Ossining-Sleepy Hollow on as scheduled
According to Ossining coach Dan Ricci, tomorrow night’s Ossining-Sleepy Hollow matchup will be played through the rain. The only thing that could postpone it would be lightning. In that case it would be rescheduled to Saturday night.
In case you missed it, Journal News columnist Rick Carpiniello wrote a great column today about the Sleepy-Ossining rivalry, which I urge you to check out. I was 10 years old when they last played back in 1990 so my knowledge on the game is pretty limited.
I did know that Bruce Jenner, step-father of the lovely Kim Kardashian and, oh year, a former Olympic gold medalist, played for Sleepy in the classic 1966 game. Jenner (pictured right) later ranked beating Ossining that day to winning his gold medal in the decathalon. Jenner, by the way, was a ridiculous football player in high school.
Ossining coach Dan Ricci, you should know, was a quarterback at Ossining in 1982 and threw for over 300 yards against Sleepy Hollow in that game.
Personally, I don’t know how it compares with Rye-Harrison. If you want to try to convince me it was, or still is, a better rivaly than Rye-Harrison, go ahead. If you want to talk about Kim Kardashian, I’m open to that, too.

Kim karashian is hot
If the weather friday night is as bad as they are predicting, then shame on Ossining for not postponing to Saturday. You are going to lose a good bit of fans (families and elderly alum from both schools).
This could be a true showcase for both teams and the unique rivalry that exists, yet you are going make it a ‘fan washout’
A Saturday night game would draw a significantly greater crowd and increase the ‘hype’ around this game. What a great way for us parents with school age children to spend a saturday night.
Shame on you “O”
I believe the forecast calls for rain both days.
Regarding “The game, it was huge then and it’s huge now. It’s hard to compare it to Rye/Harrison because they have been playing the past 18 years a leading nd we have not. However because of that fact it makes the anticipation of this game that much more intense. The hype leading up to the game was incredible. The whole town was into it. It gave you a real sense of community.
We lost 21-0 my senior year (77). It was devastating. I think we were so fired up before the game that we couldn’t play. I became good friends with some of the guys on Sleepy that year and we used to meet at the game every year and have some laughs. Guys like Bucci, Krizman and Gonzales. Hope to see a few of you guys there tomorrow if you can handle a little rain you wimps.
)
Rye is going to get their s**t rocked by harrison saturday.
Sleepy-ossining never has, never will touch rye-harrison. Rye-harrison is one of the biggest games in the north east. The hype is unmatched. I cant wait for saturday. Go huskies, grapple the garnets.
Otown-Sleepy is 4 real men, enjoy the wine and cheese fags

With regards to the Rye/Harrison rivalry:
The cricket and chess games being played by the fans during the actual football game are more intense!
The Rye/Harrison communities should be very thankful to have such an intense natural and geographic rival with 2 very competitive football teams.
Unfortunately, other natural rivalries do not seem to have the same intensity due to a lack of competitive football on the part of one or both the teams, or school size disparity wyhich makes it impractical to play.
But for the greater section 1 community the Rye/Harrison game sparks some interest outside the Rye/Harrison towns, geez it gets enough publicity, but certainly not enough that people will interrupt weekend plans.
I’m actually more interested in how Don Bosco does against DeLasalle High School, California, this weekend.
The rye harrison game is so hyped up becuase of the people. Mahopac carmel is just as intense, and definetly has more fans. Closer to 10,000 per game. Plus Mahopac and carmel have played each other every year since thier rivalry. Unlike harrison and rye. Secondly, rye harrison reminds me of a yale harvard game. Long rivalry, but some rich people in the stands don’t even know why their there. They just heard they should be. Kind of like the super bowl
Somerscraze, lets see Rye Harrison aprox 10,000 fans each year. Rye Harrison has been playing every yr except for 2004 and 3 years in the ‘30’s? And as far as people not knowing why they are there. 2 things. 1 I am not even 1 of those rich people you are talking about but just because people have money what they don’t know football? Lot of things about Rye and Harrison you don’t even know, stuff that goes on behind the scenes. Good for Mahopac and Carmel and Ossining you guys talk a lot of smack but I think it is funny how, if they are such big and longtime rivals how come they don’t get a lot of press or a lot of people talking about them? Why is Rye Harrison talked about all over the state, on WFAN and on CBS and Fox from time about their rivalryr? And yes they have been on those major TV/Radio stations.
Wow, sleepy-ossining fans are pathetic. Maybe if harrison turns into crap, rundown ossining and rye turns into a beat sleepy hollow town. Their rivalry could be better. Ossining-sleepy is nothing compared to rye-harrison.
lakeland fox lane game changed to Sat. at 130
The GIG you are a jerk-off. the above comments about “rich stuff” is a joke. You are too dumb to see through that. The passion for the rivalry is and was there. that is the bottom line.
I will give Rye/Harrison players the respect they deserve for being as tough and grounded as any players in Section 1. They do not deserve a spoiled rich kid label.
I admit to being a little jeolous of the type of game this is. I wish my rooting team, Nyack (I also follow the jersey catholics) had such a natural rivalry. Spring Valley us okay but has lost much of its lustre.
Media attention of the Rye/Harrison game is obviuosly to its tradition, but the relative prosperity of these towns i am sure contributes to it. WFAN, CBS, Fox, Journal News..is it fair to say that some peoples working in these companies are perhaps residents of Rye or Harrison?
FAN, its obvious that Rye and Harrison have a tremendous rivalry, however, if youre gonna be critical of others at least read your post.It looks as if a 3rd grader wrote it. If thats the case, Im sorry. The Rye /Harrison game was talked about on the FAN because Doggies wife went to Rye and Dog destroyed Dino’s coaching ability on a few occasions. The highlights were on cbs and fox because as a poster said both towns are full of rich folks. These rich folks have juice. Sorta like Bronxville in the 70s had juice with a certain channel and were routinely on the news
What makes any rivalry great?
Why is it that Rye/Harrison is such a great rivalry as compared to White Plains/Mt. Vernon?
Why do we not see tons of coverage with great stories of games past for WP/MV? These two have met on the field 92 times yet it is barely on the radar screen of rivalries.
Granted the towns don’t share a physical border like Rye and Harrison but there has to be more to it than that.
Discuss.
Riley…to add to your excellent points. There really are no rivalries left in NY so when something of this nature still exists, it will get exposure.
I will say it one last time.. The New York State football playoffs are killing any chance of having the great rivalry games of the past.. Just ask Iona and New Ro. I would rather watch sleepy – Ossining, Rye-harrison and Iona- New Ro. over any NYS championship game played in a 50,000 seat stadium agansit a team no one cares about with 2000 people watching. This is not Texas or Florida that can easily fill a large staidum. Bring back the rivalries, please. Bring back weekly games that people will leave thier homes and take intrest in. Your cheating all the kids out of really enjoying the high school sports expereince.
I would love to see Iona play New Rochelle, and doesn’t each team get non-league games to play. Why cannot that get done?
Observer,
This is only my opinion. White Plains and MV get tons off attention in regards to their basketball rivalry because both are very strong programs. You have to sell stories. People want to read about winners and all the hype that comes with it.
Both WP and MV have been down for a while in football. Nobody cares about a 2-3 WP team vs a 2-3 MV team in football. Tradition and history doesn’t matter in this case. People want to read about teams that are winning and watch teams that are winning.
I’m a WP fan and grew up there. From a historical perspective, there is so much history and tradition for both schools. Just think of the football players that have strolled through WP and MV.
If both teams were winners, then we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
Lion,
I’ve been waiting for someone to bring up Iona and New Rochelle. Believe me, there is more to these two teams not meeting than the supposed state and catholic playoff conflicts.
Ask the question of the right people and you will find the simple answer.
It would be very interesting to hear the reason given for not playing, if both schools were not in post season play.
Yes, I know they scrimmage in the pre-season.
Reason why rye-harrison is better than WP-MV (cant beleive im wasting my time on this:
-bigger crowds
-better teams
-border war
-twice as intense
-helicopter hovering over game.
-More glory
-bet on in vegas
-better players
-better food – better venues – better fans – talked about all year long
Why does everyone hate “rye-harrison”. Jealousy.
Hats off to the Rye/Harrison tradition but absence of, and return to a tradition always strengthens it. It’s a new era in an old rivalry and it will be special. “O”/Sleepy!
Contrary to ‘Parent’ I applaud ‘O’/Sleepy for keeping the game on Friday night. For a majority of the football world, Friday night is High School Football night unless the weahter is dangerous. I think the administrators in our area are much too quick to move games to Sat./Sun.
I also couldn’t agree more with ‘The Donald’. The ultimate trip to the Carrier Dome is as flawed as the Carrier Dome itself. (worst college football [or any level of football]venue ever) Super Regionals are the answer and can we play our regionals at one the best college football venues … Michie Stadium!
The schools should all go the independent route. Schedule who you want no matter what the size. There are so many out of class rivalries. Irvington-Dobbs, Sleepy-Pleasntville, Rye-Mamaro. Portchester-rye. Heck, most of sound shore teams play each other in youth football. Problem is, teams are so worried about winning every game and getting to the playoffs. It really is taking away the fun from the regualr season.
I played in three Horsemen-Indians games in 1968,1969,1970. I’m not taking anything away from Rye/Harrison. I can only tell you that at SH we trucked in a second set of far side bleachers. As a 16 year old kid to run onto that field is something you never forget. No fences around the field so the fans were three feet from you. It was nuts. I hope it can continue (without the need for police escorts)
RYE-HARRISON is the best game in the entire world, Biff and Buffy said so.
Guess what? It didn’t rain Friday night! What a night it was! A bigger crowd than expected attended the Ossining/Sleepy Hollow game. I want to thank both the Sleepy Hollow and Ossining players for memorable night. What spirit, grit, and good sportsmanship was displayed by both teams. Win or lose, I look forward to next year and many more years after that.
P.S. Football is played in the rain.
[...] remember when the Ossining High School vs Sleepy Hollow football game was a rivalry heard ’round the county. Bruce Jenner even played in that game! They haven’t played in 20 years now, but will resume [...]
