Contest: The final ticket – GOT A WINNER

February
27

Update, 4:16 p.m.: It took a while but TZ football finally got the correct response to the two questions – Brian Browne and Todd Landers. Congrats. The free pass is yours. An email is on the way.

Update, 3 p.m.: This is it. There’s one free pass left to be had for Championship Weekend, so I’m going to make you earn it. Yes, it’s only good for free entry for ONE person (we had an odd number of tickets to give away).

This is a two-part contest. Read carefully.

First, a very difficult trivia question:

Sherrod Wright of Mount Vernon has a chance to become the latest player to win four Gold Balls. The only players who’ve ever done were on Mount Vernon in the last 10 years, including Dexter Gray, Michael Coburn and Jonathan Mitchell. Who was the first boys player to win four Gold Balls in Section 1 history?

And now, a photo contest…

Below is a picture of a trophy. Who was awarded the first of these from the County Center this week?

    Kevin,
Maybe I’m reading this wrong but I think you have a couple things mixed up. Please excuse me if I’m just having a reading comprehension error – its Friday afternoon after a long week of work. But, Jonathan Mitchell, Kevin Jones and Mike Coburn did not win 4 Gold Balls. All were 4 year Varsity players, but each lost in ‘05 to Geoff McDermott and New Rochelle. MV won 5 straight, I think, from 2000-2004, so the only guys who could’ve won 4 straight were 4 year Varsity players in the 2003 and 2004 graduating classes. Keith Benjamin and Dexter Gray may have won every year they played varsity, but I don’t believe either of them were 4 year varsity players. The only 4 year varsity players I know of at MV have been Ben Gordon, Mitchell, Coburn, Jones and Wright. It seems to me that Sherrod Wright would be the first 4 time gold ball winner, right? Mookie Jones won 4 gold balls I believe, though in class A.

If I had to guess, I would say Mookie Jones is the only guy to win 4 sectional championships pending the outcome of MV’s final this weekend. Its possible Hamilton in the mid-80’s or Tuckahoe in the early 90’s could’ve had a player or two. I’m not sure if either of those teams won four in a row, but they could’ve.

  28. section 1AA

    Mitchell & Coburn were on Varsity when they were 8th Grade…........ Mitchell: 06(senior), 04(Soph), 03 (Fresh), 02 (8th) Coburn: 07(Senior) 06(Junior) 04(Fresh) 03 (8th)..... I think Kevin only has 3…..

  29. Hoops fan

ahh, good point Section 1AA. But Brian Browne didn’t play varsity all 4 years did he?

  30. What?

    Iggy

  31. section 1AA

I think he was put on Varsity half way thru the Season from JV. Yes he was a member of Varsity the rest of the way his freshman year.
