Peekskill survives

December
29

Peekskill knocked off a feisty Gorton team, 66-47, in tonight’s Slam Dunk tournament championship at the County Center.

Don’t be fooled by the score. Gorton is here to win and actually took a 37-36 with 2:50 to play in the third on a Corey Green 3-pointer.

It might have awoken a Peekskill team that looked exhausted, uninspired and in disarray offensively for most of the night.

Ralph Watts had 24 points for Peekskill, and Daquan Brickhouse had 15 points, seven assists and six rebounds.

Chris Ranglin, Corey Green and Jiman Villafuerte each had 10 points for Gorton.

The Wolves were down by as many as 12 early in the second quarter but held Peekskill to just nine points in the period. They had the ball in the closing seconds but never got a shot off.

All-tournament: Brian Voelkel, Iona Prep; Corey Green, Gorton; Chris Ranglin, Gorton; Ralph Watts, Peekskill and Darien Thomas, Peekskill.
MVP: Daquan “Superman” Brickhouse, Peekskill

Peekskill will have a very hard winning states. The favorite in class A is Jamesville Dewitt, the team that ended Peekskills season last year, and might be better this year. JD just beat Bishop Ford by 17 tonight, Brandon Triche went for 35 points. I dont know if Peekskill has anyone who can guard him, and will have to have their best game to win up in Glenns Falls assuming they make it there.

peekskill was definatly exhausted from the iona prep game…however peekskill is peekskill, and they always find a way to grind it out and pull out the win…

Wow crazy MV game but not a bad 3 point loss, thanks for the link. It could have gone either way in the end but way too many fouls called by the refs throughout the game. That technical foul Wright got obviously hurt as well.

    Kevin,

Saw your article regarding Gorton coach Rizzo. Very nice article but their are a few things that need to be pointed out that was not mentioned in the article. I am not taking anything away from Rizzo has done in a short time since taking over the program but: Long island Lutheran was missing their star Harris and I believe another integral player? That being said one might suggest with those two Gorton would have been blown out? Secondly, I love coach Mayfield as a coach and a person but that is the worse talent he has had since he became the coach of WP – I mean forget that their jersey says WP their talent level says average Class AA team this year! However, he will win a few later in the year he should not because of his coaching ability. Lastly, you want to talk about recruiting in the catholic schools? Well, Yonkers has an open enrollment to their high schools! The kids can be recruited out of I believe 6 or 7 middle schools. What other district can choose from those many middle schools in Westchester? Zero! The only two schools that will never get those players are Saunders and Yonkers High because of their known reputation of being academic when compared to the others! I do not take anything from coach Rizzo he has put alot of time in and is a good basketball mind that comes from a good pedigree of basketball. But, before call him the next legend let’s see how he does consistently against Peekskill, New Rochelle, WP and MV…
