Pennell fans 21

May
14

In case you didn’t see it in today’s Journal News, Rye Neck pitcher Ryan Pennell struck out 21 batters in a no-hitter yesterday against Blind Brook. The 6-foot-3 junior got the “benefit” of needing to get four outs in two of the innings, so 21 of 23 outs he recorded in the seven-inning game were via the K.

Yes, I’m aware that this is a football and basketball blog, although Pennell is a former standout in both sports at Rye Neck (he’d probably be a Top 5 QB next season if he still played). The reason I’m mentioning this is to pose a question to the football and basketball readers: Can you remember anything quite like this in your sports?

Pennell pitched pretty much the best game you could imagine, even with the two walks. How does this stack up against the greatest single-game performances in football or basketball? Does anything quite compare in terms of dominance?

I think what Jeff Mack did to lead Iona Prep to the CHSFL championship last season — 393 yards rushing and seven touchdowns on 24 carries — was remarkable.

Figured I’d just throw that out there.

  2. Leagues

21 strikeouts is still 21 strikeouts!!

I am sure he would do quite well in A or AA

  3. Dr. Hudson

Lets stick to Basketball & Football?

  4. info:

YOU GUYS ARE NUTS! THERE IS PRETTY MUCH NOTHING THAT COMPARES TO THAT. I AM SURE IF YOU DID RESEARCH THERE ARE ALOT MORE ATHLETES THAT RAN FOR 300+YARDS THEN PITCHERS THROWING NO-HITTERS AND VIRTUALLY STRIKING OUT EVERY SINGLE BATTER THAT STEPPED TO THE PLATE – THAT’S CRAZY – GOOD FOR HIM. I DON’T CARE WHAT LEVEL THAT IS. THAT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO DO – WOW!

  5. pville guy

how about when kyl jones single handley led pleasantville to the section championships with his great games

  6. Liars are Cowards

this dude should play football. if he’s such a good athlete why not play class c football? sounds like he could finally lead rye neck past dobbs and get a ‘chip!

  7. spitcer

Ryan Pennell and a certain Zack Tax of RCDS are the best pitchers in the section.

  8. ..

Zack Tax just recently set the league record for strikeouts at 85 this season

    Kevin,

Your last post was 5/14. There has got to be something out there “blog worthy” over the past week.

For example, I think the latest signing period is over. Any unannounced commitments to be covered?

We’re beginning to think you are spending too much time on the links or with your pup :)

  10. section 1

Tony Taylor the former standout basketball player from Stepinac last year had a dominate season like this kid is having. Tony had 54 point game, hit over sixty threes, average almost 30 a game, and he played in a way more dominate league then this pitcher is playing in. So there is a basketball guy.

  11. Facts

    section 1

Ryan Pennell was on the winning side in his performance, Tony Taylor was on the “losing” side in his 54pt game…therefore no where near as “dominant”...

  12. section 1

    Facts

that is very true, but Ryan Pennell who is a pitcher has a lot more control over his own and team performance. i was just saying overall if you look at Tony’s stats he had a pretty dominate season and played in a way better league.

  13. name

to the person who said “this dude should play football. if he’s such a good athlete why not play class c football? sounds like he could finally lead rye neck past dobbs and get a ‘chip!”

Yes he should be playing football, especially last season. Not being able to throw is what hurt rye neck football in the end. Apparently Pennell was the starting quarterback last season but quit a few months before the season to focus on baseball. He could have led rye neck further then they went and STILL been great at baseball. shame
