Final: NJ 33, NY 22

June
8

Update, 6:57: I’m back in the press box, scrambling to get my story done so I can get on the road. Beach traffic is going to be a, er, beach.

If I leave now, I should be home before midnight. Talk to you then.

Nothing much to report from the postgame, aside from Paris Walker telling me he’s now headed to Central Connecticut (not prep school) and Antoine McGill telling me he’s goingn to Salisbury Prep School (not Nassau CC) and intends to either play at Rutgers for West Virginia in 2009.

Update, 5:26: There’s just over 5 minutes left so I’m going to head down to the field and watch the rest from there. Be back soon for more updates. Follow on tv and feel free to drop me a line.

Update, 5:23: New York has upped the tempo on offense and New Jersey is having trouble keeping up. It resulted in a touchdown on a great diving reception by Brian Taylor from Jeff Legree. It’s 33-22 with 5:58 left.

McGill (undecided) just gained six yards on an reverse. The NY coaches really have thought highly of McGill’s ability evidenced by the play-calling. Considering the roster who three D1 receivers on the roster, that’s pretty good.

Jeff Legree (Temple) is a very good QB. He’s a lefty with a strong arm. His angle is low and, since he isn’t 6-6, he’s going to have to alter it. But that won’t be difficult.

Update, 5:10: They just announced that Ray Rice was at the game, standing on the sideline behind the New York bench. The crowd roared.

A guy in the press box said a moment later “Nice of him to come. I wonder why he’s here.” Hello?

New Jersey ran in a touchdown on the final play of the third quarter, a 1-yard score by Washington. It’s 33-16.

Update, 5:03: It’s a good thing they have the speaker system pumping into the bathroom. Or else I would have completely missed Markell Rice’s interception touchdown.

Rice returned the INT 79 yards for the score. The two-point conversion (following a roughing on NJ on Prendergast’s extra point) was good. It’s 26-16.

Update, 4:50: Another NJ touchdown makes it 26-8.

To review, here’s what preceded the NJ touchdowns:

1. A horrifically blown coverage
2. An interception inside the 30
3. A blown call on what should have been a fumble
4. A fumble inside the 30

Update, 4:48: Since we had a nice 30-minute halftime break, I was able to flip through the game program a little bit. Like always, there were dedications to some of the players from family, coaches and schools. Here is what the locals had:

Darell Carter and Moquan Dickens had their own page, given by their mothers, with some inspirational quotes. Photos were nice.

Antoine McGill maybe had the best page in the book. It’s a picture of him superimposed in Rutgers Stadium, given by Clarkstown South High.

John Zoppo had a big bold headline: “Go John, Section 1 and the Rest of the New York Team. Beat NJ” I like how “Section 1″ was highlighted. It was from his family.

Paris Walker’s page said: “Good Luck Paris Walker” over a big photo of him. On the bottom it says “UNSTOPPABLE” in huge bold letters.

Sean O’Connor had a page given by Iona Prep School.

Update, 4:42: Fumble New York on the first play of the half. NJ ball on the NY 28.

Update, 4:40: We’re about to get back to football.

Halftime stats:
Paris Walker has 3 solo tackles, one for loss
Markell Rice has 2 tackles
McGill has a 14-yard reception

New York has rushed for 48 yards and thrown for 47 (95 total)
New Jersey has rushed for 50 yards and thrown for 152 (202 total)

NJ QBs
Tim Lamirande is 7 for 9 for 83 yards, TD
Mohamed Sanu is 3 for 6 for 69 yards, TD

Update, 4:18: It’s halftime. New Jersey leads 20-8.

Apparently the guy who invented football is sitting right next to me in the press box. All he keeps doing is criticizing every play run by either team. Usually he’s wrong. NY just ran their sure-handed halfback on a draw (against a prevent defense) with 4 seconds left on their own 22-yard line. I guess I didn’t realize NY had a QB who can heave the ball 85 yards over five DBs.

Uh-oh, I think he’s leaning over and reading my computer. Time to go.

Update, 4:13: Damaging blow before the half. Tim Lamirande (undecided) connected with Brian Burham (Tulsa) for a 29-yard TD with 52 seconds left in the second. Extra point failed, so its 20-8.

New Jersey shouldn’t even gotten a chance to keep the drive going after a fumble — on a fourth-down attempt, no less — but the refs blew the receiver was down.

The TD was thrown directly over the middle downfield. Samad Wagstaff was the closest defender but I think the safety, however, (No 87, no name in the program) was at fault for basically standing in the middle of the field and not covering anybody.

Update, 4:04: Wagstaff, Rice and Walker are getting a workout right now. All Jersey wants to do is throw the ball downfield. With very little NY pass rush, they’re doing it effectively. It seems Walker is in on ever tackle. Four minutes left in the half. Going to beat the crowd and get a drink. Be back with stats.

Update, 3:58: New York is on the board thanks to a 1-yard TD by Kenny Youngs of Lansingburgh. Huge play since it was 4th-and-goal. Not scoring there would have been demoralizing.

Daniel Basil botched the snap on the extra point but ran it in. It’s 14-8 with 6:11 left in the first half.

The drive was kept going thanks to Prendergast getting roughed on a punt attempt. He was hit into and fell like he was hit by a truck. Punters make good actors. Antoine McGill caught a 12-yard pass on the next play as NY crossed midfield for the first time.

McGill and Carter had passes thrown in their direction on 2nd and 3rd downs that were incomplete. Sean O’Connor played a strong right tackle on the series. Good showing so far by the LoHud.

Update, 3:46: Plenty of good seats available, as you can see below

downsized_0608081456.jpg

This is somewhat a joke. Fans aren’t allowed to sit behind the New Jersey bench because of construction (Rutgers is adding thousands of seats courtesy of the success afforded by Ray Rice). All the fans are below the press box, although there aren’t many more than what you see above.

Update, 3:41: First quarter is over… finally. Got to love TV. It rules the world.

Update, 3:18: Oh boy. A New York interception on its first play from scrimmage sets up another NJ touchdown. William Washington runs in a 1-yard score as NJ takes a 14-0 lead with 8:43 left in the first quarter.

Joe Sidaras, the QB from famed Long Island superpower William Floyd, threw the pick. McGill and Carter both started on offense. Walker, Wagstaff started on D. Unfortunately, NY was off the field so fast on offense that I couldn’t see whether Zoppo or O’Connor were on the field.

Update, 3:11: That was quick. Fifth play of the game goes for a 55-yard TD for New Jersey thanks to a blown coverage.

NJ came out in the spread and QB Mohamed Sanu (Rutgers) broke the pocket and heaved a pass to a wide-open Brandon Jones (Rutgers) for the score. Samad Wagstaff and Paris Walker were the closest two defenders and each was probably 15 yards away.

Tough start for NY, which needs to be close to perfect defensively to have a shot.

Update, 3:08: Nothing says football like 97-degree heat.

That’s what the thermometer said when I got out of the car before. Had I guesed, I would have said it was somewhere in the 120s.

Sticky and humid. Kickoff just went off. Michael Prendergast of North Rockland booted it to the best player in the game, Will Hill, who didn’t go far.

The game is on TV, of course. Here is a guide to who the local players are so you can watch out for them:

5 Markell Rice, New Rochelle
12 Michael Prendergast, N. Rockland
14 Samad Wagstaff, New Rochelle
21 Paris Walker, New Rochelle
24 Moquan Dickens, Poughkeepsie
25 Durell Carter, Poughkeepsie
77 Sean O’Connor, Iona Prep
78 John Zoppo, John Jay
88 Antoine McGill, Clarkstown South

Section 1 Represent. North Rockland kid keeps the ball with that amazing punt/getting knocked down.

  2. Jeff P.

Nice pass breakup by Poughkeepsie's Darrell Carter @ 1:30 mark…; it probably stopped NJ from getting another TD (well, they just got one anyway)...

  3. The I

paris and markell played. New York could of really used paris on offense. I dont think The running back # 9 or # 6 ( can't remember) Shouldn't got as many reps as he did. But they again i'm a fan not a coach. The kid that also stood out to me was number 17 on NY. He was really good. All the new jersey players look the same tall, muscular and athlethic. Its going to be a while before New York football gets to New Jerseys's level

  4. New Ro # 51

A Player to look out for. Is New Rochelle's own Stephen Greenwich. He dominated in camp Pontiac last season. This year he looks to lead the New Rochelle Huguenots to a sectional championship.

!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you Antoine McGill of Clarkstown South For putting South on the map in the Gov.Bowl !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!You are one great Kid!!!!!!! Go South!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not to sound like a hater, but that production of the game was a complete MESS.Recco and the other announcers were just plain pathetic. They rarely mentioned the kids names, where they went to high school or where theyre going to college. They tried to interview the NY coach three times and couldnt get the audio hooked up.Im glad that the game was on TV,however, where was Mike Quick? It sounded like the announcers did a little review of the Jersey roster but they knew very little about the NY players

  7. Ctown

I saw part of the game and was impressed with NY team. The NJ team was stacked with DIA players but NY hung tough. Our sec I boys did well showing that section I can compete with the best in NY and the northeast.

  8. OLD SCHOOL FAN

    KEVIN,

First of all, i just want to congratulate the Section 1 players that played in the game yesterday, as always Section 1 was represented with pride, BUT i have a problem with players that made your first team all county and why they werent chosen/asked and overlooked my players with lesser ability. Please know that i am not knocking on guys abilities, but if you want to beat NJ, you have to bring the best players from NY to do so. I just dont understand what film this NY coach was watching when he made selections, i wonder if he asked anyone for help in picking players, or even looked at who made 1st team all county and INQUIRE about those individuals.

    Hope to hear ur response.

Whats going on at NewRo? I know they run a great program and do things the right way but why are a lot of the seniors prepping? Are they trying to elevate their status in terms of college recruiters or are they trying to get their grades up? I had to do a PG year in 92-93 so I know what its all about. Just wondering

  11. BillyBarty

Glad to see so many Section 1 kids in that game. What's going on with McGill? Is he a D-1 or D-1AA prospect. I know he excells at track, so maybe he's going to head down that route.

Dillon Quinn from Elmsford verbaled to Boston College a few weeks ago. Seems like an intriguing prospect at 6-6 270lbs. Didn't he attend Iona Prep for a couple of years?

Rileygirl, that's a good question about the New Rochelle kids. Might be a mixed bag with them. Markell Rice remarked that he has some maturing to do. Seems like grades and the possiblity of elevating his status are a factor.

  12. BillyBarty

Didn't do my research. Got the answer to my question about McGill in the NY/NJ article. Kid is headed to Salibury Prep.

    Fellas,

Lets face it, Jersey high school football is leap years ahead of section 1 football. Teams like New ro and North Rockland would be middle of the road teams in the NNJIL and lets not even bring bosco, joes or bergen into the mix who would crush the catholic schools in section 1.
Maybe if you combined new ro and north rockland they could lose to bosco by 4 td's

  14. dm50

St Joes and Bosco are great programs, but they pluck the best players from the public school. They "recruit" those D1 type of athlete. North Rockland and New Ro do not have that luxury. They have to play who they have.

  15. next year

Does anyone know if Pat Kivlehan from St. Joes was on the Jersey squad? I know that he is heading to Rutgers on a full-ride and I would assume he was playing in the game but I just wanted to make sure.

  16. Franco's

Hey Next Year kivs got a pick in the game he played

  17. Rileygirl

Dillon did go to Iona Prep. Hes listed as a 4 star prospect on Rivals. If you read the BC Forums hes highly regarded. TP also has an OLB Scov,I believe thats his name is and hes verballed to Stanford.
New Jersey as a whole athletically is better than NY. There were three Jersey high schools in the top ten for hoops in ST A's, St PAts and ST Benedicts. Many of these kids were from NY or 5th year seniors but the fact is they played ball in Jersey. Footballwise, Jersey is one of the top ten states in terms of producing high level talent for college. NY produces a stud like Rice, Hart and Leonard so there is talented players but the fact is that the NY programs are way behind in terms of coaching, funding and the foundations that NJ communities have. I work in the city and I coached football for a while at a CHSAA school, the talent is there but its tough teaching a sophomore in high school a 3 point stance when kids from Bergen County have been playing in a system since they were 6

  18. Franco's

usually my dad comments all over this website but i gotta give love to my boy antwan holldin it down for southh,, goood game man,,, hes ognna be starting WR for WV or Rutgers in a year gooood luck man

  19. Dot

whos is gona be the top prospect in NY next year. I beleive its between andre civil, shayne skov, and dillon quinn. On rivals its shayne skov and on espn's its between Quinn and civil.?? how nasty is that TP team with possibly the two best prospects in the state. I dont usually cheer for private schools tht arent catholic around here, i do cheer for rye country day jus b/c i think there a program on the rise, but TP will be nasty.

  20. The I

    franco please stop posting.

  21. Franco's

    Hey The I,??????????????????????????????????????:(

  22. FLYERS

The NCAA changed it's requirments last year. Now all D-1 kids must have 16 core courses instead of 14 as in years past. To be eligible they must have a 2.0 in those courses. ONly accepted courses are accepted. If a player has a 2.0 he then must have a 1010 Sat [ it works on a sliding scale]. I think many kids found themselves in trouble because Fresh & Soph grades were not high enough. That is probably the reason for the rise in Junior college & Prep kids this year. Also the lower rung of 1AA football has changed with alot of teams [ Siena, St John's , St Peter's, Fairfield & so on have dropped football]. Other teams such as Stny Brook & Albany & Marist are trying to go bigger & are not taking HS kids. They are going after JC & prep & transfer for quick fix. I also think that played into it.

  23. Rileygirl

DOT, another player thats receiving high grades is Jeremy Gatson. Civil gave an early verbal and it looks like Rutgers is starting to get some real top talent. They have that stud QB from Pa. the # 2 all purpose back in the country and some other top prospects. None of this is possible without Ray and Courtney changing the entire program. Had they not gone to RU, Schiano is the D coordinator at Rowan.
Norman Thompson from North Roc is getting some big time looks. What position are they looking at him to play ?

  24. Dot

U didnt answer my question, rileygirl. U noted some good section 1 players, but im talkin about best in the state.

  25. Rileygirl

Jeremy Gatson does not play in Section 1, nor does Civil.

  26. Section4

the best player in the state is shayne skov, he is now number 34 on rivals 100, he was a big mover, Civil is the second best, and quinn is the third best. I think some of the notable college football recruits around section1 will be from somers and harrison. Somers boasts lombardo, and deaina, a future college recruit. Harrison features the trio of segal, dellicarpini, and burnett.

  27. BillyBarty

    Section4,

Just curious as to why you rank Civil ahead of Dillon? I wonder if Lombardo will wind up playing D-1AA ball. I know it's still early, but he'll probably get an off from D-1A school. Wish Skov would have stayed on the East Coast, but he's headed back to California. Can't fault a kid for getting his education at Stanford. Harbaugh is going to build that program back to respectability.

  28. Section4

I beleive espn ranks civil ahead of quinn, but rivals now ranks quinn higher. I think next years top 10 class for NY will be better. you'll have a player better than averin collier at #1.

  29. scary

The NJ Catholic schools are strong, but to compare them to public schools is silly. They do not produce any of their own players, they scour the talent from communities all over the tri state, so forgive us if we are less than impressed, but then again, the poor kids who have to play there either have to live in, or commute to New Jersey. Most people in their right mind would rather chew broken glass everyday than suffer NJ.

ABSOLUTE CRIME THAT GREG SHUSTER FROM CLARKSTOWN NORTH WAS NOT SELECTED FOR THIS GAME
