Practice report: Ossining

This is third installment of my tour of practices as we gear up for Section 1 championship weekend. It’s the last one for today.
I was reminded today how much I love going to football practices, which is amazing since I absolutely hated practice when I played.
My last stop of the day was Ossining, which was under the lights on the turf. Ossining’s practice, like Croton, had a very urgent pace to it. When I got there, the scout team offense ran through Nyack’s plays as they prepare for Saturday’s Class A championship. Then coach Dan Ricci turned up the tempo even more.
For a good 10 minutes, Ossining sprinted through various formations and plays. They literally ran back and forth to the huddle. Instead of giving the defense 12 seconds in between plays, they had six, at the most. And, with few exceptions, the linebackers made the right calls, they got in the right position and they made the stop.
Nyack in real-time on Saturday will be bigger and faster than Ossining’s scout team. But they won’t be moving quite as fast. Against a Wing-T team, half the battle is recognizing the formation, the motion and interpreting the play before it happens. If you’re one step out of place, it’s a 10-yard gain.
Ossining learned that on Saturday night when Yorktown stormed back from a huge deficit and nearly unseated the defending sectional champs. Watching that game today, I saw an Ossining team that got pushed around up front and tried to make too many arm tackles in the open field. Against Nyack, that’s not going to work.
Ricci and the Ossining players, like always, oozed confidence. I think they realized they dodge a huge bullet against Yorktown. They feel like they’re the favorites and Saturday was a reminder that it’s not going to be given to them. Fox Lane gave the O that reminder last year in the regular season with an ugly loss. Saturday was this year’s reminder.
I took a few minutes tonight to speak senior lineman Matt Dubray, a third-year starter at center and a star at defensive end. Here’s what he had to say about the state of the defending champs entering the weekend:

Ricci might get it, but damn it’s going to be tough! I think Ricci gets it. Having bad games in the playoffs don’t help though.
Nyack 04’ – quarterfinals Nyack 42 Becon 0; Semifinals Nyack 14 Brewster 7; Final Nyack 20 Harrison 19; State quarter Nyack 20 Wallkill 21… They hit the damn wall
Ossining may not be as talented as that team but they’ve got the hype of that team and they MAY hit the wall in the final
Ossining 07 – quarterfianls Ossining 52 Foxlane 12or13; Semifinals Ossining 45 Yorktown 44; Final Ossining ??? Nyack ???
Like i said before this Ossining team is no where near as talented as that Nyack team, but the situation has got to be somewhat the same… I don’t know if Ossining is tired or not but for a guy to run for 385 yards on you, you have to be exhausted…
HAS OSSINING RAN OUT OF GAS? WILL NYACK BE ABLE TO OVERCOME THESE INJURIES?
My advice to both teams is drink 5 hour energy.
I think Ricci edges Cas in this one! Ossining will capitalize on Nyack’s turnovers. Nyack will be on the wrong end of the “bad calls”. I’m not saying the refs will be for Ricci don’t take that out of context. Sometimes Refs make bad calls and I think nyack will be on the wrong side of those bad calls… Ricci rides the bus and Brundage gets 35-40 carries for 80-95 yards. Nichols wasn’t ready for a game of this magnitude, Leonard, Fede, and Davis play their hearts out and come up short
Oh I hear hypeness by some Ossining coach or players. I hear yelling. Nyack better come in hype, these guys sound like they like practice this time of year
Nyack will pay for our struggles against Yorktown. Nyack will pay! We could of probably beat Somers the same exact way. We beat these guys 20-7 earlier in the season. What is the buzz? someone explain! We didn’t get a chance to show our stuff against Somers. No excuses but we really had an off night, forget about it already! We are coming for those Inidans heads saturday
The Ossining team that takes the field saturday will not be the same Ossining team that took the field last saturday.
Ossining 21 Nyack 0. With Ossining best defensive effort all year long! Fenessey did the running already for Nyack’s back, no more yards.
Wavie Crockett, we so wavie, owwwww!
that last comment almost put me to sleep. I hope your a fan or a jv plauer, I know Ricci wouldn’t allow any players on this site. It’s not meant for the players… man quit it
Talking like that isn’t even bulletin board material, Nyack players would read that and not even laugh. That does nothing for both teams
Vote Obama in the AM
Listen to the Matt Dubray interview! He says it like it is. Ossining has nothing but respect for Nyack and love for the game of football. And, like every other town, Ossining fans are proud of their football team and its coaches on and off the field.
Do not believe that Coach Ricci has his team believing they are the favorites. They may ooze confidence but they also know they have to work very hard to prepare for this Nyack team. The difference between last year’s ugly game and this years… This year they won despite the ugly. Ossining will be ready and I am sure Nyack will be too. There is no fear on either side of the ball.
Speaking of Ossining, whatever happened to Jujuan Perez ? Did he move on in school? Is he playing football anywhere?
HVK,
Good question does anyone have an answer about jajuan perez?
He is at Nassau getting his grades up. Before he hurt his hand he was leading the league in tackles. I understand BC is still interested in him.
how long did jajuan play until he went to Nassau
A Fan,
According to this link, JaJuan Perez is up at Hudson Valley CC:
https://www.hvcc.edu/athletics/football/roster.html
Other Section 1 players on the team include: Darrell Carter and Jordan Weir from Poughkeepsie, Lamar Fisher, Eugene Cooper and James McMillan from Mount Vernon, and Dan Killoran from New Ro…
Jajuan Perez is at HVCC and did have an injury to his elbow that ended his season. He was destroying the competition from what I hear and is trying to get his grades up in order to land a place on D1 program.
While were at it….. where’d the Osborne Kid go??
Never mind I just rememberd, Sacred Heart
Jax, talk all the football crep you want but DO NOT tell me who to vote for.
Someday you will have a job and pay taxes and then you will wake up.
IN THE WORDS OF JOE KENNEDY: VOTE EARLY AND OFTEN.
looks like you voted against change!
Obama 08’!!!
CHANGE IS NOT ALWAYS GOOD.
MORE OFTEN THAN NOT CHANGE IS BAD.
YOU’LL SEE.
Were just going to have to wait and see
Change has come!
