Crusader Watch

I have already seen a few Public School backers already proclaim that Iona and Stepinac are stealing players. The facts are that Iona and Stepinac provide a great overall environment.

As a youth coach who sends kids both public and private schools I feel compelled to weigh in...

Its very simple NO SCHOOL IS ENTITLED TO A CERTAIN KID.

Let me first address the fact that Private schools recruit. YOU DAMN RIGHT THEY RECRUIT. But that’s because they have to or they will go out business. They recruit STUDENTS!!! That’s their business. They have to recruit students in order to remain open. And yes some of those students are athletes. But trust me the schools are going out looking for the best students as hard as coaches are looking for the best athletes. It’s the entire mentality of the Private school. That’s why colleges come visit schools. They need to recruit to keep their doors open. Same thing with private high schools.

Now public schools RECRUIT as well. In NYC they have to recruit because a kid has way more options than a kid in Westchester. Westchester coaches would not make it in NYC where they have to compete with 5 other schools in their area for players. How many kids have moved to attend a high school for their sports? How many youth programs run the high school system, and dress just like the High School. The publics are trying to instill pride in their H.S. program in 9 year old kids as soon as they play organized sports. I don’t see any White Plains Crusaders out there… or Iona Baby Gaels. or Fordham Prep Jr. Rams. So lets not act like the public schools are at a disadvantage out there.

Now on to my real point. Private school simply isn’t for everyone. Some students can handle a private school education and some kids cant. Then out of the students that can some parents can afford it and some cant. The private schools deal with a relatively small pool of kids. Every kid can’t get in, every kid wont last, and every kid cant afford the school. Parents and students need to find the best fit for them and for some yes its private school. So like it or not the reason why the private school league is better OVERALL is because its easier to teach above average football when you have above average students!

What do you think?

ionapower:
i agree completely but we will always lose that argument with the publics - it seems to go only one way. when a kid transfers out of an iona or stepinac the publics look at it like the kid is back to where they belong - it is the family's decision - period!

Its all about what a family thinks is best for their child. I never hear anyone form Iona , Mount, Stepinac etc complain when a player transfers out after their FR or So year. What about the JV coach who devoted his time for that player too then watch that player take all the instruction learned to a public school?

iona power:
and that's an entirely other issue. when a kid goes to the private rather then public that happens routinely especially in the city / bronx. it goes back to the entitlement that the respective public school district thinks they have over a kid - it's crazy! but the poublics don't want to hear that end, they just want to hear that iona or mount..etc took their kid - it's actually pretty funny!

Get outta... Yes I do. Last year Scalo played hurt. This year he will be healthy and is quicker and stronger. Very tough to defend.

To Section 1... In the end MW or whomever it maybe faces a section 1 opponent. So I am not crazy to be checking out this blog. It is very informative. Many of the bloggers here, go to other sites to gather info as well.

You are correct- The fact is that no one forces kids to attend Farrell, Iona , Stepinac etc...

I also know for a fact that some Public School coaches have called kids on Iona while they were attending the school to see if they would transfer. One coach even called a kid who at the time was playing on the JV to indicate that he would play on the varsity.

ionapower:
dont even waste your time defending the chsfl on the recruiting issue. some of the public schools have fedor programs from the 3rd grade up and those coaches feel those kids belong to them and there is an obligation to attend the public school - if that isn't recruiting then i don't know what is - it is the biggest joke! mvernon bball's 5th grade teams run the same system that the varsity high school teams run ...hhmmmmm i wonder if that is an advantage???
and if that's the case then the private schools shouldn't have sports and everyone should go to public school.
