Iona Camp news

I got out to the Iona Prep Camp the last two nights. What I saw was a New Rochelle team struggling to find continuity, a Rye squad searching an identity and an Iona Prep team looking for its best players.
None of the three teams at Iona Camp remotely resembled what they did last season, nor did they look like the squads that will likely take the field in September. But that’s to be expected out of this camp. All three left this camp last year with major question marks. And all three went on to win championships.
Here’s a quick look at the three:
Iona Prep
In today’s Journal News I had a story about the new CHSFL rules regarding offseason workouts. You can read it here. Essentially, the league decided it wasn’t going to allow teams to conduct full-squad, 11-on-11 camps in the spring and summer months because it was an unfair advantage. Instead, they can only use seven players on the field at once.
To me, this is an anti-Iona Prep rule. Of all the teams in the league, the Gaels do the most offseason camps, followed by Stepinac. Iona Prep turned out to be the best team in the state last year… and months later this rule was adopted. Majority rules, sorry Iona, the league basically told it, and it was approved (See, this blog isn’t the only place to get your anti-Iona fix).
Anyway, I watched the scrimmages at the camp last night and realized it was actually WORSE to have full-contact 7-on-7 than 11-on-11. Think about it: On offense, the three teams used “half lines” and no receivers to one side and ran all the plays to one direction. In theory, it makes sense. But you don’t account for the safety and middle linebacker, who just sprint to that side and lay out whoever is in front of them. If there were 11 players, those guys would have to monitor both sides of the field. Not in this case.
On one play last night when Rye was on offense, Conor Eck hit Cole McCormack on the left sideline and he got hit hard (and was momentarily holding his knee on the ground; he was OK). But the hit never would have happened if the safety didn’t shade to that side knowing there was absolutely no way the play was going to the other side. Get it? Rye coach Dino Garr sure did. He was livid at the entire 7-on-7 setup. New Ro coach Lou DiRienzo expressed his displeasure in his sarcastic, joking manner. I agreed with both. It’s not football.
Anyway, Iona Prep never had the full complement of players at camp this week. Tyrae Woodson-Samuels missed Sunday because he attended the Hofstra Camp. Jeff Mack and Greg Gadsen were down at Rutgers Camp on Sunday and Monday. Jordan Bronner (who actually might not play from what I’m hearing) was playing AAU basketball. Morris Hilton didn’t practice yesterday because of an ankle injury. Those are five of their top players.
Woodson-Samuels looked pretty good yesterday, especially running the ball. I think we’ll hear a lot more this year out of Michael Dunkley and Sidney Weston. The line is enormous. George Apostolopoulous looked good and Michael Longo is really growing into his frame.
Iona defensively looked good against Rye, disrupting the passing game. Where Iona struggled was at receiver. For a team that never dropped balls last year, many dropped to the turf yesterday.
New Rochelle
The Huguenots are usually a hard team to read until their own Champions Camp in late July. They’re always shifting guys around, especially in the backfield and guys who carry the ball now might not touch it in a month when they’re moved to offensive guard.
From what I saw, Xavier Walker looked like a bull running through the line. Very little stutter-stepping and juking. It was full speed ahead, which even at 5-6, he needs to do consistently. He didn’t get quite as many carries last season as I thought. But I think this could really be his breakout year.
Lewis Edney, who’s taking over for Jonny McGhee at quarterback, looked very sharp at some times. Clearly, he’s still learning the position and getting comfortable in his surroundings. But he throws a nice ball and seems to have develop command of the offense. It’s going to be a little easier for him considering the Huguenots return so few players on offense.
As for McGhee, it’s clear he isn’t coming back, which is unfortunate. He was a star for them the last two seasons and, even if he wanted to come back, I’m not sure how he’d be received after missing all this time.
Julian Griffin is back at New Rochelle after spending last season at Mamaroneck, although I didn’t get to see much. He could be a wild card for the Huguenots. He’s not huge but he’s lightning fast and he got considerable playing time at Mamaroneck last year.
Lou DiRienzo Jr. looked good at middle linebacker, as always, and the entire defense around him looked so quick. From what I’m told, and got to see a little yesterday, this is the fastest the New Rochelle defense has been in a few years. I believe it.
Rye
Last year you could argue that the Garnets were the most “game ready” at this camp last year. This season, not so much.
Rye had its moments, but it was clearly a major work-in-progress. Conor Eck looked like he was maybe a step ahead of the new guys around him, but was otherwise pretty good. His timing was a little off with the receivers, most of which are new, so it’s expected.
Even knowing what the Garnets graduated, the backfield isn’t going to skip a beat. Cole McCormack, coming off a 1,000-yard season, continues to grow and there might not be a tougher runner in Section 1. Then you added Brendan Nagle into the mix. Nagle plowed through the New Ro defense on a few occassions yesterday. He’s 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds and runs so hard. Jack O’Callaghan had a few nice grabs, and the Garnets didn’t have T.J. Storino, who’ll be the Pat O’Callaghan-type as a dual-threat runner/receiver.
Defensively, the Garnets looked so raw and got beat by New Rochelle’s speed and Iona’s execution, it was impossible to really get a read. They were also without Charlie Rollins, their best two-way lineman, plus about 8-10 others, so I don’t know if the guys on the field are their true players or not.
There was so much talk at the camp about Rye moving to Class A and needing to find the added depth and be more of a polished team. I don’t buy it. The Garnets would have won the Class A title in four of the six years they just won the B, guaranteed. To think that they’re in some other football dimension by moving up is absurd.
When Rye’s run started, Class B consisted of Harrison, Eastchester, and Somers. Sure, teams like Ossining and Nyack are going to be tough. But the Garnets will surely be able to handle it. Will they beat Ossining in the first week? It’s going to be difficult. But can Rye still win the Class A title? Right now, I think they just might.
If you were out at any camps over the last few days, please drop us a line and let us know how it went. There are a bunch more camps scheduled for late-July/early-August that I hope to get out to. If you know of any, let me know the dates and sites.

kev, harrison scrimmages new ro today at hhs around 2
The chsaa makes up the rules as they go along – this is no secret and everyone knows this. So now they can’t have
11 on 11 – love to see how they will enforce this with all the teams in the league. As soon as certain schools got better in basketball they made 3 divisions – terrible! What is allowed for one school to recruit is not allowed for another…etc. etc. As competitive as a league that the CHSAA is in football / basketball / baseball – the rules and league itself change all the time. It seems that whenever a particular program starts to get better
eye brows raise and new rules come about – it’s becoming a joke and all “they” are doing is hurting the kids.
p.s. and enough with saying it has to do with insurance and liability and the rest of the b.s. that I have heard.
First of all the rule has been in the league bylaws for ever. The penalty was adapted this year. The principles voted unanimously to vote in new penalty for disobeying. Including all local Presidents & headmasters.
NCAA has rules. Not everyone likes them. Memphis & Florida State & USC are going through problems now. They broke the rules. Did USC benefit from OJ Mayo playing for them? Yes – where rules broken ? Rules are put in place for the right reasons not to punish one team or two teams. If you break the rule you pay the price. Not everyone agrees with rule- But it is the rule at this time. Teams who have been going to these camps in the CHSFL, have been getting around old rule using the language of rule. They are going to a private camp ect ect.
The league actually found out about camps because of this blog. because camps last year became the Super bowl with play by play blogging of what went on. Be careful what you blog. People are always watching & listening.
For many years teams went to these camps as they would go to Rutgers camp or Fordham university camps. No one is trying to stop kids from getting better. Team camps have become very popular in this area- They are not as popular yet out on LI & SI & NYC.
The CHSFL principals voted not allow teams to compete in these camps.
Football coaches for years have been trying to find ways to compete with Basketball , Lacrosse & baseball that seem to never stop playing. Team leagues have popped up all over, open gyms= fall baseball, summer leagues, winter leagues & so on. Because football uses school equipment many schools are always worried about lawsuits. With the physical nature of football it has been a concern. Private schools unlike public do not have endless amount of money or lawyers at there expense to fight these lawsuits.
I personally don’t agree with rule or punishment. But what does my opinion matter. I don’t agree we should have to wear a seat belt when driving either. But if you get caught you get penalized.
Kevin-
Excellent article plus thank you for all the work you do in providing great information.
The CHSFL has been and will always be a league run by the old guard Long Island and Bronx administrators. The success of Iona Prep in the CHSFL AAA and the improvement of Stepinac where they beat the likes of Farrell and St. Francis Prep annoyed these old dinosaurs.
The main culpret looks like Mario Valentini from Mount St. Michael. Mount St. Michael and Iona Prep have a major rivalry which has become especially nasty on the football side. It goes back to Valentini being aggravated that kids are selecting Iona Prep as the high school they want to attend. Mount St. Michael over the years always had a sense of entitlement about kids attending their school.
Iona Prep has beaten Mount St. Michael 4 out of the last 5 years so I guess if you can’t beat them on the field you have to use your power on the executive committee to enforce a pathetic rule to try and slow down a rival.
Parent: some good points
li football:
understand your points but at the end of the day – the kids lose out which is what i thought this was all about. shame on the league if these rules were in the by-laws all along and did not enforce them – just proves how disorganized the league is. just finished reading the journal news article and mount supports the rule because they have never participated in those type of camps – this explains everything!
do you think this might have anything to do with those 2 really good football players going to one school and not the other – haha!!!!
Be careful what you write ! That could end up hurting kids more than the rules.
From what I understand the Iona Principle asked for penalty to be strengthened at meeting. FYI. Go talk to him.
The CHSFL runs an outstanding league which has 20 teams from all over metro area for over 50 years. Some of teams played 12 games last year & no one puts pads away on Halloween like in other leagues. Teams in section 1 some will play 6 league games & a playoff game & end there careers. A few kids get to compete at state level which is a great honor. The CHSFL has also not cut games next year because they believe sports are very important to the kids & the schools. Please put it in perspective.
LI Football
I believe you are incorrect about your comment about the administration voting for increased penalties.
After reading the direct quotes from Coach Vic I find it hard to believe he would make those comments if the Iona principle was for the rule.
it is a fact
every principal voted for rule to be enforced. All 20 votes
IONAPOWER 7 ….. LI FOOTBALL/ MOUNT COACH / CHSFL 0
IONAPOWER’S 9:55A.M. COMMENT WAS SO FUNNY AND TRUE – HAHA!
P.S. IONAPOWER YOU SCORED ON AN 80 YARD JEFF MACK TYPE KICK RETURN.
I agree this rule seems unnecessary, but if 20 principals voted unanimously there could be more than football factors at play. Clearly, schools like Iona and Stepinac who are the smallest of the top CHSFL schools benefit from these camps while schools like Mount don’t use them at all and apparently the schools on LI, SI, NYC haven’t gotten into them either.
I do disagree with the negative comments about the CHSFL in general. Of course, there are going to be bad decisions or things one disagrees with made once in awhile, but overall I think most decisions in the CHSFL/CHSAA do benefit the kids. Think about the comparision mentioned above, this year many Section 1 teams will play only 6 games and be done by mid October. CHSFL teams will play 12. I’ve heard Section 1 basketball teams are playing 18 games and are restricted from most out of state travel. CHSAA teams play 24 games with no restrictions out of state. The number og games played are major decisions that 100% affect the kids in both their enjoyment of playing hs sports and even in their chances for opportunities in college.
We are claiming vicory ! That is a good one.
Read Kevin’s article, the entire article.
“The NYSPHSAA once had rules prohibiting any offseason workouts conducted by coaches or using equipment. But those rules were abolished in 1996 because they were deemed unenforceable. Schools such as those in Section 1 now can hold unlimited workouts, as long as they are not mandatory for players to attend.”
The rule was changed in NY State because they could not enforce it!
The CHSFL has chosen not to change rule. They always had asked that each school to police itself. Which I guess does not work because everyone is looking for an edge or that next great player.
The league decide after reading this blog last year every day that these camps had gotten out of hand & that schools in league where getting an advantage & not following the rule that has been in place for 50 years.
The league then decided to give rule some teeth to control teams to follow rule or face penalty.
I guess maybe now schools will follow rule. Hopefully next year coaches will go to meetings & try to get rule changed. Have principals vote in a different rule. That is the process that needs to be taken. We don’t need to name coaches & programs on Blog & blame them.
Again- I think the rule is terrible & there is nothing better than our kids & teams being instructed to do things the right way from there coaches as much as possible. But rules must be followed so it does not become a 13 month season. Because some people don’t even know when to give kids a break.
can anyone elaborate on what happened with McGhee?
Rye is going to start off the season 1-3 ossining(L) saunders(W), eastchester(L), sleepy hollow(L)......
More believable 3-1 O town got a good shot but is about it and I’m not even a rye fan(exp. for when there in the dome)
If you knew anything about Iona , you would know that the principal and the coach don’t get along. The principal wants the “voluntary workouts” limited at Iona because he knows it is getting a little too much. How could Gentile/Woodson battle be figured out in July last year if this wasn’t the case.
The coach doesn’t care what anyone thinks and will just keep doing whatever he wants.
I can’t wait to see how Rye does this year.
Genero
I hope we are not going to bring up the Woodson/Gentile argument again as that was settled after Iona won the championship with Woodson.
The principle of any school has the ability to hire/fire any coach. Now most people would agree that Coach Vic has done a great job coaching both football and basketball to championship seasons. The principle should stick to academic issues and let the Iona AD who is very experienced handle athletic issues.
Fan,
This is the third or fourth time you have written that Rye will be 1-3 or at the very least lose to Sleepy Hollow. Two years ago when the Horsemen had their “great” team that just about everyone, including me, thought would beat the Garnets early that season and wound up getting smoked. Then, fell apart in the closing seconds at Mahopac in a closer loss to Rye. I have news for you. This year’s Rye team may be a better one than the 2007 team with more depth and talent. If you think Sleepy Hollow will beat them, good luck and God bless, but from what I’ve heard they are not nearly as good as the 2007 contingent. Ossining will be a great test for Rye, and perhaps a barometer for the season. Eastchester will be very good with lots of size. Before it’s all said and done all three of these teams will be factors in A, but the chances of Rye losing three of their first four games is not very good. If it happens perhaps Kevin can get you a writing gig at the Journal News predicting the games on Friday’s.
Someone help me out… why is the Iona Prep Principal being blamed for this when the article states that the CHSFL Principals council which according to the CHSFL website is made up of 3 principals made the decision to end the 11 on 11 altogether even though the executive ctte recommended allowing at least 1 11 on 11 camp.
help me out. thanks.
I respect your opinion on this blog. You are very knowledgable about football in our area. I do find it funny that you don’t want the Gentile situation brought to light. Last year on this blog Gentile lost his job in July. It was written about daily. Parents of a kid who pays 12,000 to go to a school & have had a past history at school in athletics was beat out before tryouts can legally start on Aug 20th? Yes, Gentile could have accepted a 2nd string position or moved to another position with a possibility of starting. Iona probably made the correct choice but it was July. I can understand a principal & a head master having a problem with something like this happening out of season. Yes it is there business. I am sure they had many alumni calls about it they had to deal with as well as the Alumni calls when they won Championship.
& if anyone did not know the situation all you had to do is go to this blog & read about every play each day. I said it before People should be very careful what they write ! & also who they write about.
But you have no problem trashing Mario Valentini & Mount. Mario has been an outstanding coach , teacher & AD in the CHSFL for over 30 years. He was won CHSFL championships, he has had many kids go on to Div 1 & even the pros in his career at that school.
Maybe his friendship with Iona is not the greatest, but he does nothing but do the right thing for his kids , team & the CHSFL.
The vote & penalty was decided by the Presidents council of the CHSFL. Which consists of 20 principals or presidents of each school.
You are absolutely right when Stating that Vic has done a great job at Iona. Everyone in the area football circuit knows he is a bright young coach who has brought Iona to greatness. But almost everyone has a boss. I would believe that the principle & headmaster at Iona still call the shots when it comes to the final say. I have found in life that everyone is expendable.
I am not sure what you mean by three people made decision from CHSFL website.
The principles & head masters for all 20 schools were at one of there meetings about the CHSFL. [They meet 2 times a year] Topic was brought up by league President concerning [team camps]. 20 principles voted to enforce rule that has been in place for over 50 years that was not being followed.
They changed wording to allow 7 on 7 competitions & individual camps .
One school president asked for rule to have some teeth so each school could go back to there school & enforce it.
The rule then added that the penalty would be if a team was caught going to a team camp & having more than 7 players on field at one time they would be not allowed to participate in that years playoffs at year end. It was voted on Principles 20 yes – 0 no
principals- sorry
li football:
fair enough – good points – hopefully the league and schools can reach a compromise and the teams can have or attend 11 on 11 camps with restrictions – time will tell.
ionapower:
its not always about winning championships.
LI Football
The Woodson/Gentile issue has no bearing on this ruling. Coaches are entrusted to make the best decisions for the program and the players in that program. Some decisions might not be popular and this one was not for some people.
I do have a problem with the Mount coach due to his sense that certain kids are obligated to attend MSM. It is obvious that he was outspoken about this rule because he knew it benefitted a program that has beaten his program 4 out of the last 5 years. NO ONE WAS EVER PREVENTING MSM FROM ATTENDING ANY FOOTBALL CAMP. His quotes in the article come off as selfish because he is basically saying the camps have never helped HIS program.
As per the CHSFL website below you will find the administration for the league

Any news on the Block and Tackle camp between Somers, Kennedy and Gorton????
The rule is in place. They can choose to follow it or not. Just like recruiting. Wink, Wink.
The Donald
So are you saying that Iona is the only school in the CHSFL AAA that recruits. Iona is not even nearly as aggressive as other programs.
I would say you should maybe take a look at the battle for players that goes on between Farrell, St. Joseph by the Sea and Xaverian. You also do not reach the level that St. Anthony has by being passive. St. Anthony just spent about $50 million on a new sports fieldhouse so I am sure they are going to market that to prospective students interested in attending a Catholic school.
Even though I am not a CHFL fan by any means, the kids and the programs are getting the short end of the stick here. The kids look forward to these camps to see what they got and what has to be improved on in the summertime. it is a good start off point for most programs and this is where team chemistry starts to develop. What a shame.
o my god iona just stop the only reason you won the championship was because st anthonys starting running back(all star) and quarterback(all star)were out just please stop
steven
Morons like you are the reason some Iona supporters get aggessive on these blogs. Just to clear a few things up for a turd like yourself the QB played the first game and Iona still routed them 41-21. The Championship game Iona put up 48 points and by the middle of the 4th quarter started replacing starters. So in two games Iona averaged 44.5 points against their defense. Go back into your cave you dumb ass.
I’ve followed the CHSFL since the late 1970’s, and Iona Prep is as established and credentialed a CHSFL team as say the Giants are to the NFL.
It’s ridiculous to beleive that this rule is aimed at Iona and intended to keep the “new team” down.
LI Football,
What is the exact Summer rule and how does it read in the bylaws? If that rule was written in 1959, is it still pertainable to the educational/athletic/technological environment that exists in 2009?
Who determines, as Mount’s coach said:
“1 week is fine”
“what the definition of out of control is”
“what is a level playing field”
“economic situation”
Is it “out of control” or “on a level playing field” if 1 school’s coaching staff attends multiple College Clinics, College Spring Practices, and meets with College Coaches over “multiple weeks” in the off-season to learn better ways to teach and then utilize an Offensive system when other school’s coaches can’t because of “an economic situation”???
Does the principal’s council just vote on rules, changes, and amendments without recommendations from the league executive committee? The principals committee didn’t just pick this issue out of the hat without someone complaining from the executive committee.
You mentioned this blog. Does that mean the principals council is now policing hs football blogs ala Obama’s thought police?
Where there is smoke, there is fire. Something smells about this situation. Iona attends team camps, does 11 on 11 work, wins AAA Championship, Mount doesn’t. Iona wants to continue, Mount coach is “among the league’s coaches who support the rule.”
Mr. Devaney even wrote this sentence about the Mount coach,” In his 24 seasons, he’s never taken his teams to an offseason camp or a 7-on-7 passing showcase.”
Look around, HS teams going to off season camps or 7-on-7 passing showcases are taking place all over the USA properly. Maybe it’s time to get involved for that school’s kids and not hold back other teams because they don’t.
Where there is smoke, there is fire. Something smells about this situation. Regardless of the vote results, someone complained up the tree.
A couple of thoughts.
Every student in every private school here or anywhere else for that matter,is recruited. Whether that student participates in any additional programs or not, much time, effort and money are invested attempting to convince that student and his or her family that their institution has something more or different to offer as opposed to their local school or other privates.
If some of the people out there think that the attraction of spending an additional 8 to 30 thousand dollars a year is that irresistable, your time would be better spent figuring out why your local school is not attrective to them in the first place. Private schools have understood COMPETITION for a long time and not just on the athletic field.
One more thought: If the powers that be in the CHSFL had a problem with the “level field” concept and how to handle the Camps my guess is that St Anthony’s will be banned from post season for about 90 years with that new sports complex.
Last thought: Have read a lot over the past season about the injuries that St Anthony’s had to deal with during the playoffs. It seemed everybody had the whole thing figured out. Given that fact that they were champions 7 years in a row I will assume that during that period they dealt with injuries from time to time. Funny but the only people that didn’t complain about this great misfortune was St Anthony’s themselves. The mark of a true champion.
Great to see the chatter about Rye going 1-3 to start the year. Can’t wait to see the what happens when Rye starts off 3-1. Remember this isn’t considered on “paper” Rye’s best team. They do return their QB and their second option RB but did lose a lot on the off and def lines. Can’t wait to see Dino get these kids believing in the program and playing with that chip on the shoulder.
10707:
great points and you are correct about st. anthony’s not complaining about 2 major injuries which is why they are true champions. imagine if tyrae and mack were injured and couldn’t play in the championship – they would have no chance and iona fans would remind you now and 50 years from now!!! that’s the difference between the 2 programs.
all this new rule comes down to is the fact that football is becoming a job rather than a sport done for enjoyment. from late august to thanksgiving football is 6 days a week for over three or four hours a day. With camps its becoming even more “job-like”. The principal’s responsibility is primarily academics and this can help make sure that they are the priority. More days of practice equals more injuries, less study time and less summer. I feel this is for the best keep football a game not a job
the only thing dino will be doing is complaining to the refs about bad calls….
...and then winning Championships.
For all high school football, there should be a limit as to how many spring and summer practices and camps that are held. It is tough to blame a kid for not wanting to play when you hear how much time commitment is required. Any good player knows there are only a certain amount of hits in your body before it breaks down. I have seen it first hand where you lose a star player because of the duration of the practices and reps. Kudos to the Mt. St. Michael guy for having a successful program and allowing his kids to be able to have a life. His actions should be applauded, not attacked.
?
As much as you wish you will neverbe able to take away the championship that iona won. What will be your excuse this year if iona wins another one. Isn’t it great to be a hater. Also why don’t you indicate the team that you support
st anthonys lost that game on defense. period. if their rb and qb were there it would have been 56-35 game. iona offense was that good. remeber three of iona best players didnt really have to do anything in the championship game. genero! WHAT IS YOUR PROBELM, I cant believe what your comment was. qb? who is your daddy? Tyrae is the best qb around here in the last. wait ever. name somewho was better. wait he was perfect! and Coach Vic should do what he wants. wait he was perfect in football and basketball. name a coach who has done that. Nonnnne! and kids are going to college and graduting hs. genero please keep quiet!
MSM Coach, Please retire already! Or get with it.
Your kids are underachiving, Jayson Holt, Southern Conn.?
He should have gone at least D1aa, but you wouldnt let him display his skills at CB. What a waste. Kids are smart for leaving MSM. I dont see you crying that New Row Stole your kids (Twins?) Come on be even with your dislike.
LET THEM PLAY , LET THEM PLAY, LET THEM PLAY.
Meanwhile you sneaking over to PA to scrimmage before August 10th, You just got beat thats all. MSM are Losers. MSM kids dont have the money to pay for camp? thats what you said, Host the camp and they wont have to pay. Laziness that all it is. Enough with you already. Retire Please.
So New York football can get better.
Ionaprepcrazed,
I don’t follow basketball, But, didn’t Iona lose in the last game they played? How does that make you perfect?
Rye will not be 1-3 if they lose the ossining. The be 3-1 or 2-2 at the most. Rye good but then losing to Ossining will not destroy Rye season. One more thing Coach Ricci will be shocked when his team plays Rye because I guess the ossining people do not relize how good rye is.
rye is overrated. they have a few good kids, but the rest are nothing special. they just have a team of 11 kids on the field who are all average and do their jobs. the reason they win is because there are no major weaknesses. their only two superstars are McCormick nd eck who are both very very good. ramalho is perfect proof of how overrated they are. he wasn’t a good fullback, just a big kid carrying the ball, a better lineman. but everyone saw him as amazing. i have seen a 115 lb cornerback get 7 solo tackles on him. rye is overrated and they will get beaten upon next year in A. end of story. i have played against them two years and i know. Dakota degree will tear their line apart and cause serious damage
outlawing scrimmages is such a stupid rule. The kids decide to play at these programs knowing well in advance the commitment it entails. Being committed to something like football for a whole summer builds strength and character as well as overall football ability. The kids aren’t complaining about having to go to these workouts, there excited they get extra time to put on the pads before their high school careers are over. People who want to outlaw off season camps are what is holding new york football back.
I go to school in florida, and every single school has 20 spring practices, concluding with a spring game vs another school. Sure it is a commitment, but kids want to play football and work to get better.
Anybody have any thoughts on the wide open race in Class B. Yes all coaches in B would have love to beaten Rye but believe me they don’t hate to see them go to Class A. From what I hear Sleepy is now the favorite after moving back down to Class B.
1. Sleepy Hollow
2. Edgemont
3. Nanuet
4. Westlake
5. Pville
Yes Dakota will have his way with ryes line but it will be half the plays cause he takes ever other snap off most over rated player in section 1. Yes he is a monster but you’ll never see him play a down on the next level
I wish the public school would go back to the way it used to be. All these “practices” and camps are getting crazy and way too time consuming.
If your kid plays more than one sport they are expected to participate in all of this. When do kids get a chance to be a kid.
When do they have a summer? It is all OVERKILL!
Player,
I see you have some really valid points…
“Rye is overrated”
What is it 60+ straight wins vs Section 1, 4 or 5 states titles, ya sounds overrated to me.
I see how you played Rye two times but you left off one piece of information. How bad did they crush you? How many times were you on your back when one of their small overrated lineman ran you over?
You can say Rye was always the biggest school in Class B but to say they are overrated is way off base.
ionaprepcrazed:
are you serious bad mouthing coach mario and saying msm are losers?
iona has one historic season and now all of a sudden you guys are the best at everything – get over yourself. i am not an iona alumni but if i was i would be embarassed at the comments you make. i am prettty sure you do not represent iona the way they want to be represented.
mario has a very credible football record and mount is all around a very good sports program. do your homework.
iona fans are the worst losers and the worst winners – very arrogant.
Anyone have a copy of the CHSFL rule book, and can someone please quote the rule exactly? Sounds to me like it’s ridiculous for this so-called “rule” to have been in place for “50-years” and yet for the last 20 it “hasn’t been enforced”. Are you kidding me????? That’s like saying, “well, we know there’s a rule against using ineligible players, but it hasn’t been enforced in years.” BS if a school used an ineligible player, you goddamn know other schools in the league would be pointing it out, and filing a complaint. Same as these camps that have been going on WITH EVERYONE’S KNOWLEDGE for years. To say this blog is responsible for “bringing it to the league’s attention” is moronic and idiotic. If that’s true, than either the league officials are buffoon’s or the league coaches are moron’s, one or the other. So, can anyone quote this exact rule?
are you serious
Even though you directed your comment at ionaprepcrazed I will say that no one that follows Iona Prep Football or any other major sport disrespects Mount. They have a great sports program and will always be a factor.
My problem with Valentini is that over the last several years he has acted like any player in the Mount Vernon/Bronx region is earmarked to attend Mount St. Michael. I have no doubt that he was personally behind this ruling because as the article stated Iona has used these camps to prepare their spread offense for the season. Mount St. Michael runs the wishbone so you will never see them at a 7-7 camp or even a team camp.
Why would a team who runs a wishbone not go to a team camp. That offense is based on power and miss direction witch takes timing and Persian. So ionapower please stop making uneducated post.
HUSKER98
I see that you are a football expert.
I stated that a team that runs the wishbone would not attend a 7-7 or even a team camp. Half the time at team camps teams are in 7-7 formations with a lot of passing. That would explain why the MSM coach stated he did not see the need to attend a team camp.
rye honestly has been overrated as of late. the reason they were able to win was because no one had a complete team. there were no big holes in their team and they were able to exploit other teams because there was no “bad” kid on their team. 11 kids on the field and all of them were able to do their job. when they go against bigger schools who are able to have 11 athletes on the field, (unlike the B schools who will only have 6 or 7 good players on the field), rye will get beat.
i am not trying to take anything away from rye. they were NYS champions and did go undefeated. they just aren’t the dream team everyone makes them out to be. their kids play hard and they have no apparent flaws, allowing them to exploit smaller teams in class B who cant always have 11 athletes on the field.
i cannot say anything about rye for the previous years because i didn’t play them. but last year they were overrated.they have two superstars on their team who will do very well. but u will see the team struggle in class A.
what I found interesting is that the Mount coach claimed some of his kids couldnt afford these camps.
SO HOW ARE THEY AFFORDING THE SCHOOL????
Mount’s tuition and fees last year was $6,850 and probably rised for the coming year.
MSM had many players also leave Mount Varsity and go to New Ro, at least 2 every year. Mount followers dont say anything about that.
Basketball Season Iona was perfect in their league play. You are a hater.
are you serious
I did my homework that is why I graduated with honors from Iona Prep, and most of my fellow alumni feel msm are losers. We are rivalry teams and that is what it is.
St. Anthony’s needed way more than a QB and RB.
If St. Anthony’s didn’t go for it on 4th down and keep the ball away from Iona Prep, Iona would’ve scored 80 points on them. That’s not an exaggeration. St. Anthony’s has ZERO clue how to stop the offense. Just like they have ZERO clue on how to stop St. Joe’s by the Sea. They need to adapt and they don’t.
You go to a team camp to work on everything offense, defense, team unity and things you don’t get a lot of time to work on like your passing attack for run first teams
Class B
I love the wide open race…I think Sleepy has a chance coming down from A…Just like Put Val does going down from B to C. Usually a team dropping down has some sort of run in them (last few years in the lower classes)
I like your top 5, though people underestimate Westlake..
————————————————-
So once again theres a whole CHSFL debate going on in here…LIke to or not, the Punishment that was voted on seems to be in line b/c of Iona and Stepinac, the “two CHSAA teams that do these camps”...
the camps are OPTIONAL…the MAIN ONE IN AUGUST is usually the mandatory one…the scrimmages then are part of the practices…
So for a coach to complain about these camps-just dont do them…its optional, or dont bring you A squad kids…bring the lower end of the roster and depth chart so they can get some work in…its kinda alike the Novice/Developmental Track Meets that High Schools have…
There’s alot of rules that are looked the other way, and the CHSAA finally voted to add a severe punishment…
I just saw Stepinac on Tuesday June 30th over at the School…seeing them doing their own 7 on 7 drills, and having their own mini camp looked ridiculous. You need 11 on 11 practices, especially the Wing T/Wishbone formations and other schemes that require a full line and timing/etc…
I find that funny the schools out in NYC and LI (SI is part of NYC) haven’t really picked up on the camps…especially b/c I hear how “amazing” and “perfect” and “big time” the two sections 8/11 and the LI based Catholic Schools are…
Ionaprepcrazed,
Hater? For what? I just thought you needed to win all your games to be perfect. Please stop hiding behind this hater stuff. I don’t even know where Iona is. I was just a bit confused with your logic. Kind of like saying New England had a perfect season even though they lost to the Giants in the super bowl.
The Donald
If you don’t know about Iona then why do you talk about them.
Maybe you should look at the ESPN Rise magazine rankings where Iona was the only team from New York to be ranked in the East. You are simply a TURD!
hey malone,
so, a team that goes 100-12 as the #1 power rated team in chsfl aaa since 1999 and has been in the aaa championship 15 of the last 16 years has ZERO CLUE?
please zip it, because you are giving you’re Irish brethren a bad name with that stupid comment.
Football is very important to the coaches at Iona,St Anthony’s, Mount,Farrell, Chaminade,St Joe’s,St Francis,Stepinac Holy Trinity and Holy Cross. These are the teams that every year go out and give it all they have to compete in the AAA. It is ridiculous to limit excellence. Unfair advantages are:# of students,# of boys and maybe a lack of facilities. Woody Hayes said that he had come up against smarter, faster, stronger, wealthier programs and coaches but had never found one that could outwork him!!The commitment these coaches make to being excellent isn’t cheating its industriousness!! Every one should strive to put the best team they can out there. In saying that I think Iona has attracted alot of attention for one AAA Championship. Those old island teams that are trying to “control” the league,St Francis 14 AAA,chaminade 13 AAA, St anthony’s 10 or 11 AAA Titles have worked pretty hard to be excellent. Congrats Iona,I think you did a great job last year and set the bar high, hopefully the challenge will be taken up by the other programs.
ionaprepcrazed:
says alot about iona if you graduated from honors lol! you represent them poorly – very arrogant.
malone:
so now you are criticizing st. anthony’s – haha i’m sure you can do a better job.
These blogs are getting funny-
You have people saying Rye is overated and will be 1-3 after 4 games.
You have people saying St. Anthony who is the number #1 football program in the State saying that they can’t adapt to Iona etc.
You have people saying Iona would have lost to St. Anthony last year because the QB and RB were out even though Iona averaged 44.5 points in two games.
Class B is going to be open, I see:
1)Sleepy Hollow
2)Nanuet
3)Pleasantville
4)Westlake
5)Edgemont???
So really big question marks for edgemont, i saw them working out with hackley and the looked very weak!
i understand the points about st. anthony’s defense – great – we get it and heard it over and over again. but give me a f-ing break. how could you take lightly the fact that in the CHAMPIONSHIP game st. anthony’s STARTING QB & RUNNING BACK WERE OUT!!!!! yes i agree their defense needed help – but what about the psychological factor of going in to a game and knowing that your 2 best key players on your team are out – c’mon!!! not taking anything away from iona – great season 100 percent. but please put things into perspective – ex: if paul gasol and kobe bryant couldn’t play in the finals – ummm i wonder who would have won!
i mean john malone are you serious????? you lose all credibility and don’t deserve to blog anymore for that insane comment.
ionapower:
you make very good points regardless to being pro-iona you give credit where credit is due – but you have to admit their are some bloggers on this site that shed a bad light on iona – you of course do not.
?
I understand your points about st anthony not having two very excellent players whose absence did have an impact but when you have a defense that gave up over 40 points in both games I still think iona would have handled them. The st. Anthony defense did not have the speed to handle woodson and mack. Also the st .anthony program has by far the most depth in the league and.did have a number of backs that were very tough.
As far as fans go I believe every school will have ones that will say controversial things that will get under peoples skin.
I do try and keep it real and I believe I stated that iona will have some losses in the league this year because every game in the aaa is tough. I do believe that they have a good chance to repeat without any major injuries because thet do not have the depth of a st anthony. Last year st.anthony had around 25 linemen over 225 pounds
Rye has a tradition of being very disciplined. You can say they execute plays with robotic precision. Those who say Rye players “do their jobs” are absolutely on the money. To out coach Dino Garr is a major challenge in chess. Coaches will be praying for their speedsters to bail them out this season. I don’t see Rye struggling one bit.
?
Your right. At any level, especially high school, a team not having their starting QB or RB is going to be at an extreme disadvantage. Your points above I believe are exactly correct.
As an Iona supporter I am embarrased by Iona Prep crazed personnal comments. As for Iona power we know who you are. You do have incite to some of the Iona issues but you do not know about what happens behind closed doors.
The fact is it is a good thing for the student/football players that the league limts 11 on 11. I can remember back to the New Roe camp where the Iona and Harrison coaches got so angry with one another over when going 11 on 11 that even their own players were laughing at the adults. ( You can not debate this , it is fact)
It was time to take some pressure off the kids with the intensity of the 11 on 11 camps. The studetns will know have some free time to themselves to concentrate on SAT prep and enjoying their summer in HS.
Arrogant . i dont think so. you are just mad msm is not power they once were.
Saying Rye is overrated is dead wrong. They won two championships in a row, in a class they belonged in. The reason people regard them so highly is because even though they are on top they still work hard every week and come out on fridays or saturdays to win. Incase anyone forgot they have gone the last two seasons undefeated. Though they don’t have a team of D1 prospects, that doesn’t mean they have to good players.
Player,
#1. Saying that Eck and McCormack are the only superstar tells me that you only read the papers and make your judgements. If you had seen any of last years games or caught any of the Iona camp, you would have seen junior and sophmore contributions. Brendan Nagle (25) is a standout linebacker, who can also run the ball and play some tight end. Charlie Rollins (58) and Brian Levinson (64), will be effective lineman on both sides of the ball. Also Jack O’Callaghan (14), who will be a junior this year, is great on offense, defense, and special teams, he is quite elusive. Rye has depth in names most people in Rye wouldn’t even realize. Don’t count them out yet.
#2. Don’t take shots at Kyle for playing where he did. He may not have been the same player in A or AA, but for what he was, he was number 1 the last two years.
Genero
I am glad that you think you know who I am and I can tell you that I know more than you think about what goes on but I am smart enough to limit what I share on a public forum.
As far as your comment about the Harrison – Iona coaching skirmish it revolved around the fact that Coach Artie was standing 5 yards behind the MLB during an 11-11 drill. It also might have something to do with in that particular year he knew that a few players were not going to attend Harrison that he really liked with one being the future QB in Tim Perley. This happened at the camp 2 years ago. Last year all sides acted professionally.
I have been following Iona for a long time so if you do not feel that I offer any insight than that is your perogative.

You are so correct about Rye. I came away very impressed after the Iona Camp. It was not about how they did against Iona or New Rochelle but about the quality depth of players they had for a school smaller than both Iona and New Rochelle.
If anyone thinks they are not Class A contenders will be in for a rude awakening. Nyack, Ossining and Rye will battle it out until the end with seeding playing a big role in the playoffs.
Rye is stronger than many people think. While going undefeated, Rye often replaced its starters with 2nd, 3rd and 4th string players. So although they lose some of its name players, they return with a very experience team.
Rye is also bigger than many people realise. Returning lineman include Charlie Rollins (6ft 3in), Brian Levinson (6ft 3in & 285lbs) and Brian Powers (6ft 4in. & 240lbs). Running backs will get plenty of blocking, Conner Eck will be protected and once again a new batch of Rye heroes will emerge.
thank you
Class A please don’t beat up on poor old Rye, you know the school with the smallest enrollment in Class A.
Every year for the last 7 + years we here about all the players Rye is losing to graduation and all Dino does is just win. For a small school Rye just keeps plugging in a new set of solid kids each year. When Rye beats Ossining on opening day Class A will wish Rye stayed in Class B.
What a game that Rye vs Ossining will be or should I say Garr vs Ricci. You have two really solid and aggressive coaches. It will be interesting to see who goes for it more on 4th down in their own territory. I am sure each coach is preparing already for that game. Rye’s extreme discipline approach vs O’s speed. Can’t wait for this game… I have final Rye 24-21 with Eck throwing a late touchdown.
IONAPREPCRAZED
the last time i looked msm had a down year last year but previous 2 lost to st. anthony in championship game.almost won both times.still a strong program and do not know whole story on mario but feel his record over time is 100%. i do agree iona is tops in football and basketball right now and they should enjoy it.sometimes this blog gets carried away.
mrvolo
I hope you are staying cool in Florida.
I do not know if you are aware but the CHSAA A has realigned their divisions in basketball. Next year should be some race as Iona Prep, Stepinac, Hayes, and Mount will be beating up on each other.
iona power,
thanks for update.iona still team to beat in baskets.mount will be good but need a good pg.wil is all set at RIC,and i am impressed with program.their coach stays in touch with him an he even sent me a few e mails.i guess he wants me to show them how not to shoot free throws.
going to marlin games.parking 10$ and many games 1/2 price tickets.just like NY.
will spent 6 weeks up north for summer, with my 59th straight year watching the horses at saratoga.if i could write i would do a book.
happy 4th and lets thank god for our great country.
mrvolo
Glad to hear you are doing well- Mount will have a good basketball year as he had 3 sophomores up last year that will fill the guard roles this year. Iona – Mount will once again be highly contested like they were last year.
All the best to you and your family.
Neither Ossining or any other class A team will carry the ball North on Rye. All teams will have to break away on the outside. Rye’s success is weighed heavily on outside containment. Success against Rye will weigh heavily on outside speed. An albany school once proved this point by eliminating Rye from state play by way of speed. The only teams that have this kind of total speed is Ossining and Nyack.
Note that the speed has to be very exceptional and Rye probably will not flinch anyway; afterall, Harrison moved up from Class B as well and immediately became a top tier class A Power that happened to lose to Rye every time!!!

You forgot sleepy in that discussion, let them and try to bracket the ends and man up on the outside, and see what sleepy does to them…it wont be fair! Its a whole new hollow this year, just watch!
Soooo, I guess all you CHSFL guys are full of crap because A) none of you even has a CHSFL Rule Book, and B) none of you even know the exact rule.
Im hearing a lot of good things about Sleepy this year, especially with them moving down to Class B….Who are their top players coming back this year? Did they make the playoffs last season?
What ever happened to poor Pelham?
2007 Sectional runner-up, almost beat Rye twice
2008 lost their best player to injury and narrowly missed the playoffs
2009 winless?
Class B is going to be a very fun to watch this year these are my rankings.
1. Pleasantville- They have a lot of players returning on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Also they are very well coached too.
2. Sleepy Hollow- They are coming down from A and they have a pretty good quarteback returning and they are always tough kids.
3. Nanuet- Hanney is a very good quarterback and I really like the running backs that they have this year.
4. Edgemont- Not always a very tough team very soft. But there coaches always seem to keep them in in games.
5. Irvington or Briarcliff- Irvington has a strong core of running backs coming back and Briarcliff has two good wide receivers back and their qb is experienced

sorry duplicates
Poughkeepsie Kid commits to U/Conn
Ruben Frank OLB/DE verbally comitted to U/Conn today..even though he is not in Westchester just mabe he makes your top 11??
One more thing Ossining and Rye will lose to lakeland and Poughkeepsie, and somers. Do not dubt these three teams. The will be dangerous.
IonaPower,
Dude, are you like Mr Iona. Do you wear Iona underware to bed at night, brush your teeth with your little Iona toohbrush, kiss the Iona sports pictures goodnight when you tuck yourself into your Iona sheets and turn off your Iona night Light. Get out and enjoy life. It’s a great big Non- Iona world out there.
The Donald
I actually bought my wife for Christmas an Iona Bikini for our Spring Trip to Puerto Rico. LOL
the donald. there are such things as mobile email on cell phones. u can be at pool with ur wife and get on blogs now. i kiss my iona prep picture good night right after i kiss my kids good night.
ad for birth control right there
No one knows who rye will beat this season, But everyone knows that they are going to come to play and bring everything they have got.
FFball,
I think Pville will be good but I think putting them 1st in Class B is a little aggressive. I hear they have a nice QB- WR combo. Two 6-5 basketball players- Nolan Robinson PG/QB passing to Jack Bramswig C/WR. Seems like with that height at WR you will be looking to throw it up there and take your chances with your 6-5 WR vs the avg 5-10 DB
First of all Rye will be very good this year. Coach Dino G is to good of a coach to have a bad year. Also does anyone know if george apostleopolous tyrae, mack, gadson, hilton are getting any college looks.
Rams287
This is what I have heard-
George Apostolopeous – D1 AA
Tyrae Woodson -D1 AA
Jeff Mack – Big East
Greg Gadson -Big East or D1AA
Morris Hilton -D1 AA
Jordan Bronner -D1 in Basketball
Securing an Athletic Full Ride is a tricky business so things can change very quickly.
Ruben Frank is not in the journal news coverage area.
Pleasantville gots a very strong offensive and defensive line coming back the offense hasn’t really proved themselves except Jack Bramswig. The rest of the backfield and the quarterback didn’t get a lot of playing time on offense. So they are going to have to prove themselves to show everyone that they are the number 1 team in class B
frank highlight film doesnt look that impressive. but congrats. he likes to arm tackle.
ionaprep crazed:
i guess uconn likes kids who arm tackle – you are a clown oh i mean honors student – stay off the blogs. if it is not an iona kid to you then noone is good. you probably have a poster off jeff mack in your room you tool!!!
Congrats to the POK DE on the scholarship from Buffalo. People do not realize how difficult it is for a player to receive football offers. You might see 10-15 kids in the entire state earn a division 1A scholarship. Also Turner Gill has turned around the Buffalo program in the tough Mid American conference.
Reginald…great comment! Ionaprepcrazed, I have read your comments on thsi thread and if you are actually a parent, you should be embarrassed. Better yet, if you are an actual adult, its even worse. Have some etiquette you clown
any news on the kennedy-somers-gorton camp?
football playa
who do you play for? you clown
Kevin,
Time for a new piece.
This exchange has run out of gas.
Happy Fourth!
Rye looked ok, new ro was ok, and so was Iona. Last years teams would have crushed all of this years teams. The talent at the camp was way better last yea. Its sad not to see players like Rahamlo, Darlos James and Termine wiliiams. I think they will all have solid years but Ionas backers need work. Hilton is very good dont egt moe wrong but the Kid Ferrero from Harrison is awful. Hes too cokey, he has a swager but has no game. The only hits he gives out are cheap shots. He needs to be coached up or hes gonna get ran over. His otball Iq is low.

ITS SMART HOW NON OF YOU QUESTION NEW ROCHELLE, CLEARLY YOU ARE ALL AWARE OF THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOUR LITTLE TEAMS AND THE BIG BOYS, HAVE FUN WATCHING YOUR LITTLE LEAGUE GAMES ILL WATCH THE REAL THING
JUST KIDDING (ABOVE), I WOULD LOVE TO SEE ST. ANTHONY;S PLAY NEW RO, OR EVEN RYE/NEW RO, I KNOW THAT NR IS A BIGGER SCHOOL THAN THE OTHERS, BUT I STILL THINK IT WOULD BE A BETTER GAME THAN MOST. NEW RO PLAYING GORTON, LINCOLN, OR MOUNT VERNON IS GETTING TO BE A BIT BORNING, IT FEELS LIKE THE REG SEASON IN AA IS JUST A FORMALITY SO NEW RO CAN PLAY N. ROCKLAND THEN THE PLAYOFFS, MAYBE SOME INTER LEAGUE RIVALRIES WOULD BE FUN. NEW RO IONA USED TO BE A GREAT GAME REGUARDLESS OF THE TWO TEAMS RECORDS, THEY BOTH ALWAYS PLAYED HARD.
Ionaprepjackoff.. I played a long time ago so it has no bearing on the conversation. All that matters is you are a horrible representation of your school. And its a blessing you are a liar about having kids. Learn from a guy like Iona Power. He has class and intelligence when he posts. He is a huge fan, but he doesn’t come across as a bozo like you.
Remember This
Great post – The CHSFL has a great website for previous information.
I have a few follow up points.
St. Anthony- These numbers show the elite program they have been since the the late 1980’s. It also shows how they have taken advantage of the decline of St. John the Baptist who was a power program in the mid 1980s.
Farrell- Even though the last two years have been difficult this is still an elite program in the league as well as the area. The big point is that up until a few years ago Farrell was the only Catholic school in Staten Island that had a football program. Farrell has started to decline because of the emergence of St. Joseph by the Sea. St. Josephs is now a CHSFL AAA power who is taking a lot of players away from Farrell.
St. Francis- A long time CHSFL AAA power that is trying to emerge after 10 years of falling off the CHSFL AAA radar. St. Francis is a huge school (3 time the size of Iona) that should have a power program.
Chaminade – A long time power in Long Island but is in the shadow of St. Anthony. Should continue to be competitive.
Mount St. Michael – Very good program that will always attract great athletes because of its location. Mount is a great alternative to student athletes in the Bronx who do not want to attend Bronx public schools.
Iona Prep – Very small school compared to the rest of the CHSFL AAA schools. If the coaching staff continues to run an attractive spead offense it should attract players to the program which should allow Iona to at least compete on a yearly basis.
Xaverian- Dangerous program as they are in a great location. Attracts kids from all over Brooklyn plus parts of Saten Island.
St. Joseph in Staten Island- Nasty rivalry with Farrell with both trying to have the best team in Staten Island.
Watch out for New Ro this year. Their speed can turn a game around. I noticed at the camp that when NR ran the ball inside and failed, they just ran a toss outside and scored. 1 thing I noticed was that they were switching up which linemen were playing which positions. Next few camps will show how that situation pans out. Its hard to judge Rye after the camp though. They were going up against the two best teams in the area and still did well. I think that Ryes little line twists and flea flickers worked in class b but might not work in class a due to the better talent. And finally Iona looked good, but its really hard to tell with the 7 on 7 scrimmage. No cutbacks or split second where the safety and linebackers need to make their reads. All three schools looked good and will most likely have great seasons.
New Rochelle is going to scrimmage St. Anthony’s this year and I hear it’s going to be the same thing as New Canaan – Iona was last year, they’re going to play it like a real game, just without kickoffs so it doesn’t count as a game.
WHEN IS THAT SCRIMMAGE. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IT, DOES ANYONE KNOW?
st anthonys scrimmaging new ro will be like vanilla ice battling mc hammer. they playing against the same type offenses. should be a hard hitting affair. ask wagstaff who continually got run over by brady while he was at iona. then ran home to new ro. then they scrimmge st anthony’s and guess what brady ran him over again. lol
ionaprepcrazed:
why do you still write on these blogs?
you continue to make iona look bad.
ha
?
If I stop you would nothing to do.
I heard mcghee is coming back to new ro. that he just didnt want to do the camps.
Iona..you are the biggest ahole ever to come on the blogs. Get a life
mcghee isnt coming back and new ro will scrimmage st anthonys sept 5 at st anthonys….
iona sucks 1 championship and they are the best team in the world i hate everything about that place
football fan
New Rochelle used to have a huge Labor Day scrimmage with the likes of St. Anthony, North Rockland, Canarsie, JFK and Tottenville. Any idea why that concept was discontinued.
St. Anthony will certainly be great prepararion for New Rochelle to get ready for the season as they will be the best team they see all year.

You have come on this board and ripped Iona in the past. You sound like you are a bitter and jealous individual- Why don’t you indicate what school you support so I can understand why you “hate” Iona. Nothing like “hating” 15-17 year old kids attending school and playing football.
Steven
From reading your previous comments about Iona it just shows that you are one of the bigger TURDS on this blog!!!
Case in Point BELOW IS ONE OF YOUR POINTLESS COMMENTS

o my god iona just stop the only reason you won the championship was because st anthonys starting running back(all star) and quarterback(all star)were out just please stop
it will be interesting to see how iona will be without players like alfano / darlos…and now rumors that bronner is not playing – those players at the high school level are almost impossible to replace. but with the experience of mack and samuels is big. the league will be real strong, competitive, and a lot of parity – looking forward to it!
ionaprepcrazed:
can you please just let ionapower do the blogging for iona.
?
You can’t replace players like Darlos and Alfano- Darlos was a 4 year starter and a great team player- His first 2 years he had more touches than his last 2 years as he deferred to Mack.
Alfano was a very good High school WR that agve teams like St. Anthony and Mount a hard time.
If Bronner does not play that will be a terrible blow because he is simply one of Iona’s 5-7 best players.
The CHSFL AAA is loaded this year. Already a lineman from Holy Cross signed with Virgina and a Defensive Back form Xaverian signed with Syracuse. St. Anthony has a lineman that was already offered by Big East Schools.
Iona Prep will have its hands full because the schedule is brutal. St. Anthony, St. Joseph from SI, Holy Trinity from LI and Xaverian are on the road. Chaminade, Holy Cross and Farrell at home plus Bergen Catholic at the Meadowlands. Very rough – I can see Iona having 2-3 losses before the playoffs but still having a shot at winning the CHSFL AAA because everyone in their league will be bunched up with 2-4 losses. Last year Iona and St. Anthony were the only teams in the league with less than 3 losses.
? WELL SAID!
Prediction,
If newro and st anths play a real scrimmage, st anths will beat them up physically and on the board. If it is a controlled scrimmage it will be closer. i give new ro a ton of credit for playing a school like st anths because while it might get them ready for the season it might also get them hurt.
DBP,
new ro has scrimmaged st anthonys for many years now in game situation type drills, and has more than often held their own. The JV beat st anthonys a few years ago in fact.
With IONA not going to champion camp this year at New Rochelle High school it appears that this camp has or will lose some of it’s lust. When Iona and Harrison squared off against each other you would think it was a playoff game in mid November and not a summer league scrimmage. With Eastchester, Harrison and Roosevelt all in the same league it might leave this camp as dull as dull can be. Eastchester never has scrimmaged Harrison for some reason and now with Roosevelt in their league it could be interesting to see who scrimmages who.
Something that might tweak the interest of some people in attendance would be rival boarders eastchester vs tuckahoe
lets make it happen coaches.
IonaPower,
We technically didn’t discontinue our “Labor Day Jamboree”. it’s just that with the crazy way Section 1 has us starting the pre-season, the scrimmage dates don’t work out with those schools. Because some of the Superintendents got together and screwed around with our start date, we’ve had to start later than the rest of NY State. This year the rest of the State begins on Monday Aug. 17th, but we have to wait until Friday Aug. 21st. Most teams first game week is Sept. 5th, but that will be our scrimmage date. If the Superintendents ever get their act together and let Section 1 start when the rest of NY State does, we’ll put that scrimmage back together. If that happens, and the dates match up with Connecticut, I would bet CT State powers New Cannaan, Greenwich and Masuk would join in as well, and that would be a great day of football!

It has to be frustrating trying to maintain an excellent program with all these types of restrictions. Nevertheless St. Anthony will provide you with the type of test that will get you ready for the season. They are the type of team that will exploit a weakness in their opponent.
Iona Prep and Greenwich have scrimmaged over the last several years which has helped in preparing for the CHSFL AAA season.
I remember two years ago I went to the Iona-Greenwich scrimmage at 10.00 am and then shot down the Hutch for your Labor day scrimmages. That was a great day of football.
Keep up the great work at New Rochelle.
Mr. Fagan,
You think Sec 1 is screwed up, think about the CHSFL and when their start date is, 1 full week after the rest of NY, August 24th. With that, the CHSFL teams only get 1 scrimmage day, Sept 5th, before the 1st game. With the CHSFL new rules limiting Team Camp opportunities(no 11-11 situations and only 2 Camps-direct hit @ Iona and Stepinac), teams that are willing to challenge themselves in their non-league game from within NY or out of state, are behind the 8 ball. Iona’s challenge of playing Bergen Catholic at the Meadowlands will be a tall task considering when Bergen Catholic is gonna start and the 3 scrimmages they will have participated in besides the 7-7’s they will have attended over the summer. Oh well.
I hate to defend the AD’s but common. When are these coaches going to be happy? When the season begins in June. If you want that much action go coach College. Two weeks before school starts should be mandatory for all schools. If you can not get your kids ready to play ball with in that time go do something else.
Hello,
Your comment makes no sense. The Winter and Spring Sports get one month of practice before games start. All we in Section 1 are asking for is to be the same as the rest of NY State. Why should the Section 1 football teams have to start days after the rest of the State. Are you proposing that basketball and baseball only have two weeks of practices before they play games?
I was not expecting it to make any sense to you since it went against what you orginally posted. What I proposed was for the start of the season be for all of New York and therefore no one would have a leg up on anyone. I am not against spring practices under some sort of limits. It just seems the more I read these blogs, the more coaches are pushing for football to become a fulltime sport. It is ridiculous. And you can’t compare the other sports since football is the most grueling on the body. No other sport is even close. Just my opinion. Good luck this year regardless.
Football season is required by the NY State Federation to start & complete its season in 15 weeks. The CHSFL plays its senior bowl inside that 15 week period [ so it is covered by insurance] Senior bowl takes place one week after Thanksgiving. That is why the league has late starting date. I guess the league could eliminate senior bowl or play it on Championship weekend.
No team in CHSFL has had more than one scrimmage date in a long time. Teams could elect not to play bye week & get two more scrimmages in if they wished. Many teams have been choosing to go out side league for games on that date. Section 1 starts on Aug 17th because of the state playoffs. Some teams will end there season on Halloween so a couple of teams can go to State.
come on section 1 get it together, let these teams play, and find a way to get the big rivalries back (iona-new ro, etc…) stop the bs and make it right. a six game season, that is stupid, no other place in the country has such a short season, get to work and make it happen, its for the kids and the community that is the only thing you should have in your mind when you make rules, NOTHING ELSE!!!!! LET THEM PLAY LET THEM PLAY
