Pre-Camp Rankings

July
24

Football camps across the Lower Hudson Valley, led by Champions Camp at New Rochelle, are set to begin in a few weeks. There’s also exactly three weeks to the first official day of practice on Aug. 21.

Sounds like a good time to examine the top teams in the area. Of all the rankings I post, this is probably the most meaningless. But it makes for good discussion, so let’s take a look:

Power rankings
1. Iona Prep:
No question, the top team in the area with all the talent coming back from last year’s CHSFL AAA championship squad.
2. New Rochelle: Even without QB Jonny McGhee, this is a team poised for big things. In the five classes, the Huguenots are probably the biggest favorite to win a title.
3. Ossining: The talent Ossining had on the bench, and coming up through the system, is very good. There shouldn’t be much dropoff.
4. Rye: My early bold prediction for the 2009 season for the Garnets: They’ll start 0-1 in Class A… and will get to the Dome.
5. Stepinac: The Crusaders have some studs on offense. If they fill the holes on defense, big things could be in store.
6. North Rockland: Although the Red Raiders have some question marks, Sal Sulla is Rockland County’s top player and will carry them in their league.
7. Carmel: The Rams have to rebuild the offensive line and find some downfield options for quarterback Ryan Shilling. But Carmel has a way of plugging holes year after year and should be in decent shape.
8. Fordham Prep: Fordham has a strong core of talent back, led by running back Bruce Grant, who put up ridiculous rushing numbers late last season.
9. Nyack: The reigning Class A champs graduated a ton of talent. But there’s still something left for a run into the postseason.
10. Poughkeepsie: How could the Pioneers not be? They’re top-heavy with talent and could be a dangerous team in Class A.
On the brink: Somers; John Jay-EF; Ramapo; Mount St. Michael; Eastchester; Ketcham.

  2. lost soul

good picks kevin. and who does ossining have coming back for rye. im not in the loop cause i just got back from europe???????

  3. 10960

Nyack Usualy wins with great defense. Last year Nyack had an excellent defense. Note that Nyacks defensive kryptonite has been scrambling quarterbacks. How many Nyack opponents have elusive quarterbacks this year???

  4. bob

your in your late twenties. Its the middle of the summer, your not married. Whats on your mind. High School football and when the first practice is. Cmon kev. I mean really.

  5. who?

Kevin is married, hes said it before and high school football is his job, he gets paid good money to cover it

    I got your back Kev

  6. Franco's 624-CUTS

Class AA Ramapo is done their track team is gone!!!!!!
Class A I Like Nyack ahead of SING SING talent of players about the same But the Coaching edge goes to Nyack!!!!
    Cmon BOB. I mean really. R U 4 REAL!!!!!!!!

P.S. Sal Sulla is Rockland County’s top player

  7. Rileygirl

Kev, great job in noticing Ketcham. They are gonna be good. Iona Prep will be a top 30 team in the country next year.Wheres Maniero going( qb from croton)

  8. thetruth

Watch out for BCliff. They will be the real deal this year in Class B. The Qb is a stud!

  9. patriot

dont sleep on the east fishkill patriots , every year they get better and better

  10. LetsGoNEWRO

Very excited to see how Rye does in A
    I think they’ll be good
won’t go undefeated and won’t be as dominant as they were in B
    What happened to Harrison ?!
I’m so use to seeing them somewhere in the top 5 of their league
Seems like the times have changed
    I wonder what happened.

  11. WingTGuy

    Great picks Kevin,

I would put Eastchester in the top 5 of Class A. They have alot coming back this year.

They have had great regular seasons, peaked early and then struggled in the playoffs.

It seems that this is their year to prove they are a top program in A. It will be interesting to see if they can take the next step. Their roster looks a lot like Nyack’s last year. Mostly seniors with a junior QB.

Lakeland has a lot coming back this year as well. Prunty had a great season last year at QB, can he lead Lakeland to the playoffs?

  12. 10707

    WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

The CHSFL website has Fordham and Stepinac ranked 12 & 13 respectively out of the 20 team league.

EVERY team on Fordham’s regular season schedule is ranked AHEAD of them.

EVERY team on Stepinac’s regular season schedule is ranked BEHIND them.

    GO RAMS!!!!

  13. Matt Spillane

    Rileygirl,

Nick Mainiero is going to Marist College to play defensive back.

  14. hollow fan

That was a bold move picking p-ville ahead of sleepy in class B!!!
I cant wait for this season to start, there seems to be a lot of excitement in the air this year.

  15. INDIAN

Looks Like Nyack Has to prove them selves again. But it dosent matter because nyack will come out on top again

  16. IonaPower

    10707

The CHSFL uses a power point system to rank the entire 20 team league. The first 12 teams will comprise the CHSFL AAA with the remaining teams in the AA and A. Fordham Prep will be in the AAA and Stepinac is unfortunately in the AA. The playoffs in the AAA are the top 8 teams with the bottom 4 moving to the AA playoffs. So the possibility exists if fordham or iona do not finish in the top 8 then they could see stepinac in the aa playoffs. The schedules are determined by the power point system. Iona plays teams seeded 2 through 8. Fordham will play teams seeded from around 5 through 12.

  17. Class A Fan

Rye is ranked way to high, not for the fact that they dont have talent and cant be that good, but for the fact that they are playing bigger and beter teams in class a this season. My class a rankings would be:

    1) Ossining- best team on paper heading into season. Big line and tough go-to guys.

    2) Nyack- great defense and should be just as tough as last season even though they lost some guys.

    3) Rye- Ranked high, but have the ability to prove themselves to everyone.

    4) Eastchester- Have had the talent to go far, but just havent had the mentality of champions. Can they use that talent to its full capability this year because this is there last chance with their juniors and sophomores being not but average.

    5) Poughkeepsie- Very quick and agile players. A lot of playmakers. IF they can put it all together they can be very good.

  18. Vick

all this talk about the teams in section 1 is crazy…. i just cant wait until the season starts so we can finally know who is the best in section 1.

im hopeing the class A finals is ossining vs rye cause i think thats going to be a great game

  19. Standard Observer

Rye vs. Ossining???? Old School Vs Mickey Mouse New School….. and 10960, yes Nyack has Ossining to face with an elusive QB in Lucky #4 on ossining who will move to play QB next year he was the back up QB last year but was more of a threat for him to play WR as they had a good QB in Kraemer.. Rye’s QB is a payton manning type slow not agile good arm smart cant run at all… somers never has a fast qb and poughkeepsie who knows maybe theyll run a wildcat if theyre smart!! but yes nyack must face a quick and agile QB in Lucky from Ossining

  20. 10630

    Standard Observer

Eck may not be a running quarterback, but he is far from not being able to run at all. He, just like his brother, is an athlete. Maybe since there were few situations where Connor had to run you are unaware. The fact of the matter is that if Nyack gives him the opportunity he will exploit it. He has decent speed and he is surprisingly tough for a QB.

  21. Class C

    Class C Rankings
    1. Dobbs- a team on a mission, looses two big guns in Alexander and Gardner, but return just about everyone else.
    2. Hastings-a very solid team, return virtually everyone besides simmons, and have a very solid running back in Luke D’allesandro(??spellin(
    3. Croton-the defending champs loose Superstars Maniero and Luntz, but have tremendous speed and a solid core of players returning for 09.
    4. Bronxville-very big physical team that can hhit, returns much of their team and a very good Defensive unit
    5. Magnus- The 5th spot is the harderst one to choose, but this team was etremely young. After only loosing 1 or 2 Senior starters the Falcons will be the 09 sleeper.

    Semifinals
    Dobbs Over Croton
    Hastings over Bville

    Finals
    Dobbs squeaks past Hastings

  22. Rivertown Fan

Class C makes very good points with magnus and hastings

  23. Standard Observer

    10630,

Yes I only saw rye play once last year in the rye v. harrison GAME… he obviously is an athlete and a great QB but in terms of QBs that could beat Nyack with their running ability I dont believe so.. as 10960 was saying Nyack will have trouble with a running QB my mistake for saying he cannot run at all, but he is no ray nichols in the running game.. and ray nichols is no connor eck in the throwing game.. not even close…. but yes it will take an elusive and versatile qb to beat Nyack’s strong defensive unit this year .. nyacks offense is a different story until their line improves and gains chemistry.. and how is eastchester this year im surprised they were left out of the rankings… i mean poughkeepsie 4th… they have athletes yes but poor coaching if garr or cas coached them theyd win state every year! poor disipline and coaching there they could not compete in playoffs putting them before somers… i dont agree somers still returns good athletes in tullgren, DIENNA, pfifner among others and have DeMatteo who still hasnt gotten over last years blow out to nyack in the section semi’s poughkeepsie.. way overrated!

  24. Exit 14

Franco Cuts lets see you predicted your son and his Clarkstown South squad to make noise last year we saw how that ended up now you say Ramapo has graduated their track team well check the roster there are still some members left and they will be fine. Sulla has a great line to run behind and is a back that will get his yards this year I will agree with that. What makes the Rockland league intriguing is that its always NR 1st or 2nd and who fills in the other spot. Cl.North is returning a lot, Suffern unfortunately has one or two decent players but never a dominant team, Cl.South loses a lot but will be competitive, Mamareneck has to find a replacement at Qb and Ramapo has to prove everyone wrong AGAIN. Say what you want about them losing everything to graduation they are still reigning champs in the Rockland League

  25. bigworm

Although this is a westchester county paper and a westchester county writer, dont sleep on Our Lady of Lourdes in Class B to hold their own. They bring back there star QB and a lot of returning OLineman. There Defense is returning a good amount of players too including Sean Rohde the best overall DBack from the section1 combine.

  26. nick

Is Mahopac going to be any good this year?

  27. 10707

    IONAPOWER

Thanks for the follow up and I understand the math but talk about the “kiss of death”.

Being ranked 12th in the CHSFL is truly ice station zebra.
Personally I think the Crusaders are the better team but it appears that the Westchester team from the Bronx truly has an uphill battle.

  28. Class A Fan

This year might be the most interesting in Class A in a long time. There is no team with a huge line like Ossining last year. There is no team with great athletic runningbacks like Somers last year. And there is no team with a great defense like Nyack last season. Every team is very close to eachother this season so it should be very interesting. I am not saying that teams this year arent as talented as in years past because that is not true, because it is very unclear of what team is going to just click when training camp gets going and the season starts. The team that clicks on both sides of the ball should take class a. I have watched a lot of class A teams so far this offseason and this is what i have seen and heard from people close to the teams:

Ossining- are a talented, strong team who is not as good as last years team. Last years team was extremely large, but this years is not. Should get a decent amount of wins, but will not go far in the playoffs.

Harrison- saw harrison training and is not anything like past successful harrison teams. they have no consistency or objective on offense, so that is going to be a problem. Are not big or as strong as past seasons. Is going to win the easy games, but wont have enough to win the tough ones.

Rye- Not an overly big team, but extremely strong. Very talented on both sides of the ball with fast linebackers, but not very talented secondary, so they can be thrown on. Their offense should be consistent and be able to move the ball down field. People close to the team have told me that these players and coaches are more pumped for this season in class a more than they ever were for class b. They are going to win games even against the best of competition, but will also lose some because of their inexperience against the tough teams.

Eastchester- The team that i truly believe is going to click this season on both sides of the ball. People close to the team have told me that these boys have been playing together for a long long time and the few who have been on varsity before the rest are just joining the bunch who have been playing together. This team can run the ball with two very athletic backs, but this season have a Qb who can throw the ball and they will definetly be throwing the ball way more than in past seasons so teams will no longer be able to stack 8 in box to stop the run. Will win games against both good and bad teams. If they have the right mentality and click the way i think they will, they could be seen deep in the playoffs.

Somers- Not as talented as the past two seasons. They lost their man-child running back in Lombardo, which is a huge loss. They still have deina but he is not as good as lombardo was. The defense has become a little slower and so has the offense. They still have a great coach who will win them some games with his play calls but wont win those big games against the tough teams that they have won in past years. Will struggle to make it past first round of the playoffs.

Fox Lane- A sneaky team that could pull off some upsets but most likely wont. They have lost a lot over the past two seasons and will struggle to make the playoffs. They have had some magical games over the past seasons; such as vs. eastchester last year to make playoffs, but they wil be losing those games this season.

I still want to see two of the top 5 teams that devaney ranked in Class A in Nyack and Poughkeepsie. I will report back on those two teams.

  29. ChiefWildEagle

Ossining QB will be Lamar Johnson, last years back up etc.
Lucky is back again this year, I don’t know where he will be on offense but a lot of people will know where he is on Defense. This kid hits like a fast moving truck and is also quite possibly the best punter in the section.

  30. 10960

It’s not easy to pass against a Dino Garr defense. There’s virtually no time to throw. His Defense is built on pressure. If a Rye opponent has a “good” qaurterback who has “time” to throw the ball to a “good” receiver then maybe Rye can be passed on.

It’s the Rye opponents who should be worried about the pass if anything. How many Connor Ecks are in class A??

Sounds like Ossining has a couple scramblers

But I doubt Coach Ricci will have his offense cater to the passing attack of Jamel Lucky or Lamar Johnson, which ever is their Quarterback this upcoming season.

Ray Nichols of Nyack will not average more then 5 pass attempts per game. So who else is out there for coach Garr to worry about the pass??

I know little bits here and there but I can’t honestly pick out a ranking. There’s not enough info.

I will say that I side with the clubs that have the more experienced and successful coaches when the talent levels even out across the board.

If the talent levels are even….. we know who those coaches are.

  31. Standard Observer

I think white collared rye will run and run and run but what receivers do they have nyacks DBs will shut them down isntantaniously

  32. panthers

The pville sleepy section final game is going to be a battle

  33. Ram Grad

Fordham Prep will certainly have an uphill battle but their QB, Brendan McGlynn showed signs of poise and potential last year and should’ve been the starting QB each game rather than platooning. Bruce Grant is just fast and elusive. If he added any bulk to that thin frame of his, he should certainly make a name for himself in the eyes of some recruiters. Anyone know where their DL Charlie Argast is going to college?

  34. IonaPower

    10707

Stepinac was replaced by Kellenburg from Long Island in the CHSFL AAA. At least Fordham Prep will avoid St. Anthony, Iona Prep and St. Joseph by the Sea which should help somewhat but as you know any team in the CHSFL AAA will be a tough opponent.

  35. LI Football

    Argast will attend Trinity Pawling

Kellenberg asked to be put in AAA next year. They have had very successful lower levels the past few years & are a big school, The CHSFL had decide to go with a [1-14] AAA this year. Stepinac was in AAA with St John the Baptist. All 14 teams had a AA schedule at that time. When Moore Catholic left league in Feb, the league had to change schedules because teams at bottom of league would not have a full schedule from league [ only 5 games]. With that being said the league went back to last years setup 1-12 which left Stepinac & St John’s out of AAA.

  36. LI Football

all 14 teams had a AAA schedule in Feb when Moore left .

    where is Big Joe?

  38. Franco's 624-CUTS

    Exit 14

Souths 08 team, finished just about where Nth Rock finished in 09 team they finished 3rd in section1AA beating JJcross river in the Matteo Bowl, I really thought that they Would finishes better in 09.but suffered alot of key injuries to the skilled players on SOUTHS SQUAD SAnders,KillCar,Joe FIN, and even SAGZ playing with a ripped Quad and through Concussions!!! Ramapo only has 1 returning Track star the rest are all gone.Ramapo this year Stands where South kind of stood, comin g into the 09 Season.Hey anything can Happen but I really think That Noth,Mamareneck even South with there Oline who will be Juniors this year have a better Chance of taking the 2 seed spot in 1aa West!!!!!
    P.S.SULLA SUPER 11 BaBy!!!!!!!!!!!

  39. 10960

Ramapo has some serious talent this year. You guys have no Idea. That program has a future under coach Dan Zotter.

  40. HS Football Fan

    10960,

Well said about the Rye defense. They do pressure opposing offenses which causes many problems & mistakes. Rye is very difficult to run or throw on. That is why they continue to dominate & are on the winning streak they are on. Other teams that use a read type defense should follow suit. It is HS football…keep the defense simple & aggressive. Defense wins championships. Should be an interesting year in class A.

  41. Navajos, Throgs Neck

    Iona Prep Crazed,

Big Joe will be back don’t worry about that. Wait until he sees the rankings with no Harrison in it. He must be on vacation.

    Navajos

  42. not garnet fan

ossining played teams that blitz rye every down. horace greely blitz every down and they blow them out. so rye should think of another way to stop the “O” baby. lets goo “O”!!!

  43. Dustine

    Kevin,

I see with your per-season ranking that “AA North” is the toughest division once again in Section I. Last year they had 3 teams in the “AA” semi-finals, Mahopac,Carmel and JJEF. Losing Scardale and adding JJCR just makes it even more difficult in the league. No question, that every week you are in a “battle” in this league. It should be very interesting. In looking at the schedule, Mahopac has an almost impossible first 3 games. They are up in Dutchess for their first two @Arlington and @JJEF before coming home to play what might be the biggest rivalry in the “North”
Carmel. They then go on to play @ JJCR prime time on Saturday October 3rd 7:30pm (JJCR Homecoming). If they make the sectional this year it would be a very impressive accomplishment.

  44. TyCobb

Will White Plains ever get their program back on track? What is going on at WP? I’ve been away for a few years living on the West Coast and I have no idea what’s been going on. Any thoughts about the state of WP football would be appreciated.

  45. Just a Fact

AA North will be the most competetive, but as usual will not be able to keep up with the big boys. New Ro runs away with it unless North Rock can show up this year. The rest are playing for third place.

  46. Just a Fact

Another fact, Ramapo has no and will never have a good enough line no matter what talent is in the back field.

  47. Huskies Forever

Harrison is off the map??? Rye to the dome??? Wow…....

  48. Standard Observer

I must say.. as much as I hate ossining as a nyack alum and fan i will be rooting for them in week 1 vs. rye…. Rye needs a welcoming to class A right from the start and I hope ossining can do that to them and do it good… What will ossining have to do to do this?

  49. section 1

i believe carmel, not north rockland, is new ro’s competition in AA

  50. Jim

Question NOT a Prediction. What if Rye takes it to Ossining in week #1 instead of the other way around? What message will this send to Class A? Incidently, the all time series between Rye and Ossining …...4-0-1…..Ossining will be going after their first ever win against the Garnets.

  51. Just a Fact

Even if the talent was even, Coach D got the Carmel coach in his back pocket! If Sulla is the real deal, Carmel won’t be able to stop North Rockland’s power. That has been the beauty of Caseralla for years. He lines up in the power I and says try and stop me. Though North Rock has been missing a featured back in the recent past, this can be the year. Hate to put pressure on Sulla but here it is.

  52. Husky 92

Im telling you guys. It is hard to beat a team with alot of momentum from last year! Especially winning the State Championship. I saw it with HHS, when they moved up to Class A after winning State Championships. I really feel disgusted with myself for even saying Rye will win. Go Huskies!

  53. not garnet fan

yo guys are crazy but we’ll just have to wait for the season to really see.

and who do you guys think won super 11? lol just throwin that out there.

  54. Vick

if rye beats ossining in the first game of the season then i think that every other team out the in class A wiil be scared to play against them because most of the teams couldnt beat ossining.

so for the rest of the games on rye has they will win easily until they play ossining again and im betting ossining will be hungry for that win in the playoffs.

  55. IonaPower

Some observations from the very early power rankings.

Class AA- I think some people are sleeping on White Plains. I have been told that they have some very strong talent at the lower levels and have the ability to make it to the section 1 AA semifinals. I also find it telling that North Rockland seems to have dropped off from being a power program which is surprising.

Class A – I think it is the most balanced of the classes with several good teams having a chance to win a championship. Whoever comes out of section 1 will have a difficult time contending with upstate power Aquinas who I have been told is very strong.

In Class A I think Harrison is another sleeper who might make noise with a talented Junior class. If they find a QB to run the triple option and if some of their younger talent grows quick they can come out and surprise this year. Also Roosevelt from Yonkers has some very good speed that might catch some teams off guard.

In the end playoff seeding will play a major role in who gets out of Class A.

CHSFL- I think Iona has a chance to repeat as CHSFL AAA champs but it will be difficult. The CHSFL is very strong this year with serious balance. All you have to do is look at these ranking. Kevin has Stepinac in his top 5 and they are not even seeded as one of the top 12 teams in the division. Fordham Prep is another example of the strength of the league as they are seeded 12 in the AAA division. So Iona is in essence playing a team EACH week that would be looked at as a strong program in the Lower Husdon Region.

  56. WingTGuy

    IonaPower,

Aquinas is always a threat, but they have to get past Sweet Home or Iroquois to make it to the dome.

In my opinion they should play in a league similar to the CHFSL. They have a very strong program that is often noted as an all star team from Rochester.

There situation would be similar to Iona playing there current schedule and then joining the Section 1 class A playoffs. Most years Iona would be the favorite.

There is a lot of debate about this issue on other forums. They will have another strong team this year, but Sweet Home will be strong as well. They lost their best player to an injury from a car accident, but have a great deal coming back.

If Cornwall is even close to their level from last year, Section 1 will have a hard time getting to the semis.

Class A will be very competitive again this year.

  57. X

New Ro at #2 thats a tad ridiculous and its even more ridiculous to say without johnny mcghee they’d still be #2

  58. Coach Darlos

I was at a very nice 7 on 7 tournament on Saturday. I got sun stroke. I was in bed all day today.lol New ro, stepinac and iona prep was there. With about 12 schools there. Westchester represented well. But i feel Westchester needs more parent support.

  59. Huskies Forever

First time I could remember Harrison not being mentioned.Yes they are young, but will & always have put together a competitive team. How far they go will depend on their running game.Tanner Knox will play a big role this season…

  60. hollow fan

Its hard for me to admit this but Rye probably has a really good chance of beating ossining the first game of the year. I see the opposite of kevins prediction coming out. Ossining always starts slow, then gets better as the kids start to gel. They almost lost to Lakeland in game 1 last year. If they start like that again Rye will beat them week 1, then lose in the playoffs. thoughts

  61. 10707

Coach Darlos: It appears that you are well aware of the upcoming pre season camps. I’m sure many of us would be grateful if you took a moment and shared with us what’s coming up, when and where. Thanks

IonaPower: I think you hit the nail on the head and after seeing Kevin’s predictions it only reinforces what I alluded to in an earlier correspondence and that is if Stepinac and Fordham belong in the current “top ten” and don’t even appear on Iona’s schedule, the CHSFL is going to be a difficult chore this season.

Haven’t seen Ossining but saw Rye at their camp and at Iona’s. Knowing the size of the school, you have to be impressed with their talent. Couldn’t help but think that it had to help to go up against NR & IP in preparation for their season in a new class.

  62. Just a Fact

X you are a hater or coach at New Ro.

  63. Standard Observer

The bottom line is rye and ossinings meeting shows little unless it is a blow out… look at last years season nyack losses 20-7 everyone goes ossining has the section, but no nyack came back hungrier who ever won that first game was going to the loose the 2nd it may be the same way with rye and ossining if they are even… and plus garr is a great coach and will learn alot from a first meeting… but still im going to otown in this just to put rye in their place after beating up on the little boys all these years….

  64. bigdaddy

when practice starts Aug. 21, Mcghee will be on the field for new ro.

  65. Y

I think North Rockland has had a couple of down years, but you can’t sleep on them. Their 2005 team was one of the deepest teams ever. If they did not fumble in the second quarter that year at the 2 yard line going in to score, they would have beat Monroe Woodbury. But if my Aunt had ba$$$ she be my Uncle.

  66. Y

big daddy is correct. He will be on the field, well rested I might add.

  67. football fan

don’t count Somers out yet, they have alot of great athletes returning

  68. As What?

big daddy and Y as what a ball boy? water boy? band member? male cheerleader? maybe all of the above? Definitely not as a player. please explain to me why anyone thinks McGhee will be coming back. Kevin has reported all spring and summer that McGhee has not been practicing with NewRo, not been to any camps, and 7-on-7’s, another poster said they even gave away his jersey number. Coach D would lose all respect if he let the kid back on the team now. think about if you were a player on NewRo and you went to all the summer practices and camps, and McGhee didn’t and then the Coach let him back on the team. if I was a player on that team i’d be pissed if that happens. there’d be a mutiny over in NewRo if that happened. But, here’s my question. Can anyone on here who has posted that Mcghee will be back offer any proof that would over ride what Kevin has reported? didn’t think so. get over it, the kid is done.

  69. As What?

oh, and by the way, I heard he put on his facebook page that he is thinking about coming back to play…..for mt. vernon. now that i would believe if someone posted that, but not that he’ll play for NewRo, not happenin.

I am aware of the Aquinas and CBA Syracuse debates upstate. I think it would be impossible to a have a Catholic league in that part of the state becuase of the lack of schools in that region. Aquinas would have to move to the Buffalo Catholic league which I do not think would happen. The Buffalo Catholic league is another league that does not participate in the NYS playoffs.

    10707

I would not be surprised if the winner of the CHSFL AAA has 2 losses going into the championship. Everyone in that league is going to beat up on each other. Iona has a rough schedule.

  73. Willie Mays Hayes

Re Eastchester QB’s. Interesting comments about E having a passing game in ‘09. Like to know who the E QB’s will be this year, what’s changed with the coaches approach to the offense and type of passing attack we can look forward to ..

  74. Y

As what? (or New Ro associate afraid to use your normal blog name) He will come in crying, the Coaches will put a vote to the team, he will sit out several games as penalty, be on the field mid year. See you then. Inside Johnny be laughing at all of you.

  75. Y

Kevin, are you trying to be complicit with getting Johnny back out on the field? You do not have to respond we know your answer.

Well I hope the pressure from the article does for the kids sake. Don’t want to be another kid hanging out at the Univeristy of Lincoln Avenue.

Here is the article for others anyway:

    http://www.lohud.com/article/2009907270322

  76. As What?

Y….not a “NewRo” associate, I post under many names on here, i’m actually a fan of a team that isn’t talked about much on here but i follow section 1 football in general and u still haven’t answered my question, what proof do you have? the scenario you laid out makes sense, IF you have proof Mcghee has changed his mind and looking to play. Sounds like Coach D kicked him off the team and that horse has left the barn though, so what i’m saying is that there is no going back even if mcghee wanted too. andf, the article in today’s paper proves my point. the kid is done at NewRo. maybe like my friend said, he’s gonna transfer to mt. vernon and play for them. what’s university of lincoln avenue?

  77. allday

soo did mcghee quit on his own or did he get kicked off the team?????

  78. mahopac??

Does anyone know how mahopac will be this year? I havent heard much about them on the blogs

  79. Rockland Guy

Just some observations. People are underestimating Ramapo. They have some talent returning, even on the line. The other teams in that league will not sniff North Rockland or Ramapo. The coaching staff at Ramapo is legit. North is doing a good job improving their program but is not there yet, I am not sure they have the athletes to compete with the big two. South is just unstable, and Suffern is well, just Suffern, the kids do not know what to do without a stick or a bat in their hands. I have not seen Mamaroneck.

Nyack will do very well in their league as always. Looks like both TZ and Albertus have good quarterbacks who can throw the ball with nice touch. Speaking of quarterbacks, I bet North Rockland is wishing that someone steps up to play QB. They are very weak at the position so look fo Casserella to go back to his old school ways of running the ball. He has some big hosses up front.

Lastly, Spring Valley will put speed on the field on both sides of the ball. The program finally has the right coach.

Juust some thoughts from a casual observer.

  80. Y

As what? We are suppose to believe you know all this stuff about Johnny and New Ro practices but are not associated with them except for what you read on Kevin’s blogs? Nice try. You fool no one, but please feel free to contiue the charade.

To get back on topic. No one has proof Johnny is going to attempt to come back. This is a blog and the last time I checked you put down your opinions. The spring and summer practices run long and my assumption is that a 17 year old kid, especially one that has had as much success as Johnny has had, does not feel he needs to attend all the practices. HE WANTS A LIFE! After all he is 17.

If you read Kevin’s article, the Coach specifically mentions he will cross the bridge when it comes. Let me spell that out for you, the Coach is leaving the door open.

Again, I do hope Johnny comes back, for his own sake. Football can lead to College which could lead to a degree for Johnny and to me that is what is most important. The kids future, which I am certain will not be playing football on Sunday’s.

  81. 10960

    Just a fact,

You say Ramapo has no line and never will. Do you know who’s on Ramapo’s line?? Do you know what they can do?? Can you confirm this??

You say Coach D has the Carmel coach in his back pocket. What’s coach D’s record against Carmel last year??

You say Carmel can’t stop North Rocklands power. How do you know this?? Is North Rockland on the carmel schedule next season?? Who’s on North Rocklands line?? Any notable players that you can confirm?? Who’s on Carmels line??

You also said North Rockland has been missing a feature back in recent years. What do you consider recent? What year exactly were they missing this back??

    Jim,

You ask what message will Rye be sending to class A teams if they defeat Ossining. I think the message is clear, what do you think that message may be??

    Not a Garnet fan,

What defense does Horace Greeley run? What defense does Rye run? Since you used Horace Greeley as a measuring stick for Ryes defense against Ossining. Who did greeley have on their line last year?? Who did Rye have?? Was was the size comparison??

    Vick,

Are you saying that Coach Castellano and Coach DeMatteo will be scared of Rye if Rye defeats Ossining?? Are you saying that teams like Nyack, Somers and East Chester will lose easily to Rye simply because Rye defeats Ossining?? Why would you say that?? Can you confirm who are the key players of all sqauds??

    Iona Power,

How long has it been since north Rockland won a section championship? Who was the last team to win a section championship besides New Rochelle? Considering that North Rockland is not a power program as you may say. If they’re not a power program then who is and why?? What makes a power program a power program??

By the way, when are you going to invite me to join you for an Iona game??
I’d like to finally see this Iona program in action.

    Standard observer,

I also want to add that everyone went Somers/Ossining then Nyack took it from everyone. I’m assuming everyone will probably go Ossining/Rye this year. If thats the case then why??

    As what?,

Kevin Devaney doesn’t know everything does he?? Are practices mandatory before August?? There’s no proof that he’s coming back, your right but what proof is there that he isn’t returning?? Can you confirm that he will not return by submitting proof?? Proof isn’t evidence, it’s proof. Can you confirm this??

The point of my post is to remind bloggers that we can’t give effective information without supporting details. we can’t state a fact is a fact if its merely a belief or oppinion.

Keep in mind not to curse Devaney for his rankings. He clearly states that they’re Pre-camp rankings. I’m sure he’ll gather as much intelligence as possible before he gives us something a little more firm.

  82. Rileygirl

Sad to hear about Mcghee. I remember my last high school football and basketball game like it was yesterday( both were almost 20 yrs ago). I remember the regrets that I had in terms of how I could have prepared better, how I was gonna miss battling w/ my boys and everything that comes along with high school sports.

This youngster didnt exactly go out on top the final games of the past two years. If hes got family or personal issues than my prayers are with he and those he loves. However, If this is not the case the females will always be there, the parties will always be there so whoever has his ear, make him play. NewRo has a great program and they will survive without him, for his sake I hope he plays

  83. IonaPower

    10960

I think you would agree that North Rockland has dropped off from their normal standards. North Rockland was a program that many people felt was on the same level as St. Anthony during the early 90’s through around 1998. Before the Ray Rice era New Rochelle had major trouble beating North Rockland.

I know North Rockland is the only team besides New Rochelle to win Class AA but in reality Class AA is not as balanced as Class A so it really has been New Rochelle and everyone else. I know North Rockland is very good but they are not the program they have been in the past. That all can change.

  84. As What?

Y… believe what you want, butt i did get all my “info” from reading this blog, and a friend of mine from school who is friends with mcghee on facebook. sounds like your the real bitter insider who can’t believe the kid quit/got kicked off for missing “non” mandatory workouts. the workouts are called non mandatory but we all know they really are mandatory, that’s where coaches make playing time decisions, etc. everyone on here who played hs football knows of a kid or played with a kid who missed the so-called non-mandatory workouts and the coach told him he missed too many workouts dont bother playing. 10960, my proof is that the kid hasnt been there!!!! there are plenty of kids that have been on the varsity and are making all the workouts. dirienzo jr started as a sophomore and he makes all the workouts. dont give me that bs that mgchee isnt coming to off season workouts because he wants to “rest” and then he’ll join the team in august. thats a bunch of bs. like i said, being a part of a team is participating whenever the team does stuff. the kid is obviously off the team, end of story. oh and btw, Y, you still haven’t answered my question about university of lincoln avenue, what is that?

  85. 10960

    Iona Power,

I’m just saying that New Rochelle has been on a 3 year streak. It’s only been 3 years since North Rocklands last section championship. North Rockland has won 4 of the last 10 section championships and even went to the dome in 2001. They were in the mix even last season defeating Carmel who defeated New Rochelle 4 weeks prior. They have have gone 32-10 the last 4 years and been a playoff threat. I’d say they’re a bit of a power house in double AA.

  86. 10960

    And What?,

The kid not being there isn’t exactly proof but it’s significant evidence. Unless the kid is not elgible, the door remains open right?? Is the door still open for mcghee?? If not then why not??

  87. fffffffffffffffffffoooooooooootttttttbaaaaaaaaaalllllll

We both agree that North Rockland is a very good program- I am just saying that the program is a little down from previous years.

  89. 3 Yards And A Cloud Of Dust

I think Franco Cuts is Sal Sulla’s agent. He must get a % for everytime his name is mentioned in the paper or the blog. 10960: I have personally spoken to some of the Nyack players (one who is my nephew) who graduated this past year. They all tell me the same things: Ray Nichols is not the leader everyone thinks he is and it is going to be very tough season for them. If they are not prepared, they will get picked off alot. They lost an awful lot of talent and leadership.

  90. Standard Observer

Last season, New Rochelle set up for a short game-winning field goal with two seconds to play. But McGhee, the holder, decided on his own to call a fake. The pass was complete inside the 1, but Monroe-Woodbury made the tackle inches from the goal line to win.
... a quote from the article every1 found that a mystery too something is up with McGhee either very selfish kid or just something wrong with him that play confused everyone…

  91. 3 Yards And A Cloud Of Dust

    10960,

I also know some of the Ramapo coaches. It is the same thing as always with them, will they get the commitement from there players or will they throw in the towel when things get tough which has been there way for the past 5 seasons. They have talent, but have ALWAYS lacked leadership on the field as well as GUTS. North Rockland has indeed slipped a little bit. You no longer see them blowing out there competition as in the past. They are still good enough to win there league, but not good enough to win the section.

  92. go eagles

I have seen Ray Nichols play and he can lead by example on the field. Nyack will be a top 5 class A team. Why would you write otherwise in a public blog? These are HS kids.

Eastchester will also be a top 5 team. Fox Lane outcoached them two years in a row. That needs to change this year.

Rye will be good, but not as good as last year. They are, however, a top 5 team.

Ossining is a no brainer top 5…

Somers and Fox Lane will fight it out for the last spot. I would bet on Somers.

Potown is top 10. They have some good talent, but need to execute. They play Eastchester week 2, so the debate will end then.

Others in the top 10 are Harrison, Lakeland and Roosevelt.

  93. football

Franco cuts. Why do you act/write like you are a 17 year old kid who is still playing HS football? Is their a reason why you refer to your own son as “SAGZ”? You are an adult who owns a business…act like one! And I agree with 3 yards about you being Sula’s agent. Your fascination with his is a little creepy.

  94. Hoops fan

    I have a couple disagreements with Kevin’s Top 10.

    1) I can’t see how you pick New Rochelle #2 unless you are banking on McGhee suiting up this season. New Rochelle lost an awful lot to graduation from last years teams. I could be wrong about this, but it seems to me that New Rochelle’s teams have been on a downward trajectory the last few years in terms of talent. DiRienzo Jr is certainly one of the best defensive players around. Maybe some of the younger guys will step up in the backfield – until then I don’t see them as a pre-season #2 without McGhee.

    2) Rye at #4? Last year when Kevin was ranking all the teams in the area (large and small combined) Rye didn’t make the Top 10. This year they move up to Class A and are automatically #4? Did they get better just by moving up a class? They did lose a decent amount from last year by all accounts. I agree that if Rye has a great season this year they’ll have the opportunity to prove themselves as a Top 5 team in Westchester/Rockland, but until then I think its premature. It Rye comes out of the gates and beats Ossining impressively maybe #4 would be justified. In the pre-season, no way in my opinion. Going into this season I’d pick Carmel, North Rockland, Fordham Prep, Mount and Stepinac ahead of Rye. If Rye beats Ossining and starts out the season on a nice run, I’d re-think those rankings.

  95. patriot

dont forget jjef blowing out ramapo last year twice , dont sleep on the patriots

  96. Hoops fan

    Two other thoughts.

Kevin never seems to rank Mount St Michael appropriately on this blog. Granted, Mount lost a lot to graduation, but in a head to head matchup, I’d say Mount would be the favorites against EVERY team in the top 10 except for Iona and New Rochelle (New Ro/Mount would be a great game/matchup every year).

Stepinac has a very dynamic team this year at the skill positions. I think ranking Stepinac #5 seems very fair to start the year. From everything I’ve heard (from both Stepinac fans and fans of other local schools), Stepinac’s new starting junior QB Tyrell Goodman has as good a combination of height, arm strength and speed of any QB around. Stepinac’s featured back, Caleb Gilligan-Evans, was a significant contributor last year as a freshman in the top league in New York State, which says a lot. Its very, very rare for a freshman to contribute in the CHSFL. Stepinac’s 3rd major offensive weapon is Josh Powell a very athletic TE/DE. I don’t know much about what Stepinac has coming back on their lines and on the defensive side of the ball, but if they can put those things together Stepinac should have an excellent year.

  97. Just a Fact

    10960,

You might need to read what people have put above. This a blog where you give your opinions. Mine are facts of course (just kidding). Ramapo has won nothing despite having the talent at the skill positions. Would that not point to the line? I do not need a roster to confirm my beliefs, but go knock yourself out. I have seen them play. You the type of guy if you do not read it in a book it can not be true? Everyone now with an opinion need rosters of each team or they can not blog? Kevin will really love your idea. It will be you and Iona Power going back and forth with an update from Keith Fagan.

My other two FACTS can only be proven at year end. But for the learning impaired here it is again. New Ro #1 since Coach D does have the Carmel coach in his back pocket. North Rock # 2 since no one (even carmel)except New Ro will be able to match their power. Sulla the first premiere back since Alceus. Does that make you feel better 10960? Good.

  98. IonaPower

    Hoops fan

Your point about Mount St. Michael is very true. Very tough team who gave Iona Prep a scare last year in the Quarterfinals.

Stepinac does have some very good skill position players returning but they did lose some very physical linemen plus the loss of Maurice Easterling is enormous. They did catch a big break by having the CHSFL slot them in the AA after playing a tough AAA schedule last year. Stepinac will have a great regular season and then their toughest matchups will be in the AA playoffs where they will most likely meet one of the 4 teams from the AAA who did not qualify for the AAA playoffs.

Kind of tough on all of us. A little intimidation factor going on here?

    3 yards:

What would you expect them to say? Ray was not the leader of last year’s team and he is a quiet/lead by example kid. The leader’s on last year’s team were strong and a big part of their success. They had leaders on both sides of the ball that demanded everyone play hard. It will take the same kind of effort from multiple players again this year.

Ray will be fine. Listen to his interview with Kevin from last year on the podcasts below.

    Go Eagles

I agree with your assessment of Ray Nichols. He is a quiet leader, who leads by example. I imagine he will be a captain this year and be more vocal.

It always amazes me that people will write negative things about kids on this blog.

I am looking forward to seeing how Eastchester does this year. The poughkeepsie game early in the season may be a good indicator for both teams. Poughkeepsie will be fast.

  102. thetruth

Class B for Westalke stands for Beating!

  103. Standard Observer

I agree ray will be a leader, but he needs support from other leaders to run the show… there arent many who will do that… and also any word on if this fullback is the real deal how did he do when he played at don bosco did he leave b/c of playing time issues or another reason?

  104. 10960

    Just a fact,

Copy and paste for me where on this blog have I said that you can’t have an opinion. Prove that I said that.

North Rockland had Johnny Jean Baptist, Chris Landry and Sal Sulla after Redrick Alceus. We’re talking only 3 season since Alceus Graduated. None of them good as Alceus ofcourse.

As far as Ramapo goes…. You can’t blame the line all these years. Try blaming coach Vitolo for Ramapo’s lack of success. Now that Ramapo has a new head coach, things are changing over there. Vitolo didn’t feature his speedy backs enough yet he was running a speedy offense (wing T). As soon as coach Zotter took over utilizing speedy running backs Ramapo had a 6-1 regular season and won their league.

I also don’t think you should lose to a coach you have in your Pocket. Carmel took it to New Rochelle to open last season. Game could’ve went either way but a Coach D championship sqaud lost to Carmel.

I also never heard of facts that cant be proven right away.

    Wing T Guy,

    Not trying to intimidate LOL.

  106. Just a Fact

10960, you off the meds? Me and others stated our opinions and you asked specific questions as to if we new the teams roster and the such. Weren’t your questions insuating if we did not know the teams rosters we could not express our opinion? That is what I took from it and I am sure others as well.

Up till now I thought you knew something about football, it is in question at this point if you think Landry and Baptiste are quality North Rockland running backs. Maybe they would have been considered good at South or North, but not North Rockland. I base this on watching both play. Is that good enough for you are you want stats as well? Based on what others have been writing I will assume Sulla is on the level.

Yes I will put blame on the Ramapo line. From what I have heard and seen Vitolo coach and was not as bad as you just made him out to be, but on his behalf, I will say OUCH! Your comments sound personal. Question for you. Do you really think Ramapo wins the league last year if North Rockland has a team such as their 2006 ( I won’t even put thier 2005 team)team? Last year was a down year(2007 too) for North Rockland. That league could have been the worst in AA. Won’t happen this year. Ramapo is playing for second in that division and that is only because I have not heard antyhing good about South.

I will call Carmel’s win over New Ro a fluke. But like I said before I will let this season prove me right or wrong.

    What did you prove wrong?

  110. Huskies Forever

Harrison might surprise everyone this season.Very underrated. They are young, but they’ll play competitive ball,as long as there’s no injuries.Last season, injuries knocked them out of the box.If they could come up with a couple of really good running backs, they’ll be in the game.Rye is very overrated going into the opener. They’ll be playing against tough A competition, not the cream puff walk overs they played against last season in Section 1.If they make it anywhere near Kingston,I’ll tip my hat to them…..

  111. JP

thats a big if. its hard getting just “a couple of really good running backs”

  112. Just a Fan

    Hoops fan-

Great point about Rye not being in the Top 10 last year. Rye’s team at the end of last year was clearly better than this team at the beginning of the year. So Kevin how does Rye jump all the way to #4? They did lose the heart and sole of the this team over the last 4 years in Ramalho sp?? Are you saying there is that much of a drop off in Class A and AA that Rye jumped so much.

I know you want to win every game but I agree with previous bloggers whoever loses the Rye vs Ossining game might just end up winning the more important playoff game. A little revenge goes a long way.

Personally, I don’t think Rye winning over Ossining will send any message. I asked that question to the three or four posters that suggested an Ossining win would send a message to Rye. I have been reading how Rye beat up the “little guys”....you know I never knock Harrison, but lot’s of them have given Rye tougher games recently than has Harrison. Sme of these little guys include Sleepy Hollow, Byram Hills, Plesantville, Chinango Forks and Oneida. Yes, there have been some cream puffs along the way in B, but can anyone deny the existance of cream puffs in A too? I keep reading the word “program” like we are talking about Michigan and USC. Private schools can have some semblence of a “program”. Whether they recruit actively or not or admit it or not, they have the wherewithall to bring kids in to play sports. About a decade ago I met former NY Jet/Redskin Rich Castor, who then was the “minority recruitter” at Rye Country Day. It’s not an accident that most of the minority kids recruitted were big offensive tackles, running backs, point guards and power forwards. He was bringing kids in from as far away as Long Island. A few years ago Rye Quaterback Marc Saracino, who was one of Westchester’s all time great throwing QB’s was offered a scholarship and turned it down.In most cases if someone is offered a RCDS education…they would be crazy to turn it down. If RCDS wants to be better than a Rye or Harrison or even a New Rochelle…they can do it…it may take a little time, but we are kidding ourselves if we don’t think a “program” can beat a High School football team that ,for the most part, plays with the local yocal kids. Winning breeds winning at the schools like New Rochelle, Rye, Dobbs and Harrison. The secret at these schools is that almost every kid in places like this(and I didn’t name them all)is the great participation levels and history. Last year Rye dressed almost 50 kids for varsity, 40 for JV, 30 for the 9th grade team and about 100 for the two modified teams (7th and 8th grade). Yes, Dino Garr is a great coach and he has a great staff, but these unbelievable numbers are the #1 reason Rye keeps winning. Over 50% of the Rye boys play football at sometime between 7th and 12th grade. These kids live to play a friday night game in front of the usual 1500-2000 people that regularly attend and of course the thrill of playing against our Harrison neighbors. Last year the 7th grade, JV and varsity were un-defeated and the 8th graders lost one game. Several of these non-varsity games and wins came against AA and A schools. This may sound like a “program” but again the history , tradition and the desire to keep a good thing going are the reasons Rye has been so good. I’m going out on a limb and predicting that Rye will win a Section 1 Class A championship in the near future. If this happens it will send a message that Rye will become the 1st team to win A, B and C championships…a feat that may never be matched. Anyone who thinks Rye is over-rated may be in for a very very big surprise.

  124. Jim

    Also to the Harrison guys…

I firmly believe “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”. Rye has been on the other end of this rivalry. I think the “Sammy” teams and your 90’s dominance over Rye directly led to this recent Rye run. I don’t know about this year…but Harrison will bounce back soon justlike Rye did…after getting their noses rubbed in the dirt for a while they fought their way to the top…I rue that day, but I know it’s gotta happen.

  125. Futbol

I agree with Jim about the program vs. high school football teams. Iona’s already done it, they would dominate any section 1 football team. Who’s to say RCDS couldnt do it, am i the only one who noticed RCDS’s 07-08 football team was monstrous. I am a garnet fan, but also a RCD fan and watched that team play. The line was enormous, the backs quick and fast, and a big QB.

  126. 10960

    Jim,

That was beautiful. EVERYONE should read your post.

class doesn’t matter as every class has cup cake teams.

Harrison moved up to class A and was a dominant power. Nobody in class A was stopping them accept for “Class B” Rye.

    Remember that??

    Jim,

That was an excellent post. I read it twice!!

  127. 10960

Jim I’m going to copy and save your post…. that was crazy good I just read it a third time LOL. Very good post

  129. patriot

how will cross river be this year

  130. IonaPower

I think this is the perfect year for Rye to move into Class A. When you look at Class A this year you see a lot of evenly matched good teams. Last year would have been a much harder transition because you had some special teams last year when you look at Nyack, Ossining and Somers. Most would agree that this years version of all three might at this time be a little weaker than last year. The major riddle will be what team emerges as that special group. It could be Eastchester, Rye, Ossining, Nyack, or maybe Harrison.

  131. Huskies Forever

Jim,the word you’re looking for is “mean reversion”....

  132. BIG JOE

AS A HUSKY FAN, I HAVE NEVER THOUGHT THAT HARRISON COULD HAVE A BAD YEAR, AN IT APPEARS THAT THE PROS. HERE ON THIS BLOG ARE PREDICTING THAT THIS YEAR WILL BE ONE, EVERY YEAR FOR THE MANY 35 YEARS I HAVE FAVORED THEM , THEY SEEM TO SURPRISE THE CRITICS,.... MY SON TELLS ME THAT HARRISON HAS A VERY BIG OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE LINE,AND DEFENSE WINS GAMES,..IF HARRISON HAS THAT EXCITING SHORT , FAST RUNNER ,I THINK HIS NAME IS ROCCO,...THE TEAM COULD BE GREAT,...WISHFUL THINKING ,,..LETS PRAY

croton – I was saying cause with three teams representing westchester only a handful of parents came to support their kids. And some of kids didnt look like they gave their best effort. Big Joe – you love Iona Prep deep down inside. I feel you on that.

  136. Jim

    Big Joe

A “bad” year for Harrison is 5-4 or 6-3. There are places where they have parades for 6-3 teams. No one stays #1 forever. Does being the 6th or 7th rated team out of 20 in the pre-season make Harrison a bad bet to have a big year? No. Would it be a major surprise if they got it together and won Class A? Yes.Harrison has some very talented players this year…Knox…Alvora…Rinaldi and Bonistall…are a solid base…Who is the QB? And will the Huskies have depth?

  137. Coach Darlos

this is going to be a exciting hs season. new faces in new places. new rivals. new positions. new agenda. new coaches. new fans. new stadiums. new smiles and new frowns. some happy faces some sad. but at the off the season we will know whos #1. hs football is best and puriest game on earth. go westechester football. and thanks to kids that playing this game. we will enjoy ur success and your failures.

  138. Huskies Forever

Harrison always brings something to the table.Yes,they have some new up & coming talent. The running game is the key.Anyone who can’t figure that out is clueless.Dan Formisano is the QB…....

  139. The donald

    Coach Darlos,

You need to cut the parents some slack on that one. It’s a 7 v 7 passing camp in the middle of the summer. As much as we all like football, I’m sure there were other things to be done. Its a problem if it’s a game during the regualar season. It’s all about time management.

  140. The donald

    Big Joe,

10960, thanks for admitting you were wrong. It takes a big(or a small) man to admit it. I see by reading Jim’s post all posts are good IN YOUR MIND of course if you AGREE with the post. You are real intelligent. lol.

“You can have an opinion such as long as you can support it”. This goes back to what I said previously. A blog is about putting down your opinion. One’s opinion are based on a lot of things. Yes, stats and rosters if handy. And of course from experience as well, which inlcudes what you see and (I am sure this does not apply to you, since being water boy for Nyack does not count as actually playing) if you played. Since most of us played we do not need something to be written down for us to have good football sense. You on the other hand are lacking very much.

how is the playoff system going to be done this year last year was a mess nyack got put on the road to harrison first game when they werent even supposed to be in the playoffs!!?

  149. The donald

    Observer,

Not really sure if playing on the road makes a differnce in High School Football. The playoff system needs to be tweaked though

  150. section1qb

curious as to why you guys choose pleasantville over sleepy hollow next season?
they beat them pretty bad in the 7 on 7 scrimmage and have their entire backfield returning.
and no one mentions rb bobby smalls that was all section in class A last year and should cause problems for teams this year

  151. hahaha

Maybe cause sleepy isnt going to be good this year thats why he put you guys second and you guys dont even deserve to be at that spot in the first place.

  152. Nyack Fan

    The Donald

Playing on the road is a disadvantage in no matter what level you play, especially since nyack has the edge in almost every game they play cause of there devoted fans showing up at every game no matter where it is but its a disadvantage to play on the road, especially in the playoffs..anything can happen

  153. BIG JOE

JIM YOUR POST ARE SINCERE AND NICE TO READ, I HAVE ALWAYS ADMIRED THE RYE SCHOOL SYSTEM AND MANY OF THE RYE PLAYER PARENTS AND I KNOW EACH OTHER VERY, VERY WELL , MAINLY THROUGH THE WESTCHESTER COUNTRY CLUB,THESE KIDS COME FROM FAMILIES THAT COULD SEND THEM ANYWHERE WITH OUT WORRYING ABOUT COSTS, AND YET THEY ALL GO TO RYE, YOU ALWAYS HEAR IN THE REALESTAE BUSINESS—” HOWS THE SCHOOL SYSTEM ”, WELL THE PEOPLE IN RYE PAY BIG TAXES (35-40,000 per year) but than they have a school system to be proud of, HARRISON SCHOOLS HAVE MADE GREAT PROGRESS THE PAST 10 YEARS AND YOU WILL NOTE THE GREATER ATTENDANCES. MUSLES MARRINARA, BIG AUGIE , LITTLE AUGIE ,JOEY BAG A DONUTS, DONT EXIST ANY-MORE,... A LITTLE JOKE FOR THE END …BIG JOE

  154. section1qb

and why is that? they did pretty well in A last year despite having alot less people than most schools.

  157. 10960

I wonder how that Scrimmage at North Rockland went today. Since it Rained. Ramapo was there and spring valley as well. atleast if it even happened!!!

  158. Section 1 Guy

Ok, New Ro is going to runnaway with AA. Why do I say that? They have the best coaches and best team top to bottom. They own their biggest competition in North Rockland, and whoever comes out of the North (where the rest of the competition lays) is going to be so beat up from their own brutal conference and won’t be able to compete unless fully healthy, just look at what happened to Mahopac and Carmel in the playoffs last year.

Surprise teams this year? Mahoapc. Don’t be surprised if they make a run at AA North. They are stacked in the backfield and have a ton of talent. IF, and this is a big IF, if the O-line holds up, they are going to shock Section 1. They might not win the North, but they could ruin a team’s season.

Surpise Bust- Carmel. For all the praise Shilling gets, he was at his best when he was a Sophmore, when he had a great recieving core that no longer exists. Not to mention he no longer has he secrurity blanket in his great O-line.

Dark Horse- Arlington. A team that usually gets beat to piss in AA North, now finally has a great class of seniors, and a lot of young talent. Combine Arlington’s now very good team with the rest of AA North not being at their best, and they are my pick at winning the North.

For everyone’s opinions on these blogs, ask the local seniors of your town’s team who they think are the best. The players usually have the best insight on what teams are actually the best.

  159. Spoon Man

A team I think that is getting overlooked is John Jay East Fishkill. I think they graduate a lot at the skill positions but according to their website their JV team only had 1 loss and I agree with section 1 guy,I think Carmel may have a bust year. Just thought i’d put that out there

  160. hahaha

i guess you call pretty good getting beat by ossining 40- 3

  161. John Malone

I did not post the Section1Guy post, just an FYI.

    Ha,Ha,Ha,

I have two words. Nyack Indians.

  163. Nick

    AA North Prediction:
1st: JJEF Have to go with reigning champ.
2nd: Carmel Have some holes to fill, but O-line will be good again.
3rd: Arlington Break out year for Dematteo and the program.
4th: Ketchum Those kids are tough!
5th: JJCR Will get beat up but squeek past the Pac.
6th: Mahopac Tough year for the Pac, some talent…but will fall short often.

  164. haha

    section1guy:
you say new rochelle will run away with the aa this year – wow it must of taken you a long time to figure that one out – what, did their joke of a schedule give it away???

  165. 10960

someones killing the Section1Guy Name big time.

  166. Bobby D

Ossining will have a major headache after facing a Dino Garr gameplan. Every year, these “bigger, faster, better” teams, all say that they are going to beat Rye…and what happens? they leave losers holding their jockstraps with only their big mouths to feel half way decent about. Rye won’t lose this opener, their section 1 win streak will not be snapped, and Rye will have Dino to thank for a perfect gameplan that this rock soluid team will execute to a “T”. Nobody outsmarts Garr on a football field.

  167. 92 Husky

Wing-T Guy – What are you doing? Keeping stats on blogs! I havnt been on here in weeks, get a life.

  168. section 1

    section 1 guy,

i agree that arlington will be a sleeper in aa north but how could you say shilling was at his best as a sophomore. yes he did have a lot more passing yards but he showed he was more versatile last year gaining over 500 yards on the ground and 1200 yards passing. john jay ef has lost a lot of talent but they have great coaching and a stud in the back field, kyle taylor, who was injured last year. i believe aa north is wide open where any team could possibly win it. there is no dominant team in the league but it seems the league will have a lot of depth this year.

  169. Navajos, Throgs Neck

    Huskies Forever,

Dan Formisano is my pick to start at Q.B. as well,as soon as the rest seperate. They do have a talented offensive and defensive line, and the key,-as always,-is the Harrison backfield. It is quick and some like Knox are big.
B.Vacarro and Rinaldi at the defensive ends could work out well as long as Vacarro keeps hitting the weights.Right B.?

P.S. Prayers and well wishes to Art Troilo Jr. Get well soon Art.

    Navajos, Throggs Neck
P.S. It’s a brand new ball game this year it all depends on heart and soul.

  170. Trundle

Harrison’s QB will be dan formisano, who needs to improve in a few areas, but should be solid, but nothing special. The line should be solid, not great, but solid, with some decent size and skill. The backs are once again solid, with nothing too special back there. I do like Vacarro and Rinaldi at ends, Vaccaro is about 5’9, but packs some serious muscle, hes huge. Rinaldi is a lean, muscular 6’3 DE.

  180. 10960

Looks like Iona had some solid seasons but 2008 is by far the best on that list…. best record….. but was 2008 the best team??

  181. IonaPower

    10960

The 2005 team that lost in the CHSFL AAA championship game to St. Anthony would have given the 2008 team a tussle-

I have been told the 1967 and 1971 teams were excellent-

The 1987 team that lost in the CHSFL AAA semifinals to Mount St. Michael was also excellent.

I believe this years team has as much talent as last year but the schedule is brutal so I can see Iona with a few losses but I can also see them winning the CHSFL AAA championship again. This year Iona and St. Anthony are probably the top 2 but then after that teams from 3-9 are all very good. When you see a team like Mount St. Michael seeded # 9 you know it is a balanced and rough league.

Here is the Iona Prep schedule

Sat Sept 5. 10.00am Scrimmage at Greenwich
FRI Sept 11 8.30pm Bergen Catholic at the Meadowlands
SAT Sept 19 1.30pm Holy Cross (Home)
Sat Sept 26 1.3opm Chaminade (Home)
FRI OCT 2 7.30pm Xaverian (Road)
SAT OCT 10 7.00pm St Anthony (Road)
Sat Oct 17 1.30pm Holy Trinity (Road)
Sat OCT 24 1.30pm St. Joseph (Road)
SAt OCT 31 1.30 pm Farrell (Home)

The two hardest teams on the schedule would be Bergen Catholic and St. Anthony- The St. Anthony game is a league game at their place which is a tough venue- If you don’t mind the drive that is the best game.

Farrell, Holy Cross and Chaminade will all be tough games for Iona at home- To give you an idea of how the CHSFL views the teams this is the preaseason power ratings in the league.

  186. IonaPower

    10960

You know that I always keep it real- Iona could very well have 2-3 losses going into the playoffs-

Try and watch St. Joseph by the Sea from Staten Island- They are the most brutal team to play as they are dirty with all the cut blocking- They run the old single wing.

  187. nick

Arlington 5th? No way. If it was a horse race I would box the trifecta with JJEF,Arlington, and Carmel. Some of the teams in AA North will not be as good as they were last year, combine that with an Arlington program on the rise – and you have a breakout year for Arlington.

It would be interesting to see if we could get all the informed bloggers on here to write mini-scouting reports for his/her local team. Answers to questions like: what are the base offensive and defensive schemes, what are the strengths and weaknesses of each unit (I know its not even preseason, but a lot of people here already have opinions), who are players to watch, etc.

If we can get 10-15 write-ups, it would provide great color for bloggers who are going to watch multiple games this season.

  193. big joe

does anyone know anything about brewsters football team …..i watched them last year vs greeley and i was impressed by the huge crowd that showed up….there were thousands of fans watching…wow , thats good fan support

  194. Section 1 Guy

JJEF graduated all of their talent, there is no way they are going to be what they were last year. Then again, they have the Best Coach in the North, so theres no telling what can happen. My guess is though, they will have to wait till next year.

As far as Carmel goes, Shilling is a stud, but he just lost his O-line and has no good recievers that I’ve ever heard of. He’s going to have to carry Carmel if they are going to win because he has little help.

Ketchum has been quite a joke for the last few years. I remeber them supposedly being the favorites out of the North in 2006, then they faultered and got embarressed by an undersized Mahopac team at their Homecoming.

Mahopac is depleted at O-Line after graduating a good class, but their backfeild is crazy and deep, which is good because they’re going to need depth with the injuries that are bound to happen. Not to mention, Dillion Adinizio, who is only a junior, is a stud, and the second coming of Justin Autera. You heard it here first.

Arlington might have their best team in the past 10 years. They are returning a massive amount of players and starters, and should take advantage of a weaker division than normal.

JJCR might be in trouble, they are stepping into the toughest division in section 1 with one of their weakest teams in years. They have some great atheletes, but few Football players. You never know with Jay though, because they have some of biggest cometitors at that school.

And just a quick question for all of you bloggers. How many of you have actually played in Section 1 in the past 5 years? Because, as I said before, it’s the PLAYERS, that know what they are talking about, because it is they who study film and actually play the game. I find it funny when fans blog and act like they know what they are talking about.

Just when did we open this blog up to Malocchios from The Bronx?
What is the rub with Artie? Did he finally get his back fixed up? Is there anything seriously wrong? Did he get hurt fixing up the Harrison Football Apartment?
Hey, Big Joe, just who will be transfering into Harrison to star this season?
Any running backs move into town from Pelham, or Rye or possibly Post Chester or Florida?
Just a thought. Big O line, Big D line. There is nothing new there, Harrison always has big lines. Better football through constant lifting and training, etc….

What should we expect out of champion camp this week at new rochelle high school.

NEW ROCHELLE: will the John McGee distraction still continue or can coach D move ahead and get down to what he does best prepare his team for the up coming season.

HARRISON: Has alot of questions that need to be answered
who starts at QB and outside of Tanner Knox were is the production on offense coming from. Does Artie continue to stay in that react defenese or get more aggresive and blitz
they have their work cut out for them!

Roosevelt: Has two good running backs but can they find Offense line help. It appears that the numbers will be sown as usual and force kids to be on the field all game. Moving down to A from AA should help. Could be a sleeper come playoff time.

Eastchester: Can they repeat as three time champs in their league moving up to A, with Rye in the mix things might change. Most of thier proven talent is in the line with three startes returning for there senior season. Look for the offense to be carried by Bronner (TB) Martin (FB) and
Reina (HB) to carry the load along with DiCarlo(QB) to run
the mid line option. Time will tell!

    Section 1 Guy,

You are doing the real John Malone a disservice posting under his traditional screen name..John wasnt a player nor is Kevin nor folks like Wing T guy and the like but they are informed and for the most part try to provide some objectivity. In terms of best AA North coach Id argue the Brian Walsh point..Carmels Coach Cayea has the best career winning percentage despite Coach Walshs longevity and defeated JJEF with what has been there best team in memory without Chris Watkins and many of their top lineman to advance to play NewRo a team they had defeated week 1… Carmel returns Shilling and underrated RJ Kraus at TB who had over 200 yards rushing in thei game against Mahopac.Arlington does return their QB Loussedre a starter since his sophomore year and some other talented players..JJJEF gets Kyle Taylor back from injury and a boatload of talent up from a JV group thats lost 1 game going into their junior year. Ketcham returns a few impressive backs and likely the top lineman in the Section in Zack Jones 6’6” 320 who has already committed to Buffalo and Ketcham always hits in good and bad years. Mahopac lost a ton in Tyler Perrelle, Autera, Senatore and Tim Tapps in the backfield so Id be surprised if thats an area of strength this year…very tough to count on kids who got little to no look as juniors or sophomores or a kid coming up from JV. In terms of Addonizio Ive only seen him once and he played sparingly ine the backfield from what I saw and can tell you he looks like he’ll be a nice player..but its a huge stretch to mention him in the same breath as Autera. JJCR has a host of lax athletes and another Pickel whos a QB..not sure what their line situation is as they were in A so didnt hear or see from them last year. Frankly I think the league is wide open and depth, and getting out of the gates quick will be important..the champ will likely be undefeated with #2 at 1 loss and a log jam after that..not sure how the playoffs work if they could get 3 teams in or not..maybe someone knows the format??

  199. Just a Fact

    Section 1 Guy

As an older timer, I agree with your assessment. Football players know more football then the fans, but please you are only going back 5 years. There are a lot of guys on this blog that played a long time ago. Playing football and watching film is not the criteria to knowing football. You actually HAD TO BE A GOOD PLAYER AS WELL! Maybe this applies to you, maybe it does not. Not to mention some of us old timers played in college. You?

So when I say Arlington will finish 5th, just watch and weep. Their coach has won and proven nothing. Arlington players are not used to winning. AA North is one of the most competitive leagues, but even their best will be playing for third place this year. This is not earth shattering, but New Ro 1, North Rock 2( if Sulla is a true beast switch 1 & 2) and Carmel 3.

  200. Class B fan

There are more than just one team in class B that can make a run of course Sleepy Hollow will think just because Rye moved up to Class A they will runaway with the section but just because a team like Sleepy Hollow moves up to class A for a year and gets it’s butt handed to them what makes anyone think it won’t happen in B as well there are some good strong programs that know how to beat teams like Sleepy hollow.Nanuet, lordes, Edgemont, pleasantville and there is alweays a sleeper team to just pop up so Sleepy fans it could be a lot harder than you think in B remember you never beat Rye when they were in class B so it should be A dog for all the teams in the class come to think of it Rye is your cross over game this year and the last time you beat Rye was like in the late 80’s early 90’s I think the section title game will be Lordes vs Edgemont

  201. 10960

where’s John Malone AKA section 1 guy when you need him.

  202. dutchessFBfan

    Section 1 Guy,

Well said…I hate when a kid or parent or gasp…a coach blogs to hype a kid or program…we’ve all seen it before..lets be objective here…like you and some of the old timers…like Joe and others we have stayed in touch but have perspective from having done it as well…if you dont have perspective…what do you have..its like the discussion of best backs ever…fun yes but futile…how bout Wayne Charles of WP who went to Duke on a full ride..or Ronnie Edwards for that matter ( Northwestern)Roy Colsey( Yorktown)..better known for lax..Markell Granderson (Indiana)and James Atkins(Central State) and Jimmy Kennedy( Penn State) of Roosevelt…the Russos from Mahopac(Penn Stae & Texas El Paso)..Mark Catano from Hen Hud( Steelers)Rich Erenberg from Scarsdale who went to Colgate and the the Steelers…been around a long time and dont claim to know it all but do follow th eteams where I live…POK is freakish with 2 wonderful RB’s..more impressive in my mind than Frank..no disrespect but just very small…seems like people have delusions of granduier(SP?) when it comes to this stuff…I saw Sammy(Harrison, Ohio State, Maryland) and Ray(New Ro, Rutgers) and Jim Caan(Rutgers…not sure if NFL?) and watched Harold Gayden(CUSE) run for 400+ and 7 tds and lose vs Lourdes for that matter and I hope someone backs me up…Sammy based on pure talent is the best Ive seen. Harold was number 2 and Ray, Jimmy Caan, Derrick Lassick(North Rock,Bama, Cowboys),Greg Morra( JJCR,Mahopac, Texas El Paso) and Cameron Williams( North Rock) are ahead of all others..just for giggles Scott Rowe and Leggie Beckford werent too bad for the um Riverhawks??I know I misssed Chris Hughley of Tulsa and MV and maybe some more but Im doing my best…how bout we throw out Artie…like him or not he was Sammy before Sammy was Sammy and had a fine career at Fordham…...and laughably his dad was Artie before Artie and may have been better….my old time obscure picks are Joe Holland of Roosevelt..I believe Harvard and Congress, Chuck Piebes of Westlake to Purdue as Bob Grieses backup and now an offical, and the Taylor twins from JJCR in 1972..look it up but they were unreal and for that time in a league of their own..I think one was Allan and not sure of the other…let me know what you think??

  204. Class B fan

I agree with you But Gayden was probly the best back I have ever seen in section 1 Sammy only played hard on Offense and took plays off on defense were Gayden played he played full speed all the time but great list section 1 guy

  205. Class B fan

    sorry I ment dutchessFBfan

  206. Kickoff 09

I played against Gayden while at EHS, you talk abou Sammy M. being a man child this guy was just as big. I can remember coach k coming on the bus and saying “GAYDEN HAS LEGS LIKE EARL CAMPBELL” how is that for a statement before a game inwhich EHS pulled off an upset in (1981) 15-14. Gayden was shredding the yardage up that year, and YES he did rush for 404 yards in a bowl game lose. He ran hard and always punished the defense.

  207. The Donald

    Class B Fan.

I can assure you Sleepy has not even mentioned running away with class B. They all know it’s going to be a fight to the finish. They are very motiveated and focused on the season.
As far as getting thier ass handed to them in A. If you consider losing to Nyack, Ossining and Eastchester, all seinor loaded teams last year. Then so be it. By the way, check thier combined records from last year. All top tier teams.
Lourdes and Edgemont are good picks.. The first week will be interesting. Lourdes at Sleepy, Edgemont at Pville.
As far as your comment they havn’t beat Rye. Name me a team in class B that has?

  208. Kickoff 09

    Class B Fan,

Don’t sleep on Edgemont and Pleasantville they are the pre seasom favorites to take class b. Sleepy will get out coached in the big games. Bory’s needs to be better prepared this year, his game calling is suspect at best!

  209. class b guy

honestly I think that first week pleasantville is going to kill edgemont. Pleasantville just says too strong of a offensive line and defense. There offense is a little unproven but their defense should keep them in games when the offense isnt clicking

  210. class b talker

I personally think sleepy would have beaten lourdes last year and they(sleepy) have potential to be a better team this year.

stating that they got there butts kicked in A is an overstatement. they had the two section finalists in their division, and played eastchester very tough. the match up against ossining is barely a fair one when you consider amount of kids in their schools.

they have an all section class A running back and the rest of their backfield returning along with some new weapons and coaches. im sure it will be a battle for the title but i think sleep has a great shot this year.

  211. dutchessFBfan

    Everyone,

I do agree Harold Gayden was at least as good as Sammy…yes he lost in a 400+ performance vs Lourdes but was really incredible..like Sammy was …..sorry Rye people…so who was better Sammy or Harold..The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow as hes known….even Tevor Dimmie was second rate…so as bloggers blog lets have a sense of perspective…Gayden was clearly in a class of his own…and the best back to play in whats now Sec 1//Wes,Put,Rock, Dutchess

  212. class b talker

agreed on gayden, the man was simply amazing.

  213. eagle power

I’m afraid all this hype about eastchester is not so. Eastchester will be competitive, but will finish five hundred at best. The coaches will tell you the same thing. They lack the mental toughness for the big three games, and really don’t have a stable line. Their speed is average and they have a very weak secondary. It will be a frustrating season.

  214. Navajos, Throgs Neck

    Man In The Stands,

I was born in the Bronx but have lived in Harrison for thirty years. Where does Man In The Stand Live? It wasn’t Art’s back but he is out of the hospital, doing better. And we in Harrison havn’t imported anyone to play for us.Not from Rye,or Pelham, or Florida. Not even from Throggs Neck. The entire team is home grown.
Just thought I would field that question for Big Joe he has a lot on his plate. I played for a team in the Bronx, called the Navajos. Can we get back to Westchester now?

Don’t wanna do odds because it looks bad…. Just win/loss. Kinda like what they do on inside the NFL.

  219. John Malone

If I do anything like that, it’ll be with http://www.Section1Recruiting.com still. I’m working on possibly watching games on film during my off days because I’m still going to be working on Fri/Sat. We’ll see how it goes. I definitely missed it last year.

  220. Hoops fan

    Dutchessfbfan,
You bring up some great names. I agree Gayden is right up there with Maldonado. Whatever happened to the Taylor twins from John Jay (Bruce and Allen I think)? Did they ever play any football in college. Markell Granderson is a great name from Roosevelt. Chilli McAllister is another great player who played for Dematteo. Atkins and Kennedy I think were the only Roosevelt players to make it to the NFL and they both came at the end of Dematteo’s tenure there. Dematteo sure had some other great football players in his earlier years – many of the names I’m forgetting.

  221. Rileygirl

Dutchessfbfan. I love your lists and knowledge. I was at the Gayden , Lourdes game myself and as you know if it werent for outside infleunces, Hollow wins. I have probably seen the best backs the past 25+ years and my best would be Sammy. Followed by Ray and Gayden. Obviously Ray will have the best impact at the next level , however, as you said Sammys talent was limitless. He did it all at the high school level and had things not fallen apart with injuries/coaching changes theres no doubt that he could have been an Eddie George type back.An unnamed player from NRoc was Marcus LArkins( welcome home). He was tremendous. Bernstein was tough as well.
Im glad that you mentioned the Ossining kids, that ‘91 team would have won states had section one been able to play. Leggie ( RIP ) went to NFL camps, Rowe was a guerilla and I think their QB went to Va for lax ( Dixon). Another name that comes to mind was Jermaine Blackwell. He was twice the Reporters Dispatch player of the year. Great, great back. How about another UTEP player, Vic Stagglaino. He made the Riaders pracitice squad

  222. not garnet fan

speaking of ossinnig there gunna be horrible next year. just watch

  223. Hoops fan

    Rileygirl,
You really know your stuff as well. I didn’t know or didn’t remember that Jermaine Blackwell was the the Reporter Dispatch Player of the Year twice. Where did Blackwell, Larkins or Rowe play in college?

You bring up an interesting point about all the local guys from the early 80’s who ended up at UTEP. Besides John Harvey (Spring Valley), I can think of Tony Russo (Mahopac), Marcy McKenna (Stepinac), Morra from John Jay, McEsker (Mahopac), Stagliano (from Westlake, right?), among others. Do you know what the connection was? Was there an assistant coach at UTEP from the area?

  224. 10960

What team beat JJEF’S J.V. last year?

  226. The donald

    10960,

I have no idea what happens outside section 1. LOL

What do I know anyway. I still think the regular season should be 10 games with the two best teams playing for the section championship. Schedule 8 leauge games and two with whoever you want no matter what class they are in. Then get on with the winter sports.

  227. Rileygirl

Peter King gives Ray a lot of props in this weeks CNNSI. (mmqb)Saying that he thinks he’s gonna start. I know Rowe went to Southern Conn, Blackwell played at Westchester a bit and Larkins has had issues that I would rather someone else bring up. That Dobbs team also had a young Curtis Brown and Eric Gordon . Gordon went to Colgate I believe after Hackley and Brown could have at least been a great D2 back. Like Freeman from Peekskill( who will be in NFL camps)

  228. go eagles

Yeah, I don’t even think Eastchester should show up. I don’t think they will win a game. Geez, returning most of their starters means absolutley nothing.

    Can’t wait for baseball season.

  229. section1 fan

Eastchester will be a solid team this year. Watch as they can role through there competion this week at champions camp

  230. Hoops fan

    Rileygirl,
I somehow forgot one of the greatest players ever from this area discussing local guys who ended up at UTEP – Seth Joyner from Spring Valley – I never saw him play at Spring Valley, but I certainly saw him many times playing for the Eagles. Another guy I thought of who ended up at UTEP was Randy Forrest from New Rochelle. It would be interesting to know what the connection was.

    Try here http://sportspakdb.lhric.org/mainindex.asp

According to the BOCES site, the Rye/Harrison game is on October 17th 2pm at Harrison.

  233. 10960

    The donald,

a 10 game season would be nice. That would be great but as we all know, education comes first. The actual season would have to start in August if that were the case.

  234. 10960

    hoops fan,

Good point on Seth Joyner. I personaly think he’s the best football player regardless of position to ever come out of the entire hudson vlley region. At one point he was the highest paid linebacker in the NFL playing for the Arizona cardinals. 3 time pro bowl selection and 1 time superbowl champion. Spring Valley High School alumn.

  235. Hoops fan

    10960,
You bring up a great debate. I would have to go with Art Monk since he’s in the Hall of Fame as the greatest player ever from the Westchester/Rockland area. Keith Bulluck would also be up there among several others. I think Paul Costa from Portchester and Roger Brown from Nyack were also All-Pro’s in their days as well.

  236. 10960

    Hoops Fan,

Rodger Brown, 7 time pro bowl selection 2 time all pro!!!

But that was way way back….. okay okay….. Modern day from 80’s till now. LOL

Otherwise there’s no debate, I simply lost LOL

Brown was so close to being an NFL hall of Famer!!!

    Hoops Fan,

    I’m very impressed

  237. 10960

    Hoops Fan,

Ya know what, I’m gonna say top 5 with Seth Joyner. I knew little about Art Monk till I just looked him up. You just opened my eyes.

Not bad for the lower Hudson Valley Right?

  238. Hoops fan

Another guy who had a great NFL career from Rockland was Blaise Winter who I think went to Tappan Zee and played at Syracuse. I hope Roger Brown does make the Hall of Fame this year. There was a nice article about him earlier this year in the Journal News. Tre Johnson from Peekskill had a long NFL career, he may have been a pro bowler a couple seasons with the Redskins in the 90’s. Dave Costa (Saunders), George Starke (New Rochelle) and Bob Hyland (Stepinac) who had long NFL careers in the 60’s and 70’s.

Art Monk was tremendous at Syracuse but from what he did at WPHS I wouldn’t have picked him out as a future Hall of Famer. WPHS has had so many great running backs its hard to figure out who was the best in high school.

  239. The donald

    10960,

Not if you eliminate the state playoffs, like NYC and Long Island. End it at the section championship. Have some fun in the regular season. Bring back the rivalries and add some new ones. Nyack and North Rockland for example. we put to much emphasis on playoffs and not enough on regular season.

  240. dutchessFBfan

    Ive been remiss,

Lets add UTEP great John Harvey(SV) Buccaneers, Joe McKesker(Mahopac) Chargers 6th round) Dave Toub (Mahopac) 6th round Eagles and now Bears special teams coach. And Rob Pufahl-(Roosevelt), Keith Lipscomb(Gorton), Greg Morra(Mahopac), Jim Quercetti(Mahopac)Matt Leone (Mahopac),Rob Manfredonia(Mahopac)( also a DE from Somers who I forget)...that goes with Vic Stagliano of Westlake, Tony Russo(FA Browns) of Mahopac, Marcy McKenna of Stepinac..there was a time that the WAC conference champs had 4 starters from section 1 in Toub, Pufahl, Russo and McKesker in 85 on their O line….The hook was former WCC coach Max Bowman..a longtime Westchester insider..maybe theres talenT here after all???

  241. Hoops fan

    dutchessfbfan,
You have a great memory. I don’t remember some of those names, but I’m shocked/impressed with the amount of players from Section 1 that played at UTEP in the 80’s, particularly the amount of players from Mahopac. Did you go to Mahopac or just know a lot about their program?

Its amazing to me how so many 1A players came out of Section 1 during the 80’s, yet now it seems there isn’t even one 1A player each year (with the exception of a couple of New Rochelle’s great teams a few years ago which were loaded). How did Section 1 (or New York State in general) far so far behind in a matter of years?

  242. HSfootballFan

    DutchessFBfan,

I have heard a bit about Arlington’s QB being pretty good, but what else do they have returning? There seems to be some hype surrounding their program this year. It’s only a matter of time before a school with 2000 boys can become a contender.

  243. Spoon Man

I agree with HSfootballFan, I want to know why there is so much hype surrounding Arlingotn…?

  244. Nick

Some of the hype is due to Arlington’s sheer size – Arlington projects to have 3525 students in the HS this coming year. I know that doesn’t always translate directly into winning seasons, but it often helps.

  245. Rileygirl

The problem with Arlington is their best athletes play soccer. A few years ago Cuse.com had many debates because so many people riding the Dematteo to Arlington bandwagon. The feeling was that young D would instantly take the coaching skills that his father had and turn a pretty lousy program into a top program.Gonna take a while because the foundation is pretty weak and their conference is very tough

  246. thetruth

It is going to take sometime for Arlington. It is a Soccer community!Kids are in leagues and clinics starting at 4 years old.

Give Dematteo sometime! He will do it if people have any patience.

Greene went to Clemson. Was a 4 year starter. His teammate I believe was Norm Hutchins who was a first round pick in baseball

  249. Hoops fan

    ballboy,
There was several other 1A players in the 90’s, but it just seems nowhere near the amount in the 80’s.

    Eric Ogbogu Stepinac/Maryland/NFL
    Kwasi Leverette Lincoln/Juco/Syracuse
    Maurice Minter Ossining/Syracuse
    Lamar Wilcher Ossining/Syracuse

I’m sure I’m forgetting a few others. Anyone else remember anymore?

  250. Hoops fan

    Rileygirl,
Yes, Norm Hutchins were teammates in both football and basketball. Not sure if Greene played baseball as well. Norm Hutchins was a phenomenal athlete, I thought he could’ve played major college football. Both Greene and Hutchins averaged about 20ppg playing basketball for Lincoln. If I remember correctly, there was a third excellent athlete on those Lincoln teams with Greene and Hutchins, I don’t remember his name though.

  251. Section1Guy

    @dutchesFBfan

Thanks for the history lesson, but I fail to see how any of that is relevant to current events in Section 1.

My whole point is, many people on these blogs talk about teams and players that they haven’t played against, and don’t watch film on all the time. You don’t see me commenting about players from the 80’s who I never played with or even saw play. After graduating from Mahopac I’ve come back and helped out, talked to players who I played with, watched some film, and even talked to players from other schools and asked opinions as to what the section is going to look like. As I said, people should go out and ask the players what they think, not just make biased opinions about things they know nothing about. I’m not saying you or others are, but it happens A LOT, on this blog.

As for Addinizio being compared to Autera, I played with Autera and have watched Addinizio play, and he will be just like Justin, even his coaches believe so.

    @Just a fact

I played Varsity Football at Mahopac from the end of the 05 Season as a Sophmore. I then played and started both ways as a Jr. and Senior. I was a Captain my senior year, and was named to the All-Section Team as a senior as well(The other All-Section Player that year was Justin Autera, so if you want to know who I am, go look me up). As for playing in College, I currently play Lacrosse in College but was offered to play for D-3 teams like Ghettsyburg but decided to play Lacrosse and concentrate on my studies. I hope my credentials are up to your standards.

As for using the Section1Guy name, I used it years ago on these blogs while I was still a player, and have also used it in the Lacrosse blogs. Sorry that this website doesn’t lock names and whatnot. I don’t mean to hurt anyone’s feelings, but its a free country and I can post under any name I wish.

  252. 10960

Booooooooo we want the real section 1 Guy!!!!!! LOL

I’m playing….. But how do we tell you guys apart??

  253. 10960

But how do we tell you guys apart??

  254. dutchessFBfan

    Sec 1 guy(not John Malone),

Autera finished his career as the all time leading rusher at Mahopac with over 3,000 yards rushing.. and most in Putnam County history(likely to be broken by Derek O’dell of Haldane this year)so Id still argue its premature to mention Addonizio as being near his caliber..as a former teammate of Auteras you certainly should understand he carried the load on both sides of the ball and rarely begged out due to injury or fatigue…speaking to kids is a futile act as they are just that…kids..just like speaking to parents..their kid is always a bit better in their minds and their home team usually follows suit..its rare you speak with a kid or parent who arent blatantly biased as Im sure youve seen from many posts on this site…I try to see as many games as possible yearly and have no particular rooting interest and have seen many over the years particularly in A and AA..I still say losing Taps, Perelle, Autera and Senatore is tough to replace with Addonizio,Bernabo,Viento, Olivier, etc…and no ostensible QB as Thiebold is unproven…Also I dont think anyone cares what your credentials are so long as youre informed and accurate…its OK to pontificate as a fan but if youre to be taken seriously you need to take out your bias..and smugness..sometimes a history lesson is in order for the uninformed..I wouldnt expect you to be knowledgable on stuff from the 80’s and 90’s as a 19-20 year old..Im sure if I asked you if you’d beat Carmel as a junior or senior youd swear yes when comparing head to head talent..even after watching all that film as you say and talking to other players in the section and speaking with your coaches…right??

  255. Section 1 Dude

Changed my name from Section1Guy as to not get anyone’s panties in a bunch.

    @Dutchess

Autera was certainly the best running back I have ever played with or against. I say this having played against Ryder Bolander who was supposedly God’s gift to the Earth, even though honestly, he somehow lost 30 lbs between his Jr. and Senior year while his production faultered. I played middle linebacker against Jay in my frist game and tackled him a half dozen times. My team might have played terrible, but I was not impressed by him. That is neither here nor there.

Now with respect to Justin, who is one of the most hard working, and probably the best pure offensive High School player I have played with, he didn’t carry the load on the defense end, really ever for Mahopac, so now, I doubt your expertise a little bit.

Your response about not talking to kids, just because they are kids, seems to be a little ignorant to me. You are obviously an intelligent person, and I think if you took the time to talk to a player and ask him legitiment questions, you may be enlightented. Not all 15-17 year old boys are idoits. If I went into every conversation with an elderly person and thought they were old fashioned and jaded, I woudln’t have learned a good portion of things in life.

As for the Carmel thing and asking me too not be biased, thats not what I’m talking about. Ask players who they think is good, who they think is bad, who they think is competition. Asking someone if they are going to lose is a stupid question, and if you ask coaches for their honest opinion (if you know them personally) they will usually tell you what they really think, not what they want their players to think.

As for Mahopac, being friends with literally all the players you mentioned, I can tell you, the replacements will do just fine, if not better in some ways. Autera was truly a once generation Athlete, but so is Adinizio. He may not be as driven as Justin, but he is as, if not even more gifted. As for others like Viento, he is a talent Mahopac hasn’t had the defensive side of the ball in a while and should be watched carefully. As for losing Taps, Mahopac’s future replacements, either Wagner or Foley, will do just fine, and are better suited for Mahopac’s run first pass later offense, espeicially since Mahopac likes to use their QB to run a lot.

Now thats beautiful dialogue. Dutchessfbfan, Im pretty sure that Josh MAddocks had over 3,ooo yards in the late 80s early 90s. If not , pretty close. Wheres Autera at now?

  257. dutchessFBfan

I believe Maddocks is right there but not sure he had over 3k..in any event a great name I forgot..now is Derek Odell better in Haldane lore if there is such a thing??Maddocks was a very shifty tough back..I beleive Autera is heading to SUNY Cortland from what Ive heard and think Odells 1400 and change last year is more than Maddocks ever compiled in a single season..a lot of stats are jaded in my opinon as the old timers generally played 8 regular season games(pre 1978) and possibly a bowl game..then we saw 9 game regular season games(1979-1989) and a bowl then 7 regular season games(1990-present) and crossover and/or playoffs..teams that make a deep run can play as many as 13 games in a year..nearly 50% more games than a kid whos team hangs it up after 9 games..its like the argument of old time NFL backs and a 12 game vs. 16 game season..there was a time that 1000 NFL rushing yards meant something and nowadays is a watered down achievement in my mind. For a true comparison you almost have to look at YPG when measuring kids head to head…but then again Ray Rice was done by halftime at the latest in most AA South games as a senior..so its an inexact science at best

  258. dutchessFBfan

    Sec 1 Dude,

As an aside, Autera led Mahopac in tackles last year, was second as a junior and 4th as a sophomore, 1st and second as a junior and senior is carrying the load to me when the kid had over 30 touches a game.. was the punter, returned kickoffs and punts and ranked second in sacks and fumbles caused as a junior and senior..what else would constitute carrying the load on defense if its not leading your team in tackles??Im hoping this statistical backup restores your confidence in my expertise for now???Anecdotal insight is always fun…but usually the stats if not fudged…tell the real story!

  259. Ramapo Alum

Regarding Seth Joiner, I actually had the pleasure of coaching him during training camp as a volunteer assistant during his senior year at Spring Valley. While I continue to lose my memory as I get old, I do remember this. Seth played blocking back in the old power I and inside line backer. He had a smash mouth attitude and would rather run through someone than around them. He was also a respectful and good kid and a quiet leader. Overall he had a great football attitude. Those traits, in addition to his god given talent were what propelled him to a stellar NFL career and possibly the best linebacker in Philadelphia Eagle history this side of Chuck Bednarick.

  260. dutchessFBfan

    On Ryder Bohlander,

Saw an assinine statement by now Sec 1 dude, regarding Ryder Bohlander and really shouldve responded..hes an easy target for many.as people were sick of his 5 year run of kicking peoples behinds.Im sure the thinly veiled reference to “30 lbs weight loss” would suggest he was not naturally built..but he played as a senior at 210-215 and was maybe 220 as a junior and it was related to his summer lacrosse regimen which landed him a full ride to Maryland as a defender..let me tell you he made a statement as a sub for Jon Carozza as a 13 yr old 8th grader when he rushed for over 100 yards…eighth grade for Christs sake! For the record because many here get away from the facts…Bohlander rushed for 1147 yards as a senior and scored 18 TD’s..16 rushing and 2 receiving vs 1114 as a junior with 14 rushing and 0 receiving..amazing given every defense he ever faced was geared to stop him..another great example of people tearing kids down.Oh and by the way see what JJCR’s record was in his tenure there…not coincidental..sounds like sour grapes from the former Sec 1 guy to me??Didnt ever beat him did you…??Enough of the yeah buts..lets stick to the facts here.

  261. Just a Fact

Dutchess, I agree with you, there are always haters around.

Bohlander and Gambino of recent, seem to be the easiest targets of the haters. I said this before and I will say it again, the best kids that have come out of Section 1 could ALL be questioned. Go up and down the line. From New Ro to Mahopac. Without proof everyone here should be silent. I will go further even with proof, this blog should not be used to put these kids down. Whether you played with these guys are did not, it does not matter. You have no right. Not to mention I wonder how much steroids is going around in College Lacrosse, and don’t give me they test, because I played college football and the whole o-line was juicing, and they had testing as well. These days with synthetic stuff it is probably even easier to beat the testing.

Bohlander’s career speaks for itself. I tackled Dereck Owens(Lassic), does that mean the kid stunk? No. His team went to the section championship where in the freezen cold he HURDLED the safety of Roosevelt for a TD and his team won the Section. He then went to Alambama then the Cowboys. His career speaks for itself as should ANYONE else that has played H.S. football.

  262. dutchessFBfan

    Just A Fact,

The safety was actually Arlington HC Dominic Dematteo an All Section DB/QB who went on to SUNY Albany if Im not mistaken..also think JJCR HC Jim Clarke was on the same team..and Roosevelts star back was Tyrone McGraw…Owens/Lassics backup was Cameron Williams who was unreal and went to Cincinnatti on a full ride as well!

  263. Just a Fact

Actually the safety name is Joe something. I do not think Dom Dematteo played D for Roosevelt.

  264. Just a Fact

If you Speka to Dom, ask him. I thought the kids name was Joe something. Italian last name.

  265. dutchessFBfan

Was it Joe Mastromonaco??You may be right..thought it was Dominic??Mastromonaco was the QB before Dom Dematteo at Roosevelt…Markel Granderson before that..Am I right??Dom did play D and I think was a SS for his dad..at least as a junior? He was #15 as I remember?

  266. Section 1 Dude

    @Dutchess

    Here’s a stat for you.

I led Mahopac in tackles my Jr. Year. My Senior year, I had a 1/3 as many, and was named to the All Section Team, and ackwoledged by my coaches as “Best Defensive Player” for whatever that is worth. I was a pretty good Tight End, I had 5 TD’s, but to my knowledge, it was because of my defense that I was named to the All-Section Team.

Mahopac’s Leading tackeler my Senior Year, was not named to the All-Section Team.

By virtue of playing the the Linebacker, most notably, the Inside Linebacker position, you get the most tackels, it’s a given. Justin’s own coaches said he never became the defensive player they thought he could be, and even said that he wasn’t nearly as great as you are making him sound. If you want to disagree, go right ahead, but I can tell you from playing with him, and as a friend of his, he isn’t as good as a defensive player as you are making him sound. Great doesn’t even describe how he was as a running back, but on the defensive end, he wasn’t great.

As for Bolander. I’m sorry, but losing 30 lbs from the ages of 16-17, when he was nothing but muscle at 16, makes zero sense to me. The fact that he literally ran over players that were much better at defense, and much stronger than I was when he was a jr. , and yet, at 175 lbs, I tackeled him repeatedly with little problem when he was a senior, I have my doubts. And believe me, I am not the only person who thinks this.

Hey, I could be wrong, but if you are naive enough to not even be a little suspicious, you’re out of your dam mind. Thinking that High School atheletes don’t use steriods or other substnaces is asinine.

Autera has had an even more impressive career than Bolander and I haven’t heard of one person saying that he has used steroids. Yet, people have questions about Bolander. Why is that?

    @Just a Fact

This has nothing to do with tearing kids down, but making observations and not being naive. I WISH, Section 1 had mandatory testing for Atheletes, because I guarentee that there are kids using steriods, because I know for a fact they have in the past. I know kids who used them as young as 8th grade, so don’t say it’s never happened.

I have every right to ask and wonder if people used steroids. Competition should be fair, and people will get hurt if kids are allowed to take whatever the hell they want while people turn a blind eye.

Reguarding Steroid use in College Lacrosse, I wouldn’t doubt it, but I have never witnessed it myself. Lacrosse isn’t exactly a sport were using steroids is going to make a BIG difference in my opinon. When I was a freshman, Matt Girsh was shooting 100 mph while not being physically strong. Just goes to prove you don’t need massive muscles to be able to dominate on a Lacrosse feild.

  267. Rebel

    Section1GUY(Dude)

If you were recruited to the school you can at least spell it correctly: GETTYSBURG COLLEGE.

Dude you might not be a good speller but you were a football player meaning blocking, tackling and hitting.

    FACTS:

Bohlander and JJCR beat Mahopac 30-2 home opener at MHS in game you said you played against him. The late Justin Wagner scored Mahopac’s only points on a safety. It was also JJCR 3rd win in a row against MHS and not close games. I think you should give him some respect.

As far as Autera is concern, he ran up big numbers on offense with the exception of JJEF and New Ro this year who basically stopped him. As far as defense is concern, Justin played well on defense but sometimes having most tackles doesnt mean he carried the load on defense since it could also mean, other teams ran at him. Again in big games MHS and Autera came up short.

Carmel will always find a way to beat MHS either picking Mahopac apart in the air like two years ago or running over them like last year. I think its 10 wins in 11 games.

Mahopac will always have a good FB team and this year should be no exception, but as even their own coach said he has only won one playoff game in 15 years in coaching at Mahopac.

    Check the game films.

  268. dutchessFBfan

    Dude(Former Sec 1 Guy)

Im getting sick to my stomach with the continual disinformation from you…your tackle numbers were fairly consistent from junior to senior year with 39 and 36 respectively..your sack total was 4.5 as a senior…you led the team in tackles as a jr but fail to mention you were #5 as a senior/they didnt drop in half, tell the truth …supassed by Hennely, Reefenhauser, Autera and Tim Taps who had 37 to your 36…lets cut out the BS here and fake stats..in the league you ranked anywhere from 30th to 37th in overall tackles over 2 years..and guess what, there were a lot of DB’s DT’s and others on the list so dont tell me about LB’s being given a sacred place on defense..I give you credit.. you have let everyone in a way know who you are..so lets stay with the facts here..get off of Bohlander because youll never convince me he wasnt a once in a lifetime section 1 player or that he and Autera can never be mentioned in the same discussion..you had a nice career and won many accolades and should be proud, as should your family..your posts started out interesting and have dipped to.. “I have no clue” and “Im not being honest” or “I have it in for Ryder Bohlander”...let me know if your stats are different because I didnt see a 50% differential?..but they certainly dont portray what youve said..oh and by the way Tim Taps was a safety not a linebacker, so why the tackle stats as a junior for Taps?...Were you their best defensive player?, I would argue yes, to at least co-best having seen you a handful of times..the coaches said so..so it must be..but if you watched Mahopac play you cant discount Reefenhauser as well, in the same discussion, a credit to the both of you and your families…I hope you think about my comments before you post about your contemporaries(Bohlander) again…kids do things that are stupid, sometimes illegal or embarrassing to them, thier parents, teams and coaches in high school and there are repercussions either short or long term..but they all deserve a second chance.Id get off the soap box if I were you? Know what I mean??

  269. dutchessFBfan

    To Francos Cuts 624,
Sal Sulla may be a wonderful kid, nice player, but not even near SUPER 11 or a NR great for that matter…Sulla out of returning juniors ranks 8th in rushing, 8th in scoring and 6th in YPG…lets talk about Derek Odell, Bronner, Jeff Mack, Sommer, the Bronxville kid, Donovan Walker, Lakeland kid..please, Ryan Schilling, Dakota Degree and others who arent even RB’s…Sal Sulla is an afterthought on any other NR team or season, but a very good player and Im sure great kid from what Ive heard…Derrick Owens,Cameron Williams,Artie Johnson, Cedrick Dawkins, Marcus Larkins, Kelvin Smith, Terrell Burnett, Matt Devincenzo, Reidrick Alceus..Im missing some but enough said…hes probably a great kid..but these are Raider greats..please dispute me on any of them if you will??Hes a FB and a grinder…most of these other guys were amazing D1, 1AA kids….NR wouldnt get out of AA North alive…theyd lose to Carmel, JJEF..and a tossup vs. Mahopac and RCK.??

  270. pac

    Section 1 dude
Wfen you were a player at mahopac did you wear number 44?

dutchessFBfan you can answer this too if you know

  271. Hoops fan

    dutchessfbfan,
Of all the NR rb’s that you mention. We all know where Derrick Lassic ended up with Alabama and the Cowboys and Cameron Williams went to Cincinnati. Where did the other guys end up playing college football?

  272. Just a Fact

    Section 1 Guy,

someone could say you were on steroids, how does anyone know? It is not about keeping your head in the sand, it is about not truly knowing. Even if they tested for steroids in high school, people would still find ways to take roids. If you do not believe that, who now is being naive?????

The fact you were 175lbs does not mean you did not take roids, it could mean you would have been 150lbs with out it. All hearsay and I for one think on this blog we should discuss football and call people out when they are out of line for attacking KIDS, EVEN IF YOU ARE STILL A KID YOURSELF,WHICH YOU OBVIOUSLY ARE.

Talking about naive, you do not see some if not most of the players on your lacrosse team all jacked up? Steroids is going to help in any sport. If someone throws the lacross ball 100mph without juice, then they take it and throw 110mph. Don’t believe me, look at all the pitchers that get busted in baseball.

Bottom line, just stop hating, Bohlander’s career way surpasses your h.s. football career. You should apologize, then move on or just move on. Good luck with your lacrosse.

  273. Section 1 Dude

    @Dutchess

I switched postions from my Senior to Jr. year. I was an inside linebacker my Jr. Season, and a outside linebacker by Senior year.

I don’t know where you are getting my stats from, but they are wrong. The stats taken by my your correct on the one’s from my Senior season, which I missed the last two games, and wrong on my Senior Season. If you are getting them from Maxpreps I can tell you that they are wrong, because they arr never accurate beacuse they have to submitted, and I know for a fact my team didn’t always submit them.

About Bolander, I made a comment about him, not his family. I used evidence that I, and OTHERS have saw and talked about. Do
    @Rebel
Please don’t hate on my spelling, sorry I could care less if I spell something wrong on a blog. And I can’t fix anything because this board doesn’t even have an edit button.

We got spanked my JJCR my Jr. year, I don’t need anyone to retell the story. We handed them the ball inside for the 25 yard line 3 sepearte times which led to scores on their part.

    @Just a Fact

If you saw my physique, it would be obvious I wasn’t on steriods. And if you think beating a steroid test is easy, at least the one’s they use in the NCAA and whatnot, you are misinformed. People don’t get caught because they are never actually tested, not every player is tested in College and the Pros, hence why they don’t get caught all the time.

I am not hating on Bolander. He is a great guy, always had respect for him as a person. Respected his skill on the field. I’m not the athlete he is, and I could care less to be honest. I’m making an observation, that is all. I have no need to apologize for anything.

You people are acting like I’m saying, “O Bolander is a A Hole, O Bolander is this, Bolander is that.” I made an observation about him, that others have talked about before, that’s all.

Tell me this, if he did do what I said, what would you think? People often think their idols are innocent and can do no wrong until they find out the truth. Now, can I be wrong? Sure I can, and to he honest, I hope I am, but I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if I was right. Look at Daviod Ortiz, everyone thought he was great, and now it’s found he did steroids.

  274. Just a Fact

The point is this is a high school football blog. This is not the place, to call high school or former high school students out about steroids. I will take it one step further. You can dog a team on here all you want, but in no way shape or form should a high school kid be singled out and put down. You want to discuss steroids go on foxsports or espn an blog your heart out.

    This is just my opinion.

I do not know Bohlander but feel if he was my kid, friend, ect… I would hope others rose to the occasion to do the right thing on this blog. You might want to do some projecting and ask yourself if you had a kid, would you want others to be attacking him on a blog ,whether it is deserving or not.

As far as testing at the college level, I have not played college football for sometime now, but when I was there in the early 90’s, there was testing by the NCAA EVERY YEAR! I was one of the few who did not do roids, but it seemed like it was atleast 50% if not more. I would assume beating those tests are even easier today. I will let some current college players weigh in, but some might be afraid to call out team mates, which I can not fault them for.

  275. dutchessFBfan

    Dude and Just A Fact,

This is like a car accident that you dont want to look at..but have to…I think making accusations via internet is small and weak at best…now that I know who Dude is… I dont beleive that to be the case…but Im still perplexed with the initial Bohlander comments??Certainly he was raised better(Dude)... and was a team leader…perhaps the time of the post if you check may explain it? I was tested for drugs as well as a college football player..and my team was as juiced as it came and one of the better teams in the country. Lets move on..and I hope you post on real issues as you seem to be fairly intuitive..and honest…so lets keep it that way.Lets not comapre pros who make a living from sports to interscholastic kids either..not a great comparison? I did get your stats from MaxPreps and if theyre wrong…mea culpa…as I said… in my mind watching #44 and #12 was a wash…2 old school hard nosed kids..neither of whom was more than 180? Good luck at school!

  276. Section 1 Dude

If I could make accusations in public I would, but I’m not making accusations, I’m making observations. Like I said, I have nothing against Bolander, I think he’s a good guy, great athelete, but something didn’t seem right, and I wasn’t the only person to notice, that’s all.

As for the NCAA, there is testing every year, yet not each player is tested all the time. Random tests are used, up until the Championships when all teams and all players involved are tested I believe.

Steroids, if cycled correctly, can not show up on drug tests if things like the persons testosterone level decreases to normal levels and stuff like that.

In the Pro’s, I know there is only random testing. Some players can go for more than a year without having to pee in a cup or give blood.

And by the way, if you read my intial comments on Bolander, I was comparing him Justin, who I think was a better running back. (I didn’t mention steroids once) In my mind, JJCR had one of the best O-lines in 06 Section 1 has seen in the past couple years. Not to mention Kevin Stockel was slippery as hell at QB. So, In my opinon, I think Bolander was more of a product of his team, than his own greatness. Autera, didn’t play with the best O-Line, and his senior year and towards the end of his Jr. Year, he had little help do to injuries. And his numbers were better, although I think his ypc was less than Bolanders but he scored more TD’s and had more yardage.

  277. gillie

    nanuet 3!
    Nanuet 3!

I feel like every yr this team gets no respect from kevin.
They went 6-3 last yr losing to rye twice. In fact they were only team to be up on them last season.
They return 6 offense starters, inlcudind the 3 backs and 7 defense starters. including all 4 linebackers, the same linebacking core who pitched 3 shut outs, and gave up 6 to irvington from a special teams mistake.

the fact is this team has skill

  278. section 1 coverage unit

The Harvey Cavaliers are loaded with talent this year. They lost only one big player in pete sorensen, and bring back a loaded defense consisting of lbs devon mccrosson, jamie lunt, and fs mike cohen. If their line can stay healthy this defense will be very hard to score against. I predict them to win the HVAL this year over fieldston.
