Weekend playoff recap

October
27

This will be kind of brief since I already went so in-depth on Friday’s games. Just a quick look back of the playoff games.

Don’t worry, I’m not ignoring the non-playoff games completely. I will highlight many of those in this week’s Game Balls, which I’ll post tonight:

Class AA
New Rochelle 38, Mount Vernon 0:
This is the game the Huguenots are known for — where they take off from the rest of the pack.

They had their ups-and-downs this season and nearly lost last week to John Jay-EF. But once the playoffs begin, this team annually goes to another level. Are they unbeatable? Absolutely not. But there’s certainly a larger gap after this game than maybe anybody anticipated when the playoffs started the day before.

New Rochelle gets another rematch this week with White Plains. Don’t be shocked if, like Mount Vernon, the score from the second game is a little more lopsided than the first.

North Rockland 14, John Jay-EF 7: It’s amazing what a good defense can do for you.

The Red Raiders were getting pushed around up front in the first half of this game before a key adjustment (North Rockland slanted its defensive ends to cut off Jay’s pulling guards) and some added pride can do for you. The Red Raiders ate up Jay’s line in the second, on both sides of the ball, and held the Patriots to 29 total yards and one first down.

Angelo Williams had both touchdowns in the second half and was exceptionally defensively at end. He broke through several times and made tackles in the backfield on plays that went for 3-4 yards in the first half.

Jay has to be second-guessing its decision to punt on third down there in the fourth quarter. With the game tied 7-7, it “quick-kicked” twice — once on its 7 on third-and-long and the other on its 5 with third-and-9. The “quick kick” is when you snap the ball, pitch it to the running back and let him punt it so there will be no return. The second kick went only 15 yards, setting up North Rockland’s winning score with 24 seconds left.

The decision, though, was puzzling to me. Obviously, field position is important and you’d have to assume Jay would be satisfied to get to overtime with the way it was unable to move the ball. But isn’t time just as valuable as yardage? If Jay ran two extra plays, it would either force North Rockland to use timeouts or burn a minute off the clock. North Rockland instead had all its timeouts on the final drive. And the touchdown came with 24 seconds left.

Class B
Nanuet 41, Briarcliff 7:
The game was actually close for a while before the Golden Knights broke it open in the second half.

Tom Hanney and Gabe Ostrow each ran well and Nanuet’s offensive line controlled the game in the second half. Ostrow scored three touchdowns.

Saturday’s rain was probably a welcome sight for Nanuet, which was facing a Briarcliff team that likes to put the ball in the air. The Bears did anyway but threw three interceptions.

Sleepy Hollow 13, Irvington 12: This one kind of threw me for a loop. Just when I thought Sleepy Hollow was ready to take off, it needed a kickoff return for a touchdown to go ahead of an Irvington team that was four yards away from pulling another upset.

The Bulldogs drove to the Sleepy 4 in the closing seconds but ran out of time. George Beringer made the game-saving tackle for the Headless Horsemen, who’ve won three in a row. Sleepy now travels to take on Pleasantville.

Irvington has nothing to be ashamed of with this one. Six days earlier it pulled off one of the biggest wins for the program this decade, coming back in the final seconds to beat Briarcliff and earn a playoff berth. And to be this close to beating Sleepy is a significant accomplishment.

Pleasantville 38, Lourdes 23: Nolan Robinson had another stellar passing effort, throwing for 209 yards and four touchdowns.

Take away the Nanuet game, where Robinson completed just 7 of 26 passes in the howling wind, and the senior has had a remarkable season throwing the ball. In the six games besides Nanuet, Robinson has completed 54-percent of his passes, is averaging 147 yards per game and has 14 touchdowns.

If Pleasantville can get by a Sleepy Hollow team that will surely get pressure on Robinson, it will likely face Nanuet in the championship. Not that you want to think that far ahead, but can the Golden Knights duplicate the defensive effort they put up in the first meeting with Pleasantville? That might be a lot to ask.

Kennedy 34, Pelham 0: Perhaps it was because the game was so one-sided, but I left this game really impressed with Kennedy.

Before the game started Pelham coach Dave Moskowitz made the statement: “Watching this team on tape, I’ll tell you that it’s not just Schuck.” Those words were prophetic.

Dylan Schuck ran well, but so did David “Boomer” O’Dell, who had a pair of touchdowns. Pelham was clearly keying on Schuck, Kennedy’s star tailback, which left the lanes open for O’Dell. He ran hard and was able to lower his shoulder a few times and plow into defenders.

Both were superb defensively, as well Marc Palmer, who was as good as advertised at middle linebacker. Tough, strong, fast and able to cover both sides of the field. A very good player.

Against Nanuet, Kennedy will need to get more out of Tyler Trodden, its quarterback. In the three passes Trodden threw, I saw he had great composure and could sling it a little. The Gaels barely called on him against Pelham. They’ll need him this Saturday.

Class C
Croton-Harmon 34, Rye Neck 0:
Another game where Rye Neck finds a way to hang around early, but Tyler Dorien plays his best late.

Croton’s quarterback was fantastic game, throwing for 70 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 111 yards and two scores. Joe Tralli and Matt Tralli each caught touchdowns, and the rushing attack got by without injured Tyler Keppler and Kevin Soares. Keppler should return Saturday and, if Croton wins, Soares should be ready for the final.

Bobby Dusconi and Kyle Riccardi are healthy on the offensive line and at linebacker. And Dorien has quietly had the best running/passing stretch of any quarterback in the area since losing to Bronxville three weeks ago.

Croton-Harmon is contently laying in the weeds why the planet falls in love with Bronxville’s size and depth. Don’t count this team out just yet.

Bronxville 41, Lincoln Hall 12: No shock here. Lincoln Hall is definitely an improving program. But it just not ready to take on a team as big and disciplined as Bronxville.

Jack Near returned to play a little quarterback for undefeated Bronxville, completing its roster for the first time all season. Dillon Mitchell still took the majority of snaps and has done a fine job filling in. But if Near can return to even close to being the player he was before getting injured at Dobbs Ferry, forget it. Nobody is touching this team on this half of the state.

Take arguably the section’s best line and put it in front of Near at quarterback, with Brian Murray and Liam Berney mixing up the carries in the first three quarters and then Mitchell, who’s a bull, coming in to put the game away in the fourth. It’s a pretty nice formula.

Dobbs Ferry 46, Putnam Valley 22: Another huge day by Devonte Brailsford gets the Eagles back to the Class C semifinals for the second year in a row!

That enthusiasm was a joke, of course, considering Dobbs won seven straight titles and pretty much considered the state tournament apart of their season on an annual basis. I know the scores. But it’s so astounding that people are dismissing the Eagles as contenders. I would be a little cautious of that, especially the way they’ve put the ball in the endzone of late.

In their two losses to Bronxville and Hastings, they were sputtering offensively and never got into the a flow. But I’ll attest that you can be smaller and thinner than your opponent as still win. All you have to do is be confident and cohesive and good things will happen. Dobbs Ferry is that right now.

Hastings 39, Albertus Magnus 23: The Yelow Jackets won their sixth straight as Luca Cobucci threw for 169 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a score.

I didn’t think Albertus would be able to stop Hastings enough and it didn’t. Hastings had 19 points in the second quarter and scored first in the third to get ahead by a healthy margin.

Hastings moves on and now has the most unenviable of tasks: facing Bronxville on the road. Hey, if you’re Hastings, you’d have to beat Bronxville at some point. Perhaps it’s better now before the championship with slightly less pressure and coming off a game where Bronxville was barely tested and you put up 39 points.

The Yellow Jackets have momentum right now. Combine the fact Bronxville hasn’t faced a team like them all season and you have to give Hastings a fighting chance in this one.

Back with Game Balls later.

Dobbs would have to have made one heck of an improvement to be able to play with Bronxville. Brailsford is a very good player, however, if you man up player for player Bronxville is more talented ( minus Brailsford). If I can borrow a few words from Uncle Charlie, Bronxville also has a “decided schematic advantage” in the coaching and gameplan.

I have seen Nanuet play many times and they are very well coached. They are very small in the trenches and they either are too good or their comp. is lacking. Its my opinion that the comp is pretty weak. However, with the devestation that the Conklin family has gone through this year, I would love to see them bring home a chip.
NewRo will not get a scare until Monroe. The score might be close vs. NorthRoc or WP but the game will never be in doubt

  2. scary

Saw Monroe twice this year. People on the blog were complaining about Somers having weak opposition – they should see the teams Monroe has been playing. New Rochelle should have their way with them (but then again, that should have been the case last year as well).

  3. BEAR

HOW MANT STARTERS WAS PELHAM MSSING???

  4. X

As an Iona Prep fan I really take pity on New Rochelle and the situation they are in every year. They are too good of a team in too weak of a football area. They are easily the best team in the best division available for them. Hopefully they wont lose due to a selfish play this year.

  5. Section1

bronxville has seen better teams than hastings…..they beat croton…who is much better than hastings

  6. Class C Stuff

Croton played Hastings at Croton to start the season. With 53 seconds left is was tied. Hastings twice came back from 14 down, on the road. Much better than Hastings?

I like Croton, a tough, experianced team that is playing well. I would not want to play them in this round. But give Hastings the credit they deserve. It will be a very good game.

  7. Sec1

What Pville will need is there #1 running back Mike Morra to be able to play on Offence, after missing the Westlake game and only playing on Defence last week. Hopefully by Sat he will be able to go full speed both ways..

  8. Class C

Should be great football the next 2 weekends because we have exactly what was predicted. Four teams all seeded #1 or #2. Won’t be any upsets here because any of the 4 is quite capable of winning it all and then doing well in states. All I can say is good luck to all of them and may the best team win.

  9. RiverDog

Section 1, how is Croton “much better” than Hastings? I’m not sure that’s a very accurate assessment. After all, it took a long TD run in the last 2 minutes of the game for Croton to beat Hastings during Week 1. Hastings has preceded to win 6 straight, and has size, depth, a senior laden team, and a slew of playmakers; the right ingredients for playoff success.

Bronxville has physically dominated teams this year, partially by destroying their resolve at the line of scrimmage, grinding them down over the span of four quarters. Take Croton for example, one of the physically bigger teams in Class C, who was unable to score in second half vs. Bxville, as Bxville amassed 352 yards rushing on the day. With that win, Bxville easily cemented themselves as the team to beat in Section 1 Class C.

However, the Hastings match up is an interesting one. Hastings’ front seven is experienced, gritty, and has size. Will they be able to stop the Bronxville rushing attack? No, probably not. But if they can at least limit their success, Hastings spread attack might be able to keep them in the game, or even ahead. Hastings has a number of threats on offense, and has played teams with similar offensive strategies to Bxville, while Bxville really hasn’t seen a squad like the Yellow Jackets. Not sure who the advantage will go to here, but it’s interesting to note.

As for Dobbs Ferry, they do seem to be peaking at the right time. Brailsford and Connet have their offense operating with a steady rhythm that we haven’t seen from Dobbs’ all year. Croton will attempt to use it’s size and depth as a serious advantage versus them, as did Hastings and Bxville, who both dominated Dobbs at the line of scrimmage. However much I’d love to see a Hastings-Dobbs title game this year, and no matter how apprehensive I am about counting Dobbs out, they just don’t seem big enough, and more importantly, physical enough, to win the Section.

All roads appear to lead through Bronxville, but it’ll be interesting to watch the playoffs unfold.

  10. rocket

    Scary,

Monroe’s schedule has been tougher than New Ro’s. MW has defeated two state ranked teams (# 20 NFA, #22 Warwick). They also beat and put up 63 pts on Section 4’s best AA team Binghamton (whose only 2 losses are to MW & NFA). Both NFA & Warwick are very dangerous. NFA has the speed and athleticism to match-up with anyone in the state including New Ro. Warwick’s offense is explosive…however their defense is horribe.

New Ro’s biggest comp was non-ranked John Jay & White Plains. New Ro is still Section 1’s top dog, but to say they played a better schedule than MW is not accurate.

  11. X

    rocket

while its hard to say that new ro has a harder schedule it isnt ridiculous to say they arent better itll be a great game

  12. WESTCHESTER

Five kids playing 6 positions. Their Quarterback, Fullback (who plays MLB as well), an offensive lineman, nose guard and defensive end (who plays some offense too).

  13. Joe M.

Dillon Mitchell did more than a fine job this season..he stepped up to the plate and took over as Q.B. when Jack Near was injured, aiding the Broncos to undefeated status; pretty amazing for a third string Q.B. This Kid was amazing in last week’s game throwing unbelievable passes executing flawlessly. The Broncos have a great team this year.

  14. bigdaddy

having lived upstate near newburgh and knowing most of the kids on the current team, NFA would get smoked by new ro, they have no passing game so when u shut down the run as monroe did, they look utterly horrible, the gap between monroe and nfa is huge, new ro understands they have to be able to throw the ball and have a much much better coach, NFA coach is brand new and as hard headed as the previous head coach chatam that he puts running backs as quarterbacks with no ablility to throw.

What are Pk 2 loses this year? and the scores??

  17. RCDS parent

    Kevin,

RCDS lost a heartbreaker to Hamden Hall this weekend, 13-10. You might want to check out the King-RCDS game next weekend. King is above and beyond the best team in the FAA and could probably compete for the section 1 class AA title. I think King could play with the best of them. They beat that Hackley team you saw a little while ago 40-6, so if RCD could somehow knock them off it would be huge. I believe the game is going to be on MSG.

  18. come on

    rcds,
its getting ridiculous… you guys are 3-3 in a weak FAA league. i understand that your a small school and have no depth and have a great deal of injuries but seriously thats football you guys might have been able to compete with section b teams like kevn said before but not anymore…so no offense but kevin probably wants to see better teams than you guys

  19. real music 93

    do bowl winners get rings?

  20. rocket

    bigdaddy,

I didn’t say NFA was better than New Ro. There’s a reason New Ro is #2 in the state and NFA is #20. But to undermine NFA wouldnt be wise. They have some great athletes. Granted DiRienzo is a great coach. But counting NFA out is never wise.
The main point was this..New Ro has not played anybody better than or ranked higher than NFA or Warwick. Hence, the argument that their schedule is pitiful is not fair because New Ro’s schedule is extremely weak. Every year people say MW plays nobody and then they beat New Ro. That excuse is getting old. Both of them play schedules that are not that strong. Plain and simple.

    X,
I do like New Ro, and I think theyve quietly been dominating teams. But this MW team is the best team they’ve had since the 06 team. Although there defense is not as good as that team. New Ro is head and shoulders the clear favorite for Section 1 but I’m just not sold on New Ro being better than MW right now and neither are the voters in the state poll.

    Who,
PK’s losses were a 13-12 loss to Eastchester and a 34-28 loss to Fox Lane. Both of those games couldve been wins. But I think those were healthy and humbling losses which are now reaping benefits for Poughkeepsie.

  21. bigdaddy

im not sure they can handle monroe either, actually i dont think new ro has a chance to win that game if they get there. NFA is just talent, once you get to other talented teams, u need to have something else going for you.

  22. One Time

Come on Pville lets get it done this week!! Mistake free football. Good luck!

  23. SectionABC

    Croton is better than hastings.

  24. why

I dont understand throwing passes to Coach D’s son in New Ro #5, Why? His no type WR.. I am sure you can throw to somebody else. That type of play calling will cause us to lose to MW.

  25. Bad Info

rocket….u make some valid points, but the only reason why MW is ranked ahead of NewRo is because they started the year ranked ahead of them, and they haven’t lost. That being said, the only reason why New Ro is ranked #2 is because they started the year #4 and the two teams that were ahead of them lost. The way the state poll works is that they rank teams after week 2 of the season, then move teams down once they lose. If you don’t lose you move up the rankings. For example; If a team started out say #10 in week 2, then all the teams ahead of them lost, they would be ranked #1. It has nothing to do with whether or not they truly are the #1 team in the state, but whether or not you’ve lost. For example, I think both Fort Hamilton (#7) and St. Joe’s by the Sea (#10) are better than both MW and NewRo (or anyone else ranked ahead of those two for that matter), but since both of those schools started lower than the teams ranked ahead of them, they haven’t been ranked higher. If they both keep on winning, based on the way the NYSPHSAA playoffs go, you’ll see both teams move up the rankings, not because the pollsters think they are better than the teams that lost, but just because those other teams lost.

  26. Glorious

    Come On,

You need to relax. RCDS parent is just letting Kevin and all you bloggers know that there is more football than just Section 1 public school football in this area. RCDS is playing a team that no doubt is one of the best in the area because of three players that they have on its squad. You guys talk about our league being weak, but its usually just 1 or 2 teams that can’t compete. All the other teams can compete with all the C schools and most of the B’s in Section 1. Look at Saunders, Pawling, Valhalla and Gorton. My son’s pop warner team can probably beat Saunders, but you never hear us saying that the B or AA divisions are weak.

Recently in Section 1 we’ve had Ray Rice, Courtney Greene, and Glen Lee go to Rutgers which before they got there was a loser program. Also Kelvin Smith, and Doug Hogue went to Syracuse which is a current loser program. I dont want to take anything away from them, because they were outstanding performers in our section and all got full rides and represented well for Section 1.

The kids that RCDS are playing against this weekend would blow all those kids out of the water. Silas Redd who will play at PSU for Joe Paterno in January and will probably be awarded his US ARMY BOWL ALL AMERICAN invite very soon is arguably the best runningback in the country, let alone our area. He won offensive MVP honors at the exclusive MVP camp in Florida in early August. He beat out Lache Seastrunk who is ranked as the #1 RB in the country by Rivals and Scout.

His teammate Kevin Pierre-Loius commited to BC at the end of his soph year when he wowed them at there summer camp, and is still comitted to them now and will also enroll early. He’s a monster on both sides of the ball and with his freakish combination of size and speed will probably be on the field early in his career.

Two weeks ago they showed a University of Virginia D lineman returning an interception for a touchdown on ESPN. That was Nate Collins, the pride of Port Chester, NY that played at the King School and will probably get drafted in April. Some other Section 1 talents that played at schools in our league and are now at good programs are Kevin Decker (Brunswick HS, U. New Hampshire), Kevin Royal (Brunswick HS, U. Virgina), and Tyler McFarlane (Brunswick HS, Bucknell and now Hofstra). There are plenty more players but these are just examples.

SO PLEASE DONT SAY THAT OUR LEAGUE IS WEAK!

    Respectfully,

    Glorious

  27. rocket

    Bad Info,

I def agree. Overall state rankings are overrated. They are based heavily on the previous season and reputation. I would agree SJBS is better than MW and New Ro, but not really Fort Hamilton. And of course there are plenty of LI and WNY schools who can play too.

My main point was just refute the point to not let MW’s schedule fool anyone. Section 9 and Dutchess County have steadily been on the rise. Regardless of MW’s schedule they’ve won the last 4 Eastern NY Titles. New Ro of course is right there! In fact in 07..New Ro had that game in the bag. But if people want to look at a teams schedule they need to be fair. New Ro’s schedule is pretty weak too. Of course its not their fault. But its good to see two Hudson Valley teams that are only about 35/40 mins away from each other ranked 1 & 2. Hopefully one of them can take the state title!

  28. fairchesterunfairness

    Glorious.
    Nice Try,
But all those extremely wealthy blue blood schools always skim off some of the top talent from section 1 …....
Of course a poor, talented athlete, will enroll at the “elite” places after guys like you tell them that is the way to succeed?

  29. Glorious

    Fairchesterunfairness,

You have a point about some schools skimming from Section 1 talent, but all the kids we get aren’t poor. How many families on the Rye High or Harrison teams can pay for private school education. Many of them can. Those players seem to be very talented. Its up to the families to send there kids where they want them to go. Fortunately for our communities we have superb public school education so our kids have great teachers, good administration, and solid programs.

My brother went to private school for middle and high school, but went to public school in the Bronx before then. He was a good athlete yes, but he got into his private school because of his brains and not for his athletic ability. He would have succeeded without that experience, but I’m glad he had both.

  30. Rerun

    Come on,

The “weak” FAA has produced more division one players in 2 years than section one has in 10 years. Also, about King, You didn’t even mention Eric Joyner, their CB, WR that is a possible Division one player. To add onto that, their line is massive. King 09 would win section one class A, they’d beat rye. Hopkins 08 could have definetely competed for section one class A. RCD 07 could have competed for the section one class a title. Don’t talk about a league you know nothing about.

  31. Football Man

RCDS fans, I honestly feel bad for you. RCDs fans make few comments on this blog, they are not annoying like Iona or Eastchester fans. They rarely comment. Then, when they do, They get the entire blog telling them they are a joke, they would be a section 1 doormat, even though I think they are a pretty solid team.

  32. football giant

I happened to see King playing the other day on MSG network. I had already known about Silas, but Pierre Louis is a complete beast. He is a man child.

I can say I know nothing about this league, but the players on that King team are big time.

  33. Rileygirl

Glorious, I can tell by your posts that you are an intelligent man and know a good deal about section 1 football and football in this area. One thing I have to disagree with you you is that statement that Redd and Pierre blow Rice, Greene out of the water…Rice coulda and shoulda been given every accolade coming out of high school. He was a great, great player and the only thing holding him back was the fact that he carried the ball 5 times a game until the CBA game where he was dominating until he hurt his collarbone.. Rice is turning into a top NFL back, he and Greene turned awful programs into winners over night. Greene is on an NFL team as well. The odds of both of these players playing college 4/5 years is quite slim and the odds of them going to the NFL are worse. Kelvin has also had NFL experience. I see the point where you wanna give the King kids props but lets have them make it thru a career of college before you want to compare them to NFL players

  34. Just a fact

    Riley,

I was going to say some of that last night about Ray and Courtney then I just bit my tongue(or fingers).

    Nice Post!

  35. football gods

Its mighty funny that no one seems to care about how New Ro always seems to have kids on their team from other communities. I mean if they where a private school and where recruiting that’s one thing but to have kids that where in other programs, and now in theirs is a little suspect everyone seems to be turning a blind I to the cheating they do, i.e. the extra scrimmages every week with Iona, everyone seems to want to speak about Iona but I know that’s not legal in public school either. We all want to win but at what cost. Cheating is cheating no matter how you do it and who you are. Everyone wants to jump on the public vs private school lets get on clean programs versus dirty ones. Kevin I wonder with all your investigative reporting will your blog discuss this or will we all continue to act as if the water so much better in New Rochelle that they always have great football players or are they cheating like every other program that always seem to retool then eventually gets caught committing wrong doings. I mean its just not practical to think a public school doesn’t have lean years. Even North Rockland with all their success has had down years. Please don’t try to say its the coaching cause are saying that now Lou and his staff is that much better than Casarella and his staff, I doubt it. Its that unfair advantage that everyone wants to be associated with a winner and will do anything to be apart. Maybe the AD in new Ro will get some integrity and stop this, but I doubt it cause they’ve already showed their win at all cost attitude.

  36. RiverDog

    fairchesterunfairness,

I’m not really sure what your point is. That bright and talented athletes shouldn’t take advantage of opportunities afforded them? That public school programs should do a better job of holding onto local athletes?

Even in a county like Westchester, lauded for our affluence, there is a great disparity between our top High Schools and those that struggle. It’s a national phenomenon, and something that gets into much deeper topics that probably aren’t appropriate for this blog. (Also reminds me about the discussion regarding the CHSAA from last week.)

However, if you, as a student, were either bright enough, or talented enough athletically (or both), to get offered an opportunity at a school with top tier academics and excellent athletic facilities, along with great coach to player ratios, you’d say no?? In a lot of ways, these schools demonstrate both sides of the spectrum regarding the fabled “American Dream.” If a parent is financially successful, they have the opportunity to ensure that their children get the best education, though they undoubtedly pay a lot for it. And if a student is bright and talented, they are given this same opportunity through financial aid, often from alumni donations. I don’t see anything wrong with that.

    Glorious, RileyGirl and RCDC Parent,

I’ve seen King Low play a few times over the past few years, and can’t really describe how impressed I am with Silas Redd and Kevin Pierre-Louis. Silas isn’t waiting to hear about whether he is an All-American, HE GOT IT. He ran for 303 yards on 9 carries in last weeks monsoon of a game. Penn State’s 2010 recruiting class is ranked 2nd in the country, with Silas at the top. Kevin is BC’s top recruit, and I have no doubt that he’ll be starting at OLB by his sophomore year. He absolutely dominates from LB. They have more depth than other teams in their league, and could certainly play with the top schools in Section 1. (Personally, I’d love to see to see them play Rye or Poughkeepsie.) I doubt Kevin really has the time to check them out though with the Section 1 playoffs underway, and (with all due respect to RCDC), it won’t be a very good game – King is going to run around, through, and past them. It’s what makes both of them so special. Also important to note is that King has a third Div 1 recruit, WR Eric Joyner, who is apparently choosing between Virginia and Clemson.

As for the comparisons to Ray Rice and Courtney Greene, it is a little early to speculate about that level of success. With Rice, we are talking about a rising NFL star afterall. I saw him play in 2004, and watched Sammy Maldonado in 1998, and have to say that both Redd and Pierre-Louis are easily just as talented as they were at similar stages of their career’s. It’ll be exciting to watch two “local” players (Stamford’s close enough to be considered local, right?) play for top tier collegiate programs.

  37. Rileygirl

Riverdog the quote was ” blow them out the water” I did not say they werent talented, I didnt say that they dont deserve the status that they have gotten. The fact is that a lot of things happen from the time a kid leaves high school to their final year of high school. Health, grades, family issues. I know for a fact that Redd will not start on offense from day one, Pierre , its possible because BC lacks athleticism at the LB position. If they start and star from day one in the NFL than the quote that they blew the kids out the water will have some validity

  38. Big Fan

    Football God:

The water is better in New Rochelle…..

  39. Lauder

I doubt Rye country Day beats King. RCD is a decent team, but King is probably as good as the top AA teams. THis is the second King game thats going to be on MSG, I think they want to let the tri state area know just how good this team is.

  40. Wolfhound

Was Morra injured for Westlake and Lourds, or did the coach just rest him. After all, the offense had no trouble running with 4 other backs.

  41. Sec1

Yes morra was injured for westlake, and played only on D in the Lourds game because of the injury. Hopefully it will allow him to play O this Sat..

Ive seen RCD play and as a witness I testify that they can compete well even in class A.

Hey guys, you should start watching MSG Varsity, they show schools like these play. After seeing our own section 1 teams then seeing those guys, I know they would compete fairly well.

That King High school would still be in the thick of things at this point, they are real good. I’m not getting paid for this but MSG Varsity is where its at!!!!

  43. 099

I wouldnt say RCD could go near the section 1 class A title. But id say they could be in middle of things in Class A, maybe on par with a harrison, yorktown, lakeland team.

    football god,

New ro has only been dominant since the late 1990s. They have just had a 10 yr run of great/good players joining the football team. It’s not the schools fault if some kids want to play at new ro. I highly doubt there’s more than 5 kids on the team that don’t live in new ro.That sounds like a weak excuse to downgrade their football program.

  45. slacrosse

Dont know anything about rcds but I do know that this yrs hopkins team that scrimmaged rye would struggle in b/c, let alone in A.

Assume rcds is LOTS better then hopkins this season??

  46. RCDS parent

    Slacrosse,

Hopkins team last year was a powerhouse, and the year before they that were a powerhouse. This year they 1/3 of the team they were last year. They lost to Hackley, Hackley then got handled by RCD. Hopkins also just beat 0-5 Kingswood Oxford, the worst tema in the FAA, by the mere score of 23-20.

  47. are you crayz!!!!!!!!

FOOTBALL GOD IS A GOT D%&*MN NUT!

WHERE DID THIS STUPID IDEA COME FROM FOOTBALL GOD MAYBE YOU ARE MAD THAT NEW RO IS KICKING YOUR TOWN HEAD IN EVERY YEAR. TELL YOUR TOWN COACH TO CHEAT! IF YOU THINK IT’S THAT SERIOUS. ACCORDING TO YOU EVERYONE HAS DIRTY HANDS.

    Riley,

When I said the term “blow them out of the water” was in regards to what type of player they were in high school. Watching Ray, and Court in high school was special, but Silas and Kevin are on another level when it comes to high school, not college or the pros. Courtney was good but isn’t as big or athletic as Kevin. Ray on the other hand was damn good, and I don’t want to take anything away from him because he was so special, but this kid Silas will take someones spot if he doesn’t redshirt his first year. PSU’s Evan Royster will probably turn pro so that spot will be up for grabs even though Stefphon Green (another NYer Kennedy HS, NYC) is next in line. What our New Ro boys (lets not forget Glen Lee), and the McCourty brothers have done for Rutgers football was tremendous, and hopefully some more Section 1 kids can help them get out of there downward decline again.

  49. Glorious

    slacrosse,

The team that scrimmaged rye isn’t the hopkins team of old. I’m sure that they didn’t pass the ball much either, so that scrimmage must have been boring as hell. This is there rebuilding year and a lot of there top players are underclassman. Last years QB is a safety on the Yale team, and there line averaged about 6’2 265. In addition they graduated 18 seniors. Thats a lot for any team to rebound from.

  50. class c CHAMPS

dont get it twisted hastings is decent but when you cant pass on a team (croton) easily the best dbs in section 1 including all state wide reciever joe tralli, all section runnin back tyler keppler, star qb with speed and brings a pop, and matt tralli who’s man coverage is lock down. ur not gonna win. however, bronxvilles defense is good except there dbs who dont have much speed and wont be able to cover a 4 wide set. id love to see bville lose but id rather have it croton and bville in the final so croton can have that sweet revenge. joe tralli > than ur team

  51. football gods

To someone and are you crazy

First off someone that’s when they decided it more important to win than to build character kids so when ever it started it wrong and if they have one kid ( even though I know for a fact they have more at least 10 kids are from other school disricts) Its wrong they’re not suppose to have one kid from out of the disrtict on the team. And in regards to tell my town coach to cheat, not everyone has a win at all cost attitude where I’m from its more important to have character and integrity than to always win but I know there are some people who follow this blog who know the real truth ask thrm to comment or do they not wan to offend Coach Direnzo and his staff. But lets not stray away from the facts once a cheater always a cheater!!!!

  52. Joe caching

Hmmmm b’ville beat croton with their second string. hmmmm

  53. Big Fan

If there is any kid on the New Ro team, they must have a legal residents in New Ro district. If not, they are paying at least $12,000 to attend NRHS. I don’t believe someone will pay that amount just to play football. Back up your assumptions with facts. Who are these kids and where do they live?
