Section 9 finals

November
3

If you’re team is playing for a championship this weekend at Mahopac, it’s definitely worth knowing what awaits the following week in the state tournament.

Here’s the Section 9 championship schedule. Unfortunately, theses games aren’t at one location like Section 1. We’re lucky to have the set up we have.

Friday
Class D

Chester vs. Eldred, at Middletown H.S., 7 p.m.
Class A
Cornwall vs. Wallkill, at Dietz Stadium, Kingston 7 p.m.

Saturday
Class C
Sullivan West vs. Ellenville, at Dietz Stadium, Kingston 3 p.m.
Class AA
Monroe-Woodbury vs. Newburgh, at Middletown H.S., 7 p.m.
Class B
Highland vs. New Paltz Dietz Stadium 7 p.m.

(Note: Section 9 champ gets bye to state semifinals. Section 1 will face Section 2 champ, which will either be La Salle or Schenectedy, which meet on Friday at 7 p.m. at Colonie High School.)

For those interested in watching (or scouting) those games, check the Section 9 website for directions and more info.

Based on state rankings and previous results, the most likely champions are:

AA: Monroe-Woodbury is 9-0, ranked No. 3 in the state and beat Newburgh Free Academy, 31-15, a month ago. Beware of Newburgh, though. It rallied from 16 points down to stun Minisink Valley in the semifinals.

A: Cornwall is a heavy favorite to win its third title in a row. It’s only loss was to Monroe and it beat Wallkill, 35-18, in Week 4. Cornwall is No. 3 in the state, one behind Ossining.

B: Both teams are 6-3 but Highland beat New Paltz, 26-0, two weeks ago. Neither is ranked in the state.

C: Sullivan West is undefeated and beat Ellenville, 41-19, in Week 2 and is ranked 13th in the state before this past weekend.

D: Tough one to call. Chester is 6-3 but only beat Eldred, 8-6, three weeks ago. Two of Chester’s losses were to Sullivan West, another was a forfeit for a brawl.

Can the class c section 9 teams compete with the skill in section 1?

    Connor Nyack,

Corwall and Wallkill are the A teams from section 9.

Cornwall is ranked number 3 in the State and have a great team. They will be a big test for Nyack or Ossining.

You can find information about Section 9 at the websites Kevin mentioned in his post.

Section 2 has Burnt Hills and Bishop Manginn in Class A. The winner of that game has to probably play Indian River (Section 7/10) before they get to Dietz against the winner of the Section1/Section9 game.

Both teams are undefeated but Burnt Hills is favored from what I have read. They seem to be big and have a solid running game.

The Times Union (Albany) website has information on Section 2 teams and matchups.
