Why is Josh Graham’s picture on the varsity central homepage?
Kevin, it’s a great idea to have this page dedicated to the highlight videos of the players, but think one reason why there aren’t more is because of the fear that you (the player) are going to be scrutinized to no end if they put themselves out there.
The PK kid, who has committed to UConn, which should be celebrated, had a large number of posts saying he wasn’t good enough… same with Iona kid who transferred to St. Thomas Aquinas. If these kids are getting ripped on by the bloggers, imagine what will be said about a kid who who doesn’t even have a chance at Division 1A or 1AA. What may seem like constructive criticism to the blogger, may feel like a personal attack to a 16-18 year old kid.
If you could create a page in which no comments were allowed, just the viewing of videos, I would bet that more highlight films would be sent.
I would send mine in, but it is from the 70’s. A little out of focus and grainy. LOL
3 yards and a cloud of dust
Send it in anyway. What school did you play for? I want to see more of that era of high school football.
AHH
3 yards and a cloud of dust,
I played in the 70s too. For Rye to be specific.
Also, I’m with you GoNewRo. I’d love to see some more footage of that era. GLORY DAYS OF HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL !
Realist, you hit the proverbial nail on the head. Kevin has done a fantastic job of increasing attention and exposure of high school sports in this area, but with that has come some evil. There are way too many attacks on these kids. And they are just that, kids. Think about it. We are talking about 15, 16, 17 and sometimes 18 year old people. If adults on the street were seen and heard saying some of the things that are written about kids on this blog, they would be ridiculed, ostracized, and in some cases, prosecuted for child abuse. Don’t believe me? Try it. Go up to some random teenager on the street today, and just begin berating him, telling him he’s no good, he can’t do this, can’t that, etc….you get my point. Some might call the police on you, most would be appalled by you. Yet on here, it happens every day. Sad. Kevin is partially to blame for allowing it to happen (it is his blog after all is said and done), but the real blame lies with the individuals who post such garbage. I’m not looking for a blog void of criticism, a “feel good”, “hey all is well in the world” blog. If a player performs badly, say just that, performs well mention that as well. But the attacks are uncalled for. The other side is the parents of these kids, or maybe in some really sad cases the kids themselves, feeling the need to post how great they are. The debate between Tom Pizzurro’s father (posting anonymously) and one poster (posting anonymously) a couple of blog entries ago was hilarious at times, but indicative of a larger problem of parents/children craving media attention. This blog fuels that problematic issue. I also believe the anonymous nature of this blog allows such things to occur as well. There is not a chance in hell that 3/4 of the things written in this blog would be if posters were forced to attach their real names to their posts. I do see both sides, heck, I’m not sure if I would post this entry if I had to attach my real name. People are cowards by nature these days, and rarely say exactly what they feel, unless they can do it anonymously. I just think there is something to be said for accountability, especially when dealing with young people, even if that means muzzling some “true” thoughts about these individuals. At the end of the day these young people are not professional athletes earning millions, not big time college performers in a multi-million dollar industry. They are simply someone’s son, brother, nephew; playing a sport we all love. There is no need to anonymously personally attack them because they choose to do so.

I went to Rye too – didn’t play. Without telling me too much what number were you – how did you do against Harrison? Early, mid or late 70’s?
Anybody got anything on Sammy Maldonado ?
He sure fell of the face of the earth.
After playing at Maryland for 3 years he’s probably counting his millions working for his father running parking garages in NYC. Sammy certainly did not live up to the hype coming out of high school, but let’s face it, anything short of a two or three time All-American in College, and multiple Pro Bowls in the NFL would not have lived up to expectations coming out of high school. He still started at RB for a BCS school, how many people can say that? Pretty amazing accomplishment if you ask me. If you don’t believe me, here’s the link to an old article about Sammy in ESPN The Magazine:

Tyrae Woodson and Morris Hilton highlights can be found on youtube. See what you think.
see what you think – Morris Hilton and Tyrae Woodson Hilights on youuu tuuuubeee
GoNewRo,
Oh Geez, small world !
Oh boy lets see. I played in the early 70’s.
Jersey #22
HuskyNation,
Wow so even after being a “bust” after high school he still gets to count his millions. That is something.
RyeG
Don’t tell me too much but I need another piece of the puzzle. Just a small piece will do.
RyeG
Was your harrison game at Rye or Harrison?
Haha Ok lets see,
ah well the harrison-rye game. Classic !
Played at Rye
RyeG
OK – now we’re getting some place. When you say your harrison game was in Rye you’re telling me as a senior, right?
Also, “early 70’s” mean not later than 1974. 1975 is considered mid 70”s
1971 and 73 were both played in Rye. 2-0 classic and 20-8 classic.
#22 indicates to me you were either a running back or a d back or both. Did you score much as a senior or have any interceptions. What color car did you drive? We probably sat next to each other in Mr. Sax’s history class. Did you go to Cook’s on Friday and Saturday nights?
Don’t tell me too much. Small piece will do
GoNewRo,
Let me verify
My Senior year was the devastating but classic 2-0 defeat.
And I started out the year as a Corner but by the third game I was switched over to running back.
The color of the car I drove was red.
and oh god mr.sax ! I havent heard about him in the longest time. I remember him always wearing these magnificent ties.
And cooks. Of course ! That was the spot to be
GoNewro,
My wife is complaining.
Need to get some yard work done
Perhaps when I get back we can go down memory lane a little further.
I know that there are some videos of Markell Rice, Tremayne Williams and Samad Wagstaff on youtube
RyeG
did you play much the year before in the 3-0 game?
Ernie Sisca made an interception to end the 3-0 game – did the daily item mistakenly give you the credit for the interception?
Sheesh, will you two get a room already? Enough of this back and forth BS. Exchange email addresses and get it over with will ya, no one wants to read this crap.
HuskyNation,
What is it to you ?? Who cares If two people are going back and forth rehasing their high school days ?! No one else is posting. And I for one have enjoyed the conversation those gentleman have had. So my advice for you would be. If you don’t like whats on page, then leave. Plain and simple.
Real tough guy we have on our hands fellas.
Please continue with the conversation
GoNewRo,
Yes I played a pretty good amount that year. However no that wasn’t me. I actually left the game early do to a shoulder injury on a dirty play by one the Harrison Linebackers Frank Dalvadeni.
Oh wow this is something !
Mind if I join you guys in the conversation ?
I played for Harrison in the early 70’s as well !
The rivalry was never as heated as it was back then !
Oh and by the way kevin, I have some harrison footage. Not all that great though
HSFBALLFANATIC,
Thank you.
RYEG
So you left the 3-0 game early on an injury? But what I’m asking is did the Daily Item mistakenly list you as making the interception when Ernie Sisca actually did? The Daily Item did make that mistake in the Monday paper following the Saturday 3-0 game. The mistake was in a photo.
Some other questions:
Did you play for Lou Drago on the baseball team?
Did you also have a younger sibling play for John Nugent on the football team?
HuskyFever,
Great jump in. I need a number and where was your Rye game. Early 70’s means not later than 1974 right?
Oh oh oh
right I follow you now. Yes I believe so I was given credit where credit wasnt due.
And yes sir, I sure did play baseball. Pitcher and played some Centerfield.
And yup I did, your on a roll now.
I wore #19
Senior game was home. Lost by 4 points
Amazing game. Ending sure sucked on our side.
RyeG
You were THE pitcher – the best in the county that year. You beat Irvington that year in baseball to win the B-C open championship. You only played centerfield because you weren’t allowed to pitch every game.
That was great. Thanks for the memories
Hahaha well thank you very much. We had a great squad though not to take all the credit. Hahaha thats great. Centerfield was fun but I enjoyed pitching a hell of a lot more.
And don’t thank me. I thank you. This was somethin else.
But it doesnt have to end just yet does it ?
What else ya got
HuskyFever,
So we’re talking about 18-14. What a classic. #19 – were you a defensive back? I remember Moll being #22, LaRusso being #23 and Morris being #44.
RyeG,
I got plenty
Haha good !
Hit me with it
and are you sure you weren’t a player. You sure do know your stuff keep it comin
RyeG
You were a great tennis player too if I remember correctly.
HuskyFever,
I have the 18-14 tape right here in front of me. If I put it on will I see you on the field?
This is tough for me because I’m not from Harrison
Need another piece of the puzzle. Give me a small piece though.
Husky Nation,
Shut the hell up. No one is forcing you to read this, or go on this page. So make yourself scarce
GoNewRo,
haha good lord you know your football. And I was mostly a wideout and got a few carries early on before Seth turned it on
Yup I did play some tennis as well
Oh and since you seem to be loyal to New Rochelle or live in New Rochelle or something, a good friend of mines son I think will be playing for New Rochelle this season. Eric Livingston. Keep a sharp look out. Fast as Lightning. That is if he gets to play this year. If not then nevermind.
To show how times have changed id like to point out how portchester for most of the seventies beat harrison and would have beaten rye while today games between port chester and harrison are not even close.
Huskynation,
for heavens sake are you kidding me ?! Why are you telling them to get a life ?! They’re have a discussion. You are doing nothing except making a fool out of yourself.
Like i’ve said. No one is forcing you to be on here. So if you dont like it leave. God ….kids today.
RyeG,
If you come to the NewRo games I will find you. That would be great. What year is Eric Livingston in?
Ok that sounds great ! And hes gonna be a Junior this upcoming season. He’s big, but very fast.
PC,
Didn’t PC play Harrison in a bowl game in November of 71? Harrison had big Rich Cozzi and PC had a player named Kahn I think.
Port Chester vs Mamaroneck was a great rivalry also.
I remember Ben Bedini, legendary Rye coach coaching PC and making a great 2nd half comeback to shock Mamaroneck in a 60’s game.
What position is Eric Livingston gonna play if he gets to play for New Rochelle ?
I feel like I’m at a coffee shop sitting down next to some ol’timers in a small football town early friday morning game day. The strong Black coffee steaming, pehaps a lit cigar and the papers opened up to the local sports page I love it.
RyeG
I don’t remember the red car. Did you have it in high school? I remember you driving around with a friend in a nice convertible I think.
When you moved to running back in your senior year, Rye already had Blye, Hunziker and John Carey, right?
HuskeyFever,
I need more information. Did you play basketball and/or baseball too?
go new ro,
do you give oral exams?
Here we go with the Rye Harrison stuff. ahhhhh
I like the love affair of Rye and Harrison. It is entertaining
I guess people did check out the Tyrae Woodson and Morris Hilton Highlights. See when you look good there is no bad comments.
10960,
Very well put – very descriptive – very accurate and very funny.
But back in the 1970’s things revolved around the local sports page. The Harrison, Rye and Port Chester area was covered by the Daily Item newspaper. We couldn’t wait to read the crystal ball, the predictions of the games made by the late Arn Shein, the sports editor. The games would be played on Saturday of course but then we would have to wait to Monday afternoon to read about the games. No publication on Sunday and it was an afternoon paper.
It was certainly different than today but no less exciting and fun.
Thank you. That was great
GoNewRo,
I had it I believe my junior year
haha thats funny you remember the convertible
sweetest ride in school back then.
And yes thats correct rye had all those guys.
We had a hella of a team my junior year. and a pretty darn good team my senior year too. We just put on way to many lack-luster performances against teams we should have killed
Husky nation ,
Are you actually gonna bring something to the table on this blog
or are you just gonna be a complete idiot and make stupid re-marks. On 2nd thought dont answer that.
we all know the answer
Husky nation is an idiot
While Huskynation didn’t use the best words in getting his message across he is right this isnt a chat room.
I think Huskie nation & Rye G have been watching to many cash in the attack shows
Well I’ll be damned.
Nothing like a bunch of guys talking about the glory days and reminiscing about the 70’s.
Suppose I join you boys in the conversation.
class of ‘77
Jersey #4
Rye High 77
Give me a minute though. I need to mentally move from the early 70’s to the mid 70’s. But I’ll get there. I think I can do it.
Thanks.
Ok Ok lets see
I did play baseball
but talking about the 18-14 game, if you have the videotape
Im covering the Rye Wide-out ( forget his name) who makes the Lynn Swan type catch to put Rye on the board.
That was a sign of things to come.
Rye High 77,
You graduated RHS 77 right? Your Harrison game was in Harrison and that was the 15-12 loss – right?
HuskyFever,
OK – Don’t even need the tape. George burkhardt puts the garnets on the board.
Question: Did you also have a younger sibling play?
Correction. I played basketball. I’m watching the baseball game. Been a long hot day. But I played basketball.
GoNewRo,
alright sounds good.
Need any help ?
HuskeyFever,
OK – that helps. But did you have a younger sibling play football also?
Rye High 77
#4 that indicates backfield – offense or defense or both?
Question: Did you have an OLDER sibling play football for Rye?
GoNewRo,
Yes, for the most part played offense but played some D at times. And yes, he graduated a few years before me.
Rye High 77
Did you have 2 older siblings play sports at RHS?
How about this.
Out of all the Rye teams in the 70’s
What team was the best. And the same for Harrison. And out of those two. Who comes out on top.
GoNewRo,
Yes sir, I think youve got me pinned. But if not
The initials of my two older brothers were M and G
Just for clarification,
LetsGoNewRo and GoNewRo are two different people.
LetsGoNewRo,
Great question ! I would have to go with Rye 73.
Rye High 77
I had you pinned a while ago. I just needed to verify it.
You and your brothers were tremendous athletes.
It’s been fun.
Stay well
GoNewRo,
Hahaha shoot. Very good.
Hey, whatever happened to Cooks ?
Thats not still around is it ?
Rye High 77, How did it feel , when Artie ran you over? LMAO
