CHSFL Playoffs

November
3

The official CHSFL playoffs were announced tonight, and Stepinac was shockingly on the outside looking in.

The Crusaders were victim of something Section 1 football fans know all too well: the unpredictability of Power Rankings. The Catholic League uses a system similar to the Piner System, which uses winning and losing percentages to calculate its playoff rankings. Stepinac dropped a fraction below Mount St. Michael mainly because a one-win team beat another one-win team, thus altering the rankings for everyone involved.

It’s quite complicated and probably isn’t worth dissecting at this point. The seeds are done; Mount St. Michael is No. 8 the AAA and will face Iona Prep in the opening round, and Stepinac will settle for the No. 1 seed in AA, which it won the title in last year.

Here are the brackets:

CHSFL Playoffs
AAA Division
No. 8 Mount St. Michael (3-6) at No. 1 Iona Prep (8-0), Sat., 1:30 p.m.
No. 5 St. Joseph’s by the Sea (4-3) at No. 4 Xaverian (5-3), TBA
No. 6 Chaminade (5-4) at No. 3 Holy Cross (5-2), TBA
No. 7 St. Francis Prep (4-4) at No. 2 St. Anthony’s (7-2), Fri., 7 p.m.

AA Division
No. 8 Kellenberg (6-3) at No. 1 Stepinac (4-5), Sat., 1 p.m.
No. 5 St. John the Baptist (6-3) at No. 4 Fordham Prep (3-6), TBA
No. 6 Xavier (7-1) at No. 3 Monsignor Farrell (2-7), TBA
No. 7 St. Peter’s (6-3) at No. 2 Holy Trinity (4-5), Sat., 1 p.m.

    stepinac back where they belong

  2. Joe the Plumber

    stepinac lol

  3. CHSFL

    disgraceful..

St Francis and Mount need to swap places with Trinity and Stepinac…

  4. PrepPride

At least Stepinac has a chance to win a game now LOL…..They cant matchup with Iona and it would have been a rout!

  5. CHSFL

    PrepPride,

No need to act cocky. What Iona has been doing is very impressive, and I know most Step fans are supportive.

It would have been a great game. I don’t care what you say, whenever these 2 teams matchup, the records get thrown out the window.

  6. hsfbfan

you are nuts stepinac would have got crushed by Iona….Mount prob will too but Mount has a better chance than Stepinac thats for sure

  7. Joe D

Stepinac, Mount and Iona had 3 common opponents:

    Msr. Farrell
    Iona won 10-0
    Stepinac won 27-20
    Mount won 19-13

    Xaverian
    Iona won 35-21
    Mount lost 34-0
Stepinac lost 28-25 (Easterling injured early)

St. Francis (who is in the AAA playoffs)
    Iona won 47-7
    Stepinac won 42-14
    Mount won 20-6

    Additionally,
    Fordham Prep
    Mount won 13-12 in OT
    Stepinac won 20-13

I would have to agree with CHSFL, Mount and St. Francis should be out and Trinity and Stepinac should be in.

An Iona vs. Stepinac rematch would have been an interesting game and much more competitive than Mount vs. Iona.

Good Luck to Iona and Stepinac, it would be great to see Westchester capture the AAA and AA titles.

    joe d:
    agree with everything you said.
    preppride:
congrats on a great year but don’t get ahead of yourself. last year iona was a 500 team in the aaa…and anytime they lost a game all we heard was that they were in the aaa and how it was the toughest league in the world! stepinac went 3-4 in the aaa…and would have beat xaverian if easterling didn’t get hurt in the 1st quarter.
    chsfl:
cocky and iona mean the same thing. don’t expect anything different.

  9. clueless

ionas cocky? look at mt. st. michael any other year theres a cocky team

  10. CHSFL

Westch Fan – Couldn’t agree with you more

  11. IonaPower

Stepinac was really screwed by the CHSFL. They deserve to be in the AAA playoffs over St. Francis who they beat 42-14. Stepinac really aaccounted themselves well in the AAA this year. They lost some tough games against Xaverian, St. Josephs and Chaminade. They also played Iona tough.

As far as Iona being cocky I would have to disagree- I have not seen many over the top comments this year.

  12. ionaman

besides easterling and hunt who else does stepinac hav thts good…those two players are ur team ive seen that kid collins isnt a good qb and ur o and d-line suck stepinac cant compete in the AAA they belong in the AA were they play the less competitive teams… Stepinac cant play with Iona, St.Anthony’s, Chaminade, Holy Cross, St Joes or any other team in the AAA playoffs…im not tryin to hate but they wud hav been awful without easterling who i will say is the best running back in the section

  13. ionaman

i also forgot to mention if stepinac played any section 1 team they wud win

  14. ionaman

i also wanted to mention tht stepinac wud kill any section one team

  15. fan

    ionaman
please stop…iona would be nowhere near where they are if they didn’t have tyrae and the deep pockets that they have.

good luck to stepinac and iona…hopefully both teams represent westchester and bring home their respective championships.

the funny thing is the aa will be just as competitive as the aaa this year (with the exception of st anthony’s (traditionally) and iona (this year)

  16. CHSFL

ionaman – Nice grammar. Your parents must be proud.

  17. Joe D

    ionaman

Please see my previous post with common opponents:

The #4 seed in the AAA playoffs is Xaverian, Stepinac lost 28-25 this weekend in Brooklyn without Easterling.

The #5 seed is St. Joes by the Sea, Stepinac lost by 10 points to them in Staten Island and were down by 4 with 3 minutes in the game.

The #7 seed is St. Francis, Stepinac beat them 42-14.

The #1 seed is your very own Iona and anyone who went to that game would say Stepinac did play with them.

Stop bashing Stepinac, they should be a AA school they have under 600 students and are one of three smallest schools in the entire league including AA and A. If anything they should be congratulated for their efforts this year.

Good Luck to both Stepinac and Iona.

  18. ionaprepcrazed

    Joe D

You guys are crazy if you think Stepinac can play with Iona,

and Stepinac did not play with Iona, they may have been on the field but did’nt play with them.

Iona also has one of three smallest schools in the entire league. Not many more students then Stepinac. So stop making excuses.

  19. ionaprepcrazed

Stepinac could not sustain a drive against Iona, a lucky big play here and there is not playing with a team.

Stepinac could not move the ball most of the game.

  20. ionaprepcrazed

    Joe D -see qoutes

    Xaverian
Iona won 35-21 (Game was not as close as the score)
Mount lost 34-0 ( mount got blown out)
Stepinac lost 28-25 (Easterling injured early) (these two teams are even opponents for each other)

St. Francis (who is in the AAA playoffs)
Iona won 47-7 ( Iona starters were out the game in 1st half, early 2nd half)

Stepinac won 42-14 (starter played almost whole game)

Mount won 20-6 (starters played whole game)

= nothing common about these games , only thing common is the names.

  21. CHSFL

ionaprepcrazed – First of all, those are parenthesis, not quotes. Dummy.

Secondly, I was at the Stepinac / St Francis game. Chances are you weren’t. Trust me, O’Donnell did NOT keep the starters in for almost the whole game. Starting in the 3rd quarter, the subs began to get playing time. They have a small roster, you expect every starter to be sitting on the bench. In most cases, a starting defensive player is a second string offensive player.

If you wanna make a point, thats fine, but use facts.

  22. Joe D

    ionaprepcrazed

Why did you leave out the Msgr. Farrel game?

    Stepinac 27-20
    Iona 10-0

The issue here is that Stepinac deserves to be in the AAA playoffs, not whether or not they are better than Iona. Anyone who is familiar with the CHSFL this year would agree, including the Iona Prep coaches and players.

  23. IonaPower

Stepinac should be the 7th seed- over St. Francis- Stepinac would have given St. Anthony at least a game- St. Anthony will have a cake walk over St. Francis- I thought Stepinac accounted themselves very well in the AAA.

  24. Wow

“please stop…iona would be nowhere near where they are if they didn’t have tyrae and the deep pockets that they have.”

    Hey fan,

what are you implying with that statement above? Iona alumni/friends are paying(deep pockets) selected kids tuition thru an internal sponsorship program? So that’s why the Mt. Vernon element is on the hill. So who’s sponsoring these kids, Under Armour?

C’mon now, you started it!!! What do you mean?

  25. fan

    wow:
i was talking about tyrae and how he is excellent in the pocket i.e. can run fast and “deep” in the pocket…he is awesome. guess i didn’t word it right – sorry!

what are you talking about? iona is paying for kids tuition who live in mvernon? wow…i thought all those kids were from new rochelle and grew up on wanting to go to iona – guess you proved me wrong?

p.s. iona is a fun high school team to watch!

  26. Specatator

    CHSFL is becoming the BCS.

  27. ionaman

i wasnt trying to be negative stepinac should win the AA easily i just dont think they could compete with the top teams in the CHSFL…and besides u cant say tyrae is iona’s only offense other than easterling jeff mack is the best running back in the area, chris alfano is the best reciever, nick biagioni is the best lineman, darlos and bronner are great athletes… the only player from stepinac that could play on iona besides easterling is Hunt next to hilton

  28. ionaman

and sidney weston is another great athlete on iona tht shud get some recognition

  29. ionaman

also with wut ive seen stepinac is better than st. francis but u wud still be the 8 seed which is nothing… good luck in ur playoff stepinac shhould bring it home to westchester
