Weekend’s action

There was plenty of basketball action outside the Slam Dunk tournament. Here’s a quick look at the highlights from the last two days:
Sunday
Albertus Magnus 60, Clarkstown South 41: Now who’s the best team in Rockland County? I bestowed the honor on South based on the fact it was returning so much talent and was in a final four contender in AA. Albertus, though, proved how good it really is with that victory. The Falcons, who recently lost to Tappan Zee in the Pearl River tournament final, got 16 points from Floyd Leroy and 15 from Flynn McFadden to win its own tournament championship.
Manhattan Center 69, Stepinac 58: It’s hard to call this a bad loss for Stepinac because I know nothing about Manhattan Center. It’s going to be interesting to monitor the Crusaders the rest of the way. My feeling is that they can beat anybody — and lose to anybody, too.
Saturday
Calvert Hall 69, New Rochelle 64: The Huguenots ran into a very strong Calvert Hall squad in the opening round of the Benedictine Capital City Classic in Virginia. Travis Wright had 22 points and A.J. Burton contributed 11 points and nine rebounds. The Huguenots played Herndon.
Mahopac 61, Yorktown 59: Tim Taps wins the game with a buzzer-beating, giving the Indians are hard-fought win and a tournament title. I knew a few people at this game, including Journal News staffer Justin Jones, who left the game raving about Yorktown center Keith Thomas. Another friend said he’s a “definite Division I prospect” if he keeps maturing. Thomas is a player I’ll have to see very soon.
Greeley 61, Sleepy Hollow 43: The Quakers rebounded from a tough loss on Friday night to Yorktown. Matt Townsend had 16 points for Greeley.
Albertus Magnus 62, Clarkstown North 47: Wins like this will surely give the Falcons a boost in seedings come playoff time. Class B teams get an extra two points for beating AA teams. Magnus has also beaten AA Suffern and Ramapo.

If the Valhalla coach was suspended for Saturday’s game, is he allowed to call the coaches at half time to discuss strategy? Wonder what Section 1’s take is on this.
Also, if you play Valhalla, don’t be surprised if their coach has one of his buddies refeering the game. Saw 7 games at the County Center this weekend and he sat with the refs the whole weekend. As they say, perception is reality. Even if a ref makes all the calls the way he sees them, this situation just doesn’t look right.
New Rockland Rankings:
1. Tappan Zee: have to put them #1 after they beat PR and Albertus.
2. Albertus: probably will end up being the best team in Rockland in the long run.
3. Nanuet: suprising start to the season doesn’t seem to be a fluke.
4. Clarkstown South: most overrated team in the Section.
5. Pearl River: rumored injury to Grossbard could really hurt their season.
AM just keeps it rolling. They dominated vs. South and North. The only time south had the lead was in the opening seconds at 2-0. There was even an awesome dunk by Floyd Leroy. All this without the usual starter Francis Lopez who is out for a while with a foot injury I’ve heard. I think that the coach for south was seriously out coached and they did not know how to react. Albertus played a hell of a game.
I believe Magnus is the #1 team in Rockland. Not to knock TZ who shocked everyone in the PR Tournament. I just want to see how their young team responds after that run. Also AM has more experience- therestarters have played together for 3 years on varsity
If I was a Falcon fan, I would be concerned about Lopez being out. That is a huge lost. He is an underrated player who always provides toughness and a double-double daily. Many forget to mention him b/c people always start with Leroy and Mcfadden. As a fan of Rockland basketball, I hope he gets back quickly and gets ready for that Class B tournament which should be one hell of a bracket.
One last thing- AM dominated South from the start. I was surprised to see how flat South was, especially considering how much hype they were receiving. I agree that they maybe overrated in Section 1.
Do not judge a team by one game. South is a solid team and neither overrated nor done. Yes TZ is clearly #1 now. Let the league play begin, the season is young and much more to be done. Sadly most of Rockland teams mentioned will not face each other again this season, rematches would have been good. Have to wait for 2010 for multiple matches
I agree TZ was underated and played very well in teh Pearl River Tourn. I don’t know if they are Rockland’s best team however. South I think is incredibly overrated. They are very one dimensional and there “big” men lack big man skills and the ability to create. Although, Lopez is out Magnus managed to dominate south in the tourny. I agree he is an underrated player, but Magnus picked up the job with Dounahue and Kieran Brennan who played pretty well. Although these two lack the ability to finish, while Lopez consistantly does.
Francis being out is a concern for Albertus but Coach McFadden showed some confidence in junior keiran brennan inthe tournament and it payed off as he played pretty well. Albertus does not need Donahue and Brennan to save their season as they have other solid players to lean on. All they need is for them is to keep other teams off the glass and clean up around the rim on offense. They won’t be counted on much on offense.
ROC ON,
There is still some solid Rockland basketball to be played as Albertus will play both Nanuet and Pearl River 2x. Should be some exciting games coming up in January.
Agree bball man maybe they are not but TZ sh get the 1 nod …... did the head to head necessary at this point to get it…. for now then will have to continue to earn it. What about PR maybe they are in fact over rated and one dimensional
