Coming up

While I was away I missed a great column Rick Carpiniello wrote on former Harrison football coach Art Troilo Sr., who is being honored along with the 1973 and 1987 teams at a dinner tomorrow night at the Canyon Club. Carpiniello played on the ‘73 team.

The story highlights how Troilo remained coach of the ‘73 team despite a teachers strike three weeks into the preseason. Troilo told his assistants they should join the strike and he coached the team by himself. The team went undefeated.

Carp also explains how, if not for an injury to Troilo during his senior year at Syracuse, the Hall of Fame career of Jim Brown would have started a little later.

Harrison will be hosting a golf outing tomorrow morning and then the dinner at night.

Somers will hold its outing on Friday at Putnam National, and New Rochelle will hold its fundraiser golf event on June 22 at Split Rock. If you’re interested in attending, playing or sponsoring, click here to download the brochure and sign-up sheet.

Art Troilo Sr. has always been a true gentleman. I’ll always remember him telling stories at a picnic honoring Rye coach John Nugent several years ago when he retired. Coach Troilo always had the respect of his players as well as his rivals….a class act. The 1973 team was great. Mitty McGee handing off to Seth Morris for four yds. and a cloud of dust all day long as Harrison methodically beat you up was a pleasure to watch. The 1987 team was very good, but not in the same class with 1973 1964, 1981, the Sammy teams or the 2002 team. Much like the 1960 team…they went undefeated, but needed almost everything to break their way…not taking anything away from them but some of the other Huskie teams were more dominant.

Harrison football has great tradition. Artie Jr. has been taking some hits lately and Im not sure what happens behind the scenes but hes a great coach.
Greg Paulus is gonna go to Cuse and play football. Gonna be great to see him in the sport he should have chosen
