NJ tops Northeast

June
7

We knew New Jersey football was better than New York. Apparently, the Garden State is better than the whole Northeast combined.

New Jersey rallied for a 13-7 victory in today’s New Jersey vs. Northeast All-Star Football Classic at Rutgers Stadium.

As you’ll read, the game ended on a Josh Evans took a lateral on an interception and returned it 70 yards for the winning touchdown as time expired. Northeast had the ball and was driving with 17 seconds to go when the pass was intercepted. Evans, a state champion track star, will play defensive back for Florida.

We actually had three local products playing in the game — Rob Lombardo of Somers, Darlos James of Iona Prep and Kevin Royal, a White Plains native who played received at Brunswick. I apologize for leaving him out of my previous post. He’ll attend Virginia.

Lombardo (Navy) played fullback and caught two screen passes. I spoke late tonight to James (Maine), who had five tackles and nearly intercepted a pass.

Darlos started at cornerback over two kids going to UConn and was matched up against Nick Williams (UConn), Quoron Pratt (Rutgers) and future Maine teammate Kendall James. By the fourth quarter, NJ stopped throwing in James’ direction.

“I believe I proved myself,” said James, who saved a touchdown with an open field tackle. “I can walk away looking at this whole thing as a positive. There were a lot of guys going to D-1A schools, and they really aren’t all what they’re made out to be. I feel like I’m right there with them. I know if I continue to work as hard as I’ve been, I’ll be good.”

If you were there or watched the game on TV (it will be replayed on the NFL Network), please provide us with some details.

You can click here for the full rosters for both teams.

Starting tomorrow, I’ll be on vacation for seven days. I’m not taking any trips. Just a lot of golf and walking around in flip flops and t-shirts. If you have any movie recommendations, please let me know.

The Big Apple Shootout is on Saturday at White Plains, which I plan to attend as a fan. I’ll blog my thoughts when I get back to work on Monday.

The following week will be highlighted by Ray Rice Day in New Rochelle. It’s scheduled for Saturday, June 20 and will include a festival and football clinic at New Rochelle High. Ray will be there, obviously. And Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco is scheduled to appear, as well.

After that we’ll be knee-deep in football camps. The Carmel 7-on-7 is set for Friday, June 19, with the famed Lineman Challenge scheduled for the following day. If you have any information on 7-on-7s or camps, please drop us a line.

  10. FYI...

Former Port Chester assistant Greg “Shoes” Vetrone will be named the new head Coach at Farliegh Dickinson Univ.
Lets hope he can recruit a better “quality” of player to FDU than he did to Port Chester.

  11. Hoops fan

    fyi,
When was Vetrone an assistant at PortChester?

  12. Baseball News

congrats to stepinac for winning their 3 division title in the past 5 years and making it to the championship game friday night @st.john’s. good job crusaders and coach pat duffy!

  13. section 1

    Kevin,
how is the local talent doing this year in aau? has anyone been making a big impact on the college recruiting?

  14. gaels

hey kevin is their any truth to jonny mcghee being canned at new rochelle. If so who will be the starting qb?

  15. ionaprep crazed

New Ro Qb is canned? any info out there? How could his career have gone so sour?

  16. FYI...

    Hoops Fan,

Vetrone was an assistant for two years 2006-2008, in the middle of the are they recruiting players era to PC, I’m not sure but I have heard that Lou Larizza Jr. was a redshirt Freshman at FDU this past season, isn’t it ironic that “Shoes” ends up at FDU.Things that make you Hmmmmmm.

  17. Lineman Challenge

we Go hArd the lineman challenge is a team competition. who does your son play for?

  18. Wazzuny88

Does anyone know where Dan Sheeran decided to transfer to?

  20. Croton Sport Fan

Just had a message from Coach Bill Thom regarding arrangement for his mother (Pauline):

    Arrangements are as follows:
    Wake: Carter’s Funeral Home, Croton
    Sunday 2-4 & 7-9

Mass: Holy Name in Croton at 10:00 a.m. on Monday
    Burial following at Bethel

  21. 10960

This Rye 7 on 7 is one to see!!!

  22. DF

There are alot of starters on the DF football team that cannot participate in the 7 on 7 because they play baseball and will be at states this weekend in binghamton

  23. Mrs. Sanchez

Iona Prep will be at the Rye 7 on 7

  24. gaels

    iona prep crazed

I heard that Jonny Mcghee pushed coach d to far. From what i understand Jonny wasnt attending any of the off season lifts and coach d called him and said we have to have a meeting and mcghee didnt show. Coach d must have had enough of the immature games. The starter if this is all true will be Lewis Edney. He is very good has potential to be better than mcghee. He ran a 4.65 40 at the combine and can throw well.

  25. ionaprep crazed

wow!!!! Isnt Johny Mcghee a senior. What a waste?

  26. The Boss

Mcghee choked 2 years in a row… most over rated player in Section 1

  27. Rileygirl

The Boss, you are correct. Mcghee is a youngin and we all make mistakes, however, you dont compound your mistakes by ( allegedly) blowing off workouts and the coach. New Ro was in the posistion to win the past two games against section 9 and the youngster had a big hand in them not winning. Last years gaffe was comparible to what the Yanks did in Boston the past three days.

  28. 10801

Now Mcghee might have made mistakes, but i really dont think you can call him over rated. He lead the team down the stretch last year, and if he had let the kicker kick the field goal in the monroe game, would have been considered a hero for driving new ro down the field with very little time left. Also the previous year, if two guys go unblocked and hit mcghee in the back, i think a little of the blame has to go on the blockers and not mcghee for fumbling. Now i don’t think any of us really know whether he will be playing or not, but the kid has had a productive new rochelle career and really doesn’t deserved to be bashed as of yet, because none of us know the circumstances right now

  29. 10960

Any word on the 7 on 7 scrimmages?

  30. NR

for anyone to say mcghee is overated is totally wrong if mcghee ever got injured last year or the year before the newrochelle team would be messed up he was the most valuable person newrochelle had the last two years he is a freak of nature if you really know him he mad one mistake which cost them the game but you cant take that one play away from his sucess and if he run that in he is a hero so stop with this b.s

  31. 10801

lol mvp last year, definitely not the year before though

  32. gaels

not even last year tremayne williams carried that team whenever they needed a play

  33. jones

Freak of nature, lol, this kind of talk about a good athlete is why the kid apparently is acting the way he does, he’s not headed to the NFL where the real freaks are!

  34. 10960

There’s over a thousand players in section 1…... If there’s a pro long debate on whether one kid is good or not….. thats a compliment in favor of the kids talent.

  35. IonaPower

I think at the end of the day things will work out for Mcghee and he will be taking snaps. Losing Mcghee would be a tough blow for New Rochelle becuase he is a senior with a lot of big game experience.

  36. section 9

He has done alot of choking in big games i guess you can call that experiance

  37. 10801

monroe has also done a lot of choking in the state championship

  38. section 9

At least we get there! And we will be there this year, our team is loaded.

  39. IonaPower

    section 9

No need to trashtalk a class program like New Rochelle who year in and year out has a top team.

  40. big dave

section 9 must hav alot of time on his hands to be cross county trash talkin on a blog ahahahaha. nobody pay any attention to this kid he prolly rides the bench and rides the coat tails of the other guys on the team to gain a false sense of accomplishment. next time u find yourself with some spare time try interent porn u goon hahahaha

  41. new ro

    section 9

i wouldnt be talking to much because you guys gained 120 total yards last year if that and the only reason you won is because off a blocked punt and mcghee pulling the ball off the tee soo i wouldnt be so confident because new rochelle’s offense is much better this year with or without mcghee. They had 8 kids run between a 4.5 and 4.65 at a combine. Names to learn are sirtay jackson a transfer full back safety from georgia, Jordan lucas is a gonna be a good 2 way player at halfback and corner, and Lewis Edney will replace mcghee if rumors are true, the kid runs a 4.6 and can throw as well he has looked very good playing qb at spring ball and is gonna be one of new rochelles best defensive players as well

  42. section 9

HAHAHAH you all are hysterical. When you finally beat MW then open your pathetic mouths. Don’t hate, prove it on the field. We obviously do. Iona Power you are a recruiting catholic school and all you do is talk smack, so butt out.

Big Dork..if I have time on my hands what is your excuse for mentioning internet porn? Your nothing more than a 50 yr old single loser living his HS dream while exercising his palm!

  43. get out of here

    Section 9

You honestly have no right to be writing on this blog considering new ro clearly beat themesleves 2 years in a row. It was like the mets a couple of nights ago wen castillo dropped the pop up. The yanks didn’t deserve the win, nor did monroe. Go to monroe nd prepare to meet new ro again, cuz this year they’re not gonna blow it like they have in the past. Nd I hope wat u say about ur team being stacked is true, cuz ur gonna need it this year. Nd tell ur boy scalo to watch it cuz new ro’s goin for his head wen you both meet again this year.

  44. 10801

scalo is the tim tebow of new york state football, puts up all these numbers, yet wont be anything at the next level. Go choke in the dome again section 9.

  45. IonaPower

    section 9

Why don’t you ask your coach how come Monroe backed out of playing Iona Prep in the opening game last year???

  46. section 9

Get out of here… spend more time in English class instead of a blog. Your grammar is awful. And you are an awful representation of New Ro.

10801 another intelligent comment. New Ro needs to get to the dome, before you talk smack. You sound like a 8yr old jealous girl!

Iona Power.. there is not truth to that. And would you take that much pride in beating a team that doesn’t have to recruit to win? After this year, you will once again be St. Anthony’s bitch, so get it all out now!!!

After this year, you will once again be nothing more than a middle of the pack team who bows to St. Anthony’s, so get it all out now!!!

  48. IonaPower

    Section 9

Don’t be so sure about Iona Prep being a middle of the pack team after this year because you might want to take a look at their sophomore and junior talent. I also think most observers at the recent Rye 7-7 would say their Junior QB Tim Perley will be a good one when he steps in for Tyrae Woodson after this season.

Also a middle of the pack team in the CHSFL AAA would run through Section 9 with ease just like most section 1 teams run through section 9 in the State playoffs.

  49. IonaPower

    Section 9

Why don’t you tell me what players Iona Prep has recruited to win?? Did Iona Prep force any player to attend the school?? Would you not say that it is a players choice if he wants to attend Iona Prep or a Public School. THAT ARGUMENT ABOUT IONA PREP RECRUITING IS GETTING VERY OLD!!!!

  50. Nico

Lets end this discussion about Iona Prep recruiting right now. In the CHSFL giving incentives to attend their school is a form of recruiting. If it weren’t for those incentives a lot of those students, In my opinion, wouldn’t have the means to pay to go. With that being said, I think that it is in the best interest for those students to go to these schools. That is the CHSFL!!! They compete in their own league, so whats the issue. Its not like some of the other sports, where the CHSFL compete with public schools!!
To complete in the CHSFL AAA, you have to get the best players, look at St Anthonys. So lets just put all this recruiting to bed, They don’t effect section 1 the least bit, so whats the bother.
As for all the students who attend Iona Prep, Good for you! You are getting a quality education and a excellent athletic experience, Best of luck this year!!!

  51. section 9

Nico and Iona Power, no one is questioning whether a kid should go to Iona if he has the chance to. The bottom line is it is not a public school. So stop comparing it to Section 1 and 9 schools. You do recruit, you do give incentives and you are at times going after kids who will help your sports programs. To sit here and say a kid like Tyrae Woodson wasn’t offered a scholarship, sponsorship,or any aid to go to your school is a joke. Public schools do not have this ability.

You want to compare, compare to other top cathloic schools. We will see how you do against Bergen.

In terms of New Ro. I actually respect their program. They just haven’t been able to beat us as of late, so for now, I can gloat.

  52. IonaPower

    section 9

On a more serious note how does section 9 look for this year. I know with Dan Scalo back at QB Monroe is the favorite. Newburgh usually has some good athletes and will Kingston ever build their program back up because they used to be very solid.

  53. get out of here

    Section 9

This is a blog and it doesn’t require proper grammar so shove it. Ur a horrible representation of monroe cuz u come off as a pompous egotistical arrogant a-hole. U did pull off the win but as I sed before, u didn’t deserve the win. And u should at least acknowlege tht fact. I’m glad u respect our program, but after reading the stuff u write, I have lost some respect for ur program b/c u come off as a punk.

  54. section 9

Oh so since it is a blog, coming across as an illiterate bozo is acceptable? You make zero sense and look dumb. And the word is SAID not sed.

Iona Power. MW and NFA are the class of the league. The other teams are def. a work in progress. MW is the heavy favorite to win. Can’t see Scalo losing this year.

  55. IonaPower

    section 9

I remember back in 2004 Iona Prep went up on a Friday Night and played Newburgh during the first game of the season. They did have some very good speed at the skill positions.

The last two years Kingston and Chaminade had a home and home and from what I was told Kingston is a work in progress.

Very impressed with Scalo- Very tough to handle out of the spread offense.

  56. section 9

Scalo is one of those special kids. It has been so much fun watching him. Last year he was hurt and still put up those numbers. NFA is dangerous. MW can’t look past that game.

Where are the top kids on Iona getting looks from? Mack, Woodson, the big DL kid.

  57. IonaPower

    section 9

Mack and the DL Gadson might get some Big East offers.

Tyrae Woodson is looking at Division 1AA

  58. Ram Grad

Turning to Fordham Prep, anyone know where Charlie Argast is going to school in Sept?

  59. Crusader Watch

    Iona Power

I was at the 7 on 7… and I think 2009 will be a good year to be a gael… and 2010 should be good as well. After that I don’‘t know….

    What do you think?

  60. 10801

section 9, new rochelle has just as many championships as you guys in the past 10 years.

  61. IonaPower

    Crusader Watch

I did attend the Rye 7-7 and I was very impressed with all the teams in attendance. I have great respect for athletes who show the type of commitment that all the players displayed on that Saturday.

As far as Iona is concerned I was very impressed with the young talent on both sides of the ball. I am comfortable with how the program is set for the next 3 years. They have very good talent at all levels. Of course things can change very quickly so nothing is a guarantee. As you know the talent level in the CHSFL AAA is very strong so I am sure programs like Farrell, Chaminade, St. Joseph, Stepinac, Xaverian etc all are bringing in talented kids.

  62. get out of here

    section 9,

Since you are so critical of my bad grammar than I will type, using proper english. In all seriousness, from a non-bias point of view, would you consider your team better this year than last years team?

  63. ben dover

    section 9,
whats pathetic is that this is a section 1 blog. why r u even here?

  64. section 1

agreed. section 9, keep it up north

  65. chsfl thoughts

    ionapower:
dont even waste your time defending the chsfl on the recruiting issue. some of the public schools have fedor programs from the 3rd grade up and those coaches feel those kids belong to them and there is an obligation to attend the public school – if that isn’t recruiting then i don’t know what is – it is the biggest joke! mvernon bball’s 5th grade teams run the same system that the varsity high school teams run …hhmmmmm i wonder if that is an advantage???
and if that’s the case then the private schools shouldn’t have sports and everyone should go to public school.

  66. IonaPower

    chsfl thoughts

You are correct- The fact is that no one forces kids to attend Farrell, Iona , Stepinac etc…

I also know for a fact that some Public School coaches have called kids on Iona while they were attending the school to see if they would transfer. One coach even called a kid who at the time was playing on the JV to indicate that he would play on the varsity.

  67. section 9

Get outta… Yes I do. Last year Scalo played hurt. This year he will be healthy and is quicker and stronger. Very tough to defend.

To Section 1… In the end MW or whomever it maybe faces a section 1 opponent. So I am not crazy to be checking out this blog. It is very informative. Many of the bloggers here, go to other sites to gather info as well.

  68. chsfl thoughts

    iona power:
and that’s an entirely other issue. when a kid goes to the private rather then public that happens routinely especially in the city / bronx. it goes back to the entitlement that the respective public school district thinks they have over a kid – it’s crazy! but the poublics don’t want to hear that end, they just want to hear that iona or mount..etc took their kid – it’s actually pretty funny!

  69. IonaPower

    chsfl thoughts

Its all about what a family thinks is best for their child. I never hear anyone form Iona , Mount, Stepinac etc complain when a player transfers out after their FR or So year. What about the JV coach who devoted his time for that player too then watch that player take all the instruction learned to a public school?

  70. chsfl thoughts

    ionapower:
i agree completely but we will always lose that argument with the publics – it seems to go only one way. when a kid transfers out of an iona or stepinac the publics look at it like the kid is back to where they belong – it is the family’s decision – period!

  71. Crusader Watch

As a youth coach who sends kids both public and private schools I feel compelled to weigh in…

Its very simple NO SCHOOL IS ENTITLED TO A CERTAIN KID.

Let me first address the fact that Private schools recruit. YOU DAMN RIGHT THEY RECRUIT. But that’s because they have to or they will go out business. They recruit STUDENTS!!! That’s their business. They have to recruit students in order to remain open. And yes some of those students are athletes. But trust me the schools are going out looking for the best students as hard as coaches are looking for the best athletes. It’s the entire mentality of the Private school. That’s why colleges come visit schools. They need to recruit to keep their doors open. Same thing with private high schools.

Now public schools RECRUIT as well. In NYC they have to recruit because a kid has way more options than a kid in Westchester. Westchester coaches would not make it in NYC where they have to compete with 5 other schools in their area for players. How many kids have moved to attend a high school for their sports? How many youth programs run the high school system, and dress just like the High School. The publics are trying to instill pride in their H.S. program in 9 year old kids as soon as they play organized sports. I don’t see any White Plains Crusaders out there… or Iona Baby Gaels. or Fordham Prep Jr. Rams. So lets not act like the public schools are at a disadvantage out there.

Now on to my real point. Private school simply isn’t for everyone. Some students can handle a private school education and some kids cant. Then out of the students that can some parents can afford it and some cant. The private schools deal with a relatively small pool of kids. Every kid can’t get in, every kid wont last, and every kid cant afford the school. Parents and students need to find the best fit for them and for some yes its private school. So like it or not the reason why the private school league is better OVERALL is because its easier to teach above average football when you have above average students!

    What do you think?

  72. IonaPower

    Crusader Watch

I have already seen a few Public School backers already proclaim that Iona and Stepinac are stealing players. The facts are that Iona and Stepinac provide a great overall environment.

  73. Ball Boy

you guys should stop talkin bout iona like thier in section 1. lets talk about real stuff like who you think kevin is gunna pick for super 11? what team is going to be the strongest in classm AA,A,B,C/D?

  74. section 1 fan

    Super 11

    1 Tyrae Woodson QB

    2 Jeff Mac RB

    3 Ryan Schilling QB

    4 Louis DiRienzo LB

    5 Matt Deianna RB

    6 Breraton OL

    7 Sal Sulla RB

    8 Dakota Dagree Dl
