Watch Mt. Vernon-New Ro live

If you can’t make it down to today’s Mount Vernon-New Rochelle game, be sure to tune in to our broadcast on LoHud.com, which begins with my pregame at 4 p.m.
I’ll be providing live play-by-play and commentary from the game, and answer your questions like last week’s Peekskill-Poughkeepsie game. That was a big hit, so I figured I try it again.
Tip-off is 4:15. But tune in for the pregame at 4 and I’ll attempt to recap Scarsdale’s incredible upset yesterday over New Rochelle, and provide keys to today’s game. Most of you will write New Ro off in this one after losing yesterday. But I wouldn’t do that so quickly. Stranger things have happened.

Its been a week since the big sit down between Section One and Westchester County. Any information at all ? The playoffs start in less than 2 weeks.
Mount Vernon, even with their Federation Championship teams, has always had a VERY hard time pulling out victories on New Ro’s home court. I’d love to go, but my kid has a game at the same time. I hope the lohud.com webcast is available to watch later. GO MV
New Ro is playing like a team possesed… Was the Scarsdale loss what they needed ot wake them up???!!! Wow, MV is not rebounding or playing any kind of Defense… New Ro looks like they want it more… Wow, you lose to Scarsdale and then beat MV the next day?! Kevin is Nostradamus
Got to give credit to New Ro. They played a great game. MV was out played and the were actually out coached. I feel Cimino is outstanding, but his game plan was bizarre.
Congrats to New Ro…
for all the wise basketball bloggers who said MV would run New Ro out of the gym..this is why you play the game….Not sure what the final stats were on rebounds but New Ro killed them off the boards. Cant’ blame Cimino for Sherrod dribbling the ball off his feet about 7 times down low, looked like he never played under pressue before. Good thing there were no Big East coaches in the house.
Space..you are right in saying that Sherrod’s play wasn’t a reflection on Cimino, nor is the fact that they were ice cold from the outside…. but why didn’t they press consistently? If you take away the constant pressure it will only play into the hands of the opponent.
New Ro played great ball. They out hustled MV..don’t want to take anything away from their victory.
NR shredded the press the few times MV put it on, so not sure that was a coaching misstep not to use it more. I just think NR played very well for most of the game – even despite missing some layups—while MV played very well in spurts only. But MV could never hold onto the momentum since their transition defense failed at key points in the mid 1q, end of 2q, and 4q.
How many times can a team get beat with the long baseball pass in one game?. Why didn’t MV at some point keep someone back to play defense. How many layups did New Ro get off the long pass?
Unforced turnovers, out rebounded, out hustled and New Ro leaking all night. New Ro even missed some easy layups. Good game by New Ro. They play again next Friday at MV.
Nice win New Ro – Coach Murphy and his players earned it.
The Iona Prep Gaels topped Saint John’s Prep by 32 in a sleeper. Voelkel, Carissimo, and Bonner played well, but the real action today was at the NR gym 2 miles away.
New power rankings:
1. Peekskill
2. Iona Prep
3. New Ro
4. MV
5. Stepinac
For the “common opponent” wingnuts, it appears as though A teams such as Peekskill, Iona Prep and Stepinac can play with MV.
Ohhh NOOO!!
So Mike in your mind because Iona Prep beat New Rochelle back in December, that means Iona Prep is better than Mt. Vernon. Well in your world I guess thats true. Mt. Vernon would play any of the teams you mentioned including “The Prep” ten times and beat them 90% of the time. Stck to bashing the section one referees… they are on to you.
Most importantly congratulations to New Rochelle and Coach Murphy… What a 24 hours, thats why they’re kids .. they’ll drive you crazy.. Great job !!
Croton beat Pville in a great game.
judge & Sileck were great but sileck aka “mr clutch” hit 2 foul shots down 1 with no time left
pleasentville plays some hard nose D. by far the best in B.
I’m almost remeber certainly. We never Lost to Sucky New Ro when Kevin Jones was here and I think only once when MIke Cobrne was here and he lost to them as freshman. From Kev Jones freshman year on I think we never lost to White Plains either maybe once. we need to get that Chip on our shoulder that we had last year that made all of Westchester Fear us. Hell we vhave 8 sr’s this year right? C’mon Bobby C. lets not pat ourselves on the backs too early after a little success. we want a NYState & Fed Chip fellas.
Pope had 17, Mike. What game were you watching? Gentlemen, Mount Vernon is down this year. That does not mean they are not the best team here. They are but they are down. Iona Prep could beat them.
iona prep stop gasin yourselves up and schedule a game agaisnt a worthy oppenent
Class C,
Please re-read the 2nd line on the vision exam chart. I said, “play with” – not better or win. Besides, I am not into “common opponent” theory because variables change from one game to another. Iona beat New Ro by 38 almost 2 months ago, but a rematch would be much closer now because Coach Murphy changed his rotation and his team is vastly improved.
If you like Section 1 refs (who don’t work in the CHSAA), there is no way you will ever be enlightened about calls, non-calls, judgement, technique, or refs sucking up to public school coaches for higher rankings.
Guru,
Pope did have a quiet 17 against a very weak Saint John’s Prep team tonight, but Voelkel and Carissimo played better on both sides of the court.
Guys this should not be about Iona Prep-
New Rochelle should be commended for a great win over a power program like Mount Vernon-
In the grand scheme of things for MV it is not the end of the world- They will still be a top seed in section 1 and still have every reason to think they can make it through the Federation- Playing at New Rochelle is always tough.
MV should win next week, but the AA final Section 1 at the County Center between MV and New Ro should be a classic.
Mike,
Remember New Ro is the Jekyl and Hyde of AA… Don’t forget about the other teams in the playoffs…
statesman,
NR is a Jekyl and Hyde team, but NR and MV will play for the Section 1 AA gold ball.
Iona P…well said and classy. This should light a fire in MV land. I kind of think those SNY victories got to their head and took New Ro lightly. We will see what happens next Friday when they play.
MV lives and dies with the play of Sherrod Wright and that is their weakness. That is why I beleive a more balanced team like Iona Prep is more dangerous. The sum is greater than its parts. Its a simple theory: Bronner + Carrisimo + Pope + Voekel + Lyde + Mack > Wright.
And is should add “i” before “e” except after “c”. Last post should read “believe”. Lol!
Mike, there are good officials in Section One that don’t work in the CHSAA…
Point taken on the re-read. New Rochelle probably could have beaten any team in the state tonight.
Class C… lets take it easy with beating any team in the state. It was a nice win, but chill out. New Ro wouldn’t be a team like Rice …EVER! So I guess Scarsdale could have beaten any team in the state the other night when they beat New Ro…
I’m sorry Take it Easy, I should have said any public school team. Get over it, They had to play at the top of their game to beat the premier public school program in the state. You CHSAA are so full of yourselves
ok fair enough.. so tonight New Ro would have beaten Lincoln, Jefferson, Boys &Girls? All public school teams they could face if they got out of the section.
New Ro played great.. but lets keep it in the right perspective. It is a rivaly game. Many times in any sport rivaly games bring results that are shocking.
These comparisons take away from the accomplishment on the actual court
BTW.. I agree for the most part with everything else you have said. Mike is an old school CHSAA fan who is trying to be partial but is full of it. He thinks Iona Prep is the best team in the country…According to Mike.. Iona could match up well with Oakhill
If you can handle MV full court pressure than you can play with them! They want to cause havoc and get turnovers! When that is not happening you take them out of what they want to do! Iona, New Ro and Peekskill can all beat MV on any given night because of their guards ability to shred pressure!
MV state champs
MV will rebound because they always do, but New Ro does have a chnage to win the section 1 crown.
i was at the n.r. and m.v. game and i must say that n.r. played a almost flawless game. do i think they can play like that every night no but they did last night. i still think that m.v. down the road is the better team, from the steals to m.v. poor shot selection to n.r. out hustling was evident who wanted it more
NEW RO GOT LUCKY!
AND WE PLAYED LIKE TRASH NO URGENCCCCCCCCCCCCYYYYYYYYYYYYY WAS DISPLAYED BY US NO TOUGHNESS, NO RESPECT FOR THE NATURE OF A RIVARLY, NO LEADERSHIP, NO HUSTLE, NO GRITTINESS, NO ROUGHNESS, NO PRIDE FOR WHO WE ARE, NO HOOD REPIN, NO RESPECT FOR THE TOWN OF MOUNT VERNON, NO ENERGY, AND MOST OF ALL WE DIDN’T HAVE THE FIGHT TO WANT TO FIGHTTTTTTT!!!!!
KINGHTS PLAYERS AND STAFF Y’ALL OWE US BIG TIME!!!!!!!!!!. IF WE CAN’T BEAT THEM IN FOOTBALL WE D$%M SURE BETTER NOT LET THEM JOIN US AS THE ELITE IN BASKETBALL! AND LOSING TO THEM IS NOT A GOOD LOOK!
MV AllDay,
In ‘05 New Ro beat MV with Kev Jones, and Coburn on the team…As well as Lowe, and J Mitch…
Stop being bitter.
IT WAS ALOT OF LUCK NEW RO! IT WILL NOT HAPPEN NEXT FRIDAY WE WLL RIGHT OUR SHIP. COACH C BETTER HAVE A TALK WITH THEM ABOUT BEING WHOLE LOT MORE PHYSICAL. AND MORE URGENCY AND THE GAME WILL BE A BLOW LIKE IT SHOULD.
LET’S GO!
LET’S
KEV AND MIKE WHERE BABIES THAT YEAR AND LOWE COULDN’T MAKE A JUMP SHOT TO SAVE HIS LIFE!!
WHEN SHANTY ROB. WAS THERE IT WAS DIFF.
AND FOR J. MITCH HE NOT TOUGH AND THAT WAS ALWAYS THE KNOCK ON HIM!
NEW RO MISS MORE LAYUP THAN THEY DID JUMP SHOTS THE BASKTBALL GODS WHERE LOOKING OUT FOR THEM BIG TIME! THEY GOT LUCKY ALL DAY
Kevin,
A very nice story on the NR-MV game; good front page photo too.
New Ro made most of the hustle plays and hit the floor multiple times. We don’t keep stats for these actions, but they do help teams win tight ballgames at any level.
P.S. If New Ro played Iona Prep last night, New Ro would have won.
There goes Mike talking smack to get people riled up!! Your a CHSAA homer and you say New Ro would have beaten Iona Prep last night??? Oh and you don’t believe in the common opponent theory…yeah ok big Mike.
iona is playing the best basket ball in the area on a night to night basis
at this point i would have to say that iona more than likely would beat m.v. if they where to play. iona is the best shootin team in the area and they play very good def. i think those two factors is in there favor.the way played in n.r. would be a 12 to 20 point loss in iona. and i’am not taking anything away from m.v. program or n.r. i’am just saying that who’s the best rebounding team out of the three? who’s the best three point shooting team out of the hree? who has the better big men of the three? who plays the best defense out of the three? who has the best guards out of the three? who has the better coaches out of the three? if all three teams leading
did not play who you think would win?
Take it easy, take it easy.
I am a CHSSA and Iona Prep homer, but give NR its due. They would have topped just about everyone in our region last night. I don’t base this opinion on common oppo theory, but on the way New Ro actually played for 32 minutes.
Relax about new ro beating Iona last night last time I checked those teams played already and well….we know how that tunred out
I honestly think that Peekskill is the best shooting team in the area. Brickhouse, Thomas, Watts, Simmons, Gooding, Smythe, Wagner, and Clark are all great shooters. That, + their athleticism, is the reason why they hardly ever loose. Todays game against Newburgh will be interesting though.
Go Get’em NEW RO!!! Never mind what those recruiting, fake High Schools do! Iona, Rice, or any of them! They are just decorations. Kids on REAL high School teams are the REAL DEAL!!!
Hey Ed,
Your boy Mason tried the “fake” high school out for a season. Wasn’t happy about playing time so now he is “Real—ly” at New Rochelle. You are NOT the real deal. Jerk.
GET’EM ED IS A JERK!
WHAT THE HECK IS FAKE H.S. SCHOOL, ARE YOU MAD B/C YOUR PARENTS DIDN’T SEND YOU TO PRIVATE SCHOOL OR IS IT THAT YOUR TALENT WAS NOT WORTH ANY1 WANTING TO GIVE YOU SCHOLARSHIP. STOP BEING A HATER!!!
THERE IS ALWAYS A CLOWN RUNNING AROUND
Just Listening (really) and PROTEGE of the fools, just a couple of a$$wipes who can’t see how recruiting is just a bunch of decorations. Who says that New Ro is ‘MY’ school. It was good to see them beat another REAL school. Nothing like Iona and even the old Portchester. Get off my board and don’t come back!!!
Hi, this is really nice post i like it so much
thank very much
