The days after

Well, at least Mount Vernon and Peekskill can say they lost to the state champs.

As I’m sure you saw, Bishop Maginn followed up Saturday’s comeback win over Mount Vernon by beating Niagara Falls in yesterday’s AA title game. The photo above is of Maginn coach Rich Hurley (courtesy Albany Times-Union).

And Jamesville-DeWitt, which ripped Peekskill in Saturday’s A semifinal, coasted past East Hampton yesterday. (Note: The Syracuse Post-Standard did not send a reporter to Glens Falls to cover the state tournament. And some of you criticize our coverage?).

Both Jamesville and Maginn are deserved champions. Had they lost yesterday, it would have been just as hard for Mount Vernon and Peekskill to take as actually losing on Saturday.

The last 72 hours have been tough. Peekskill and Mount Vernon, two programs people go out of their way to fawn over, have been dragged through the blog and message board mud. Fingers have been pointed and coaches have been ripped. And even I got blamed for Peekskill and Mount Vernon losing, which is interesting.

The blog isn’t over by any stretch of the imagination. We’ve got the all-section (Tri-County) dinner tomorrow night, the Senior All-Star Games on the 29th and plenty of recruiting and post-season award stuff to follow.

I’ll finally be unveiling my Season Wrap-up for Class A tomorrow and follow with Class AA on Wednesday.

There is certainly something to be said for wanting the team who knocks you from the playoffs to advance all the way to the championship. Losing to the ultimate champion can temper a tough loss to some extent…..After watching Iona Prep lose a heart breaker to Bishop Ford, I find myself wanting Ford to beat Long Island Lutheran and then Jamesville-Dewitt….I much would have preferred to see Peekskill beat Ford however…

Another Irony from my own perspective. Briarcliff lost to N Salem who lost to Malverne who lost to Orlean…....Orlean plays Collegiate(private Manhattan school) in the Class “B” semifinal in the Federation Tournament….Collegiate is coached by Ray Voelkel, Brian Voelkel’s father….

very interesting about Collegiate being coached by Brian Voelkel’s dad. I’m surprised Voelkel didn’t end up there – I’m sure Iona fans are as well.

    Kevin,
Happy St Patricks day to you, whose high school sports coverage is as interesting and insightful to us as the work of other great Irish and Irish-American writers like .Joyce, Fitzgerald, Yeats, Keats, Swift, O’Hara and myriad others is to fans of that type of literature

THE SECTION 1 AWARDS DINNER IS TONIGHT FOLLOWED BY THE TRI-COUNTY ALLSTAR GAMES ALONG WITH THE 62ND ANNUAL CYP TOURNEY. NOTHING BETTER THAN THAT.
MANY OF THE BEST PLAYERS WILL BE PLAYING AT SUNY-PURCHASE AND THE CYP GYM IN PORT CHESTER NEXT WEEKEND. GET READY FOR ONE LAST HURRAH FOR WESTCHESTER BBALL.

DONT FORGET THAT KEV JONES, MOOKIE AND KILPATRICK WILL BE PLAYING AT THE JORDAN BRAND REGIONAL GAME AT MSG AT 6:30PM ON APRIL 19TH

    Hey Kevin,
I don’t know if you heard, but our Varsity Girls Coach from Leake & Watts, George Burton passed away, last Monday, March 24th at the age of 64.
He was the girls coach since the 2002-03 season and won back to back Class ‘D’ Titles in the 2004-05 season & the 2005-06 season.
I’m wondering if you guys can write an article on his bio and if there are any pictures of him in your archives.
Contact me via my cell phone or e-mail for more details.
There were hundreds who came to view his wake last Friday.
His wife and family would love to see a brief article on his behalf,
    Thanks, Steve Berkowitz, L & W A.D.
