Breakdown: Class A state championship

March
21

The most anticipated game of the year is only a day away.

Peekskill and Jamesville-Dewitt both snuck by in today’s Class A semifinals; Peekskill beat East Hampton 55-48 and J-D beat Batavia 40-32. Neither team looked all that sharp, although it doesn’t make a difference. All that matters is what happens at 1 p.m. tomorrow, and I can guarantee both teams will raise their play.

Here’s how I see the game shaking out:

Class A state championship
Peekskill (23-1) vs. Jamesville-Dewitt (25-1)
When:
Sunday, at 1 p.m.
Where: Glens Falls Civic Center
Watch it live: lohud.com/vcsports1
Who is Jamesville-Dewitt: The school is in the town of Dewitt, which is just East of Syracuse. The Red Rams won last year’s state and Federation titles, beating Peekskill in the state semifinals. J-D has won three state titles in history, including 2004 when it beat Taj Finger’s Fox Lane squad.
Jamesville-Dewitt starting five: Brandon Triche (6-4), Sr., PG; Dajuan Coleman (6-8), Fr., C; Alshawn Hymes (6-2), Sr., F; Lamar Kearse (6-0), Jr., G; Steve Thompson (6-3), Sr., F.
What to know about J-D:
Offense
— Everything starts with Triche, the Syracuse-bound star. His ability get in the paint and create through traffic is stunning to watch. There aren’t many players in the state who posses his ability to finish or draw contact, and he’s at his best when he’s out in the open floor. Coleman is big but raw with his footwork. Hymes is the player who really hurt Peekskill in last year’s semifinal, and you can see the numbers he’s capable of putting up.
Defense — With Coleman manning the middle, there Red Rams will likely vary between zones and force the Red Devils to beat them from the outside. I wouldn’t be shocked if they even put a box-and-one on, with Lamar Kearse assigned to Daquan Brickhouse. As poorly as they played against Batavia, the defense disrupted ball movement and forced Batavia to settle for everything out on the perimeter.
Who will win: Jamesville-Dewitt. I sat and watched Jamesville struggled today against a Batavia team that scored only three second-quarter points and went what seemed like forever without scoring in the fourth. There’s no way that happens again. J-D is widely regarded as the top team in the state, regardless of class. I might not totally buy that, but they’re in the conversation and, right now, Peekskill isn’t. The Red Devils have struggled to put points on the board since their 91-point barrage against Pearl River and nobody seems to know why. A question like that can’t be answered overnight, and not against a team as talented as J-D.
Prediction: Jamesville-Dewitt 57, Peekskill 50

For more information on Jamesville-Dewitt:

Syracuse.com has game-by-game results from the entire season.

The site also has a roster, with individual stats if you click on each player.

Here’s a story about Brandon Triche being selected for the Jordan Regional Game (as well as Sherrod Wright of Mount Vernon). Triche will likely be named Mr. Basketball for the state this weekend.

An article in the Post-Standard about J-D playing in Glens Falls this weekend.

Here’s another on J-D’s win over Scotia-Glenville in the regional final.

Peekskill will beat Jamesville-Dewitt 63-60 and thus set up the most anticipated game of the year- Iona Prep- Peekskill in the Federation.

Good luck to Peekskill in the NYPSHAA Championship.

  2. iona

to pick against peekskill at this point in the season is blasphemous! didn’t you see the peekskill/jamesville-dewitt game played last season at the county center during the slam dunk?

haven’t you learned yet, that in the biggest of big games, brickhouse will not be denied?

i like peekskill in a close game.

btw…the video feed from glen falls this morning was excellent. was it it just better lighting and better camera positioning ? whatever the reason , it was much better than the video feeds from the area high schools this season.

  3. jmoose

NFA beats Uniondale 58-51 to advance. NFA v Niagra Falls tomorrow @ 2:45 for AA championship.

    GO GOLDBACKS!!

  4. boss

Lance should be played of the year- set the NY state all time scoring record, played a national schedule, McDonalds All-American, and just won the city title for the 4th year in a row, something no other player in NYC has EVER done.

  5. Mike Hoops

    Kev,

You should write about our adopted team, NEWBURGH!!

We want to watch and hear about them. Heck Newburgh is the FEEL good story of the year!!

Keep us up to date with them, I feel like I am cheating lookin at other blogs!

  6. peekfatdaddy

Kev, I hope you are using reverse psychology and the Devaney curse. I think Peekskill can win this one. Hopefully we will be ready tomorrow.

  7. Coach Larry

I would like to ask Peekskill fan something, why are you good enough to get to Glenn Falls but your seniors rececive no free ride to college.I’m in Glenn Falls right now an I was told by a college scout that colleges don’t respect your program,I was told to look at your titles over the past few years and only 1 member went D1 and he sat on season before being red shirtede. I’m waiting on your reply if this comment doesn’t get erase by the writer.

  8. fyi

does anyone know where long island lutheran fits in to all of this? are they still in or out?

  9. Coach Larry

Give me a breakdown on Peekskill kids that are seniors and i will give you the breakdown on Mt.Vernon, Boy’s and Girls, Rice, Lincoln,Iona prep or any top programs that all there seniors at going D1 or D2 colleges, stop being cheerleaders Peekskill fans give me your seniors except your tranfer from Lakeland because he doesn’t count.

  10. jmoose

    Coach Larry,

    Are you an idiot?

  11. boss

got a point…those schools are getting kids to college which is more important than winning state championships or anything else

  12. Coach Larry

Why would you call me a idiot? Mr. or Ms. Moose. I guess you have to say things like that because you can’t give me answers so I guess you might be looking into the mirror. Keep cheering while your guys go nowhere. If you read the artice for this comment Jameville-Dewitt is in a differant league than your school, you cheered last year for your star player and he couldn’t get off the bench so he red shirted and SU is getting the guard from Jameville-Dewitt next year so stop cheering and look at the facts, you guys go nowhere after playing for your school so who’s the idiot? State titles don’t mean a thing if your kids don’t get to college.

  13. Coach Larry

I know a couple people up there and have venture into the canteen where you guys have a great gym up there with a good coach name Pj, but its sad you guys go up to glenn falls the past few years and your seniors get a medal and kick to the corner after its over. I see how winning is every thing up there, you have a kid who tranfers from one high school in the next town to your school just to win a championship. Do the kids really live in Peekskill because no one seems to see him around town, in doing this you take a kids spot who lives in Peekskill, do you guys pay school taxes up there because you’re paying for him too, but I guess the only thing matters is winning baby! I heard you guys have 6:00AM practice but only six guys showed up and the kid that didn’t come was the kid that live in the next town who couldn’t practice but he played all game an I didn’t see any signs of injuries. How much it cost for kids family to come up to glenn falls for the weekend? I would have played the kids who came to practice, win or lose! Its about coaches getting kids to college that’s what its all about down here.

  14. Greatness

Does it really matter if the kids go to a D1 school? Lots of players have successful high school careers and still play at smaller schools. What size school they choose to go to or can only go to shouldn’t be important.

  15. Devilsblivet

    Dear Coach Larry,
The transfer (You say tranfer, I say transfer.) you are talking about is a product of Peekskill. His Parents are a product of Peekskill, His Grandparents are a product of Peekskill. Case close.
Elton Brand, Hilton Armstrong, Brent Dabbs, Todd Scott and how about Joe Brickhouse, Daquan’s Grandfather from the late 60’s. Case close.
How how about a lesson in English literature and composition. 1) You asked a question in your first blog, was that addressed to Peekskill fan or where you addressing that to all the Peekskill Fan’s, in that case you forgot the (’s) after the fan. 2) Several times you forgot to skip a space after you used comma’s (,)’s, twice in your first blog, once in your second blog and you should also skip a space after a period too, (.) in case you don’t know what it is. 3) I would love to anwser another one of your questions but I can’t find the definition of shirtede? Please define “shirtede” for me.
A college scout (Plural, as in 1) was in Glenn Falls scouting what? Is there a basketball tournament taking place there too. How could he see Peekskill play from there? Where is Glenn Falls? Alaska? Hawaii? Tombouctou? I give up, where? Please send me a post card from there, I would love to see it when I return from the New York State basketball championship in Glens Falls, New York.
Oh! By the way, there was a scout from LaSalle at the Peekskill / Cornwall game last friday checking Daquan Brickhouse out and liked what he saw, also he was amazed by the play of Kenny Bradshaw. Don’t you read all of Kevin Devaney Jr’s articles.
There’s more mistakes but I’m tired of incompetent people like you who think they know the Peekskill basketball program when in reality I doubt you even know basketball in general.
As in deleting any of your blog’s, I doubt they would do something like that if anything they would duplicate them and get a good laugh at them.
Anxiously awaiting your reply; The Devilsblivet.

  16. Devilsblivet

    Hey Coach Larry,

I forgot another Peekskill Basketball Alumnus, Three term Governor George Pataki, Oh! and the first Black Mayor of a city in New York State, Richard Jackson was a Peekskill basketball player. He later went on to become the first black Commissioner of Motor Vehicles in New York State.
I’m sure a lot of great talented and educated people came out of many successful orginize sporting programs though out the whole tri-state area so instead of knocking these fine young athlete’s around, lets give them the support they will need to be the leaders of tomorrow because lord knows the future doesn’t look to good at the current time.

  17. yea yea yea

Peekskill has produced a numbed 1 draft pick and a national player of the year at Duke, Im sure Coach K has tons of respect for Peekskill as does Jim Calhoun who was helped out an awful lot by Hilton Armstrong.
And Mookie was hurt he had hip surgery could be a reason why he didnt play.

  18. RedDevils21

    Coach Larry,

Its hate like this that only makes our students that much stronger. We prepare them in our schools so that they don’t turn out to be a moron like you. As for going D1.. Check into the kids who even though they might not have played ball at their respective schools received a diploma. No one cares about whether you play ball in College because honestly the likelihood of you making it into the NBA are slim.. Its all about getting that College Diploma. That separates the men from the boys. Stop bashing our players and get a life. Coach Larry?? LoL Coach Who?????

  19. peekfatdaddy

Hey Coach Larry, I got a few for you. How about Rick Cadell, playing at St. Francis – NY, Rodney Headley played at SUNY – Cortlandt, Elliot Watson at Dominican, Allen Jenkins – played at a couple of schools and now Assistant Coach at Monroe College, Cori Spencer – Finished his career at Stony Brook, Mookie Jones – Syracuse, Elton Brand – NBA All Star, Hilton Armstrong – New Orleans Hornets, Tygee Washington – played at Hudson Valley Community College, Tim Strang, played at Hudson Valley Community College and current Assistant Coach at Lakeland, Gary “PJ” Male – played at Hudson Valley Community College, Ralph Watts – University of Albany, Derrick Dennis – playing football at Temple, Neil Purvis – playing in the Arena Football League, Derrick Robillard – played with Mt. Vernon’s Gary Bryant at CW Post, Brent Dabbs – Rutgers, Vriginia, then overseas. Should I name a few more or is your little brain overloaded, you idiot. Shut your damn mouth if you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.

  20. joe b

Coach Larry, who gave you that title. What are you some kind of a moron. I get it. You’re Larry the Cable Guy and this is a joke. Just like you.

  21. joe b

Coach Larry, we will now call you “coach Larry the Cable Guy. It is fitting!!!!!!!

  22. HRs

Boss.. Lance will win the award this year. 4 city championships and potentilly 3 federation championships will never happen again

  23. IonaFootball

    HRs

Can you imagine what Bishop Loughlin would have looked like if Stephenson, Doron Lamb and Devon Ebanks did not transfer out. They would have all played at least 1 year together with Stephenson and Lamb having 3 seasons together.

  24. HRs

That would have been an absolute joy to watch. The big question would have been whether those stars could have put their egos aside and played together as a team.

  25. DownTown

Doesn’t it ever bother Peekskill supporters that they have to constantly defend their program against various accusations of improprieties? Whether it’s running up the score, putting an injured player back in the game,or a questionable transfer student, there always seems to be an issue with this team. No doubt their record over the years is outstanding and they have produced several outstanding NBA and Division 1 players, but you just don’t hear about the same controversies with other leading programs in the Section.

  26. iona

when a team is on top, like peekskill is, there will always be the “coach larrys” and the “downtowns” of the world who want to try to rain on your parade…the teams guys like this root for were sent home long ago.
amazing that just hours before peekskill will square off for the new york state championship these haters start spewing more venom than usual.

  27. greg k

DOwnTown, I expect that after today they will not have to defend their program. Peekskill’s consistency spks for itself

  28. DownTown

Iona and greg k you have missed my entire point which is not surprising but people who REALLY know high school sports know exactly what I mean. In the meantime keep measuring the success of a program by wins and losses. Apparently that’s all you care about.

  29. joe b

Down Town…You and coach Larry the cable guy seem to be the only two people who REALLY know exactly what you mean. Apparently that’s all you care about. And most people who know HS sports are sick and tired of you guys and you selfish comments about teams and players. If you can’t say anything good about someone, don’t say anything at all. Now sit back relax and watch the game.

  30. Coach Larry

Ha Ha!Good feedback, but you guys miss the point. Mr. or Ms. devilsblivet you correct my blog but you cant hide from the truth, your players don’t go anywhere after three State titles and that’s the bottom line. One guy you mention was Rick Cadell and he dropped out of school the same way he dropped in to Peekskill by using someones address, who did he live with while he played at Peekskill Mr. Devilsblivet? Mr.Hilton had one scholorship when he left Peekskill and it wasn’t UConn, he was notice playing ball for the Westchester Hawks, you also mention Brickhouse who had a cup of coffee with the Laker’s but he played no major roll with the team and I cant find him in any books. Mr. Cadell played for me in Harlem in the summer and he came home every weekend when he played for Peekskill, is this a violation? You guys are reaching by giving me past guys of 40 years who played for your school, but you have no comment on the kids who won the state title in the past few years, when we can’t answer the question we tend to distract because have no answer. Mr.Devilblivet, you corrected my grammar but you should direct your teaching to your star special-ed students, I do believe he needs it more than I. Oh, check the rules for D1 players, 2008 was the last year special ed student can play D1 because you need three years of language which special-ed don’t require, your star special-ed last year made it under the wirer so Mr. devil concentrate on your kids english or was you the teacher doing his homework his four years? I want your kids to get to college but the adults in Peekkskill got their head in the sand.

  31. joe b

Coach Larry the Cable Guy.. Why is it you mention players who played for you and knock them. I guess your are a kiss and tell coach. Any more good stories about guys who played for YOU. Quit patting yourself on the back with all the names you know. Go watch some of your old videos.

  32. Coach Larry

Ha ha! Good game today Peekskill, now its time to get your kids to college and stop going down memory lane and give me kids from your recent three state titles, Rick had to go to prep in NC and then he went D1, oh, D2 you get a free ride not D3. Mr. Joe or Ms. joe you can come down to the Gauchos gym on Monday, Wed and Fri and you can see me in person, I’m 6’3 220 and hard to miss or do you want me to be the cable guy when you go to work? I don’t make house calls or go that way joe.

  33. joe b

Coach Larry the Cable Guy. The Grim Reaper. Couldn’t wait to chime in on the kids who played thier hearts out. 6’3 and 220. I didn’t know they piled S&*t that high.

  34. Coach Larry

Yeah! they have been playing their hearts out but the last few years your senior haven’t been rewarded with a free ride to college or are they just for Peekskill adult entertainment ms. joe because I truly believe you got a lot of fruit in you, I guess you’re looking for a man hug but I stated before I don’t go that way.

  35. joe b

Not being from Peekskill, I wouldn’t know about Peekskill Adult Entertainment Coach Larry the Cable Guy.. How is it you know about man hugs and Adult Entertainment. And do you call all guys ms ?

  36. Coach Larry

I call you ms because that what you sound like. I guess you have a thing for cable men because I never mention I was a cable worker or that’s what your wife like and you too.

  37. joe b

Coach Larry the Cable Guy. now you are getting personnal. I never said anything about your partner in life. Did I? I don’t even know the man. Was he a Gaucho. It seems you like Argentinian cowboys. Do you like rodeo.

  38. Poco

Why does it matter so much if Peekskill has had any D1 players in recent years? If anything it makes their success that much more impressive because they get the most out of the talent they have, D1 or not!

  39. KINGHTSNUMBA1

    BEDEVEIL21 / DEVILBLIVET / JOE B / JMOOSE

I guess what coach larry is trying to say is that winning the state chip is great for peekskill the town. but actually what are the kids getting from it other than they can say when they are working at the local target 5 yrs later that they won a state chip in 2008. that is really nothing when that is compared to the time and dedication that they left behind. as we know college is very very expensive and as a coach he is just trying to say is that least the coaching staff can do is get these kids some sort of a free ride on the next level. i agree with him when comes to putting the kids future in front of your coaching record as a coach you not gonna rescue every kid but you have save more than you lose. people remember the most valuable thing. as a coach you are playing with alot of kids future. it is your responsibility to do the right thing and COACH LARRY is not a nut job just using the wrong words. just think of it as your child what would you want the coach to put first, wins or loses or your child getting a higher education for free or some of it free

  40. lefty

Lets take a step back and look at what you guys are bashing Peekskill for… Because every graduating senior doesn’t get a basketball scholarship to college then the program is a failure? Get the hell out of here. Colleges don’t just give out free rides to anybody, and the fact that Peekskill puts out a handful of scholarship players every two years or so with only 700 students in the school is incredible! What other Public schools really have that much better of a track record?? Instead of searching for ways to bash the program, just congratulate the athletes for all their hard work.

  41. Peek Fan

Im sure a loud mouth piece of garbage like this larry the loser who calls himself a coach has no scholarship info on any program. He seems to be just another fool who just wants to target a successful program. He makes accusation that he cant support because he has never been apart of anything of worth.I’m sure he wouldn’t spot a college coach if he stood right in front of him.Knights before you speak I would hope you would be looking at the program it appears you support. Also larry you seem to be a REAL PIECE OF S@#T,GET A LIFE !!!!!

  42. SUCCESS4our KIDS

Fella’s – what is your definition of success? Is it winning a basketball championship or is it getting our kids in college? If a successful program, like Peekskill’s Basketball, can’t get their seniors scholarships into college and give them the opportunity to become like Pataki, Jackson, Scott——do you consider it successful? Please focus ladies and gentleman, stop getting angry at the deliverers of information that if read the right way, can REALLY HELP OUR KIDS!!!! What is your “true” definition of success????

  43. lefty

    Mr. Success,

what public high school basketball program do you know that sends every one of their athletes to college on scholarship? because I would love to move there so one day my future kids can play on that team. Scholarships don’t grow on trees. Peekskill puts out more college players than most teams in the state.

Now if you’re talking about just getting into and going to college then I agree there is a problem there. But that doesn’t revolve around just the basketball program.

  44. Peekskillresident

I was at Glenn Falls today and witness a good game.I happen to get on line tonight and read some of the comments you guys made toward Coach Larry. Coach made some good points on Peekskill basketball program and instead of the readers bashing him why not look at the problems we had the past few years on getting our kids to college because I too believe that’s what its all about. We have kids like Devon, Mike, Darnell and a host of kids that played for Peekskill in the past few years that didn’t recieve a scholarship. I see to many kids from past teams working at Wal-Mart, the dollar store and hanging out on Main Street after playing varsity basketball. Stop bashing the coach and look at the problem.

  45. elijah

Coach Larry was arrested years ago for sexually molesting a 12 year old boy and was never convicted because the child wouldn’t testify against him seeing the coach face to face frieghting him. Coach Larry still coaches youth basketball down county and thinks we all have forgotten about his ill fated ways. Coach I warned you that if you ever rattled my cage this big dog will come back and bite you instead you think pushing people in upper Westchester I was going to crawl up into a ball and say it’s not my battle well your wrong. Care to go another round fool TRY ME!

  46. elijah

I stand corrected, Coach Larry I apologies for my last blog. My buddy just called my and told me you’re not the gentleman that I had this issue with years ago. I deeply regret any wrong doing I might have inflicted upon you with my hatred toward the fool whom shares the same name as you. I hope You understand that when my little boy was violated years ago by that jerk it put me in suck a rage that when I hear a name such as your’s I quickly assume that it’s that fool whom hurt my little boy and don’t think clearly before going on a rampage in my quest to get even with that bastard. Again Coach Larry I deeply regret any wrong doing against you I might have caused and I hope you accept my apology.

  47. elijah

To all the other readers, I feel like a jerk going out against this Coach Larry so please don’t attack the coach in regaurds from my stupid blog. I was born and raised in southern Westchester and dreamed of raising my family there like I was but when I had my boy in youth sports down there, there was a fool with the same name that violated my boy and after seeing what an animal could get away with I did the next best thing in moving my family out of harms way ended up in the Peekskill area so any problem I’ve had with anyone from southern Westchester is all related to one jerk that ruined my american way of life and got away with it. Please don’t attack this Coach Larry on the false pretense I have blogged here against him. So everyone knows that This Coach Larry isn’t the fool I was referring too, my friend informed me that my evil coach has since moved down to Carolina and was killed in a car crash some years ago by his own doings, Drunk Driving. Once again Coach Larry I’m sorry I wasn’t thinking clearly and attack you unprovokedly and I hope you can find it Your heart to forgive me for I am truely sorry for what I’ve said think You where him.

  48. Big John

When talking about the youths of today and furthering their education does it matter if they play sports or not? Today more and more students are dropping out of school all over the country and it didn’t matter if they were jocks or not. The education progams though out America have falling behind in educating ALL students and if we as Americans don’t step up and revitalize this system we will have a lot more problems than worrying whether or not the students was an athelete or not.
Mr. Elijah my sympathy and understanding is with you in your trying times I hope you and your boy have moved on in life.

  49. Peekskillnative

This blog comment about Coach Larry has gotten totally out of hand with him abusing kids, I know the coach for twenty years and he has helped many kids in the inner city to this day get to college, stay drug free and all this comes from giving back to the community where he still live, he gave you clowns his real first name but the kids know him by his nickname and so does many college and prep coaches. What the heck is going on with the people posting rage blog and then some nut job blast him for abusing his kid, wow! He really needs to stay off this blog and seek help because this isn’t the place for his rage. Getting back to the coach L comment I would like to make one too. We cry about Barry Bonds and A-Rod cheating but we turn a blind eye when its in our own back yard. Do you think Barry’s record should be voided? How about A-Rod? If so we should void Peekskill State championship with Rick Cardell and games with Mr. Watts because as a Peekskill native and a fan everyone knows both of them was just hired guns bought into win games, I feel for the kids who lost last night game who live here but for Mr. Watt I have no sympathy for because you came just for a championship and you left Lakeland high and dry! He came here and took a kids spot on the team with his scholarship from Albany in his back pocket just to fill his resume but with no championship, good, was it worth it? The lesson learned in Peekskill lost is to the adults, stop cheating and play the game the right way and get our kids to college. Coach and staff can keep looking the other way but cheating is cheating and the kids on the team and at the high school see how you win games so I guess its alright for them to cheat on a exam or in life.

  50. Coach Larry

My buddy just called me and told me to get on the Westchester news blog and see what this guy is accusing me of. I just read it and after I did I was very hurt by his comment, I also wish to leave no comment. My work is not finish down here after thirty years of working with kids so good luck to the kids from Peesksill and to my main man up there and a guy I respect, Pj Tinsley. No more comments from me, you guys really need help up there! Oh, Rice down here is going to the Federation and all the seniors are going to college on a free ride. C Ya!

  51. COS

    Coach Larry,

You know, if your kids would have just studied harder and did better on their SAT’s, they probably would get a full ride scholarship anyway based on acedemics and financial need. There is 20 times more money available for acedemics than sports.

Why are you ragging at Peekskill, just because they all didn’t get a bball scolarship to a D I school doesn’t mean they are not going to college and it doesn’t mean they will not be getting money.

Stop being so full of yourself.

  52. Poco

Burn! Good one Coach Larry. How can you even compare Peekskill with Rice high school? Rice, as I’m sure you’re aware, is a private school in NYC that recruits the best players year in and year out. Peekskill is a public school located in a small city. I just don’t understand your logic of every Peekskill player getting a free ride to college. Again, this is not Rice or CTK we’re talking about here. Many of the Peekskill players don’t get a free ride because they don’t have D1 talent, nothing wrong with that. Do you suggest the other players get a free ride to D2 and D3 schools? It’s nice that you want the kids to go to college but your argument is weak.

  53. Peek Fan

Peek native,Larry and all the rest of you morons who have a problem with Peekskill basketball. For one its Watts and secondly you haven’t a clue as to why he left LL.If you want to know ask his Dad Ralph Sr who was also born and raised in Peekskill. Also were not asking for any sympathy from you, your a fool to believe that yours would matter. And Larry Ive known PJ all my life,Im surprised he would associate with a someone like yourself.

  54. Gaucho b-ball

Let me tell you a little bit about the Gaucho program. First we don’t have a NBA player who makes 20 million a year nor did we have the luxury of having a former governor in our program, but our NBA players and successful members give back to our program. We’re the home of Rice home games and we have our own AAU program from youth to teens and we’re rated in the top of the country every year. We’re in the Bronx and our kids come from the inner city. Our kids don’t pay to play for us and our coaches are great leaders in our community. You mention all the people that has grace Peekskill doors but are they giving back, do you guys have your own AAU team? Don’t knock our coach because I will put his record vs your beloved coach any day on getting kids to college and it not just star players. Reading some of your comments remind me when President Obama was running for office and the hate mail and the posted stuff that was popping up or stuff from the south when it was so much racism. When you don’t know someone or you judge someone by their race it becomes a major problem, it’s very sad.You call him stupid, you question his grammar an you call him names that’s shades of the deep south, no wonder the kids up there don’t go anywhere. Is Peekskill still a republican strong hold? Just play basketball Boy’s I guess that’s a old boy saying!

  55. Peek Fan

Gaucho, your a bigger ass than larry, cleary youve never been out of the Bronx b/c you obviously dont know where Peekskill is let alone the racial makeup of the town.No republican stronghold up here and definitely no good all boys defending or feeding this hateful topic unless that would be you or larry.

The Adventures of Coach Larry in Coach Larry’s Land of Make Believe

    Micky Jayden: Hey Coach Larry
    Coach Larry: It’s King Larry
Micky Jayden: You changed you name to King Larry?
    Coach Larry: Yes
    Micky Jayden: Why?
Coach Larry: Because I AM THE KING of the Gau-Chooooos, not Prince, not Duke not Earl.
    Micky Jayden: Okay King
    Coach Larry: King Larry
Micky Jayden: Okay King Larry, can you get me a scholarship into college.
    Coach Larry: No. not yet.
    Micky Jayden: Why not?
Coach Larry: Because you are not WORTHY.
Micky Jayden: What are you talking about I’m averaging 20 points a game.
Coach Larry: I know, but you’re only a Junior and you still have to do more.
Micky Jayden: I thought the teachers, administrators, counselors and coaches over at Bice High School took care of the scholarships?
Coach Larry: NO, it is I King Larry I control all of the scholarships throughout the land.
Micky Jayden: Okay, what do I have to do, study for the SAT’s.
Coach Larry: No, take the Larrymobile and drive up to Beekskill high school and bring back the magic Broomstick they use to swing into the State Final Four every year.
Micky Jayden: You mean take the Gauchos van.
Coach Larry: Yes, that’s the one.
Micky Jayden: I don’t have a driver’s license yet remember.
Coach Larry: Okay, I’ll drive you.
Micky Jayden: Can me stop at McDonald’s, pleeeaase.
    Coach Larry: Sure

Coach Larry: Micky, take a picture of the Broomstick I am going to email it to beekfatdaddy
Micky Jayden: Okay King Larry here you go.
Coach Larry: Dear beekfatdaddy, LOOK what I have.
    Ring, Ring,
Coach Larry: It must be fatdaddy
Beekfatdaddy: Larry, What’s that in the picture.
Coach Larry: It’s the Beekskill Magic Broomstick, and now it’s mine, mine mine. You’re not going to the final 4 next year, and No scholarships for you.
    Beekfatdaddy: That’s not a Broomstick, that’s a Lacrosse Stick
    Coach Larry: A Who?
Beekfatdaddy Not a Who? A What?
    Coach Larry: A What?
Beekfatdaddy: A Lacrosse stick, it’s used to play a game, on a field where you run up and down, like basketball, take shots with that ball in the net, and try to score goals.
Micky Jayden: I was wondering why there was a ball in the Broomstick. Hey Fatdaddy if I practice a lot can I get a scholarship into college to play Lacrosse.
    Beekfatdaddy: You sure can!!
Micky Jayden: Really, what do I need to do to get a scholarship?
Beekfatdaddy: You take that stick with you everywhere you go, and you cradle the stick and the net back and forth, and even do so 360’s.
Micky Jayden: 360’s that sounds like fun.
Micky Jayden: Should I move to Beekskill
Beekfatdaddy: No probably not for Lacrosse, I would go to Porktown.
Micky Jayden: I’ll do it, Coach Larry, I’m moving to Porktown to play Lacrosse.
    Coach Larry: It’s King Larry
Micky Jayden: No it’s Coach again, remember we don’t have Broomstick.
    Coach Larry: Drats, foiled again!!

Larry stepped out on the balcony and listened to the people chat, LARRRR-RiEEEE, LARRRR-RiEEEE

The Gaucho program is without a doubt a great program that does great things for the kids. And of course Rice is an incredible basketball school that is always among the best in the nation. I don’t think anybody is denying that. What people got upset about is that this guy came on the blog and bashed a public school with 700 students about not putting out enough talented players into college, when the school does so more than 95% of schools the same size. Then when a list of players who went to college was given, the players on the list were bashed and discredited for their accomplishments. Yeah Peekskill can’t compare to the putout of Rice and the other NYC schools, but thats because those schools get their choice of athletes from THE BIGGEST TALENT POOL IN THE WORLD. No surprise that they put out more college talent players there.

Now if you want to talk about getting students into college and onto a better life, I agree that there is a problem and that something needs to be done. But that is a much bigger issue, and this is a basketball blog. No matter what way you look at it, the talent that Peekskill puts out given their circumstances cannot be denied.

  60. Nachos

Guys sorry for the multiple posts, there was somethine strange going on with the computer.

You Gauchos guys are total morons, I am already talking to the Rice Senior people about you. Your public comments will be forwarded. Thank you idiots.

  61. Peekskillnative

Nachos you give Peekskill residents a bad name because I really don’t have a clue what you’re saying an I don’t think you do either. You’re talking to Rice senior who? And about what? And he’s a idiot, guy you’re way off base.He never bash the Peekskill kids, he commented on the kids not getting to college after all the sweat and commitment they put out.You should read his comment instead of running away with your comment. Our kids played against them many times with Pj taking our kids down in the summer and we held our own so what are you talking about. Mt.Vernon gets their kids to college and they’re public school just like ours so what is the next excuse for you guys. Call the police on him too! What a joke u guys are. We should play more games out of conference so our kids can get more exposure like Lincoln, Mt Vernon. The good teams go out of state to play and they lose a few games but the scouts get a chance to see them play, you guys sound like nut jobs, get a grip. Coach brought every crazy cat out in Peekskill an I never throught we had so many. Why don’t you put the blame at the feet of our head coach if you give him all the credit for wins but kids getting to college isn’t his fault!

  62. Nachos

    Peekskillnative

    Relax, it’s fiction

  63. peekfatdaddy

Peekskillnative, here’s an idea. Move out of Peekskill you idiot. Peekskill will never get the exposure, because they are never allowed to travel as much as the other schools. The school board barely pays for uniforms. If it wasn’t for Elton, there wouldn’t even be uniforms. Mt. Vernon and the city schools all have Nike contracts and are sponsored. You have no idea what you are talking about.

  64. joe b

It’s amazing how people come on these blogs and give themselve great names. Is Peekskillnative really a Peekskill native. Is Nachos really a Nacho or just a steal potato chip. However he does have a good sense of humor unlike Peekskillnative. I am going to change my name to (joe knows it all and is 100% correct about everything he says). That way I can say anything I want to say and not be questioned about it. Like the time I scored 7 TDs in the Super Bowl. Or when I scored 72 points in the NCAA Finals. Oh , I also won the Iditarod. However I lost the presidency by 3 votes. I coached Jim Brown in football, Kareem Abdul Jabbar in basketball and Babe Ruth in Baseball. I may even go as far as saying I am the sequal, Peekskillnative II. “I WILL BE BACK”. Hosta La Vista, Baby !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  65. Peekskillnative

Joe and Peekfatdaddy stay out of Kelly’s because you’re obviously hitting the brew before you guys made your comment. I guess I have to get out of town if I dont agree with you guys and that’s crazy! Come down to the canteen after dark if you dear to an you will find the kids to the last few states titles playing rec ball my man!! They’re good kids an I talked to them frequently on this same topic. Give me a break on Elton giving back, the last thing he gave was money for cameras to watch those people in the projects and the canteen! Do we have an AAU program? No! You guys mention all these big time alma’s that came from here but what are they doing for the kids? The kids have to travel 5o miles to the Westchester Hawks AAU program with 600.00 in hand to play unless you was the star player of last year team then you got chauffeured by our half time music men for free while the Hawks set up shop for free in Mt.Vernon during the winter. So stick a stock in it because the kids are only being pimped here.

  66. joe b

Peekskillnative, did you mean sock ? “So stick a stock in it because the kids are only being pimped here.” Or are you just showing your sense of humor !!!!!! “Come down to the canteen after dark if you dear”. And don’t call me dear, I don’t even know you.

  67. fatty

Looks like peak was weak. No legs left to deal with JD. Couldn’t get the boys to play with enough intensity and be aggressive. Maybe no coaching or poor preparation by the staff. After all the motivation stuff to get JD….ha ha ha. peak is weak, couldn’s take care of business in glen falls. Wait till they get Haldane next year. Maybe they will try to schedule Rice or St Anthony of Jersey City next year. coach p to smart for that.

  68. peekfatdaddy

Peekskillnative, you have no idea what you are talking about. Second, I have been to the canteen frequently and coached alot of these kids when they were younger, including Ralph Watts, since he is FROM Peekskill. In case you haven’t been on Main St. lately, have you seen the CAMP Office next to Kennedy Fried Chicken that Elton and his mother Pay for and Coach P runs? Coach P tried to start an AAU team a couple of years ago, but noone signed up since they were already committed to play for other teams. These other AAU teams are paid for by these guys that are hooked up in all kinds of things and have the money to pay for travel and all the rest. You want to be from Peekskill, but you’re really not.

  69. peekfatdaddy

By the way, you only know about Kelly’s because it is right next to the train station that you pass everyday going to your real house.

  70. Peekskillnative

Ha ha! correct my grammar but your boy Nacho’s grammar was off the chart so I guess if you agree with your bull you can miss-spell without any corrections! Camp Inc. is a joke and any kid you ask will tell you the same, how much is coach getting paid to run it? You guys really need to pitch in and help the kids on the team with there grammar because Camp inc. isn’t doing it. Elton and his mother tried to move the kids out of the canteen on Thurdays because they wanted to practice time for their semi-pro team, but we protested and they went somewhere else. Oh, Elton comes once a year to the river front and hold a clinic and then coach p have a summer camp outside of Peekskill for 500 per kid,one better he pays the kids off the team 100 dollars for the whole week while he keeps the rest. Who’s Elton really helping dude? because he’s not helping Peekskill kids. Have you ever heard of Tim Thomas? He plays for the Knick’s for a fraction of the money elton makes and he has a AAU program in NJ called the players, they develop their youth. When coach made a good comments you guys question his grammar and called him names so why not expect the same treatment from you’ll. You know who’s really making a killing off of elton? You know who and I refuse to mention his name so wake-up and smell your own S!!!! Keep paying for hired guns while our taxes continue to go up, unless you’re not a homowner like me, oh now I got it, you’re the coach yes men! Correct this my friend! The coach was right when he said you can’t play D1 ball when you’re a special-ed student so talking to a college coach at glenn falls don’t mean jack, because the first thing they ask is how’s your grades. All these english majors why don’t you help the kids on the team out instead of correcting me because I sure as hell don’t need it, my house is paid for an I have a great job, so lay off the nasty comments if don’t have good suggestion to make to get these kids to college. This is a blog not a SAT exam.

  71. peekfatdaddy

Peekskillnative, you aren’t even worth talking to, because you don’t know sh*t. Maybe you’re just mad because Elton isn’t paying your salary and as you can see, my grammar is perfect. I have lived in Peekskill my whole life, went to Peekskill schools, and own a home here, so you aren’t telling me anything. You should go somewhere else if you feel that way, because obviously you are too good for Peekskill and the lowlifes that you feel live around you. We don’t want you anyway. Maybe you are one of the idiot artists that moved downtown and don’t give anything back to the community, or you voted for our disgrace Mayor Foster.

  72. Big John

Well well well what do we have here? New players to do the coaches dirty work. I’m still up here in Glens Falls soaking in some of the local color and enjoying myself with my old Lady. We decided weeks ago we would make a full week of this place since our kids are all in college now and we are huge basketball fans, we would watch the states and federation championships and we’re even enjoyed the Globetrotters tonight. What a team, what a team, funny as all heck and they know how to put on a show but now getting back to my main business but first.
Coach Larry I know what Elijah said was wrong but at least the gentleman had the courage to admit he was wrong and asked for everyones understanding and your forgiveness. It’s the least we can do for him being that he intrusted his child to a person whom he thought would look out for his kid’s best interest but turned out to the one you wouldn’t want you kid’s to be with, unfortunately his name and yours are the same I could see where he’s comming from. Looking back over all the blogs that have been posted and the bickering and shop calling that this blog has turned into you can tell nothing good was gonna come out of this, I even told the old lady that there was trouble comming soon.
And now Coach Larry, are you comming up here to GLENS FALLS with Rice this weekend? I’m looking foward to seeing a grown man cry when Rice loses to Abraham Lincoln on Saturday. And why did you recruit others into your battles you where doing just fine until Peekskillnative started his foolishness, I think I’ll drop the “t” in his hame and call him by his new name, well it fits him prefectly. My man Peekfatdaddy answered your question about Peekskill graduates NOW it’s your turn to name names from your program and now remember Edmund Rice will turn over in his grave if you lie. And I still can’t wait to return home and read that postcard from you on your trip to Genn Falls.
    Again, anxiously awaiting your reply.

  73. Peekskillnative

Wow! Now I’m Coach L Lacky! If you read his last comment he stated he wasn’t going to belittle himself by replying to every nut job in Peekskill an I can’t blame him. I went down to the canteen tonight to see what was going on. The kids was playing pick-up games and having fun with Pj running the show. I saw Jamie, Pooh-Bear and a few other kids there, I inquired about the seniors and who was going to college and no one gave me any good news about college. This coach don’t have to prove anything to you guys because Rice and the Gaucho program speaks for themselves. Linclon or Rice win wouldn’t matter to either program because its about getting kids to college and both programs are sending all there seniors to college somewhere. A state title is not worth the paper its written on if the kids don’t get to college. I speak for me and me alone so I guess I’m not in your band. I will put my career/job and finance against anyone of you nut jobs and the loser of the bet give it to charity. I showed my daughter this blog and the comments adults make when one don’t agree with them and one has to stand for something or fall for anything. Good luck Peekskill fans because I too will not belittle myself commenting to foul mouth people.

  74. Devilsblivet

That’s right all you fan’s from Peekskill don’t you know every player that ever played under Coach Larry has gone on with a full scholarship to the Albert Einstien School of Medicine and became a Rhodes Scholar and now you’ve done it you’ve gotten on Peekskillnaive’s bad side.
Hey Peekskillnative, A lot of students don’t have their college careers in order yet OR maybe don’t feel like they have to tell everyone their business. I know a person of your caliber understands that so don’t go off half cocked and start attacking students because you feel you deserve an answer.

  75. studentfirst

I guess everyone that disagree with the way the student/athete at Peekskill are handled by coach and staff are put into a cage, I’m commenting on the basketball team. Have you ever went to senior day away at some of these high schools? I did,at Half time all the seniors ballers line-up on the court with there parents and their colleges are mention and where they’re going so its no secret mr devil. I also have gone to senior day at the high school and no colleges are mention. If you read all the comments that were made it was toward the program, i.e coaches, staff and we also failed to mention the A.D. Why don’t you talk to some of the seniors too and find out where they’re going after fighting so hard to finish 2nd in the state instead of attacking others. You correct people who comment on this blog grammer when they don’t see it your way but leave nut jobs blog a lone that see it your way. I showed my wife your blog and she’s a teacher so she proof read it because I’m not as smart as you and she founded numerous mistakes but what the hell this not an exam but a blog. Why don’t we put the blame where it belong and that’s right at the foot of the head basketball coach and A.D. We can get these kids up at 6:00A.M for practice but we can’t have tutorial session at camp inc. in the morning beofore class. Mr.Devil being that you like to correct folks grammar why don’t you volunteer your services at the camp because you’re so smart. If Peekskill was a college program it would be on academic probation because no one is helping these kids during and after the season is over. Start correcting mr.devil I’m finish!

  76. studentfirst

Oh! mr. devil, Coach Larry haven’t made a comment since March 23rd at 11:35 so why you keep commenting on him! Get a life and help a kid and come out of your glass house! Our kids need help and bashing people who don’t agree with you and your friends aint helping one kid!! Yes I said aint!!! So correct that too!!!!

  77. peekfatdaddy

Studentfirst, maybe you should take your wife’s grammar class, because yours sucks. I FOUNDED alot of mistakes in your comments as well.

  78. studentfirst

She didn’t proof read mine an I already have a good job so what’s your point dude? Why don’t you volunteer too at camp inc. being that we have so many smart Peekskill fans. Its amazing how we point fingers but you have no answer to these kids going to college so I guess that makes you a real smart fan. A lot of kids SAT’s are low so who fault is that? I know who fault it is, it Coach Larry! He’s responsible for all the bad stuff in the Peekskill program and coach p and a.d cain get a pass. I gave them small letters because they dont deserve Captial letters dude! If Mookie can pass an SAT every kid on the team can unless you have one person in the class when he took the test!!! What happen when he don’t make pro, which his chances are slim to none. You did his homework, you pass him on, now he has to work hard in class and in practice because the Best East aint Hen Hud or LakeLand! I wish him well because I doubt one of you very smart guys from Peekskill will have a job for him, Oh, I forgot you guys are fans and cheerleaders!!!

  79. Highschoolparent

The guys who spoke the truth about our program got hammered, but its all true! Its so hateful comments you guys made and it still don’t solve the problem with these kids playing basketball. When you play college sports you’re playing for your tutions and when you’re in high school you’re playing for a sholarship so its no middle ground. W and L dont mean a thing if your kids dont get to the next level. Do you know how much it cost for college, I have two kids that are in now and its no joke on my pockets, its no free money out there for college so the kids that play sport at a high level are looking for a free ride and I have no problem with that. Stop being so mad when someone is pointing out the negative in a program. If you just want to watch kids play ball with no feedback go to the park or take your kid to park an enjoy them. I’m a parent of a former red devil and we received no help for college and that was the 2007 championship year!

  80. peekfatdaddy

I think that you guys are missing the point here. Parents should not be looking to High School Basketball coaches to create miracles and get their kids into college. The parents should take it upon themselves to see that their kids are going to school and getting the education that they are there for. Basketball and all other sports are a great way to get a scholarship if you are good enough, but let’s face it, schools like Peekskill have 2 or 3 kids each year that would even be considered College Basketball players. The blame should go to the parents first for letting their kids hang in the streets, then the school and the guidance counselors. I understand and know through experience of working in a college that all parents can not afford college, but putting your hopes and drams on a basketball scholarship is helping these kids to the streets and WalMart. I applaud the kids who at least get a job and try not to get in trouble, because I know too many of my classmates and former basketball players that are either in prison or dead, some of them who thought that they should be college basketball players.

And besides, you cannot compare a school like Rice to Peekskill. Most of the kids at Rice are close to All Americans or recruited solely to play Basketball. Most of them are ready for the college game and went to Rice to get more exposure. I have no problem with them going to a bigger school, who gets sponsored by shoe companies and travels all over the country to get exposure. If they can do it, more power to them. I don’t think that Mo Hicks or any of the other coaches deserves as much credit as they do for getting the kids into school, because most of them are already on their way when they reach Rice. Do you think that Mo Hicks was responsible for getting Felipe Lopez into St. John’s? No way, he was just a small part. I applaud Mo for keeping the kids together and making sure that they don’t fall off the map, but coaches in private and Catholic schools have an incentive because the schools have invested alot of money in scholarships for these players to come to their schools and it is in their best interests if they want to continue coaching.

Thanks for the comment Peekfatdaddy with no nasty comments! We have a bigger problem in Peekskill program and we fail to understand the root of it. Mo Hicks wasn’t the coach at Rice when Mr. Lopez was there it was Lou DeMelo of the Westchester Hawks, the program was nowhere near it’s now and more kids are off to college with Mr. Hick’s help. Rice doesn’t play with ther academics, Rice had a kid who they kicked out because he didn’t follow the rules and guess where the kid landed after Rice? Peekskill, his name was Donte Manigualt. It’s not all about basketball at Rice, its about turning boys in to man. Rice plays against Lincoln this week and they’re a public school so we really have to start looking with in. These kids took the JD that was rated 20 in the country into overtime and you tell me we can’t get our guys to college. Come on Peekdaddy that start putting pressure on the right people at that school. Oh, the tallest cat in Walmart is Mookie’s brother and he played what year? So lets make a collective effort that WalMart dont turn into Peekskill University. Have a nice day Peek D!

Rick Carpiniello from the journal ask Coach Panzanaro his uniqiue perspective on JD vs Iona prep. Why don’t you ask him how many seniors on his team are going to college this year, stop the baby question Rick .

Sounds like someone needs to get back into anger management classes. Say high to Coach Larry and Peekskillnative for us.

  85. Madas??

I guess no one is mad at coach, staff and the school in general for putting out bad academic product when it comes to their basketball team. A lot of the kids on the team are from single parent families and they live in places like Dunbar, and the project next to the canteen. I was wondering why LakeLand didn’t put up a stink when we took their best player, I did my own investigation Mr.Carpinello on the matter. It appeared that Mr. Hired gun was from Peekskill living with family, i.e father and he sent him to live with his aunt in LakeLake which so many white families do, when Mr.Hired gun game became to big for LakeLand he wanted to come back to Peekskill to get that ring and scholarship because no one leave a good academic high school and go to a poor one without a motive, LakeLake got burnt so they walked away like a jilted lover. I see when people who are really concern about our kids make great comments they need anger management or they’re a A-whole! I believe those three state titles in the past few years are no more than bathroom tissue if the best we can do is send these kids to WalMart/Best Buy/ Shoprite University! You have six coaches on the bench what is their purpose for being there beside sitting on the bench? You have a bunch of men with comments that’s off base and you guys dont give a hoot so long as you win games!!! Sad people!

  86. Madas??

Yes! I do know his father is black Peekskill fans!!!!!

I was reading the comments when Coach Larry and Peekskillknative made good statements, you called him a day dreamer an a lot more, but Peekskill fans you’re the people living on fantasy Island. I lived in LA for twent-five years an a long time Laker fan before I moved to Peekskill. The journal news and the Peekskill people have been pushing this story that Brickhouse grandfather was a LA Laker player. I would like the journal or one of your smart Peekskill citizens to tell me what year did Mr. Brickhouse played for the Laker’s and who did he play with, Jerry West,Miken,Magic? I really like to know who’s dreaming because Mr. Brickhouse never played for the Laker’s. I guess we dream because we don’t want to face reality!

    Factman;
In 1971 the Los Angeles Lakers drafted Willian “Bill” Brickhouse 13th in the 6th round.
