Has it really been 11 days?
It hit me today that I hadn’t checked in on the blog in a while. I was shocked when I learned it had been this long. I’ve been spending most of my time covering high school golf, which is now in the postseason, on the golf blog (yes, it’s riveting stuff). This time of year, though, is typically quiet so don’t assume I’ve lost any passion for football or hoops. I haven’t.
Some things to pass along:
– Two more local basketball players are headed to the Northeast-10 Conference. Jonathan Schofield of Hamilton will play for Southern Connecticut. Alex Judge of Croton-Harmon is headed to Pace.Schofield missed much of last season because of suspension but is a versatile talent who’ll fit in perfectly in that league. He’s a Randy Wilson-type with his size and ability to get to the basket. As you remember, Wilson starred at Peekskill before a solid career at Pace.
Judge has the talent to be a star in that league, evidenced by his effort in the Senior All-Star Game when he nearled upstaged Sherrod Wright. Judge is a gifted shooter who really broke out this season and is only going to get better as he get stronger.
– Also in basketball, Rye Neck has apparently cut its list of candidates to replace Frank Morretti down to four. A decision should be coming soon. Obviously, Rye Neck struggled two years ago and snuck into the Class B playoffs last season. But this is a program with great potential. The football, soccer and baseball teams are good almost every single year. Why not basketball? If a coach gets in there and convinces a few more of the football and baseball players to come out — similar to the Dearwester, Spano, Spedafino team from a few years ago — this is a team that could be back in the mix. – Frenji Sports will host the 2nd annual Frankie Williams Charity Classic on Thursday, June 4 at the Theodore Young Community Center in Greenburgh. Doors open at 6:30 and game time is 7:30.Last year’s rosters were loaded with the elite talent from tri-state area, including Lance Stephenson and Durand Scott. This year’s rosters will be star-studded, for sure. Lance will almost certainly be back and I highly recommend seeing him if you never have. I’ll try to get confirmation of names in the next few days.
Former Nets star Kenny Anderson will be a celebrity coach. Lincoln coach Tiny Morton, who’s a celebrity in local basketball I suppose, will be on the other bench.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids under 13. All proceeds go towards the development of grassroots basketball through the Frenji Sports program. It also helps us raise Health Awareness for Kidney Disease and Cancer.
– The Section 1 Recruiting Player Evaluation Day is set for Saturday at New Rochelle. Check back for more details this week. – Football teams will begin minicamps and 7 on 7s————————————-
Otherwise, I hope everyone is having a great spring. I haven’t forgotten about doing the player profiles on the guys headed to play college football. I just want to get a few more done before I start posting them. It likely won’t be until after the state golf tournament, which is this Sunday and Monday up at Cornell.

I’ve watched AJ play ball from CYO thru AAU to High School Ball. It will fun going to watch a local boy play college ball local. Another Success Story for Coach Thom.
Kevin,
i hope they let the press play the rtj course at cornell, its supposed to be an excellent track. You have a tough job somedays.
FRANKIE WILLIAMS GAME info is posted on http://www.nychoops.net.
The rosters and coaches are listed and they are a who’s who of bigtime players from the Classes of 2009 and 2010.
Lance, Kilpatrick, Henriquez, Durand Scott, Sherrod, Watts, Dante Taylor and many more are listed. Looks like another great event.
nychoops.net says Durand Scott is playing in this years event. Kemba Walker played in last years game.
I wonder if they will add any surprise players?
Seems to me that they covered everybody.
Kevin,
So far we have about 80 players from 21 schools registered for the PED. For all those who still want to make sure they get a Section1Recruiting Under Armour T-Shirt, please mail in your registration forms by today, Tuesday May 26th. We max out at 250 players (at this point I’m not sure if we’ll get to that number), so if your going to walk up on Saturday to register, please get there early. Registration begins at 8am in the end zone of the game field closest to the school. I hope we do get to 250 players because this is a perfect situation to show case how hard you’ve worked this winter to get bigger, stronger, faster, quicker. I know the players at New Rochelle have been working very hard, both in the weight room and agility sessions, and this is the culmination of our winter workout season. The last three years we’ve averaged about 30 players at this event (between Varsity and JV), and I think the results of preparing for this Player Evaluation Day speak for themselves on the field. It’s a great goal to have while working hard in the winter! Congrats to all who have signed up already, and I hope every school in Section 1 is represented this Saturday!
Rumor has it that there will additional celebrities at the Charity game in addition to Kenny Anderson and Tiny Morton.
Players and coaches as well will be there. These guys work hard to promote high level basketball for the Westchester basketball community. Remember summer basketball is as high a level as any winter basketball games. Players great better in the summer.
This will be the only time Westchester has 2 McDonalds All-Americans in the same gym on our turf. Lance Stephenson and Dante Taylor. Thats crazy. If you look at the list of players, everybody is going D1. Even Pope could have gone D1 if he opted to go to prep school next year. Thats crazy.
I SAW THAT JORDAN LESSANE IS UNDECIDED. IS HE GOING OVERSEAS OR THE NBA DRAFT – LOL!
from what I hear lessane is going to prep school if he doesnt find a school, d1 or d2 during this off-season.
Kevin, any idea who the candidates are for the Rye Neck job or when a decision will be made?
a sad state that somebody will be paying tiny morton money to be a celebrity coach along with kenny anderson who has fathered 7 kids with 4 or 5 different women. Story was in the daily news last month.
RYE NECK CANDIDATES FROM WHAT I HEAR: KEN BAUER (FORMER UMASS LOWELL HEAD COACH), NICK MANCUSO, ANTHONY NICODEMO. THE FOURTH GUY IS A ????
AS FOR THOSE GUYS AT FRENJI PAYING TINY MORTON TO COME COACH AS A GUEST COACH…I DOUBT IT! THE GUY IS A FLAT OUT GREAT COACH. I BELIEVE HE HAS TRIES TO THE COMMUNITY FROM WHAT I HEAR.
AS FOR KENNY ANDERSON, HE HAS BEEN INDUCTED INTO THE NYC BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME, RIVERSIDE CHURCH HALL OF FAME AND MOLLOY HS HALL OF FAME RECENTLY. WHAT HE DID IN HIS PERSONNEL LIFE HAS NO BARING ON HIS ABILITY TO TRY TO GIVE BACK NOW. GIVE HIM A BREAK. WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES.
Kennedy Catholic has let go Colin Hanahoe after just one season. Hanahoe was the JV coach for Coach Nelligan, I am hearing that he had “time managment problems” He has ben replaced with a Coach Tom Kelly wha worked on the staff of Bob Hurley Sr. at St, Anthony’s. I will post more when I hear more. As far as Rye NEck goes I have heard that Hastings coach Dennis Hurlie and former Port Chester coach Tom Corbia also were interviewed.
and 1
i had some dealings with ken barer this year and he would be a steal for rye neck.he was 7 years at lowel mass.and got a tough deal with new AD.he should be head coach in D1 or 2.i am surprised he is looking at HS.
WHO GOT THE RYE NECK JOB, I HEARD IT WAS BETWEEN HURLIE AND THE GUY FROM U-MASS LOWELL, ALSO A GUY WHO WAS AN ASSISTANT FROM CLARKSTOWN NORTH
Why would Hurlie, who has had success at a bigger program, Hastings, have any interest in coming to RN?
does anyone have any information on Vin Minotti, the RCDS basketball coach, former Mamaroneck basketball coach?
Whats up with Coach Vin ??
I’ve heard some good things about him and was wondering about having my child apply to RCDS but I wondered if anyone had any info on him they could share with me. Thanks.
baller,
his email is vin@byardsports.com
