Class AA state regional final: Mount Vernon vs. NFA
-
- March
- 13
9:40 p.m.: The fans are storming the court. Chaos. William Bouton made a falling down one-handed halfcourt shot that banked in at the buzzer. NFA wins 71-70. It was the most incredible shot I’ve ever seen. Ever.
9:39 p.m.: HOLY CRAP. NFA just made a halfcourt shot at the buzzer. NFA WIN 71-70!!!!
9:37 p.m.: Kadeem Dinham just put back a miss with 2 seconds left. Mount Vernon is up 70-68. NFA time out. The Knights actually rushed the court in celebration because the clock read zeros. But the refs had given NFA a timeout. Insanity at Pace!
9:34 p.m.: There was actually a foul during the scrum for the loose ball. NFA’s Patrick Johnson is at the line for two with 33 seconds left.
9:33 p.m.: Two NFA free throws followed by a steal on the inbounds and lay-up made it a 68-66 Mount Vernon lead. Sherrod just missed two free throws with 35 seconds left. NFA ball.
9:30 p.m.: Newburgh has the ball down 68-62 with 1:01 left. NFA is 3 for 8 from the line in the fourth quarter. Mount Vernon is 5 for 6.
9:29 p.m.: Wright just scored his 14th point of the fourth quarter. Mount Vernon is up 68-62 with 1:06 left.
9:26 p.m.: Sherrod Wright looks like LeBron James right now, scoring on every possession and doing it with three defenders around him. Mount Vernon leads 66-62 with 1:48 left.
9:24 p.m.: Mount Vernon leads 62-60 with 2:17 to go. Sherrod Wright has 18 of his 21 points in the second half but is playing with four fouls.
9:19 p.m.: Mount Vernon is up 59-55 with 4:12 to play. This game has been incredible. So much emotion.
9:15 p.m.: Two free throws by Sherrod Wright. Mount Vernon opened up a 59-53 lead with 4:50 left.
9:12 p.m.: Mount Vernon leads 54-53 with 6 minutes left.
9:06 p.m.: What a head-spinning quarter. It ended with Jabarie Hinds fouling (maybe) Marcus Henderson as time expired. Henderson made one and Mount Vernon takes a 50-46 lead in the fourth.
9:01 p.m.: Mount Vernon leads 43-41 with 2:12 left in the third.
8:55 p.m.: Mount Vernon has outscored NFA 11-5 to start the third quarter and leads 40-38 with 4:26 left in the third quarter.
Halftime stats
Mount Vernon — Jordan Lessane, Sean Harris, Jabarie Hinds each have six points. Vaughn Allen has four points and six rebounds and Sherrod Wright has five points, but both sat most of the second quarter before of foul trouble. Mount Vernon has turned the ball over 13 times and shot 2 of 8 from 3s.
Newburgh — Patrick Johnson has eight points and four steals. Marcus Henderson has nine points and six assists and four steals. I don’t care how tall he is, he was the best player on the floor in the first half. Newburgh shot 50-percent from the floor. Only Patrick Johnson has two fouls.
HALFTIME: Newburgh leads Mount Vernon 33-29. Back in a moment with stats.
8:36 p.m.: By the way, is there ever a dull moment with Peekskill?
8:34 p.m.: Newburgh leads 31-27 with 1:17 left in the first half.
8:27 p.m.: Newburgh has closed the gap to 20-18 with 5:24 left in the first half with Michael McLeod at the line trying to convert a four-point play. Sherrod Wright just picked up his second foul. He’s on the bench.
8:20 p.m.: After one quarter, Mount Vernon leads 15-11. NFA led 7-2 before the Knights scored 10 straight points. Vaughn Allen had four points and six rebounds before picking up his second foul four minutes into the game.
8:13 p.m.: Mount Vernon is getting the ball ripped out of its hands here in the opening minutes. Newburgh leads 5-2 with 4:44 left in the third thanks in part to five MV turnovers.
Starting lineups: Mount Vernon — Wright, Clarke, Lessane, Hinds and Allen; Newburgh — Johnson, Bouton, Cousar, McLeod and Henderson.
Just a quick note, NFA really has no size. Henderson is in fact 5-foot-4, not 5-9 as listed (and somebody noted today was wrong).
Pregame: Tonight’s Class AA state regional final between Mount Vernon and Newburgh Free Academy of Section 9 will tip off in about 20 minutes. The Mount Vernon girls were beaten by three by Kingston. The Knights had a 3-pointer at the buzzer bounce off the front of the rim.
Great crowd here for this game.

Kevin
I’m here in Niagara Falls, NY trying to get updates on this game. My best friend Coach Dinnocenzio will get it done tonight! Need some updates…....Is there any live action on can get on the net??? Thanks GO NEWBURGH!
Dave Perri
let’s go mount vernon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
let’s bring it home!!!!!!!!!!
this is our time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sherrod wright played like he deserved to win tonight.
great sherrod. best of luck and ill keep an eye on you down the road
great career sherrod*
yo send dat into sports centa!!!
CONGRATULATIONS NEWBURGH! YOU DESERVE IT! After its past two-point losses to MV, this one belonged to Newburgh. Great game for Sherrod Wright, who almost pulled it out for MV.
THAT’S RIGHT MY FRIEND NFA PULLS IT OUT….. SORRY I MISSED IT BUT I’LL BE THER IN GLEN FALLS NEXT WEEK…...NFA NFA NFA NFA NFA
Kevin,
Thanks for the great reporting. I’m really sorry I missed this one. I guess the final shot will be talked about for a long time.
Didn’t see it. But I have to echo “basketball”’s comment”: great career Sherrod. He’s been a whole lot of fun to watch and I am sure that his future is bright. I would imagine that there is considerable pressure on the senior star on the MV teams each year to at least make it to Glens Falls. The bar is set REAL high, as we all know. But just as important: congratulations to NFA. I say again to Section One fans: go easy on the arrogance. There are ballers EVERYWHERE.
Wow, I thought NFA had no shot vs MV B/c they lost to Pok and Peek… That’s why they play the games though…
[...] Read more about the game on Kevin Devaney’s blog. [...]
That was insane! What an unbelievable ending!!!
Disclaimer – I had no rooting interest.
I think the 2.0 seconds put back on the clock was too much time.
OMG
kevin, that was sick….I was 15 feet directly behind you and your view had to be the best anyone could have had. It was almost like it was going in slow motion once he got it off. I thought Jorden had a shot at a steal, but he didnt want to foul. He caught it over his left shoulder from 5 feet inside the hald court line and turned and took a shot, it was almost like he had tried it before. When it left his hands you could see it had a good loft and the distance was pretty close. But man, when that ball hit the white box on the glass I just could not believe what I had just witnessed. You see that kind of stuff made from a home video camera recorded at games HS games in Wisconsin or Utah. The rushing of fans to the court was unreal.
Everyone who saw that will remember it for ever and this will take a while to get over… Congrats to New Burgh they played a great game It’s too bad the seniors on MV had to go out that note.
YOU LET NFA HANG AROUND AND CRAZY THINGS HAPPEN.
I SAW THE SHOT GO IN AND IT STILL TOOK ABOUT 20 SECONDS TO BELIEVE IT REALLY HAPPENED.THAT SHOT WILL LAST A LIFE TIME FOR THAT PLAYER.SORRY FOR MV, CONGRATS TO NFA.
I thought the clock read 1.4 seconds, The refs put 2.0 seconds, either way the kid still got the shot off before time ran out.
FAN
I agree 100%.. he got that shot off in a second.
MV let newburgh hang around and it hurt. I thought there was 1.8 left, but that kid got the shot off quick enough. INCREDIBLE SHOT!!!!!
Does anyone remember if newburgh scored after the missed call when the ball clearly went out of bounds off the newburgh players head (into the stands)but newburgh got the ball back?
Refs inconsistent, sometimes ticky tac calls sometimes muggings uncalled? Both ways.
newburgh #3 was the best player on the court tonight!
I was sitting behind the basket and could not believe what I witnessed.
Very unfortunate loss for MV who I felt was the superior team. Mount Vernon unfortunately let NFA hang around and lost in an unimaginable way. Very sad for Sherrod Wright who played a terrific 2nd half. His supporting cast just played a below average game.
I thought after McCloud missed that dunk that Mount Vernon would take the game over. The post players on MV just could not get into the flow of the game because MV did have a major size advantage.
Free throw shooting at the end really hurt MV as one of their post players missed a big one and one and Sherod Wright who is a great free throw shooter missed two free throws. Another killer play was the turnover with under 2 minutes by one of the MV guards right in front of the Newburgh bench.
Mount Vernon is the better team who had a bad game and when you are in these one game takes all sometimes the best team does not win.
Kevin,
Did really mean holy crap, or was that the sensored version. The bottom line is, if a team is allowed to hang around, they can beat you with a lucky shot. That’s what can happen in basketball. Basketball is a game of crazy bounces. players miss layups, and players make desperation half court shots at the buzzer. That’s why I love the game, even in defeat. Good luck to Newburgh.
Tomaso
That ball hit off the face of the Newburgh player-Bad call by the refs-
Yes definatly, did they score right after that?
IonaPower
Refs had nothing to do with that shot, it was pure.
Jayden, it sure is a game you love… lol
spacecadet
The ball was off the Newburgh player which took away a possesion for Mount Vernon. Also Coach Cimmino tried to get I believe Sean Harris into the game near the end and the refs did not allow it.
MV just did not get any breaks and did not play to half their abilities which is unfortunate.
Do you remember if newburgh scored on that possesion?
WHY DID MV STAY WITH THE PRESS SO LONG WHEN IT CLEARLY WAS NOT WORKING? SUPRISED AT COACH.NEVER THOUGH I WOULD SAY THAT!!!
AMAZING GAME!! Worth every penny!!
Newburgh deserved it, even though they missed abut 6 layups, 1 dunk and a bunch of Free Throws.
The NEWBURGH Point GUARD GREW On ME. At first I thought he would end the night with 30 turnovers. He was amazing, at one point he beat 4 Mount Vernon players who were pressing him. I hope there is a picture, 4 MV players chasing him from behind. It was a 5 vs 1 for Newburgh.
Mount Vernon traveled with 7 seconds left anyway on top of the 3 pt line. Should have been called!!!
Wright was GREAT, probably should have been givin more chances early on. MV had NFA on the ropes, but couldnt land the knckout punch.
THE GREATEST GAME I EVER BEEN AT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PS
Cimmino hurt Mount Vernon tonight, his team has the talent to win that game 9 out of 10 times.
The Press just didnt work!! So try something else.
Newburgh coach tried everything, and he kept MV off balance with his Defensive changes.
A LOT of Credit goes to NFA COACH
BTW Iona Prep beat NFA by 15 pts and New Ro by 38. Who says they can’t beat MV?
Ionapower,
MV got a HUGE break on there last posession. lesane clearly traveled on the pass to hinds. Hinds missed the shot and the big fella cleaned it up 70-68 MV. That was a HUGE BREAK!
Great Game by both teams but lets be honest, Wright missed to FTs with a 2 point lead and seconds to go. Short ref with Brown hair was horrible for both teams. Most amazing thing I have seen at ahighschool game.
Marcus Henderson was the best player on the floor, he took Hinds to school tonight.
I’d always believed that seeing was believing. Until, that is, I saw Will Bouton’s desperation half-court shot. It was truly amazing, yet I can’t help but feel bad for the Mount Vernon faithful who believed (as I did) that Dinham’s tap-in was the game-winner…
In any case, congratulations to NFA on its monumental (but well-deserved) upset, and best of luck to the Goldbacks as they represent our region in Glens Falls…
3 out of the last 4 years NFA vs MV was a great Game, Two 2 point wins for MV and tonight for NFA. Iam dumbfounded. Great game by NFA. Sometimes better to be lucky than good.
COACHING AND PLAYERS WERE A LITTLE OFF TONIGHT FOR MV.
MV IS THE BETTER TEAM BUT NOT TODAY.
THEY DIDN’T BRING THEIR A GAME AND GOT CAUGHT.SIMPLE AS THAT…
Wow. Well, congrats to Newburgh … it’s tough that MV is always between you and Glens Falls … this is your year. Bring it home!! Condolences to a great MV team. Sports is sports is sports – that’s why we love it, right?
that was the greatest game ive ever seen. im so proud of newburgh. hats off to mount vernon, and we should meet them again next year. cant believe we haven’t been to glens falls since 96.
Embarassing. All I can say. That’s as shocking a loss I’ve seen in a while. MV has NO business losing to NFA. I’m at a loss for words right now.
Well, let’s turn our attention to Peekskill now.
[...] (who beat Maginn but lost to Academy this year). Here’s how things went down, thanks to Kevin Devaney Jr.: 9:37 p.m.: Kadeem Dinham just put back a miss with 2 seconds left. Mount Vernon is up 70-68. NFA [...]
Why are you turning your time to Peekskill. They are only a “A” league. You stated Mount Vernon lost and it’s time to jump on the band wagon,
Be real, be basketball sense!!!!!!
Whe not Iona???????????
HEY BOTH MV TEAMS LOSING SHOULD SAVE MONEY FOR THEIR BUDGET LOL
JUST KIDDING
MOUNT VERNON IS THE PROGRAM EVERYONE WANTS TO BE LIKE. THEY WIN AND THEY ALWAYS CARRY THEMSELVES AS GENTLEMEN.
ALL OF SECTION I SHOULD BE PROUD OF THESE GUYS WHO PUT IN A LOT OF HOURS TO GET WHERE THEY ARE.
BEST OF LUCK TO THE SENIORS AS THEY TURN TOWARDS COLLEGE. NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF, IN SPORTS THIS HAPPENS. IN LIFE YOU GUYS ARE FOREVER WINNERS!!
why did odayne clake barely play? was he sick or injured?also i thought mv presssed to much. i understand that is there fortay but #3 easily broke it by himself. maybe deny him the ball, also why is sherrod on the ball and not allen, keeping sherrod back in center field. allen is longer and can jump just as high. also why is lessane not staying in his hip pocket, forget about the steals, just play great d no gambles. also why is mv inbounding the ball to dinham against the press. mv self distructed last night. i respect everything about the mv program, and they are way out of my league playing wise. heck this are my thoughts and i have had time to think about them COACH C AND STAFF HAD TO ACT QUICKLY. GREAT SEASON, FOR MOST TEAMS, BUT YOU HAVE SET THE BAR FAR AND ABOVE. FORGET ABOUT THE MV BASHING PEEKSKILL, YOU SAY THIS AND THAT AND IF YOU GO BY COMMON OPPONENTS YOU SPLIT WITH POK. AND V WON BY 30, AND NFA LOST TO POK. BY 2. THAT IS WHY WE PLAY THE GAME
Iona has dominated all but Peekskill this year> Peekskill has a great team let’s hope for an IP/Peekskill rematch in the finals to determine who’s the best team in NY!!
Didnt Iona Prep blow out Newburgh? If my memory serves me that was the coach that said “Iona Prep was avery quick team, quicker than he expected.” Then Jayden(the dope) stated that Iona Prep wasnt quick or fast or some stupid comment.
Anyway, this was a year when MV “WAS” overrated, no need to go to Oregon when you cant beat a team from Newburgh!
Ionaprep,
Im an NFA fan and NFA loses that game last night 8 out of 10 times. maybe 9. But to compare the NFA that lost to Iona earlier in the year to the team today would be foolish. NFA has improved leaps and bounds from that matchup. 8 out of the 12 kids on the team are underclassmen and the whole starting unit are juniors. They are a very unselfish team that played there hearts out last night, especially considering the size advantage MV had. NFA had Peekskill down by 17 and lost by earlier on and you guys lost to peekskill. NO WAY Iona blows out NFA right now, NO WAY!
MY BOYS ARE THE BEST THEY GOT CHEATED ( POINT BLANK ] . THERE IS NO WAY THEY PUT 2 SECONDS BACK ON THE CLOCK !!!
BUT THEY HAD A GREAT GAME . I LOVE ALL THE SENIORS & THE ENTIRE TEAM ! SHERROD WRIGHT IS AMAZING SO PLEASE STOP HATING ! REMEMBER AT THE END OF THE DAY THESE ARE KIDS AND THEY PLAYED THERE HEARTS OUT ! MOUNT VERNON “OVERRATED” COME ON DAWGG ! LETS BE REAL . NEWBURGH GOT A LUCKY SHOT . MOUNT VERNON LOST WAS A HEARTBREAKER ! BUT GOOD GAME NEWBURGH YA’LL PLAYED HARD . CONGRATULATIONS
Jmoose, I’ve changed my mind! I hope to see IP/NFA game as IP will clearly dominate!
Jmoose, Do you realize that Iona starts 1 senior??? Do your homework, not even close to IONA’S level.
I disagree. Would Pope happen to be that senior? Or the big guy? Not even close to iona level? What kind of statement is that? NFA lost to Peekskill by 1 point (a game they blew) and you lost to peekskill. Your argument is flawed. I do believe NFA and Iona play in the early season every year so time will tell.
Good luck in the final.
Im sorry mv seniors had to go out like that with a one in a millon shot but i thought the clock with out and idk how the refs but so much time back on the clock but mv was getting cheated the whole game and that is that if anyone thinks different smd
mvfan,
NFA was getting mugged in the paint. Literally thrown to the ground on almost every posession. Lessane CLEARLY TRAVELED on the last posession so you tell me who got robbed? LOOK AT THE VIDEO! Lessane so blantantly traveled its a joke. You should be ashamed of yourself! Oh yeah, If hinds and lessane could have stopped Marcus Henderson just 1 time and Sherrod Wright could have hit 1 free throw then the game would have been over. You lost STOP CRYING!
mike:
you sound like you would make a great coach….maybe you should take over the mvernon program. you are a tool.
this was the worst officiated game ive seen.mt. vernon got a lot of non-calls.#3 is marcus henderson,he was a problem for mt vernon.as far as iona n peekskill to bad they arent around for a rematch.we have 8 juniors all comin back see you all next year.much respect to mt vernons program.and yes there are some ballers all over.N.B.N.Y. all day.
