Pope to play at St. Rose

Iona Prep guard Andre Pope decided this week that he’ll play for the College of St. Rose.
St. Rose is a very good Division II program located up in Albany. Shanty Robinson of Mount Vernon, Kyl Jones of Pleasantville and Mike DePaoli of North Salem all went there and did very well.
Pope, a Greenburgh resident, started for three seasons for Iona Prep. The 5-foot-11 combo guard scored 1,000 in his career and was the foundation for which this year’s CHSAA A Division and state championship team was built on.
He’s always been a phenomenal 3-point shooter and defender. In college, he’s going to play more point guard and will have to learn to crete more off the dribble and penetrate. Pope is such a smart player that I don’t think it will be a difficult transition for him.

Good for Andre. He’ll get a lot more playing time than if he went the DI route as originally thought with NJIT, Charleston and Rhode Island looking at him. Way to go Andre!
Any word on where the likes of Jordan Lessane, Odayne Clark are going?
Andre Pope had a very nice High School career for Iona Prep. It is good to hear that he will have an athletic scholarship and an opportunity to earn a college degree. Good luck.
Great news for Andre Pope. St Rose is a good school and has been a very solid program for a long time. I think Pope can be a nice fit in that conference. If he continues to shoot it as well as he did earlier in the year he’ll get playing time.
Hoops fan
Conroy Baltimore did very well at the Providence Jam Fest. He was part of the profiles from NYHOOPS.com.
On the football side the CHSFL AAA released their power rankings and schedule. Very disappointed to see Stepinac ranked 13th and thus moved to the CHSFL AA. Fordham Prep was ranked 12th and will stay in the CHSFL AAA but plays an easier league schedule than the higher seeded teams.
The football seeds were as follows.
1. Iona
2. St. Anthony
3. Chaminade
4. St. Joseph of Staten Island
5. Holy Cross
6. Farrell
7. Holy Trinity
8. Xaverian
9. Mount St. Michael
10 St. Francis
11 Kellenberg
12 Fordham prep
By seeing Mount seeded #9 just shows the strength of the CHSFL AAA. Stepinac was hurt by the fact that their JV and freshmen teams had poor records last year which plays a big part in the Power rankings. Iona has a brutally tough schedule as they play league games against the teams seeded 2-8. They are on the road at St. Anthony, St Joseph, Holy Trinity and Xaverian with home games with Holy Cross, Chaminade, and Farrell. Their non league game is against Bergen Catholic.
Will Pope be going to St. Rose on scholarship or priority (recruited) walk-on?
Cameron Rice was a very solid player from the early 90s who easily could have went D1 and had a good career at St. Rose. Rice probably could have played D1 football( great athlete). The kid from North Salem just graduated I think his name was Depaoli. St Rose plays very tough hoops. This youngster made a wise choice. Congrats
Another former Iona Prep player( Elmsford resident) who finished off at Trinity Pawling named Dillon Quinn signed w/ BC for football. Iona was great this year, imagine they had this kid opening holes for their great backs. Hes a legit 6’6 and 305 and has a 33 inch waist.Benches 500+
Sorry about repeating Depaolis , I didnt realize it was written above
rileygirl:
did you measure quins waist yourself and spot him when he benches?
?, Yes I did measure his waist and as far as the benching stuff its on Rivals, ESPN , Scout and all of the other notable recruiting sites. Hes the strongest player at his position in the country
Warren Coolidge
Full ride!
Does anyone have any updates on how local players have been faring in AAU? I saw on nyhoops that Bronner and Voelkel did well at the Providence Jamfest
lefty
Dustin Hogue from Lincoln of Yonkers played well.
Conroy Baltimore (Stepinac) and Jabarie Hinds (MV) have also played well.
Sandro Carrissimo (Iona Prep) playing for the Gauchos is doing well.
I found this link about Jabarie Hinds and Conroy Baltimore’s play for the Westchester Hawks at the Providence Jamfest. Apparently, both played very well for the 16U team.

Congratulations to Andre Pope and his family. Hard work equals success. Interesting article on Lance Stepenson. St. Johns is now on the back burner

congradulations to ande pope.
as you must know by now i am a mount st michael follower.the mounts two seniors, william and nigal are going foward.nigal to clartson and wil to rhode island college.both div 3 but as to wil almost a free ride, with financial aid etc.i think coach fraher did a great job in placing his only two seniors.
i was trying to help william and sent out
10 e mails to various coaches about him.8 answered, some no interest, some with interest and SAINT ROSE DID NOT EVEN HAVE THE COURTESY TO RESPOND.THIS SAYS ALOT ABOUT THEIR BASKET PROGRAM.
.
did andre get to play at the end of the year?

Andre is going to play right away at St Rose. If he went prep he would have gone D1.
Just needed to show he was a true PG. He had Quinnipiac, Cent. Conn. State, NJIT, St Francis (NY) among others. He’s a great kid. I heard he’s playing in alot of upcoming events to get better.
Speaking of Iona Prep, is their center, Matt Lyde going to be playing at the next level?
mrvolo, not only are you an alumni but you put your money where your mouth is by sponsoring young men at Mount. When you speak you should be heard.
Williams was a three year varsity player and the best that could be done for him was D3? Note that by NCAA rules for D3 schools, Williams being admitted to RIC had nothing to do with sports. Williams was admitted to RIC because of his academic record. Possibily his financial aid status helps make it affordable, but it’s still not free like a D1 or D2. Off course the D3 coach loves getting Williams, because he’s getting a steal. I’m not taking away anything from Williams accomplishment academically but adding to it, when I say “Fraher had no influence in the admissions process?”.
As was stated on a post that has since mysteriously disappeared that I believe to be true, Clarkson discovered Nigel through AAU. Nigel’s admittance is similar to Williams in that it has nothing to do with Fraher and everything to do with Nigel’s academics. Clarkson is a top rated Engineering school.
I wish Williams and Nigel the best and commend you for sponsoring so many young men at the Mount and in being a tireless advocate of the Mount. Academics first and Mount is an excellent school for academics.
The third forgotten senior on the team is 6.5 and took care of his academics by being an honor roll student. He never got a chance to play. I’m not sure where he is going, but I wish him the best also.
I think you needed to call asst coach Perno at St Rose. Coach Beaury may still be on health leave. You will get a response from Coach Perno. St Rose is an excellent program and it is a fine school. Pope should thrive there.
frodo,
i too noticed the missing posts.what you say about nigal may be true but about william it was fraher who told the RIC coach about wil and he came to the big apple game and i was up from florida and we talked.he said he would like to have him but at that time william and i thought he could go higher.he had 2 D2 schools interested but they were not great academic schools.when all is said and done i feel he made the right choice and if it was not for basketball he would not be going.
i feel wil was as good as any point guard in area except for chaz williams.he gave up alot this year to help peter and the offence may have not been the best.when nigal and hE took over they almost beat iona in second game.i am rambling but coach fraher got him to the next level and i feel i helped.
one last comment, yesterday my wife received a mother’s day call from his mother and also a card from wil and his family, this means alot to us,and you are right, they got a steal at RIC.
frodo,
this is the first time your name pops up.also, thanks for the nice words.
Scanlan and St.Agnes moved up to Class A. 2 divisions of 8 next year. Salesian and B.S stay down. Class B – 4 teams playing each other 3 times. Anyone see the logic in this? I could just picture the Iona vs Scanlan outcome. Scanlan and St.Agnes feel they can attract more talent by moving up. Mount, Iona, Stepinac, Hayes, Fordham Prep, Spellman, Regis and Scanlan. Last year’s breakdown tried to avoid the blowouts. Kids do not get better playing against schools that belong in a different level. Winning by 30-40 is a waste of everyone’s time.
Congradulations Andre Pope!,
I know you will do well at St Rose i wish the best for you. You had a great career at Iona Prep scoring 1000+ pts and being he backbone of your team. You made a Great choice in choosing St. Rose to play at the nxt level. I am behind you a 100 percent and know i will allwayz b here for you. You are great at what you do and i know you will be the brightest star amongets all the starz! I love you! =]
Andre is an absolute god most underated player around a guard that gets everybody involved controls the court and has the ability to score 30+ . His game is under appreciated and no doudt in my mind will break scoring aswell as assist records at st rose
