Spiraling out of control

October
26

I’m not going to lie. This blog has been very difficult to read the last few days.

Between the rants about the socioeconomic situations, reaction to the comments by a particular coach, gloating about victories, rubbing in defeats, recruiting in the CHSFL and just the general tone people take with each other, I’ve really been frustrated reading the comments section of the blog. It used to be 95-percent civilized discussion and debate and 5-percent drivel. Those numbers have balanced out towards 50-50 in the last week or so.

What’s happening? Yes, it’s playoff time and the emotion has been ratcheted up. But does it have to come at the expense of intelligence and decency? What happened to sportsmanship and manners? Just because you can hide behind a computer screen, do those things no longer exist?

Unfortunately, I cannot hide. This is my blog, my face and my name.

Nobody cares as much about high school football in this area as much as I do. But the comments on this blog this weekend have almost turned me off it entirely.

A very respected coach emailed me Sunday disgusted about things that had been written on here and asked “How could you let this go on?” Although I know I can’t be held accountable for how free speech is used, I couldn’t help but feel embarrassed by the general behavior on this blog. Again, my name is attached to it and, like it or not, I’m going to be associated with the content. It comes with the territory.

Initially, I wanted to come on here and write a scathing post about this. But it wouldn’t do any good. I just want to ask that, before you rip into a 17-year-old or call a 70-year old a “scum bag” or even tell another human being to “shut up” in a comment, ask yourself if it’s totally necessary and appropriate. If you think it is, then maybe you’ve got bigger problems in life than high school football.

Although I don’t agree, I understand that some want to put down Somers for losing and want to criticize DeMatteo for his comments (which I contend many of you aren’t interpretting correctly). But remind youself before you denegrate another person this one unchanging fact:

It’s just high school football.

Please, take it down a notch here and don’t let one of the most popular forums for football become a haven for nastiness and abuse.

you hate scarsdale for no reason
you said we would only beat gorton by 2
you said we would only beat ramapo by 1
you said we would lose by 3 touchdowns to mahopac

  2. sportsfan

Compleely agree with Kevin. Clean it up.

  3. statesman

I agree Kevin. However, if a person sour about a loss went as far to call kids from your almer-mater a bunch of 20 Year olds on the team, I think you would have felt the same way I did. I apologize for telling another person to shut up, but surely it wasnt just over a game. Thanks for your continued work. It’s the best time of the year to me. Playoff Football with hoops right around the corner!

  4. MIke Hoops

Didn’t I say at the beginning of the year AA is unfair because the bigs schools have a huge advantage!!!

Well look at the AA Final 4
    New Rochelle
    North Rockland
    Arlington
    White Plains

    In Enrollment Section I:
    Arlington 2646 (882 per grade)
New Rochelle 2588 (863 per grade)
    North Rockland 2159 (720 pergrade)
Mounrt Vernon 2107 (702 per grade)
White Plains 1714 (571 per grade)

How can Mamaroneck at 1088 compete??? (363 per grade) or Scarsdale 1096 (367 per grade)?????

  5. 1-C

Mike Hoops -you are right -these schools are double the size of teams like mahopac and carmel..

  6. Huskies Forever

Kevin,it’s all about class. Some people have it,some people don’t.It’s the way of the world.Keep up the good work…

  7. Just a fact

Kevin, there is no defending what Coach D said and I have been one of his biggest supporters. He should apologize. There is no such thing as taking what he said out of context, he should have known better. But people that feel the way I do should have responded as such, no need for the insults.

Coach D has done great things over his life time for TONS of young student athletes. If there was a Sainthood for coaches, he would be one of the firts nominees.

  8. 3 Yards And A Cloud Of Dust

    Kevin,

Unfortunately, the blog is also a reflection of our society as a whole. Many have lost the value of just common respect towards one another. You can not control what the kids say on this blog, but the adults, that is a different story. You wonder why some kids act like they do, just look at their parents. There are a lot of frustrated football has-beens or never-where’s who live thru there kids who are playing and unfortunatley get way too wound up and into it. I have always tried to keep it lite and amusing. I wish some others would do the same.

  9. Husky 92

    Good job Kev

  10. Gmen

The key phrase in Kevin’s comments was “It’s just high school football” and these are just high school kids trying to play a game that’s fun. Vast majority will never play again after high school. Let’s talk football.
If a kid wants to be a good football player – he can come from anywhere. If money/socio-economic played into it – Westchester would be a hotbed for D1 football – and it is not.

  11. joe b

I think Coach Ds comments were directed at the people who criticized his team not at Poughkeepsie. It was just sarcasm for the people who really know nothing about the programs they criticize. Mostly directed at the people Kevin is talking about.

  12. 3 Yards And A Cloud Of Dust

    On a lighter note:

Tell me what is more exciting right now, the playoffs or our picks. As Just a fact stated, there is a logjam at the top. I can feel the competative juices flowing. I think wj=hoever wins it should be honored with a plaque at the Section One football dinner this year. LOL

  13. 10960

DeMatteo thinks that many people feel that his team is no good and that they play against inferior competition.

The Idea is, How can you say Somers is no good and say PK is good if PK barely defeated Somers. If Somers is no good then maybe PK is no good as well.

How can a no good team go neck and neck with a very good team. Either both are very good or both are very bad.

Thats my interpretation…... and I personally think Somers is very good. (my opininon)

As far as Kevin Devaneys Post goes….... He hit the nail on the head. I used to blog everywhere I go; In class, at work, at home, you name it! (thanks to smart phones) Now the sweet taste of the blog has gotten bitter and sometimes I simply have no interest.

The other day I didn’t want to blog. A very interesting weekend of football happened and we were in a full blown topic of sociological issues and demographics. You kiddin me?

Anyway, Lets not make this forum an issue about fixing the blog wither…. lets just move forward and keep it FOOTBALL!!!

The only thing I disagree about is kevin saying, “It’s Just high school footbal.”

High school football goes beyond just football. Thanks to High school football many kids found father figures, brotherhood, and were pointed in the right direction in life.

Not that I don’t get Devaneys point.

  14. ! ! ! !

HAHAHA! I love how Husky 92 says good job Kev when he is the worst one on here!!! Husky go AWAY!

Also Kevin talks about the people on this blog when he should watch what he writes too. He wrote that article on Roosevelt messing up the Rye locker room and put it in the paper and on this blog. What he wrote was not facts and was assumed. He should look into that story and he would find out what really happened! Now everyone looks at those kids the wrong way and makes jokes and comments!!!

  15. yonkers

I feel Dematteo brought these comments on himself. He has projected himself as the greatest high school football coach for years. He has degraded kids and coaches over the years, thru building his name and reputation at no cost. Now it is all catching up to him because the playing field is level and he is just an average coach with a big ego who just cares about himself and he can’t win now.So lets feel sorry for him, thats pathetic, how about let him write a letter and encourage po. to win this week.IT’S ABOUT THE PLAYERS NOT THE COACHES,THATS THE PROBLEM.

  16. Gael Force Winds '98

    Kevin,

Maybe there is a way you can enforce an official “registration” on the blog instead of entering a “name”, and an “email address”. Is there anyway you, or lohud rather, could make it so that users register their username and have to log in to blog. That would eliminate alot of “tough guy bloggers” and minimize the amount of people who go on for 1 post with a different user name all together. I just think it would give you guys more control and keep the blogs alot cleaner. Just some food for thought.

  17. GAEL FORCE WINDS '98

Perfect example, i jsut posted this without a valid email address, and used my own name…

  18. Jim

    !!!!!!

What really did happen in that locker room?

  19. Gael Force Winds '98

So people know they can get away with saying whatever they want to say with no repercussions what-so-ever…I think they need to enforce a user free registration, so that people cannot just freely write and say negative things, curses, berate young players, as they please.

  20. HSFB Guy

I’m sure many of you adults in here said something in public or to someone else and wish to have whatever was said be forgotten or taken away. If that’s the case, Coach D feels that way.

However, if it is how Kevin, Myself, and a few of you guys in here (10960, Joe B) which seems like the logical theory-then there’s no need to go off the deep end. There are articles and days I wish not to blog because I see people insulting people based on mere myths and legends as opposed to facts.

Coach D is a great man-I know most of the coaches on that coaching staff. I had friends who grew up and went to somers and some did other sports and some got to play for Coach D. You guys easily talk smack about Somers-don’t forget they’re KIDS just like Poughkeepsie and Rye. Did you guys ever take the time to think about them? they were undefeated, giving up 6 points total in 6 games going into that playoff game. They BARELY lost. Had it been 99-3 poughkeepsie then yes I see the right to post in some way; but to say Somers is this and that you are insulting Poughkeepsie the same way. I feel sorry for those kids and that staff that worked hard ALL SUMMER and came up short. What did most of you people do this summer? Work? sit on the couch and watch tv?? Or talk smack during the camps about “my old high school is better than yours, I went there in the early 90’s and yeah I’m better than the kids out there still!!” “No way, I was there when FDR was president and we would whoop the kids there now!”

Being a Coach I know the sides of winning, losing, draws, upsets, the worst feelings in the world, as well as the high points and the surreal. Alot of parents and people are living through these kids, and its quite a shame.

My parents didn’t do that to me; they allowed me to pick and do whatever I wanted to in High school and College, and they came out to support me. They didn’t push me, they allowed me to be mature and make my own decisions-with the awareness that some choices come with good consequences and some bad consequences.

Kevin’s doing his job, his job is to report. News 12 was so biased on the recent parkway tragedy that it made me sick. They did a poor job of reporting just to protect “one of their own”. Let Kevin do his job, how would you like it if he showed up to your truck on your run and told you how to do it? or show up to your office while you posted about the income and wealth of residents talking to you about how you should work harder? You wouldn’t like it.

It’s one thing to post an opinion, especially picks about the upcoming games. It’s another to start online fighting about this town or that town and this school or that school and about how a Legendary Coach, who gave us one of the greatest lines “Never turn your back on a student”, is such an evil person?? By the way, your “Saints” of coaches-I’m not naming them to avoid more replies on this-will RUN UP the score given the chance. It only takes the losing team to signify total defeat to get the vultures off of the carcas (putting in an underclassmen at qb or having the obvious younger kids come out to play while the big names are on the bench).

“The only thing I disagree about is kevin saying, “It’s Just high school footbal.”

High school football goes beyond just football. Thanks to High school football many kids found father figures, brotherhood, and were pointed in the right direction in life.” -10960

    I agree.

  21. ScottinRye

    Kevin:

Since most fans are being economically forced out of supporting their favorite professional sports team (seat licenses, outrageous single game ticket prices) HS football has become more of an outlet for a larger group of fans who are outside the circle of students, alumni or parents.

I appreciate that these are just kids, and that they will move past HS football into jobs and careers.

Hopefully the vast majority of people enjoy these games for the spirit of competion, rivalries and quest for excellence, and leave some of the insulting and demeaning posts to themselves.

I hope that you don’t get discouraged and keep this oulet for the true fans.

  22. NyackFan

Now I’m lost at what the blog is for. Consistently there have been conversations and social commentary about issues outside of football scores, predictions, and who is playing. The biggest conversation I’ve seen is the public vs private school (CHSFL) et al. Never mind the issues of school transfers, not coming to summer practices, whatever. And several of the related social commentary outside of scores is begun by Devaney. So, I thought, mistakenly, that this blog was open to that. So back to the football scores, then, I suppose.

  23. The Nyack

    HSFB GUY

    Good Post.

I’m going to copy You by throwing in that quote as well

“The only thing I disagree about is kevin saying, “It’s Just high school footbal.”

High school football goes beyond just football. Thanks to High school football many kids found father figures, brotherhood, and were pointed in the right direction in life.” -10960

I’m a product of that quote, Thank you Cas if you see this.

  24. Rileygirl

Kev, you have to see the peoples email address when they sign up for the account. If somebody writes a silly post email them and tell them about whats acceptable and what isnt. Syracuse.com and NJ.com have a system in place where posters who are idiots get kicked off. As I have said before I was kicked off NJ.com for writing that Schianos a joke. I have been posting on this forum as long as its been on and I do enjoy it.
Folks are getting on coach Dematteo because hes the king of the mountain. His quote can be interpreted in different ways and its a lot eaiser for people to take offense with his words because hes seen as the Dean of coaches in section 1.
Kev, if you thought that Dematteos comments were hurtful , would you acknowledge it ? Im not saying you have to , just curious

  25. Power House

    Kevin-

DO NOT REFORM THE BLOG. Annonymity is essential to the success of this blog. If people don’t have the right to privacy on here, they just won’t come on here as much.

Some people want to be heard but don’t need to be recognized.

It’s your call if you want to take that gamble.

  26. HowdyDoodyTime

Kevin, my take is that you reap what you sow. You said it yourself. This is “your blog, your name, etc.” It happens on here because YOU allow it to happen. Start deleting any post that personally attacks others, or that inappropriately criticizes others. I’m not saying people shouldn’t be critical. But do it in a classy, respectable fashion. I know plenty of knowledgeable, intelligent people on here that stopped posting because of all the personal attacks they opened themselves up to because Kevin refused to have those attackers banned, or those posts deleted. People will allow you to do what you allow them to do. If their posts were deleted or they were banned, people would not posts what Kevin is complaining about. Kevin’s asking for people to “police” themselves, but that never works. People want to be policed, people need to be told what the limits are. People will always push the limit. The limit that has been established on here is that if you put your or anyone else’s phone number or email address on here, you get deleted. Any obvious profanity, deleted. But you are “allowed” to personally attack people, denigrate people, and abuse people, so it continues. Want it to stop? Simply delete those posts and ban that person from posting. The solution is easy, does the Journal News have the stomach for the remedy??

  27. HowdyDoodyTime

    HowdyDOody

The problem is that Kevin has no way of policing these posts, unless they make the users (us) register and log in via name and password.

    For example:
I just used your name, and thie was the email is used: “afkjdkfh@lkjdfljdlf.com”.
thats what people do when they want to attack someone…very rarely do you see people use their real name when they are getting into it with someone, or making a tough post.

    -Gael Force Winds ‘98

  28. Power House

One thing we can conclude is that most bloggers have some kind of interest in high school football. Who would come on here if they didn’t care about high school football?

  29. WingTGuy

    Kevin,

I have been disappointed in this blog most of the year. I agree with you that last year it was 95-5 in the football versus drivel equation.

It has been heading towards the 50-50 all year. Just look back at the entries earlier in the season. The public – private debates were disrespectful with name calling and a great deal of chest pounding. You can pick out the screen names easily by a quick review. Most of them continue in the same vein regardless of the subject matter.

It has gotten worse and worse until this past weekend it went over the top.

I have been on this blog from the start and have enjoyed discussing section 1 high school football. This year it has not been the same level of discussion.

I think you need to change the rules somehow and make people more accountable for what they say.

I do not see how you personally can monitor all the comments. I know you try to read all of them, but maybe we need some kind of peer monitoring as well. Other forums/blogs allow people to request that entries be removed.

If this was available to us it could minimize some of the lengthy list of inappropriate comments.

Sorry 10960, I think we should try to fix the blog. I, like you, used to follow it a few times a day. Now I check every other day or so. And it is becoming less and less.

Several times during the season, you have tried to bring people back to Football. It works for a while, but then goes right back. Kevin has had to come on and make statements about the demeanor on the blog many more times this year.

The disagreements and discussions used to be about football with a few personal insults involved, now they are more personal insults with a little football involved.

Thanks Kevin for what you have done for HS football in the lohud region. I still enjoy reading your entries, but not the blogs as much.

  30. HowdyDoodyTime

Gael Force Winds ‘98…and the Sky is Blue. You are stating the obvious. Most people on here do not “post as others” as you are claiming. Most post under anonymous names because they do not want to open themselves up to personal attacks. Jim and John Malone are the two who always post under their real names (Keith Fagan used to, but after Not Keith Fagan abused him constantly, and them Fagan outed Tribou as being Not Keith Fagan, that all stopped and Fagan hasn’t posted), but no one else does. And those two have been personally attacked plenty of times. You must be a relatively new blogger, because you are unaware of what happened on here. The Journal News was in the process of switching over the blog format. While that was going on, the “sign up” area was different, and it appeared to require people to have to post their real names, email addresses etc. “Bloggership” plummeted. People refused to post if they had to attach their real names to the posts. If you post a response to an article online at the JN, you have to give a legit email address. Those responses are minuscule compared to the posts on here. The Journal News sells advertising space on Kevin’s blog based on the number of posts he receives for each entry. Less posts because of requirements to use your real name = less $$ for the Journal News. That’s why they allow you to post using any name you want. And, because people are cowards and say things behind a fake computer name, this abuse will continue. They ONLY way to keep both the JN happy, and the legit posters happy, is to delete and ban. We’ll see if Kevin or the JN have the stones to do that. I suspect they won’t, and the abuse and idiocy will continue.

  31. Power House

Funny how someone who hides behind a screen name can call others cowards for doing so as well.

  32. Husky 92

!!!!!! Kevin said stop. And look at you starting in again. Geeeez. The locker room incident was three weeks ago. The proper authorities are taking care of it behind closed doors. Rooservelt is protecting there kids. Rooservelt is making a fantastic run. Congratulations Indians. You should be more concern about the UCONN guy being stabbed and no victim. Today was the funeral. Poor kid, good athelete, bright future, wrong place at the wrong time.

  33. DutchessFBfan

    Kevin,

I love this site but not much of the nonsense..I think you’ll agree we get on each other but mostly in a good natured way..and most times when a regular takes a shot at a kid as I did with Sulla and Brerton its pointed out and we apologize…I still love coming on and getting at it with the informed, but it seemed a lot more kids and the language has gone south in my mind…if people dont like Tony Dematteo and disagree with the interpretation of his comments or running up score..fine..say it..but the s———comment is out of line and the other stuff Im not sure of..but I find the CHSFL and Rye arguments and consistent Eastchester stuff nauseating..lets keep moving forward..a suggestion to all..dont respond to the idiots..theyll go away!!

  34. WAM

I agree 100 oercent the people who come on to these blogs and rip 17 year old kids should look at there lives. It is just high school football. The reason the kids should be playing is to have fun with their friends. There is no need for people talking negativly about them. Highschool football is suppose to be fun

  35. Just a fact

I am rewording this so not to cause controversy, since Kev would not listen when I proposed it other times.

The above list is excluding high school kids getting called out by name for steroid use. I whave almost been on my own trying to policeand defend this, and it is the last thing I want to be doing. But I know it is the right fight. It is more upsetting for me to see those remarks then comments about and adult, great coach or not.

The blog has no place for either!

Hoepfully going forward, Kev can keep a tight line with this as well.

  36. Gael Force Winds

HowdyDoody…Thanks, I did’t know that…It makes alot of sense since profit drives everything…

  37. Spectator

I agree with the folks that said people should register. The registration is’t to expose anyone, they’ll still be anonymous. No1 will see their email address, only difference is they’ll be attached to 1 name. If they go over top one time they get a warning. They go over a second time they get a warning. The third time they go over the top, the get blocked from the blog. That would settle things down and keep it mainly football. The blog is a bit different now than in ‘06 when i first got on.

  38. oldnintheway

    Kevin:

I agree with almost everything you said. Civility was definitely missing in action in a lot of posts over the past few weeks, and I don’t think this is a place for socioeconomic discourse or things of that nature. But I do feel that if a coach exhibits unsportsmanlike qualities himself, there is a right way and a wrong way to criticize this. Coach D is a legend in these parts, and I’m sure there are people and football players from the communities he has touched that will come out and give some of us a good tongue lashing, and maybe rightly so. But I still think his post-game comments were way off base this week. His COMMENTS, not the man himself. If there was even one iota that I ran up the score on a particular team, and the next time I played them I lost in a close contest, the more appropriate thing to say might be something like “that team certainly came a long way from last year. We gave it our all, and I take my hat off to them”, rather than the attempt at humor he made by saying something like “well, they say we stink, so they must stink”. It comes off as poor sportsmanship, doesn’t give the other team its due, and makes it more about him than what happened on the field . I’m sure Coach D has given his players many lessons in success and sportsmanship; this just wasn’t one of them. Of course there’s pressure, but it comes with the territory. Anyone that has worked with kids in any capacity understands this. I don’t believe in calling someone vulgar names, and I don’t believe in tearing down teenage kids, but responsible discourse concerning adults never goes out of style. That said, I wish Coach D all the best. He truly turned the Somers program around.

  39. HS football Fan

Thanks Kevin for doing this Blog: I think people just have to read their posts before hitting submit.

Enjoy the game kids, most will never play again.

  40. Jeff P.

    Hello, Kevin,

I definitely agree with what you said. I’m sure most people here appreciate the work you’ve done and are grateful to have a forum where we can share our passion for HS football. Unfortunately, lack of civility is running rampant all over the Internet, and I guess it was only a matter of time before some of it seeped into this blog. Personally, I don’t think Coach DeMatteo meant to show disrespect towards Poughkeepsie; rather, it was likely an instance of when frustration got the best of him. Nobody’s perfect…

Come to think of it, I feel that frustration and disappointment with some of the playoff results have exacerbated some of the negative behavior here. Obviously, it’s no fun seeing your team lose, but it’s probably even tougher to take if your team usually advances through the playoffs. Hopefully everyone will settle down, let the players play, and enjoy the games…

  41. EAST PESTER AKA CRY SOME MORE

    Kevin,
I lost alot of respect for you today in that if something stated on this blog is offensive to you or contrary to your companies policy- PULL IT. It’s your site. Stop the lecture and stop telling people what to say.Your copmpany is famous in their editorials for beating up on politicians, people that are charged with crimes, some teenagers, that end up innocent and on and on. Remember if we all go away so does a good chunk of your work.

    gael force,
What repercussions for free speech do you want to impose?Maybe we all BE FORCED to sit an watch an Iona Prep game.

  42. booboo

Bottom Line: The young men involved in this sport dedicated a big part of their lives to be part of a team, win or lose. They all went into the season with the intention and desire to win but that is not always the outcome. They all knew this from game 1 and they played out their seasons. They all deserve credit for their dedication and hard work. If it weren’t for them Kevin would be out of work and we would all be doing something else. We live in a free society, the only person you are in control of is yourself.Let’s try to act like gentlemen.

  43. X

Kevin this post had good intent but means absolutely nothing to me. I love debating these topics does it get out of hand sometimes? yes, but its a blog involving people’s hometowns, kids and even the kids themselves of course it gonna get heated I see nothing wrong with the way the blog. One thing I am sick of is the famous quotes “its just high school football” or “their just kids” high school football means a lot more than that to people it means pride and involves a lot of passion. As a former player I know that I loved the blogs and I was often on these blogs defending my team.

This blog is just a way to make High School football expand longer than just the weekend. The day someone comes forward and says this block has harmed them in anyway is the day it needs to be reformed.

  44. football giant

Let me preface by saying I am a Nyack Fan. In my opinion, the CHSFL gloating is what pushed people over the edge. A lot of chest pounders have went to bed for the season. But the loyal fans are stuck dealing with the aftermath. Thus causing a feeling that you must validate losses and the CHSFL as a hole. That has ticked people off and caused the blog to suffer. For those who may have missed what has taken place, I think I can break down has been established over the past month:

    1) CHSFL is the best and Section 1 is weak.
    2) Only New Ro has a chance to win a game in the CHSFL
    3) Iona Prep can potentially lose another 3 games and people will still say they are great. And Kevin may still have them ranked.
    3) The older CHSFL fans find a need to use the word “choose” a school over being recruited to go to a school.
    4) New Rochelle is only good because of their enrollment size and lack of competition
    5) North Rockland only wins games because they have the refs in their back pockets.
    6) Rye only wins because they have wealthy kids. It has nothing to do with their devotion.
    7) Hoops Fan and Husky 92 may be the most hated bloggers ever to walk the face of the earth
    8) Nyack losses games because they are less fortunate
    9) Eastchester is still making excuses for not making the playoffs again
    10) Kevin finds value in the Crazy Dragon’s posts!

    Think I covered everything.

I READ MOST OF THE POSTS AND I FEEL THAT CERTAIN WORDS SHOULD BE BANNED FROM THE BLOG .THE BLOG MUST BE KEPT DECENT AND CLEAN…...BUT THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH SHOULD BE ALLOWED…LETS FACE IT THE MOST HORRBLE ARGUMENTS ON THE BLOG ARE SHORT LIVED AND FORGOTTEN WITHIN A FEW DAYS AND MOST, I AM SURE ARE FROM THE YOUNGEST OF BLOGERS-....I HAVE ENJOYED BATTLING , IN A FUN WAY WITH THE OPPOSITION FANS…ESPECIALLY LAST YEAR WITH OSSINING,RYE,NYACK, FANS

  48. chochy

I thought coach D doesnt read these blogs

  49. Big Fan

    FOOTBALL GIANT:

Your comments on New Rochelle is out of line. They win because of the kids who work hard, Coaches who know what they are doing and prepare for all games the same way no matter what the competition. They don’t have a say in who they play, they just go out and do the best they can, usually that is better than thier opponent.

  50. football giant

Big Fan… your missing the point. These are not MY comments or feelings. This is what has been discussed/taken from the blogs over the past month. I don’t agree with any of them.

  51. Gmen

    X-
I also am a former player, played HS football at Rye. And I couldn’t agree more with the statement “it’s just high school football”. The players realize that, at least the players I played with. Don’t make it more than it is. Supporting the team, debating play calls, how teams played, etc is all well and good. But it’s just a game – and when I went to college the “life or death” that it had while in high school was gone. I still remember very fondly the good and the bad. I still root for the Garnets, always will, but had HHS beaten us this year – then good for Harrison.

  52. jcirocco

Reading these blogs the last few weeks have been painfull to say the least. For the most part we go on these blogs to discuss High School Footbal period. I could care less what a coach thinks about what is said, as long as it is not critical to a student athlete. There was some great conversations the first four weeks or so but it got to the point where I thought my wife was secretly blogging. There has been way to much crying about players being hurt, “thats why we lost”,the refs were terrible, “thats why we lost”.For most of you guys you know this is all part of the game, but for some there is always excuses.
Although I really like High School Football and enjoy the games and matchups ,im at the point now where I cant wait for basketball season to start. The posts seem to be much more sensible and more knowlegeble

  53. Just a fact

    Football Giant,

nice summary. Reading through it, I thought I was reliving a nigthmare. Just kidding. For the most part, all has been in good fun.

I agree with Big Joe, the words need to be cleaned up.

Chochy, good point about Coach D though it most likely was a friend or player that probably got word back to him. I would assume, but I could be way off base. Maybe this blog has gotton so popular, coaches are reading it too.

If I was coaching I woul not come on this blog. But that is just my take.

  54. scary

    football giant

    awesome post. LOL!

    X

You have hit the proverbial nail on the head. Perfectly written.

  55. scary

BTW, Coach DeMatteo IS the best in Southern New York. When he speaks, people listen – sometimes they listen too hard…

Kevin, you do alot for Westchester Football and I think everybody appreciates that. The CHSAA issue, however, is primarily your own creation. By refusing to rank teams based on their results, instead doing so based on potential (yes, I am talking about Iona), you have left out some deserving teams who have produced. This has been gasoline on the fire of the public – private debate. This is not to take away from all of the good you have done, only to point out the obvious.

  56. # 8 Fan

    let it go!

  57. FUMBLE!!!!

Cmon leave the coach alone. Look at Bill Billichek. He has show no symphaty towards Mangini. He wont even shake the guys hand after a game. Its personal I think, but Bill is still with New England and he has never apologize to New York Jets staff. Its what you call a rivalry. And I think Somers and P’town have something brewing.

  58. Grid Iron

I think the problem with the blog is that there are a great amount of teams in this area, but the blog is dominated with Iona this and Iona that. If it’s not their fans bragging all the time and Hoops Fan being their legal representative, than it’s everyone else beating them back. I hear the basketball blog was just as bad. Iona is less than 1% of the football programs in this area, but they represent 1/3 of the topics on this blog. The entire public, private school debate is because of the Iona Fans always putting public school fans on defense. Some people want seperate blogs because the CHSFL fans just won’t let it go, and people are just tired of it.

  59. Husky 92

Football giant. You call yourself football giant, Ha everything your said was negative. Who cares what you think. All my friends said , why are you blogging?? 90% of the people on here never played any sports in there entire life. Never played in a meaning game. Harrison 16-Rye8 90, and HHS 6 Rye0 91. They never struck out 16 people in a game for HHS. Why do you bother. I tell them I love High school football and I support Section 1 to the dome. I have been since 98. Most of you take things personal, and Im joking most of the time or with friends on here. There is no more trash talking. Its like Im talking to the Harrison and Rye AD on here and r trying to ruin everything. Lets see, Football giant you dished it on me, and now Im giving it back. Go cry to Kevin.

  60. Behindthebench

As I’ve said before these blogs fuel emotions that are already at a high level. The hatred and accusations coming from these bloggers are because they can all hide behind their computer screens. The results of their actions fuel already volatile situations.
They are free to criticize coaches, players and fans without consequence.
These blogs need to stop, because people unfortunately wont listen to your warnings.

  61. obsessive

    Thanks Kevin Well said!

I was one of the first to comment and critizise Coach DeMatteo for what I percieve as him allowing his teams to run -up scores against defensless opponants. I stand by those remarks. This does not mean children that I think Coach is a “scumbag” an Ass*&^% or whatever other name you come up with.
Look he’s great coach, he’s not GOD, he’s a person just like everyone else who makes mistakes and is certainly not perfect! As a head coach and a prominant one he’s going to have his critics, and his behavior needs to be beyond the pale. He can’t give even the hint that he’s humiliating opponants, or else the jealous haters will be picking at his bones should he fail….and that’s exactly what has happened!

  62. football giant

Husky 92 why am I not suprised that you didn’t get it??? Unlike scary and Just a Fact it went over your head. I didn’t dish anything out. I compiled a list of blog topics over the past month.

  63. Sportsed

If every blogger had his/her name noted rather than a blogger name I don’t think this rambling would go on.

All of you don’t get it. Not at the expense of PO, Coach DeMatteo was defending his hard working players that have been talked about all season. He would never be disresepctful to another team. He would help the PO coaches and players if they asked. You just don’t know the man.

  64. chochy

he is not a rookie coach, he should of just said congrats to PK and move on

  65. XM

There shouldn’t be a blog for high school sports. Its is suppose to be fun. If a kid has a bad game he has to worry about being ripped on by some people who think they know football. When I played high school football I just loved playing with my friends. We didn’t have people who dont know what they are talking about how we played. We just played because we loved the game

  66. C'mon Now

According to the numbers provided by Mike Hoops – New Ro, Mount Vernon and White Plains all have more kids than Iona and Stepinac combined!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Some of those schools have a bigger CLASS size then ALL of Iona or Stepinac. I know that prob more than 50% of those students are girls, but still that is a huge disparity.

    NOW LET THE “DEBATE” BEGIN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy blogging and keep it clean fellas

  67. ManInTheStands

    Americans take notice!!!!
The THOUGHT POLICE are among us!!
Control this, limit that, identify the offenders….
Like someone said recently, the best way to start a democracy in Iraq is to give them Our Constitution. We aren’t using it anymore, might as well give it to someone who can.

  68. John Malone

I’ve always said the only way to fix this is to make people register. You don’t need to tell the blog who you are. But Kevin and the Journal News should know every single person on here. They should be able to ban your computer and your email address from posting.

EVERY SINGLE FORUM IN AMERICA HAS REGISTRATIONS.

  69. Big Fan

    FOOTBALL GIANT

Please accept my apology for misunderstanding you.

  70. Just a fact

The regular lohud.com blog has registration for those that might not know.

I think with registration, his hits would decline otherwise they would have made the move already.

Actually that would be very interesting stats. How many hits by year, Kev’s web site has received.

I think this year would take it by far. One just because of inveitable growth, by word of mouth. But this year he seems to have figured out if you throw multiple blogs out per day(interesting of course) it keeps people coming back. I have only read these blogs for two years, but that is what I have noticed. I could be way off base. He could have had a similar style last year, and I just did not pick up on it.

  71. Bad Info

Just a Fact, apparently you also don’t read very well. check out Howdy’s comments above yours, it explains what happened.

  72. Gimme A Stick

Kevin the problems are a function of your success unfortunately. This is an interesting blog and its popularity has attracted all types. The solution would be to have a moderator to ban those that don’t handle themselves in a community appropriate fashion because that is actually what is being built here.

    Good luck with that.

  73. Just a fact

    Bad info,

Though howdy and my last e-mail are similar, they are different. What am I missing? What did I state above conflicts with Howdy’s?

Who has the reading comphrehension problem????????

  74. NyackFan

Scary says on October 26th, 2009 at 6:54 pm
“Kevin, you do alot for Westchester Football”

I guess Rockland County does not exist.

  75. NyackFan

    10960 says,
“The other day I didn’t want to blog. A very interesting weekend of football happened and we were in a full blown topic of sociological issues and demographics. You kiddin me”

Maybe there are people on this blog who have different interests than you? Should only talk about what interests you?

  76. football giant

Nyack Fan 10960 can defend himself, but aren’t we on a football blog? Isn’t the topic football? How about you man up and just admit your comments the other day were out of line? No need to create lead ins for it again.

  77. sec 1 strikes again

    football giant = mental midget

  78. NyackFan

    football giant,
OK. I man up. I never intended to upset and characterize in the way things were taken. I should have chosen more wise ways of saying what I said, rather than resorting to deliberately provocative language to make a point, that got lost in the responses. I also realized, after the fact, that there is little room for social commentary on this blog, though I believe (and from my impressions since the beginning of summer, anyways) that many of us see football as a reflection of society and gives opportunities for reflection on our broader communities.

In this milieu, the business of professional sports has lost its connection with the local community and why I love HS football and visiting everyone’s towns on during the football season because of it. Without Section One football, my Nyack fan compatriots (and our dedicated pep band!), and the bloggers here who keep it charged up with what’s coming up next week and what just happened, I likely would never have visited some of the communities and seen some of the unique treasures. For example, in Rye there is that GREAT deli right near the school, and the cool guy at the counter who opened his clean meatslicer to make me a post-game sandwich. I went there because of the G flag he flies proudly. Whatever people think of my commentary, there are many good people in Rye.

Whoops. I got off on social commentary again. lol. Honestly, I trust my fellow bloggers forgive me. I’ll try to stick to football. :/

  79. football giant

Well done and respect earned. As a fellow Nyack Fan, I didn’t like the light that was being cast on us.

  80. scary

    NyackFan

Yes, you are correct, I was asserting that there is no Rockland County.

  81. 10960

    Nyack Fan,

    Good Post!

  82. enough NyackFan

    NyackFan,

I am impressed as well, thanks for that post. I am now going to change my name to something better ;)

  83. garnet10580

    Nyack Fan:

Love those Rye G flags and G tents!

It’s called Jerry’s Post Road Market and has been a Rye fixture since the 1940s. The current owner is Jeremiah (Jerry) McGuire, Jr. having taken over the business years ago from his parents – Jeremiah, Sr. and Marie.
I can remember in 4th grade riding my bicycle there to buy lunch before heading over to Rye Recreation as a Summer Day Camp counselor. Here’s the clincher – back then ham on a roll was 35 cents and roast beef the same way cost 50 cents.

Kevin D: I have suggested you stop there when in Rye for a game – how about I meet you there this Friday night before the Poughkeepsie game?

  84. 10960

Oh thats what that was… a market? I seen the the “G” Flag as well…. That shows very good community support, I like that.

We used to have a Nyack sign located right off exit 10 in Nyack. Right after hitting the exit you would see “Welcome to Nyack, Home of the 2000, 2003 NYS football Champions!”

    Town pride is always nice.

  85. GarnetRoll

Nyack and Rye, two excellent towns with excellent football traditions!

  86. NyackFan

Thanks for the insider info garnet10580. Very interesting. I wonder what are other neighborhood eating joints for HS football? I know Hogan’s Nyack posts the games and has the scores on a white posterboard behind the cashier. Several of the Nyack team members go to Nanuet Diner after games.

  87. Just a fact

I am sure this is no shock to most that know New Ro, but The Beechmont near the corner of North Ave. and Easthester Rd., good food, GREAT WINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!

  88. mrvolo

football giant, many chsfl and basketball players are recruited by more than one school and then they choose the one that best fits.yes i am an old fan and agree with your comments.
