Albertus Magnus quarterback Ryan McLaughlin set the Section 1 record today for passing yards in a game, throwing for 409 yards and four touchdowns in the Falcons’ 41-34 win over Lincoln Hall in a non-playoff game.
McLaughlin completed only 16 of 23 passes, but threw three long scores in the first half; two to Mike Celenza and one to Corey Lopez. Celenza caught five passes for 200 yards and Lopez had six receptions for 156 yards and two touchdowns.
In the game, McLaughlin also passed Albertus Magnus grad Brian Duffy for the most passing yards in a season in Rockland County. McLaughlin now has 1,909.
More on this in tomorrow’s Journal News.

Kinda fun. Was sitting this afternoon in the Chinese Buffet across the street from AM. In walks the Lincoln Hall team dirty pants, sweat, tired faces, and all. What a nice impressive polite group of gentleman! One of the boys was injured but a coach held him over the shoulder helping up the step. They were not about to allow anyone to miss their post game meal together. As I’m leaving pretty much every young man said “hello sir”, “excuse me sir”, “thank you sir”. It just goes to show that the final score in HS football is in many ways just a fraction of the life skills our boys learn. They speak well of our society and the wonderful acts of our coaches in making our boys into gracious and polite young men.
I don’t know if any coaches from LH read this blog, but they are the kind of mentors this world needs.
Although l
Lincoln Hall is probably not a program known by most, I agree, The coaching staff must be commended. With all the hype of playing this school, in the end, on the football field the players are for the most part well coached. I cannot comment on why these young men are there, or what happens before or after games but I have the utmost respect for the players during games. In the past 3 years our school has had the task of playing them each year. Each game was decided on the last play of the game.. Congrats to all the United on a good season.
Coach Terrence Smith… Of Lincoln Hall: classiest Coach we’ve ever faced… A great coach and teacher: he instills the best in young men. As competetive as the game was, all his athletes did was help ours up off the mud, and tell our kids nice ‘play’ good hit good tackle etc. It was contagious. Our players gladly were doing the same… In the end the great game had was also the model for excellent sportsmanship, and just the way HS sports should be played.
I understand, that our kids broke bread in the same room @ the Buffet restaurant across the street from school with Lincoln Hall, and Coach welcomed our kids insisting to cover the Tab! What a guy!
It was honor to compete with THE UNITED and their Coach who gets what HS Football is all about. Congrats to Coach Smith his staff and their solid team of young men.
This is the best post I have read since I started reading this blog three years ago. I know nothing about Lincoln Hall. But based on this post I get the idea that their coach is in this for the right thing. Football and other youth sports are about memories and life lessons. It seems we have gotten away from that. This is encouraging.
And congrats to the kid who broke the passing records.
anAMCoach,
Well said.
I watched Lincoln Hall lose to Westlake last season and only wished that our coaches had the class and common sense that Coach Smith showed. I’ve wanted to acknowledge him since that game.
Coach Smith is a class act! This observation is a year old, but when I read the blog I had to write. Some coaches are more concerned with their records and not the kids.Keep it up coach as it’s not about the coaches and their egos but about teaching these young men.
You are doing a GREAT job.
Amcoach,
President’s cup game next week vs Kennedy?
Yes the Falcons face the tough Kennedy squad for the President’s Cup in their 2009 season finale…
Coach Smith is now my favorite coach in all of Section 1. If only all coaches were like that. With him at the helm, I will always from now on root for the United.
Lincoln Halls entire program is in a special class. The players and coaches all show how sports should be played. Sportsmanship to the utmost. Thanks LH
This definitely is a “feel good” blog today. Not only is their football team on the right track, as far as sportsmanship and politeness, so is their basketball team….several years ago I was manning the concessio stand at Rye HS when they came to play. Every single player paused to say “Hello”, as did the mini bus full of fans who had earned the privilege to come to this game. After the game we gave them each a hotdog and a bottle of water for the bus ride home, and you would have thought we had served them a 5 star meal! I was so impressed that I called the AD at Lincoln Hall the next day (a man who wears many hats, I’m told) and he was SO appreciative to get a complementary phone call. If anybody has the inclination to make his day, the number is 248-9450. This school is changing lives and should be commended.
Interesting post by “anotherryefan”, because if there is a program and a coach at the other end of the spectrum, it would be Rye and Dino Garr.
Ask any Section I football ref: Rye likes to intimidate from moment one, complete with stepping on hands in pileups, incredibile language, etc. Anybody wonder why the “Garnets” wear black?
When they lose a big game, it is always the ref’s fault. For a Championship coach, Dino has no class. Its about time this blog recognized SPORTSMANSHIP as well as accomplishment. Go Poughkeepsie!
Manny
Couldn’t agree more…that’s why my son went to – dare I say it? – Iona – to play football. I don’t doubt for a second that Dino has the best interst of his team at heart, we just totally disagree about tactics.
That’s such a bad reputation these types of correctional schools recieve. The same negative feedback by many outside of the loop consider Lincoln Hall and even Leake & Watts as these evil kids bent on destroying people and things. That is SO FAR from the truth…
Back when I was a sophomore on JV we played Leake & Watts Twice-since Class C Teams usually don’t field JV programs due to numbers. We played the the L&W tough both games and came away winners in both. They played us at home, and we traveled to their “home”. I don’t remember the exact school, but one of the many lower and secondary middle schools in yonkers held the field, markers, etc. I think it was an MLK school? anyway, both games the kids were well class acts, very sportsmanlike. The JV program ended up playing them a few more times after that season. My JV coach at the time said it best: “While many of the kids in the school are troubled, those that are on their best behavior get the privilege to play football..trust me, they wouldn’t want to (mess) things up and lose that chance so they know better and will give you respect.”
SAme with the United. They have played the same Class C program just on Varsity level and always gave you that type of last minute thriller. They also show the up most respect and professionalism…
and this is not just on the football field. The Track & Field program has great athletes that understand the definition of sportsmanship.
The thing with Magnus is they always have that type of playmaker…back in 2004 it was Lorenzen..then a few years ago it seemed the entire back field were legit 100M sprinters and could take the ball and burn the defense. Such talent and speed is clear reason to why AM won the Sectional Titles in Winter and Spring…
Just checked the website.http://www.lincolnhall.org
“Lincoln Hall provides specialized services for adolescents which reflect the belief that troubled youth have the potential to become responsible individuals with a sense of self worth and respect for others. Lincoln Hall, in partnership with families, forms a community that believes in the lasting effects of focused, caring treatment enabling the youth in our care to become successful members of society.”
Before today, I had no idea Lincoln Hall was a school for young boys who may have had trouble in the past. This just magniified my positive opinion. They are accomplishing their mission. What an admirable group!
GOOD JOB by this coach…apparently this coach gets it!!!

Hey LH Coach! I am the AM team photographer and I promise you this. Because of the kindness and class you and your team showed after the Albertus game, treating my son and his teammates to dinner, I want to attend some of your home games next 2010 season and shoot game photos. I’ll be contacting you sometime in the future so that we can establish lines of communication. Thanks again for your genorosity this past Sat.
