Journal News all-star teams

April
19

The Journal News all-star teams were released today for Westchester/Putnam and Rockland counties.

Sherrod Wright of Mount Vernon was an easy choice for the Westchester/Putnam player of the year. Click here to see the rest of the first team, second team and honorable mention list.

Matt Grossbard of Pearl River was selected the player of the year in Rockland County. Here’s the story, and who the coaches voted to the first and second teams, and honorable mention lists.

Take a look through these and give me your thoughts. I don’t think there’s much disputing Wright as the POY for Westchester. Nor do I believe anybody had quite as good of a year as Grossbard in Rockland. The first and second teams, though, are certainly debatable, which is a sign that this was yet another very good season in high school basketball.

Grossbard has a great rep. I hope his future is bright.

Congrats to all the winners. I know this isnt the place to ask, but I dont know of any other. Where is Dan Sheeran transferring to? Obviously Im a little behind the times but I read that hes left Cuse. If anyone has info please let me know.

  2. bball

how does that kid from albertus not make honorable mentioned. Donahue filled in for lopez beautifully.

  3. Rockland Fan

Grossbard is the biggest phony in Section 1. Sure he can play and I am not disputing him as Rocklands best player, but I would have rather seen it go to someone who is not quite as full of himself as this kid. I took my son to the Albertus-PR game at Albertus this year when Grossbard had a tough night and he started throwing elbows because he wasn’t getting his points. I told my son to never act like that on a basketball court or I would pull him out of the game myself. I was actually embarrassed for the kid. Oh well, congradulations on the award kid. Good luck on the next level and try and keep the ‘tude in check because a college coach won’t put up with it. Just some friendly advice.

  4. gogaels

i thought the asst. coach from iona prep was getting coach of the year, not the head coach!!!

  5. section 1 fan

I do not understand how grossbard became player of the year as well. He does not play against the best competition and he is not that much of an exceptional player if his team record wasnt amongst the best in their class. I do not think he proved himself enough as well in the playoffs.

Also i do not understand why most of the players that made second team are mainly in another class other than AA when I have seen them struggle against AA teams in scrimages and season games

  6. better side of the bridge

grossbard is a punk and a cheap shot artist. i will admit he is talented but his antics on the court are childish and immature. his whole game is goin to the basket and throwing himself on the floor like a rag doll and hoping he gets the call, and on top of that he pisses and moans the entire game and is an overall baby and a whiner. him getting player of the year makes for a sad year for rockland basketball. irvington held him to 16 points in 2 games so he must not be that special

  7. better side of the bridge

completely agree rockland fan, glad im not the only one who notices the elbows

  8. Franco's 624 CUTS

Congratulations to Grossbard ! Lets Give CREDIT Where Credits is DUE!!!!!!! Great Job Kid I always knew you would make it to the Next Level!Great Job,GOOD LUCK!!!!!

and for all you other TOOLS!!!! Where do you get Off thrashing a Kid Rockland Fan! your comments on Matt ! I’m ASHAMMED to say make you sound like a kid!!!AND SECTION 1 FAN are you sure you not a disgruntle baller who wished you got the award your self and by the way better side of the bridge!ROCKLAND is the better side of the bridge!!!!all you have to do is take a look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself who the real PUNK IS!!!!!!!!
P.S you all need to relax

  9. Rileygirl

Francocuts is back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Grossbard has been getting a lot of light in the metro area for a while. I did not see most of the Rockland teams play so the award could have been a lifetime honor type a thing. Rocklandfan, the PR coaches have a great handle on their kids. If Matt had gotten out of control or was not honoring the game/opponent, Im sure it would have been handled.Unlike certain teams starters shootin 3’s in the 4th quarter of a 50 point lead.( I has to stir the pot)
Im always impressed on how tough the PR kids play. If you look at the team they are not talented at all, yet they seem to make the County Center on a regular basis. ( They then get waxed)

  10. Hoops fan

Hard to argue with Kevin’s choices. I might’ve thought Conroy Baltimore deserved a spot on the 2nd team, but he has two more years to work on that. Too bad these lists didn’t come out a month ago – it seems like the excitement is gone so long after the season ends.

  11. Dave Grossbard

Let me preface this by saying this is not directed at any high school player or high school aged fan. I appreciate your enthusiasm. However there have been several bloggers who by the tone of their writing I can assume are adults, who have come on here under an assumed name for the last year and trashed an 18 year old kid. I have a pretty good idea who you all are and its truly sad. You sit up there in the stands and carry on about a kid who really has been taught by some pretty good coaches (Houstons, Hurley, Rudy King (Bishop Loughlin etc…)that there is only one way to play and that is all out.

Rockald Fan – You say you took your son to a game and that were embarrased at what you saw. All I can tell you is that Matt has played in over 100 Varsity basketball games including scrimmages and has never once received a technical foul (Flagrant or unsportsmanlike). There is a big differnce between playing hard and playing physical. It (physical play) goes both ways which is indicitive of him taking more free throws than any other player in the county for the last two years. That is not by accident, and not by refs giving him calls that so many of you think happens. Beleive me there are no refs in Rockland County fixing high school games. You also stated that you told your son that you would pull him off the court if he played in a certain way. You seem to be trying to set a good example for your son but I wonder if he is aware that you are on a high school basketball blog trashing an eightteen year old kid. Seems kind of cotradictory to me. As far as his attitude and what his college coach thinks of him all I can tell you is that the schools that were recruiting him all had attitude and work ethic as his two top assets (This includes Tom Konchalski/HSBI). So thanks for all your advice but I think he will keep using the same formula that people in the know have come to appreciate.

Finally, as a parent we all strive to help our children acieve his or her goals. Sports is so competitive and an athlete must make many sacrifices to achieve their goals. For my son his goal was to keep playing basketball after high school and he will be fortunate enough to do that. However, this did not just happen. It took alot of sacrifice on his part and as a parent I am proud that he set a goal and strove to attain it. So to all you moms and dads who sit in the stands and have so much advice heres a little back. If you want your child to become a better player put the time with him or her in the gym or the park and maybe a little less time on these blogs trashing kids. If they are so inclined, to pick up a ball outside of the basketball season and to work on their skills. There are no shortcuts in sports. So good luck to all the student-athletes in their quest to be the best that they can be.

PS YOU GOT TO LOVE IT! SEE WHAT I MEAN GREAT KID/AND FAMILY

  13. HRs

    Dave:

That was an excellent post. I applaud you. I was fortunate enough to watch Matt play and he got the most out of his god given talent. I wish him the best. Congratulations on a job well done!

  14. peekfatdaddy

The bigger question is how could Mike Quick not even pick Daquan Brickhouse as even an Honorable Mention all Tri State on the MSG High School Weekly, when Chazz Williams is on the first team. Ralph Watts and I think a couple of Iona Prep kids made Honorable Mention. I would like to know how he picked this team. I know for a fact that he has seen Daquan play at least 5 times in the last 3 years.

  15. Hoops

    Dave,

It’s probly cuz Matt was too busy smacking the refs on the butt every chance he got and sucking up to them the entire game. I have never seen a kid get so many calls in a high school game than Matt. He wasn’t Michael Jordan. My personal favorite Matt moments are when he gets real close to his defender and and grabs there jersey and pulls them down on top of him so it makes it look like a foul. Saw him do it a few times and never was he called for an offense foul. I also like when he walks up to kids on the opposing team after a whistle and rips the ball out of their hands. Where I come from we call that bush league.

Matt Grossbard – a legend in his own mind

Sorry. Wont respond to you unless you put your name up.

Its amazing to see the ignorant posts! That Do you guys know anything about Hoops? elbowing pulling smacking boxing out ,fouling acting like you got fouled . getting under your opponent skin

Its all part of the Game

P.s. don’t be Jealous , I know you wish you were him

  19. peekfatdaddy

HRs, yeah I saw that list on NYHoops, thanks. I don’t know but Mike Quick is going downhill. He used to be Tevin Baskin’s biggest fan and he only made the Honorable Mention list. I’m not sweating the list because I know how good Daquan is and almost carried Peekskill to a State Championship, but I just wanted to point it out, in case others hadn’t seen it.

  20. HRs

    Peek who is recruiting Daquan?

  21. intelligent fan

grossbard doesnt get techs cuz the refs r on his nuts

  22. bball guy

hah franco you really crack me up. its holarious how you pretend to be personal friends with every athlete from rockland to make yourself feel important on these blogs. go find a hobby man you are PATHETIC

  23. 914

arrite dave theres a difference between physical play and throwing an elbow at a guys throat and then getting on the bus and going home

  24. Franco's 624 CUTS

    bball guy

Talk about being PATHETIC you tool I do Know the family. They are PESONAL friends Back in my kids AAU DAYS we Represented Rockland He had the Honor of Playing With MATT on the Rockets For the National down in Memphis I only POST FOR KIDS THAT I KNOW !!!!!!!!

PS talking about CRACK HEADS I mean crack ups

  25. Hoops fan

    peekfatdaddy,
Its possible Quick should’ve given Brickhouse more love on his all-star teams, but not at the expense of Chazz Williams. Both Chazz and Brickhouse are great players, but there’s no way I’d pick Brickhouse over Chazz at this point. Brickhouse has another year to improve/grow/etc. I don’t know anyone who would take Brickhouse over Chazz outside of Peekskill.

    HRs,
You’re absolutely right that Mike Quick has been all over the place this year in his rankings. I think he does a lot of good for local kids and he’s personally a nice guy – I just don’t think he’s really an expert on HS basketball. He’s a television guy who is a fan. Tom Konchalski he is not.

    Dave Grossbard,
Very classy comment. The morons who come on this blog and criticize any 18 kid shouldn’t even get a response in my opinion, but you couldn’t have put things better and didn’t express any anger which would’ve been very understandable. Your son is an excellent player, I wish him the best wherever he ends up. Your son is also an example of a kid who wasn’t blessed with incredible size or athleticism that has made himself into a very solid player through I’m sure an awful lot of hard work.

  26. westchester baller

please stop all this hating on Matt. ive seen him play and he plays hard and tough, he is also a very nice and chill kid so relax with the bashing you jealous haters.

well deserved grossbard and good luck

  27. Franco's 624-cuts

matt and my son played basketball together for five years in AAU….......... BBALL GUY and i am close with the family… learn your facts next time

  28. Franco's 624-cuts

my son played basketbbal with him for 5 years in AAu….. BBALL kid so you have no idea what your talking me we and the grossbards have a good realtionshop

    hes a beast stop hatinnngg

  29. the rock

I wouldn’t have to hate on the kid if he wasn’t the dirtiest and most hated players in Sec1. I’m not knocking the kid for his basketball skills because he is a solid player, I am knocking his attitude when he isn’t getting his points and gets frustrated. I saw him play Irvington and Albertus when he couldn’t hit a shot. On one play against Albertus he grabbed the kids jersey and pulled him down drawing a foul on the defender..dirty and bush league..On another play he grabbed Ryan Sullivans shorts and literally pulled them down to get open..what?..I actually find it easy to root against the kid.

  30. Westchester fan

I have to say that I love the sophomore class going to be upcoming juniors. I have seen some of them play in aau once and I feel like they would be at least the 1st or 2nd best on their teams next year. Well I only know two people from rockland and what I have seen from aau regionals, ashula odongo and martinez. Ashula had a monster dunk against the westchester hawks who I have become a fan of. So now I will start with my westchester buddies by stating jabarie hinds, adam honig, p.j, conroy, and kenny bradshaw. I watch alot of westchester this season and I see these kids as upcoming stars next year. All of these players are at least honorable mention this year from what I have seen.

I hope you’re a KID cause if not You Got Some Serious ISSUES! KID BASHING totally unacceptable

    Need to grow up

  33. Outside Perspective

I can’t believe all the hatred and jealousy that goes on from section 1 fans – basketball and even worse with football.

Fans bad-mouthing teen-aged kids like they are criminals! What a disgrace and you should be ashamed of yourselves.

From the way people are describing grossbard – 20 years ago he would have been a basketball fan’s favorite! They would’ve loved Grossbard in the catholic league!

To the people bad-mouthing grossbard, either you never played the game before or you did and were #15 on the roster.

Good luck to Matt in college – he will do well.

  34. Bronx tale

    bball guy,
Talk about PATHETIC….. Please, Please go back to school. There are 10 misspelled words in your 2-sentence blog. Did you ever get an education? Get off the blog and get one.

    Nygel Satterfield, Sr., Clarkstown South;
    Sean Carter, Sr., Nanuet;
    Flynn McFadden, Sr., Albertus

Great Job Guys Good luck continued success at the NEXT LEVEL!!

  36. Rockland hoops

So do u guys think there are any kids snubbed this year?

  37. C'mon Now

Mike Quick is clueless and always has been. Also, he shows favoritism to those teams that buy New Balance sneakers, who just so happens to sponsor his’ show!!! Sell Out!!! Thats all he is

  38. peekfatdaddy

Hoops Fan, I’m not saying to take anything away from Chaz Williams, but he and Daquan are closer in talent than Chaz being first team and Daquan not even making it. Chaz is a great player and deserves it, I was just trying to compare the idiocy of the lists. I probably just made it sound the wrong way.

HRs, I’m not really sure who is recruiting Daquan. I know for sure that LaSalle was at one of the regional games and I have heard Providence and George Mason mentioned, but I’m not positive.

  39. Hoops fan

    Westchester fan,
Who does the Odongo kid play for? I haven’t heard his name before.

    Peekfatdaddy,
I think Brickhouse is a great player. And more important than being recognized by Mike Quick is being recognized by college coaches you mentioned at LaSalle, Providence and George Mason.

  40. pokman

Peekfatdaddy, What about Dayvon Whitaker? Poughkeepsie was on the MSG Bubble a lot this year. This kid is the real deal.

  41. pokman

How are Brickhouse’s grades? I do not mean this negatively but that will be the deciding factor in a kid at his size. NCAA D1 qualifying is very difficult these days.

  42. HRs

Peekfat… Thanks for the response. Personally I do not think Brickhouse is a Big East player. The other two schools are more suited for his style and size. But then again, Brickhouse as done more than mostwould think thus far, so I am rooting for him!

Pokman… Whitaker..different school Peekfat is a Peekskill fan :) But Whitaker(from what I hear) is being heavily recruited by Marist and COC.

  43. so style

there’s a reason everyone hates on grossbard and not on sherrod or any of the other players on these lists. the people who are defending him should realize that

  44. trigga

haha here comes franco again. i bet u sit down every night and have dinner with these kids too right? i hope u feel important by pretending to know these kids, but to everyone else your a joke

  45. Westchester fan

    He plays for suffern

  46. Franco's 624-cuts

    Yo TRIGGA
    I know Them

From back in my kids Ballers days
If you guys Think certain kids are Aggressive or dirty players! My kid,SAGZ makes them all look like Saints !! people don’t realize how physical Basketball really is and how coaches want and expect them to play PHISCAL even dirty at times!!!!!!!! And if any TRU BALLER who has played the GAME and had success in the GAME tells you that they Don’t play a little dirty at times then i say
    IF I’m lying I’m Flying and Popeye’s a PUNK!!!!
    P.S.Get you fact str8

  47. Spoon Man

    HRs,

    what is COC?

  48. HRs

Spoon.. College of Charleston. I think he would be a perfect fit there. Solid coach and and up tempo style

  49. Spoon Man

    HRs,

Thanks, I assumed it was Charleston. If that’s true, that’s great news because that’s a program very much on the rise

  50. info:

like brickhouse alot but qualifying will be the issue for next year. also, i don’t think bobby cremins does to much recruiting in the new york area.

  51. Hoops fan

    info:
Thats ironic what you say about Bobby Cremmins not recruiting much in the NY area. I can remember a time he raided New York for Kenny Anderson, Bruce Dalrymple, Stephon Marbury, John Salley, Kevin Morris, etc, etc. He also recruited NY well in his first coaching job at Appalachian State. Interesting thing about Cremmins is he was out of coaching entirely for 7-8 years before going to Charleston – I never hear of layoffs that long.

  52. Rileygirl

The person that said Bobby Cremins doesnt recruit the MEtro area that much must be younger than 20. Not trying to dog the writer but like you said “hoops fan” Cremins made a living recruiting NY kids.
Mike Quick is in a tough spot. Hes like Devaney in that he tries to be objective and cover all areas but the fact is that someone’s always gonna be upset in terms of coverage. The man has about 20 minutes a week to cover the Metro area and because of this there are teams that will not get the light deserved.
I know some of the posters were up in Cuse to watch CBA play NewRo a few years back. They saw the brilliance of Paulus. I hope this kid goes to Cuse because he is a baller. He should have went to play QB from the jump. Best high school QB Ive ever seen

  53. HRs

Reilly 100% agree on both of your main points. Cremins still is recruiting NY. There is a kid from Brooklyn on the team now. Whitaker fits very well into their system. That is why Cremins is after him.

With Paulus, I am still shocked he chose hoops over foots..but the way sports works, he has another shot to step on the football field.

  54. info:

    riley girl / hoops fan:
i am way OVER 20. Bobby Cremmins BACK THEN did recruit new york kids – NOT NOW. just look at his roster – 1 kid from brooklyn thats it. not going to get in to specifics but i have pretty good resources that have said the same about him not gettting heavily involved with new york kids. the fact is that now is a different time then it was when when he was at g-tech. aau has to many shady people with their hand out for what they consider “their” player – alot of corruption with basketball nowadays – it’s a shame!

  55. Class C Fan

    Kevin,

Any comment on the horrible all-state selections?

  56. boss

    1. Can anyone post Mike Quick’s first, second and honorable mention list?

    2. Chaz is a lot better than Brickhouse.

    3. Who won the regionals for the 16u ?

  57. coach

I help coach Dayvon Whitaker and yes marist and coc is lokking at him but there are other division one schools looking at him that we can not diclose right now.
