Miller to Emory

North Salem basketball star Marc Miller has committed to play next season at Emory University, a top shelf Division III program in Atlanta.
Emory’s coach is Jason Zimmerman, who came to the school after seven seasons at Davidson, where he reached two NCAA tournaments. One of Zimmerman’s assistants now is Matt McKillop, the son of Davidson coach Bob McKillop, who will likely be a major Division I coach after he leads his team to the final four next season.
A perfect fit for Miller, a 6-foot-6 center coming off a sensational senior season. I’ve known Marc for a few years and he’s always had a good outlook on playing basketball in college. If a school wanted him, he’ll consider it as long as its among the elite academically. Emory is one of the Top 20 schools in the country.
Emory basketball plays in the University Athletic Association (UAA) conference, which is the best league in Division III. Washington University of St. Louis won the national title, Brandeis, Rochester and Chicago are always ranked. Trust me, it’s very good basketball.
Miller should fit in fine. Emory only has one other center on its roster, a 6-foot-6 kid who’ll be a sophomore. Miller has the chance to get time right away. He’s got to get a little quicker, but he’s definitely strong enough and has developed good foot work around the basket. He can finish and has the ability to step back a few feet and knock down shots.
Oh, and in case you forgot, he came back from knee surgery and was the only returning starter this season, yet he led his team to a Section 1 championship. Have we mentioned that before. Just checking.
I’m sure the pundits from Briarcliff will come flocking the moment I press the ‘publish’ button on this blog entry. Don’t worry, I spoke to him during last week’s onslaugh and he said he’s totally fine with it. It just amazes me that this venom is still lingering.
Marc Miller will go on to play in college, get a degree and probably become a doctor or lawyer and remember very little of this. Yet he’s going to haunt Briarcliff for the rest of his life.

haha it doesnt matter because lombardi is still better. He would have played at least division II basketball easily if he wanted. I still think miller is a scrub and has no buisness being on a college court. And dont worry im not haunted because we’ll be back.
So he’s gonna be a 6’6 center at college?
Lombardi got some low d1 offers….Miller got d3
you tell me whos better.
When are you guys gonna stop talking about Briarcliff like they are a basketball powerhouse. They suck period. They would be a first round out in A or AA, so shut up already.
Only good will come to an athlete like Miller. It’s great to know that not only is he a great athlete, he’s a leader, a team player, hard-working, smart and humble. All the attributes Briarcliff is missing.
Forget these jealous Briarcliff fans Marc. You have the Gold Ball and you have made a terrific decision in this case. Emory will give you tremendous academic and athletic opportunities and they are lucky to have your contributions to their basketball program and their campus as a whole. Thank you for taking me and the entire North Salem community on an incredible ride this year. You will never be forgotten as a great player and a great role model. When you are making a 6-7 figure salary one day, make sure to think of hiring Lombardi when he finally gives up on his quest to play in the major leagues.
i can not beleive the comments from briarcliff fans.we should all be happy for marc.i think some of these fans are doing lombardi harm by being sooo ignorent and mentioning his name in their e mails.they both had good HS careers and are moving foward .good luck to both and lets keep the game as a game which i love.
Folks
Its obviosly not Joe Lombardi critisizing Marc Miller for what is a very good accomplishment. When someone hates on Miller why bring up someone other than the person doing the hating. If anything Lombardi is probably one of the few to appreciate the hard work that goes into this type of achievment. Why dont some of you find something else or some other people to talk about. I’m pretty sure that both kids will be more than fine. How about we grow up and appreciate the efforts that they put forth in what was the game of the year.
Peekfatdaddy
Its plain to see why so many what you call great Peekskill players end there careers in a high school gym(Probably much like you did). Stop blaming coach P for your collective ignorance. Coaches dont get players in school athletic ability and academic achievement do. By the way…news flash! Jamesville DeWitt did work on Peekskill and slapped you. Kind of ironic that they ran the score on you in the process….how did that feel?
I dont recall any other teams including the ones you mention getting rolled up on with a 20pt ass whooping.
Peekfatdaddy
Thats what Jamesville DeWitt’s players said after they crushed you while walking out of the Glenns Falls Center. They SUCK period.
See what happens when you dont have the “slam dunk powers that be” and the “home cooking refs”(The same ones that robbed Lakeland) pushing for a Peekskill/White Plains final.
Hoops,
You must be a disgruntled Peekskill kid who never made the team. Jamesville Dewitt was an excellent team that I still believe Peekskill would have beaten if they played in the finals. I blame Mr. P for nothing. You are a joke and a disgrace who is just getting your rocks off on a blog. Sucka!!
I’ve been reading and posting on this blog for a couple years now and I’ve never posted anything personally negative about a another blogger and certainly nothing negative about an athlete. That being said, I greatly look forward to next season when the handful of overzealous posters from Briarcliff have little to write about. Briarcliff is a nice town, filled with I’m sure plenty of very nice people. Yet the handful of idiots who post comments here about basketball really make the whole basketball community in Briarcliff look bad. Instead of Briarcliff’s team this year being viewed as a feel good story I can’t help but remark what a bunch of uninformed, infantile fans leave such a bad taste in the mouth of other fans who read this blog who really didn’t have much of an opinion on Briarcliff before. I saw Briarcliff play this year and I was very impressed with their team – from a town not known for their basketball prowess this was definitely a very good squad. I liked Lombardi’s strength and athleticism and I was most impressed with Gullotta – he has a smooth court game and is a very good shooter. I think Gullotta has a chance to be a very good d3 guard. I actually think Gullotta would fit nicely into one of the UAA teams mentioned in Kevin’s post about Miller’s commitment.
In regards to Miller, I think this is a nice move. The UAA definitely has excellent competition – NYU also plays in this conference in addition to Washington U, U of Chicago, Rochester, etc. If Miller keeps working on his strength and quickness he has a chance to get nice playing time. Definitely a great accomplishment for Marc!
I have heard that Gulotta is actually lined up to go to Emory if he gets accepted off of the waitlist. That would be interesting to have Miller and Gulotta playing on the same team.
Yo kev, wut was up with tha BCLIFF HATING?
peekfatdaddy,
you bashed briarcliff and then thought it was a peekskill disgruntled kid who put you in the group of ignorant peekskill fans who ended their careers in the hs gym? OMG?
hoops fan, will you stop with your holier than thou diatribes? you are very boring. state your point in 100 words or less. u need to get a life. this is a blog. not a feel good society. i for one do not appreciate your pompous over researched blather
.....,
If someone knows a little bit about basketball they don’t have to research anything. I’d actually appreciate if some of the more ignorant Briarcliff fans – such as yourself – did do a little research once in awhile, then you wouldn’t sound so foolish.
Kevin’s post here was about a nice accomplishment for Marc Miller. Yet the first three posts are unintelligent scribble from childish Briarcliff fans. You can draw your own conclusions. And yes, answering your question there are plenty of 6’6” bigmen at all levels of college basketball, even lower D1 schools.
It’s a shame that a handful of lowlife Briarcliff fans that post on this blog poorly represent the Bears boys hoops team. This was a special year for the Bears in which they had a lot of talent and had a terrific season, yet when we have a chance to read about it here, a small bunch of dirtbags tarnish their success.
With that of of the way, congrats to Marc Miller. Emory is a great school and I’m sure he’s destined for wonderful success in the future.
.....
Get some class and represent Briarcliff properly. Maybe you should learn a little from Hoops Fan.
Have we all forgotten what this post is about? It is incredible how every post receives jeers from Briarcliff and the focus of the comments shifts right to their lack of class. I am going to make a related comment here by congratulating Marc Miller on making a phenominal college decision. Marc made a decision that really depicts the intellectual that he is. He planned best for his long-term future by choosing a school that might not have the best basketball program (although the outlook for Emory is very positive) in exchange for its superior academics. Congrats Marc, regardless of whatever you do from here, I know that you will be successful.
It’s a shame when the best thing that some people can say about their team or players is that another team or player stinks. As for Kevin’s “bashing” Briarcliff, it took 9 minutes for once a bear to post a negative comment. Not record time but still pretty quick.
Good luck to both Marc and Joe next year.
congratulations to marc for signing with emory and playing in the UAA. its a great school in a great league. also, congratulations to players such as david zaitz (amherst), eddie mcguiness (connecticut), and jason mendell (wesleyan). they will be playing in the NESCAC which is arguably the best division 3 league in the country. As someone who follows division 3 basketball, its going to be really good to see marc miller and the kids mentioned above play at great academic schools for the next four years.
Wow – it is getting nasty out here again..I was a big Briarcliff fan all season, watched many games, and was shocked when they did not beat North Salem in the Sectional final..I could relate all the reasons that I believe caused Briarcliff to implode, but I won’t….It is time to move on and wish all the graduating HS players the best of luck in their next phase of life…..Specifically, I would like to wish Marc Miller much success at Emory University..
Congrats to Marc Miller, he should be a great fit in that conference. I’m fairly familiar with a few of the teams in the conference and recall them having good big men. Should be interesting to see how he does.
Why do people bash the entie briarcliff community, town, team, school, parents, coaching staff and whoever else because there are possibly 4-5 people who post idiotic remarks from the town?
How do we even know these “briarcliff bloggers” are fans of the team or even from briarcliff? Anyone could potentially say they are from a town and make stupid, childish comments. This means they are expressing the views of everyone involved?
Even if they are from briarcliff, every town has atleast 5 morons right? Maybe the other towns morons just don’t have computers. Also, i’m pretty sure the briarcliff basketball team or it’s community didn’t have an election to vote any of these idiots to be their voice on this blog. I’m sure most of them are as good of people as you will find anywhere else.
All i’m saying is if someone makes a comment that you think is rediculous, let’s assume they are only representing themselves as oppossed to their entire community.
Take “next year” as an example.
A North Salem fan, albeit with a generic name who constantly spews negative comments on other kids. But because his name is not “town specific” he is not associated with North Salem.
Easily however, one of the biggest low life losers as far as bloggers go, if not the biggest.
I rest my case…lol
