Governors Bowl news

Samad Wagstaff, Markell Rice and Paris Walker reportedly have been added to the New York roster for the Governors Bowl, as reported on the Section 1 Recruiting web site.
(We should actually note that the game’s web site is calling this “formerly the Governor’s Bowl” and is now named the Nike NY-NJ All-Star Classic)
This is great news. To be honest, I was a little worried about the representation Section 1 would get in the game since there aren’t any kids going high Division I. We can expect Ryan O’Neill and Sean O’Connor of Iona Prep will be added, and probably Greg Schuster of Clarkstown North and Rashaad Slowley of Stepinac.
Who else am I missing? Keith Fagan, who is helping pick the roster, can hopefully fill us in with the rest.
The Governors Bowl, er, NY-NJ All-Star Classic is scheduled for Sunday, JUNE 8 at Rutgers Stadium. Jersey’s roster is set and can be viewed on the site.

Kevin, any word on where these guys are playing next year, such as Slowley, Rice, Mike Mathews, etc?
i heard lineman joe silberzweig and john zoppo also made the team. both are playing D1-AA
Kevin,
Although I would have loved to have Section1Recruiting (actually John Malone) get involved in picking the team (like NJ does with having Chris Melvin of Elite Recruits pick their team), I had no part in actually selecting the team. That fell to Joe Vito who is the Head Coach this year, and is the Head Coach at LI power Roosevelt HS. I helped Coach Vito get film from any players from Section 1 that he was considering selecting for the team that he had not received yet, and John helped him out with the names of any players that he thought should be nominated to play in the game. Coach Vito solicited film from coaches around NY State, and then formed a committee of coaches from Section 8 & 11 to actually select the team. There is a non-official roster floating around out there (the link was under another blog entry), but I’m waiting on an email from Coach Vito to confirm who has been selected from Section 1 (I can confirm that Samad, Paris and Markell have been selected, but only because I coach at New Rochelle). Coach Vito stressed that this year’s team was not going to be selected based on where a player was attending college, but based on the committee’s evaluation of film, and recommendations from high school coaches. I’m excited to go to the game this year, played at Rutgers on Sunday June 8th, the day after the Section1Recruiting Player Evaluation Day at New Rochelle High School.
Parents and High School Football Players:
1)Before you consider a Recruiting service sit down with your High School Football Coach and get an “honest” evaluation. It may not be what you want to hear but trust me if you are a College Football Prospect he will be the first one to tell you.
2)Sit down with your High School guidance counselor and make sure you are recruitable from an Academic standpoint these two people, unlike a recruiting services, are not interested just in “YOUR MONEY”.
a) Are you an ELITE high school Football Player ie: are you BIG Enough, Fast Enough, and Strong Enough?
b) Your HS Coach will tell you if any what level of College Football you are suited for.
c)DO NOT pay Hundreds of Dollars just for a 40 yards dash time and a College Football Coaches email address. You can get those online anytime. If your a prospect a Coach would love to hear from you(THe Player) personally.
Recruiting Services are interested in YOUR MONEY first, YOUR MONEY second and YOUR MONEY third! IF your an ELTE Player trust me they will find you. Dont Pay MONEY for anything unless you know first if you qualify ACADEMICALLY.
If a service considers you without this they are a SCAM!
Anyone who says that OHIO STATE recruits 70% of their players from Ohio because of budget constraints is a FOOL. Ohio State is a National Power that spends Millions of Dollars on their Football program and generate Millions of Dollars from it each year it funs most of their entire athletic program! The Ohio Valley is a National Hotbed for HS Football along with Florida and Texas/Oklahoma. Coaches who can recruit those areas succesfully are extremely sucessful year in and year out.
If you ask a Recruiting Service where their personnel played College Football it will generally be very revealing and trust me you dont need a service to play in those places.
High School Coach,
Very well put. If I said it once I said it 1000 times. Unless you are an Elte D1 athelete. The first thing any College coach will ask a High School AD or Coach is. How are the students grades. I have seen athletes who could play at tons of D3 @ D2 schools turned away because of grades. Parents.. Please be aware.. No grades, no play. Very simple..
Poughkeepsie’s Darrell Carter and Moquan Dickens will also be representing Section 1.
Tax Man, High School Coach wasn’t even close. The only thing he said that was true was “no grades, no play.” Everything else he said is so wrong it’s not even funny. The guy obviosuly doesn’t have a clue how that stuff works. The scary part is if kids listen to him and they waste opportunities. It’s ignorant comments by guys like “high school coach” (cmon, does anyone really beleive this guy is a high schoiol coach) that is so dangerous.
Kevin,
As of right now as per Head Coach Joe Vito, these are the players from Section 1 on the Roster (I do believe the roster is subject to change based on players’ confriming participation).
John Zoppo,JJCR
Samad Wagstaff, Paris Walker, and Markell Rice, New Rochelle
Antoine McGill, Clarkstown South
I’m not sure when the official roster will be released, and I don’t know why others are reporting that there are additonal players on the roster. All I can do is tell you what the Head Coach of the team told me.
Tax Man,
High School Coach is 100% accurate.
Not Even Close(Keith Fagan) has no clue, how can anyone even begin to say that Ohio State only recruits regionally because of “limited recruiting budget”. What a Dope! My nephew played high school football in Ohio and the level of HS Football in that area is unbelievable! Penn State, Purdue, Ohio State, ND and to a lesser extent Michigan are all over those kids. The recruiting is so competive it isnt even funny. They only go south for skill positions, as Greg Schiano says, the state of Florida is where the speed is.
I have heard things about Section1/Keith Fagan…none of it any good. Another case of being in it for the buck$. Kids and Parents save your money.
Consult your coach and guidance couselor first.
I have to agree with Steve. Talk to your guidance counsler first. If you don’t have the grades. why spend the money on an evaluation day? I know a couple kids at my sons school who were recruited hard by D2 & D3 programs. They were above averege football player who were ranked in the top 10 of thier class. They checked the grades first, then asked for the tapes. On the down side. There was a kid who was a top running back. Low grades, the schools stayed away. Just some food for thought. My sons friends did not attend an evaluation day. All was done through the coach, parents and kids.
Timely article from USA Today on college football recruiting and homegrown talent – http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/2008-04-21-draft-database-cover_N.htm
A quote from STACK Magazine. “According to (USC Head Coach Pete) Carroll, the hunger to compete is what gets a player noticed. Being a well-rounded athlete, playing multiple sports and attending combines and camps will make coaches pay attention to your abilities.”
Hmmm, “attending combines and camps”. So, I guess the person on here saying not to go to combines and camps knows more about recruiting, and getting noticed by college coaches then Pete Carroll.

When Pete Caroll attends Mr Fagans player evaluation day I will fork over the money and send my son.
I think Pete Carrol was refering to his own camp Keith, where there are “qualified” football people running the show. Not Abbott and Costello and some fake player evaluation day…
Hey Buddy,
when you’re going around talking about grades, maybe you should check your grammar. You seem to make the same mistakes over and over again under 1000 different screen names. Notice how I used “your” and “you’re” in two different ways. Do you need a lession in “there, their, and they’re” as well. How about “to, two, and too?”
