New Ro tops Herndon

December
30

John Calarco had 20 points and eight rebounds to lift New Rochelle to a 70-63 win over Herndon (Virg) in the Benedictine Capital City Classic Monday in Richmond, Virginia.

Nice bounce-back win for the Huguenots, who dropped a five-point heartbreaker to strong Calvert Hall team in Saturday’s opening round. New Rochelle will play host Benedictine on Tuesday at 4:45 p.m.

All the Huguenots need to do is shoot the way they did against Herndon. They made 20 of 38 shots and were 21 of 25 from the line. Travis Wright was 6 for 6 from the stripe to go with 14 points and six rebounds. A.J. Burton scored 15 points.

According to the New Rochelle basketball web site, Antoine Mason hasn’t played in the two games down in Virginia. I’ll try to find out why.

Nobody on that team respects Murphy the head coach.

Mason isn’t as good as his name is but let’s call a spade a spade he should gotten minutes before they had a major issue like this and the parents got involved.

Notice QB Johnnie Mcghee has no stats either. He left the team after he was in a starting role due to the coach.

Time for a Change at New Ro????

  2. Hoops fan

Can you fill us in on what the issue with Mason is at NR?

  3. Nutcracker

Maybe murphy isn’t willing to let mcghee do what he wants like the football coach does?

  4. ironman

So why was mason not playing.and parents got involved…sounds like what happenened at iona in 9th grade. not starting because of two much 1 on 5 play and never giving the ball up on the break.

  5. 10801

    nutcracker,

mcghee made split seconddecisions on his own against the coaches orders. Coach D does not let him do whatever he wants.

  6. Nutcracker

Well the fact that he goes against the coach is an extreme lack of discipline and is why he shouldn’t be starting. He is not that elite player to just take matters into his own hands

  7. 10801

I agree it is a lack of discipline, but if you have ever met coach d you would agree with me that I am sure he will fix the problem.

  8. NRTHY

Maybe Mason should pull a gentile and get an apartment in Tuckahoe.

  9. 6789

What about Ryan Powers and Janna Chukumerije?? They played last year…

I Heard Travis Wright almost quit too.

  10. Know of what you speak

nutcracker, 10801, mcghee didn’t “go against” his coaches “orders”. he , as is every placeholder, was told that if you think the kick is going to be blocked, or there is a bad snap, pull the ball and yell “fire”, essentially going for 2 unplanned. I agree that there has been times where it appeared mcghee took advantage of those “directions”, but by no means did coach d, or any other coach for that matter, tell him or any other placeholder, “keep the ball on the block no matter what”. that would just be plain stupid. as far as him not playing basketball, the rumor mill has it that he wanted to go to florida with the cheerleaders on their annual trip, instead of being with the basketball team for that week. I heard coach murphy said “be a cheerleader fan or a basketball player, not both”, and mcghee chose to be a cheerleader fan.

  11. Nutcracker

He was never letting that ball be kicked

  12. 6789

It’s actually the Mt. Vernon game week that Cheerleading leaves for Florida. Mcghee had the plans paid for before being coerced into playing basketball.

Your gonna lose to Mt. Vernon either way… so you might as well let the kid go on a trip he had planned before he said he would play basketball.

  13. 6789

Just like 10801 will tell you when he was on the field when Mcghee pulled these shanagans vs JJ a couple years ago. He made up his mind before leaving the huddle, this time he didn’t have as much luck as in the past. Don’t tell 10801 he doesn’t know what he is talking about. Mcghee ruined the season past two years with the fumble and pulling the snap this year.

Know of what you speak…. see with your theory there actually has to be a bad snap or pressure. It was basically a point after and Mcghee was up before the snap even got to the TEE.

  14. 3246

soo nutcracker who are you anyway tht u kno so much about something ur not even apart of becasue if u watch the game over again there was a tremendous amount of pressure from monroe so the kid pulled it off the tee…last year against jj he did it on his own but this year there was a lot of pressure

  15. IONA

so 3246 so was there pressure on all those kicks that mcgee has done that 4 . he is selfish n wants the limelight on himself. and that cost his teamates a hot at states twice .unlike us at iona who won the championship.

  16. Nutcracker

He was pulling it off the tee regardless of pressure, what’s the matter with you? He wants the shine, can’t be champs like that

  17. 5

    nutcracker

how are you so sure of this it seems like u kno everything were u inside the kids brain while he did tht cause i like to see what u would hvae did if u were in tht situation u probly never even played in a meaningful game before anyway

  18. Nutcracker

For one he said in the newspaper he told the one kid he was pulling it and was going to throw it, come on, wake up.

  19. Nutcracker

Also whether or not I played a meaningful game means nothing. When players do what ever they want u end up like the jets with favre making poor decisions. That’s why they have coaches, the difference between good QB,s and bad ones is decision making.

  20. Nutcracker

The ball not thrown is the one that makes him a good QB

  21. 10801

As much as i think mcghee made the wrong decision, please lay off of him. This is a junior in high school. Everyone one of us made mistakes in high school. He had no malicious intent making that play. He simply felt he had a better chance to win the game than the kicker. In new rochelle that problem has been sorted and and is done with, and mcghee didn’t cost the game 2 years ago either. So please stop with the bashing.

  22. New Ro Fan

So after all this what really is the deal with Mason? Is he still on the team?

  23. what happend?

What is coach murph doing?? There isnt enough talent on the new rochelle roster besides the always great DEPARIS BANKS. What happend to JV Captains Joey Goodrich and Eric Watson. Eric doesnt play enough and Joey should at least be on the team. Also freshman star Deon James is making a comeback Get Ready MOUNT VERNON
