How does this happen?

January
30

How do you lose to Scarsdale one day and beat Mount Vernon the next? Well, if you know anything about this New Rochelle team, you know that just about anything is possible.

What an incredible game today at New Rochelle. The Huguenots outplayed the three-time Class AA champs, winning 82-75 one day after losing at Scarsdale.

Most of you have already detailed how New Rochelle pulled this off: gutty defense, an electric Antoine Mason, clutch shooting from P.J. Torres, good interior play from Stanley Laurent, and New Rochelle’s ability to handle the press and outhustle the Knights.

This game will rank among one of the best season, right up there with Peekskill-Iona Prep. Today’s game had so much intensity and drama, and the fact we had two bitter rivals on the same court definitely added it.

What happens next? Is Mount Vernon still the clear favorite to win Class AA? Is New Rochelle too much of a Jekyll and Hyde team to really compete for a title? I think New Rochelle assistant coach Anthony Nicodemo said it best after the game:

“We changed the complexion of Class AA by losing yesterday — and then we changes the complexion all over again by beating Mount Vernon.”

It’s true. There’s so much uncertainty right now, not just in Class AA, but pretty much everywhere. And it’s what made this season so great.

Mount Vernon, just so you know, is still in line for a No. 1 seed in Class AA. That’s because North Rockland was upset today by Lincoln. Here are some other games from today:

Iona Prep 76, St. John’s Prep 44
Saddle River Day 36, Green Meadow Waldorf 34
Clarkstown South 59, Ramapo 44
Spring Valley 70, Harrison 54
Croton-Harmon 40, Pleasantville 39
Pearl River 78, Ardsley 63
Pelham 48, North Salem 25

Watch Mt. Vernon-New Ro live

January
30

If you can’t make it down to today’s Mount Vernon-New Rochelle game, be sure to tune in to our broadcast on LoHud.com, which begins with my pregame at 4 p.m.

I’ll be providing live play-by-play and commentary from the game, and answer your questions like last week’s Peekskill-Poughkeepsie game. That was a big hit, so I figured I try it again.

Tip-off is 4:15. But tune in for the pregame at 4 and I’ll attempt to recap Scarsdale’s incredible upset yesterday over New Rochelle, and provide keys to today’s game. Most of you will write New Ro off in this one after losing yesterday. But I wouldn’t do that so quickly. Stranger things have happened.

Scarsdale stuns New Ro

January
29

Boy am I glad I decided to spend my day off at Scarsdale this afternoon. I got treated to a shocker: Scarsdale 51, New Rochelle 45.

The Raiders came in with five wins and simply outplayed New Rochelle, putting a slight damper on tomorrow’s anticipated New Rochelle-Mount Vernon showdown.

Scarsdale led almost the entire game and took a 38-31 advantage into the fourth thanks to some stellar defense in the second and third quarters. New Ro clawed back and tied at 45-45 with an Antoine Mason baseline drive. But after a pair of empty possessions, Jack Detmer spotted up at the top of the key and nailed a 3-pointer with 40 seconds left.

New Rochelle drew up two plays after timeouts on the ensuing possession. The first was batted away with 19.7 seconds to go. After the next timeout, Greg Garfinkel came up with a steal before the Huguenots got off a shot. Garfinkel made a pair of free throws with 15.7 seconds left to seal it.

Was New Rochelle looking ahead to tomorrow? I don’t know if that’s necessarily the whole story. Surely, New Ro will insist it played an awful game. But I’d give more of the credit to Scarsdale. The Raiders were phenomenal on defense the entire game and Detmer made several clutch shots. They outplayed New Ro in every facet and forced the Huguenots into countless bad shots.

I said a few weeks back that, if Scarsdale gets into the Class AA playoffs, it will win upset somebody. After watching them today, I could see them winning two games. I’m serious. This team is a solid from top to bottom. It’s just given away games because of free throws and poor fourth quarters.

Now watch New Rochelle go out and beat Mount Vernon tomorrow.

More changes coming?

January
29

Journal News reporter Harold Gutmann had a story today’s paper about 13 cost-cutting measures that the New York State Public High School Athletic Association will be discussing at a meeting this weekend in Binghamton.

Among the issues:

– Cutting football from five classes to four – Restricting out-of-state travel to only bordering states – Using more centralized locations for state tournaments – Cutting the maximum number of scrimmages in each sport – Reducing the number of tournaments in each sport

The full list is available if you click on the story. I posted the list last week, much of which was met with harsh resentment. These will all be voted on this weekend, with each of the state’s 11 sections receiving two votes per proposal.

Harold spoke with Section 1 executive director Jennifer Simmons on Tuesday and she disclosed how the section would use its two votes for most proposals. She said her and the other Section 1 rep, Bronxville AD Karen Peterson, will vote against the out-of-state travel idea. There needs only to be a simple majority for a vote to pass.

In football, Section 1 has already adopted a plan to cut one regular season game out of its schedule. Basketball, and several other sports, will go from 20 games to 18 next season. And leagues in basketball will be based strictly by geography.

Power rankings

January
28

I went to bed a few weeks ago and, somehow, woke up in Fargo, North Dakota. That had to be what happened, right? How else would you explain all this darn snow?

Anyway, I finished shoveling the driveway (with help of a neighbors trusty snowplow), and wanted to post my latest power rankings. Remember, the updated playoff picture in Classes AA, A and B will be released during tonight’s Varsity Central Live show, which starts at 7:30 p.m. Matt Grossbard of Pearl River will be our special guest, and I’m sure he’ll be able to help us break down to Class A.

Be careful if you have to drive anyway. It’s pretty slipper out there. You’re better off staying indoors with a cup of hot chocolate and watching VC Live tonight at 7:30. Just a tip.

Top 10
1. Mount Vernon (11-2):
Winning the SNY Invitational definitely raises the program’s profile. But how good were Jefferson and St. Ray’s really? The Knights impressed many who tuned in to watch them live, and seem to be improving all over.
2. Peekskill (15-0): The road to an undefeated season has two major obstacles — Newburgh and Poughkeepsie. I’ll likely pick the Red Devils to win both games, although I wouldn’t be shocked if they lost one, or both.
3. Iona Prep (15-1): Do these guys still play games? It seems like the Gaels never play. The rest will be a good things going into Sunday’s showdown with Bishop Ford at home. It will likely be the first of two meetings between them.
4. New Rochelle (12-3): Beating Glendale (Missouri) last week would have kept the momentum going into Friday’s clash with Mount Vernon. But I still think the game has plenty of juice. New Ro has the talent to compete with the Knights. It’s just a matter of them coming out mentally prepared.
5. Poughkeepsie (13-2): The setback to Poughkeepsie had plenty of positives in it, specifically the play of Brandon James and Dayvon Whitaker. Those two players alone could carry them far in the AA playoffs. Both were impressive.
6. Stepinac (10-7): In some ways, this season is already a success. The Crusaders beat Mount again this week and are likely bound for the CHSAA playoffs. With Ford and Iona Prep clogging the way to the title, a playoff win would cap a great season at Stepinac.
7. North Rockland (11-1): The Red Raiders just keep on winning. They likely won’t get much respect until the playoffs, and I’m sure there will be some calling for a first-round upset. Coaches I’ve spoken to, though, believe they’re just as good as New Rochelle and Poughkeepsie.
8. Mount St. Michael (13-5): The Mounties slide down the ranks a little, mainly because they haven’t really had a quality win in a while. They’ll have their chances in the final weeks of the season, including a home meeting with Iona Prep.
9. White Plains (8-7): The Tigers get to now travel down to Mount Vernon and New Rochelle, two teams it lost to at home last week. Both will likely end in defeat for White Plains. As long as they compete, they’ll be fine in the long run.
10. Gorton (11-6): The return of Corey Green will certainly change things. Gorton has league games left against Roosevelt and Lincoln, which will both be tough. If the Wolves can sweep, they’ll be home in the first round of the playoffs.
On the brink: Yorktown (10-3); Mahopac (13-2); Arlington (10-5); Lakeland (11-2).

Grossbard to appear on tonight’s VC Live

January
28

Pearl River standout Matt Grossbard will be our special guest on tonight’s Varsity Central Live, which will start at 7:30 p.m.

We’ll have Matt answer my questions and yours for about a half hour. We’ll find out his college plans, playing in front of the area’s best fans and the emotions of the past few weeks following the death of a teammates mother. Tune in for me.

On the show, I’ll also unveil the up-to-date playoff seeds for all four classes. I’ve gone through every teams schedule and made the calculations. You’ll be interested to see where certain teams might fall. We’ll also be posting the list on this blog after the show for you to check out and discuss.

The updated rankings will be on the blog by the afternoon, too.

Correct me if I’m wrong…

January
27

Let me start off by stating that I am crazy.

Despite a heavy workload — and the maze our Varsity Central website can be — I plan to go through every teams results and attempt to forecast the Section 1 playoff seeds.

I did it last season for each conference in the final month and it created a lot of discussion. I’ve already started to tackle our website and have pulled out each teams game-by-game results. Of course, some scores haven’t been reported to The Journal News this season, so I expect I’m missing some of it.

Hopefully you folks can help me out with that. Today I started with Class B — because those are the people who tend to ask me what the seeds look like most often — and put together a spreadsheet that will allow me to update it easily. I’ll go through Classes AA, A and C over the next few days to gather the information.

Here are the team-by-team results that I’ve gathered so far. Please, if there’s anything missing or incorrect, please either post a comment or send me an email at kdevaney@lohud.com

As you probably know, games against ALL New York State teams will count towards the seedings. Wins against teams in your own conference or lower are worth 4 points. You get an extra point for beating a team in a higher class, and two points if the opponent is two above (a Class B team gets 6 points for beating a AA).

Those are all added together and divided by the total number of games vs NYS opponents. The higher the index, the better the seed.

Again, if something isn’t correct above, please email me (kdevaney@lohud.com). Even if it is correct, I encourage coaches to email to confirm.

Monday’s games

January
27

Exams week is usually pretty slow, so there won’t be much to update until Friday. There were a handful of games yesterday, including Mount Vernon. Here’s how things went:

Mount Vernon 86, Scarsdale 51: Scarsdale managed to keep this respectable in the first half, trailing by only 12 at the break before the Knights stormed out in the third. The Mount Vernon bigs played well again. Vaughn Allen had 22 points and Kadeem Dinham added 10. As coach Bob Cimmino noted over the weekend, if the Knights can get ‘teens’ production in points and rebounds from Allen, Dinham and Odayne Clarke, they’ll be pleased. Sherrod Wright scored 18 points and Jabarie Hinds had 12.
Lincoln Hall 56, Briarcliff 42: The United controlled this game from the start, overwhelming Briarcliff inside. Sir Aaron Taylor had 19 points and 24 rebounds. Should Taylor get All-County consideration? I definitely think so. He’s been consistent all season had several games like this where he’s simply unstoppable. By the way, the Bears were without coach Matt Evangelista, who was home with wife, Diana, after she gave birth to their first child, Luke Anthony, on Sunday. Congrats to them. Matt is the third coach I know of who’s had a child during this season, joining Dave Masterson of Nanuet and Ted Repa of Byram Hills.
Rye 64, Kennedy 49: A little surprised by this one, simply because of the margin of victory. Rye got out to a hot start and never looked back. Remember how I said yesterday that Kennedy would be able to contain Matt O’Neill on the perimeter? Well, 30 points proved otherwise. However many votes O’Neill gets for Tri-County won’t be enough. I might take him over any of the good Rye players of the last eight years.
Solomon Schechter 55, Children’s Village 54: Nice win for Schechter, which is still without injured Max Wein. Aaron Prince had 21 points, including four 3-pointers. David Teich had 17 points.
Martin Luther King 61, Keio 54: A quality win for MLK, which could be a factor in the state tournament in Class D. Todd Landers had 14 in a balanced effort for the Tigers, who can use 8-10 guys on any night.

There are only a couple of games this afternoon:

St. John’s Prep at Fordham Prep, 4:15 p.m.
TBA at Carmel, 4:15 p.m.
Martin Luther King Jr. at Blind Brook, 4:30 p.m.
Rye at Byram Hills, 4:30 p.m.
St. Edmund at Mount St. Michael, 4:30 p.m.
Solomon Schechter at Clark Academy, 4:30 p.m.
Edgemont at Ardsley, 6 p.m.
Childrens Village at Keio, 6:15 p.m.

If you go to any of these games, please drop us a line and give us your thoughts.

To see ticket sales revenue and proof of how much money was turned over to Section 1, click here to download the documents: 2008-section-one-settlement-documents.

I also had a story on how basketball coaches find the drills they use at practice. Some borrow. Others admittedly steal.

As you might have heard, Syracuse freshman Mookie Jones will miss the rest of the season with a hip injury. I spoke to Peekskill coach Lou Panzanaro last night, who said this injury has bothered Jones since last season.

And finally I helped report on the story on the Dover father who came out of the stands on Friday night and punched two Haldane players. The man is due in court tonight.

Dover-Haldane incident

January
26

It’s been a hectic day, most of which I spent trying to track down information regarding Friday’s fight between Haldane and Dover.

If you didn’t see the story online today, check it out here. A Dover father rushed onto the court and allegedly punched two Haldane players after a scuffle started involving his son. The man, Gildo Lacourt, was arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a minor.

The players, who are 15- and 17-years old, was doing fine, according to Haldane athletic director Susan Reid.

According to a parent in the stands, Lacourt had been loud and vulgar the entire games. When other spectators asked him to gain control, he allegedly yelled back at them.

Once Lacourt was taken off the court and out of the gym, the game was stopped for 20-30 minutes before being resumed.

A very bizarre and unfortunate incident, to say the least.
