Land of the Upsets

October
23

We had three of the biggest surprises of the season in tonight’s Section 1 Class A tournament as Roosevelt, Lakeland and Poughkeepsie all won their opening-round games.

Roosevelt stormed past Ossining 41-20. Poughkeepsie came back to defeat previously-unbeaten Somers, 14-10. And Lakeland, well, I don’t know what to call Lakeland’s 24-0 win over Fox Lane. Shocking isn’t even the word.

And the only non-upset was Rye over Nyack, and that was stunning because of how dominant the Garnets were in the 34-7 victory. So it’s Poughkeepsie at Rye in the semifinals and Lakeland against Roosevelt (since Lakeland and Roosevelt are both No. 2 seeds and had no common opponent, they’ll flip a coin to determine the site).

White Plains technically won in an upset tonight, defeating fourth-seeded Suffern on the road, 27-14.

Also just received word that Arlington came back from a nine-point deficit with 4:50 to play to defeat Carmel 31-27 in a AA quarterfinal.

Full scoreboard from tonight:

Friday’s results

PK @ Somers and Rye in back to back weeks, that seems hardly fair :(

  2. are you crayz!!!!!!!!

truly the land of the unforgiving!!!!!

  3. Goldberg

did roosevelt and lakeland both only have one league loss each?

  4. Eagle Power

To everyone that said eastchester choked against 4-1 Roosevelt last week. eat your words The south leauge is clearly dominant. I guess the cupcake schedules really didn’t help somers, ossining, and nyack. LOL. Eastchester played three of the four semi finalists and were 2-1 against them. Clearly the toughest scheudle in class A. Remember their one loss was without thier superstar.

Games of the week next week: Nyack at Somers and Fox Lane vs ossining. Wow. Go roosevelt and Rye represent

  5. Husky 92 spit in the ca ca cooler

Eagle Power, im right there with you man. Go Class A South.. Can it be a Class A south finals. Maybe!! Who did Lakeland lose too, Somers?? Lakeland seems to have alot of heart..

  6. Jax

tell this eastchester guy to shut the hell up. They never die, thos damn birds… but like i said Roosevelt would beat Ossining. As far as Nyack goes, I saw it coming. Even with Ray, I thought Rye was the better overall team

  7. Jax

It was a Class A west finals last year. So what are you trying to say? After eveyone called Ossining and Nyack’s league weak last year, they both made it to the chip. Don’t even start with that A south is that much superior to the other leagues

  8. MDALE

Just back from the Roosevelt game and Ossining was a joke. We didn’t even play a good game on offense and still put up 41 points. Roosevelt was very good on defense and Ossining made 2 crazy plays just to score. The interception that hit 3 players before falling into a Ossining players arms for 6 points and the 50 yard bomb (which for #4 the QB for Ossining was an AWESOME play!) I was not impressed at all which shows that Rye and Roosevelt from the South are the 2 best teams.

Now I know Ossining fans you ” Gave that game away”!!! Whatever—-ROOSEVELT MAKES KEVIN LOOK STUPID AGAIN….HEY HUSKY AND EAGLE FANS HOW DO YOU LIKE MY INDIANS NOW….HAHAHAHA

  9. oldnintheway

    Kevin:

Why do you insist that the Rye/Nyack game was so surprising? With or without Nichols, it was a physical mismatch. Tonight proved in no uncertain terms that A South is the best league in a very competitive class. Great matchup with Poughkeepsie and Rye next week.

  10. curious

seriously does Eastchester is a bunch of whining babies. Never have I ever seen anything like this. WAAAAAAAa my division was too tough, WAAAAA it was raining that’s why Harrison beatus. WAAAAAAAAA my team chocked again so I am not going to the palyoffs. BEAT IT!

  11. The Crusade

Way to take care of Hayes and keep the Dubois Trophy where it belongs! Maybe now people will stop criticizing Stepinac’s schedule.

  12. HSFB Guy

The Crusade I totally agree with you..

Hopefully this game will show everyone that Stepinac is for real.

Curious, what happened to your team? lol!

  15. Just a fact

MDale when you beat Rye, the Blog is yours.

For tonight, to the Victor goes the Spoils!!!!!!!!!

  16. obsessive

Below is a comment I made earlier today which I got a lot of flack for….all I have to say is POK 14 Somers 10 and I will rest my case!

I’d like to comment on Somers. Coach DeMatteo is one of the best (some could argue the best) coaches around. I don’t understand, however, why he consistantly feels the need to run -up scores against inferior, or beaten down opponants?!? I think this severly reduces him in my eyes and is ironically often counter productive!

A prime example of this was last year’s Quarterfinal against POK (62-12!!) ABSOLUTELY NO NEED FOR THAT, COACH!!) Like I said it’s often counter productive as shown by what happened the following week. They (Somers) ran into a team that wasn’t going to be intimidated by their blow-outs. Somers got into a tough game, and all of a sudden things wern’t easy or going their way, and they literally fell apart, fumbling all over the place and getting their backsides handed to them by Nyack (good for them ) 30-7!

I don’t want to hear the “excuses” either, I’ve heard them all! There is NEVER an excuse to embarrass or humiliate opposing atheletes or coaches. Dino Garr Of Rye , who’s had much greater success, has NEVER HAD HIS TEAM SCORE MORE THEN 50 POINTS in his long career! Does that tell you something! Hope your listening Coach!

I guss you can tell from my post that I sure will be rooting for POK to aveng last years embarrassment (Somers and Coach should be the one’s embarrassed

This just a pure disgrace. I understand losing, but…...
    OUCH!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Nic Nac

    yesssss step, great victory

  19. sunshine

step is going all the way…. big win against hayes…i believe it will be on msg tomorrow

  20. Keith

The Arlington Admiral come back kids did it again defeating Carmel tonight! It was an awesome game! Gottta give those Arlington kids a lot of credit! Even when the chips were down, Sam Loussedes and his team pulled off another great victory! Great coaching too. Never give up! It’s inspirational to see how far the Arlington football program has come in the last 3 years! They are now 6 and1. And that’s no joke!

  21. MDALE

    Just a Fact-

Never said anything about Rye or even being better than Rye. I just feel bad for people on this blog who have never seen Roosevelt and just assume that they are better. Ossining people said we couldnt stop them, before that it was Eastchester and Harrison. They need to realize that Roosevelt is the second best team out there!!! I am praying for a Rye vs Roosevelt game! It will be different this time I promise! But first we must take care of Lakeland….LETS GO ROOSE!!!!!

  22. s10580

Kevin’s pre-season prediction of Rye winning the Section 1A title with one loss looks prophetic. Will Rye win its 7th straight Section 1 title? Next Friday(?) night’s game vs. Poughkeepsie should be a great one. The Pioneers have come back with a vengence after two early losses, while the Garnets have gone into overdrive since their loss to Eastchester. Can’t wait. Go Garnets!

  23. 10960

Too tired to go into detail tonight.

Just know that not only is Rye disciplined but they are big. Nyack looked like a JV team compared to Ryes size.

Now Im just throwing numbers to show example….. If the average height of Rye players are 5ft10…. Nyacks was 5ft5. Rye is the best team I seen this year.

How the hell did Eastchester beat these guys!!!

I still stand by my statement that although cole McCormack is good…. because he is in fact good…... but not that good. The open runs should have gone to the house and McCormack had a few of those thanks to the overwhelming offensive line.

Rye is the truth and they would have beaten anyone tonight.

  24. green valley 1985

Poughkepsie will win the section for A…they are a dangerous fast team. Besides eastchester’s league the second best league is the north. The north has 3 great teams in it. Poughkepsie, fox lane, and greeley. Greeley almost made the playoffs but lost to fox lane in a heart breaker. But greeley also smashed lakeland, who just shut out fox lane. Fox lane is one dimensional with a great passing attack. Poughkepsie is straight nasty…they will win the section.

  25. NyackFan

All cudos to the powerful, big, steak, veggie, and potato fed combined with fitness and workout gyms in your mansions watching the ESPN flat screens, OLines and DLines of Rye.(Unlike some of our boys who grow up on Kennedy Fried Chicken and work out down at the Y but that’s not an excuse) They are what makes your team IMO. Well coached and well fed and well trained . onldintheway is right about this. Cass had an interesting game plan, but the line play was the clear difference.

A few good rifle shots from Eck to keep our weak secondary honest, and then just keep hitting us in the heart with the run. The game was not close once we lost our steam with a few questionable calls, but Jax that would have made no difference tonight, I’m afraid.

McCormack with his red hair reminds me of guys I played rugby with in high school. Runs speed-power like one, and looks like a member of the All Blacks or Wales International when walking off the field. Cool!

This was my first time out at Rye HS and from what I saw this is pretty much a private high school dressed up as a well-funded public. This is not Nyack, and NOTHING like Spring Valley. The neighborhood is a “million miles” across the river from the apartment flats of Nyack where many of our boys grow up against the odds. The Rye High Achiever boys have more advantages that go beyond many of us on the west side of the river (along with O, I think) including their well funded football program. We, along with Cass, do the best with what we have. Shouldn’t Rye really be playing with Iona and the others pseudo-publics over there?

Does Iona go suck out all the players from the less endowed Port Chester nearby that we played? Or is PC not as good a school?

The most disappointing thing for me tonight was that dumb half time tailgate party across the road from the stadium with the “mature” adult fans drinking up a storm under the G tent and out of the back of their SUVs. Several of you parents were nicely sauced up in time for the third quarter. Nice the way some “hid the wine and beer” in coffee cups in the stands. We smelt your breath. What a great example for the rest of the Rye high school kids in the stands and the young ones playing over on the grass. Drink at half-time and then drive home with your kids in the backseat of the SUV. WOW! And the Rye police just stands there. In all the other schools I’ve been at with our team there has been nothing like that. It’s a shame that the school or the town officials tolerate that behavior, but from what I understand it’s “officially off of school property”. Nice.

  26. Spectator

couple surprises. The fact that lakeland dominated fox lane was a surprise although the victory itself wasnt too surprising. Hats off to them. Somers game was supposed to be close so the fact that they lost wasnt too surprising.

The real “shocker” was Stepanic’s domination of Cardinal hayes. #1 team in area? I think so.

  27. Garnet Family

    Fan.
You had it working when you were talking football x and o’s. Then you lost your mark. Rye is what it is and thanks to our community and football association we do enjoy some additional funding, again a reflection to our community. Rye is a giving community and has a long history of helping our neighbors. We don’t have to apologize for our hard working families that support our schools and kids., We work hard and pay loads of school taxes for what we have. The tailgate event is not or has it ever been out of control. The crowds under the G tent are made up of family, friends and even grandparents who come and support the kids win or lose not get fall down drunk and drive away in SUV’s. Please don’t cast such random and stupid comments. You need to get a grip and perhaps work in your own community in developing the long term support for your kids and sports programs in Nyack. No doubt other Rye fans and others who have enjoyed our local traditions will speak for them self. Hope you enjoyed your ride back over the bridge, See ya at the Palisade Mall where we will spend our hard earned dollars to pay your sales tax, used to support Rockland County and poor old Nyack.

  28. Football 09

    Nyackfan,

How does Rye being a wealthy town have anything to do with them whipping your boys in football. If anything, the stereotype is that the more “Ghetto” or “Downtrodden” town produces better athletes, obviously implicating race. What you said about Rye is just as bad as someone on the blog saying how good your athletes are because some of them may be black.

  29. EAST PESTER

HOW MANY PLAYOFF GAMES HAS EASTCHESTER WON SINCE MOVING TO CLASS A?

  30. slacrosse

    Nyackfan,

You’re an embarrassment to the hard-working players, coaches and great community of Nyack!!

  31. 10960

Lets not get into Race and class here guys.

Look at Yonkers Roosevelt….. Nyack is nowhere near as poverty stricken….. infact if you do your research, Nyack is a pretty well off town…. one of the only towns in Rockland with million dollar homes.

You want to know why Rye dominated Nyack?

look at the rosters….. for rye you see 6 foot here 6 foot there… 200 plus here 200 plus there

For nyack you have as low as 5 foot 5 inches…. 5 foot 7….5 foot 10 and a rare 6 foot here…. 155 here 165 there its a size disadvantage big time.

    Rye 25 experienced championship Seniors

Nyack 17 seniors who were on the bench due to the prior 22 that graduated.

If you look at the numbers….. Nyack didnt have a chance.

  32. EAST PESTER

    NYACKFAN,

WHAT’S WRONG WITH A BUNCH OF RICH GUYS IN LOAFERS WITH NO SOCKS HAVING A FEW MARTINIES AND COMPLAINING ABOUT THEIR LOSES IN THE STOCK MARKET.

HAS ANYONE COME UP WITH THE ANSWER AS TO HOW MANY PLAYOFF GAMES EASTCHESTER HAS WON?

  33. 10960

talk about last laugh…..... look at all the heavyweights that are out and behold!!! Lakeland is playing for a trip to the section championship!!! LOL

  34. NyackFan

    Garnet Family,

“Random and stupid comments?” I was there and saw you! So answer me clearly then….

Since when is drinking and driving with kids in the car an OK thing to do on “family night out”?

While you attack me for “randomness” as if I don’t know what I’m talking about.

I was enjoying myself among your fans since I’d heard you all talk so big on the blog and wanted to see what all the fuss was about. There were lotsa good folks and the pep band was fun, and frankly, I like the G flag. You DO have a great association and excellent school spirit!

But the tailgate thing is a slap in the face against the law and as much as y’all enjoy yourselves you’ve lost perspective IMO. There were several there who would not pass the breath test from my judgment. So, who drove away the SUVs then? You’re not wanting to admit the truth. I watched some of you walk from the stands, happy go-lucky impairment, breath and all, right to the driver’s seats. WOW. I guess laws don’t apply to the Rye people and police in the same way they do over here. And it’s sneaky how you are “off school property” in order to handcuff the school board ‘cause it’s your “private event” yet the BIG G representing the school is as clear as the Friday night lights can make it.

I think it’s an awful signal at a high school game but maybe your social rules are different. What’s it gonna take to overcome the we’re “not hurting anyone”? Another Taconic wrong way event following a G game with some of the young alumni modeling their parent’s and grandparent’s behavior? To say Rye “is what it is” is no excuse for breaking the law at worst, sending poor signals to your youth in the stands at the least. Enough preaching. I made my point and stick by it whether you like it or not.

As far as Nyack being anything like Rye, 10960 (my fellow compatriot who we live in the same ‘hood so my “research” is plenty accurate), there is no downtown flats or Central Nyack in Rye. And if you read carefully, I suggested that Nyack is not the worst, SV is (maybe even Haverstraw as one of the NRock feeder systems), and OF COURSE NewRoch, Roos, and Yonkers and other “ghettos” et al are worse… My point is that Rye is not a real public school that plays on the same field as the rest of us over here. They have more tax money to burn than any of the rest of us, among other things. We also just as work hard but not with the advantages. Coach Cass is the best at working with what we have.

Of course they have a bigger roster. And some nice players. I agree with you that McCormack is good, and great in tandem with the line play…I think he seems like a really cool kid. Did I not say that? Geezzz.

And I’m embarrassing Nyack for calling it like it is? (I also critique my own team) I guess I should just be nice on the blog. OK then. Party on everybody! :)

  35. MDALE

And you guys call me a moron!!! Nyackfan is a loser! When Nyack has it as bad as some of these Roosevelt kids have it then come on here with that garbage…Roosevelt gets it done on the field no matter how bad they have it. Rye beat you up so suck it up and good luck next year.

  36. NyackFan

    MDALE,
You’re not getting it either. I’m not upset about the loss and finding some football thing to rant about. We got beat fair and square by a good team. Did I not admit that? Get off it.

  37. NyackFan

And notice, I also mentioned Roos for Roosevelt? You couldn’t figure that out?

  38. EAST PESTER

RYE 7 POK 0 – GAME IS SUSPENDED IN FIRST QUARTER WHEN HUSKY 92 RUNS AFTER THE RYE KID, WITH THE FLAG, TO APOLOGISE AND RUNS INTO THE REFEREE, THAT JAX HAS BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT, INJURING HIM. THE AMBULANCE WHEN LEAVING THE STADIUM,WITH THE REF., IS HIT BY AN SUV DRIVEN BY THE ONLY SOBER PERSON AT THE RYE COCKTAIL PARTY, THIS BECAUSE NYACKFAN WAS SCREAMING AT HER NOT TO DRINK AND DRIVE AND COMPLAINING WHY SHE HAD SO MANY DIAMONDS. THANK GOD A GROUP OF EASTCHESTER PLAYERS WERE NARROWLY MISSED BY THE OUT OF CONTROL AMBULANCE INCREASING THEIR CHANCES OF MAKING THE PLAYOFFS NEXT YEAR. WHILE ALL THIS IS GOING ON MDALE IS SEEN HEADED TOWARDS THE RYE LOCKER ROOM.
MEANWHILE KEVIN,AFTER ANOTHER IONA LOSS RANKS IONA #3.COULD KEVIN BE SPENDING TOO MUCH TIME AT THE RYE COCKTAIL PARTY? I’VE SEEN HIM WITH LOAFERS AND NO SOCKS.

yo, i have heard many excuses from fans when a team loses, but nyack fan, that was just SAD! come on man, im not even from rye, and you makin it out like they are a private school. i have 3 cousins (hispanic for what its worth) that liive in rye and are not in no mansion, they blue collar . dont go blaming rye being better at them having more advantages?? COME ON MAN! for real????
take your beating like a man, im sure cass wldnt agree with what u said, that was a pathetic rant and ive heard alot. things aint always what they seem, rye has a dominant team. i like the POK team too (got another cousin lives there too) and we aint going to be talkin bout who has more tax dollars to make their team or tailgagtes better? WTF?@! absurd bro, get a grip. i never read such a bad excuse for a loss and to say mccormack was cool with red hair like an old rugby friend of yours? get a grip homie! and u were smellin parents breaths? i wish i could meet you. u wayyyyy off base. lookin forward to POK rye. any early predcitions 10960? 10960 tells it like it is, classy blogger im sure he didnt like your doodoo post. still shakin my head at u.

  42. stylez

nyackfan—u want to be pointin fingers talk about setting bad example for kids, they lose a football game and they see u pointin out the winners “advantages”. these are both PUBLIC schools, tax dollars or not. u need talent, players, coaching and HARD WORK to win a game. u settin the bad example. there are LOTZ of people with more money than me, but u dont hear me talkin bout that or criticizing—good for them. and my cousins that live in rye love it there, everytime ive been for a game, softball game etc, i love it there, good people. (i live in port chester) and we friends with a lot of the rye peeople and kids play ball together in the midget leagues. so take ur comments somewhere else and stop embarrasing a good town like nyack. follow 10960 and learn from him u loser.

  43. styles

Just goes to prove, Rye builds up there season every year to peak for the playoffs. When you play Rye come this time of year you can throw the whole regular season out, this is a different team. Dino gets them ready to play for the playoffs each week throughout the regular season. One goal is in mind at Rye and thats state championship. Watch as this team gets better every week from here on out and they make a run to the dome. The streak ending is the best thing to happen to this program. This is what they play for, that loss means nothing now because this team would beat anyone in the Section from this week forward.

  44. Just a fact

It is tough not to bring up race when you see comments you believe are purely based on race. No one wants to give it to Rye that they had better athletes tonight. And the continuing comments of how McCormack is good but… is just plain ridiculous. I will say this again, if McCormack was non white on a team like Nyack, no blogger on here would post Qualified(back handed) compliments. The kid is a very good football player. He is not Ray, Sammy or Matt, but again few are. I do not know what his stats were for tonight, but in other big games this year, he has played GREAT. Give the kid his due respect.

10960, not picking on just your comments, because on different blog others were spewing the same BS.

I agree, Rye had a lot of size. But size did not catch or throw those passes. Size did not read blocks, make people miss and out run would be tacklers. That was PURE TALENT! If you are unwilling to give Rye its props and use the “A” word(athleticism), there is no denying that Rye had the BETTER FOOTBALL PLAYERS, by far tonight. And I for one will take FOOTBALL PLAYERS over athletes any day.

Congrats to the Garnets, they looked formidable tonight.

  45. Just a fact

    10960,

Driving through Nyack many times, I think the area overall might not be considered below the poverty line, probably far from it. But we both know there is no denying there are some bad neighborhoods there. And like most parts of Westchester and Rockland, the neighborhoods in Nyack are polarized.

    Agree?

  46. Just a fact

My last post is just a demographic of Nyack. Was not intended to support anyones arguments above.

  47. Sore Loser

    Nyack Fan,

Really?? Hate to break it to you but you guys didnt lose this game by a slim margin….I dont care how cushy the Rye players lifestyle and workout facility is…the game is played on the field, not in some 2000 sqft finished basement in Rye…Not for nothing, but your boys grew up in a tough environment….terrific….then i bet they are tough kids….that certainly doesnt diminish their ability to win football games, it actually enhances it…..you are just a sore loser looking for every possible excuse for losing rather than give credit where credit is due…...If your theory is correct, why isnt Horace Greeley hoisting up the State Title every year????? How about Scarsdale??? Rye has built a PROGRAM that you are clearly envious of and the credit should be given to the people that deserve it….Coach Garr and the generations of kids that have contributed to Rye’s success…...i can remember a time in which Rye was terrible and Nyack was a perrenial powerhouse…Rye worked their tail off to be where they are today….cant take it away from those kids no matter how much you whine….....

P.S: not only am i not from Rye, but i am from a school that was notorious for losing for decades….rather than throw rocks at the throne, i admire Rye for what they have built and been able to accomplish…..

  48. Lion

Wherever it’ is, if adults were concealing liquor in the stand than that is wrong. Off site tailgating and liquor is very questionable.

Sorry guys, highschool age binge drinking is a serious problem. This age group of kids goes to rather ingenius lengths to drink and conceal there drinking. With halloween coming up, I’ve seen kids passed on neigborhood lawns and taken to hospitals. I see water bottles in the student section of HS football games and you know what to suspect.

This should be a different discussion than Rye’s ststus as a neighborhood. That does not matter. They have a great football program, and get community support. This is no differen than with the great Nyack, North Rockland, New Rochelle teams of the last 15 year. No different.

  49. On Iona!

Congrats to Connor, Jack, Cole and all you guys on the Rye team. Nyack put the challenge to you early and you responded like champions. I spent part of the game on the Nyack side and thought the players, cheerleaders and fans created a great atmosphere for their team and represented Nyack with class. It’s too bad these blogs become outlets for angry people like Nyack Fan. His 300 + word rambling tirades are a waste of space. This blog loses it’s audience when contributors fail to treat their views with civility. Keep it going Rye!

  50. oldnintheway

Interesting week shapes up in A next week. If Poughkeepsie can hold Somers to 10 points (regardless of schedule strength, they are still a very powerful offensive team) they at least have a shot against Rye. I think the frustrating nature of their two losses against very good Eastchester and Fox Lane squads are making them focus that much more. They could easily be undefeated. Like many, I don’t know much about Lakeland; have they improved that much in 3 weeks? Sight unseen I’d have to pick Roosevelt.

To MDALE: I’m a Harrison poster and I never thought this year’s team was bound for glory. Roosevelt had a good win against them, and has the better team. The Huskies are definitely heading in the right direction for next year. The question I have about Roosevelt is how will their 20-man roster hold up over the next several weeks? I wish them luck…they are certainly an exciting team to watch, and I have to believe if Rye beats PO, they will be concerned about facing them again.

  51. 10960

    Lets Just clarify things.

I for one would take football players over athletes as well and at Rye you get both. These guys are athletes are you kidding me. They’re athlete and they’re good one with size too.

Back to Cole McCormack…... He’s good but not as good as everyone hypes him up to be. Trust me I’ve seen real good. McCormack has great blocks every run. He gets his 5, 6, 7 and occasional 20 yard runs because of his blockers.

I’ve seen ball carriers break loose, and its over. Doesn’t happen with McCormack, He doesn’t run hard enough nor fast enough to be over hyped but he has great vision. He’s an intelligent ball carrier that takes advantage of a excellent offensive line.

McCormack is a pure athlete and football player with good instincts and field intelligence. He’s Very good but not as good as many make him out to be, his line deserves much credit.

Emmitt Smith was as great as his line and is an all time leading rusher but he’s no Barry Sanders!!! Get it?

As for Nyack, You guys are painting Nyack the wrong way. I’m offended. We have 1 little block downtown that happens to be on the lower side and suddenly Nyack is a town in crisis. First and foremost, many kids from that area dont have the grades to put on a helmet….if they even attend high school and secondly, there’s not that much of them because like I said, its one little small block downtown.

Just because Nyack has black football players, that doesn’t mean they’re from the downtown plaza. Many of their parents pay mortgages like any other typical middle class family.

I’m done with this topic…..please keep it about football. Dont makes us look inferior, we take great pride in Nyack and the legacy that great teams of the past have left at McCalman Field.

10960 you should be embarrassed as ALL supporters should be embarrassed. Nyackfan you are a disgrace and rants are uncalled for and offensive. What is sad is you make it seem like all Rye residents were handed their lives and didn’t earn them. You or any Nyack fan doesn’t know them so why assume? You just make us look like jealous underachievers. Seriously your comments are sickening.

  53. 10960

Without the officials…... Rye dominates anyway. Let me make this clear.

But the officials were scum bags all night. They gave Rye a 20 plus yard pass that was clearly incomplete. I don’t care about the multiple face mask calls they missed because i’m used to crap like that….. but ruling that pass complete was a smack in the face.

The Rye players were returning to the original line of scrimmage, knowing the pass was incomplete then they had to return to the spot of the ball. You cant blame them for taking that. Cass was livid!!!

Didn’t matter though as Rye demonstrated that they would have moved the ball on us anyway but I still cant stand the officiating crew.

When McCormack came barreling through the Nyack sideline, over the gatorade bench, The nyack players helped him up and was patting him on the shoulder… good sportsmanship. Then one of the officials come running through the sideline to his rescue as if he was in danger and escorts him back on the field.

I couldn’t stand those guys last night.

  54. 10960

    football Giant,

    I am embarrassed…... trust me.

  55. Just a fact

There are other area’s of Nyack that are bad as well. Get off the first exit going North bound 87 after the bridge. Head up 9w towards 59. If you make a left before going over the over pass and take that road, you end up behind the McD’s on 59. Several low rise apartments there and RUN DOWN, YES RUN DOWN HOUSES.

Again, I am just posting this for demographic purposes, but we should be more transparent when talking about the Facts.
Teh problem, I do not want people using the facts to support race arguments. My last post about this.

  56. jim

    Nyack Fan

I bought a nice London Broil the other day (about a pound and a half) that fed three people very nicely for $5.27….comparing the beef with the price of a three piece meal…the steak dinner was much cheaper. Who’s living high on the hog?

When you assume that everyone in Rye is rich does that mean everyone in Nyack is poor? Idiotic logic.

The next time you are in Rye, head north on Route #1, bear left at the second light onto Purchase Street and make your first left onto Locust Avenue. The second building on the left is the YMCA. You will be amazed, if you go inside, to find so many kids working out wearing “Rye Garnets” shirts, gym shorts and the like. I’m not just talking football players either. All the rich kids hang out at the Y.

The tailgaiting across the street is traditional. I have never seen anyone “drunk”. Not everyone at the tailgate drinks. Some have “A” beer or “A” glass of wine. I’m sure just as many people stop at a local watering hole in Nyack before a Friday night game. I’m sure nobody from Nyack ever tailgated at Giant’s Stadium or West Point ,because of course, no one can afford tickets due to the poverty all of you experience, but tailgatting does exist. If someone at the tailgate attempts to drive their SUV with the kiddies in it, I would hope someone would stop them. I will gladly volunteer the services of either my 1992 Camry or my 1995 Corolla (depending on which one is in the shop)to provide safe rides.

I find it totally amusing that an amateur sociologist like yourself could generalize so often and be so far off base. I respect your opinion about the liquor and tailgaiting (even though I think you have painted a distorted picture of it and I disagree), but at least that opinion was based on your unsuccessful little trip here last night. My problem with your idiotic post is your Walter Wallstreet beating up on poor Basketball Jones rap. You obviously lack the knowledge of the Rye schools or community to comment on them. Why not just stick to football? Obviously some of your surpressed hostilities are coming out when the subject gets too complicated.

  57. The Donald

I’m not going to get in to this whole race thing. We are not talking poor communities by any streach of the imagination. But, I will say, having money brings opportuities. This is not about Rye either. Let me explain. Having money allows kids to attened camps, have flexability about working or not during summer, allowing them too attend voluntary evening workouts. Things of that nature. Not a knock on anybody. Just a fact. I won’t even attempt to go into the social and economic up bringing and the opportunities that brings both in and out of the class room. No, Rye people or Nyack people or anyone for that matter was not handed a road map to life. But, it makes the drive a little eaiser when your handed the key’s to a lexus rather then change for the bus. Have a great day.

  58. Just a fact

I think the trouble we keep running into when discussing McCormack can be seen in this statement made:

“He’s Very good but not as good as many make him out to be, his line deserves much credit.”

What the heck does that mean? Every RB needs a line to run behind. Ray Rice had guys that went D-1 that were blocking for him. He had a great high school QB, point being PLENTY of supporting staff. Look at Doug Hogue stats. He had no blocking, no supporting staff, therfore his stats were unimpressive.

I too played with some very talented RB’s, mostly black( not that it matters). Most of these guys did not have break away speed, but they had excellent football instincts. You get credit for being a football player based on instinct as well. Based on McCormack stats he is every bit as good as those guys if not better.

If you want to say the kid is very good but not great, I agree. I think you need break away speed to be great. Very few are on my list as GREAT. If that is is your point, than you need ot be more clear. “Good but not that good”, “very good but not as good as people are making him out ot be”, are plain ridiculous statements. And sound like something more than just football (race) is behind them.

  59. Gmen

Nyack fan is just a loser. Forget about him.

  60. jim

Incidently…11 Nyack players and 11 Rye players listed in the program at 200 lbs. or more.

  61. Just a fact

    The Donald,

for your arguments above, I think it helps more for a sport like baseball, maybe even basketball, going to camps and not having to work ect… than football. I think for poor and rich communities a like successful football programs seem to be the ones that have good youth programs, and very good high school coaching. When you have a break down in either, the over all program usually suffers in a community. New Ro always has had great youth programs, but when they did not have the right coaching in place at the HS level, the team did not have the same success that we have been accustom to having over the past decade.

Best part of your post above:

” No, Rye people or Nyack people or anyone for that matter was not handed a road map to life. But, it makes the drive a little eaiser when your handed the key’s to a lexus rather then change for the bus.”

Unfortunately, I got the keys to the bus as well. Trying to upgrade to the Yugo!!!!!!!!!!

  62. Just a fact

    Jim,

what is your honest/objective(if you can be) assessment of McCormack. Top 5 in the section? Top 10? Top 20?

  63. 10960

You guys are all unbelievable. I’m taking the day off the blog. “mostly black, not that it matters.” if it doesn’t matter dont mention it.

Race and money suddenly are popular on this blog. What a shame.

Anyway, congrats to the winners this week.

  64. NyackFan

“Amateur sociologist?” You have no idea who you are talking to, and I find it amusing how RyeFans are all finding ways to degrade true critique of what was actually seen. You may disagree with my interpretation, but I call it like I see it. And, yes, I’m sure there are a number of Rye kids at the Y, and it’s just a provocative way to make the same point about what The Donald more succinctly stated in understanding my point. We can be micro in Rye, or macro in looking at varsity football throughout America-especially if we get into the private vs public debate that lingers on this blog. To deny there are ture inequities that affect outcomes is dihonest. For anyone to attempt to deny this is dishonest as well.

Should we get started again about the Roosevelt story and how the Rye folks made sure that was exposed (according to Devaney)yet reverse critique is subjugated instead of being honest? Jim, I invite you to join the Rye police in attempting to monitor D & D. The watering hole commentary is ridiculous. Y’all were doing it under the G-tent out in the open in the name of the school not some bar a few blocks away where hopefully the bartender will monitor it.

  65. Just a fact

That is your response, hahahaha. Must have had you lost for words with the Facts.

Have two days off. When you come back you can state “Mc Cormack is very good football player”.

You see, nothing added afte those comments, let it be.

  66. Power House

so what if Rye kids have it made, thats all the more reason for them to be fat and lazy and guess what, they’re not so give credit where it’s due. Rye is good. I’m not going to say you Nyack guys because I see that its one crazed moron who cant take a loss without entering the subject of demographics and what do fans drinking at the game have to do with football? You sound like jim right now, complaining about fans.

Now you have credible bloggers losing interest because all of a sudden this blog has become more than football. First the Roosevlet incident that gets blown up on this blog now you have the subject of white and black kids. Whether or not a white kid can be as athletic as a black kid or when someone says a kid isn’t that good it automatically means that the statement was said because he’s white.

You have Kevin Devaney Jr. reporting the “News” on a blog spicing things up. Isn’t this a blog? We didn’t ask for the News, last time I checked there was a link for that on the lohud page under crime and public safety. Nobody expects to come on a football blog to discuss what the black kids at Roosevelt did in the Rye Locker room.

Or maybe you guys who crave the drama do want to see things like that. What has this blog become? I’m disgusted.

  67. Riverindian

    NyackFan,

When was the last time Scarsdale won a football title?

  68. Lion

Leave the socio-economic junk out of this. Rye has a great footbal program period. By all accounts they it’s comprised of great coaches, kids and families. Other affluent neighborhoods (New City, Scarsdale, etc.) do not have good programs.

I just can’t stomach any adult drinking at high school events. This is not the meadowlands or an Army west point game. For me, this touches close to home. I’ve seen unsupervised kids pass out in the stands drunk. It’s got to be zero-tolerance.

  69. Power House

    Just a fact
You support this subject matter like a fool. Your probably a stereotypical, judgemental, bitter guy yourself. Look at you finding reason to make Nyack look like a ghetto. What does the subject matter to you in the first place? You and Nyack fan need to get a room together.

Just a Fact and Nyack fan both cant see past class and demographics, They have to throw that in and now this is a blog on sociology rather than football. You guys are both rediculous.

  70. jim

To me football is a team game and the emphasis on individual statistics or who is better than who means nothing. I see McCormack run for 150-180 yds. or so every week. He looks pretty damn good to me. Top 10? Top 20? How am I supposed to know ? Last year the same questions were asked about Kyle Ramahlo. Last year I saw Dino plug that kid into the defensive tackle slot and use him more of a blocker than a ball carrier. Did that make him any less good? Ramahlo’s teams went 47-1 in High School. That is what I will remember about him. This year the leader of the pack for Rye is McCormack. His QB said in todays JN that his leadership is just as important as his ballcarrying. This is a kid that will be playing lacrosse at Cornell, the NCAA runner-up, next season. Does he have that 5th gear that a future D-1 running back has? Probably not, but my eyes haven’t seen anyone this year who has. McCormack’s teams have gone 41-2 since he has been in HS. Last year he rushed for over 1000 yards with only 9-10 carries per game. He is certainly in the conversation when talking about the top runners in the section and he would be the first one to tell you he has a great line in front of him. But with all due respect to all the other Rye players this year, this team is Cole McCormacks team. Rye fans will ALWAYS remember him as an all-time great Garnet, super kid, great leader and football star.

  71. anonymous

the score for the hen hud tappan zee game was 14-7 not 14-0

  72. Just a fact

    Power,

for a guy that proclaims to call it the way you see it, I think you would agree, when something gets said multiple times with out no football reason behind it, it makes you start looking for alterior motives. Though race and socio economics do not belong on a football blog, I am not afraid to go there if the situation calls fo it. If the comments about McCormack were said a few times, I would have let it go. But on a different blog, it got a little out of hand and people needed to be brought to task.

BTW, you crave drama, who you kidding????????

When you bring people to task, drama is created whether you like it or not.

As for Roosevelt, the people that came down hard on Roosevelt kids and wanted jail time, were crazy. However, it was definitely news worthy, and there needed to be repurcussions for the culprits. Yes you can still call kids culprits, unless you are from Nyack where that is too sensitive of a statement. When you care about kids, they need to have consequences for their actions, otherwise they never learn. But a slap on the hand like community service would do. For me anyway. Again, people wanted blood, but not me.

  73. Joe C

    NyackFan,
You are a disgrace. I grew up in Rye on High Street, where me and all my neighbors lived in multi family houses and it is not the picture you paint. I worked two sometimes three jobs every summer and continue to bust my tail as a mechanic and send my kids to Rye schools, because the schools are great, and the community is even better. Your team lost a football game and you want to turn it into a social lecture? Seems like you were more busy getting caught up watching the fans like a private invesitgator than actually watching what was a good high school playoff game. Your attitude is a shame and you are wrong saying what you said. Your blog stirred the pot for no reason and you immediately started it with sterotyping mocking and rants that were uncalled for. What exactly is an “ESPN flat screen” anyway tat we all have? I have the same 27 inch tube with tinfoil rabbit ears that have been rendered useless since I got digital converter box, i have always had, not that you care. Now didI have it tough? No. I have it it very good, and am thankful for my health and family and the town i live in. You my friend show jealousy and hatred. I really feel sorry for you and it is too bad that you couldn’t enjoy a good game. Maybe if Nyack won and you werent being such a sore loser, you would have talked about how Nugent was a great place to take in a game. You are degrading Nyack as a great town and great program by making it seem like you suffer from disadavantages. You don’t and I certainly don’t hear schools with winning teams that have it a million times worse than both of us using perceived social advantages or disadvantages as an excuse as to why they win or DONT win. I pray for you.

Look at your posts today. I expected good analysis and maybe I would still attack you and your posts in good fun but today you’re out of line.

Eastchester beat Rye based on line play. Rye could not push Eastchester around like they did everyone else.

I said in a post in August that Eastchester did not have enough depth. I was taken to the woodshed for that. I guess I should have said, quality depth. The two games they lost, they were up at half. They have great players, just not enough of them, As even the QB went two way.

Congrats to Rye and Roosevelt on their wins. I never would have thought Lakeland would beat Fox Lane. Good for them. PK won on pure talent.

  76. Lion

    Good analysis Jim.

I know in your little world you bring up race, you are a racist. I know you are real intelligent. Thanks for reminding me what a jack a$$ you really are.

Your reading comprehension is ridiculosuly low. Someone was putting out misinformation about the demographics of Nyack, WHO ARE FROM NYACK. But please point to any of my comments that are not FACT. Please, take your time, we know your slow…........ waiting…..waiting…

    Thought so!

  78. Lion

    On to football.

Nyack’s defense could not stop a good offense this year. You saw that all last night, and Rye was the best offense that Nyack played all year

I actually though that Nyack’s offense did a decent job in moving the ball last night. Especially given that Rye new it was run, run all night. Of course most of the drives sputtered out. That’s where Nichols would have made a difference. Some of those drives would have ben scores. That said, even with Ray, Rye wins last night by 2 touchdowns.

  79. The Nyack

Accept the fact that Rye is a football town…. Only good because they play with a passion….. Not because they have money thats rediculous. Maybe you guys need to take a trip to upper Nyack and look at the semi mansions up there….. even downtown Nyack has million dollar homes along the hudson….. Nyack has the second largest mall in the United states…... Nyack has it’s own college and fairly new constructed high and middle schools. There’s a lowest of the low everywhere. Nyack is by far not disadvantaged. The high school has solid test scores… The elementary school (upper Nyack) has a 5 star rating in great schools.com

Nyackfan….what the hell are you talking about…... Just a fact…. why don’t you keep your dialogue off my town please….. greatly appreciated.

  80. Riverindian

Rye’s winning has all to do with dedication. Here in Ossining the kids have the best fields in the section to play on. A great coaching staff and athletic dept. One of the best run booster clubs. The football program raises money so if a kid can’t afford a pair of cleats he’ll have them
or if they can’t afford football camp there’s money so they can attend. We have a fulltime athletic/fitness trainer on staff. With all of this for ALL kids in Ossining only the same 18 Ossining kids showed up to lift this summer. The jv almost didn’t field a team. Sorry NyackFan it’s not about money it’s about commitment from the kids,PARENTS up to the administration.

I know for fact that this was an untrue statement. I am not supppose to say something?

New Ro has plenty of bad neighborhoods. If a person came on and said only city park has a bad neighborhood I would be the first blogger on here to say something. I rather just stick with football, but I am not changing my style for no one. If people post things that are untrue, they need to be brought to task.

If I post something that is untrue, I would expect the same.

Give me your thoughts, and I am back to football, though I feel a big post coming from Power house.

  84. Shot Gun

To all my Rye players. Week in and out you guys play ball. Rairly do your here any of these boys talking smack. They practice, get good grages and play the game the way it should be played. No real stat leaders here. As any of you may or may not have seen, Rye ALWAYS gets introduced as a team for every game. They never anounce individuals. It’s not our way. We live and die as one. Any aricle that is written which has quotes from any of the players will have that played singing the praises of the whole team or of the O line or D. They never say I and never say Die. These boys and this program deserves respect. Thanks Rye for being you and to all you haters, growup.

  85. Rye

Jim how do you put a whole teams record solely on the soldiers of one player? He didnt do it all by himself and you putting that 41-2 record out there as if he did it by himself is not true. He is good but come on. His freshman year he didnt play at all, this is not a knock on him but the 2006 team was just unbelievable. In 2007 he didnt play up to his potential and Dino pulled him out of the Defensive starting line up. He got minimal carries his sophomore year as well, with Ramalho and O’malley getting the bulk of the carries. His Junior year was when he really shined, when all the attention was getting put on Ramalho’s ability to run the ball. Teams would stack the box expecting a ramalho plunge up the middle, but Dino was brilliant and called a sweep or stretch play to McCormack. Dont get me wrong he is an amazing player with a great track record, but please don’t be putting those stats out, like it’s tennis. he has been a intergral part to the wins, but not all of the reason. That is ridiculous Jim…

  86. jim

I never put the whole teams record on the shoulders of one player. Dino is a great coach. Moving a sophomore in and out of the starting line-up of a NYS championship team is part of the process that has led to the development of the player Cole has become. Not many sops have been the major star in the Rye galaxy over this unbelievable decade of excellence. Let me say that every Rye player who saw significant playing time their sophomore year over this run turned out to be pretty decent HS players as juniors and seniors… from Marc Saracino at the begining of the decade to McCormack, Rollins and Eck now, the track record has been very good. To actually get playing time as a freshman at Rye is extremely rare. Ramahlo and McCormack did. The last guy before them, I think, was Fabiano Pinto in the mid-1990’s. What I said was…at Rye INDIVIDUAL STATS MEAN NOTHING IT”S ABOUT THE WINS AND LOSSES…. NOT THAT THEY ARE 41-2 BECAUSE OF COLE MC CORMACK OR ANY OTHER PLAYER. I can’t believe that you read my post and you thought I said that.

Living in a “nice neighborhood” yet coming from a blue collared hard working family and still living off my paychecks I can be an example of not assuming everyone from a town or school is of the same. Its always the same people blogging about the same stuff. If not abut how a bandwagon team wins, a team that WAS good and being nostalgic, its about race and income-its quite sad. Parents and former players and fans arguing about stuff they have no control in-pitiful…..there’s over 40 teams in section I-not including the private preps or catholics. If you hate one team-cheer for another. If you have ties to one then cheer nonstop.

Being poor in rye and being rich in peekskill-for example-is the same idea. That idea is not to assume and stereotype. There was so much action friday night alone that the blogs should be about that….if you want to blog about income go to the economic section of the journal news….

  93. slacrosse

    tigga,

McCormack was recruited to play lacrosse at Cornell who played in the finals (vs Syracuse) of last yrs D1 championship. Although I assume he’d be a valuable addition to Cornell’s football team my guess is he’ll just stick with lacrosse.

We have had one of the greatest openning round of Class A playoffs in recent memory. What ae you tools doing? Having a major arguement about the relative impact of Socio-Economics on high school football in the Lower Hudson Valley. ENOUGH WITH THIS BLATTER.
Rye beat Nyack for the same reason they beat Roosevelt, a big powerful line. I think we all expected this. No surprises in this one.
Ossining-Roosevelt: I had not seen Teddy play before this game. Teddy has one of the best QBs in Class A(not the best player Kevin) and definitely the best back in Class A if not the section in Thomas. The kid was a beast all night.
Roosevelt was well coached and well disciplined tonight and can to play. They have several very good players and are the quickest team overall in Class A. Congrats Teddy.
Fox Lane-Lakeland: Who would have thunk it? Fox Lane is pretty one dimensional and a windy rainy night does not help their passing game. I don’t know about eating Crow but let me tell you the FROG’S LEGS were hard to swallow last night.
Somers-Po’Keepsie: Many predicted this one, I really wanted that upset. Somers always talks and acts like they are better than everyone in the North County. There bloggers are full of excuses again.
The paper said Tony was upset after the game. BOO HOO!!!!
Coach D has not won a big game in years. How dare I say this; Maybe, just maybe it is time for the ledgend to RETIRE!!!!! Oh the Humanity, how could you even thing such a thing.
Schedule Schmedule, year in and year out Somers is not prepared to win a big game, blame it on the schedule, blame it the game plan, blame it on lack of mental toughness, blame it on whatever, maybe it is time for a change.
Coach Cas given em little more next week please.
PS Poughkeepsie is always a very dangerous team. Are they big enough to handle Rye upfront? I don’t know, does anyone have any thoughts?
As for Lakeland, I never have any faith in the Frogs and after watching Roosevelt up close and personel last night, I don’t think the Frogs have a chance in hell of beating Teddy, especially if the game is on turf. The only team that can beat Roosevelt next week is themselves.

In closing, CAN ALL THE EASTCHESTER FANS PLEASE JUST GO AWAY!!! WIN A PLAYOFF GAME THEN TALK, SORRY YOU DIDN’T EVEN MAKE THE PLAYOFFS THIS YEAR. GOOD LUCK AGAINST THE OTHER NON PLAYOFF TEAMS AKA ALSO-RANS THE NEXT 2 WEEKS.

    Power,

alright my last post on this, since again you try to twist what I say.

Like I said before, go to all my prior posts above, and copy paste one thing that I have said above that is wrong. I do not need ten, five, just one. I ask you the question before and did not get an answer except some insults. And I have come to learn when you get to the insults, that means my argument is pretty good.

I did not say Nyack was poor, I said Nyack had more than ONE bad neighborhood. That is all. If someone said New Ro had just one bad neighborhood I would call them out too. Plenty of million dollar houses in Nyack and New Ro for that matter.

And just to add, you were the one that tried to mix my points above and intergrate them with what Nyack fan was saying. All my posts stayed clear of the socio econmoic BS and how it realtes to football. I was just puting out what I know to be true about Nyack neighborhoods. Call it enlightening the other bloggers that might not be familiar with Nyack.

But hey, there are quite a few Nyack fans on here so I know my comments are not gaining any brownie points.

To show how you like to twist things, here is my post at 3:44 am today:

“My last post is just a demographic of Nyack. Was not intended to support anyones arguments above”.

    That’s transparency!

  102. slacrosse

    Rye,

    Running back for sure.

  103. tigga

ya cornell lacrosse is not bad at all hahahahahahha. I wish him luck. I was pissed about that game, i wanted cornell to win…i hate Syracuse

  104. EAST PESTER AKA CRY SOME MORE

    EAGLE POWER,

YOUR RIGHT LIVE IN THE PRESENT EASTCHESTER STILL HASN’T MADE THE PLAYOFFS IN CLASS A.

  105. NyackFan

As of 2009, Nyack’s population is 3,431 people. Since 2000, it has had a population growth of 5.21 percent…..

    Power House,

You don’t know how to do social research either. Full town demographics never tell the story of micro-neighborhoods and micro-environments, and do not tell the story either of Nyack football players. The Nyack, a blanket statement about Waldron Terrace does NOT tell the complete story of Central Nyack or even of Waldron Terrace either.

Make no mistake I get it, and I know my own neighborhood that I live in every day not just “pop by” at 6PM every day. The renovated homes in Nyack do not reflect the full story, the million $$ homes on the mountain (of which most of the kids go to TZ anyways) do not, the small number of multi-million $$ waterftonts in West Nyack do not, the “median” or “average” home price for all of the area does not.

Similarly, my deliberate generalizing of Rye was simply to make a point about funding bases of schools and the advantages that a well funded program may have if they want to run a great football program.

BTW Thanks Just A Fact for making sure that you are right on “demographics” and that the rest of what I say is “B.S.” which it is not. Check to see how many public schools with inferior funding are nationally ranked. The national rankings are dominated by well funded public programs (many privates or what I term pseudo-privates as they are linked to significant non-public funding sources) or privates. My argument will bear itself out as more than B.S.

What I find most interesting is no one is talking about the main social issue I brought up that DID make me upset: Drinking by parents at or nearby high school sanctioned events. The sipping under the G-tent, “technically” does not make it a school event, but most certainly is not a proper ethic or signal. I saw the Rye police supervisor vehicle there. Was he in the crowd? That this illegal behavior under the unclear relationship with the school (G-tent) is sanctioned by the police (in non-prosecution)is a big Kahuna, but the Rye sippers (there were only about 100 of you compared to the 1500 or so other great fans). If one was to broaden this debate it may land square in the center of the college lacrosse frat behavior story at Duke U. a year ago. This is a TRUE NEWS ITEM. This is the main FOOTBALL RELATED ITEM that I was posting on, and if we can talk about football related stories here (which is what I have seen regularly), I thought that it was very much appropriate.

  106. NyackFan

    Power House,
Macro-demographics never tell the whole story.

  107. NyackFan

    The rest,
My main point was about the G-tent event. That is a very legit football story in light of recent blogging.

My sub-point was on funding of football programs not individuals. Check the nationally ranked H.S. teams and my point will not be B.S. It carries even further into college funding of football programs. There is a significant variance between some against the others if they want to invest in a program based on non-public based funding. It will also determine the success.

    I never spoke about race.

I never was upset about our loss. In honesty, Rye team was great and deserved what they got. Our boys were overwhelmed.

10960 (my postal code too) does not know everything about Nyack football and our town, as neither do I.

  108. Mister Fist

NyackFan – put your dictionary away, take a pill and next time you are driving back across the Tappan Zee Bridge, please…take a right.

  109. Glorious

    slacrosse and rye,

As far as Cole playing football, he’d be a good addition to a D3 program. He’d have to at least run under a 4.6 in order to be considered because of his size. Lately Cornell recruit BIG running backs (6’2”, 210 – 240lb) and if the back is small he is quick as hell as a change of pace. They slot those guys as well. He’ll do very well at Lax. Take it from someone who knows the IVY league very well.

  110. Just a fact

Nyack fan, I was not calling what you specifically said BS. You could have had some valid points, I did not read them. I mentioned I glossed over them. I called it BS in the sense it does not belong on the blog and you seemed to have riled up a couple of people. People who took exception to your comments were trying to lump my comments in with yours, and me and you had two seperate arguments going.

As for the drinking before and at games, having a few pops I do not see anything wrong. People just need to keep in mind it is HS football. Root for your teams/kids but stay in CONTROL. No one should get behind the wheel and drink and drive. Designate one person the DD like with any other situation.

Other than that tail gating is an American past time unto itslef. Love it! I can understand the non drinkers being upset, but drinking is legal, drinking and driving is not.

  111. garnet10580

East Pester – Your post at 2:48AM was clearly the best of this series. Thanks.

Sore Loser – I’m having trouble squaring up with your comment about Rye being “terrible” in the past since the Garnets have won 73% of all football games played since the 1920s. I’d be interested in hearing what years and records you might be referring to. Thanks.

  112. anotherryefan

I’m finally getting a chance to read all the blogs since last night – had to work all day – imagine that, a working class Rye resident! lol – and have to agree with garnet10580 that East Pester’s blog at 2:48 a.m. is THE BEST I’ve read in a long time!

The generalizations being bantered about are ridiculous but I, too, am disturbed by the example we are setting for our kids – it appears to them that a really good time HAS to include consumpution of alcohol….otherwise, why couldn’t we go to these events without it and still have a good time? As I said after the Roosevelt incident: kids are a product of their environment – something I think we need to keep in mind as well – I know I’ve been called more than once in the middle of the night to collect one of my under-aged drinking kids….fortunately they have been alive and well, just drunk…..I just pray I never get a worse call. Food for thought, my fellow Rye parents.

  113. anotherryefan

p.s. I am by no stretch of the imagination a tea todler(?)
but try to be cognizant to the appropriate time and place to down a cold frosty one. Let’s lead by example

  114. NyackFan

    Just a Fact,
Your position on the sipping in the stands may be fine to you. The problem is those same folks DID get behind the wheel and drive away. That would be D&D. And who is to say that everyone just had a quick one? Drinking may be legal, fine, but at a HS event? And yes it is “legal”, but what signal does it send to youth in the stands? That’s the ethical question. Drinking out of the backs of your SUVs? I don’t buy it.

Another thing that got to me is from every school we have visited in Sec. One, I have not yet seen an official/unofficial event like the G-tent event. (I am no expert in this area, so there may be some that I am unaware of). Certainly at Nyack we have no sipping party behind the BOCES building under the Indians logo. THAT is my point. That is a Section One High School FOOTBALL news story IMO.

  115. 10989

Hey all this talk about Nyack demographics…don’t forget Valley Cottage…we’ve contributed 1 or 2 good players to the program over the years too.

  116. NyackFan

10989. Of course. And run the Pop-Warner program wonderfully, no less. The jog around Rockland Lake is nice!

  117. Gmen

    Nyack Fan-
Your position is ridiculous. You think Rye fans/parents are the only ones who drink some before/during the game? PLEASE !!!! I’ve been to many games there – no one is loud, rude, drunk ( at least perceptibly), or vulgar.
You sound like a bitter loser. Sorry you are so miserable.
If your argument is about the money towns having athletic advantage- Bronxville and Scarsdale should be perennial powers – and as we know, they are not. Though B’ville does have a tough team this year -but it’s an anomaly.

  118. enough nyackfan

NyackFan, SHUT UP you DOUUUCHE! enough already! you think the rye tailgate should be a news story?? HA!!! you are out of your mind? you have no proof of anything. you werent standing in the tent watching who drank what and who drove. stop trying to cause trouble. your ignorance keeps growing and growing.

  119. rye guy

its obvious the rye communnity supports its school(top 100 in the nation), it’s athletic programs (like 8 state championships in the last 10 years or so), and embraces it’s rich tradition(garnet 10580 and Jim will give us chapter and verse).

But why doesn’t it’s board of ed support it’s teachers and coaches? The JN reported last week or so that the teachers have now gone three years without a new contract, how can this be true? The article was called “Tea Party in Rye?” According to NYACKFAN, the article should have been titled “Long Island Ice Tea Party in Rye!” LOL Embarrassing if you ask me!

    Back to football.

Is it a public “prep” school based on it’s socio-economic status? Who cares. What we can say is that they have built a football machine top to bottom. Class A, B, C, whatever class-

They have done it with Class.

  120. /190

    Glorius,

The top 5 yardage gainers at Cornell so far in yardage gained order listed by size/wt):
    6/178
    5 ft 9in/190
    5 ft 11 in/201
    6 ft 2in/205
    5 ft 10in/158

McCormack right now before a college weight/speed training program is 5 ft 10 195-200 and I’m guessing is around a 4.6-4.7.

Appreciate your comment but still think he’d definitely contribute as an IVY running back. This doesn’t include his intangibles of substantial work and winning ethic, and a great football head + ability to “see the field” in front of him (knows when to use and not use his blockers if need be).

  121. slacrosse

    Glorius,

The above message about cornell’s rushers came from “slacrosse”, not ”/190”. Dont know how that name got in there?

  122. NyackFan

    enoughnyackfan,
I walked through the area at halftime to see what all the fuss was about. The proof is that there was drinking across the street at halftime with about 100 people, there was a G-tent in the name of the school above one of the service tables, a handwritten poster promoted the tailgate party, several SUVs hatches open with coolers open with people serving it up… In the second half were inebriated people near me in the stands, who then walked across the street into their cars, past the police who were directing them across the street, and then directing them out of the parking lot onto the road. This cannot be denied by anyone who is honest about it. Whatever, I made my point.

  123. enough nyackfan

the point is that you are a jealous, sore loser, hater! i have an old friend from nyack, used to be a helluva RB, jermaine harris, he acts nothing like you! you are a disgrace to nyack- get over the loss rye handed you, stop talking crap about a good town and go back over the bridge and shut your hole!

  124. Sore Loser

    Garnet 10580,

1997-2000…..they were around .500 (which is terrible for Rye) This preceded their dominant run….i wasnt saying anything negative about Rye all i was doing was comparing Rye to other similar programs that were never able to achieve what Rye has…so calm down

  125. go deep

what is hysterical about Nyackfan and his comments is that the same type of thing happens at Nyack games!! Before and after the Ossining game there were people tailgaiting outside of the field. One family had a fire going with a tent set up and they were drinking alcohol.

Don’t even bother denying it, because a cop in streets clothes was on the beat to make sure everything was copesetic..

Now be quiet and get back to football please

  126. Hoops fan

    slacrosse,
I think McCormack is an excellent high school back and could probably contribute to a good D3 program. I’m not sure if you appreciate how good some of these Ivy league backs are. Just think, who was the last local RB to end up in the Ivy league? I think it was Matt Murray from Greeley. Murray was a dominant HS back. I think he finished with somewhere over 5000 yards for his career. I think Murray was definitely ahead of McCormack as a HS back – and thats no knock on McCormack at all, just a statement of how good Murray was. Despite how good Murray was at RB, he ended up on defense at Yale I believe. I’m sure McCormack could make the team at Cornell if he walked on, but I just don’t see him at this point getting playing time at RB. This whole talk is besides the point, because apparently he’s chosen not to play football at the next level.

  127. Ex -Husky

Where are alll the Somers front page boys now!It just goes to show you that you played the ole cupcake schedule. And if that is true what Coach Tony D sain in the locker-room,(I always though of him as an arrrogant person anyway)you really stink. And as for Rye-predicted 28-7 and they are peaking look out boys

  128. scary

It seems to be inconceivable to some folks that the reason the Rye people are comfortable is that they busted their a$$es to become that way. Very few were handed the keys to a Lexus as one imbecile leftist suggested earlier. Hard work and sacrifice along with talent begets wealth, but that is very difficult for somebody who knows little about either to comprehend. It is very easy to sit back and think that “those people” just got lucky and resent them. That is a bunch of crap propogated by those who are too lazy to pursue something better.

  129. slacrosse

    Hoops fan,

Appreciate your point and enough about one kid who I’m sure doesn’t want to be in the “headlights” anyway.

The only thing that matters to Rye’s kids is to continue to put out a TEAM EFFORT as they always do and take it to POK.

    Go Garnets!

  130. Lion

There is only one blogger who has brought up Ryes “unfair advantage”. I personally don’t agree with that opinion.

    Let’s keep this in perspective.

I can’t condone any drinking at high school games, at the event or near it. These games are for the kids. We as adults are just there. Big problem with underage drinking in high school. I bet this is an issue which transcends socio-economic status.

Thats the difference. NFL games are for adults. Adult events imply adult behaviour. They can sell beer at stadiums under the presumption that the adults will be responsible…well, usually.

  131. Jeff P.

Somehow, scary, I doubt anyone here is trying to cast aspersions on whatever financial success some people in Rye have achieved. IMHO, NyackFan’s comments had nothing to do with any political ideology and everything to do with his/her frustration with the outcome of the game. I think most people here realize that Rye’s commitment to maintaining a successful football program is the true reason for what it has been able to accomplish throughout the years…

  132. Lion

Just a comment on the Ossining fan who remarked on the fan “drinking” taking place at the Nyack-Ossining game at Nyack.

I saw that to. This take place on the front lawn of a private house, caddy corner to McCalmum field. It looked to be a bar-b-que with perhaps 10-15 people. In all my years going to Nyack games, I’d never seen that before at that house or any of the neighboring houses. I just assumed that since it was homecoming that an alumnus must have had some friends over.

I guess there are some similarities to Rye’s tailgating, but one differnce would be…as a big Nyack fan I didn’t get an invite to this little shindig on someones small front lawn. Are all Rye families and fans invited to the Rye tailgating?

  133. Just a fact

You want a story. How many HS students going to the games drinking 40’s.

I truly do not care who drinks. Just DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  134. NyackFan

    Jeff P. and enoughnyackfan,
Why do you keep making me out to be something I’m not?! I am not upset about the loss. And I stated that SEVERAL times, but you keep choosing to stereotype me that anyone who has critical comments is upset about the football game and a hater. Get over it and stop characterizing. The point I am making goes beyond the play on the field, and has nothing to do with the results of the game.

I am not a hater of Rye even though you make me out to be one. I am not upset with our boys for being overmatched. I was impressed with the overpowering opposition. But you don’t want to see that.

Again, what I was ticked off about was an organized drinking party directly associated with a HS football game with a definite linkage to the team and school itself through its G-tent. I do not believe that is responsible behavior.

And to state again, there were well over 1500 fans by my estimation at the game, so this is not whatsoever an indictment of the total Rye fanbase, except perhaps that they tolerate this behavior. But, I am thinking that they and the school itself, along with the police have somehow been handcuffed. Those who perpetuate this should think about what they are portraying. That is MY POINT.

As for the firepit party in Nyack, there was no G-tent, there were no police directing people onto the property, there was no handwritten sign promoting a tailgate party, there was no coordinated effort with about 10 vehicles with open coolers serving out the back. That house on the corner seems to have their own house party every year around Halloween/Homecoming, not an organized event every game of about 100 people all coordinated together. Stupid comparison.

  135. NyackFan

    Scary,

“Hard work and sacrifice along with talent begets wealth, but that is very difficult for somebody who knows little about either to comprehend.”

This is certainly true, and I agree with you. But the starting point also makes a huge difference, does it not?

  136. section1scout

cant we all just get along?

  137. enough nyackfan

NyackFan, you are full of KRAP! here is your quote from your original post, tell me what this has to do with your opposition to the tailgaiting and drinking?? that WAS NOT your only point so stop lying.

“All cudos to the powerful, big, steak, veggie, and potato fed combined with fitness and workout gyms in your mansions watching the ESPN flat screens, OLines and DLines of Rye.(Unlike some of our boys who grow up on Kennedy Fried Chicken and work out down at the Y but that’s not an excuse) ”

That quote is what makes you an uninformed hater.

  138. NyackFan

I made two points, actually, so on that point you are very right.

    1. Tailgate issue.
    2. The difference between well funded football programs and lesser funded programs.

You just didn’t get my provocative way of saying it.(maybe too much satire that you and many others did not seem to understand so I will not do it again on this blog, that’s for sure). The food satire was a way to show how big the “well-fed” guys are that beat up on us but y’all didn’t get that either. That there is inequity in funding is a fact that can’t be denied. Wealthier athletic programs like Rye that choose to invest in football (and of course have several of the other elements of good coaching…etc.) more often often have a greater chance at success than underfunded ones. I would believe that well-funded programs with a good parent/alumni association like Rye (except for the sippers of course) will draw kids to participate. Some schools invest in other things such as music, fine arts, or whatever, based on what the parents/taxpayers demands are.

You also did not choose to acknowledge my many “cudos” of Rye’s great game and some of its players, and the fans. That was in the original post and remains consistent and debunks the silly “hater” tag. You choose to characterize me that I was just simply upset from the game and thus using other things to show rage. Such dumb selective reading.

SO STOP TAGGING ME AS A HATER!!!!!!

  139. enough nyackfan

you are out of your mind, you are a hater. what is the point of making up sh*t about workout gyms in their mansions? where do you get that from? you just stereotype for comedy? you think that without Rye’s flat screens and home gyms Nyack would have had a chance? LOSER! get a life. and for future reference is it “KUDOS”.

  140. fanoftheman

east pester…i wasnt sure if you were making a play on words or just misspelled eastchester…after reading your blogs i’m sure you just misspelled eastchester…another fine product of the yonkers school system. you know what they say…you can take the kid out of yonkers but you cant take yonkers out of the kid.

  141. fanoftheman

nyackfan stop with the excuses…its 2009. it’s time you realize it’s up to you to go out and do it…this is not the land of entitlements…even though thats what obama would like. you have every opportunity to make it and if you dont it’s your fault! so stop the excuses…it’s so old!

  142. garnet10580

    Sore Loser

I deal in facts – following please find Rye’s record for the years you cited as being around .500% – a terrible four years for Rye according to you. Unfortunately your first post just stated “terrible”. Anyway:

    1997 – 7-2 or .778%
    1998 – 4-5 or .444%
    1999 – 5-4 or .556%, and
    2000 – 8-1 or .889% for a four year toal of

    24-12 or .667%

Most coaches/programs would welcome a .667% winning percentage over four years.

  143. sportsfan

Just because a community is wealthy, doesn’t mean it’s members didn’t work like dogs to get there.

That being said, drinking at a high school sporting event is out of line. High school sports are about the kids, not the parents living through their kids. There are plenty of opportunities for adults to get together and party. A high school sporting event is not one of those times. Very poor judgement—let’s clean it up and set good examples for our kids.

  144. scary

    NyackFan

I’m not sure what starting point you are referring to. Most of these people did not begin with any money at all, they worked and studied hard, not giving up. Most still work extremely hard, so this vision of Rye you harbor is very inaccurate. You can apply the same to most affluent communities – these are the people who are self made.

  145. NyackFan

“You can apply the same to most affluent communities – these are the people who are self made.”

This is not wholly true. You have bought into the one-sided perspective of The American Dream.

    Possible advantages:
    1. parents saving into a college fund
    2. attending a good academic high school in a more affluent neighborhood
    3. tutoring outside of school
    4. social learning from peers (including fellow players)
    5. extra-curricular activities
    6. Food nutrition
    7. Immigration status
    8. Success in investment, real estate, inheritance fund etc.
    9. And potentially, a great football program that teaches about life beyond football and builds lifelong skills (both Rye and Nyack do this).....

Should I go on? Of course, what you do with these types of advantages is all up to the individual. In that sense you are very right that many are self-made. But you cannot claim that growing up in a place like East New York (for example) will create the same advantages as growing up in Rye. Not only will someone rising up out of disadvantage have to make it on their own, they will have to overcome many who have been programmed by parents and environment to succed. And believe me, I’m no social-leftist either, and I do not harbor resentment towards people living in Rye, but just stating the truth in a somewhat mistaken satirical way.

But, apparently I cannot make social commentary on this blog here any longer, so I’m out.
