Big Apple Shootout

May
26

Don’t be fooled by the title of this post. It’s actually about football.

White Plains High School will host 7-on-7 Passing Competition on June 13 at 1 p.m. and will feature some of the area’s top teams. Carmel, Iona Prep, White Plains, North Rockland, Stepinac, Spring Valley, Croton-Harmon, Pleasantville Irvington, Rye Neck, Clarkstown North, Haldane, and Brunswick are among the teams that have already committed.

It’s a bracket tournament with each team guaranteed three games.

Football in mid-June has a nice ring to it. I’ll actually be on vacation that week but full intend to stop by and watch for a while.

    Kevin,

I’m not sure but I think Rye also has their 7 on 7 passing scrimmage the same day at 1pm. Iona has participated in this passing scrimage the past few years. Does this mean the are not going to Rye. Also I’m hearing that Inoa is not attendng New Rochelle’s Champion Camp can you look into this.!

  2. Gael

It’s true Iona will not be attending Champion Camp. Also Rye does have it’s 7 on 7 scheduled for the same day, same time i believe. Teams are Rye, Hastings, Eastchester, Ketchum, dobbs ferry, New rochelle,

  3. Football Fan

    Gael,

Any reason why Iona isn’t attending Champion Camp, rumor
has it that the CHSFL has come down with strict rules governing pre season participation is this true and will they still host New Rochelle and Rye in the spring?

  4. football fan fyi

The CHSFL principals has ruled that all Thud camps [ contact with equipment] are not allowed. Principals were concerned about lawsuits & teams getting an unfair advantage who attended these camps. No team may participate in any camp that more than 7 members of any one school is on field at same time. Any team in the 20 team league that is caught will be eliminated from playoffs in there league. Individual camps are OK. 7 on 7 camps are OK. League allows teams to have a 5 day mini camp with no equipment in spring .

I would believe all area CHSFL schools will not take a chance & participate in any Thud camps with the penalty of no playoffs hanging over there heads.

  5. Football Fan

Has the CHSFL come out with this ruling, this year or has it been on the books. It seems to be that with IONA’S success the CHSFL is trying to limit the amount of practice time they could have. Shame on everyone else for NOT being
as dominate as IONA, so if you can’t beat them on the field by all means try something as ridiculous as this rule to slow them down. What a joke this is!

  6. SPY

Mahoapc fans usually have alot of players participate in the section 1 recruiting combines. Hope to see Bereton there, he could be your top linemen in the state. Herd he’s playing center this year not tackle as requested by Penn State coaching staff which is giving him a hard look!

  7. Football fan FYI

Out of season practices have always been in rule book. They have never been allowed in CHSFL.CHSFL was probably not aware of these camps until they were reported in blogs live everyday last summer. Blow for blow what was happening. These camps have also have got a little out of control with teams playing like it is the super bowl. Iona having a great year probably shined a light on situation.
The other point is lawsuits. If a kid gets injured , the lawyers sue everyone now a days. coach, school, league, the site of camp. You name it you get sued. If a kid is at a school sanctioned event with school equipment then school & league becomes also involved. If one kid sued that would be end of all these camps as we know them. Even the waiver they sign are use less.
The penalty [ no playoffs]has just been added this year by principals to control there football programs & it was voted in at request of 1 Westchester principal[ not Step , Fordham or Mount]

I agree that these camps are a good thing for kids & it is to bad they cannot find a way to continue them. but not for this summer at least in the CHSFL unless they want to take a chance getting caught.

  8. Croton Sport Fan

Let go Croton Tigers !! Pay attention and keep working out. People will be waiting for you this year.

  9. Sleepy Fan

Sleepy Hollow has also committed to play in the shoot-out this year. There is a lot of great teams going, but Sleepy is going to make some noise!!!

  10. Liars are Cowards

Iona is hosting Rye, Dobbs Ferry and New Rochelle at their camp at the end of June. As far as I know they’ll be at Champion Camp, just in a limited role.

  11. I Lost Thirty Pounds in Thirty Days

    Great Post, Thanks.

  12. go eagles

What are the chances that Saunders runs into the same issue as last year and can’t field a team for opening day? I hope it doesn’t happen, so can anything be done now to make it easier for the coaches and kids to run full practices before school starts?

  13. Bring on Football

I noticed that the Section 1 Football Combines this Saturday conflict with the first round of the baseball sectionals. The hosts of the combine ould have been planned better….

  14. Section 1 Player

    Coach Fagan,

Can you gives us players some type of time frame on reporting to the combine on saturday what time, and if we already registered what do we need to do from this point, we have had NO communication from you at all. Please advise
    thank you.

  15. Football Fan

    Go eagles,

Stop worrying about saunders you should be looking towards Harrison and Rye. Everyone pratices during the off season
with their coaches. Saunders will be fine they had strong numbers on their jv team.

  16. go eagles

    FF,

One game at a time bro. Saunders is one.

  17. Bro

    go eagles,

how are the eagles going to replace it’s entire offense
from last year, look out it could be a long season! one game at a time LOL

  18. go eagles

    Bro,

You will have to come to the games and watch and learn.

I think guys like you have been saying the Eagles will have a hard time in A for two years now. 17-3 speaks for itself. Beat Harrison twice, so, what’s your point?

  19. IonaPower

Iona will not be at the Champions Camp but will have a Preseason Game at Greenwich on Labor Day weekend. Iona Prep-Greenwich will be played under normal game conditions like the previous 3 years. This will be a good test for Iona as they open at Giants Stadium against a very strong Bergen Catholic program.

  20. Keith Fagan

    Bring on Football,

There are always going to be conflicts with any date you choose in the Spring. The overwhelming majority of baseball players that also play football are finished with their seasons because their teams didn’t make the sectional playoffs. If your going to knock me, knock me for scheduling the Player Evaluation Day the same day as the last SAT’s of the Spring like I did last year. Now that could have been planned better, but I learned from my mistake…

    Section 1 Player,

Please check your email. An email was sent out yesterday confirming the 83 players who have pre-registered. If you did not receive an email, it’s either because I couldn’t read your handwriting on the registration form, it was a bad email address, or I haven’t received your registration form yet. When did you send it in? Email me with your name and I’ll check to see if I’ve received your registration form. All pre-registered players should arrive about 8:40 – 8:50 am.

  21. KINGHTSNUMBA1

the problem with iona doing the champion camp, came directly from stepinac and mount complaining at the league meeting that they are scrimmaging new rochelle a power house and rye a power house and that was giving them a clear advantage. and also the league didn’t like the way lil old iona ran threw the best football league in new york. alot of people didn’t like the way iona beat up on the teamz when it was all said and done. and thats a fact!!!!!!!!!! iona keep stomping those haters. haters step your game up!!! so now every1 knows the real fact…......

  22. IonaPower

    KINGHTSNUMBA1

I know for a fact that the coaches at Mount despise Iona. It all goes back to the fact that some of the kids on Iona are from Mount St. Michael Junior High School. Mario Valentini the coach at Mount has a problem when a student athlete picks Iona.

Stepinac should not have to worry about Iona as they were relegated this year to the CHSFL AA from their one year stint playing with the big boys in the CHSFL AAA. Stepinac might also be mad that Iona picked Bergen Catholic as their non league game.

  23. Bring on Football

    Keith Fagan,

I disagree, it seems like most football players playing baseball are playing Saturday. If the combine date was one week later, I agree that all teams but the section winner would be eliminated. Here are the teams playing Saturday:

    SATURDAY
    Class AA opening round:
    Ossining-New Rochelle winner at No. 1 Mamaroneck, 11 a.m.
No. 15 White Plains at No. 2 Arlington, 1 p.m.
    No. 14 John Jay-East Fishkill at No. 3 Ketcham, 11 a.m.
No. 13 Scarsdale at No. 4 Fox Lane, 1 p.m.
No. 12 Yorktown at No. 5 Saunders, at Fleming Field, 1 p.m.
No. 11 Clarkstown South at No. 6 North Rockland, 1 p.m.
No. 10 Horace Greeley at No. 7 Carmel, 1 p.m.
No. 9 Suffern at No. 8 John Jay, 1 p.m.
    Class A opening round:
No. 14 Tappan Zee at No. 3 Hen Hud, 1 p.m.
    No. 13 Panas at No. 4 Ardsley, 11 a.m.
    No. 12 Harrison at No. 5 Brewster, 11 a.m.
    No. 11 Rye at No. 6 Beacon, 2 p.m.
No. 10 Byram Hills at No. 7 Eastchester, 1 p.m.
No. 9 Pelham at No. 8 Pearl River, 1 p.m.
    Class B opening round:
    No. 11 Bronxville at No. 6 Briarcliff, 4 p.m.
    No. 10 Croton-Harmon at No. 7 Albertus Magnus, 1 p.m.
    No. 9 Pawling at No. 8 Pleasantville, 11 a.m.
    Class C quarterfinals:
No. 6 Valhalla at No. 3 North Salem, 1 p.m.
    No. 5 Tuckahoe at No. 4 Haldane, 12 p.m.

  24. CHSFL

I know for a fact that Stepinac had nothing to do with camps coming to an end as they attend an annual camp and after talking to their coaching staff it is obvious that they are disappointed that they are limited to 7 on 7’s without contact all summer. The CHSFL is a Long Island run league and based on my knowledge there are no thud-camps in Long Island and I’m sure they arent happy about the emergence of Westchester football and their opinion must be that these camps are helping teams like Iona and Stepinac emerge.
And I am sure the fact that 2/3’s of Iona’s skill players coming from Mount Vernon hasn’t helped Mario and vic’s relationship, so I wouldnt be surprised if Mount complained as they do nothing until August 17th. With that said, I know for a fact that Mount goes away every year during preseason and scrimmages multiple teams. I wonder if the CHSFL is going to put an end to that as well???????????????????????????

  25. Keith Fagan

    Bring on Football,

There are not that many football players that are playing baseball on Saturday that cannot make the combine portion of the event. So far I have had two parents contact me about the conflict (out of 83), and I have resolved the conflict very easily. And, if I held the Player Evaluation Day next weekend, that’s the last SAT testing date of the Spring, and I believe I already addressed that issue. If your so concerned about when I schedule this event, how about being part of the solution instead of complaining and come up with a date next year when there are no conflicts. Good luck coming up with a Saturday in the Spring with no other events taking place. Or are you just one of those who people who just like to complain about life?

  26. Football21

Speaking of football in June. The Football Classic is being played June 7th @ Rutgers. NJ allstars vs Northeast allstars
The game is on TV channel 9 @ 3PM. Rob Lombardo representing Section 1.

  27. Hoops fan

    IonaPower,
I wouldn’t go criticizing Stepinac’s football team or coaches based on hypotheticals. Coach O’Donnell doesn’t strike me as the complaining type. FYI, 8 of Stepinac’s seniors has committed to play football in college next year.
    1. Brian Douglas – Marist [ Div 1 AA]
    2. Ryan Hunt – Stonehill College [ Mass] [div2]
    3. Brian Boulhousa- CW Post [ div 2]
    4. Conor ODonnell- St Lawrence Univ [ Div 3]
    5. Blake Rzemieniewski- Springfield College [ Div 3]
    6. Nykeem Mills- Nichols Colege [ Div 3]
    7. William McCaffrey- Albany State[ Div 1 AA]
    8. Joe Guerra- SUNY Maritime [ Div 3]

A ninth (Peter Neubauer) hasn’t decided yet. This is not including the QB Joe Collins who decided on a golf scholarship to Coastal Carolina, but could’ve played football on some level in college. And Maurice Easterling who is going to Trinity Pawling for his last year due to him transferring into Stepinac. I’ve heard Easterling is at least a IAA level player, possibly higher. Not bad, huh? In this day and age when getting into and paying for college is harder than ever, having 9, 10 or 11 seniors have the opportunity to play college football is impressive.

Let’s let Iona’s players and coaches prove it on the field for a couple more years before you go anointing them. We have short memories to forget that St Anthony’s is just coming off a string of 7 or 8 championships in a row until injuries to their star RB and QB derailed them last year.

I’m looking forward to Stepinac/Iona again in 2010!

  28. CHSFL Hoops fan

Lets not get carried away here. Football coaches for the longest time have been trying to keep up with the 24/7 AAU basketball, fall baseball, Hockey playing all year round. These Thud camps have provided a great enviroment for coaches to keep there kids heads into football during the spring or summer months. It is to bad that the CHSFL doesn’t see the great work thses coaches who put the time in do for there kids & schools. I guess some programs have taken a bit to far going to 3 & 4 thud camps. Almost like summer sessions in June & July. From what I understand Iona’s Principal was the one who asked for the harsh penalty of the rule [ no playoffs if caught going to thud camp].
It is to bad that Iona & Stepinac will not play this year . I am sure the 3000 alumni & students & fans who attend that game each year will have to wait till 2010. Iona has a great opportunity to play a Jersy power house in Giants Stadium. You cannot knock them for going out & playing the best teams [ with a great team returning].
I also would not blame anyone school or coaches for the rule being put in place. The no official practice rule has been in the NY State rule book for as long as anyone could remember. Years ago football could not start till school opened & they played only 7 or 8 games schedules with no playoffs. That did not stop great players from coming from this area. I remember back in the 80’s the yonkers schools would not let players use equipment from schools during summer . Those coaches borrowed equipment so kids could go to camp.
The CHSFL is a great league. it has 20 differen’t football programs from LI to SI, NYC & westchester. Everyone has different situations, school sizes & problems. Somehow the league still has a very good product. The rules that the coaches must abide by are put in place to help make sure that all the schools are on a level playing field & all play by the same rules. The rules also are in place to help protect the coaches & schools from lawsuits & things of such. Football coaches have made this sport a 12 month a year job. It was not always that way. We should thank them for doing a great job & caring for our young men.

  29. IonaPower

    Hoops Fan

First of all you should read my post before you start barking at me. I said that Stepinac does not have to worry about Iona because they were relegated to the CHSFL AA which is a fact. I also said that the coaches at Stepinac may be annoyed that Iona dropped them off their non league schedule. I was not critical of Stepinac. I find it odd that you slipped in that little comment about Iona beating ST. Anthony because of their injuries which is a joke because they beat them twice last year and how do you explain Jeffrey Mack scoring 7 touchdowns on their defense in the championship game.

  30. Old School

IonaPower, why would Stepinac complain if they go to a similar camp and are one of the most active offseason programs around? Sounds like you were just trying to take a dig at them. As for Hoops Fan, Iona is the best team in the County and will probably be again this year.

Just no need to dig at a quality program like Stepinac that will be impacted just as much as Iona by the rule change.

  31. NR

is mack getting any d1 interest ?

  32. IonaPower

    Old School

I think Stepinac has a very good program and has improved steadily over the last 2-3 years. They are probably a top 5 program in the Lower Hudson region. They have been very aggressive in getting in front of kids playing for good youth programs like the Eastchester Blue Devils. I also think they are making a mistake playing in the CHSFL AA after showing themselves to be very competitive in the CHSFL AAA.

As far as this whole Camp business I know that Iona did not make any issues about attending these camps so I do not know where this has all come down from. It is in Iona and Stepinacs best interest to attend these camps because they are two of the smaller schools in the CHSFL. Programs like Farrell, St. Anthony, Chaminade and St. Francis are much bigger schools from an enrollment standpoint.

While Iona – Stepinac is an intense rivalry I am smart enough to respect their program.

  33. reginald dunlop

With that said, I know for a fact that Mount goes away every year during preseason and scrimmages multiple teams. I wonder if the CHSFL is going to put an end to that as well???????????????????????????

I would love to know where you get those facts???????? Come on there CHSFL enlighten us all….who do they scrimmage at their preseason camp??? let’s punish the offenders or are you full of hot air….all accusations with no evidence to back it up???? just another windbag aren’t you??? what’s the matter, mom and dad won’t listen to you???? does your dog hate you??? why all the negativity?? are you one of the “so-called” haters????

  34. mo dijon

    amen to that

  35. R Maccarnaghy

I hear Eastchester HS is able to keep alot of its homegrown talent now because Ass.Coach Steve Boyer is handing out free HOT DOGS at the Blue Devils games

  36. Bercarmo

Mount goes to away to a closed summer camp that rents there facilities out to football teams the last week of summer. Garden City and Tottenville are also at the camp but Mount does not scrimmage either school. Each school practices in their own section of the camp and there is no interaction at all. Mario Valentini is as good a person as you will ever come across and has always played by the rules of the CHSFL.

First… I would like to say that you are a GREAT speller!
Second…If I recall Iona just squeeked bye Farrell 10-0 and almost lost to the Mount in the first round of the playoffs…I will say that Iona had a tremendous season and congratulations to them.
Third…I am sure you were at all the CHSFL league meetings and listened to Stepinac and Mount complain…you don’t know much about anything…so before you accuse people and teams of things you should get your facts straight…
and I think what you were trying to spell is…

Football Fan…Iona had 1, I repeat, 1 fantastic season. If the CHSFL was going to make a rule to slow a team down, don’t you think they would have made up some rule to slow down St. Anthony’s, the winner of 7 straight CHSFL Championships and 60 something league wins in a row??

When Iona wins 6 more championships then I’ll agree with you

Thanks for the insight. I heard somthing similar but it didn’t involve coaches. Either way it’s “stretching” the rules, not really breaking them, since there wasn’t a rule that prohibited that until now.

Anyway, who is kinghtsnumba1? That guy sounds like a moron. His nickname doesn’t even make sense. Don’t know why some Iona fans have to be sore winners. They won. Congrats. Enjoy it like the rest of their fans.

I’m wondering if that guy plays for Iona? I think he does.

Any Mount fans out there??? I heard a rumor that their DT Reed is going to Princeton. That true? Also heard he turned down Harvard. Any word of this true? If so,that’s incredible cause they weren’t very good this year.

KINGHTSNUMBA1, is probably a kid on Iona prep’s roster that is originally from mount vernon and especially with that spelling I wouldn’t be surprise if you were from mount vernon. Get off this blog and go study a dictionary please.

Reid the Lineman from Mount is going to Princeton. He alos was good enough to play at some mid major division 1 schools. He was one of the top 3 linemen in the league. Iona had a lot of problems blocking him during the playoffs.

    Political Moochismo

You are certainly correct that Iona did not un through everyone in the league- You can add Holy Cross as another team taht had Iona on the ropes- Iona won 38-35. No one will ever run through the CHSFL AAA. Even St. Anthony over the years has always had some tough games with Mount, Iona, St. Joseph by the Sea and Chaminade.

  49. LI CHSFL

To many people on this blog think they are so informed & know every thing. In NY State Federation rule book it states that no team can have organized practices out of season that are mandatory. OK we all know that these camps were mandatory. Public schools are looking the other way when it comes to these camps. CHSFL has said that 7 on 7 camps & individual camps are OK. Team camps are not allowed with more than 7 players from one team on field at same time.
IN CHSFL By laws it clearly states that teams are allowed a one week non contact mini camp doing only individual drills . It also says no practices may be run outside the dates given by league. Aug 24th is this years starting date. Most schools going to these camps, got around rule for years. Rule has not been changed , just the penalty has changed[ no playoffs if caught]. By the way- the new penalty was put in place after the Iona principal asked league to give rule some teeth so it could be enforced. Please stop throwing accusations around blog as to who & why this penalty change came to light. Even in the NCAAA they have rules that must be followed. Teams all the time try to bend rules to help them WIN ! Ask John Calipari & Bobby Bowden . Rules have been put in place many years ago to keep Coaches from doing whatever they want to win. People who break the rules end up getting caught & embarrass there schools & get fired. Ask Bobby Bowden was the academic scandal worth the embarrassment he will be bringing to school. He probably doesn’t care because winning at all cost is what is more important to most of these guys.

Just to confirm what has been said. The rules have been in the bylaws for many years [ not because one team won] They are being enforced because a few teams were getting around the rules with creative thinking. I am sure the scrimmaging during summer session before date will be discussed also. St Anthony’s was put on probation years ago for scrimmaging at there summer sleep away camp before NY State date. You must have a certain number of practice by law before you can scrimmage. They took a chance & got caught. Penalty back then was they were not allowed to play a bye week game [1stgame of season for two years]. To many coaches today think they are above the rules & the only thing that matters is winning. I guess the only thing that matters on this Blog is winning also!

    Ionapower,

I have been trying to tell you that Iona should scrimmage bosco rather than greenwich. If you are saying that it will be a regular game vs greenwich than i predict that Iona will maul greenwich and that will be no way to prepare for BC. I also hope that they smack BC but i would rather have seen the two best teams in the area on the field together in a controlled scrimmage or some type of regular game/scrimmage. Also, with Iona’s success there will be people coming from all over the place telling you how they hope they lose and that they recruit or cheat or something or another. Get used to it if you keep winning

IONA HAD 1 GREAT SEASON, PRIOR TO THAT I BELIEVE THEY WERE LIKE A 500 TYPE TEAM IN THE CHSFL AAA WHICH IS STILL GOOD CONSIDERING THEIR ENROLLMENT VS. THE OTHER SCHOOLS IN THAT LEAGUE. LETS NOT GET CRAZY THINKING THEY ARE A POWERHOUSE.
I KNOW IONA WILL BE VERY GOOD NEXT YEAR BUT THEY ARE NO MATCH FOR BOSCO AND WILL PROBABLY HAVE A VERY TOUGH TIME WITH BERGAN CATHOLIC. PEOPLE SEEM TO FORGET THAT
ST. ANTHONY’S HAD THERE STARTING QB AND R.B OUT IN THAT GAME – I MEAN, DOESN’T THAT MEAN ANYTHING? I DON’T WANT TO TAKE ANYTHING AWAY FROM IONA, BUT IF TYRAE AND MACK DIDN’T PLAY IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, IONA WOULD HAVE LOST AND ALL YOU WOULD HAVE HEARD WAS THAT THEIR 2 BEST PLAYERS DIDN’T PLAY!

    L.I.

I don’t think it would have mattered. St. A’s defense had no clue how to slow down that offense. Iona made them look silly. They should have watched the Farrell or Mount game to see how to slow them down a bit. Farrell gave up 10 and
Mount gave up 21. Didn’t see the Farrell game but saw the Mount game. They shut Mack down. Think he had like 50 yds rushing or something like that. Iona had a couple of big pass plays. Game could have gone either way.

The Bergen Iona game should be interesting. Hope Iona represents the CHSFL well.

Don Bosco is a National top 20 program so I think Iona Prep would face a difficult challenge. Also Don Bosco is now at the level of playing St. Xavier, DeLasalle and Hoover with their non league schedule. Facing Bergen Catholic is stiil a great matchup and is the type of team that Iona better matches up against.

    L.I.

I certainly wil not say that Iona Prep is a powerhouse but over the last 4 year they have been in the Championship game 2 times and the Semifinals 2 times so I would say they have done very well in one of the more difficult league on the east coast. Also most teams with the exception of St. Anthony will have 7-3, 6-4 and 5-5 records because of the balance in the league. Every game as you know is a war with the Iona-Farrell game a perfect example. I am sure that if Farrell played in many different league in the area that they would have a winning record.

As far as the Iona – St. Anthony matchup you can’t dismiss the fact that Iona scored over 40 points in each game. Also the QB did play in the first game. I know that the RB was a huge loss and with St. Anthony having the very good season that they diod shows how much depth they have in that program. Of course Iona would not overcome those types of injuries because they are a much smaller school. This year I believe you will see a CHSFL AAA championship game that will have both teams with more than 2 losses facing each other because of the balance of the league.

    F B FOR LIFE,

I WOULD SAY I AM THE #1 MOUNT FAN OUT HERE.MSM1952.IN 1951 i was 1st team football and third team in basketball.back in those days howie smith had 3 weeks spring practices with pads from dAY 1.WE STARTED fall practices 3 weeks before school,2 a day at the mount.i think we were the only one to do this.the mount was the top football program at that time but that was a million years ago.the mount does not bend rules.i take exception to anybody knocking the mount.after 70 years we are still going strong and sending men into the world.i thank god my parents found 15$ a month to pay my tuition.lets be happy alot of our players go to college and may the best teams win next year and they all follow the rules.

    Guess its my turn…

Iona Prep deserves alot of credit for what they did last year… Are they a powerhouse NO not yet… Do I think they will be really good again this year…. YES…

HERE IS THE BIG QUESTION… What about 2010?????? will they be ranked #1 again… will they be in contention or back to .500 football?

Iona Power what are your thoughts?

  58. IonaPower

The CHSFL AAA is so balanced that most teams are ging to have over 2 losses because every game is rough. The previous two years before Iona won the championship they were 5-5 and 6-5 but played well at the end and made it to the CHSFL AAA semifinals only to loss close games to St. Anthony. This upcoming season Stepinac will probably go 9-2 or 10-1 in the CHSFL AA. If they were playing in the CHSFL AAA with a low powere point seed (Like Fordham) they would most likely be around 5-5. The last 4 seeds in the 12 team league have a somewhat easier scheduel then lets say St. Anthony or Ioan Prep.

Iona Prep should have a very good team in 2010 and 2011 based off of their current Sophomore and Freshman classes. Their championship team had 6 sophomores who played a major part on the team with the exception of their back up sophomore QB. Keep an eye on Michael Longo, Sidney Weston and Travon Malone as they go from their sophomore year to their Junior year. All 3 are Journal News Super 11 caliber. Iona had a very good freshmen team this year with 2 kids moved up immediately to the JV.

    gentlemen,

Iona is in a great position if the admin decides that it wants to take it to the next level in football. They have a great location, solid facilities, a strong alumni base and the opportuntiy to attract players from throughout the region. All it takes is 5 from mt vernon, 4 from new ro, 3 from white plains, several players sprinkled in from harrison, rye, pchester and then a few players who train it in from the bronx and manhattan plus one or two connecticut guys and you have yourself one hell of a team. The way i see it iona could be strong for the next 10 years, unless the admin does something to prevent the situation from occurring. When it comes to scheduling they could select form a group of teams along the east coast such as BC, St Joes, Bosco, St joes philly, Cardinal Ohara philly, Dematha and Good Counsel MD, plus i forgat st petes nj. Along with their league schedule they could be in position to move up to the next level of competition and if they were succesful at the next level, then many of the stronger players from the area would want to be part of iona football and then who knows? This will be a big season for iona.

    ionapower,

We agree, and st anthonys has been ranked in the top 25 usa today during that run. If Iona has a several year run like that then they will be mentioned in the top 25. They are not that far away from that opportunity which will begin in around 3 months. If iona wins the league again and has 1 or no losses they will definitely be top 10 east and maybe top 25 nationally. Then the year after they would need another step up game against a known opponent and that is how the cycle works. enjoy the run…

Why would you think eastchester has allot to replace. They are returning 16 out of 22 starters. They loose three starters offensively. Thier linebackers, and all their secondary return. I think Harrison (Especially since we beat them two years in a row) better worry about us. Rye is a quality team, and it will be a good matchup. But to think that eastchester is down big mistake. Eastchester also returns 5 two year starters, that encompass 10 0f the starting 22 spots. Can’t wait to get it on, but like go eagels said…....one at a time…...saunders first…..

Whats your thoughts on the BC game? Who wins?

I also agree that Stepinac should be very good in AA this year. I think that the AA ranking is going to help attract more players to the program as Stepinac will be attempting to make the AA championship for the 3rd year in a row! I think Stepinac is on the verge of becoming a very good AAA program in the next few years… Have you heard anything about their incoming class?

    What do you think?

  80. foxes

    Eagle Power,

To say your offense will be good if not better is stretching it a bit. You lost your entire back field from last year as well as your qb. Your team will resemble the Baltimore Ravens, strong defense, ground control offense. Don’t look past anyone remenber fox lane the past two years. Watch out for Poughkeepsie they could be tough as well, i know you’ll tell me it’s not a league game remember you need to get into the sectionals to compete at the next level, getting into sectional 2 years ago doesn’t give your program the respect that you think it should have. Remember finish what you start!

And by the way Mack was not going to Mount after 8th grade no matter what! Just like several other Mount kids have said.. Mount would get more kids if they closed the JHS…. kids attend the JHS with the intention on continuing to the HS… they don’t like their experience and decide they will not do 4 more years there!!!! Think about that…. Mount had 3 years to recruit these guys and make sure they stayed and what happened? They all left… go to the JHS and ask how many of the 8th graders on the sports teams are staying? I bet less than 50% and they all arent going to IONA!! Whats happening at Mount is Mounts fault noone elses…

  82. IonaPower

    Crusader Watch

Iona Prep and Stepinac have drastically improved their programs over the last few years which is a credit to both coaching staffs. I thought last year with Stepinac beating Farrell was a landmark win. Ten years ago Stepinac would have been spanked by a program like Farrell. Iona Prep winning the CHSFL AAA which is arguably the most difficult league in all of New York is something that changes your program andallows you to play big time programs like Bergen Catholic.

Iona – Bergen Catholic will be a tough game. Bergen Catholic is on the same level as St. Anthony. They have a big Junior Quarterback who has received an offer already from Rutgers and the they have a big RB/LB that has Big 10 offers. Bergen Catholic will probably be a big physical team that will give Iona Prep all they can handle.

As far as incoming classes it is pure speculation because of admissions etc. I do know that Iona Prep has lost a couple of kids becuase admissions would not let them in the school. Apparantly one kid almost fell asleep while on an interview with the admissions officer whic obviously eliminated him. I do know that Iona has 1-2 transfers coming in that will be sophomores which further sugmenst their very good freshman class. Stepinac has done a good job getting some eastchester blue devil kids from Yonkers. I also have heard good things about their sophomore QB. The only problem that I have with Stepinac is them playing in the CHSFL AA. They will run through that league easily becuase the CHSFL AAA now has 12 teams. Two years ago the CHSFL AA had more competition because the CHSFL AAA was an 8 team league.

  84. Eagle power

    foxes,

No doubt you have our number and are a very tough team. I give you guys all the credit in the world. But our offense will be more diverse with a qb who is tall enough and has a cannon for an arm. He has been on varsity two years now, and is only a junior next year. He started against somers last year, and if not for untimely fumbles and a bad coaching decision at the end of the half, he played rather well. You certainly can’t load the box like you did the past two years. And by the way, our backfield returns one tailback. Remember with the box loaded we did rush for 346 yards against you. YES YOU WON, but now that we are a passing threat, it will be that much harder 4 you to defend us. Good luck next season.

  85. Eagle power

ps. a 17-3 record, two bowl victories, two wins vs harrison (which you couldn’t do) and a victory against somers and Nyack. Have given us plenty of respect. If you didn’t have two weeks to prepare for us, change all your routs, and come up with a completely different attack, things would have been much different.

  86. Eagle power

Here we go again, the Eagles living off past glory. How many more times do we have to hear about the 17-3 record, and the 2 victories against harrison. Tell your coach to win the a big game in the playoffs, then start talking. Also do you think your coach is going to change from his navy style attack to a run and shoot, spread offense, think again.

    iona power,

the first thing you will notice about BC is their size. Look at some of these guys when they warm-up, they are big and strong. Whoever controls the line of scrimmage should win that game. I am rooting for iona. I also like the fact that iona has the break away player(mack). I do not know if bc has a back like that this year. I also remember when ther QB went down in that finals against Bosco last year, the sub was a smaller, wiry type kid that was not too impressive. I do not know anything about a junior qb who was offered by RU.

  91. IonaPower

    DBP 81

I think Iona Prep will have the speed advantage but I do worry about Iona have enough DL depth to stop the Bergen Catholic running game. Bergen Catholic will try to control the clock to keep the speed of Mack and Woodson on the sideline.

Tanner McEvoy is the Bergen Catholic QB who is will be a Junior who switched from WR and has been offered by Rutgers. Doug Rigg seems to be their top prospect who could give Iona trouble.

    IonaPower,
Interesting points. I agree with your assessments on the improvements in both Stepinac and Iona’s football programs over the last couple years and that both coaching staffs deserve a lot of credit. I initially was disappointed to hear Stepinac was playing a AA schedule this year, but when I thought about how much they lost to graduation this year (those 8, 9 or 10 kids going on to play college football next year) it makes sense to me. CHSFL AAA football is largely dominated by line play. If a team doesn’t have enough size, strength and depth on the lines I don’t think they can compete in the AAA. The sophomore QB you mention at Stepinac will be in his first year starting and the outstanding freshman running back from last year will only be a sophomore. Maybe a year playing a AA schedule will poise some of these excellent skill position players for a big year in 2010.

It will be exciting to see what Iona does this year. I would be surprised if they lost more than one game and I think they have a chance to repeat their undefeated season from last year.

By your reaction it is safe to say, this rumor is true. Thanks for confirming it kid. :)

  107. Crusader Fan

I stopped by Stepinac’s mini-camp yesterday and for a team that moved down to the AA and lost a ton of seniors they looked pretty good/advanced for this time of year. The young QB and a couple receivers looked good, the line looked bigger then in years past, and the Gilligan-Evans kid is a man-child. He is definitely going to be a player to watch this year.

  108. COACH DARLOS

    Hello Room

Those kids were never going to Mount, hated the middle school experiance like somebody else said. I tried to talk to the coach at Mount back in those days. With no success. Any of the Mount Vernon kids at Iona where never going to Mount Vernon High School either. and not because of the football program there. But because of other issues. But I will continue to pay my high property tax. There is plenty of talent out there. Coaches just have to coach. I have a team this year with 25 kids age 13-15 who never played. We played the #2 Midget team in the national last week. Get beat up . But my kids never quit, talk about some tough kids. Then last week we pound a team from Brooklyn. This week we go to Harlem to play the Harlem Jets. I say all this to say some coaches said they would nt want to coach these kids that never played. These kids dont even watch football on tv,on my team. But it is fun. Look for my team in the Fall. I have alot of coaches at our games and practices checking the talent out.

  109. Hoops fan

    Crusader fan,
Thanks for the update. I’m interested to see Tyrell Goodman play this year as presumably the starting QB. Apparently, he is an incredible athlete with a rocket for an arm. The fact that Gilligan-Evans played varsity as a freshman says enough, but by the end of the year he really looked like the next in line of outstanding running backs at Stepinac. I’m interested to see how the team stacks up this year.

    IonaPower,
How is Iona looking so far in the pre-season workouts?

  110. IonaPower

    Hoops fan

Very early in the process but team needs to find another receiving option now that Chris Alfano graduated which is a big loss. I know the coaches are optimistic about some of the linemen. Iona does have some very good young talent that will be in the sophomore and Junior class. Of course playing in the CHSFL AAA will be rough with the likes of St. Anthony, St. Joseph and Holy Trinity all road games.

I do agree that Goodman and Evans will be cornerstones for Stepinac over the next 2 years. Stepinac will be undefeated before the CHSFL AA playoffs. It will then be interesting to see how they do against the 4 teams from the CHSFL AAA that move down for the CHSFL AA playoffs. Last year Holy Trinity won the cHSFL AA after playing a AAA schedule.

    Harrison football,

You left out the fact that we controlled the ball for the last 8 mins of the game and you couldn’t stop us when it counted. We even went for it on fourth and two from our own thirty (big moment) and you still couldn’t stop us. Why?? We are stronger and have more will. That’s how you win close games. It comes down to will and strength. And yes we will be just as deadly this year. Look at the results from the combine!!!

  117. Eagle power

    BTW, Harrison Football

You didn’t win the leauge last year, it was a three way tie. Although tie breakers determine the playoffs, it doens’t determine leauge champions. You sound like a bitter individual who does not have any facts. According to you it was wrong that Tyrae Woodson won the QB position and led Iona Prep to its finest season in memory. Being ranked by ESPN and MSG helped the school overall. No one told Anthony Gentile to leave Iona Prep. In fact he would have seen playing time at other positions before he decided to leave the program. If I am not mistaken all these players are doing well in the classroom. If Iona was winning at all costs then how come they did not admit a few of the stud football players that were rejected by admissions. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!!!

  119. jim

Harrison Football and Eagle Power ….Do you guys really have to start all this crap five months before you play? I saw the last two Eastchester-Harrison games as a neutral observer. The teams were evenly matched in both games, but truth be told, neither team in either year was all that great. The games were exciting, but the teams, although decent, were not great. Eastchester is obviously not used to beating teams like Harrison. When you get accustomed to winning on a more regular basis perhaps you will cut back on the bragadaccio a little bit. Before 2007 didn’t Harrison beat you about 30 in a row? And Harrison Football PLEASE don’t start in about how great Harrison does at combines and 7 on 7’s. Based on what was written on this blog before the last two years (especially last year)Harrison was unbeatable in Class A, vs Rye, and even against Iona Prep and New Rochelle. The bar is set much higher at Harrison than at Eastchester. A two or three loss season at Harrison is a disaster. Eastchester, depite having a very good record over the last couple of seasons has laid a couple of major Eagle eggs in big games and needs to win something before they go from Eagles to Peacocks.

and let me rephrase – iona is not winning at all costs – just $14,000 costs.
their success is great for people like you who can stand proud with your iona football t-shirt on and boast about how good iona is – you will see when it effects your child.

  122. IonaPower

    facts

First of all I do not have an Iona Prep Football tee shirt as part of my wardrobe. Secondly Anthony Gentile was not forced to leave Iona Prep. Iona Prep is not doing anything different than any other succesfull football program. I know for a fact that the CHSFL AAA schools in Staten Island aggressively target student athletes. I am sure St. Anthony and Chaminade are targeting players and believe it or not Stepinac has been all over the Eastchester Blue Devils. Also don’t think for a second that New Rochelle, Harrison Rye etc are not doing their best in keeping players in their program.

  123. Footbal in the Air

    Iona Power and Facts,

Recruiting goes on all the time at Stepinac and Iona it comes down to those that are smarter get the top prospects.
Stepinac has a few former Eastchester Blue Devils Coaches
on their staff, thus giving them the inside to players in and outside of Eastchester. The older teams were comprised of kids from Yonkers, Mt Vernon and Greenburgh, enough said
there is your direct line into Stepinac.

  124. Huskies Forever

Eastchester played decent ball last season. They were hungry enough to beat a half way decent, banged up Harrison team, who just could’nt get it together in big game situations.I give them credit. However,we have’nt seen a real good Husky team in quite a few years. They seem to look good in scrimmage, but never delivered when it counts.Rye on the other hand has had a real good run.As much as I dislike Rye,they are a powerhouse program. How will they do in A? My guess is that they will compete in a big way.The Ossining/Rye season opener will be huge.I guarantee that this game will be a shocker.I think Rye will probably make it into playoffs. But that’s where things will get really tough. There won’t be anymore weak B league teams to run over….

  125. go eagles

    Jim,

I pretty much agree with what you said What do you consider “great”, A section win? Eastchester had a top 3-4 team in class A two years ago and top 5 last year. The 5 or six guys who contributed the last two years are seniors next year. They should be pretty good again. How good, remains to be seen. They need to break in a new QB who can throw, but who will he throw to? They also need to play better at the D-back position. That killed them vs Fox Lane the last two years.

Ossining will re-load, Rye, I think loses a lot, but will no doubt be a factor, Yorktown, Fox Lane and Nyack will all be in the mix. I honestly think that Harrison will be worse than last year. Not a shot, just an opinion. They lose more than what is coming up. That’s going to be the Eagles in 2011.

  126. we Go hArd

    Huskie forever

I think that ossining my give rye a run for thier money. ossining is not as talented as the years before but they got alot of good players returning it should be a game for the ages in class A.

  127. Huskies Forever

Ossining is a strong, tough, good example of what an “A” playoff contender should look like.If Rye can handle them, they got my respect…...

    FACTS

enough is enough… you want the truth…. the truth is Iona Prep requires all students to pay tution! it also requires all students to get accepted using the same criteria for all. There are a few players who applied to Iona this past fall who did not get in.. these players were said to be very good prospects with at least 1 on the same level as Jeff Mack. Those kids did not get in…

The truth is the staten island aggressively recruiits kids. Recruits them to the point that they don’t need to take the TACHS exam. If they show some promise on the football field they are in the school with a FULL RIDE without even seeing a report card. Neither Stepinac nor Iona Prep has done this…. Neither Stepinac or Iona Prep are giving free rides either…

Wether you like it or not the this is the truth of the matter. I have personal inside knowledge on these situations so please take my words at face value.

    What do you think?

  130. COACH DARLOS

    fact

And whats wrong with Tyrae Woodson’s family starting a new traditon for their family. Maybe his kids and and their kids will attend Iona? What wrong with that? And My son’s kids. My son is already talking about coaching at Iona one day. New Traditions are also good. Gentile didnt have to leave. We all wanted him to stay. He is a great kid. Good luck to him at New Haven.

  131. COACH DARLOS

    Crusaderwatch

Yeah correct some very very good players didnt get in. But they wont be going to Stepinac, lol

  132. CrusaderWatch

    Darlos,

I know… I know how you feel about the Crusaders. I think the Crusaders are a very good program. Not elite as of yet but on the right track… Have you heard anything about who they are getting?

What do you think of Iona’s chances beyond 2009. How are they set up with the younger levels and incoming freshman?

  133. COACH DARLOS

Parents need to care about their kids more. There is a alot of talent in the Youth. But kids need more parent support. It doesnt look good for alot kids if the parents dont get behind them.

  134. Sleepy Fan

Sleepy Hollow is the Favorite in class B now that Rye is gone, and by the way they will beat RYE this year, week 4. PUT IT IN THE BOOKS!!!

  135. FACTS:

    CRUSADERWATCH:
    YOU SAID:
“enough is enough… you want the truth…. the truth is Iona Prep requires all students to pay tution!”
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! THATS VERY FUNNY!

IONA HAS A 5 TO 1 RATIO OF EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE WHEN IT COMES TO ACADEMICS – THAT’S WHY THOSE KIDS DIDN’T GET IN.

  136. You've Got to be Joking!

CrusaderWatch you said “I have personal inside knowledge on these situations so please take my words at face value.” How can we possibly take you “at face value” when you use an idiotic screen name. Put your real name on the post and maybe we’ll start paying attention. For now your just another idiot blogger who claims to have “inside info”. If I had a nickel anytime someone came on this blog and claimed that anonymously I’d be a rich man! Right now we have absolutely no reason to “take you at face value”.

  137. Ebonics 101

NY FAN I didn’t realize they were teaching Ebonics/Text-typing over at NewRo, a class you obviously do very well at. Any chance you can re-post using English this time?

  138. Crusader Watch

    You’ve got to be jokin…

Your name is I think more idiotic than mine. I have been “watching the Crusaders for a while” which gave me the name Crusader Watch.

I will not have people on here attacking me personally which is why I choose an alias. Previously I have talked about my own son and him going through the process of picking one of these schools. My son is a child and some of you adults are not mature enough to leave him out of these discussions if you were to disagree with my posts. So I choose to be anonymous so you would not have the opportunity.

Now you want to know who I am….

    Here are the facts:
I am a youth football coach.
I know players at various schools because of my coaching history.
I know of the hardwork and struggle the parents and families of these “scholarship” athletes.. the ones that have sacrificed alot just to send their child to a school such as Iona Prep or Stepinac.
I know the REAL reason why people are mad at kids like Tyrae Woodson and Jeffrey Mack. And why certain people on this board don’t believe those kids deserve the chance other kids have. Why certain people think they there is no way they can afford such a school.
I know what it takes to get a kid into IONA PREP, STEPINAC, MOUNT, HAYES, etc. I have kids who attend all 4 schools who played for me and guess what the ones at IONA PREP pay more tuition than the ones at MOUNT. But no one wants to talk about that. .

If you want to know more I’ll be at White Plains HS for the shootout.

  139. Crusader Watch

    i forgot to mention…

    when I said pay more… i meant 1300 MORE!!!!!!

  140. Crusader Watch

    and thats PER MONTH!

  141. 3 Yards And A Cloud Of Dust

I agree with Crusader Watch, alot of families have to sacrifice for there kids to attend a private catholic school. My son going into 9th grade had the opportunity to go to St. Joes in Montvale. He went there for a day earlier this year, toured the school and talked to the coaches. The coaches even called the house after to pitch the school and the program. But with 2 kids in college already, it is not economically feasible. They even offered a half a scholarship because of his grades. But i the end, he will play for his public school. But people should not be hating on kids attending these schools. If they got the talent and grades and the families can swing it, more power to them.

  142. You've Got to be Joking!

hahahahaha you’ll be at the White Plains shootout huh? How will I recognize you, oh yeah, you’ll be the hot air balloon that’s full of $hi…...dude, you’re a joke. You’re just a typical loser who comes on here as a mr. know it all who’s really just living through kids. take shots at you? fat azz, you’re really not that important, no matter how much your ego tells you that you are. hmmm, so, you know the “real” reason huh, why don’t you enlighten all of us fools with your incredible wisdom and share with us mere mortals the “real” reason…..and jackazz, you can state all the “facts” you want, until you say who you are you can make any of that stuff up. here, i’ll show you….

Now you want to know who I am….

    Here are the facts:
I am an NFL football coach.
I know players at various schools because of my coaching history.
I know of the hardwork and struggle the parents and families of these “scholarship” athletes.. the ones that have sacrificed alot just to send their child to a school such as Rutgers or Syracuse.
I know the REAL reason why people are mad at kids like Michael Vick and Vince Young. And why certain people on this board don’t believe those guys deserve the chance other guys have. Why certain people think they there is no way they can afford the lawyers they have.
I know what it takes to get a kid into RUTGERS, SYRACUSE, PENN ST., PITTSBURGH, etc. I have kids who attend all 4 schools who played for me and guess what the ones at RUTGERS pay more tuition than the ones at PENN ST. But no one wants to talk about that…

You’re a jackazz, probably have always been a jackazz, and will always be a jackazz.

Pleasantville has to be the pre season favorite they lost in the title game to Rye. They beat the other contender this year in Edgemont. They play the other contender in week six Nanuet so they’ll be wel tested for the playoffs. They have a solid core of seniors many of them started on one or both sides of the ball.

  146. mom in the stands

I have something I would like to say you guys are really out of control with this whole who is playing at this school and who is paying what. Like someone mention in a prior post you do not know what struggles or sacrifices a family has to obtain to send a kid to a private school. Let the kids fulfill there educational requirements and play football. You men need to set examples for these young men because I am sure these players that have been mention have looked at this blog and read some of these comments.

First of Pleasantville is going to be one of the top teams in class b and same with nanuet and edgemont. I dont know about sleepy maybe if they get some more 20 and 21 year olds to play on the team like two years ago they will be good.

  150. The Donald

Oh I love the Pleasantville fans. They are so witty. Sleepy will keep playing the 21 yr olds as long as you keep playing the pocantico hills kids that make your team good. Rainy game at your field two years ago still bothers you does it? LOL

SOUNDS LIKE CRUSADER WATCH JUST CALLED YOU OUT!!!!! I PUT MY MONEY ON CRUSADER WATCH.

    Crusader Watch:
all joking aside – there a alot of kids in, lets just say the “chsfl”, that are absolutely not paying anything in tuition – trust me! but hey, more power to the schools that have the resources to do that.

    these blogs are great!

  152. dbp81

    Fellas,

why the bashing of the chsaa? Yes, some of the athletes do go to school on tuition reductions and that is a decision that each school must make on its own but the public schools have a monopoly on taxpayer money and budgets that blow away the catholics. Maybe, some of the anti private/catholic school bloggers could explain why a student should be forced to go one of the failing publics in the area? Some people do not have the resources to vote against their local public school by moving so they take the best available opportunity for their child and send him to a private school with some help from that school.
When it comes to playoffs the chsaa does not compete against the publics so what is the complaint on that issue?
Face it, Section 1 football is weak. Yes, there are lots of talented players but the level of competition, overall, is not that strong. That is why many better players go to iona, mount, or stepinac and the rockland guys go to jersey. You also seem to get better recognition in the catholics/privates because of their limited flexible scheduling. Hell, eastchester couldn’t even fill out their schedule in section 1.
Stop bashing the chsaa and enjoy your own team and league.

  153. coach darlos

I was at the ne vs nj practice yesterday. It will be a great game on Sunday. I was hanging out with Joe Thiesman. Even though I am a COWBOY FAN. 155. section 1

who are the best quarterbacks at this tournament?

  156. Somers

    To Eastchester,

Your team is just a physical line and a fast running back or quaterback. You guys r chock artist face it and do not go after harrison who was not a good team and almost beat you. Face it your team has a bad attittude don’t talk smack. Lokk what happened to you guys against Somers last year it was 28-6 with r back up running and left tackle. Never Leave somers out of the picture.

  157. go eagles

    Somers,

How were your SAT’s, judging by your post, not very good.

As for last yr, the Eagles didn’t have their QB, and in that offense, we needed him.

The Eagles won the year before with him. Hopefully there will be a rubber match in the sectionals this year.

  158. The Donald

    Pville Fan,

Your 100% right. Pville is the hands down favorite to win B this year with Edgemont and Nanuet close behind. I hope Nanuet and edgemont know this as well. As for Sleppy Hollow. Maybe they have enough to field a team this year.

  159. You've Got to be Joking!

  160. observer

    wp tiger,

I dont know if the rumors about the New Ro QB are true, but even without him LAST year New Ro would have still beat you. You’re not quite on New Ro’s level yet from the performances i saw last year, considering you lost your QB to graduation and he was the only playmaker on your team. Without him White Plains is just another Gorton/Lincoln to New Ro.

  161. Hollow

    Hey Donald Duck
You must be out of your mind, we will see at the WP shoot-out if Sleepy fields a team. I hope we draw PV first, so therefore we can send them on their merry way.

  162. eagle power

    Somers,

Last year was your year! but o wait who choked? Who had six turnovers against nyack in the playoffs? Eastchester didn’t have thier starting inside linebcker, and qb when they played you. remember it was 14-6 with three min left in the third qtr.
You also needed to change your entire defense from a year ago, becuase you were schooled. I love watching the bowl game, and seeing your d line get blown off the ball about six or seven yards evey play. You never did have a good line in somers.

  163. WingTGuy

    Eagle Power,

You are starting in already. Last year all we heard was how Eastchester was going to take care of Nyack and we did not stand a chance against you in the playoffs. Then you did not make the playoffs.

!7-3 is a great record. But if you want to move into the elite programs in the section you will need to at least get to the sectional finals a few times.

You lost to the runners up two years ago and did not make the playoffs last year. It will take more than a great regular season record to move into the elite programs.

It appears you will have another strong team this year. You would be better off talking about that and stop trashing other programs. You will garner more support for your team that way.

My early read on Class A is Ossining, Rye, Yorktown, Eastchester and Fox Lane are the front runners with Ossining and Rye at the head of the class.

Nyack, Harrison, Somers, Poughkeepsie in the next level.

Poughkeepsie as the sleeper. They could be better then expected.

Looking forward to another great year of high school football.

    And Hollow:

I am pretty sure that Donald is a Sleepy fan. He was being ironical…

  164. Get a job eagle power

    Eagle Power,

Wing T Guy is right lets not talk about the past u should focus and talk about this years team. Maybe talk about your strengths. Look foward to seeing what all this hype about ehs is on saturday at Rye’s 7 on 7. Both Rye and Iona prep will make you look silly like they did last year. Get your popcorn ready cause it will expose all this nonsense u talk about!

  165. The Donald

    Wing T Guy,

    You know me to well.

  166. Huskies Forever

    I got a glimpse of Iona,only because I was in the area.Man those guys are big.I’m talking gorillas.Looked like a college team…

  167. The Donald

Name one player from Pocantico that has contributed to Pleasantville in the last decade

  168. dm50

Is Iona going to at the Big Apple 7on7 or the Rye 7on7? Aren’t they both this saturday?

  169. Eagle power

First of all wing T guy,

I am not bashing, just defending. Look at the previous posts. People are and always have bashed eastchester. Go to the top and scroll down. See who began the slander, then make your opinion.
Secondly last year eastchester beat Rye in the 7 on 7. They did loose to Iona. Remember, we are a running team first.

  170. Eagle power

Also just a question. Is somers considered an elite team in A??

For the record, they haven’t even been to a sectional final in A, and I don’t think they’ve even won a bowl game in A. We’ve won 2.

Just because Mr. Dematteo is a state champion, and elite coach doesn’t mean that makes somers an elite team. And if you say it does, then by accomplishments in A you need to include eastchester in the elite.

  171. WingTGuy

I stand corrected – no bashing- but a lot of excuse making and chest pounding.

The same MO as last year.

By the way the statement that started all your defensiveness was far from slanderous. Go back up the thread and read it.

As far as Somers. You need to do some more research on their playoff accomplishments, but by the standard of no Section finals they are not there. They do have more than 2 years of great regular season records.

I am not sure what you mean by you beating Rye at the 7 on 7. Are you using that for rationale for being an elite Class A program?

I hope Eastchester has a great season this year and an opportunity to take the next step in the playoffs.

  172. IonaPower

Iona will indeed participate in the Rye 7-7. People need to realize that most coaches are trying to implement their systems at this stage. If Eastchester beats Rye or Iona Prep this Saturday I do not think it has a bearing on how well Rye or Iona Prep will do this year. This applies for every school that works at these camps.

  173. Mrs. Sanchez

Iona Prep will be attending the Rye 7on7 this saturday June 13

  174. eagle power

    Wint T guy,

Thank you for your kind words. the rye 7 on 7 comment was by no means to say how good we were in A. It was a posting to “Get a jon eagle Power”

My point is not to bash anyone. Somers is a great team. But it’s amazing how many people don’t want to give eastchester the credit they deserve, so we are always on the defensive.
Somers most would consider an elite team, they have had good records since moving to A. But eastchester has done more in it’s first two years than Somers did in A. That’s my only point. as far as body of work, our last four seasons we were 7-2,6-3,9-1,8-2. Yes i agree we need to get to a sectional final, hopefully that will come.

Remember, eastchester stopped Harrison’s 22 game win streak against class A schools. We also had quality wins against Nyack, Somers and Harrison. Along with two bowl championships. We are not an elite team, but we are on our way.

  175. joe

hey kevin are you attending rye 7 on 7 or what?

  176. The Boss

Did eastchester not make the playoffs last year? im serious, did they make it i dont know?

  177. Football in the air

    Eagle Power,

Stop with the love fest it makes me sick, tell us what number your kid is so we can look out for him on saturday at Rye hopefully he’s a back or linebacker or wr. I actually think eagle power is FRANCO CUTS 824 from last year. At the least Franco Cuts named his kid!

  178. The Donald

people get a grip. a 7 on 7 tourny in June is nothing more then a touch football game. It has no bearing on who will beat who in the fall. Leave it for what it is. A measuring stick for the coaches. THATS IT

  179. Eagle power

My son will be the one wearing the red eagles jersey

  180. Football in the air

    Eagle Power,

Who should we be looking out for tomorrow, on the offensive and defensive side of the ball other then the guys in red!

  181. ionaprep crazed

It is 7 on 7 fellas,

Last year Don Bosco studs lost to New Canaan in a 7 on 7 game. do think New Canaan can beat Don Bosco in a real game.

  182. ChiefWildEagle

Man Oh Man, it is only JUNE.
    Where to start?
“They have been very aggressive in getting in front of kids playing for good youth programs like the Eastchester Blue Devils.” They is Stepinac. Nice of them and Iona raiding kids from all the local public schools and then telling us how great they are. If all these kids stayed home and played just think how much better their public schools teams and eventually the schools themselves would be.

Glad to see that both the “Has beens”=Harrison and “Never Weres”=Eastchester fans are back at it already.
Is Harrison going to be that weak this year? I do not know. One can only hope. But not to worry Huskie fans, someone will move in to Harrison before September, happens every year. Is Artie done painting the apartment yet?

Just love it that everyone still hates Somers. Lets see what The Don can do with no talent this year.

As for Sleepy fan and The Donald: you guys can go back to beating your chests now that you are back in B.
Big deal your playing Rye!!! You Horses’ Asses ducked Ossining this year and put and end to a resumption of one of the best rivalries in New York State. Too bad Ricci didn’t let the starters play in the second half. You would have had an ass kicking for the ages.
PS: Thanks again to the Ignorant Interloper from Rockland, one Chuckie Scarp for blocking Ossining-Sleepy ‘09.
Whats the matter Chuck, too much work to host a game that fans actually show up for? What a Clown.

As for the rest of Class A: What does Nyack and Yorktown have coming up the pipe to reload their programs?
And as someone said here, be very wary of Po’Keepsie. Speed kills. A Dutchess Officiating Crew doesn’t hurt either!!!!

Ossining-Rye should be a great game. How well will Ossining reload? What new wrinkles will Dino and the Garnets come up with? Will Ossining be ready to shake its rep as a slow starter out of the gate on opening day? Can Mickey Mouse take down another Legend?

Guess we all just have to wait and see.
See you in September, See you when the Summers through…..

  183. IonaPower

    ChiefWildEagle

Student athletes want to play for a program like Iona Prep so all this crap about Iona raiding public school players is garbage. I did not realize that it is an obligation to attend the local public school. IT IS ALL ABOUT CHOICES!!!

Why would a player not want to play for Iona Prep. The education is excellent. They play in arguably the most competitive Football league in the state which is the CHSFL AAA. I guess when you are asked to play in the Meadowlands against powerhouse programs like Bergen Catholic the few jealous haters come out and talk nonsense. Lastly check some of the rating from ESPM Rise and MSG which could explain why Iona Prep is a great place to attend school and play sports.

It is only June and already teams like Iona and Stepinac are getting bashed.

  184. Don't Count Yur Chickens

IonaPrepCarzed….Iona was second choice, New Rochelle was asked to play in the Giants Stadium Game a couple of years ago, but couldn’t because Section 1 wouldn’t allow them to miss a section 1 game to do it. And you say “competitive”, I say over rated. You put Yonkers High, Lincoln, Saunders, Roosevelt, Gorton (the last couple of years), Hastings, and Ardsley together in the same league (they are all located within 10 miles of each other), and you’d have a highly competitive league also, because they all are horrible teams. So it would be competitive, but it wouldn’t be good football. And, let me ask you this. When you have the same team that wins the championship for 7 years in a row, how in the world is that competitive? Sounds like it was a league that had a dominant team, and a bunch of wanna be’s that couldn’t keep up to me, pretty much the exact opposite as competitive.

  185. IonaPower

    Don’t Count Yur Chickens

Once again like you have in the past you make comments that are unintelligent and downright moronic.

Here are the facts- St. Peters Prep and Bergen Catholic along with Mike Quick of MSG wanted Iona Prep to represent New York in the Meadowlands.

If you think the CHSFL AAA is overated then how come the Massey Computer High School ratings had 4 teams in the top 25 in New York State.

If you think Iona Prep was overated then take a look at the MSG and ESPN High School rankings and see who was the only team in this area that was ranked.

Your comment about St. Anthony and a bunch of Wanna be’s is a joke. First of all St. Anthony before losing to Iona beat another area team Mount St. Michael by less than 6 points in the previous 2 champiosnhip games. St. Anthony also has beaten in those 7 years teams like Farrell and Chaminade by close games in the championship.

Also Stepinac who did not make the CHSFL AAA playoffs easily handled White Plains who made the Section 1 semifinals and gave New Rochelle a good game in the playoffs.

Most intelligent High School Football fans will acknowledge teh CHSFL AAA as a highly competitive league great balance from top to bottom. How else can you explain a top notch program like Mount St. Michael being a number 9 seed in the 12 team league. How else can you explain Stepinac who has a very good team not making it in the CHSFL AAA this year and being forced to move to the less competitive CHSFL AA league.

It is too bad that people need to spin misinformation about certain teams and leagues.

    Chief wild Eagle,

Chiefy,Chiefy,Chiey. I think the florida sun and early bird specials this winter has finaly put you over the top. I told you to ask Micky Mouse the reason why the teams are not playing this year. Thats the only homework assignment I gave you this spring. Did you? I doubt it. To busy reliving that tough loss last year? It’s over. Time to move on.

As for your geinus comment about Sleepy playing Rye this year as not a big deal. Well. Just proves the fact that you spent to much time in the Florida sun this winter.

Anyway. Welcome beck. Enjoy your Boston Cream pie and Lawernce Welk reruns. Look forword to blogging with you this year.

    ignorance…ignorance…ignorance…

Considering I never played in the CHSFL and played in the “weak” section I public schools, It would seem that I would be biased to some degree over one instead of the other. But that’s not the case…

Coach Coach O’Donnell is a great coach at Stepinac, hes also a great Athletic Director and takes care of his kids. He’s also not a complainer…so this new CHSFL league rule isnt from “Stepinac Complaining”. I never went to Stepinac, but being a coach at the school in a sport OTHER than FOOTBALL he has given the time and money necessary to help out all teams (Track, Basketball, Lacrosse, Tennis).

People knock the CHSAA when in reality it is intense and exciting football. When you dont have state wide funding like the Publics you must charge admission in order to pay teachers, equipment, etc. You people tend to forget that portion…it’s not like the money is going straight to a head governing position…oh wait, it used to-luckily the Archdiocese isn’t in control anymore-all the money earned at Stepinac and Iona can be used in that school for their benefits. Also Stepinac has a great football program. They’re also looking to improve their track and fields on the campus grounds. Having a new field (turf or even irrigated grass) with new surroundings can improve recruitment chances.

Yes tuition at some of these private/catholic schools is high, but the scholarships help those with good grades and athletic standing attend school. Because lets face it-SOME schools in Westchester County alone are horrible in ALL aspects of sports, appearance, teachers, average graduation rate. The ability to get kids from various school districts gives you a multi talented team which makes the league even stronger-you’re not just given kids in the district and expected to make a state champion out of them. These tuition based schools are somewhat of a college run entity. If you have the money, or the talent/grades to go to an Iona over, say Roosevelt, then why not?

But also that’s what makes the Sections great in their own way. It’s early June and people are already bashing each others teams…FATHERS are on here posting blogs talking smack about another man’s son’s team…You’re given a group of kids from a school, and expect to win with them. The current Rye streak, as well as Dobbs Ferry’s former run doesn’t make it a dominant team with wannabes, its a Great team in competitive games. You got some of the most famous head coaches in Dino Garr, Tony Dematteo, etc…When I used to play Football in High School I played against these teams, and some of these coaches, and it was an awesome feeling knowing I got to be part of something special.

the CHSFL is different from the Public, each better in their own way…I went to a small Public School in Mid-Westchester County, Class C/Class B during my days…the environment was great, I miss it still. I’m sure I would have loved going to a St John the Baptist School in Long Island, or a Stepinac, or Iona, or St Joe by the sea…

And some of you are right-a 5 Team Yonkers league with Hastings might be competitive based on recent team performance, no matter what the school size…but it wont happen so lets not jump the gun and say it should be done. I recall Hastings putting up some good matchups in recent years to teams like Dobbs, Westlake, Rye Neck.

BTW…you guys know Croton-Harmon won the big apple 7 on 7 right? a small Class C team out gunned the CHSFL, an upstate AA team, and a Connecticut team along with a mix of other section I teams…so “weak” isn’t a term I would use on the Public Schools…

OH AND TO WHOEVER SAID STEPINAC HAD A SUPER SENIOR…if that was towards Maurice Easterling you should be banned from blogging and banned from a lot of things…Mo is a good kid and an AMAZING Long/Triple Jumper..he’s up at the STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS in Track and Field…something I’m sure most of you people in here CAN’T DO…

    HSFB,

I agree with you on alot you say. Not so crazy about the public school teacher comment though. You have bad teachers everywhere. Lets face it. A private school teacher is paid lower then a public school teacher and in most cases bolt once a public school job comes up. Does that make the quality of private school teachers worse?

  190. jack mehoff

any news on the 7 on 7. was kevin devaney even there?

  191. Croton Football Fan

It is nice to win a 7 on 7 game. But the real deal is can you hit people. Get into the weight room and push the plates.
The line is the real deal. Croton had no line two years ago and went 2 – 6. The fat boys returned and they win the section. So go get some fat boys to play the line and get them into the weight room. Most high school teams throw the ball about 5 times a game. Good Luck and work hard, because some other kid is out there working out real hard coming for you.

  192. 7 on 7

Who cares about 7 on 7? Do you really think Croton Harmon could play with Stepinac, Carmel, North Rockland, White Plains or John Jay? 7 on 7 is about getting reps, and teaching your kids your system.

  193. Crusader Watch

I was at BOTH the Rye 7 on 7 and the White Plains 7 on 7. Of course I was there to see Iona at (Rye) and Stepinac (at White Plains). I came away from both scrimmages with a very good impression. As previously stated a 7 on 7 is used by a football coach as an opportunity to work on the passing game. Coaches use 7 v 7 to work on timing, route running, combo routes offensively and then defensive coverages. It’s a chance for DB’s to work with LB’s on various zone responsibilities and what not. It is not an indication of who will beat who during a regulation game of 11 v 11.

Iona Power or Iona Crazed did you make it to Rye or White Plains on Saturday?

HSFB Guy I agree with a lot of what you say. How do you think the Crusaders will do in 2009? What kind of incoming class do they have?

    What do you think?

  194. killa

sombody gunna tell me thier super 11 picks or what

  195. BulldogsFaN

What do people think about Irvington this yr they got a really good back field this yr They got Crisara, Purcelle, Degnan, Recine, Mchmahon, and etc…

  196. HSFB Guy

obviously there’s bad teachers everywhere…but I’m saying how everyone tends to believe that this is a factor that is never considered…I won’t name names, but some schools have actually good teacher scores/ratings, while others don’t. Both in Public and Private, Public and Catholic, even in College. My college I graduated from-Mercy College-has great professors who I owe a great education to, as well as some professors where I wondered “how in the hell are you a College Professor???”

and 7 on 7 may be just for coaches decisions and to get some work in, but if have an in team passing shell in October it further evaluates how you are in the passing scheme (I enjoyed those practices, being a linemen we did some one on one drills and some line drills but mostly got to watch the passing shell games). Sounding modest there on how its nice to win it, but means nothing…Croton Harmon lost a regular season game then went on a run to beat Dobbs and Westlake in the Class C semi finals and finals, respectively, and that Class C final was done through the Air…the bombs I was seeing…no wonder that qb is going to Marist….

You forget some schools don’t have great QB arms…the Wing T/Wishbone/Option teams tend to have a faster scrambling qb and a great line and backfield. The spread/shotgun/passing formations that rely on down field threats and speedy receivers means a qb’s arm must be loaded. My high school we NEVER had a great qb arm…to this day its alot of running plays (option, i form, wing t, occasionally a passing play). so while it means nothing in june, you can see how your offense plays, add in some linemen and contact, and you can get a feel/vibe for your season…thats all I was saying…to have an offense scheme where your qb and receivers can run with bigger schools and be competitive is amazing (although section1recruting.com doesn’t mention if there was a record amount of incompletions-haha)

Crusader Watch-I’m a little nervous and anxious for August/September to start. The Track season ended a few weeks ago, as I was Watching Stepinac-who was in the mini camp off season practice. They were in no pads and did mostly drills and plays…with Maurice and alot of top college players graduating, I know its early but it came off as give and take. I was talking to one of the baseball kids who knows the team well and some of the position changes make sense, others dont. since they’re in AA, and no Iona game, they have a great shot at playoffs…talked to one of the returning seniors, who happens to be the Step’s top thrower in track and field, and he knows alot of next years opponents and agrees that they have a great chance. I noticed alot of option and option based runs from thier offense in the camp, though the passing shell proves that they can still throw the ball and be successful. I haven’t seen the incoming classes yet, I think the JV unit looks solid as well, but again from what I saw its all potential. When they have their July Camp (if thats even allowed anymore) I can get a better judgment.

  197. ChiefWildEagle

Joey, what the hell are you talking about?
I never commented on the Yonkers schools and Hastings.
    Get your act together.
Donald: Chucky is the reason Ossining-Sleepy ‘09 is not going to happen. I know you cannot accept this fact, but a fact it is.
PS: Don’t get me mixed up with Big Joe, I have many years to go before I can become a Snow Bird.

  198. The Donald

    Chiefy,

Please forgive Joey. He saw a stupid comment and equated it to you. I have no idea why he would do that.

Chiefy,, The games not going to happen this year. Time to put on your big boy pants, belly up to the bar and accept it. How about this.. Instead of sleepy moving up a class to play Ossining, why dosn’t Ossining move up a class and play New Ro? That would be a great game. Please check with Mickey and get back to me.
