Scarsdale stuns New Ro

January
29

Boy am I glad I decided to spend my day off at Scarsdale this afternoon. I got treated to a shocker: Scarsdale 51, New Rochelle 45.

The Raiders came in with five wins and simply outplayed New Rochelle, putting a slight damper on tomorrow’s anticipated New Rochelle-Mount Vernon showdown.

Scarsdale led almost the entire game and took a 38-31 advantage into the fourth thanks to some stellar defense in the second and third quarters. New Ro clawed back and tied at 45-45 with an Antoine Mason baseline drive. But after a pair of empty possessions, Jack Detmer spotted up at the top of the key and nailed a 3-pointer with 40 seconds left.

New Rochelle drew up two plays after timeouts on the ensuing possession. The first was batted away with 19.7 seconds to go. After the next timeout, Greg Garfinkel came up with a steal before the Huguenots got off a shot. Garfinkel made a pair of free throws with 15.7 seconds left to seal it.

Was New Rochelle looking ahead to tomorrow? I don’t know if that’s necessarily the whole story. Surely, New Ro will insist it played an awful game. But I’d give more of the credit to Scarsdale. The Raiders were phenomenal on defense the entire game and Detmer made several clutch shots. They outplayed New Ro in every facet and forced the Huguenots into countless bad shots.

I said a few weeks back that, if Scarsdale gets into the Class AA playoffs, it will win upset somebody. After watching them today, I could see them winning two games. I’m serious. This team is a solid from top to bottom. It’s just given away games because of free throws and poor fourth quarters.

Now watch New Rochelle go out and beat Mount Vernon tomorrow.

  1. scary

wow! horrible loss for NR. I never saw this team having a chance against MV anyway, but scarsdale??

  2. Yup

Mt. Vernon will beat New Ro by 15+.

  3. Mike Hoops

    Imagine

Scarsdale an 18 seed vs 15 Ramapo = Win

Scarsdale vs 2 seed North Rockland = Possible Upset

    Scarsdale vs 7 or 10 (Arlington, ???)= 50-50 chance

Scarsdale in Final Four vs New Ro (??????)))

  4. Full Court Miracle

    Mike Hoops,

Dont get ahead of yourself. Every team gets lucky now and then. This game reminded me of the Disney Channel original movie, Full Court Miracle. Scarsdale just got lucky

  5. Mike Hoops

    LOngshot

    But remember Scarsdale has beaten

New Ro and Gorton, 2 top 8 teams

Plus they are in the best league, so nobody will scare them.

If they can get North Rock in Round of 16 watch out

  6. spacecadet

It really is not that shocking. I watched Scarsdale play 12 minutes of nose to nose basketball with MV on Monday and said to a few friends I would not want to play this team in a playoff game and take them lightly. Add that to New Ro’s occasional inconsistant results (Iona Prep for one) and of course an upset like this it’s possible. Yes MV was much stronger and just wore them down like they do most teams with the press and the depth of their bench, but there were sparks of fire in the Raiders that made it a good first half. The final score was a blow out, but it ends up being a good tune up for Scardale.

The results from tonight will have nothing to do with tomorrow, if anything New Ro will play more inspired game after this kind of loss. A few on this blog think because team A and C beats team B by by much different margins, then the game between A and C is predictable. (Hope that makes sense). MV/New Ro rivalry has too many intangibles to bet the farm on.

  7. shocker dad

I thought that New Rochelle was getting it all together after the early season blow at at Iona Prep. Who were those teams from other states that they were beating?

Maybe this means that Westchester teams can find better competition 5 miles down the road rthan leaving the state.

Mount Vernon should win very, very easily. If they do not, then all of section one is an absolute joke this year.

  8. 10801

as a new ro graduate i am embarassed. This should never happen….

  9. 10801

    *embarrassed

  10. bball

    Well haha

Not too nice to see bigoty is alive and well in Westchester and on this blog, but our free society allows you to say your words. You must be so very proud of yourself to figure this wisdom out all be yourself.

This is about kids, not about bigots like you.

Actually, the starting 5 Vs New Ro was majority not of the Jewish religion.

Do you have more wisdom to share now that your premise is wrong?

  11. haha

hahahahahahha dude relax stop trying to sound all sophisticated and stuff.
ur a funny guy hoops fan

  12. haha

    and its bigotry buddy
u got any more wisdom to share now that your spelling is wrong?

  13. statesman

I’m shocked, but a cheer was just heard in Pok

  14. rocket

New Ro was always overrated. I don’t know what anybody saw. They still have not beaten anybody. Ive been saying that all year.

I also have no clue why they’re ranked above P’keepsie. New Ro was better last year, PK brings back more talent and mind you they didnt even get to have Darryl Charles and Duane Clarke. New Ro is overrated, always has been. The last totally legitimate New Ro team was the 04-05 team with Geoff McDermott, Terrance Parkes and Ray Rice. By the way Geoff McDermott and Providence are doing pretty good. He got some nice revenge on Niagara Fall’s Paul Harris against Syracuse.

  15. Yup

Rocket, you have no idea what you are talking about. New Ro is better this year.

  16. Hoops 1

    Haha,

It’s you’re not your. To criticize spelling on a string such as this is petty. Get a life.

  17. Hoops 1

Oh and by the way. This unfortunately took all the steam out of tonight’s game. Too bad New Ro couldn’t hold up their end of the bargain. MV in a route tonight.

  18. and 1

simply put…. murphy got out coached and his players looked past Scarsdale thinking they could compete with Mt Vernon. Great win for Scarsdale and even better loss for New Ro who will now lose 2 straight going into the stretch run. Maybe they arent as good as people think.

  19. Hoops fan

    Hoops 1 and Rocket,
I completely agree with you both. I never saw it in New Ro this year. Kevin ranked them #4 all along without beating anyone. I’ve been saying for weeks that Stepinac, Poughkeepsie and maybe Mount deserve to be ranked ahead of New Ro.

This certainly does take some steam out of the game tonight. However, I’m sure it will still draw a crowd and i actually think New Ro will come out well do to the big let down yesterday. If they get blown out of the gym today, their season will take a big hit. It is at NR and I do think they’ll play well.

  20. wat

Is it possible Scarsdale is better than many think. I hear they were in the game for near 3 qrts with MV. Their point guard is one of the best around plus they have a good big man. They were banging it and came to play at MV. It’s not always just about the final score.

  21. Hoops fan

    wat,
I think you’re absolutely right. I think Scarsdale is better than they’ve gotten credit for. Scarsdale is always tough and scrappy. They seem to upset at least one team every year.

  22. HRS

Hoops, Hoops 1. Yes it is easy to bring it up after a loss to Scarsdale, but I was not sold on New Ro going way back to the beginning of the season. After the Iona blow out, I also felt that the win wasn’t a great quality win because this team is average. Scarsdale may be better than we think, but New Ro is suppose to be a top two team, so to lose in this spot is unacceptable. I don’t think tonight will be close. MV is way too powerful and they should run them out of the gym.

  23. Q

Some people don’t want to believe that teams like Scarsdale and Mahopac can play with teams like NR or PK. “YES WE CAN!”
    Ha ha ha

  24. BasketballJones

The key tests for Scarsdale are three big games on the road…tonight at Greeley and then next week at Mamaroneck and White Plains. They will need to win one of those plus defeat Roosevelt at home to qualify for the sectionals. Once the sectionals start everybody is 0-0 and the teams that finish strong usually make some noise in the post-season.

  25. rocket

    Yup,

Sorry, but you guys seem to be missing Simeon Marsalis and Markell Rice. They helped you out last year. PK lost two top players who were supposed to be back this year (one got in trouble and the other is in prep school). I don’t see anything special in this New Ro team. Who did the beat? Nobody special. I’m not saying they’re a bad team. Of course they’re a good team, but they’re just not as good as Kevin is ranking them. They are ranked #8 in the latest state polls. Thats a travesty to say the least.

  26. statesman

    Rocket,
Hopefully they get Clarke back for next year. That team will be something to see, Losing James will be irrepaceable though, I wonder who they’ll find to fill in… I don’t know how Mahopac got in the converstation but from what I hear about them they should be someone to have an eye on this postseason?

  27. Mike

Everyone had New Ro over Scarsdale and MV over New Ro. Now, we remember why the games are played.

    New power rankings:

    1. Peekskill
    2. Iona Prep
    3. New Ro
    4. MV
    5. Stepinac

Clearly, A teams such as Peekskill, Iona Prep, and Stepinac can play with MV – the city that invented basketball.

  28. Hoops fan

    Mike,
I thought you’re right that you have to drop Mt Vernon from the #1 spot now. I wasn’t at the game (though now I wish I was!) It sounds like Mt Vernon didn’t play well. I’m really surprised to hear that MV didn’t use their press that much – isn’t that what makes them great? I’m going to watch the replay so I can speak more knowledgably about the game.

  29. Mike

    Hoops fan,

The MV press has been famous since the days of Gus Williams, Earl Tatum, Rudy Hackett, Mike Young et al, but it didn’t work well tonight. In fact, MV didn’t play well at all. Conversely, New Ro was amped up and the team is much better than in December. Also note that Bill Murphy outcoached Bob Cimmino and had his team erady to play 32 minutes.

  30. 4,sq,miles,of,greatness

jayden step up 2 the plate what do you think happen

  31. wat

Anyone at the game saw that New Ro outplayed MV last night. MV was out rebounded, out hustled, did not get back on defense and committed too many turnovers. Each time MV appeared to be building momentum, New Ro did something to kill it or MV lost the ball themselves. 4 clutch free throws down the stretch by New Ro center Laurent (16 rebs)were the key for me. New Ro missed layups and chippies but got 2, 3 and 4 chances for putbacks often. New Ro’s coach and players did a great job. However a 6 point win is no knockout punch. Any number of things happening that didnt last night and the game “could” swing the other way. New Ro deserved the win. Enjoy because I don’t think it will happen again this year.

The refs must have done a good job, as there is no mention of them. That’s a sign of a well officiated game.

The way New Ro played yesterday was why I went see them play Iona. Who would have won, doesn’t matter as long as it was a good game.

  32. Mike

NR made the hustle plays that help teams win ballgames.

  33. NYC Hoops

A great win for New Rochelle. Mount Vernon is overrated anyway.
