoring 2 minutes later, Hastings lost it. I was surprised how some of the Hastings player were yelling at each other, the coaches and refs. They lost thier heads in the 2nd quarter and never got it back. That’s what good teams do, take advantage quickly and never let up.

Bronxville line was oustanding. The RB’s are very talented and the QB looked like he was in all year. I was very impressed with both the skill players and “beef” upfront. And the coaches gameplanned perfectly on both sides of the ball.

And where was the great spread offense? Hastings could not run at all. The line play of Bronxville was great. The Hastings running backs are not as good as I thought. And they gave the QB very little time to set up. The only good thing for Hastings was the receiver #6, Flarity. He is one of the best receivers I have seen this year and was the only offense Hastings had. He had about 10 catches and I would have thrown to him 30 more times, since nothing else worked.

Should be a great game next week with the two best teams playing for the title.

  13. msg?

does anyone know if the poughkeepsie and rye game is going to be aired on msg? and if so when and what time?

  14. WOW

Croton-Dobbs was a good game but I did not see where the penalty was on the punt return. Cant believe a ref would take back such a great play. Croton was as good as advertised, but Dobbs was much better than people expected them to be. They were in it for all 48 minutes and could be going to Mahopac right now. Congrats to Croton, classy kids. Great game. Best of luck.

  15. Consolation Bowl

I don’t understand why Dobbs and Hastings aren’t playing a consolation Bowl Game this week. It’s one of the best small school rivalries in the Section, and both teams deserve one more game. I can’t imagine a better way to end the season. Apparently neither school has the desire to pony up the necessary funds needed. Kevin, or anyone, do you have any info about this?? The AD’s from both schools should rally their administrations and make this happen. Best of luck to Croton on coming from behind and beating Dobbs, and Bxville, who manhandled Hastings and is looking poised for a run to the Dome.

  16. Small school talent

Nice work by Croton-Harmon coaching staff: going back to Mahopac for the 2nd year in a row, and 3rd time in the last 4 years. Who whould’ve thunk it? Lil’ Croton-Harmon…small school football at its best.

Oh, and anyone have any info. on where Brailsford is going to college?

  17. O M G CLASS C

hell of a game and cant wait to go up to mahopac to watch a BATTLE. mvp of the game for dobbs….brailsford… and for croton the tralli’s both of them had outstanding games. startin with MATT tralli (not joe) who returned the opening kick. good stuff boys lets give it to BVILLE and keep your heads up dobbs classy and great team.

  18. croton fan

    To WOW,
you couldnt have put it any better dobbs was much better then expected and both teams played incredible games. Congrats to dobbs on a good season and lets go tigers!

  19. STEW

YES!!! The Dobbs/Croton game I heard was one to remember, like a repeat of last year when Joe Tralli, again makes the remarkable catches! Hat’s off to the Tralli Boys, and the rest of the Tiger Team!

  20. ...

someone please put the return on youtube

  21. HSFB Guy

Sounds like another thriller…for the longest time it seemed Dobbs wouldn’t have a game like that until the state playoffs or thanksgiving weekend…but last season and this season the amount of quality games has increased down in Class C…
