Semifinal preview

October
31

ds3005_xl.jpgMaybe I’m old. But for some reason, I just don’t like Halloween.

I can’t ever remember enjoying the day after I got through middle school. It was more about shaving cream and eggs than costumes and candy. I’m not much of a vandal, so I never got into the day.

Since I’m off today, I’m going to get dressed up as a golfer and go play 36 holes. I’ll ask people for candy while I’m out on the course.

To get you started for the weekend, we have plenty of playoff coverage in today’s Journal News and on the Varsity Kickoff page.

I wrote a story about how Mahopac has pulled even closer together after its dramatic upset win over Ramapo, and the frightening injury to lineman Stephen Giannetta. The Indians travel to New Rochelle tomorrow.

I also had a story today on Dominic Leonard, the Nyack running back who missed almost all of last year with a severely broken ankle. Leonard needed three surgeries but has come back and had a productive senior season. He’s a key tomorrow night.

Despite a season full of injuries, Stepinac is in position to grab as high as a No. 5 seed in the CHSFL AAA Division playoffs when it travels to Xaverian in Sunday. That’s assuming, of course, the Crusaders can maneuver through New York City Marathon traffic to get out to Brooklyn in time.

Rockland reporter Harold Gutmann took a look back at the top moments of the season in the county’s football. Only Nyack and Nanuet are still alive for a sectional title.

We have an extended look at the Game of the Week: Nyack at Somers in the Class A semifinals. We also have some other news and notes, our weekly staff poll, and game by game capsules for the entire weekend.

Enjoy the day and night. Please be safe. If you’re going to vandalize anything, let it be the comments section of this blog, like usual.

Dom Leonard resembles Nigel Morris…. These guys look just alike LOL

  3. MAHOPAC FAN

Does anybody know who is replacing Gianetta at Center and DT for Mahopac tomorrow? It is going to be hard to replace a probable All Section Football Player especially playing at NewRo.

  4. purplewave99

I am a NewRo fan, and I think tommorows game will be tough. This isn’t the same Newro team as last year. We don’t have nearly as much talent as we did in 03-04(probably never will) I expect tommorows game to come down to the wire.

  5. DONNA

KEVIN: ONE CORRECTION TO YOUR STEPINAC STORY. MAURICE EASTERLING IS ONLY A JUNIOR NOT A SENIOR.

  6. 10801

which games will be broadcast online?

  7. IonaPower

    DONNA

Unfortunately for Stepinac Maurice Easterling will not be eligible next year. He will probably go to a prep school.

Great job by Guttman this year with his coverage of Rockland football.
Still not the same has it was not too long ago when EVERY Rockland team had a full length article the next morning.
The JN needs to add more writers. Kevin, Harold and gang can only cover so many games.

  9. MingTheMerciless

Is it true? Did Coach Clarke and the John Jay Indians really loose to Lakeland? Say it ain’t so.
    Poor Jimmy.
Just what is JJ’s record now? How far below .500 are they?
    HOW THE MIGHTY HAVE FALLEN.
HA HA HA HA HA HAH HA HA HA HA HA HAH HA HA HA HA HA HAH HA HA HA HA HA HAH HA HA HA HA HA HAH HA HA HA HA HA HAH HA HA HA HA HA HAH HA HA HA HA HA HAH HA HA HA HA HA HAH HA HA HA HA HA HAH HA HA HA HA HA HAH HA HA HA HA HA HAH HA HA HA HA HA HAH HA HA HA HA HA HAH HA HA HA HA HA HAH HA HA HA HA HA HAH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who would have ever thought that if JJ and JJEF played this year, JJEF would easily be a 4 TD favorite. My how things have changed.

  11. IT'S TRUE

BH’S CAPTAIN AN LEADING RUSHER IS OUT FOR TODAYS GAME. MEDEO RECEIVED 2 unsportsmanlike PENALTY AGAINST BRIARCLIFF WHICH IS AUTOMATIC 1 GAME SUSP. BH APPEALED TWICE BUT LOST. TOUGH BREAK FOR SENIOR, COULD BE HIS LAST GAME

  12. Jim

Wow! BH has a very good team, but Medeo is the spark that makes them go….how did he manage to get the two unsportsmanlike penalties in such a one-sided game last week? There’s an old expression about not losing one’s head because your brains are in it.

  13. Section 1 w/ some sense

If hen hud beats eastchester can the west league get some respect

  14. Jax

Yea everyone says nigel and Dom look alike

  15. MingTheMerciless

Carp did a great piece on how tough it is for all the underbosses to go up against The Godfather in a game.
Cas said no matter what he does, Tony will know what he is doing and how to counter it.
Cas has won 2 state titles and been the Boss at Nyack for 21 years. How about when you are going up against Tony you try SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
Enough with the wing T all the time. You have been a head coach for 21 years, innovate, stop using the same old stuff especially against the guy who taught it all to you.
    JUST A SUGGESTION.
INSANTIY: DOING THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AND EXPECTING A DIFFERENT OUTCOME.
    SOMERS 27-NYACK 10

  16. 10960

I love the post right before mine….. LOL

    Nyack 30 Somers 7

  17. BlueGael

Easterling has no eligibility left and is transferring to Brunswick….......
