Game Balls: Nos. 7-5

November
10

The latest installment of Game Balls has arrived. The player and coach of the week will be announced on Wednesday’s Varsity Central Live, which airs at 7:30 p.m. The great Anthony Davis of Nyack will be our special guest.

Game Balls
7. Tremayne Williams and David Ugarte, New Rochelle:
The Huguenots’ ability to get pressure on Carmel with a four-man pass rush made the blitz a dangerous option. That’s where Williams and Ugarte come in. New Rochelle did an incredible job disguising and mixing up their blitz packages with these two. Williams and Ugarte each came up with three sacks apiece as New Rochelle overwhelmed the Rams up front for a 34-0 win in the Class AA final. Williams also caught a touchdown and Ugarte had an interception and 115 yards of offense as New Rochelle claimed its third straight sectional title.
6. Joe Collins, Stepinac: With star running back Maurice Easterling out with a sprained ankle, it was up to Collins, the veteran quarterback, to carry the load in Stepinac’s CHSFL AA quarterfinal with Kellenberg. Collins did so with a career performance, throwing for 301 yards and two touchdowns on 19 of 27 passing in the 42-21 win. Collins did a great job keeping his composure and confidence in the first half after Kellenberg tied the game at 14-14 and seemed to have momentum. He capped a long scoring drive with a touchdown pass to Josh Powell, and then ran for a score just before the half as the Crusaders got by with Easterling.
5. Rye’s defensive line: There’s only so many ways I can say how special this Rye defensive front really is. William Ramsey, Topher Triano, Ryan Rossi, Malcolm Walker, Brendan Nagle and Matt Foristel did a phenomenal job dictating Saturday’s Class B championship as Rye came up with five sacks for minus-62 yards and an interception in the 35-7 win. Ramsey had two of those sacks (and cornerback Brogan Matthews had one) as the Garnets captured their sixth straight Class B championship. With this group leading the way up front, this team should at least get to defend their state title in the Carrier Dome in two weeks, if not win it all again.

The next three will be posted tomorrow night. Any guesses as to who they are? How about the player and coach of the week? I think the player of the week will be somewhat of a surprise. The coach is a tough call, too.

  1. Football Mom

Aaron Walker graduated last year from Rye – the lineman is Malcolm Walker.

  2. Rye Fan 08

Ryan Rossi plays center on offense – Rob Santangelo is the man on defense that also needs mentioning. Throw in John Santoro, Pat O’Callaghan and Kyle Ramahlo for good measure.

  3. 10960

joe collins only threw outs the entire game.. no one covered the flats.. but thats okay he is MIGHTY JOE COLLINS

  4. Franco's 624-CUTS

    I’m Guessing That

Anthony Davis And John Castellano of Nyack are

(Player and Coach of the week)

    No.1 game ball
    Go Indians,Got2Represent Da ROCK!!!
    P.S. Good Job Men

  5. CHSFL

10960 – Whats your point? Thats how you play the game. Its called taking advantage of the other teams weakness.

  6. GoNewRo

I’m hoping that New Rochelle High School QB Johnny McGhee, who threw 3 TD strikes (22 yds, 42 yds and 36 yds) in the end zone and NRHS head coach Lou DiRienzo who devised a masterful game plan to defeat a very good Carmel High School team are named player and coach of the week.

  7. Catholic School league

10960- you must go to Fordham or White plains. Little Jealous that you have never beaten him huh?

  8. rye

not only is the defensive line deserving of mentioning, rye’s ENTIRE defense deserves a shout out. This team has serious talent, with the brains in O’Callaghan to execute the game plan dino devises. Ramsey is an absolute nut and plays with reckless abandon. Keough is one of the most athletic safeties and is an exceptional run stopper.

  9. WingtGuy

I would think that McGhee from New Rochelle has to be on the list.

It seems to me that Castellano has to be somewhere in your top 2 or 3 coaching performances this week.

It is funny that Dino Garr never gets mentioned. Rye is always prepared and motivated for their games. No hype, they just perform.

Seems to me that means they are getting great coaching.

Maybe Dino Garr is the coach of the week.

  10. Rye Fan 08

    Rye

Yes you are right I did forget to mention Donald Keogh and Luke O’Malley who went in for Triano most of the last game. The entire defense deserves the honor.

  11. GARNETS94

Triano got benched in the First quarter for getting a flag on another late hit. Luke O’Malley / Brian Pickup and John Greer played end for the the rest of the game. Kyle Ramalho started at D-Tackle with Angus Aronstein and Brian Levinson playing the majority of the gam when Rye got up big

  12. section 1 w/ some sense

I’d love to See Kreamer and Lacetti as a tandem get gameball 4 (might be taking away from some others though) but those two laid it out there for their team. Kreamer even came in on D when the team started facing injuries and recovered what could have been a huge fumble. Kreamer’s one INT was a result of extreme pressure even for a screen pass and probably bad judgement but the kid was trying to make a play and Mancini it think it was mad an amazing play. Lacetti showed what he will be next year with an amazing performance of guts and heart.

Give Davis Game ball #1 with an assist from a his D that got Ossining off the field quick in the first half and stepped up when it mattered that final pass a smaller defender knocked the ball away from a great leaper in Lucky

  13. WingtGuy

I agree with Kreamer and Lacetti sharing a game ball. They were both unbelievable.

Lacetti will be a force next year. He was this year.

Kreamer was under pressure all night. He made some great throws. Mancini almost got the pass before the one he picked off. He made a great read and jumped the screen pass. They may have gone to the well one to many times.

  14. Black on Track

Great choice awarding a Game Ball to the Rye defensive line, but I agree that you could have given it to the whole Rye defense. Matt Foristel played a great game, had a back-breaking interception, and won the Outstanding Lineman in the Section Championship. But that award could also have gone to Ramsey, Nagle, Ramalho, or Santangelo, they all played great! Rye’s whole defense swarmed to the ball and just shut Pleasantville down. They are really taking it to another level in the palyoffs!

  15. 89

I saw rye play pleasntville. So much depth on the D-line. That kid brian levinson is a back up and hes good, hes also 6’2 235 pds. great size. now you can imagine how good the starters are.

  16. idk

How good is williams ? I never saw him play. If he is as good as advertised. Was he one of the best players on new rochelle team last yr with was stacked with talent. ?

  17. Common sense

What type of defense does Rye play? They are great. They penetrate very well, swarm to the ball & are so aggressive on the QB trying to pass or run.

  18. Question Devaney

What is that advertisement to the right of your blog, “Larry’s Weight Loss”??!!!!!???

    It is FOUL!

    Is that Borat?

  19. wolfie

Rye generally plays a 4-4-3 with VEY active and aggressive linbackers. They mix it up though, and have a variety of looks and Blitzes. Just very well coached, with kids that know the system and swarm to the ball very well. They can be Vunerable to counters and up the gut however…but not often!

  20. 10925

joe collins is absolutely amazing.. the way he takes his three step drops or the way he hands the ball off to maurice is outstanding. he really should be a top canidate for best qauterback in the division. Congrats joe we all know that you know what it takes to get it done and to win…... hand maurice the ball.

  21. Crusader24

Leave the kid alone. You’re all getting on Collins as if he’s the one who calls the plays, or as if he’s the one who gave himself a game ball.

Grow up guys. His biggest responsibility is managing the offense, and he does a hell of a job at it.

  22. Right On

Looks like Rye is not using the dreaded R & R system regularly…LOL

  23. Jax

    1. Anthony Davis, 2.Ray Nichols

Lacetti Super 11 next year, called it

  24. purple rhino

I agree Coach D and McGhee of New Ro need to be there as well as the New Ro offensive line – they have dominated

  25. tyft

Harrison will win the state championship next year.

  26. football

    hahahaa keep dreamin tyft

  27. ???

Why was mahopac able to defend againts the pressure of Tremayne Williams and David Ugarte and carmel was not ? Just a question.

  28. 10801

    ???,

To answer half of your question New rochelle did not use the strong safety blitz vs mahopac, so they never had to protect against williams

  29. Catholic School league

Two weeks ago against Xaverian, Collins threw 19-28 for 250 yards and 2 TD’s. Last week against Kellenberg, he threw 19-27 for 300 yards and 2 TD’s. Guess what? Easterling didnt play in either game.

  30. 99

way to let him no zuck

  31. patriot rein

east fishkill would have given newro a better game, it seemed carmel beat jay and they had nothing left , and new ro played very hungry

  32. Big Fan

No excuses, New Ro was better prepaired for the game then Carmel. Coach D had a great game plan and the kids executed them to the “T”. Lets hope they can continue the momentum and beat LaSalle and get revenge for last years semi-final game agains MW. If New Ro playes the way they have been, look out.!!!!

  33. # 17

New ro will get ran all over….

  34. naldrhs1985

Ive been watching rye football for 36 years and there have been great teams in the past but this team is a joy to watch if they dont pull an albany acadamy 06 hopefully they will win it all

  35. Joe the Plumber

    #17

I dont think so, New Ro will play for State Championship this year. But that team from Syracuse area is serious. Orchard Park, ouch!!!!!!

  36. Scooter

Hey Naldrhs why do you say so? I thought last years team rise from mediocore team to amazing state champs was a real year to remember. This year has obviously been great but in all the years of rye football what is your specific reasoning to loving this year o so much. Im just curious? Its been great but still three more games to go baby.
