Spring football mailbag

June
20

My New (School) Years resolution for this fall will be to get better at responding to readers’ emails and comments on the blog. Too often I lag behind in answering questions or joining in on debate. Since even I even get lost in the comments section on this blog, I’ll periodically post a ‘mailbag’ entry and address those inquiries.

The response from the last three football entries have been overwhelming. We got over 100 comments on the “And the nominees are” post within two days and the “Preseason Rankings” post is still carrying conversation. Considering it’s June 19, that’s awesome.

Here’s my answers, responses and thoughts to what the people are saying:

IonaPower says: “Jeffrey Mack RB (Iona Prep) and Morris Hilton MLB (Iona Prep) should get some consideration. Also Caraun Reid DL from Mount St. Michael is one of the best DL in the area and Ryan Rossi an OL from Rye should get some looks into the list.”

KD: I completely agree with the four players you mentioned, especially Hilton. I remember going to Champions Camp last summer at New Rochelle to watch Iona Prep and Hilton totally dominated the middle of the field. If he played offense, he’d be a huge star by the end of the season. But the fact he’s specifically a LB, he’s going to have trouble getting headlines. For linemen and defensive-only guys, that’s just a reality.
—————————————
person and mpj89 say: “maybe a little too many on your (Super 11) list?”

KD: I wanted to throw out as many possible serious candidates I could. Of course, some guys are stronger candidates than others. To me, those last 3-4 spots are really up for grabs. Plus, more names makes for better debate. And I’m actually going to add one more: Anthony Davis of Nyack. I don’t know how I left him off.

MPJ89, you seem to have a really good grip on the talent in the area. But be careful when writing things like ‘overrated’ about kids. They are, after all, 17 or 18. Thanks.
———————————
Watch out wrote: “Why does RCD get no publicity, last year they could have hit with some of the best public schools in the area, including Rye. Chris kim is an animal and should get consideration, he is very fast and a workhorse. Hes even better than nick mckoy.”

KD: My honesty sometimes gets me in trouble. But I’ll give you the real response as to why RCDS doesn’t get much publicity: I really didn’t pay attention to them until its last three games. Yes, that was way too late. But the history of football in the school has been bleak in recent years. Suddenly, I looked up and recognized they were 6-1. If somebody is to blame at the Journal News over the lack of RCDS coverage, it’s me. I make almost all of the football assignments and I base it on a team’s success and the amount of reader response here on the blog. If more RCDS people voice their support, we’ll cover the team more. It’s that simple.
———————————————-

Football fan wrote: “Rye isnt going to be that good this year. Get a big defensive line and you can stop kyle Rahmalo. Name another factor rye has.”

KD: Coaching. Thanks for writing.
———————————————-

To all the people arguing over Rye vs. Iona Prep and New Rochelle at camp last year…

KD: I was at this camp for two days. Rye was clearly the third best team, as it should be. New Rochelle is a Class AA state title contender. Iona Prep is a CHSFL contender that draws some of the area’s best talent. Rye, however, wasn’t run off the field as some are saying. The Garnets also weren’t close to being the team in July that they were in November. Jordan Eck wasn’t quite as sharp, the line was being put together and the receivers were just getting comfortable. That camp is where Rye’s state championship was born.
————————————
Go Public wrote: “…Kevin kept (Iona Prep) in the top 5 to make himself look good not Iona(he and you are the only people on earth that think you belong there)”

KD: How does putting Iona Prep in the Top 5 make me look good? And you’re completely lost if you don’t think Iona wouldn’t beat almost every team in Section 1 (last year’s New Rochelle, North Rockland and Ossining games would have been interesting).
—————————————-

Keep the rankings and Super 11 lists coming. I enjoy reading them and find them quite insightful.

If there are any other questions you have, or debates you’d like me to weigh in on, drop me a line.

    Keviv,

You spoke about Mt. Vernon Basketball being in trouble is
Fox Lane in the same situation I believe their Budget
    failed twice I'm not sure.

  2. WazzuNY88

Poly Prep just got a commitment from 6'1"225 Robert Joseph from Poly Prep, could Lombardo's "replacing Brian Leonard" slot be taken?

  3. WazzuNY88

I mean Rutgers got a commitment, my bad

  4. La Voz

Who's replacing Troilo at Harrison? I recommend Rob Cappelli.

  5. mpj89

Kevin I'm just 19 myself (I'll be 20 soon), and overated is overated, point blank. IMHO the kid hasn't done anything (on the fb field, on the track he's a beast). And to answer WR32 I go to a local school and i'm 2 on the depth chart at two spots on offense, played in Section 1, and just heard about your blog. I follow section 1 football for the last 10 years or so, since my pops is a huge fan.

  6. mrvolo

KD, I LOVE THIS BLOG,BUT HOW CAN YOU PICK IONA OVER MSM IN EARLY POLLS WITH MT. LOSING IN FINALS TO ST ANTHONYS LAST YEAR AND A LOT OF PLAYERS COMING BACK.IN BB DOES MT HAVE CHANCE IN SLAM DUNK?IN 1944 I WAS IN GRAMMER SCHOOL AT MT. AND THEY PLAYED ST GEORGE OF CHI. 9. IonaPower

    Mr. Volo

Iona hase beaten Mount in 2 out of the last 3 years. Iona slo has more talent in the Freshman and Sophomore Class. Mount also lost probably one off the top players in the area in Jayson Holt- How are you replacing him????

  10. Lineman Challenge

Stoppin by the Lineman Challenge tomorrow Kevin?? i think Somers is going to take it..I want to see if Soloman is what people say he is..and if the olineman from carmel is, i think his last name is watkins not sure though

  11. dont know

    The I –
I hope you not one those kids trying to cause divison at IONA

It is a family over there, and they route for each other.

If you a kid good luck and stay off the blogs and go do it.

Darlos for Iona Prep started with a very promising season last year and had a very bad high ankle sprain. But no excuses.
He is a two way star. DB/RB/WR and Iona Prep will have loaded squad this year.

Michael Dunkley is name you will here, Jordan Bronner is a great player. LJ, Morris Hylton, Chris Alfano, in no particular order. And have you heard of Sidney Weston, the super Sophmore LB/RB tranfering, you will next week!!!

He will add depth to those positions. And all those kids will get the opportunity to play at the next level.

Iona is a family. And they play as a team.

The Mack kid is a great slashing style runner. Darlos is more speed, knowledge and power, Sidney will bring (baby Ray Rice in mind) but he bigger as a sophmore. Dunckley great athlete, great kid, great football player. and from watching them they will not be selfish- will they THE I?

This will in no doubt be the greatest skill players this area has seen in a long time. and they will compliment each other very well.

Darlos is running 4.5 forty and 4.0 in the shuttle. offers are coming. Tyrae 4.5 , Bronner 4.5 Mack 4.5, Dunkley 4.6, Alfano 4.6, Sidney WEston 4.6 , 5'9, 190lbs of muscle,

equals power, speed and knowledge of the game. wins!
    Go Iona!

  12. IonaPower

    dont know

Where is Sidney Weston transfering from???

  13. Franco's 624-CUTS

Has any1 heard about the kid Romel Jackson transfer senior out of Joe's( to Sping Valley) Last season who i tkink got ill missed the school year,He might be able to play as a 5th year senior

  14. ?

    don't know…
so maybe now iona will have a winning season…b/c for the past two years they have led the aaa in the most moral victories and payroll.
mount has been in the championship game 2 years in a row iona has not, and mount has had a much lesser salary cap.

  15. the problem

Troilo is going nowhere. He is the most successful coach they ever had, and thats saying alot saying that its harrison. The charges are being dropped.

  16. thnak you

Thank you kevin for responding to a comment about RCD, its about time people start recognizing them.

  17. The I

    dont know,

If your a player I would advise you to just stay off the Blog. There is no way what you said was true. I'll give darlos a 4.7 or maybe a high 4.6. Mack a 4.7 and Alfano a 4.8. With everybody getting offers like you said. There must be alot of swollen heads around. So we'll see how much of a family they really are next week at Iona camp.

  18. 914

    dont know,

i seriously doubt that all those player acctually run those times. Mack was definetly not that fast. Where are you getting this from?

BigBrownViking's did you see that your #1 AA team plays the #2 & 3 AA teams in the first two weeks in the season. How come no one has commented on the fact that whoever makes the schedule has New Rochelle playing Carmel in Week 1 and North Rockland in Week 2. Those are going to be some amazing games.

  22. mpj89

and ps. How can you have johnny McGhee on your Super 11, and not Tremayne Williams, That's a joke. Williams is 10 times better than McGhee, and since they play on the same team, it's an easy comparison.

  23. mrvolo

iona power, thank you.i really do not know that much about mt. football.lets root they both go to finals.

  24. Hoops fan

    mrVolo,
What year did you graduate from Mount? I've heard about some of those great Mount football teams under Howie Smith. I assume it was his Notre Dame connections that set up those games with the teams from Chicago. I've heard some of those games were played in front of 30,000 people – unheard of for football in this area today.

  25. mrvolo

hoops fan,1952.i was first team all catholic in football but was better in BB.i scored the first field goal in the mt. gym.howie did what maybe iona does now.he would get a player or two to play only their senior year and they were at least 19.the 1944 game was in polo grounds and at least 30,000 were there.i was in 5th grade.my senior year we played hayes at home with 15,000 fans.lost 7-0.because of BB I had an appointment to west point but was color blind sooo i went to RPI and was happy playing there.i have a nice family and have had a good life and i still owe it to the good marist brothers and my mom and pop.my west point appointment was from utah and you had to be a moron to not pass test.say no more.

  26. 914

ok im tired of hearing nick saglimbeni on super 11s. No disrespect to the kid but to make super 11 you have to be coming off an incredible season, not just be really hyped up. You need stats, and i dont remeber hearing his name once last season

  27. chill

Yes, players like jeremy burnett of harrison and saglimbeni are just hyped to be great. In order to make the super 11, you have to come off a great season, you need stats.

2.Jr WR Laquon Bradley (Has speed plus great Juke Skills I see him starting this season)
3.Db/Wr Michael Walrond Had a pick also plus came up with some great Catches also @ Wide out
    4. Nick Saglimbeni (Showed Speed at turning a little Screen for about 30ydrs

  29. Sectionals

If RCD wants more attention, they have to start scrimmaging better teams. i know they are a small school and therfore can't really scrimmage the larger schools. But look at what rye and Dobbs do. RCD beat up schools such as Haldane, Vallhalla, and Woodlands (WOODLANDS) in last years scrimmages. Maybe thye should scrimmage or even schedule a game with some bigger schools.

  30. Franco's 624 CUTS

    dear 914 ,
    have to take SAGZ back

Sagz has the Defensive stats to back his play he competed againt top competition in section 1AA ,North Rock, ossing,JJ est fishkill,JJcross river ,Pioneers, All Playoffteams, they just dont keep good defensive Stats Just click on my name for proof! Hes a (sleeper on O )this seson, He had 6 sac's,5 foced fumbles 2 fumble recovers ,3 pass deflections. H.M on D 2007

  32. Stepinac alum

    MrVolo,
My grandfather played for Howie Smith at Mount in 1936 and 1937 (graduated in 1938) – he always had great things to say about Smith. Thats interesting you scored the first basket in the Mount gym – that was always my favorite place to play! Its great to hear from a proud Mount alum.

  33. mrvolo

stepinac alum,i think howie graduated from ND in 1932, so he was 26 ,27 when your grandfather played there.in my time stepinac had great BB teams.in my senior year we beat them twice but lost in last game at county center to a team that was very good.a big guy named rich who was very good and volpe was there coach.

  34. Stepinac alum

    MrVolo,
I've heard about some of those great Stepinac basketball teams from the early 50's under coach Volpe. Ritch was a star at Providence after Stepinac. How were the Stepinac/Mount football matchups back then? I'd assume Mount had the stronger team.

  35. mpj89

BigBrownViking's why you got to be such an idiot. I didn't come at you, why you got to come at me? I asked you a question, why not defend your statement instead of attacking me. Can you please explain why you have Johnyy McGhee on your Super 11 and not Tremayne Williams. All I asked, don't be getting your panties twisted!

  36. mrvolo

stepinac alum,in 1951,they had there first good football team. we lost 2 games, hayes and stepinac.they had a good halfback who went on to holy cross.in BB the best player never played in college, dick McDine.after college we played for hasting southsiders and won donbosco tourney in portchester.many teams loaded up with big name players but we had only one,a kid from fordham.another good one was sacred heart in yonkers.you bring back alot of good memories.is your grandfather still alive?

  37. Stepinac alum

unfortunately, my grandfather passed away 12 years ago, but he was an All-Catholic football selection as well and I still have the little golden football he got for the honor. It was from the World Telegram newspaper, which is obviously no longer around.

I've heard about McDine, and I've met John Ritch – very nice guy – there was another guy from the 1951 basketball team – Dick Wise, who played at Notre Dame and Alabama. Stepinac's '51 team won the state Catholic championship I believe.

I actually played in the Don Bosco tournament in junior high, about 40 years after you did. Was Howie Smith the basketball coach as well as the football coach when you were there?

  38. mrvolo

howie smith was BB coach till about 1946.he then went to holy cross as assistant coach, football, for 2 years.my BB coach was bob mulvihill who played for fordham college in late 30's.his friend was vince lombardi who played for fordham and was backfield coach at west point.that was how i got my appointment to WP.I played against wise, he was 6-10 which was very big in those days but i thought rich was a better all round player.

    Franco,

Just watched sagz highlight tape. Hes a fine player but super 11 is not fine players. he did not dominate. I as a player last year in section 1 did not hear his name once. And he did not play the top competition. He played in the weaker side of class AA. JJ couldnt have cared less about that game after losing to new ro. New ro destroyed no rock without even playing well. I am pretty sure that most will agree here that New Ro Yorktown Gorton Mt vernon JJ and mamk were stronger than most teams on the other side of AA last year. I hope sagz has a great season this year, but he did not have the season last year to put him in super 11 over other more deserving players

  41. vinny2

  42. Franco's 624 CUTS

    914
Did not dominate? He was part of a allstar team that made and avanced into the playoffs And if I remerber JJ Cr came real close in beating new Ro ,Mt veron wasnt in the playoffs GEt your Fact straight!!

  43. 914

You need to get your facts strait. Mt vernon was in the playoffs and lost in the first round, coming very close to jj. You mentioned the pk pioneers as top playoff competition and they didnt make the playoffs and went 2 and 6 last year, thats real good. And the clark south win over jj was a fluke, jj was new ro's only competition last year and they gave up after that game. They couldnt have cared less vs clark south. Im sorry clark south was not that good last year and would not have made the playoffs if they were on the other side of aa.

  45. sec1 fan

Can you stop promoting your son and clarkstown south.

  46. 914

What facts?? You didnt prove that that side of the bracket was better at all. and i told you that you can not count the john jay game. Watch the tape of jj vs new ro then jj vs clark south. You can acctually see jj showing much less effort, the game meant nothing to them. they had waited all season for a rematch with new ro and lost and that was it for them. And besides u just proved my point about clark south; 1 and 4 against playoff teams in games that matter.

  47. Say It Aint So Kevin

Kevin I just heard some sad news. Can you PLEASE confirm if this is true. I'm hearing that the Mt. Vernon AD has told the Head Football Coach that there WILL NOT be football this fall, and that there are players and coaches already leaving. Some players are already looking to transfer, and coaches have already begun to look for other jobs. Say it Aint So Kevin. What would this do to the AA landscape?

  48. CTfan

RCDS, more coverage? For what. Who have you guys played? Brunswick School and Hopkins are the only teams that are actually good in that league and you guys got smacked by Hopkins and didnt even play Brunswick last year.

  53. irv

and u cant even type holy crap i could barely even understand wat u said in defense. and your someones father? wow

  54. Francis

    CT Fan,
I tend to agree with you on many points. Brunswick and Hopkins have been the best teams in the FAA for a long time. Powers and Royal are outstanding talents. However, the FAA is different than public schools when it comes to classification. I believe Brunswick and Hopkins are fairly large schools, and they might both be all boy schools. RCDS, on the other hand, is a very small school. RCDS did a great job turning around its program. Let's see if they can swing with the big boys. Your predictions may be very accurate.

  55. CTfan

I dont know how many kids RCDS has but Brunswick has about 250 kids in the upper school. Thats about 80 kids per grade. No that big. But your right, we'll see if they can hang with the big boys this year with both Brunswick and Hopkins on the schedule. Also, do they play any out of league games? Brunswick plays Trinity Pawling (Class A New England Champs) and Salisbury this year. Hopkins plays Poly Prep out of Brooklyn.

  56. ojo

You probably from brunswick and are the back up waterboy.

I have been watching these blogs for some time and have to say that I have rarely seen a father come right out(admiiting who thet are) and trash talk up their own kid. There is definitely something to be said about anonymity in reading you embarass yourself, your son and Clarkstown South football.

Not that South needs any help because their play on the field usually speaks for itself. I will be interested to see your comments when South gets rolled over this season.

If I were your kid I would take away your internet privledges. You obviously know nothing about hs football and what a dominate player looks like on the field.

  59. class A fan

if you wanna watch a dominate player on the field look at old films of sammy maldonado, if he looks anything close to him, then you can hype him up.

  60. class A fan

sammy maldonado, harrison high school, class of 1999-2000, NYS champion, Gatorade national player of the year, 99 touchdowns in prep carrer, over 7 thousand rushing yards, never played a 2nd half of anygame. Carried his team to a state championship in his jr year then brought them back to win it in 1999. not only ran the ball like an animal but burried runningbacks on defense playing linebacker like it was his job. Best player in section history, thats a dominating player for ya.

  61. class A fan

oh yea i forgot, sammy was the top back in the country as a senior … was recruited by Ohio State, Syracuse, Florida State, Miami, Penn State, and Georgia Tech….the first New York player to win two high school Heismans…. 99 touchdowns also he scored 15 more that were called back by penalties….only the second player in state history to surpass 7,000 yards (7,581)

  62. ya dig

actually in sammys senior year….he was the second ranked running back in the country behind willis mcgahee…but still jeremy burnett is a all county caliber player who should be in the super 11

  63. Hoops fan

whoa, wait a minute, I liked Sammy Maldonado as much as anyone, but I never saw him anywhere near the number 1 or number 2 ranked running back in the country, nor was he the Gatorade National Player of the Year. Maldonado may have been a borderline top 100 national player according to some publications, but not by many others. Clearly Maldonado was the most highly recruited player out of this area in at least the last 20 years. You could certainly make an argument that Maldonado was the best HS player in Section 1 in a long, long time. It would be hard to make an argument that Maldonado was the best player in Section 1 history overall because he didn't have a great college or pro career that many players from this area have had, but he certainly belongs at or near the top for the best HS career. Also, I believe Maldonado was the NY State player of the year – a great accomplishment, yet far from the national HS player of the year.

  64. ya dig

he was a all american though

  65. irv

thanks gridiron i completely agree. that guys an idiot

  70. Franco's 624Cuts

    Dear Grid
I like to read the blogs also, what i am doing should be pretty clear no one is promoting or thrash up talking (as put in your own words)My kid .I am trying to defend Negative trash talking about my kid ! from other people and post! You cant help but re-post in defence as far as embarassing Myself, my son and Clarkstown South football .You must be joking! I have done nothing but help put South on the map after there play did the talking for them , and got them in the playoffs by my highlights of ther games i help get them on FOX 5 game of the week last season vrs ramapoe .as far as hiding behind some screen name name , a man not a mouse and have no shame in what i have to say And it goes to shows what kind of person you are to bash me , and the KIds of South Is real low! theres a great bunch of kids here ,
    No better than IRV

Who are you to insinuate that I'm a father trying to fight with a kid. Is that a joke? Where did that come from? By the way how do you know that Gridiron's a kid? Watch what your insinuating! As you can see from my posts I speak my mind and feel no need to hide behind a screen name. Bashing is fun for you – as you hide behind your screen name – I got no time for you! Your accusations went too far! Keep your head in the game!

    setting the record straight

  73. Sam 7

Their is no way that Franco's cut is a parent its probably sagz or what ever his name is. Trying to hype himself up because he feels like he is going to have a great season. Its sad you have to go on a high school blog To talk about yourself to get exposure. Your better than that. come on. If this is Sagz dad why do you feel the need to keep mentioning your son. Your son at best is a decent player. He might be more but nobody will know intill the season is here . "I have done nothing but help put South on the map". South is no where near the map. No offense but south isn't good. Wow they made the playoffs. Their best player last year by far was Mcgill, He put south on the map this year. He was there go to guy. He wasn't even that good. He would of been second string at New Rochelle. So you see when you talk about south being good there isn't anything to talk about. They hung in there with a bad north rockland team. Congrats. I guess that makes the season a SUCCESS !!!!!

  74. Franco's 624Cuts

    Sam 7

    Have to take McGill's Back
    Bite your fingers son !
McGill 's a Beast one of the few D1 PlayerS to come out of Sec 1 !Did you watch the all-star Ny/Nj Game did you read all the press he got from K D Jr and to say the Red Raider had a bad team too !you dont even have a Clue!!

  76. Sam 7

I seen Mcgill played more than once I wish I had the chance to play against him. I started on the New Rochelle team that trashed New rockland by 27. North rockland was not good.

  77. Sam 7

    Isn't Mcgill going to a RCC… I don't think thats d1.

  78. jim

    SAMMY MALDONADO

I've been around a long long time, and Sammy was the best High School player I ever saw, and I'm from Rye. Some off the field problems and a coaching change(with a new system) impacted his stay at Ohio State, but he did have a very good college career at Maryland. What someone does in college or the pros has absolutely nothing to do with how he performed in High School. Michael Jordan was cut from his High School team. There were 12 guys in his town that year who were better HS players than him. Some of the greatest HS players I've seen failed to make it in college or the pros for various reasons…lack of talent is one very prominant one…but this was NOT the case with Sammy.

  79. ya dig

dont get me wrong…sammy was a great back….but who did he really play that was good in the area.

  80. class A fan

it doesnt matter if they were good or not, no one could play on his level in new york state, just watch the state championship games. He ran for over 200 yards in the state championship, obiovoiusly no one in the state was good if your going to say he didnt have any good teams around him in the area.

  81. class A fan

irv, im a big fan of section 1 football, iv been following it for years

  82. The Facts

The kid that broke all of Maldonado records was the starting tailback at Michigan the past four years. MICHAEL HART he played at a class D school and won a state championship look it up. Had a great career in college
much better then Sammy just got drafted into the NFL.
    LOOK IT UP!

  83. Hoops fan

    Jim,
For the record, Michael Jordan was cut from his varsity HS team as a 5'11" sophomore, yet became a star on the JV that year. Six inches and two years later he was a McDonald's All American as a senior, so I'm not sure if that is the greatest example. I do appreciate you thoughts of Maldonado as a Rye fan – most Rye fans seem to be inclined to say that the greatest player in Westchester history came from Rye.

  84. Met Head

Didn't Art Monk go to White Plains High School? Not a bad hall of fame player from section 1.

  85. Flyers

Art Monk , Jay Saldi WPHS both made it to pro's Bob Hyland #1 [ all american ] pick out of BC Green bay Packers & Eric Ogbogu[ academic All american Maryland ] played 8 years in NFL- both from Stepinac, Matt Bernstein- Wis- Drafted by lions I believe – was a Great HS football player & a great college player! Kennedy from Roosevelt- NFL player- Played in pits so did not get recognition of a star running back. The Summers brothers out of White Plains were as good as any HS football players I have ever seen. White plains. Michael & Quincy probably could have made it to play on Sundays if they choose differen't paths out of HS. Sammy was a great player a man playing with boys at the time. When he got to college he had to play vs other athletes who were as good! To say he was best ever is defintely pushing it.

  86. Hoops fan

It would be hard to argue that Art Monk – an NFL Hall of Famer – wasn't the greatest NFL player ever to come out of Westchester. Bob Hyland from Stepinac was a First team All-American at BC and the #7 overall pick of the Green Bay Packers. I don't think anyone from Westchester was ever a 1st Team All-American or picked as high as #7 overall, so a strong argument can be made that Hyland had the greatest college career of a player from Westchester. Ray Rice who I believe was as high as a 2nd and 3rd team All-American would obviously be right in the conversation of best college careers. Paul Costa from Portchester was recruited to Notre Dame in the late 50's and went on to an All-Pro caliber career for the Bills. Thats a long time ago, but Costa certainly should be mentioned among the all-time greats from Westchester for both his high school career as well as his pro success. Maldonado was excellent, but there have been about 30 NFL players from this area, so to say he was the best ever is a tough one.

  87. Keith Fagan

It's not too late to sign up for the NY Giants Youth Football Camps going on around Westchester his summer! If your between the ages of 6 and 14, or have brothers/sisters that age and are reading this, ask your parents to look into signing you/them up for the Football Camp! There are Camps at Iona Grammar School from July 7-11, 14-18, Stepinac High School from July 25-28, and others.

  88. Section 1 Threat

New Rochelle Looks to have another great season and with the talent they have look to make another run toward the covenant State Championship; With Carmel and North Rockland back to back New Rochelle will be forced to come together alot sooner than other teams but with the coaching staff and great players they look to go all the way nd finally surpass Monroe-Woodbury after two years of falling short.

Francos Cuts, ya gotta slow down. Many have said this before and as long as you continue gassing your son, people will continue to say that ya have to cool it. Your son is getting clowned on this site daily. Hes obviously a good player but It hurts me to read all of these negative comments about him. Another thing, if you have a family at home, dont give out your address and phone number. There's some twisted folks out there who might knock on your door. What if youre not home?Tough guys end up in jail or dead.
Have you been taking your son to some school visits this summer? NY has tremendous D3 programs and it looks like your son could make an impact at a school like Ithaca, Cortland or Brockport. Best of luck

Anyone know times & places where Harrison scrimmages?Any word on the street what they look like?

  93. class A fan

Not sure where harrison has their scrimmages but last year they scrimmaged Iona, New Ro and eastchester at Champion Camp in New Rochelle. That Camp is around the end of July. Their suppose to scrimmage Mount Vernon a week before Week 1 but who knows now with their budget issue

  94. class A fan

HHS73, Huskies look very good, Big Line, Fast Strong backs, somewhat experienced QB(started the second half of season), Defense looks very promising with veteran Line backer Segal and Jeremy burnett great football player dont know where he will play this year on D, last year play end on defense heard he could be changed to linebacker.

  95. class A fan

i have a question for Rye Country Day, if they can give atheltic scholarships to go to their school, why not get good football players from around the area and give them scholarships to play football at RCDS

  96. HHS73

Justin Segal will be pounding the ball this year.Strong straight up runner who will be very hard for anybody to stop.Tanner Knox is one of the most promising, all around prospects Harrison has had in decades. He is all over the ball. The question is will Artie play him due to the fact he's only a sophmore. It would be a huge mistake not to.The big question is,will the D secondary be able to contain teams like Rye,JJ Crossriver(who will be competing in A this season)and Eastchester. Also the new field will not be ready until possibly late in the season, due to the completion of bleachers…....

  97. IonaPower

    HHS73

Harrison will be at the Champions Camp at New Rochelle- The teams in attendance are New Rochelle. Iona Prep, Eastchester, Roosevelt and Tuckahoe-

Harrison will probably scrimmage Iona and New Rochelle for the majority of the camp- Iona runs the spread and has a lot of speed so this should prepare them for the few teams like JJCR and Rye that throw the ball.

  98. HHS73

IonaPower,do you have a date & time? Thanks and good luck this season…..

  99. class A fan

Whos the QB for rye this year if Remy Pinson left?

  100. IonaPower

    HHS73

The Champions Camp is scheduled for July 28-August 1. Most of the live scrimmages last year were from Wednesday through Friday. The best days are Thursday and Friday. The times were from around 5.00pm-through 7.30 pm. Last year Iona, New Rochelle and Harrison had some spirited scrimmages.

    class A fan

With Pinson off to Trinity Catholic it looks like the sophomore Eck will be the QB. I think he has the potential to be very good.

  101. irv

why wasnt justin myers considered for super 11 last year?

    CB-Sam Goldman (Sr.)
    CB-Dan Fraioli (Sr.)
    S-Claudio Delli Carpini (Sr.)
    S-Phil Dilullio (Sr.)

It looks like harrison has alot of experience this upcoming season with many returning starters.

  103. HHS73

Harrison's senior laden starter's look strong this season. The Huskies will be hard to stop on the ground. If the D play's more aggressive and contains, they will have a good shot. They're going to need it with the likes of Rye,JJCR,Greely and Eastchester. This year's A will be the toughest Harrison has faced in sometime.Regardless, the Huskies have the potential to take it all…

  104. Section 1 Threat

Any Early predictions on how Champion Camp will go this year? Who will establish themselves and who will not?
    Iona Prep
    Harrison
    Eastchester
    New Rochelle
    Ardsley
    Roosevelt
    Briarcliff
    Tuckahoe

  105. IonaPower

    HHS73

I agree with you that Harrison will field a strong team this year. The only question that I have is why are so many players playing both ways. I know this year at Iona Prep only 2 players could maybe play both ways in Darlos James RB/WR and CB and Jeffrey Mack RB/CB. When I watch teams in the CHSFL AAA like St. Anthony, Farrel, Mount St. Michael and Chaminade the one thing I notice is that they rarely have two way players. Even last year St. Anthony had a Rutgers recruit (Scott Vallone) only play DL.

Is Harrison struggling with their numbers or do they have limited depth this year. Nonetheless they should have a very good year with players like Segal, Delacarpni, Jones, and Protano who are all top notch players.

  106. IonaPower

    Section 1 Threat

The Champions Camp is about all the teams getting ready for the season. It is basically the training camp before training camp. I can tell you that Iona is not worried about if they look better than Harrison or New Rochelle… They want to get the offense in place and establish who is their QB.

  107. HHS73

Iona Power,I have to agree, its all about testing the waters.Real game situation is another story.Harrison really gets up to play Iona, more than any other team there. Both teams play with intensity. As far as players playing both sides,I really can't answer that.It seems to work for them,so they stay with it.Predictions,New Ro,Iona,Harrison looked good the last few scrimmages, will probably look good this time around also.Eastchester will look good.Again,in real game situations against top ranked teams is another story.Thats when you have to have the goods….....

  108. IonaPower

    HHS 73

Last year New Rochelle, Iona and Harrison all showed great intensity in the scrimmages- This year should be no different- Why do you think Harrison gets riled up for Iona? Iona has very few players from the Harrison/Rye area. I know Iona does get up for New Rochelle for obvious reasons.

  109. BillyBarty

    Class A Fan,

RCDS is very a good academic school. They have a reputation to uphold and will not offer a kid a scholarship based solely on athletic ability.

I wouldn't want my son to attend RCDS. I believe in Public School Education as it brings more diversity and reality to a student's life.

  110. Section 1 Threat

IonaPower I agree with your thought on it being a training camp before training camp but i also believe this a big camp for the schools attending. The season is right around the corner and this pretty much separates the starters from the backups. When New Rochelle and Iona meet its always intense, both teams seem to get riled up about that. Also, Harrison gives their fair of intensity in the scrimmages. I believe it gets alot more exiting between Iona and New Rochelle for the fact both teams are in New Rochelle and have a lil bit of a rivalry. Champion Camp seems to be very exciting and a preview of what the 2008 season will look like.

  111. IonaPower

    Section 1 Threat

I agree with you about the importance of the Champions Camp. It is probably the best team camp in the summer. Iona and New Rochelle have had some nice tussles the last few years at the Iona Camp and Champions Camp. Last Month at the Iona Camp both teams went after each other very hard. New Rochelle is an important scrimmage partner for Iona because they are one of the few teams in Westchester that can emulate the competition that Iona will face in the CHSFL AAA. Harrison also helps Iona prepare for some of the teams like Mount and St.Anthony that run variations of the triple option.

  112. Section 1 Threat

IonaPower i agree with you and Iona is a very important scrimmage partner for New Rochelle, they prepare them for the likes of Carmel and North Rockland in which who they face 1 and 2 in the first weeks of the season. Harrison also is a very good scrimmage partner because of their teams talent and competitiveness, Harrison i believe gets the best out of it all scrimaging New Rochelle and Iona which will prepare the team for anyone they will face in class A. Champion Camp will help Iona, New Rochelle, and Harrison become stronger and more prepared for the 2008 season and i believe all three teams look to make big runs this year.

True,Harrison will get the extra benefit of playing two very strong and diverse teams from the area.It just seems Iona and New Ro present a challenge to Harrison considering they are much bigger schools.Great to watch all three teams play….....

  115. class A fan

harrison gets crazy when they play anyteam, harrison kids are jus nuts on the football field

  116. class A fan

ya dig, is that preseason starters or starters that are most definatley going to start because i heard acouple of jrs could start on Defense

  117. Section 1 Threat

Harrison players do play very hard and give alot of competition at Champion but i do remember last year New Rochelle getting the best of Harrison and with the team they have this year we could have a repeat.

  118. HHS73

New Ro did get the best of Harrison last year. You would think they would given they are a much bigger school, plus the fact that there were a couple of exceptional players.Harrison did'nt play them with anyway near the intensity of Iona.Actually they came out flat. The only decent play I remember was Segal's run up the middle.New season, let's see what happens…....

  119. Section 1 Threat

I agree lets see what happens but the New Rochelle defense looks alot stronger in the dline nd linebacker area and secondary looks to have more size then last year so we will see

  120. O Fan

    Kevin,
I understand these posts are old and responded similarly somewhere else but I was wondering, how can only 1 player from Ossining be listed as in contention for Super 11. Jesse Drinks will probably be the fastest kid in the section this year. He took second in states in the 100 meter and he took it with a time he beat many times during the season. Also, QB Justin Kreamer is a smart player, who can run for yards and definitely throw for more and his arm appears to be even stronger than last year. People overlook him because of his height, I wouldn't. Just ask the coaches who played against him last year, I have. They give him a lot of respect.

  121. turnovers

Sags is one of the most overrated players I have ever come across. So out of shape, strong but so are most football players. As for McGill- great player but even bigger baby.
