Class B state final: Rye vs. Oneida

Posted by: Kevin Devaney Jr. - Posted in Uncategorized on Nov 30, 2008

Final: Rye 16, Oneida 12.

MVP: Kyle Ramalho. He rushed for 136 yards on 24 carries despite a potentially broken rib and a shoulder that “popped out” in the fourth quarter.

Third quarter
Update, 5:49 p.m.:
End of third. Rye leads 16-6. Going to be in the booth during the fourth quarter to talk on the broadcast.
Update, 5:33 p.m.: I don’t know if they kept a record for penalties in a state final. But whatever it is, Rye’s going to break it. Three more on that drive has killed another series. It’s still 16-6 with 3:02 left. But a sloppy game for the Garnets.

Second quarter
Update, 5:01 p.m.:
Rye nurses the clock in the final minutes and goes into the half ahead 16-6. Going on our broadcast now to provide the halftime report.
Update, 4:46 p.m.:
Jack Kelleher booted a 29-yard field goal — after consecutive Rye penalties — to make it 16-6 with 6:34 left in the half. Not a good series for Rye, which lined up to go for it on fourth-and-inches at the Oneida 2. A false start penalty and then an illegal formation moved the Garnets back.

Rye has seven penalties for 45 yards. Not uncommon for the Garnets, really.

First quarter
Update, 4:34 p.m.:
End of the first quarter and Rye leads 13-6. This game has sort of a weird feel to it. Rye is moving the ball at well and controlling the line on offense. But it’s being put on its heels a little up front on defense. I love how O’Callaghan was a limited contributor on offense all year and is now being utilized. Dino Garr for president!
Update, 4:31 p.m.: What an incredible pass by Connor Eck, who’s showing no effects of a sprained ankle that knocked him out of the game last week and limited him at practice. He threw a rocket to Patrick O’Callaghan in the back of the end zone for a 15-yard score.
Update, 4:14 p.m.: It’s 7-6 Rye on Cole McCormack’s 28-yard touchdown run. It appears Rye is going to control the line of scrimmage, at least based on the opening five minutes. That drive was all Chris Lavelle and Renan Zoffoli on the left side of the line.
Update, 4:11 p.m.: Shaky start for the Garnets, who allow Ryan Kramer to return the opening kickoff to the 28, setting up a touchdown to make it 6-0. Rye’s special teams have been so good this season, especially kickoff and punt coverage.
Update, 4:06 p.m.: We’ve kicked off. Not many Rye fans here. Rick Carpiniello actually went down to Rye’s cheering section and discovered that the weather was so bad coming up here and many people are still driving. Got to love Central New York!

Pregame
The clock is ticking. Kickoff will be shortly (although late since the Monroe-Orchard Park game went a little long).

You can do any of the following three things:

Watch the game live on Lohud.com/vcsports1. The picture is great here at the Carrier Dome because we have a hard wire internet, not wireless (which slows the bandwith).

You can follow the detailed updates on our Gameday Central blog, brought to you be the great Rick Carpiniello.

Or you can follow along here and discuss the game. I’ll be providing updates but not quite with the frequency or detail as Carp. I will have some analysis and be willing to answer questions you might have.

    Kev,

Will you be broadcasting basketball games this year like this?
    How many?

  2. WingTGuy

    Go Rye….

  3. WingTGuy

The ball was tipped, how can that be inteference?

    Are HS rules different?

  4. WingTGuy

Rye looks like Nyack with all these false start penalties

  5. WingTGuy

    Kevin,

    Weather update.

Looks like freezing rain mix almost all the way home tonight. Looking at the weather maps it looks like the thruway trumps route 17 for drive home.

Pay the tolls, 17 can be nasty in icy weather.

    Safe home to everyone.

Looks like Rye has this game under control, but I would have said the same thing about Monroe Woodbury.

  6. wolfie

The upstate officials are at it again that’s now 11 penalties against Rye to 2. (and this is for the winning teams) Last year it was 14-4 it seems like this goes on every year….somethings not right….

  7. Rye

Rye is killing themselves with all these penalties

  8. behindthebench

    kevin,
Oneida is running the lonesome polecat.

  9. Rye PG Mom

Where is the sound on the webcast?? Or atleast pan to the scoreboard. Oneida just scored and we can’t tell how much time is left

  10. scary

what happened to rye’s secondary? double coverage on two passes and the guy is still left wide open.

  11. WingtGuy

    Congrats to the Rye Garnets.

3 in 4 years. Has to be the best program in NYS.

    Safe home everyone.

  12. wolfie

Rye played a very sloppy, uninspired game! There outstanding talent and depth allowed them take this game that they almost found a way to lose. Oneida had a Great QB who was MVP on offense and defense and not a whole lot more. If Rye’s sharp and their usual game it’s 3 touchdowns. It looked to me that Oneida was the team that’s played in the dome 5 times.

  13. Brentwood Nation

Oneida lacked a solid running game to compete with Rye.Their passing game was very good, the qb was execellent & kept them in the game. But you really gotta give it to Eck,a 10 grader winning the state championship.Way to go…

  14. BIGJOE

I WONDER WHERE THE OFFICIALS ARE FROM ,I KNOW THAT ONEIDA WAS ONLY 30 MILES FROM SYRACUSE, DONT WANT TO SAY FAVORITISM BUT RYE JUST DOES NOT PLAY THAT TYPE OF A GAME , THEY HAVE BEEN A DICIPLINE ORGANIZED AND EFFICIENTLY TRAINED TEAM,, THEY GO TO THE DOME AND ALL OF A SUDDEN THEY BECOME DIFFERENT??????, SORRY , I WILL NOT ACCEPT THAT BIG JOE

  15. Rye Guy

There were alot of bad calls, I felt that the refs really were hurting rye with alot of questionable calls but Rye rose above it. Great game congrats guys.

  16. BIG FAN

Congratulations to Rye! Outstanding job to win two in a row. Nice try Croton, you got there.

Nice job to all the Secton 1 teams who made it up the ladder. Maybe next year we make it to the top with more teams.

Thanks Kev for giving us a forum.

  17. Peter Shift

Just got back…well done RYE!! Final Score Rye 16 and Oneida+Ref’s 12 pts. Can’t say the zebra’s didn’t try. Called 3 late hits on one drive in the 3 qtr. One ref was injured and had to get treatment at half. He pulled shoulder for reaching for the flag so many times. Three big plays of the game.

    1. Eck’s TD strike as he was going left and thru against his body. It was a complete bullet and he had DT closing in hard. Threw it to O’Callahan in same endzone his brother did year prior. Also both Eck’s thru Game winning TD passes of state final.
    2. Eck holding steady in pocket on a 4th and 12 and dumping one off to Kyle. He ran for the whole 12 yards and drove to get the first down. Kyle I think lost one football game in 4 years and won 3 state titles,......not to bad of HS career.
    3. Late hit on Oneida. They had just got a first down on Rye’s 27 yard line but was called back for late hit. They seemed to be building some momentum at that time. Next play had illegal motion and started 1st and 15 and couldn’t recover.

  18. Football Mom

RYE GARNETS 2008 STATE CHAMPIONS !!!

  19. exit 9

i believe that the Eck’s both threw the Game winners to O’Callaghan in each of the state games.

  20. jim

Just Back…Forget about the penalties…the better team won, but my theory is that this group of officials from Section 7/10 was just in way over their heads. The game may have been just a little too fast for them….Back to back Class B NYS Championships, three in four years, 5 trips to the finals in 6 years…wow! 25 straight wins, 47 of 48, 71 of 74 and 57 straight against Section 1 teams…the thing about this run of glory is that tonight’s game may not be the exclamation point….Rye will be very very good for at least the next couple of years and maybe more. The one component they won’t have is Kyle Ramahlo…the only loss of his four year career was a game in 2006 they trailed 19-0 to Albany Academy with 8 min. left and almost got the equalizing 50 yard field goal on the last play of the game, losing 19-16….47-1 with three NYS titles as a Rye Garnet…everyone thinks of him as a fullback, but he is a shut down defensive tackle to boot. Every player on this team is a stud, but Kyle is an all-timer at Rye. His performance tonight was a prototypical one for him and was the cherry on the cake for his brillant career. And as for Dino Garr…it wasn’t too long ago that the fans were screaming for his head, second guessing everything he did, crying that he couldn’t win the big one and couldn’t beat Harrison…what a crock of spit that turned out to be. Dino, you are goining to be a tough act to follow…someday…Dino is 60 years old now, but he still has the gusto to go out there and do the job in a way only he and his sidekick Tom Maloney can do it. Maybe the move to Class A will provide the motivation. Has any team or coach won section titles with the same school in three enrollment classifications…A B and C? It was a long bus ride home tonight…sorry for the rant, but these were my thoughts while looking out the rainy window.

  21. western

    little league champs!

  22. aj

    Rye refs as usual

  23. jim

Western…In the great hey day of boxing, it was not just the heavyweight division that got the ink and the acclaim. If HS football was boxing, the middleweight division would be class B. Sugar Ray Robinson, Gene Fulmer, Carmine Basilio and then Marvin Hagler, Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas “Hit Man” Hearns…just to name a few… were great champions that weren’t heavyweights. Some of the great boxing champions also stepped up in class on occasion and beat fighters from heavier weight classes. Billy Conn, the great lightheavyweight champ, almost stepped up and beat the “unbeatable” Joe Louis once.

  24. Footballgiant

    Jim:

Great post above. What a kid like Ramahlo accomplised should be recognized and praised. You are very close to the program and your insight is outstanding. It is nice to hear how you feel about Ramahlo and hopefully his career isn’t over. Congrats to you and the Rye football team. Great job…once again!

  25. section 1 w/ some sensee

Congrats to Rye! Very exciting time for Rye, big accomplishment 3 championships in 4 years. But now they may move from B. The lower classes have been dominated by teams in the past. In the lower classes it seams easier to build up a dynasty like Rye’s. They however have done this in class B, when others have done it in C/D. That should show that im not trying to take away from Rye. I am just excited to see if they can keep this status in what has been a very competitive class A. Unfortunately Rye moving up would put a huge hole in the state playoff look for Section 1. Section 1 was in my eyes, and probably most peoples as well, the second best section in “mainland” NY with Rye and 2nd place Croton, not to mention New Ro losing by a yard to MW who lost a close game, Nyack Playing Burnt Hills tough who gave Sweet Home more of a fight than Acquinas, and Tuckahoe also making the semi’s. Buffalo(area) did there part taking out the rest of the state. WOW ! 4 champs for Buffalo area (section 6) including the two large classes AA, and A .

Good job Garnetts, cant wait to see who gets classified where, and how the leagues change. then we can start arguing about next fall

  26. Switz

Anybody have a top 5 list of best coaches in Section 1? I think you have to go
    1. Dino Garr – Rye
    2. Skip Volantie- Dobbys Ferry, Somers
    3. Tony Dematto- Roosevelt, Somers
    4. Cas – Nyack
    5. Group of Dobby’s coaches who won 69 in a row ( I think it was 3 or 4 coaches during that span)

  27. Maybe

If you go by most wins in Section 1 its
    1. Tony Dematto
    2. Dino Garr
    3. Skip Violante
    4. Joe Casarella
    5. Dick Rote- Pleasantville

THis site show the win totals for NY state thru 2004 season
    http://www.section4football.com/nystatecoachwins.html

  28. garnet10580

    Switz & Maybe:

The Top-4 are slam dunks. Number 5 would be sourced from Castellano (Nyack), Triolo, Jr (Harrison) or Rote (Pleasantville). Depending on the criteria used it would be either Castellano or Triolo, Jr.

    As for the Top-4:

If you update the career wins through the just completed 2008 season the order would be: DeMatteo (272), Casarella (242) Garr (237) and Violante (227).

If you rank them by State Championships won: Garr (3), Violante (2), Casarella & DeMatteo (1 each).

If you rank them by State Tournament Appearances: Garr (7), Casarella (6), Violante (4 or 5) and DeMatteo (2 or 3)

If Dino Garr continues to take Rye deep into the State Playoffs coupled with Somers and North Rockland not advancing, it won’t take long for Garr to overtake Joe Casarella, while catching and passing DeMatteo could take the better part of a decade and may not ever happen.

For consistent program excellence, I take Coach Garr meaning no disrespect to the other legends.

  29. wolfie

I’m sorry I really don’t wish to harp on this official thing. No matter what it was a great and historic (getting redundant!) season and state title for Rye. However, watching that game, I was just getting madder and Madder at the officiating. How is that in the last 3 title games for Rye (all wins) they get penalized more then the losing opponants on a 3-1 ratio. THAT’S UNHEARD OF!!

There were numerous ‘precedure and formation penalties” Now Rye, I assume, has been running these same formations and offensive “man in motion plays” all year and when they get to the dome…they are now Penalized for it????
I was blogging with a Forks fan both last year and this year and even he mentioned that last year and this Rye was excessively penalized and Forks, who ran the option, had not one single holding penalty called. THERE’S ALWAYS HOLDING Or BLOCKING IN THE BACK ON OPTION PLAYS at least sometimes anyway!!! Three years running now is no coincedence and a disturbing pattern seems to be emerging? I just wish someone would look into this, because eventually it’s going to cost Rye or sec 1 or an “EAST ” team a title, and may have already!!!

  30. wolfie

I wish to clarify that I don’t think this is any kind of organized or official policy to look closer at downstate teams, or Rye or sec 1. I’m not being paranoid or a sour grapes “HOMEY” However, there could very well be simply a false perception that runs around in the club that makes up the State Officials and “loose” talk that results in officials calling it closer with some teams or sections then others. This is very possible and unless it’s pointed out it will continue, and may get worse! Statistics, facts and patterns simply don’t lie!!

  31. 2 cents

Garr is awesome. He is extremely smart and knows his football.

Violante transformed Dobbs. He started the dynasty, 01 state finalists, 02 state champs, 03 state semifinalists 04 state champs.

Since then dobbs went 11-1 in 05, 12-0 in 06, 11-1 in 07 and 8-1 in 08.Its been said that with the talent dobbs had last year he would have guided them to a state championship. He is a very good coach.

Dematteo and Cas are legends. All legends but you have to go with Garr, he teaches fundamentals like no other

  32. CHSFL

Congrats to Rye you won the ship and didn’t even play that good a game.

Someone said definitley best program in th state.

    HAHA wow no way.

great job! Ramahlo is a monster

  33. slacrosse

    Wolfie,

GREAT WIN and agree that Rye scores AT LEAST another 1-2 TD’s without the excessive penalties. Even in certain Section 1 games too many penalties have held back or taken the “MO” out of the team’s great efforts.

  34. Coaches

    Garnet 10580.

Based on your #’s DeMatteo (272), Casarella (242) Garr (237) and Violante (227) Rote (191)

Garr is only 35 wins behind DeMatteo. So once DeMatteo retires Garr would probably have to coach an additional 4 years say going 9-2 each of the 4 years. Picking up an additional 36 wins to pass DeMatteo as having the most wins in Section 1. This of course is assumming Garr and DeMatteo are even when it comes to wins while both are active.

Skip was amazing coach and was around most of the time without any state games. Rote retired before Section 1 started states.

Anybody have loses so we can see winning %.

I think Garr and Skip win that battle over other 3 coaches in winning %

  35. jim

Had a chance to look at Rye game on the web after seeing it in person yesterday….I’m not saying Rye didn’t deserve any flags…did see guys move on the illegal procedure calls…heard a couple of unsportsmanlike penalties were for things said on the field…can’t argue these. The first interference call was a joke. You can clearly see the ball deflected then the receiver get hit…bad call. I did see one instance where a Rye defender was clearly tackled/blocked from behind that was a no call and an Oneida guard start to stand up before the snap…again a no call. One of the roughing calls was also a joke as Kramer was running out of the pocket and was hit as he released the ball. I do not mind a closely called game, but the officals have to make calls both way’s, and the interference call was blatently wrong(not one of the officals saw the deflection…everyone else in the Dome saw it). Rye won so it really doesn’t matter, but next year it may be your team up there folks, and after having seen this horrible officiating two years in a row, someone from Section 1 better make sure our teams get a better shake up there in the future. The Syracuse blog had a Section 10 poster that said this crew was the laughing stock of the north country and had the rep for “over officiating” especially in big games…..Is that what we want in a NYS championship game? Section 10 is not exactly noted for great football and this game may have just been too much for this crew. These guys usually don’t see teams like this.I don’t think that there is a subversive plot to “get Rye” or section 1 teams…these officals were just overmatched and pathetic.

  36. Waller

I’m pretty sure Troilo has won 2 state championships. But, I would not consider him one of the best coaches in this area. He feeds off the talent that came through harrison. Between the years 1997-2006 he fed off some great talent. Both times he won the state title he had had the best player in the state on his squad. Maldonado obviously, and Weininger, the 6’6 310 pd. wisconsin commit. If any of you watched the 2006 rye-harrison game youd know he wasnt that good of a coach. Harrison was bigger, faster and flat out the better team. But terrible play calling and a few lucky breaks for rye led to a 19-18 victory.

  37. Crank

    Waller,

I completely agree. Not only the 2006 rye game, but the 2007 rye game as well. At that point in the season Rye was no better than harrison. But Troilos awful play calling and coaching led to a 27-7 loss.

  38. observer

I noticed watching Harrison games through the years that Artie’s coaching style tends to play “not to lose” instead of “playing to win.” Garr plays to win.

  39. Chapter

I agree with waller. I watched Harrison-Somers and let me tell you it was a butt whoopin. But Harrison just played so tight. Its the way Artie coaches. They play uptight and not loose. that was also the game where i decided rob lombardo was the best RB in section 1. If it werent for him, Somers would have won that game 28-14 instead of 38-3.

  40. 65

Harrison-Somers was a joke. Somers whooped them all day, much worse than rye did. That had to be the most embarrassing day for Harrison fans in a very long time. Harrison never loses 38-3, they are usually the team winning by that amount. It was a wake up call to Artie that his program is not untouchable.

  41. jim

    Crank and Waller

First, no coach wins a state title without talent.
Second, Weineger was recruitted mostly because he had the size to go along with talent. I’m not saying he wasn’t a stud, but my feeling watching Harrison play that he was no better in HS than a couple other guys on that Harrison line, but he obviously had the height/weight to make him intruiging prospect.
Third, while Harrison did have an excess of talent in 2006…so did Rye. Archibald is dressing as a freshman at Navy. Antigo is a starter at Georgetown. Welling played at Tufts.Fulmer is playing at St. Lawrence and Eck is the starting QB at Hamilton. TJ Smith at Ohio State and others are college lacrosse players. Rye had some talent too. Harrison, in my opinion, lost to another very talent laden team that year albeit in heartbreaking fashion.
Fourth, I fully agree about 2007. People forget that Harrison was a slight favorite last year entering the game, but Rye certainly used the 27-7 win and the win over Sleepy Hollow the previous week to springboard to a tremendous season while Harrison kind of went downhill quick starting with their second half collapse against Rye and culminating in their shocking defeat to unheralded Lakeland.
Fifth, as far as Artie goes…he definitely needs to re-invent himself. He knows his football, but he has the look of someone on the edge. He is a great coach, but I think the pressure he puts himself under is written all over his face and body language, rubs off on his kids, and the kids just don’t seem to be enjoying playing for him…that’s from an outsider, but many of my Harrison friends have been saying the same thing.

  42. Sideline

Artie need sot stop running his kids into the ground. Harrison football just isnt fun anymore. The kids practice way too long and way too hard.

  43. wolfie

Jim well said and very diplomatic. Probably more diplomatic them I am that’s for sure and I’m not as big a Rye Fan as you. I’m a sec 1 fan and a great admirer of Rye, Harrison, Dobbs, edgemont, NR and Nyack teams with a history of committed excellence! You said it right, next time it could be your team from sec 1 that gets the business and it should be looked into. I wonder if box scores of all sec 1 teams in final games could be obtained and reviewed to see if it’s just imagination or if in fact there is a pattern.

  44. wolfie

By the way I saw it not just 2 years ina row but 2005, 2007 and 2008 at the dome and 2007 in Kingston

  45. Husky

Harrison is simply going the through the stage Nyack went through in 05,06, and 07. But then in 08 they lost by a point in the state semi finals to a team that only lost by a TD in the dome. Harrison will be back, soon.

  46. Luke

Harrison vastly improved from the opening loss to somers. It was harrison, not Somers, in the end that gave Nyack a run for their money. Even in what is considered the worst husky team in the last 10 years, they still win their league.

  47. garnet10580

    Coaches:

In making the DeMatteo/Garr comparison, one would have to make assumptions on when either or both retire from the sidelines – both unknowns. You know that DeMatteo will coach through 300 wins so that’s another five or so years. If Garr coaches for another five years (to age 65), he could only gain a maximum of three to five wins a year on DeMatteo. With Rye going to “A” for 2009, Garr will still win 70% of his games, but will not advance consistently to the 13-game season and repeated state finals, so the “rate of gain” will slow down.

Garr’s career record at both Rye (27 Years) and Westlake (6 Years) is: 237-60-3 or a .798 winning percentage.

    Waller:

Yes, Art Triolo, Jr and the Harrison Huskies have two (2) NYS Football Championships to their credit.

No, IMHO Weininger was not anywhere near the best player in NY State his senior year. He had size, but may have been a bit soft. Never did see or hear of his accomplishements at Wisconsin. Did he ever start? At other times and in other seasons I did hear about the accomplishments of Bernstein (Edgemont/Wisconsin) Dimmie (Sleepy Hollow/Hofstra) and Maldonado (Harrison/Ohio State & Maryland). Granted lineman don’t get press like backs do.

Congratulations Coach Dino Garr and the 2008 New York State Class B Champion Rye Garnets ! ! ! !

  48. Ern

Weininger was considered a top 10 NY prospect, thats still very good. But not #1.

  49. Coaches

    Garnet10580,

How old is DeMatteo? For some reason I thought he had a good couple years on Dino. That is why I was thinking Dino would outlast him by 4+years. So during this run of 74-3 Dino’s has increase his winning % from 74% to 80%...that is IMPRESSIVE! I think hands down you have to put Dino as the best coach in Section 1 history. Year in and year out the players change but the one thing that stays consistent is Dino and the pride, hardwork he instills in this players.

Great job Garnets!! Lets go for the threeeeeeepeat!!!

  50. garnet10580

Don’t know DeMatteo’s age, but with 300 wins in sight he gets younger every year!
