Two players from the Lower Hudson Valley were drafted into the NFL today, and another agreed to a free agent deal.
Rutgers defensive backs Courtney Greene (New Rochelle) and Jason McCourty (Nanuet) were selected in the final two rounds this evening. Greene was the 245th pick by the Seattle Seahawks. McCourty was picked 203rd by the Tennessee Titans.
Former New Rochelle standout Andre Douglas, a 6-foot-5, 310-pound tackle at Temple, agreed to terms late tonight with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. New Rochelle’s Glen Lee, a Rutgers safety, is awaiting a mini camp invite.
That’s now three, and possibly four, players from the famed 2003 New Rochelle state championship football team in the NFL. Ray Rice of the Baltimore Ravens is obviously the other. Best team ever? Hard to dispute what these guys did in college. I’d be willing to say, and I hope I’m wrong, that I’ll never cover another high school football team in this area with four future professionals on it.
Ray cracked the Top 20 all-time in rushing yards at Rutgers in just three record-breaking seasons.
Greene started all four seasons at safety, set a school record for consecutive starts (51) and led, or was near the top, in tackles every season.
Douglas, who started his career at Rhode Island, transfered to Temple and became their top lineman. He started all 24 games.
Glen Lee never really became a starter at Rutgers but was stuck behind three future pros in Ron Girault (Spring Valley), Greene and McCourty. Jason’s twin brother, Devin, red-shirted and will return to Rutgers next season. He, too, could be a pro.
I spoke to Greene and McCourty tonight. Greene was obviously a little ticked considering he was invited to the combine, fared well there and was projected to be a fourth- to fifth-round pick. Slipping to the final 12 of the draft was unnerving.
McCourty, meanwhile, was ecstatic considering he convinced himself he wasn’t going to be drafted at all. Going in the sixth round to a team that won 13 games makes it even better. He wasn’t celebrating when I spoke to him about a half-hour ago.
“I’m not celebrating anything until I make the team,” he said. McCourty leaves for mini camp on Thursday, as does Greene.

Not to mention Myke Savage has a chance to be drafted next year after a medical redshirt this year, and mcdermott still might wind up on an nfl roster.
From what I read, Mccourty ran a blazing 40 and obviously that halped.Kevin, you are correct in your evaluation of the NewRo team of ‘03/ Im sure that NewRo would have won the following year had Ray not gotten hurt, however, CBA did win and it just shows you how great a player PAulus was. Williams has played some at Cuse and Lobdell a little as well. The fact is that NewRo put out great college players from that team and some pros, had PAulus went and played football I think he would have been an early pick this year or next had he redshirted.
Riley.. you are correct in what you heard about Mccourty. The owner of my gym is involved in his training and was at the Rutgers proday. He said he turned heads with that speed and they felt it was the icing on the cake in terms of him getting a shot.
Congratulations to our outstanding guys froml the Lower Hudson Valley in getting drafted. Best of luck to all and Courtney most of all.
Proud day for New Ro.
A very good source told me that Paulus is going to Syracuse next year. This makes sense, since his two HS WR’s are now both on the team (Michael Williams missed a year with academic/personal issues), his parents and family still live in the area, and the Orangemen are running Rob Spence’s (former section 1 player and coach) version of the Spread Offense. That move, along with moving former Roosevelt standout Doug Hogue from 3rd team TB to 1st team OLB shows that the “Marrone Era” has arrived in Central NY!!!
Are you are you ready? was ur very good source espn because this news has been around for a week or so you didnt uncover any great information.
I remember playing pop warner football with the McCourty twins. Congrats
Are you Ready, Syracuse.com has reported that Paulus to Cuse is a done deal. Bruce Williams has graduated and Lobdell is returning. Lobdell has not come close to meeting his potential. This is a kid who has a priority recruit for Miami. Hopefully with Paulus and Williams coming back, Lobdell and Cuse will start winning some games.
John Jay’s Sheeran was also moved to LB but has transferred. Does anyone know where hes gonna end up?
If Marrone can keep the NY kids in state and get some of NJs best, Cuse has a shot. One thing Marrone/Cuse has going for it is that Cincys coach ( who is great) will be gone soon, Louis. is a wreck and WVUs Stewart is a disaster as well.
I heard Sheeran is gonna transfer to one of the east coast 1AA’s to play right away, UNH, Maine, UMass, Villanova, Delaware, etc…
Sheeran probably wants to play receiver? Whats he gonna have 2 years left? Its probably been tough for him the past few years as a receiver at Cuse, their quarterback play has been a mess. There’s probably many reasons for this but I would have loved to see him do well. Those schools mentioned are loaded with 5 year talent and many kids like Sheeran who wanna get a fresh start at a at a lower level.
Is McDermott considering a Paulus-like move? There’s gotta be some schools that would want him (Rutgers, BC, Cuse, etc.).
Andre Douglas just signed a rookie free agent deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Congrats to McCourty,
A REAL stand up Guy the most respectful YOUNG MAN I ever met.BACK IN MY KID’S(SAGZ) GREEN Knights DAYS HE GOT TO PLAY WITH HIM IN GABARGE TIME IN A PLAY OFF GAME BACK IN 2005 WHEN MY KID GOT BROUHT UP TO VARSITY AS A FRESHMAN CAPT.
GOOD LUCK
p.s I THOUGHT McCourty WAS FOM Nyack
The football in this area is rising at a fast pace. The better it gets the more exposure for players worthy of moving on. Scouts are gonna start trading them Texas plane tickets for ones to New York!!!
I know ESPN Rise isnt the best source but they have Dobbs Ferry’s Devonte Brailsford as the top FB In NY. He had a stellar freshman and sophmore year and faced injuries last year. At full health this year he could be scary. 6’1 220 body is great size. http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/recruiting/tracker/player?recruitId=83139&season=2010&action=upsell&appRedirect=http%3a%2f%2finsider.espn.go.com%2fncf%2frecruiting%2ftracker%2fplayer%3frecruitId%3d83139%26season%3d2010
Congrats to McCourty being drafted
A Real Stand Up Kid ,Very respectable well spoken young man.Had the chance of meeting him back in my kids Green Knight Days where he had the chance of playing with him during garbage time in a 2005 playoff game @ rugters
When are you going to start talking about next years football teams?(besides schedule problems)
Spring Youth Football Saturday at Memorial Field 11am and 1pm
Big Congrats and We are not surprise that Greene is a pro. He was great as a youth and up. Congrat McCourty , he was also fantastic as a youth.
Look for Hilights from Mv Spring Youth Football this Saturday. at www dot mvrazorbacks dot com
We have some very special youngsters coming up. Games will Saturday at 11am and 1pm at Memorial Field, Mount Vernon.
My has 25 kids who never played football until 4 weeks ago. They are learning everyday.
I have seen the plans for Memorial Field. All I can say is , the State Chamapionship will want to be played there. WOW
Brailsford can’t be considered the top FB in Section 1 let alone NY unless he goes to the Section 1 Combine and proves he has better numbers than everyone else. His “on the field” numbers are tainted because of the level he plays at. Not his fault, his school size is his school’s size, but unless he shows on a “level” playing field that he can stack up, you have to wonder. As far as McDermott is concerned, I’m hearing that he knows he’s not gonna get drafted in the NBA, but he might try and go the NBA “D” league route, and for that he needs an agent to promote him to the NBA teams. If he hires an agent for basketball, he might not be allowed to play college football. Or, he might try and get a contract with a European club. He’s gonna decide sometime before the NBA draft.
Coach Darlos, is the “new” memorial field gonna be field turf? I heard yesterday someone say it was gonna be a grass field. That would be a huge mistake. The facility would be amazing, and the field itself would suck, because you know the Mt. Vernon Park & Rec won’t maintain it, like they didn’t maintain the old field. What a shame it was to watch the sectional championship games being played in a dust bowl or mud bowl!
Brailsford has been to combines and visited schools.
Field Turf requires maintenance as well.
http://www.athleticturf.net/athleticturf/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=162975
LOL,
Can you disclose what schools he’s visited?
UoD…no one said that field turf doesn’t need maintenance (although the article you cited is almost 4 years old), what was said was that the Mt. Vernon Park & Rec did not maintain the old grass field, so why are we to believe they would maintain a “new” grass field. And, it is a proven fact that field turf needs much less maintenance than a grass field, and in this case the less maintenance possible the better.
Anyone know where Markell Rice is headed to?
Kevin Adams from Nyack who was also great as a youth, will graduate from St. Joes this june and play RB at pitt next year, trying to replace LeSean McCoy… I use to love watching him and the McCourty twins play for Nyacks pop warner
Adams is expected to get a lot of run next year. They moved Collier to FB in expecting Adams to contribute. Collier was a highly touted NY player coming out
I heard the other day both Rice and Walker are going to AIC in Springfield Mass.
Does anyone know how Nigel Morris is doing?? I know he went to Toledo but has he done anything in the NFL?
I heard Nigel Morris, did not come back to school last year , I heard his body couldnt take the pounding.
Nigel had several injuries while at Toledo. After his red shirt freshman year he was ranked as one of the best DB’s in his class. From what I understand he did not play very much his senior year because of injuries.
I also heard that he petitioned for an additional year of eligibility because of the injuries but it was not granted.
It is my understanding that he went back to finish his degree at Toledo.
Greene will make it in the pros!
How is Terry Baltimore doing at UConn? Darius Butler is gone, will Terry see some action?
Nigel did graduate from Toledo!
Terry graduated and elected not to return to UConn.
