Sherrod to sign with George Mason

April
17

I spoke an hour ago at Mount Vernon with basketball star Sherrod Wright, who confirmed that he will sign on Monday with George Mason University.

The 6-foot-4 guard had narrowed his choices to George Mason, Kansas State and Central Florida, and also strongly considered Oklahoma State and Providence. But he visited George Mason a few weeks back and felt the powerhouse mid-major was the best fit for him.

Sherrod had a very wise outlook on the recruiting process. Schools like Oklahoma State and Providence came after him hard in the last few weeks, and are obviously the more lucrative choices.

“But I didn’t want to be somebody’s second option,” he said. “A lot of schools were coming after me because they knew I was still out there and they lost out on their first choice. That’s not a good situation to be in.”

Wright said George Mason has been after him since last summer and he valued the rapport he’d built with the players and coaches during the process.

As you know, Wright started on four straight Section 1 Class AA championship teams at Mount Vernon and was named Mr. Basketball as a senior. He averaged 23.2 points per game this season, routinely putting the Knights on his back in the third and fourth quarter of big games.

Sherrod will officially sign of his National Letter of Intent at a ceremony on Monday at the high school.

(NOTE: I cited a George Mason blog in my article that considered Wright the “highest rated recruit ever to sign with George Mason.” Here’s a link to the blog, which will also be a good place to follow Sherrod through college.)

    kevin,

just FYI.yesterday they honored bro.john bantz at the mount by making him a legand.there are about 15,artie donavan, richie tricario, howie smith, etc.,how i missed i will never know.bro. john started the SAMS program which sponsors mount students.we have helped 4 for 4 years.times this by 60 and you get the impact.all this plus the mount is still going on.maybe when things are slow you could write an acknowlegement.i still think you will be doing something big in sports down the road.

This is great news, I have been watching Sherrod since his freshman year and have been eager to find out where he’d be attending college. What really sticks out in my mind is when he played so well as a freshman in MV’s win over D. Caracter and St. Patrick’s at St. John’s University. It was then that I realized he was going to make some coach very happy. I think he made a great decision and he will do very well there. I would have loved to see him play for Fordham because I feel he would have been a program changer there but I can’t complain. Mr. Volo, it’s always nice to hear your stories about the Mount but this post is about Sherrod and your stealing his thunder.

    kEVIN,

This is a great decision by Sherrod – really mature and filled with foresight. I’ll be rooting for him. I think he can be a star in the CAA – a conference that is nothing to shake a stick at in the first place. Ask Eric Maynor – his days @ VCU will lead him to being a first round draft pick in the NBA. Congrats, Sherrod!!

I read on here a while back Kevin saying, if your not going to be a star to look at schools your getting recruited by and go to a school a level below it, I think this was a great philosophy and some of the more successful players from the area have done well. This is a great choice by Sherrod to pass up on the Big 12, and Big East and choose the best fit for him and his future. Look at guys like Tony Taylor, Melquan Bolding, Chris Lowe, even Geoff McDermmot and Donny McGrath. And in football Ray Rice and the New Ro crew did the same. All could have gone to big schools but went somewhere a little below got great educations and have had great success.

Sherrod was so underrated by scouts. Highly undrecruited. He will do BIG BIG things at GMason.. Starting at Vernon for four years is no joke. Good luck
