    Retraction,

While I picked Roosevelt…Ive thought on this and would not be surprised by a Lakeland win..poor field conditions, sloppy track.I’ll give you three names that will win this game and theyre not Walker, Thomas and Pritchet..Connor Prunty, Mike Fraioli and Chris Fazio will pull this out..the Hornets strong point is grind it out ball control..and a great secondary..Lakeland by 10..I screwed myself with my pick the other day, but was on the feel good bandwagon with Roosevelt and Coach Meade..reality its Lakeland and not as close as expected…I promise not to say I picked Roosevelt if they do win..I’ll live with it, but really feel like Lakeland gets it done as they play in their biggest game since 1983 behind Bill Prezioso, Jim Egan, Chris Boccia, a year in which they upset a New Ro team at home with Big Benji Jefferson, Jim McKean, and Pumpkin Rhett and won a bowl game before state playoffs..this is a watershed moment for Coach Capelli as hes been right there in getting the program back on track..today he takes them over the hump..damn I shouldve picked them the other day!!

    Someone Call The State Police,

Mahopac was just assaulted by RC Ketcham 25-7, a blowout from those who witnessed….if it was baseball we call that sweeping both ends of a home and home series…Ketcham 2-0 this year vs the little Indians from Putnam..looks like RCK in bowl game rematch vs JJCR….RCK doesnt even come close to losing that game…Im getting too full of myself with POK, now RCK and I think Arligton and JJEF in the not too distant future..Yankees tonight..life is good…GOD BLESS AMERICA and Dutchess County Football!!!!

    Congratulations North Rockland,

2 Near escapes vs AA North…now play Mahopac, Carmel and RCK as your other games in league, how bout I throw in JJCR for giggles because they are the doormat(LOL)...not hating..just being realsitc..North Rock is a nice team who’d compete for AA North over a season..I think these last 2 weeks validate what Im saying….who disagrees?

  35. O M G CLASS C

the croton vs. dobbs game was one of the best ive ever seen. non stop action and i hop bronxville is ready for a pumped up croton team final 25-21….UNREAL GAME GOOD JOB TIGERSSS
BIG UPS TO MATT TRALLI/JOE TRALLI.. two are phenominal

  36. Just a fact

To all you Dutchess fans. Good game today by the Admirals. They fell short. We look forward to meeting your best again. Thanks for the GREAT YEAR IN AA!!!!!!!!!!!

To all you guys who said Sulla was Overrated and not Super 11. On behalf of Sulla, Franco Cuts and the rest, all I have to say is….......

    hahahahahahhahaahhahahahahahahhahahhahaahahahahaha!!!!!!!!

The last two games the kid has done it on both sides of the ball. You earn Super 11 based on play before this season, so he never should have been in question in the first place. But some grown ups and maybe some kids decided they needed to call him out.

Today he taught the greatest lesson you can teach to your critics. Just go and do it on the field and your critics will go and hide. I will not even waste my time and copy paste people’s post. Not what the blog should be about.

I will say this again and again and will never tire, In no circumstances should you attack a HS kid on this blog.

To Sulla and the rest of the Red Raiders, great job!

  37. Just a fact

I will have pick results up around 11:00 tonight the latest.

  38. Big Fan

Right from the beginning, the road to the AA championship is through the two NR teams.

Looking for a great final at Mahopac.

    GO NEW RO!

  39. capt hook

  40. waltonn

Dobbs Senior’s gotta keep there heads up, they all played their hearts out, they good just fell a little bit short today. They are a great bunch of kids who always played with something to prove and with pride for the program, Congratulations boys and keep your heads up, I expect nothing but big things in the future from all of you and will miss watching you play

  41. MDALE

I BEEN SAYING ALL YEAR ROOSEVELT IS FOR REAL AND EVERYONE DOUBTED ME!!! SAID I WAS A MORON…NOW WE ARE 1 GAME AWAY FROM A SECTION 1 TITLE!!! GOOD JOB ROOSEVELT YOU DESERVE THIS!

  42. DutchessFBfan

    Just A FAct,

I vote for Sal Sulla for after the season, after youre hurt, youre a great player, Super 11..I dont think we disagree on that and Im not being facetious..Great job Raiders and even more so to Sal Sulla who couldve hung it up as most HS kids would given up after his arm injury..North Rockland doesnt win wihtout the physical and mental example this young man taught..also great job Arlington..two evenly matched teams!!!

  43. Squad

Rye country Day got beat by King 36-14. King’s backfield is a complete freakshow. Ive never seen anything it in Section 1, or anywhere. These kids are going to be playigng on sundays.

  44. Bronxville vs Hastings

    Bronxvile 38
    Hastings 7

Can Bronxville handle the spread offense? Umm, guess so because this one was over by the half. Any questions? Oh, they have to get ready for a “pumped up” Croton, I forgot. Hastings was pumped too with their much heralded “spread offense”-ask them what happened or better yet, watch the film.

  45. FBFAN

Check out the RCK VS. JJCR game this week at White Plains High School. Let me know what you think of qb Sal Cuccia he has been solid all season long. He has been shown no love. Today against Mahopac 180 yds. 4-td. One of the top pure passers Ive seen around in a long time.

  46. Class C

Dominating performance by Bronxville. They had their defensive starters out early in the third quarter and really made Hasting’s spread offense look like a joke.

  47. chris

Two weeks Kevin picked NRock to lose, two weeks proven wrong, again. The heart of the raiders; a tradition of excellence.

  48. The Nyack

same old story with the double AA North LOL

  49. The Nyack

AA has the more interesting final this year by far

  50. eagles

croton got lucky they dodged a bullet

  51. The Nyack

battle of the undefeated 2 of the only teams to win section chips this decade. Both traditions of excellence. Ill be at this game for sure!!!

  52. crusaders

congrats to coach o’d and the crusaders for finishing 8-0 and 2009 league champs!!! calib had a monster game and he is only a sophomore! good luck in the play-offs.

any word on iona & fordham prep games?

  53. Dobbs

Can anyone explain why Brailsford didn’t take the safety up by 8 points on the bad snap on the punt, instead of running it out and giving Croton the ball at the 3 yard line. That was the game right there.

  54. DutchessFBfan

    FBFan,

Cuccia is one of the top 5 QB’s in AA in my mind..best stats in AA North 9tds 1int…..over 900 yards in 8 games out of the wing t..saw him 3 times this year and he was 8-11, 9-10, 9-11, no picks and at least a TD in all ..sounds like today he was better..he toyed with Mahopac in game 1 and it sounds like they had an even better game plan and execution this time…RCK is not known as a passing team..hes worth seeing, but so are juniors Aaron Morgenstern and Earl Sneed, both 1AA to mid major recruits..RCK demolishes JJCR in the what coulvdve been bowl..RCK shouldve never lost the first time around and they own that in a tough league where there are no weekends off..beat Mahopac twice,Carmel once…they are in the top 5 in AA in my mind..no way they lose to the WP and Sufferns of the world?? Lets hope they close out the season with another win..I thought the season was over??

  55. SectionABC

oh man. bronxville has NEVER seen a team like hastings before

  56. lifootball

    Holy Trinity 46- Fordham 0
    IOna 28- Farrell 0
    Chaminade 14- Mount 13

  57. special teams

Sal Sulla carried the red raiders today,a classic h.s.football game.

  58. O M G CLASS C

aight bville fans we all know what happened last year… hopefully you guys dont get ur “section champs shirts” pre made like westlake did…

  59. FBFAN

    DutchessFBfan,

By the way Cuccia would have had 6 tds had sneed and morganstern hadn’t dropped td passes he would have been 12-12 in the game!

  60. Bronxville vs Hastings

Can’t get those shirts made since they are still trying to solve the problem of the “spread offense”. Should be a good final where both teams need to equally worry about the other. It was mildly annoying having to listen all week to what Bronxville was going to have to do to stop Hastings vaunted spread offense as if it was akin to defusing a bomb. Looks like Hastings had a few concerns of their own. Bronxville takes none of its opponents lightly, just ask the last 8 teams they played but I don’t think Croton should take them to lightly either because they have a few problems to address as well.

Great analysis and between the two they play 4 teams worth a damn…wow…Sect 1 has this all figured out??..you left out NY School For The Deaf and Poor Sisters Of The Charity crossovers that both played..give me a break..does anyone have an easier path to the Dome than these 2 in NYS????

  64. 10960

Let me also throw in another interesting Feat. that you guys may like…..

    Section champions class AA

    2000 New Rochelle
    2001 North Rockland
    2002 North Rockland
    2003 New Rochelle
    2004 New Rochelle
    2005 North Rockland
    2006 New Rochelle
    2007 New Rochelle
    2008 New Rochelle
2009 either New Rochell or North Rockland

That sums up the last 10 years LOL.

  65. hollow fan

what a great HS football game. p-ville played their hearts out, congrats on a great season. Everybody doubted sleepy hollow this game, Bobby small had 300 yards rushing w/ 3 TD’s, LJ garrant had 130 yards rushing and 1 TD.
Hey Cheif, ill see you in mahopac, oh thats right, O-town didnt make it.
    Happy Holloween to all

  66. Mountie Hoops

John Jay EF wins vs Suffern 42-6…suffern lost 1st,2nd,and 3rd string qb’s last week + 4 other key players to injuries…standout WR Catalodo stepped up and learned what he could in 5 practices and tried to will his team to a win-great effort by Nick but a depleted squad couldn’t match the depth of JJEF

  67. The Nyack

    10960,
Thats a damn shame how the last 10 years has only had section champions from 2 schools in double AA.

    DutchessFBfan,
you’re a hypocrite for thinking that NR and NR has an easy path to the state playoffs. Remember that this path rolls over your Dutchess County teams as well LOL.

You know the same county that consist of what you proclaim as the most competitive area in section 1 double AA football LOL.

    Yea competitive amongst themselves LOL

  68. Coach

    SLEEPY VS. NANUET

I think its fair to say that Sleepy gave NANUET THEIR BEST GAME AL YEAR.
this should be a good 1

  69. ...

Devonte Brailsfords punt return touchdown that got called back was the most amazing individual effort I have ever seen. Kid is a beast.

    Good luck croton

  70. wow

cant believe pvilles out just like that. thought for sure itd be them and nanuet at mahopac. nice job sleepy.

  71. 10960

I believe that you can only go so far running a conservative Power I like Casserella does with his North Rockland Red Raiders.

The good thing about his offensive philosophy is that there is a better chance of mistake free football and the offense is simple. Casserella has an offense that compliments his defense by keeping the opposing offense off the field no matter how explosive it is.

Not the kind of an offense that you want to play from behind with but rather an offense that you prefer to keep games close with. I think Casserella doesn’t mind the big play but hes satisfied with first down consistency because that keeps the clock rolling and the opposing offense off the field not to mention a very well rested defense to his benefit.

Casserella has a sectional Champion at best. His defense is not prepared for a passing game like Monroe-Wood bury. Even Clarkstown Souths Spread offense was effective enough to put up the most points on the North Rock defense this year.

The only way I see this team getting past section 9 (if they beat New Rochelle) is if Monroe-Woodbury loses to minisinck Valley tonight (not happening).

At the end of the day I’m happy with this final and very interested as well, your talking about two undefeated teams here who have solid defensive schemes and great traditions behind them.

  72. hornblower

Actually, Mount beat Chaminade 14-13. Mount doesn’t win many but they did win today.
Word is that they will play Stepinac next Sun. in the A playoffs.

  73. booboo

Go light some scented candles and take a nice bubble bath

  74. fan

Words can not describe Devonte Brailsford’s run. Can not believe the referee took that away from him. It was a complete single man effort and they took away the best play I have ever seen in my life.

  75. The Donald

    Chief,

I hope you were able to make it to the game today. The kids did a great job. The O line took this one personaly. They played hard. If I had a game ball the O line would get it. you don’t rush for over 400 yrds without the big boys up front. Boston Cream pie for everyone tonight.. Happy Halloween.

  76. Spectator

    Mount Vernon beat Carmel 32 – 14

    What was the scardsdale score

  80. BIG JOE

KEVIN, .. THE GAME OF NEXT WEEK SHOULD BE THE HARRISON VS. EASTCHESTER….I THINK THAT MORE PEOPLE ARE MORE INTERESTED IN THAT GAME THAN THE ROOSEVELT POUGHKEEPSIE GAME ..JUST REVIEW THE POSTS IN THIS BLOG AND POUGHKEEPSI IS MENTIONED ONCE WERE HARRISON AND EASTCHESTER ARE CONSTANTLY MENTIONED—ALSO WILL SOMEONE TELL ME WHERE THAT BOWL GAME WILL BE PLAYED….ALSO VIDEO THAT GAME AS THE GAME OF THE WEEK

  81. archer83

    JJCR 42-Scarsdale 33

  82. chsfl

since mount beat chaminade mount will most likely not play stepinac in the first round. The seedings will probably go
    1) Farrel
    2) Mount
    3) St Francis
    4) Kellenberg
    5) Stepinac
    6) Hayes
    7) Xavier
    8) St John the Baptist

Kellenberg and St Francis may be flipped but im not sure yet. So this could mean that if mount wins and Hayes wins, They will play for a second time in the turkey bowl this year.
Im very confident to say the final will be Stepinac vs Mount. Great old rivalry that hasnt been played in 4 years. Very excited to see this game if it the playoffs turn out the way I think they will.

  83. HSFB Guy

Stepinac is AA-A champs, meaning they are the top seed in AA, the A is for the bottom standers…

btw Dutchess you are aware the rest of your county is up in Section 9 right? Section I even states “lower dutchess, rockland, putnam, westchester.” So I wonder how good those northern teams really are, esp in Dutchess alone.

Surprised at Sleepy Hollow? I’m not
just look at the HOliday! Its Halloween..that town goes all out for Halloween..they’re town, the high school, the mascot is all based off of Irvings tale, so its wise to have Sleepy play important games on Halloween b/c they will rise up somehow and suceed.

oh yes congrats to the Crusaders for the amazing season and conference championship…missed a classic battle today…SJB held the Cru in check..but in the end Stepinac does what it does best…

    Gotta Love the playoffs
    oh yes Yankee Game tonite
    this is a good day

  84. crazy

    big joe

I understand ur a die hard husky fan but come on. You think the harrison eastchester game is more important then the poughkeepsie roosevelt championship? I think a lot more people would want to watch the championship game rather then a bowl consolation game that has no playoff implication. I would love to see the Harrison Eastchester rematch but I would much rather watch a championship game.

  85. section 1 football

hopefully that punt return by Devonte Brailsford that was called back will end up on youtube or at least on this blog so that people who werent there can witness it. it was absolutely unreal.

  86. chochy

    JJCR 42-Scarsdale 33

Oh my god now you no why these teams did not make the playoffs can anyone play defense anymore. CW

  87. 11

    Brailsford is an amazing player.

  88. Jeff P.

To be honest, statesman, there was a point in time last night when when I wasn’t sure that a Poughkeepsie vs. Roosevelt final would happen. Obviously, PK felt otherwise. This Pioneer team simply refuses to lay down and die…

Poughkeepsie now has a chance to win a Section 1 football championship before winning a Section 1 basketball title. Who would’ve thunk it? :)

  89. MDALE

    Big Joe-

You are an idiot! Nobody cares about a meaningless game between 2 teams that weren’t good enough to make the playoff’s! Since you care though I am sure they will show it on NBC for you buddy! hahaha what a joke!

  90. "C" Fan

Croton-Dobbs game was the best football game Ive ever seen, brailsford’s run was insane-amazing player, but croton battled back against a tough running team in brailsford and nieman, reason why they lost-too many mistakes on both sides and a lack of a passing game.
cant wait to see the C sectional championship, bound to be a classic, just like croton-dobbs the past 2 years

  91. Rileygirl

10960, the only chance section 1 has of beating Monroe is New Ro. Nroc loses by 21 minimum, probably more. I dont know where I stand with who would best rep 1 in class A . Roosevelt has a few great players , PK might not have the three GREAT players that Roosevelt has , howeva, they have some depth.

  92. Just a fact

I would love to give my analysis of what North Rock should do defensively against New Ro. However, I will always be a New Ro fan first. I really do like watching this year’s North Rock team though. Last two weeks have been some great efforts from HS school kids that epitomize what HS football is all about.

I will say this, even without seeing Arlington play, on offense they did almost everything I predicted on a previous blog. But nothing new. The Dematteo’s will always have a certain way about their teams on offense. A lot of shifting but in the end the same type of plays. Trap, sweep, counter, blast.

North Rock did not listen to my suggestion that you back the line backers up to 4.5 to 5 yards from the line of scrimmage. Three biggest plays for Arlington Offense, a bomb, where the defensive back was there, but stopped moving his feet and tried to jump to catch the ball. He had no shot. The other two big plays, two traps. Why did the traps work? The line backers were nowhere to be found. New Ro backs will do the same thing, if Coach Lynch does not make this adjustment.

  93. big joe is a dork

    big joe
just shut up. the easchester / harrison / rye games are done!!!! these mean nothing, season is over you dork!!! noone cares!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i am sure when the ncaa tourney is on you would rather watch the n.i.t.

  94. DutchessFBfan

    Fan,

I think its…then talk, not them talk..and Im not sure how talented RCK was relative to the rest of their league..honestly, 2 real good junior backs and the offensive tackle, what else did they really have that set them apart???..admittedly they choked against JJCR 35-34 and lost to Arlington in a close game and were beaten soundly by JJEF…not sure where the underachieving is..with respect to the rest of the league, no team finished under .500…as the idiots proclaim, meaningless games, do you think the coaches dont prepare or the kids dont come to play??What a moron..obviously Mount Vernon came to play Carmel or is it Carmel just wasnt interested in playing after losing last week??Come on?Stop being an apologist and making excuses and recognize the teams that keep competing and winning..dont you think JJEF couldve rolled over..and dont tell about QB injuries for Suffern they got their tails kicked 42-7..one of the top 5 players in the section, Kyle Taylor didnt play a down for the Patriots this year..can I use that as an excuse?Im done, all the experts are right, all hail North Rockland and New Ro…just remember Southern Dutchess is getting better by the day as witnessed by POK and Arlington and JJEF and RCK…fortunately the rest of AA only has to play powder puff football until the semis…LOL..Time to go watch the Yankees..and BooBoo..I am taking your advice…until tomorrow..Go Dutchess

  95. Just a fact

    10960,

I think if North Rock would try and emulate how Rye mixes up their offensive play calling, the I/power I would do quite well. Rye lines up in some power formations like double tight, but Rye seems to mix up their play calling very well. As I mentioned last week, North Rock sequence of play calls is what makes you scratch your head. However, I will say today, North Rock O-coordinator deserves a lot of credit. He did a nice job mixing up plays near the end of the first half and most of the second half. Most of the first two quarters, I was like here we go again with the head scratching, predictable calls. But man did he turn around. Great Job on his part.

    Riley,

I know what you’re saying with MW, but this North Rock team, if they play mistake free, they can surprise teams. They have some very big boys on the o-line and they just where down teams. Happened again today against an Arlington team that was fairly big up front. JJEF was just as big as North Rock. I do not think New Ro or MW can compete with the size, but the other two always seem to have great athletes. My point, the Red Raiders will not be an easy out from here on.

BTW, I know North Rock normally gets the home cooking with the officiating but Don Dematteo Sr. must have called in a favor. The head ref who spots the ball gave favorable spots to Arlington all game long. Anyone at the game who disagrees, is lying to themselves. I had a great view of the game and I could not believe my eyes. I wish the Journal News played that game so some of you could go back and look at the tapes. It was scary how bad it was!

  96. fan

even though harrison is playing for fun they are winning anyone notice that

  97. fan

dutchess..you are a complete idiot if you think there is half the intensity played in gmmes after teams are bounced from playoffs rck beating mahopac or clarkstown is a who cares game..if that what makes you excited have fun

  98. DutchessFBfan

    Who cares about RCK??

You dont think Suffern had an opportunity to make a statement against a 3-4 JJEF team as the 2 seed from Rockland…so why play the games then??.. your assinine argument supports the idea that the state playoffs have killed football in Sect 1 AA…because the season is decided by week 6 in AA which is little more than a modified schedule..actually I think modified teams play more..whats your point..RCK? Or North? or teams still competing? or none of the above? Not sure if you ever played the game but I cant ever remember putting on a helmet or lacing up the sneakers in basketball and saying let me half ass it today we’re playing in a meaningless game..maybe speak to some kids and see what they think..its the same argument as the developmental league..do you think the Valhalla kids half ass it because they cant get to states ..you are a total jackass if you think that and pretty removed from reality..Im assuming teams not eligble for states have underclassmen, who hope to get there next year..perhaps at least theyre trying you jerk??

  99. DutchessFBfan

    On a positive note,

I look forward to POK/Roosevelt..great stories for both schools, cant go wrong with whoever wins..I think POK can go further but Im biased..not sure who Rye plays but would love to see them vs Somers..would be the game most of us expected..Yankees still delayed…I wouldve liked to see Eck throw more last night..hes a real difference maker and underutilized as a passer it seems..New Ro, POK, Bville, Tuckahoe..who am I missing as our Sec 1 advancers?

  100. thetruth

Hey Kev how about more scores and less opinion huh?? How about updates of non playoff teams too?

  101. booboo

    Just a Fact

You are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT about the spots at the N.Rock/Arlington game. I don’t hear any of the usual crying from the usual bloggers about how the refs were intimidated by Cassarella,or how he invited them over for dinner or whatever other excuses they need to get through their day. It was a great game , Arlington played well but came up short, and No. Rock lives to fight another day.

    No. Rock!

  102. DutchessFBfan

    Just A Fact and BooBoo,

Can North Rockland win?Should be a great game, size vs. speed..JJEF had New Ro on the ropes with the same attack..it should be close..Good Luck..Just A fact…post those results..Yankees dont start for a bit…

  103. Just a fact

I need eastchester and harrison games, anyone know?

  104. eagles

want to know why brailsford didnt take the safety because hes 17 yrs old and he probably thought he could get the first down he is still a kid lets not forget that! why dont we stop looking at the negative and talk about what a great game these boys played today it wasnt meant to be so lets move on and tip our hats to croton we will be back next year because thats the type of program we have chris wagner did a great job this team has nothing to be ashamed of .

  105. Just a fact

    Dutchess,

North Rock definitely can win, but seriously they need to look at what I said above. Trap plays should not go 30 and 50 yards. Those plays Arlington had were directly related to the LB’s 2.5 to 3 yards off the ball. No one has LB’s that close to the line of scrimmage except North Rock. Not in pee wee, not in middle school, not in HS, not in college and not in the pro’s(probably no in CFL either, LOL).

They will need to mix up their play calling. Nothing wrong with I and power I formations. One thing to win, they will need to play mistake free football. Sulla is getting healthier each week. Their O-line is getting better as well. I think the X factor will be Williams running and the QB. I think it is vital for the QB to have some success passing early on to get his confidence going. Also, the QB will need to throw the ball AWAY in situations where he is going to be sacked and not just throw it up for grabs like Brett Favre likes to do some times. If Sulla and Williams can come up with huge games, and the QB throws for close to 100 yards without any turnovers. North Rock will have a huge chance.

But that is a lot of IF’s.

Wow, I really sucked in my picks, Theres no way to come back!!! Not enough games left… I’m done!!!

  111. 10960

I had to show a little sarcasm…. sorry i had to do it lol

  112. Just a fact

    10960,

Power House has finally started to show some football knwoledge and has left the insults at the door. But in doing so his picks have suffered. Go figure! Make sure you have 20 picks next week so I have a chance. Just kidding. If we have 10 games for week 9, who would play in week 10 and how many possible games do you think we will be able to choose from?

  113. Just a fact

I guess next week ( week 9)we are done?

  114. all i have to say

Hollow Fan: You will still see me at Mahopac. Good luck, ‘cause you are going to need it. Remember one thing before your pumpkinhead swells too much, IT IS JUST THE CLASS b PLAYOFFS.

THE DONALD:Sorry I missed it, but I will no doubt be at Mahopac next week. Congrats and good luck. Meet me at George’s tomorrow, I owe you a drink.(Top Shelf)
PS: What is it with Borys and Pleasantville? I heard today he was dressed like The Headless Horseman. 2 years ago he went there as the Groton’s Fisherman. LOL

BIG JOE: Calm down, turn up the O2 and take a few deep breaths. No one cares about the Harrison-Eastchester also ran bowl game. Best thing that could happen is they play it at Ossining so that you guys could at least get some good food at half time. BIG JOE, Just be patient, Harrison is on the upswing again.

Just a Fact and the rest of you: The Somers head coach, the ledgend, the Godfather of the wing-T etc etc etc is Tony DeMatteo Sr. Not Don. Don DeMatteo Sr. was Tony’s beloved brother and former Gorton coach who was taken from the kids of Yonkers way too young.
The Arlington coach is named after his Uncle not his dad.
    Got it now.

As for New Ro and No Ro always being in the Class AA or A final. A lot has to do with big numbers.
To quote Coach Cassarella, “Numbers are very important in high school football. Numbers breed discipline.”

    all i have to say
What the hell are you talking about….
Dirty play, your little boys from b-cliff got their butts kicked by everybody and you come here trying to talk trash, yea we had 450 yards rushing and held on every play huh? and how do you translate holding into dirty play. give me your e-mail and ill get you a copy of the game.

  118. DutchessFBfan

    Chief Wild Eagle,

Actually Arlington Head Coach is Dominick Dematteo, not Donald Dematteo, so I’ll assume he’s not named after his uncle.

    Great article on Poughkeepsie,

Im not adept at cutting and pasting links, but if you go to the POK Journal website theres a great article on the POK bus ride home from Rye..a clear picture of what HS sports should be about..also, I finally watched the closing moments of that Rye/POK game and dont really care about offsides no calls, pass interference, non punts or bad play calling..what struck me if you get a chance is watching some of the POK premier players consoling those same Rye stars as their teammates celebrated in the corner of the endzone..true sportsmanship and class and a credit to their parents, coaches and community..Great job to both sides..now go beat Roosevelt and win a section championship..its back to work time!

  120. BIG JOE

I APPRECIATE THE POSTS IN MY DEFENSE,...I WAS OFFENDED BEING CALLED NAMES LIKE ...IDIOT ETC… I HAPPEN TO FEEL A RIVALRY WITH EASTCHESTER , IS A GOOD THING ..NOT BAD..THE MORE RIVALRIES THAT ARE CREATED THE BETTER AND MORE INTERESTING SECTION 1 GETS….THANK YOU 111 AND CHIEF WILDEAGLEYOU ARE THE EPITOME OF A GOOD BLOGERS-I THINK THAT MY LOVE FOR GOOD FOOD (LIKE SAUSAGE WEDGES) CAUSED MY HEARTATTACK,

  121. The Donald

    Chief,

Theres a story in today’s journal news about the coach and the cape. I saw the kids come out of the locker room. Safe to say they were ready to go. Hell, I would dress up as Katrina Van Tassel if it would help the offense run for 400 yrds. Like Borys said. It’s Halloween in Sleepy Hollow, you have to dress up as the horseman.
Nanuet is a very strong, disaplined, well coached team. It is going to be a tough game. I know the coaches are working hard on game planing.

Oh boy,, George’s, every high school kids favorite watering hole in the 70”s. Your on. No need for top shelf. I will have one of George’s famous watered down draft beers. LOL

  122. DutchessFBfan

    Big Joe,

Are you suggesting that the people from Ossining are trying to kill you with sausage and peppers and pulled pork? Just kidding..its great to have you back..and since Ive had the same arguments the last few days, Im not one who beleives any games played are meaningless to the kids, only to the adults who come on this site..I think Eastchester/Harrison would be great and you have to admit, the lohud system would likely crash with all of the bloggers from both communities..glad to hear your doing better and hope you can get out to some championship games or at least a Harrison finale..if not keep at at it and we’re all glad to have you back!

  123. Just a fact

    Chiefy,

if you are going to come on here and try to criticize, atleast keep up with what people are saying. As a joke, people are calling Tony Dematteo Sr., THE DON. The head of the five families including the officiating. Do I need to explain any further. It was only humor in good taste.

But maybe the joke is in bad taste since he did have a brother Don that has since passed. I will stop calling him THE DON as a result.

    Try and keep up!

  124. starter

    all i have to say,
you’ve got nothing to say,I was at Irvington game, that’s all I have to say

  125. GoNewRo

I was disappointed when I read Jake Thomases article in today’s Journal News about the New Rochelle-White Plains game. He didn’t mention what I thought was the most interesting aspect of Jonny McGhee’s 4th quarter interception return which sealed the win for New Rochelle. McGhee did the exact same thing, only more yards in the first game between New Rochelle and White Plains back on October 9. I thought that should have been mentioned.
Anyway next weeks game between New Rochelle and North Rockland should be a great one.
    Go New Rochelle.

  126. South Leauge

    To MDALE:

Congratulations on Roosevelts successful season. They truly deserve credit. But don’t come onto the blog putting down other teams becuase they are in the Dematteo bowl. There are many people and i mean many people that would love to see a double header football game of Harrison-Eastchester and Ossining-Somers. You’ve had one successful year of football out of the last twelve, and it’s mainly because for some reason section one granted a 19 year old player another year of eligibility. (They rarely do that)
The reason why they don’t normally do that is because there are players allot younger playing. For example agaisnt Roosevelt eastchester’s fullback was only 15 years old. Put a 19 year old up against a 15 year old and guess whose going to win.
Again, i do congratulate you on your teams’s success, but do not put down other teams. It’s a shame that you will be in the section finals one year, and combine with other yonkers teams the next year.

  127. South Leauge

    One more thing,

Can section one come together and have some double header bowl games. The above mentioned matchups would be a great opportunity to raise some money for section one’s dinner, and have two great games on a neutral field. Maybe White Plains??

  128. Just a fact

    Dutchess,

I know you missed the game yesterday, so I just wanted to fill you in with why I posted what I did above about Sulla yesterday. Tied game in the 4th quarter, with 4:00 minutes remaining in the semi finals of AA, and all the o-line and Sulla does, create a big whole and run to the end zone. Here is the article from today in case you do not get the Rockland news up there in Canada, I mean Dutchess:

    From today’s lohud article:

In a Class AA?semifinal at North Rockland, Sal Sulla scored the winning touchdown on a 65-yard run with approximately four minutes left. The TD snapped a 14-14 tie. “I didn’t really plan on trying to break a long run. I just wanted to get us closer so we could kick a field goal,” Sulla said. “I saw the hole and I just took it all the way down the field.” Sulla scored two rushing touchdowns and Terrell Smith had one for the second-seeded Red Raiders, who will meet No. 1 New Rochelle at 1 p.m. on Nov. 8 for the championship at Mahopac High School. “Last year when we lost we felt disappointed,” said Sulla, whose team lost to Carmel in the Class AA?quarterfinals. “We didn’t play as well as we could have. This year we didn’t want to be in that position again.”

  129. GoNewRo

    New Rochelle vs North Rockland

This game should have many interesting match ups but the one I like most is the 2 super 11 picks. North Rockland RB Sal Sulla vs New Rochelle LB Louis DiRienzo Jr.

  130. Harrison

Harrison wins next week they will be 7-2..Eastchester will be 6-3….Rye will be 6-2…..

  131. DutchessFBfan

    Just A Fact,

Sullas come up big when it counts and has done so with an inury that wouldve sidelined most..youre right..not much news up these parts…honestly they dont even cover JJEF, RCK, Lourdes, rarely Arlington and just recently POK, if the ball isnt round and black and white, youre out of luck, too bad for the kids, Rich Tomaselli at HVSP is the saving grace for kids up here..I have been turned onto Hudson Valley Sports Report.com by Jeff P….its the only way to find out a thing about Southern Dutchess football..by the way..I read there that it was 42-0 JJEF at half vs Suffern..apparently the QB was inactive, but 42-0..youre right, JJEF is the best 4-4 team in the state, RCK really put it to Mahopac 25-7..passing 168 yds and 4td on something like 9-14, someone posted that yesterday after the game and I figured it was a typo, particularly given the weather..whatd you think of Carmel getting beaten so bad by MV? I was surprised by that..JJCR in a shootout vs Scarsdale..while we havent gotten over the hump of actually beating New Ro and North Rockland, both JJEF and Arlington accounted well for football up here and in all of the other crossovers, the only loss was by Carmel to MV…not bad..Im done picking against North Rockland..I will jump on the bandwagon as they beat both JJEF and Arlington..Good Luck

  132. young eastchester vs young harrison

We already know how young harrison is, but i think it should be noted how yound eastchester is. Eastchesters backfield now consists of Tommy Dicarlo (junior), Billy Cirilo (Junior) Giuseppe Deluca (Junior) Rob Carinci (sophmore who was on jv 3 weeks ago) and Mike Loros (junior). Everyone in the backfield is underclassmen and this should be a good game against a young harrison team.

  133. Just a fact

    Dutchess,

I can’t seem to find out if DiMarsico from Suffern played yesterday. If JJEF blew them out with DiMarsico, then GREAT win for JJEF. If DiMarsico did not play, then I would not put too much stock in to the win. Suffern was a one man team this year from what I saw and read.

I would love to see Arlington and JJEF go out it again.

For Mount Vernon, I have been tough on them all year but that is a nice win for their program. I am sure you probably could find out who did not play for Carmel. If Schilling did not play or was not at QB, that is like Suffern playing without DiMarsico. Not going to be the same team.

I guess it just goes to show everyone that STARS do matter for a team. Especially for those teams without great depth at the skill positions.

When you figure out RCK let me know. They seem to be up and down all year. Start of the season, I pick against them and they win. Then I hop on the band wagon and they start losing. I guess the level of the competition was that close in AA North.

That is why if the State Tourny is going to continue, I would not want to see the schedules change much. I think the easier schedule helps section AA teams when they get to the quarter finals in the Tourny. Monroe Woodbury usually has a soft schedule as well. Easier schedule SHOULD lead to a healthier team come Quarter final time. I would like to see the same schedule as this year, but the cross over game should be in week 1 or 2. And it should be guaranteed we will see North Rock vs. New Ro or a game of that type of magnitude for each. This should help get the teams battled tested and ready for the playoffs. The problem with the same schedules, the AA North will continue to be at an unfair DISADVANTAGE come playoff time. Their teams will likely be more beat up. I think two hard games before the playoffs seems to be the right number. You do not want to have too soft a schedule alla Somers. SOmers was not battled tested and it showed in the playoffs. I think New Ro and North Rock right now have the right mix to be successful for the State Tourny.

    Your thoughts?

  134. pac1982

    DutchessFBfan
Players from Mahopac & Carmel had something in common this week, both played with NO HEART! Mahopac’s reasons sick and tired of same mistakes made by same players.. still staying in game without getting their A55ES chewed out. These kids are done, favorites are in and never coming out. In Mahopac its who you know!

  135. Just a fact

    Go New Ro

next Saturday should add to the tradition of great battles between the two storied franchises in AA. It does not get much better than New Ro vs. North Rock for the title. Though I did not get to see New Ro play yet (games they had just were not interesting enough, except the JJEF game), I like New Ro in this one. I think North Rock would have to play mistake free to win this one and I just do not see North Rock playing mistake free for four quarters.

With that said, Sulla seems to get healthier each week, Williams is very good on both sides of the ball, and the o-line continues to improve.

The stars are aligning for an epic battle this coming Saturday in Mahopac.

Memo to powers that be, MOVE THESE GAMES TO WHITE PLAINS. Nothing is worse than trying to leave Mahopac after one of these games. The traffic is the WORST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  136. MDALE

    South League –

I was making fun of BIG JOE who thinks that football and life revolves around Eastchester and Harrison. There were also a lot of other’s who made fun of what he said. I think you came after me because you are bitter that you lost to Roosevelt! You want to talk about a young team, Roosevelt has 3 seniors that will leave the team next year. ( 3 that play minutes a least) They lose Dave Thomas, Donovan Walker, and Ron Vereen. The rest of their team is Juniors and Sophmore’s. Also they have 9 out of 11 kids who play both ways this year on a 25 man roster!!! Dave was hurt when he was a underclassmen and never played football for that whole year so that’s why they gave him an extra year. Are you saying that there is no player out there that never got left back. Even if a kid was left back in middle school that would still mean that they are 1 year older. I find it hard to believe that no other player in Section1 is a year older for any reason! Give me a break.

Interesting to see what Eastchester looks like in this great match up without their star running back.Where and when????

  138. DutchessFBfan

    Pac1982,

How the heck did RCK throw for 4tds and 180..theyre QB has been steady and averaged about 100 a game but 4tds??I was certain Mahopac in a second time around with the revenge factor from the last matchup had a touchdown advantage..from all accounts the game wasnt even close, I read on Hudson Valley Sports Report that the RCK full back also had a huge day?Did you see it in person? What happened?Im shocked by Carmel but dont know if Schilling played or not, no coverage anywhere? Thanks

    Just a fact,

Just to comment on your traffic issue at Mahopac HS. I don’t know where you are traveling from but if you are near I684 take that to exit 8 Hardscrabble Road to Croton Falls Road to 6N and this will put you on the other side of Baldwin Place Road where the traffic is really not bad at all.
If you are not near I684 then disregard all of the above.

    GoNewRo,

I am talking about trying to leave the field after a game. They got the one road out of town from the school. But please share if you have a short cut. Waiting for that light to get out to the main road can take up to an hour. KILLER!

I make a left and then a right at the light which I think is rt 6. I follow this because I need to get back to I684 and I84. I usually have no traffic.
    Hopefully this will help you.

  144. football gods

    DutchessFBfan and just a fact

All year you guys say New ro plays no one yet white plains only lost was to New ro and north Rockland and Mount Vernon’s only lost was to New ro and White Plains and when either team has played outside of the south they have won except NOrth Rockland. My point is that’s like saying Monroe woodbury plays nobody cause they beat Minisik Valley and Newburg free academy most every year. Lets just accept it for what it is New Ro has a good thing going and no matter how much talent other people have right now they have the touch. IT seems to me though that the AA south is very well represented. remember Roosevelt couldn’t even make the play offs in the league yet there in the section championship in a its about numbers in AA if you got them then you have an advantage.

  145. Power House

    10960, Just a Fact,

Dont Worry!!!! Im coming for you guys. In the end Ill be on top of the Pick results…..Wait and seeeeeeee

  146. Football 101

This time of year weather plays so much of a role in the way games are played. A strong defense and a good running game is key to winning if bad weather occurs. Lets just hope its not a raining cold day which becomes too much of a factor and makes turnovers decide who wins. I like New Ro and North Rockland. They are one of the two best public school all around sports programs in the state.

  147. Power House

    Just A Fact,

I already know your talking about Mahopac. That long A$$ road that leads to that one light at the end of the road. Your best bet is to turn on your GPS and make a left turn out of the premises and hope it leads you somewhere good LOL.

HEY MDALE, IS IT TRUE WHAT HUSKY 92 TOLD ME …THAT MANY ROOSEVELT PLAYERS HAVE BEEN LEFT BACK SO MANY TIMES THAT THE AVERAGE AGE ON THE TEAM IS 21….SOME ARE MARRIED WITH KIDS….PLEASE EXPLAIN…IS THIS TRUE?????

  150. NOO

    pac1982,

What are you talking about. Mahopac did play with little heart but who on the team knows someone and that is the reason they play.
    PLEASE let me know!!

  151. Mountie Hoops

Just a Fact Dimarsico was out with a shoulder injury(didn’t even dress)...Fredericks(other qb) was out with knee…3rd string was out..so all week we had our top WR(and great athlete) run the offense and took the snaps..we were also down 2 rb’s and 2 lb’s and missed dimarsico on defense also

  152. DutchessFBfan

    Football Gods,

Roosevelt also couldnt win a crossover game outside of AA South the previous 2 years before this year…WP crossed in Rockland County which is not very good overall, Sufferns was losing 42-0 at halftime to JJEF…nobody said NewRo isnt the real deal..they just dont play a schedule like AA North is all Ive said, and I do beleive that with a brutal schedule like North their is attrition through injury, the teams are across the board bigger than the other 2 leagues, the coaching is much better top to bottom, thats all..JJEF is 4-4…what does that tell you?WP is good not great, MV beat a 4-4 Carmel team who lost to Mahopac and RCK? AA South the bottom 3 teams are 4-20..AA North bottom 3 teams 12-12 and undefeated outside of North..AA West bottom 3 teams..5-19 overall..that was my only point AA North is 28-20 overall with 2 losses coming in rematches between Carmel vs Arlington and Mahopac losing again to RCK so even thats misleading…I never suggested that any AA North team was consistently ready to challenge the other 2 NR’s for supremacy..but they do compete better than anyone else if you look at the scores and the actual games themselves..do you agree??

  153. DutchessFBfan

    NOO,

Can you explain your post in english..I have no idea what youre asking Pac1982..maybe someone else can translate…help!!!

  154. Power House

    DutchesFBfan,

Your fighting hard to make a case for the Double AA North!!! WOW!!!

  155. Just a fact

    Power House,

you have a long road to catch up, you need to be perfect this week. I do as well.

you on the mark with that road in Mahopac. GPS is for the rich, lol!

I am cheap, I have to bust out the map.

  156. Power House

    Just a fact

GPS you can get one for free on your phone these days. Anyway, who are you picking to win NR VS. NR??

Are you going with NR-West?? or NR-South??

  157. Spectator

I agree that AA south as a league is underrated each and every year, mainly because new ro is so good. Although no questions how good New Ro is the rest of the league is usually looked at as weak becuz of the fashion in which New Ro dominates every other team in it. It isnt until after the post season that people say, o the south was pretty good. That was the case in 06 when MV won the bowl against NR, in 07 when JJCR squeaked by MV in the playoffs, and this year. The North benefits from being relatively even every year. Whether their even good or even bad no1 can tell until the post season and crossover games r complete.

What is the point of my rant? The powers that b need to find a way to incorporate crossover games so we have a good barometer to measure teams with.

  158. DutchessFBfan

    Powerhouse,

Good point..bottom line we dont have anyone in the big dance and there arent any trophies for almost..but figured Id try the strength of schedule angle as a detriment to our chances of sending someone???

  159. Power House

Its all about culture. If the North teams establish a great football culture, football programs will get stronger as a result.

  160. Power House

If Arlingtons coach DeMatteo lives up to the DeMatteo Name, Look for Arlington to be a lasting Power in Double AA.

Thats the Advantage that the NR teams have…. Great Coaching.

  161. Just a fact

    Football Gods,

New Ro is my team. I have a great deal of respect for North Rock and Casarella, so I do root for them as well (but not over New Ro). I am debating whether to go to the game at this point.

I TRY to be somewhat objective when talking New Ro and North Rock. Both teams have easier schedules than any team in AA North. I have stated many times that Monroe Woodbury has an easy schedule as well, though my knowledge of Section 9 is limited to what I read on this blog, so that is not a lot.

I do not think any of us lower Westchester/Rockland fans can argue with Dutchess. Though numbers do not always tell the full story, the STATS weigh heavily in support what Dutchess is saying. Overall AA North is the better division. The only problem they play for third place in AA. Just kidding Dutchess, had to throw it in there, AGAIN!

Mount Vernon had a good win this weekend. My assumption is that Schilling, for Carmel, did not play QB. I do not think Mount Vernon can beat Carmel with Schilling at QB, but maybe he did play and I am wrong.

I do disagree with some of Dutchess comments. He seems to think White Plains and Suffern cannot play with the middle of the road teams in AA North. White Plains would definitely lose to JJEF and Arlington. They can play and possibly beat the rest. In regards to Suffern, with a healthy DiMarsico it would be more of the same. They could play with any middle of the pack AA North team. This week they got blown out by JJEF, but they played the game without DiMarsico, so that loss, I would not put too much stock in. Suffern had no one close at RB to fill in for DiMarsico. Don’t believe me, look at Suffern’s record for the past, oh I do not know, when was the last time Suffern had a good football team(great trivia question)? The fact they made the playoffs this year tells you what type of impact player DiMarsico was for that team. I am the first to agree one player does not make a team, but this year’s Suffern team might be the exception to the rule.

We are in agreement with the numbers. Three of the four(Arlington and JJEF are tied, with North Rock and New Ro) best teams in AA also have the biggest enrollments.

  162. DutchessFBfan

    Powerhouse….thats true,

Right now Arlington, JJEF and RCK are 3 of the best soccer programs in the state.Arlington was ranked by ESPN as the #32 team in the country preseason..also if you ever went to JJEF, RCK or POK, the facilities are amongst the worst in the section and likely state..I can only think of the Yonkers schools, Memorial Field in Mt Vernon that are worse..when you play Arlington or Mahopac or JJCR or Carmel and there are a few thousand people at every home game, beautiful field/stadium, top notch weight facilities like at Arlington and Mahopac..its easy to establish culture..the kids just need to see some success like has happened at Arlington recently..who wouldnt want to play in that environment??

  163. Just a fact
    • CAN’T argue with Dutchess (shoot I even did spell check that time)
  164. Just a fact

    Power House

Some very good points above. Both NR’s have LEGENDS for coaches.

I would add for a successful HS program you need to have good Youth programs as well. But in the case of Arlington, if they do not currently have good Youth football programs, you could possibly build from top to bottom, meaning if your HS team is doing good, more kids will get interested in coming out for the Youth Football.

  165. Just a fact

Where the heck is Garnet 10580?????????

The guy was in the running to win the picks, now he disappears? What, the wife threw away the computer(my wife might do the same with the amount of time I spend on here)?

  166. DutchessFBfan

    Just A Fact,

Arlington has in an incredible youth program thats been in place for years, Mid Hudson..if fact former Coach Biasotti, now a coordinator at POK was instrumental in bridging the gap between the HS and youth programs..Id go as far to say he laid some of the groundwork that is reaping rewards now…he ran camps, clinics etc for the kids and their coaches..it just never came together for them, he had a few good years and then a string of bad ones over about 3 years…now theyve had success and remember Arlington was dominant in the late 80’s through 90’s under Coach Dillon and then it started to decline for some reason and the better athletes were all playing soccer and there were football players walking the halls who werent playing..again it just was a down cycle I guess?

  167. Just a fact

    Dutchess, thanks for the info.

  168. oldnintheway

    Football Gods:

I think this year’s Roosevelt team could have made some noise in AA. Their offensive weapons can give any team fits. Rye was up by 10 on them at half, but even then their fans were still in awe of what they could do offensively. I get the feeling, however, that if they really want to make their mark, this is it for some time. Losing your two dominant players on a thin team is not a recipe for future success, and Harrison and Rye in A South should be very strong next year. You are absolutely right about numbers. It’s as if the primary need the Indians have is to get a lot more players to come out for the team next year.

  169. ON mdale's SIDE!

Hey make fun of Roosevelt all you want about “being 20 years old and having kids!” but I would take those kids over any of your Harrison and Eastchester kids!!! Those kids deal with a lot taking the bus to school and dealing with a lot at home rather than your kids taking mommy’s BMW to school and told how special they are. Then a bunch of Black kids beat you and the racist remarks start about being older and having kids. Roosevelt will win it this year and be back to defend their title next year!!! BUNCH of HATERS!

    just a fact

for your info schilling did play as he did in 07 when they got spanked by 30 and arlington will get theirs as well this thursday and that will end the debate. for remember arlington is your golden child this year so make sure you go by there practice and amp them up so as not say they weren’t ready or the big let down after losing last week as the weak excuse. mt. vernon will be there 23 strong to put foot in them

  171. football gods

    dutchessFBfan

I’ll agree there is a lot of parity in the north but parity doesn’t equate to good. There is a lot of parity in big east football does that make it better than SEC football I doubt it. with that being said compare the top three teams in each division and see how they compare and I’m quite sure the top three teams in the south always dominate outside their league and the rest are also ran look at the section championship game see if there has been a representative besides carmel there besides NR(north rockland, new rochelle), white plains, MV and jjcr and last year carmel was a beneficiary of good seeded and that’s why when they got there they got drug. with that being said lets see the north do something when it counts then we can declare they have arrived

  172. DutchessFBfan

    Football Gods,

Spanked maybe…but not by 30…final 28-6 in 07’..and Schilling was 15 yrs old..congratulations…hes been playing with a rotator cuff injury for 4 weeks now..thats why youve seen him at receiver at times and why they ran the ball almost exclusively vs Arlington in the playoff round..he barely threw vs JJEF in the season finale either…hes not even thrown for 1000 yards this season due to the injury yet still suits up and contributes on offense & defensively, with his legs and against JJEF on special teams..is MV the new king of the post season after being eliminated from the playoffs??...those difficult tune up tests against Gorton, Lincoln and Scarsdale are brutal…youd get more competition from Coach Darlos and the Razorbacks..lets see how it plays out on the field and then you can yap if they win…OK? Didnt Coach Wright say this is the year MV beats NewRo? And didnt you finish 3rd behind WP..that is the same Mt Vernon right??Just checking..WP hasnt exactly been a football juggernaut since the 80’s from what I can tell either?

  173. Just a fact

    Football Gods,

Schilling play QB? Just curious, since Dutchess said he did not play QB last couple of weeks due to injury.

Either way, I was trying to be nice to MV, now just to let you know Arlington will beat your team 28-7. Have a nice day watching your team get smoked!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS. You probably the same guy who thought MV was going to beat New Ro because the first game was close. lol!

  174. DutchessFBfan

    Football Gods,

Figured I’d do a little more digging since your argument seemed fairly transparent and very revisonist regarding MV and the strngth of AA South out of league..so heres what I found in the last 4 seasons:Heres who they crossed with and the result: 2008 RCK L, Mahopac L, Clarkstown North L, Clarkstown South L

    2007- JJCR L, Yorktown L Carmel W
    2006- Greeley L, JJ- W, NR- W
    2005- POK L, MW L, Arlington W

In the last 4 years the second best team in AA South is 3-9 outside of AA South, in the last 2 years 1-6…5 of those losses were to teams in AA North at the time..if we’re going to be factual..Id love the debate but if we’re gonna throw stuff against the wall, youre wasting everyones time…any thoughts??

  177. DutchessFBfan

    Football Gods,

That other football machine you reference WP over the last 4 years in non AA South games is a staggering 2-12..and you know the drill they always lose to Stepinac, throw in a few Mahopacs, JJCR and then a wide array of others..in the last 4 years prior to this season they are

    2008- 1-2
    2007- 1-4
    2006- 0-3
    2005- 0-3

Sure you dont want to turn this to a basketball discussion?..I suspect youd fare much better…right now your credibility is pretty bad…please help me understand how the next best teams after New Ro are 5-21 out of that putrid league known as AA South..and our new superheroes, Roosevelt were 1-3 out of league last year with losses to RCK, Arlington, CN and a win vs CS…and in the last 3 years 1-7?? No use going any further is there???That being said..the Roosevelt story is a great one and its good to see them have some success again! Its too bad either POK or them will have to go home next weekend!!

Mapohac is just fine for the games.
Of course now that you tools have told the entire world about the short cuts in and out and the best places to park they might as well move everything to WP. Thanx alot!!!!

  179. Just a fact

In Mt Vernon’s two good years of recent:

    2006 – 6-3

    2007 – 7-3

The teams they beat had a combined winning % of .352 and .361, respectively.

    In 2008:

    2008 – 2-7

Teams they beat had winning % of .118.

But hey, maybe I am being too critical of them.

    Chief Wild Eagle,

Hypothetically..if the district allowed one to dress up as a Riverhawk or whatever it was, what would that look like..rumor has it that it was a flower…no bird known as a Riverhawk…is that true? I follow largely AA North and we have 3 teams with the Indians mascot in 1 league of 6 teams..JJCR, Mahopac and RCK…go figure..One of our Dutchess teams POK is in the A final as you know in a classic matchup between the Pioneers and the Roosevelt Indians..Is that politically correct?? Hope nobody figures it out from the PC police before kickoff?

  183. PS

Mdale, what do you think, Yonkers kids are the only ones with problems at home and has school buses for transportation. Dumbass. Nice try to use the race card!!

  184. section1

yes Carmel lost to MV in 2007 and 2009 in games that meant nothing. Not to take anything away from MV but Carmel both those years gave up after they lost in the playoffs. In 2007 Kiechle, Carmel’s best player who had 12 interceptions that year and 650 yards recieving didn’t even play against Mount Vernon the first three when Mount Vernon scored all of their points. Carmel that year just gave up after North Rockland playoff loss. Hlaf the kids that year didn’t even show up to practice during the week of the MV game bc they didn’t care about it. This year Shilling played hurt vs Mount Vernon but the players from Carmel didn’t even want to play after their playoff lost to Arlington. That’s why the games were lopsided. It would of been much closer games if they played in the regular season but both those years Carmel I believe would of won if the game meant something. AA North is the best league in section 1. Rye’s division I believe is #2. AA north is a notch ahead of that league hands down from what I saw this year.

  185. MDALE

HAHAHA…I have never played the race card and no I did not write that POST! Dont come after me with those comments. I have been rooting for Roosevelt all year and heard all the crap that people have said thus far so why would I start saying stuff now. Especially now that we are in the Championship!!! I am not getting into that race stuff…but hey Husky 92 if you are picking me up in a Maybach maybe I will go to the Harrison game. Good luck with your meaningless game!!!

  186. R.U.PPL.SERIOUS

I mean are you people serious!? I come on this site once or twice a week to read about the games and to see what Kevin has to say about the week and instead I get morons like scottinrye and husky92 making stupid comments about KIDS! Do you people have nothing better to do then pick on kids? Were you guys like bad at football as kids and think you know the game better than everyone else because ur from your stupid towns in harrison and rye. Your seasons are over! Shut UP! Get over it! Worry about the 10 teams in Section 1 that are still playing for something meaningful.

P.S. It sure does take a real man to sit hidden behind a computer and talk crap about Juniors and Seniors in High School. Now you kno why ur kids r that way! Crybabies

  189. Spectator

    Just a fact & Dutchess

I dont think he meant the top 3 teams this year, i think he meant the top 3 teams in the respective years. In 05 MV wouldnt b counted among them because they were 1 – 5 b4 their last 2 crossover games. In ‘06 Gorton would be counted in the top 3. I’m not sure who was top 3 in 07 and 08, but i’d guess either Roosevelt or Gorton. But i think we’re missing the point here. The point is during the season the north ALWAYS will get more respect than their south and central counterparts. This is because the league is always even. The central and the South always appear weak because of the dominance of the two top teams. However those 2 teams happen to represent a decade of sectional titles so they r not always the best reference. So we never actually know how strong the leagues are. As far as the bottom teams in the south go, for many years it was saunders, lincoln and roosevelt. Those r 3 teams that barely made the AA enrollment requirement. Also I’d like to point out that the Yonkers and MV school districts all had recent budget problems that made playing sports difficult and uncertain.

A lil perspective to the stats. lol.

  190. Just a fact

    Spectator,

Though I think fighting the stats in this case is futile, I think you were the one who made the point earlier that I agreed with. Let’s get these cross over games early in the year, and I do not mean MV vs. one of the Clarkstown teams. I want MV, White Plains, Ramapo play all the North teams, and who ever wins, let the bragging begin. I will not say Suffern, since they need to do it for a couple of years before they get that kind of respect. Though WP has been bad for a couple of years, they have a history of very good teams. I still do not know when the last good Suffern football team was. Clarkstown South was almost ready to be a part of this discussion a couple of years ago, but now I am wondering if and when the ax will coem down on the head coach.

Notice I did not say New Ro or North Rock. I want that game 2 on each other’s schedule EVERY YEAR!

BTW, if you run the enrollment excuse( which I agree with) for the losses of AA South, then you need to include others with low enrollments in AA; Scarsdale, Mamaroneck, Clarkstwon North and South(combined their enrollment is about the size of a New Ro), and I am sure there are others I am leaving out.

I am going back to Kev’s blog about the enrollment and putting it in my favorites list first thing in the morning. Enrollment always a hot topic.

  191. Spectator

If u did the stats on the teams they lost to it would look just as staggering and even out the other #’s

  192. Spectator

    just the facts

i do agree i should’ve mentioned those teams and i think scarsdale was in the south div in 07 and 08. but yes, the crossover games r the only barometer. so hopefully section 1 can expand their season to include these.

  193. Just a fact

    Spectator,

The winning %’s of the teams that beat MV I am sure would be a lot higher than in the .300’s. What all these %’s will tell us, in MV’s good years (2006 & 2007), MV beat mostly bad teams, a couple of good teams and lost to either good or great teams.

Which most of us already knew, without the schedules or stats.

  194. Spectator

    Just a Fact

I know, i was jus tryna show that the stats there dont argue either way.

  195. DutchessFBfan

    Just A Fact,

Actually New Rochelle is bigger than CN and CS combined…
    New Ro -2588 enrollment

    CS- 1150
    CN-1139

Where the argument doesnt hold weight is in the case of JJCR, Carmel and Mahopac

JJCR 964 (class bumped to 1100 + because North Salem HS has no football and kids are allowed to play at JJCR) I think 2 kids on the roster from an article I read in preseason on LoHud

    Carmel- 1155
    Mahopac-1296

Those 3 have consistently reached the post season for as long as Ive followed football up here and JJCR and Carmel have made it to the championship a number of times over the last 7-8 years..I think 4 times between them. In terms of the Dutchess schools..obviously Arlington is king of the hill with 2646 kids…almost 900 per grade!!Followed by JJEF at 1642 and RCK at 1542..The crazy thing is that the big AA schools in some cases have more than 1000 more students or in the case of MV 500-800 more students than the middle tier AA enrollment schools of WP, JJEF, RCK and Mahopac..even merged, JJCR ranks last in enrollment and Carmel 10th with JJEF and RCK 6th and 7th respectively out of 17 teams…I think it goes back to what weve said..enrollment helps but is not the sole answer as evidenced by JJCR and Carmel..culture, coaching, community are as or more important it seems..look at Arlington this year vs the last decade??? Given todays emphasis on consolidation of services in government..imagine what would a merged Ramapo/SV(same school district) look like where they still would be smaller than Arlington, NEWRO, and North Rockkland….or a merged Mahopac and Carmel(same town) whod still be smaller than the top 2 or a merged CS/CN(unfortunately I think it still may look like what weve seen with more kids and a different mascot LOL)where the same would hold true…food for thought?

  196. football gods

Section 1 want did mean when carmel was 1 in the playoffs(2004) and got spanked as usual make excuses thats the true measure of a team on how they respond to adversity. In this short section one season you can tank it in after a loss or two or you will never be successful unless you are in New ro (you know where the water is better) in H.S. football you can’t expect to have a powerhouse every so much build your program around something. Lets not forget the Dematteo’s, Cassarella’s and so forth built their legacy on Bowl victories and because there is no way to crown a true number one just like in college football Bowl victories are a very important in keeping Section 1 viable. Ask Yorktown if they thnk that bowl victory in 2007 meant nothing. Because your coach can only get your guys to believe in program success is just as important as winning State titles what do I say.

  197. football gods

Just a fact yeah you can argue with stats but get your facts straight MV almost didn’t have a team last year so that effected last years of season work outs this year MV had 28 total 18 players and at one point had six starters injured yet still managed to be 5-3 I hope Arlington comes prepared and not with excuses for. The real deal is if other communities stop pilfering MV we would dominate like we do in Basketball If I were to count the amount of Razorbacks still residing in MV playing in other communities. The funny thing is when I was a kid out here that happen at Pop Warner level every community would come to MV pick you up treat you like royalty just so you play for their community so I guess like in everything it grows so now it happens at the H.S. level don’t worry soon we’ll be closing our ranks and you won’t be able to come to MV for athletes,

  198. DutchessFBfan

    Football Gods,

I agree with you..if its a forgone conclusion that a handful of teams are going to have a chance..whats the point? The prestige of bowl games has been killed by the section administrators, coaches who are fixated on advancing to states(although few do), and poor media coverage of games that arent as “so called important”There was a day when they were all important!!..2 games that come to mind were the great Lourdes/Sleepy Hollow game that was a shootout won by Lourdes 43-42 but where Harlod Gayden ran for over 400 yards and scored 6 td for Sleepy Hollow and lost and I saw Arlington play Scarsdale in 1988 at Memorial Stadium in a great matchup between 2 really great teams, its interesting because we had just come over from Section 9 which was’nt nearly as competitive or organized and didnt know what to expect..youd go there for the day which is a long hike from Dutchess County(just ask POK) and there was no distinguishing between a “loser” bowl game or whatever people called them..in those days youd go see a great Roosevelt/North Rockland matchup, Mahopac/North Rockland, Gorton/WP. In the same weekend you could watch the great Dobbs Ferry teams, Ossining teams, Harrison teams in great matchups where there was no distinguishing between the level of the bowl game(I actually started going even when there wasnt a Dutchess team there..only Arlington ever advanced)...all in that broken down Memorial Stadium in Mt Vernon..at the end of November right before or after Thanksgiving weekend back in the day..Sect 1 football has regressed if you ask me?The other thing is the larger classes always ssemed to play in primetime at least thats when I remember seeing Arlington against Scarsdale? It seems the large schools playing on a Sunday afternoon at 1 takes away from the atmosphere??

  199. football gods

    dutchessFBfan

Like spectator said I meant the top three south whoever they might have been. But like I said when all the marbles are on the table only certain teams are in the hunt. As for enrollment MV now has three H.S. so all the kids are not in one building so those numbers are inflated. Also I see you conveniently left off your fact stating repot the 2004 year when MV went to the section championship and avenged it lost to jjcr in the playoffs and mopped up carmel. In 07 the Yorktown game was clearly determined by the officials so short of the 08 year which almost wasn’t a year I think MV has faired very well out of league.

  200. DutchessFBfan

    Football Gods,

On the budget issues MV faced, I cant remember a budget passed for JJEF/RCK (Wappingers Central Schools) in ages, Im pretty sure that why the facilties are so poor, no fields and the ones they have go from poor to unplayable…and they have amongst the best girls and boys soccer prgrams in the state over that same period and during that period went from doormats in football to amongst the more competitve teams in AA in a short period 4-5 years..and also in our league you had Mahopac not fund sports at all(it was paid for by donations and a pay to play format) 3 years ago because of budget defeats and a year later they beat both New Rochelle and North Rockland…we can always find excuses why teams and programs arent successful..I still contend it goes back to the adults and creating a winning atmosphere?Obviously the top MV basketball talent could easily go play for St Raymonds , pretty close by whos always nationally ranked and turns out a large number of top D1 signees..you dont think people are trying to get a kid like Jabari Hinds to come play for them, particularly when those guys are playing AAU and at elite camps? They dont leave because theyd rather play at their own school, which the community comes out and supports in person and financially(look at their national travel schedule) and they have a great coach who goes above and beyond in Bob Cimmino…WOW isnt that what Ive said has made a difference at Arlington..dont think its by accident? Do you?

  201. DutchessFBfan

    Football Gods,

Wasnt trying to give a report but figured a few years supports an argument..how many years can you go back??..that 2004 MV team was awesome..I saw them in the championship vs New Rochelle..great athletes on both teams

    Dutchess

i was at that game too. Mv played one of section 1’s best teams ev the ray rice/courtney greene led new ro team. I do think they would have had a fighting chance had their qb not got injured n garbage time at the carmel game. He wasnt even supposed to b in on the fateful play. also that year mv had a pair of classics with john jay, classics they spliwith mv winaff edition. I remeber both teams at the enf the game clapping for each other, respecting each other’s game. it was one of the more memorable seasons 4 me

  203. Just a fact

    Football Gods,

you say for me to get my facts straight, yet I laid out several stats and you could not argue one. Not ONE. The last 4 years you had two winning records and two losing records. In years you had winning records your team beat teams with average winning % of under .400. That tells us you beat a mostly bad teams. You can’t change the stats.

Guys come on here and tell you about how Carmel players quit the team after the playoffs so MV’s wins should not hold much stock, and the first thing you say is for them to stop the excuses. But then when we talk 2008, out come the excuses from you. Funny guy. You call be people out for using excuses, but excuses are great when they support your argument. lol.

That’s my favorite stat of all.

  204. Spectator

alot of typo’s n my post. i also want to add that even with a running team like mv that year losing ur qb is a big deal. Theey lost the ability to rad the defense and call audibles when that happened

  205. Just a fact

To set the record straight, I like to see MV do well. But two things. I am from New Ro and in football we were rivals with MV, kind of. I do not know if you can call it a rivalry when one side dominates. I can’t remember losing to MV any year from youth tackle to high school. Maybe I am forgetful and we lost maybe one or two games, but I doubt it.

The other thing, we do have to be objective here. As much as I would like to argue AA South is stronger than AA North this year, from what I saw and the records of the cross over’s games support Dutchess argument. It is just that simple. But MV should be proud they had a big win vs. Carmel, but that was not the same Carmel that played in the playoffs. If MV gets spanked by Arlington this week, then maybe it will sink for the MV fans. If not, it is possible AA North was overrated but I doubt that as well.

The only true way to know, NEXT YEAR, cross over games should be set for either week 2 or 3 to MINIMIZE any excuses. You do not want the games the first week, because we will hear teams were not ready. And if you wait to season end after teams have been eliminated from the playoffs, shoot can’t blame a kid for not wanting to play in a meaningless game( uh oh, here comes every game has meaning police).

    Just my thoughts.

    Just A Fact,

I am one of those policeman…but only from the standpoint that if there are meaningless games…fix it…that wasnt the case before the state playoffs…and I know youre a New Ro fan…for those who think its all about enrollment..when Coach Crocker was at NewRo..one of the best teams and state and in late 70’s in the country for those who dont remember..how about New Ro/Iona Prep with Spencer Ross and Aubrey Lewis on Channel 11 in the 70’s and 80’s?Then Coach Kiernan..still very good teams…Coach Direienzo arrives and still good…but academic eligibility rears its ugly head which is unfair and very stringent to atheltes vs. other kids who participate in extracurricular activities..DiRienzo resigns..NewRo tanks…and they beg for him to come back…loosen standards which are still strong, but not insurmountable, and we have a dynasty..If NewRo with a great coach like Coach Direienzo cant beat Mahopac because theyre upset over not going to states that supports my argument…lets go back to 9 games and 3 bowl games and leave it to conjecture unless someone finishes undefeated..you know all of us on this blog would love to debate two even record teams who didnt play…much like the BCS?Thoughts

I think the best thing would be for Section 1 to expand its season. Mainly because i want to see crossovers not only between the divisions and classes but i also want to see crossovers with CHSFL, LI, and maybe even NJ and CT teams. That way we’ll have a good idea as to where the teams stack up within section one and an idea on where section 1 stacks up in the tri-state

Dutchess, you really do know your New Ro football. I might have to save your response and copy paste it when these new bees or PURE haters come on here and say New Ro was only good starting in the late 90’s which is the biggest fallacy going. New Ro football has been very good for a very long time.

PS. you left off New Ro’s 1982 team that is supposedly one of the best in New Ro history. Right there with 03 and 04. I did not play on that team, but that is what I hear.

    Dutchess,

We will be in the minority on this topic, but I am starting to agree (it is a tough call) with you that the State Tourney should end and bring back the bowl games and rivalries that have suffered since the Tourney begun. The only problem we are adults. I really would like to get the temperature of what the kids that are playing feel. I much rather them have a say in this then some has been or never was such as myself (hopefully I am somewhere in the middle).

Hey I did some more research albeit a few years back and it appears the recently deceased Captain Lou Albano transferred from Mt Vernon in 47’ to go to Stepinac…won all CHSFL honors before going on to an illustrious wrestling and acting career in 52’...it appears this was an issue before Coach Darlos and the Razorbacks and the pilfering you mention???Are you out there?

Im not that old, and agree with you and dutchess in that regard.

I played on the ‘06 MV team, and i remember at the time i just wanted a crack at all the top teams. Besides the ones we eventually played i wanted JJCR bad, pok, and carmel. Also wanted greely again. We gave them that game, moving the ball on their d and turning it over time and again, leavin our d in a bad spot. My favorite game i played was the “prebowl” game against JJEF, a AA north team. They played hard and hit all the time, jus like we did.

Conclusion, when I was in HS playing for the section title was important and playing the top teams was important. I never really thought about the state tourney. It may have been more important to me if it were like basketball and had a federation title but it doesnt. I’m pretty sure im not the only one that feels this way.

  216. football guy32

Ive watched RCK all year. They are probably the best non-playoff team in section 1.Has anyone seen their qb #10. Hes one of the best passers ive seen in a while. They also have great athletes on the edge. I dont know if u have noticed but they have two great receivers in #8 and tight end #32.

    Dutchess,

For you to have that type of knowledge of New Ro football, you either have to be from New Ro or Coached at some point. Or you just have your ear really close to the ground for close to four decades and counting. Great Job in your analysis!

I know this is probably the same for some lower Westchester county area’s but New Ro lost some very good talent to drugs before they made it to a HS football field or during for that matter. I am not going to name drop, but I can think of two to three guys that I played with that were close to or better than Ray Rice that never gave themselves a chance to prove it at the HS level.

What people probably do not realize or never give much thought to, how many North teams have lost GREAT players to drugs before those players had a chance to show case their abilities on a HS football field. I always wondered how many players the North schools must have lost as well. I am not looking for people to come on here and name drop, but I bet there are a lot of stories all over the three surrounding counties!

When it comes to ric i think theres no1 better when it comes to preperation. He breaks down film excellently and we always face what we practice for during the week. What i do think he needs improvement in is his midgame adjustment, and his play calling. He reminds me of coach boon in remember the titans, he has these few plays that he will run and every1 knows it, but he doesnt ever run the fake 22 blast with the backside georgia reverse. I remember when we were playing new ro and the d was yellin watch trap when we were runnin trap and check slant wen we were runnin slant. I think the best playcaller they have is in either Freshman or JV, coach ramsey, and the team will benefit if he called the plays. Also regarding the new ro game, that week of practice is always tougher. I dont like it and i think it wears us out a lil. We dont need it, we will always get up 4 that game. All in all he is a good coach, and i dont want to start a mutiny but his playcallin is too predictable and he has to adjust during the half.

I’m MV all the way and played against some of those early and mid eighty New Ro team MV class of 86 and do believe MV would win and they will prove it Thurday be there for the massacre. Those who talk of coach wright dismissal should look at the big picture before they get what they want. Coach not only graduates 99% of his players but 95% of them go on to college and that definitely wasn’t true when I was on the team let alone he has the winningest record in the history of Mt. Vernon Football. Yes Mt. VErnon is a jewel waiting but as you can ask Spectator the situation is sort of like Coach Direnzo first stint in NR no support from the administration nor the community then they expect to win hoiw many time before crucuial game s didthey come and say o this player can’t play Spectator? Or people who have nothing to do and nothing to show for their existance who try and hate on the program when all he has done is win in situation that is not set up to win. (three losing out of ten) But this is a basketbal town has beeen that way since I went to high school here. But like I said the wheels are in motion to change the culture and soon you won’t see kids from mt. vernon on New Ro’s roster. and then the playing field will be even and lets just see what happens. Ive seen somereal talent come through Mt. Vernon from when I was A kid with Naughton and Fatigate in the backfield to Chris Hughley to today With lowell robinson , Greg harris to name a few The piece thats missing is the same thing that’s been missing from when I was a kid ” If I’m not starting or shinning I don’t want toplay” so some of the best players are in the stands. So there never any depth really on the teams. And just for fact yiou guysdon’t lose to mt.vernon any more at youth level cause you ran to another league to get away from the thrashing you take at the hand s of the ville!! Also By the way Coach Ric started that trend too so be leary cause remember the sun shines on agnat ass every now and then.

Football gods is definately right when he said there is very little support for the football team. It would seem almost as if most people would rather have them fail than succeed. And I’ll also add that the 1 person who ric didn’t graduate gruaduated that summer and went to a premier business college. But the community support 4 MV football usually adds up to fam n a few friends of the players showing up to the games. Only other games that ppl attend are the new ro game and homecomming. I remember even the cheerleaders wouldnt go to most of the MV football games. Its a lil part but it shows the attitude. I believe itll get a lil better now that Donna Pierro is not the AD. Ric does very well with the kids in life, he gets alot of kids off of the path that leads to the street that they are on. Lowell Robinson went to pit out of Junior College, and competed for a Roster spot on the Colts. Greg Harris went to Toledo. No1 can say Ric has done a bad job, especially if u c where the program came from.

Didnt former Jet great Matt Snell have a son who was a star player at MV in the early to mid 80’s…it would be nice if these kids who Coach Wright sets on the right path could come back and speak in the elementary schools and youth programs..but when you have alumni like the Williams’, McCrays, Ben Gordon, Lowes Moore…every little kid beleives they can become an NBA player…for every one of those…how many guys who were locks to be NBAers…never quite panned out…look at Mitchells career at Florida..not sure how hes done at Rutgers? That to me is the real challenge..I think WP has suffered in recent years also…WP was always a top flight football program with alum like Art Monk, Jay Saldi, Sam Bowers and top players in the last 10 years like the Summers brothers, Ike Nduka and Spencer Ridenhour..but face it WP is best known for basketball right now and at the top levels in this region its year round…what do you think kids like Gordon or Salahuddin wouldve been like at receiver..or Jabari Hinds in the backfield..I wish these kids would see that guys like Allan Iverson, Greg Paulus, Tony Gonzalez, did both at the highest levels..good luck this week

when i was there ric brought lowell robinson, then at pitt, to speak to us. talked about stuff like how grades can mess up scholarship opportunities, so i know he tries to bring old players back. as far as basketball/footballl players go one of our recievers was the pg in 06. and he did aa great job at both. But the reason there arent and likely wont b many of these dual sport athletes is bcause there is basketball year round. Though its not mandotory and may take the form of open gym the kids rather work on their basketball game than use the time to play football. probably beecause of how its so glorified in mv. with all this stacked up against it it willl b very hard 4 football to catch up. they have their own shoe!

    Spectator,

Thanks..Im hoping with Cimmino he will encourage kids to play multiple sports as AD..but dont think it’ll happen…Tony Vetere was a football guy as AD back maybe 10 or more years ago and is an NFL ref and his dad has done Super Bowls as a ref and still couldnt get over that hump…you probably know up here POK is a great basketball school..not on the level of MV but still elite in my mind and we finally made it back to a championship..and there are kids who will help walking the halls and streets…as I said Im a Rick Wright supporter in that everything Ive heard is hes a great leader of young men and example of how to do things in life the right way…wasnt he recruited for the job because of his success in the youth leagues??Theres enough kids anyway if something would resonate with the kids..thats great to hear about Lowell Robinson, I saw he and Greg Harris play and they were fantastic…also I did see Chris Hughley play when Mt Vernon ran the I and he was the tailback and amazing…went to Tulsa as I remember..now my only knock or question is…I know New Ro has been great with the wing t..but would kids be more interested if it was basketball on turf as they say at Hoover HS in Alabama, in the early 90’s under Coach Hebert I think they actually ran the run & shoot the precursor to the spread, there were guys with sick passing and reciving numbers…some type of spread offense where more kids get involved, I think would be succesfull…if you work with the Razorbacks and install the offense youll have a pipeline of QB’s who could run it…I think the Iona QB is a MV kid as is Jeff Mack…throwing the ball 6 times a game and running bellies and counters isnt much fun when youre trying to create a culture or if youre 15, 16(kids and their parents are stat conscious beleive it or not?)...and Ive seen Arlington and RCK up here and Mahopac run the wing t with success but never get to the championship..obviously New Ro..Gorton in years past..Roosevelt(did win it but not on wing T-James Atkins and Jimmy Kennedy) and now Somers…but look at Roosevelt and POK..both spread teams and the kids have fun out there..JJCR made it a few times to the finals in AA and Carmel made it last year and won it in 98’ throwing it around the field 25 times a game. JJCR scrapped the wing t in favor of the spread after losing again to New Ro..its tough to win a championship 3-4 yards at a time and not fun for kids??Thoughts??

You guys have a great conversation going here.

As a Stepinac fan, I followed White Plains far more closely than New Rochelle from the early-70’s (when Stepinac stopped playing a yearly game against New Ro and began playing White Plains) through the late 90’s. Obviously, I’ve followed New Rochelle more closely since the Ray Rice teams. I remember Rhett and Jefferson at New Ro. Who were some of the other great players at New Ro in that era? And was their ‘82 team really nationally ranked?

If you go way back in time, to the 50’s-60’s and earlier, both New Rochelle and White Plains had several teams that were considered among the best in the nation, most of which before my time though.

    DutchessFBFan,
I believe Matt Snell’s son was Beau who played RB at Iona Prep, not MV. I could be mistaken though.

Interesting talk about MV football. If Coach Wright is graduated 99% of his players and 95% of them are going on to college he should have a job for life without question. Those numbers must be way higher than the rest of the school. I think the real problem with MV football team is the strength of their basketball program. Kids in MV grow up wanting to play basketball, not football. Also, from my understanding MV’s basketball program is a year round commitment and Coach Cimmino doesn’t like/allow any basketball players to play other sports. Imagine some of the recent basketball standouts on a football field – scary thought. A player as good at basketball as Jabari Hinds, forget about playing football. But if just the second tier basketball players considered playing football – watch out. Dinham at OT. Odayne Clarke at DE along with the other 6’6” kid from last year. Apparently the kid who graduated last year, Sean Harris, was the best football player in the razorbacks program in junior high – better than Mack and Woodson-Samuels. Imagine that. All that being said, its hard to argue with Coach Cimmino’s policy, because almost all of his kids end up in college playing basketball. There are worse problems for a kid deciding whether he’d rather play football or basketball in college on scholarship.

  234. DutchessFBfan

    Hoops,

I totally disagree…maybe a second tier kid who gets financial aid gets a full ride in football..also MV cuts a ton of kids yearly in hoops…dont you think theyd help the football team..Cimmino should get his head out of his behind because now he represents the entire athletic community…not just hoops..the same has happened in WP where Spencer Mayfield has kids thinking theyre going big time…beleive me their football tradition is much stronger…and they have a waek AD who wont stand up to Spencer in Salvestrini and previously Scarano….how about Cimmino and Mayfield encourage kids to play multiple sports??...remember Steve Morgan from WP an 85’ grad who went to Hawaii for football and hoops as a TE and power forward?Someone will fix this in our lifetime in MV..imagine Mack, Samuels, Coach Darlos son(Darlos James(maine) and a few basketball guys? You wont beat them!!So how does it happen…Coach Darlos are you out there? Is it that MVHS is really a war zone by all accounts…or is it football isnt important? The hoops guys thrive in that same bad environment??Help me understand??That all being said..Coach Wright has done a wonderful job by all accounts..”forget” for lack of a better or more acceptable word…the naysayers!!!

    Dutchess

regarding ur 1st post: I do think think the offense is a lil too ol school 4 the kids to enjoy it. Most of the kids that play these days didnt grow up watchin the old packers offense or dont realise that the falcon’s full house is a wing t formation. So the kids playing would be more excited to sling it down the field. Also that would probably have kids wanting to play more than just rb. The teams are never that deep because around the school, not on the team, but around the school not starting is heavily looked down upon.
ragarding your 2nd post: Yes it is a warzone in there as people describe. You only need to find 12 people thru 4 grade levels that can cope. and like was said, hundreds try out, so their are plenty to pick from. Furthermore, once there on the team then they dont have to worry about much. They’re held in a certain regard and the rest of their life is consumed mainly with basketball. Simply put, they dont have time to get in trouble.

    Hoops

Coach Cimmino does allow his players to play other sports. Like i said earlier, i played with one and im certain about another that did football/basketball. But Cimmino does instill commitment in his players and there commitment to getting better at basketball usually outweighs there want to play another sport like basketball.

There is only one way to get more kids playing football in MV and that is winning. The winning season have helped and the bowl win was big but we wont see MV football turn that corner as far as student interest until we win a section championship or 2.

  236. Hoops fan

    Dutchess,
I don’t think we actually disagree that much at all. Sure if a kid had a hypothetical choice of a full ride for football and a partial ride for basketball, he’d be better off with the full ride. But in reality, these days a kid from the basketball or football team at MVHS has a pretty good chance at going to college for free (whether it be scholarship, financial aid or college loans) if they are talented enough particularly with decent grades. Where it seems we do disagree with with Coach Cimmino’s policy. With all the success he’s had on the court, all the kids he’s helped get to major colleges and the 95% of his kids who go to college on some sort of basketball scholarship – I think he’s earned the right to require a 12 month commitment. I do agree though that in the case of certain kids that aren’t star basketball players, they may be better off encouraged to try football, at least on the freshman and JV level (if in fact the freshman and JV level is well coached/organized).

You do bring up a good point mentioning Coach Mayfield as well. I can’t remember too many 2 sport stars at White Plains recently – in the past there were many. There were a bunch when Mayfield took over though – Mike Summers, Shante McGovern, Melvin Parris to name a few. I do remember Morgan from White Plains – I didn’t remember his first name and I didn’t know that he went on to Hawaii. Here’s another New Ro great that I just thought of from around that era – Randy Forrest, who I think went to UTEP. Another all time great from New Ro that I thought of was Lester Gordon who went to Ohio State as a RB. You mentioned the big guy from White Plains who went to hawaii – there was another great football player from White Plains in the late 70’s/early 70’s named Dennis Morgan (who I think played for a couple seasons in the NFL, I wonder if there is any relation.

  237. HSfootballFan

    DutchessFBfan,

Though I agree you need to have a balanced attack at any level of football to be successful, your thoughts on “slinging it around 25 times a game” are not absolutes… You better have a pretty good quarterback to do so along with plenty of athletes around him, and a steady pipeline of such personnel in order to run these systems…

These spread systems emerged down south in Florida and Texas where there is nice weather and kids that can play year round in conditions that are always conducive to throwing the ball. That is not always the case around here, and on top of that the Modified rules dont even allow shotgun formations or motions, which make it harder to build a spread system.

Carmel won the section in 98 as a huge, physical, grind it out team that had a great defense..they certainly did not throw the ball around the way they have with Schilling the last few years.

JJCR has made it to the section championship once since going to the spread and they did so with some incredible talent everywhere (Stockel, Bohlander, Whalen, Filauro, Zoppo, etc.) They were loaded in 06… But, they had most of their success when they ran the wing-t. Its known as a predominantly running offense, but they always had very athletic quarterbacks who could throw and they had 1,000 yard passers year in and year out.

New Ro runs the wing-t and North Rockland rarely throws the ball… Neither team seems to struggle…

It really comes down the players….If you have an athletic quarterback and good players around him, then you can have success running any offense you want..Monroe-Woodbury is a good example…They went to the spread and have had great success, but QB Dan Scalo is unreal, and they still run the ball more then throw it…

The passing game will attract kids to a program…But winning games will attract even more kids, and simply throwing the ball because its trendy doesn’t guarantee winning…

  238. Hoops fan

    Spectator,
I stand corrected about Coach Cimmino’s 2 sport policy (or in this case, non-policy). I shouldn’t have commented on it not being 100% sure. I thought I’d read something about that in the Journal News a couple years ago. either way, I don’t remember a two sport player at MV in a long time. Maybe there have been some that I don’t know of. whatever the case is, I wouldn’t blame him. You’re right if there was a greater draw for the football team there would be more demand.

The more I think about the MVHS football issue, the more I think about their track record and how hard it would be to turn it around. MV has always been a basketball school and has about as good a basketball history as any school in America. As long as I can remember, MV has really never had great football teams. I can remember a couple good years here and there, but never anything sustained like New Ro or White Plains. I also re-thought about the Snell kid Dutchess mentioned from Mt Vernon and I think he’s right. I can’t remember his first name (maybe Arthur?) but I think he ended up playing HB at Kansas in the mid-80’s. To prove my point about MVHS’s football futility, as long as I can remember the only two football players from MV I know of before Robinson and Harris recently who played big-time football were Snell and Chris Hughley over 20 years ago (I could be forgetting a couple, but not many). In the recent cases of Robinson and Harris they each had to go the JUCO or prep school route before the big time – that either means they weren’t prepared academically, weren’t developed enough as football players or both coming out of MVHS. That can happen once in awhile with any kid, but if it happens with two in a row thats a bad sign about something. The last time I remember a MVHS basketball player having to go JUCO or prep school was probably Rasul almost 20 years ago.

    Just a fact

I see you are still delusional when it comes to New Ro and there not having Mt. Vernon kids on it. The running back DutchessFBfan is refering to Arnold Snell played for New Ro as a child and my starting Qb on varsity played for the chiefs so your facts are not straight. in regards to not geting the competition from MV it was after coach wright dominated NR they decided to move to the rockland league just for the record the razorbacks take an annual trip to he championship in florida.

  240. Hoops fan

This talk about MV’s football program is really interesting. I would argue that before winning, a strong foundation has to be built. Even a modern day Vince Lombardi or Bill Parcells would have trouble winning immediately in MV (by that I mean beating New Ro) because they’d have a hard time convincing the best young athletes to play football.

Here is my amateut at a checklist of 3 essential things for MVHS football success:
    1) Strong, charismatic and well-organized coaching staff – not just HC, but also assts, coordinators and HC’s on freshman, JV and junior high level. Also, helps to run the same system on all levels like in New Ro. 12 month program almost necessary.
    2) Resources! Basketball is easy, all you need is some jerseys, basketballs, referees and a gym. Football needs lots of cleats/jerseys, pads, extensive weight room, summer camp fees, etc, etc. And for football you need 3x-4x more of everything than football due to numbers. Keep in mind, MV’s basketball is very well funded, but most of it is private money and some from its successful alums (ben gordon). There are no Ben Gordon’s from MV’s football program. MV’s athletic dept obviously doesn’t have a lot of money to throw at a football program, so I would think a lot of the necessary funds would have to come privately.
    3) Even if Coach Cimmino has no problem with his players playing Football as well, you’d need to instill at a young age the desire for kids to play football in MV – not an easy thing to do. The basketball team is glamorous – they travel all over the country, sends kids to big colleges every year, have a great history of NBA players. Football has none of that to compete with.

You should get your facts straight numerous kids leave MV going to juco’s and it’s not that they’re not prepared you must come from this community to understand it though westchester is one of the riches county in america MV has to be one of the poorest cities in america. A lot of these children come from single family homes where education is an after thought so when they began to be recognized for their athletic prowess they have already started their transgression academically. So here only option is athletics as an option out. What has to happen is the same comprehensive approach used in basketball to be applied to football.

U hit the nail on the head with your 3 points.

point 1) Razorbacks up to Varsity all run the same system.

point 2) Last year the team was out with buckets trying to collect enough money to have a season. The basketball team has sponserships from Gatorade and nike (They have a shoe) And as far as cleats and camp goes, each player has to come up with the money for them.

point 3)How do you compete with that?

Lowell’s going to a JUCO was a matter of grades. I also know Charles Winslow an OT at MV got an offer from toledo but he decided to take an academic sholarship to morehouse instead.

There are no shortage of athletes on MV football year after year. A lot of times we lack discipline, but we’re stocked with athletes. Running the spread would also attract more athletes. I can think of a few MV quarterbacks that could sling it (probably wouldnt know because we barely throw). Aurthur Cowins, Rodney Mack, Sean Cowins, Michael Connelly. So i dont think running the spread would be a problem. And even if we run the spread we’d still run it about 60% of the time. We could even run the spread in addition to the wing T, as a package. It would definitely help against teams like New Ro, who practice the wing t all summer and are familiar with its intricacies. I quote coach Yoates from remember the titans, “These kids gotta start having some fun if you want them to put some point on the board for you.

    Football Gods,

I hesitate to respond to your gibberish, but here will be my last response. You can have the last word.

Obviously, you do not read too well. I clearly stated MY teams, that means the teams I played on. So in the 80’s could there have been someone from MV on a New Ro Youth tackle team, yes. Of course, there were 5 teams each year( 4 different levels). I clearly stated no one on MY team was from MV. I also clearly stated, MY teams (one’s I played on) dominated MV. EVERY year. Like I said maybe out of 9 years of football, we lost to MV two times, the most. I think we were undefeated, but some of those early years are a little fuzzy.

I might have to stop by the New Ro YTL hall of Records(lol!) to get some actual stats, just to make you happy.

Listen, in basketball, you guys dominate, no question. When it comes to football, MV has never measured up to New Ro. Maybe a fluke year here or there, but that is about it. But enough talk. If someone knows where you can find scores of varsity football games, please post the link. It would be very interesting to see what the record between New Ro vs. MV is from 1980 to now. MV would be lucky if they have 10 wins in close to 30 years of football.

    football gods,
What facts did I not get straight?

I know MV well. I lived there years ago and have had friends and family in the community all my life. Whatever the socio-economic problems in the communcity – we don’t disagree on that – Coach Cimmino has found a level of commitment that has enabled almost every one of his basketball players to qualify academically. If it can happen on the basketball team, it can happen on the football team. Someone else referenced that Coach Wright has a great track record with kids and their graduation rates/college enrollment, which is fantastic. I only referenced two players because those were the two biggest stars in MV of recent years. Whatever happened to the DE who graduated last year (I think) who had a huge year statistically with sacks a couple years ago?

    Spectator,
You make a great point about there always being enough athletes on MV’s football team. Maybe a large part of the issue is getting enough big guys for the line and coaching them properly. The Wing T is a great offense and has been proven successful many times locally, but you need the horses up front to make it successful. Not necessarily huge size, just good linemen. Someone made a good point about the culture in the school not respecting seoond string players – that must be really tough on a football team.

Another issue for MVHS football which is common for any fertile ground of athletes that doesn’t have a strong local public school is the propensity for some of the top players to end up at private schools. People have mentioned Jeff Mack, I’ve heard Mack actually lives in the Bronx, so he couldn’t end up at MVHS. But I believe Woodson-Samuels and a couple other contributors from Iona are from MV. We all have heard of the abour Coach Darlos’s affinity for Iona Prep and his son going there. Rashaad Slowley from Stepinac was also from MV I think. That being said the last two Journal News Players of the Year were from MV (Slowley and Woodson-Samuels) but played at local Catholic schools. Thats a two edged sword. 1) Kids are leaving MV for Stepinac and Iona occasionally but also 2) the kids who leave seem to be doing very well at their destinations. Slowley and James got full scholarships. Woodson-Samuels probably will. Hard to argue against two better football programs, with better academics, more discipline, far safer environments and track records getting kids into colleges on scholarships. There are enough good athletes in MV that even if the occasional kid leaves for Iona or Stepinac, they’ll still be a very good team.

U make a good point. MV is as bad academically as ppl or the stats would show. MVHS is like America, it has a dissappearing middle class. 30 40 percent of the kids graduate and go on to schools like Harvard, Baruch, Penn state, Buffalo, and Binghampton, (jus a few i remember) while the remaining percentage either drops out or struggles to barely get their GED. Any kid with his head on straight wont have a problem matriculating MVHS, but perception is all that matters.
