Class B regional final: North Salem vs. Malverne

March
8

1:30: MALVERNE WINS 57-56. Details in a second.

Ok, here is what happened in the final 24 seconds. NS had the ball up 56-55 with 24 seconds left. Josh O’Neil got stripped—possibly fouled—and Malverne had the ball. Malverned missed its first two shots but got the offensive rebound both times and then Shamel White had a tip-in with six seconds left. NS wasn’t granted a timeout until 4.2 seconds left. After the timeout, NS had trouble getting the ball in, and when it finally did, it was a bit out of sorts. NS was unable to get a shot off before the buzzer. It did not advance the ball beyond halfcourt.

1:28: Malverne leads 57-56 with 4.2 seconds left. NS has the ball under its own basket.

1:27: NS leads 56-55 with 23.4 seconds left. After O’Neil hit his free throw, D.J. Williams came down and hit a 3-pointer for Malverne. NS will have the ball after the timeout.

1:25: NS leads 55-52 with 36.7 seconds left. Josh O’Neil is about to go the free throw line for the second of two free throws after a timeout.

1:23: NS leads 54-52 with 1:01 left. Malverne has the ball.

1:19: GAME IS TIED 52-52 with 2:11 left. Marc Miller just hit a putback to tie the score. It’s the first tie score since 4-4. NS is on a 14-2 run.

1:17: Malverne leads 52-50 with 3:20 left in the game.

1:16: Malverne leads 50-48 with 4:07 left. Greg Shea hit a 3-pointer. The place is going insane.

1:13: Malverne leads 50-45 with 6:10 left. Tom Kruze just hit a 3-pointer. A 7-0 NS run to start quarter.

1:10: Malverne leads 50-42 with 6:52 left. Marc Miller hit two baskets to start quarter.

1:07: Malverne leads 50-38 after three. Dashiem Cherry hit a 3-pointer for Malverne at the buzzer. It’s Malverne’s biggest lead of the game.

1:02: Malverne up 45-34 with 2:05 left in third.

12:57: Malverne up 39-32 with 3:53 left in third.

12:52: Malverne up 37-30 with 5:35 left in third.

12:48: Malverne up 31-28 with 7:15 left in third.

12:36: Malverne leads 30-24 at the half. Some stats: Greg Shea leads NS with 8 points. Marc Miller has four points and nine rebounds, and has only taken two shots. NS coach Henry Sassone has been imploring his team to get the ball inside more, but the fast pace has made that difficult. NS has 19 turnovers. Kadeem Bell has 10 points for Malverne, including three 3-pointers. Malverne has hit six 3-pointers in the game.

12:27: Malverne leads 26-22 with 2:18 left in half.

12:23: Malverne leads 23-15 with 4:35 left in half. Josh O’Neil is really struggling thus far for NS. He’s 0-for-6 from the field. I really think NS has to avoid getting into a running game.

12:21: Still 18-13 Malverne. 5:30 to play in half. Refs calling very few fouls—both ways.  For those of you who like to say “let them play” you would love this game.

12:14: Malverne leads 18-13 after the first quarter. Malverne has hit four 3-pointers so far, and most have been open looks. The pace might be just a bit quicker than NS would prefer.  NS had 10 turnovers in the first quarter.

12:08: Malverne leads 13-9 with 2:46 left in the first. Greg Shea has 6 points for NS. Game has tremendous pace right now. I still can’t fathom how many NS fans are here.

12:05: Game tied 4-4 with 4:45 left in first.

12:01: Jeff Gold here providing a live blog. Game has just started. Scoreless with 7:00 left in first. NS fans outnumber Malverne fans by an 87-1 ratio.

11:40 p.m. – Alex Myers here greeting you from sunny SUNY New Paltz! Okay, so I lied. It’s pouring up here just like it is in Westchester. Genius that I am didn’t bring an umbrella again like last night even though I knew it was raining… We’re about 30 minutes away from the Class B regional final between North Salem and Section 8’s Malverne.

Incredibly, half of this large gym is almost completely filled with North Salem fans that have been here for about an hour according to fellow Team Journal News member Rick Carpiniello. What an amazing crowd. I saw a bunch of North Salem-ites tailgating in one of the parking lots before hand as well. Those people better get in here fast if they want a seat.

Jeff Gold will be blogging for this game and I’ll handle those duties for the following game, the Class C regional final between Tuckahoe and Friends Academy. So keep it here for all the latest.

    NS won’t hold on….

  7. Westhoops

    Let’s close em out NS!

  8. PHS81

It’s lookin pretty grim for Malverne. The Section 1 party looks like it’s getting bigger for next week.

  9. Westhoops

Can we start calling NS the “cardiac kids”? Unbelievable.

  10. PHS81

    Sliding the other way…

  11. Peeks Fan

HAHA i told you all NS would lose hahah

nice job choking in the end

  12. Westhoops

Brutal loss. Great season NS. We’re all proud of you.

  13. ...

    Nice call Peeks…

    Good Season NS

  14. Westhoops

Show some class Peeksfan…Great season NS.

  15. Malverne

F#$& North Salem. That’s what happens when you don’t have a go to player.

  16. Peeks Fan

I know I’m sorry just got a little excited…Good season NS.

  17. Malverne Fan

Good job NS…tough loss..Atleast we didn’t play Briarcliff because i don’t think we woulda had a shot with them..no offense.

    Good season North Salem.

  18. EastHoops

Call them the team that stopped getting “every” call at the regionals due to their coaches relationship with the Section 1 officials. as Kevin said 78-29 free throws…

  19. ...

Yea NS really had the officials on there side throughout the playoffs, especially in the Bcliff game.

  20. hoop fan

NS, ns fan, NS Nation, ns student, jerrysalemander, westhoops, ns parent, NS player and so on,

Nice run, but as fate would have it your luck ran out. It was clear that for most of the season you were quiet, up until you had a “little” success. Then you resorted to critisizing Kevin and taking over the #1 position on the blogs most obnoxious list. Mocking other teams and their efforts. A classic case of the pot calling the kettle black…

  21. Rick Carpiniello

Why do you people—some of you people—have to act like idiots?

  22. joe b

THANK RICK…You beat me to the punch..Sect 1 should be proud of NS ,not envious that they sent a good representative to the dance.

  23. It's the Briarcliff Fans

Carp, don’t get all bent out of shape. It’s just the same obnoxious, jealous briarcliff fans that don’t have a clue in life, and have shown on a consistent basis what idiots they are. let them keep making fools of themselves.

  24. NSnation

    To the North Salem Tigers,

Your hometown thanks you for an incredible ride. You’ve made your town, parents, friends and classmates incredibly proud.

    The Nation thanks you.

  25. Papa Bear

Great Season NS. You proved you are an excellent Team and did Section 1 proud. Best of luck to Marc Miller and the rest of the seniors.

  26. Sixmoreouts

An incredible game to witness. One moment I’ll remember for a while is the packed NS stands going relatively silent in an apparent “Oh, Sh*t” moment when Malverne first entered the gym. They looked like the Syracuse Orangemen, rather than some high school team. The looks on the Tigers’ at that moment, I thought, reflected a similar sentiment.

When game started, it was apparent that NS was going to struggle with Malverne’s full court pressure, and that never really changed for the balance of the game. Even when NS broke the press, they were never really able to convert any easy baskets, which is usually the achilles heel of pressing teams.

Turnovers and 3-point baskets by Malverne did NS in in the long run. 19 turnovers in the first half? My god. I bet they had at least 30 for the game then, which makes it even more incredible that the final margin was just one point.

NS did show that they could half-court it with anyone once Malverne (questionably) slowed the game down some in the fourth quarter. You could see Malverne coming unglued as NS clawed its way back. One could argue that what snapped Malverne out of their funk was the forced sense of urgency once they were suddenly down four with 35 seconds left. It forced them to go back to the “hair-on-fire” style that got them the lead in the first place. And in the end, fittingly, it was a three and a forced turnover, that put them back on top for good.

In the end, an exhilarating comeback today by NS at the end of an exhilarating season. The Tigers were 35 seconds away from a modern day “Hoosiers-type win”. But what heart the team showed! And kudos to both NS players and NS fans for doing the right thing and giving Malverne their props during the award ceremony. They got it done in a hostile setting.

Today truly was the essence of high school basketball at its very best.

  27. steve

    great season NS!!

tough loss, refs missed a few key calls though, but nothing away from malverne they deserved a win today, great game for both teams

  28. ...

great game. its been a ride, thanks to kevin for the coverage hes given us, this was the happyest yet saddest game of ball ive ever witnessed. the fourth period made it seem as if any thing was possible and it seemed as if ns could win it all, but i guess theres no happy endings only heartbreaks. congrats to best ns basketball season in schools history.

  29. Jerry Salamander

Aight well first off those Refs blew the game and NS’s miracle season…Oniell was totally hacked, every1 could see that… i hope if the refs read this they will realize how they screwed over and entire teams season with one missed call. I thought the refs were supposed to be pro’s when instead they got refs that should probably be reffing 3rd and 4th grade boys recreation league.

  30. NS Dad

To the NS Team – Thank you! You did an amazing job both on and off the court. You might have lost the game today but you are truly WINNERS to the North Salem Community! Keep up the great work – you continue to make us all Proud!!! Congratulations on a fantastic season!!!

  31. ...

Haha blaming the refs…the refs are the only reason u got this far…

  32. Jerry Salamander

Hey … i bet u are a stupid Briarcliff fan that is just mad that Joe “the bro” Lombardi didnt get u to this stage… sorry our team is better but just calm down, Its not only Ns fans that r complaining bout the refs. Devaney even said josh was fouled.. read the blog loser

  33. lol

lol you cant complain about the ref’s now…comon, without them you wouldnt have been there!

  34. Section 1

    Jerry Salamander

As you continue to embarrass yourself and the NS fans with your rants and dumb comments, Kevin said “Josh O’Neil got stripped—possibly fouled—” Kevin also noted that your “title run” consisted of you getting 78 free throw attempts to the oppositions 29. Live by the refs…Die by the refs…

Check the score, it appears that today it is you who is the loser and why you continue to hate on kids is really sad. By the way your the only person to mock any player thus far on this thread. Show a little class and dignity.

North Salem, Congrats on a Great Run. We will try to excuse poor Jerry!

  35. Jerry Alligator

When Devaney said we got more free throws he wasn’t implying the refs were on NS’s side dumbass…he was saying that NS takes it to the hoop better and that NS plays solid defense… dont imply

  36. Jerry Salamander

Yo section 1… u arent cool. possibly stripped… he wouldnt say that if it didnt happen… i bet u werent even at that game… im just trying to show that Ns shoulda won if it wasnt for the blown call… so shut up

  37. mike

stop talking silly people. north salem is the section 1 and 9 champ, point blank. yes i agree they got some calls in the sectionals but the bottom line is they had a great season. something the players and coaches will never forget. congrats on a great seson and keep your head held up.

  38. Logic

Papa Bear, you are a classy guy saying those nice things to NS fans. I give you respect.

  39. ...

he actually said POSSIBLY fouled…so learn to read buddy…and im not a briarcliff fan so shut your mouth.

  40. Jerry Salamander

wait… y would he say possibly if it wasnt true? he just doesnt want to make the refs feel bad that they blew the game… so … ur just a loser that NS prolly beat at 1 point or another this year. Good year NS

  41. Section 1

    Poor Jerry

He would say “possibly” because he didnt know for sure. He said that “Josh O’Neil got stripped”. The way it works is.. no call, no foul. A little reading comprehension. Why would he say “he got stripped” if he didnt.

I didnt play against NS this year or any other nor did you play against Malverne. But I think you have proved that you are a loser, a very sore one at that.

  42. Mal- B- Ball

Stop crying about the calls. FACE IT. The BETTER TEAM won!

  43. Hoopster Fan

    Malverne Rocks.

  44. Basketball

“The way it works is.. no call, no foul.”
    -Section 1

If this is your philosophy, then i don’t understand how you can say that the refs were on North Salem’s side throughout sectionals (which you were implying when you noted the “78 free throw attempts to the oppositions 29”). North Salem beat every team fairly, and Malverne beat North Salem fairly… let’s leave it at that.

  45. gshea

A proud parent of a NS player – being at today’s game was awesome! Anyone who is trying to take away anything from the coaches and players from NS – who werent’t there today, are just jealous of who was there – NORTH SALEM!!!!! For those BB fans in attendance saw a great game won by a team that deserved to be in the STATe FINAL 4 – Malvern!

To Briarcliff – again great season; rally around the GIRL’S TEAM for a STATE TITLE – because BOYS are always going to be remembered as Class B Section 1 Runners Up – 2007/2008! GET OVER IT

  46. gshea

    LOL –

It’s impertive that you seek serious medical attention – again North Salem beat Briarcliff. There’s no way second best would do better than a one point loss to Malvern.

    Cleansing breathe…...repeat

  47. gshea

    Hoop Fan –

We – North Salem have kept a very low profile with people like yourself ripping a “feel good” story about a great bunch of kids – not as talented, but better team chemistry than any other in Section 1 B – resulting in a championship.

Sorry but anyone taking pot-shots now is just sour grapes.

  48. gshea

    Peeks Fan

Why you are rooting against a group of players that represent ALL that’s good in basketball is beyond me.

  49. gshea

    Malverne –

How do you reply to a comment that lacks any sophistication????

NS played every game with more class and more character than ANY of the competition they played against – PERIOD!

  50. gshea

    Malverne Fan –

can’t comment on your comment because Briarcliff wasn’t good enough to get out of the County Center.

    OOCH!

  51. gshea

    East Hoops

Get over a ref calling what they see.

    76 – 70 Nough said

  52. chris lange

mr. shea you are my hero…i want this support next year when i make my come back…woot woot

  53. gshea

    Hoops Fan

    Don’t understand your comment….

NS was amything but obnoxious. Stood back and took all the BS and silly comments from BCLIFF and just played and beat them soundly.

    Move on or get help.

  54. Malverne

hahaahaaaa thats the funniest thing i have ever seen

  55. gshea

    ... ...

You need to get a clue!!!!

Drunk, fat and stupid is no way to go through life son….

Stay away from the weed too.

  56. gshea

    Malverne

Funniest thing you’ve seen ….. Please don’t make me comment – that’s too open an opportunity to respond.

Again – class is something to appreciate. Obviously too complicated a concept for you. Let’s stick to “See spot run” – that appears to be more your speed.

  57. ...

gshea chill with the posting…i think you actually have half the posts in this blog…

  58. NSnation

    ... ...

You display the intelligence of a mid-sized trout. I suggest you take up fishing instead of basketball blog posting.

  59. Malverne

You NS fans are trying to outsmart people on a place where any one can say anything they want, you’re season is over. There is nothing left to say. Get it?
    gshea,
If you are the shea that was on the NS roster, you suck. Nuff said. You can’t hide behind the rest of your teams accomplishments forever. Plain and simple-You can’t ball son.

  60. NS Tiger

North Salem played an amazing game yesterday and even though they had lost in the last 30 seconds they are still winners and everyone from North Salem is proud of them. I am not going to blame the refs or anything but there were a couple of major calls that they missed. Congratulations guys and we made it a lot farther then people were expecting us too. The 1000 North Salem fans that were at that game are all proud and great season

  61. NSnation

    Malverne,

North Salem, the town, the team, the coach (if you watched Channel 12) have all accepted the Malverne loss; if you were at the game, we stayed on our feet and applauded their team’s victory. They were the better team. There is no argument.

However, it is sad that there are still, I’m guessing Briarcliff fans, masquerading with names like “Malverne” who obviously haven’t accepted their team’s 2nd place finish in Section 1, which is sad.

By the way, Greg Shea played a great game yesterday, if you actually had been there. His shooting kept NS in it.

And last but not least, you wrote, “you’re season is over”. That actually means “you are season is over.” You may want to repeat 4th grade English before writing anything more here.

This is my last post on the topic. It signifies my last thoughts on congratulating my own team, North Salem on all their accomplishments, and all the other teams who either competed or are continuing on.

If you wish to continue to spend your time writing ignorant, negative and grammatically wrong posts, feel free to waste your time.

We’ve moved on to cheering for our spring sports teams, starting today.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

  62. ...

this is not english class NSnation get out of here

Dont worry, when the medication kicks in youll be fine! Your team did a nice job, its okay to let it all out, feel better now? Drinking and weed on a HS hoop blog? So much for class and character…

I got nothing but love for ya…

  67. NS REP

I’m from north salem and i saw the whole game up close…there were some missed calls but nothing huge so people really need to stop complaining…Overall the refs were pretty consistent with letting the physical play go….i believe if north salem played malverne again they would surely have the upper hand, but thats not how it is…malverne played a great game and in the clutch, even with a lucky tip in, came through…but that’s high school basketball…..great season north salem…for a school that was only 4 students over the line for B u did a great job.

all i gotta say is next year, soccer season….watch out for North Salem!

  68. Sanity

... and mike thomas, all I can say to you is:

stay in school and try and stay off the pipe.

  69. steve

    ...

did it hurt when you lsot to us in sectional finals? so shut your mouth

  70. NS

    HEY…Says

Just got back on the blog to see the utter nonsense that is you…
    The question posed to you was;
    “Does it hurt?”

does it HURT to be such an A-HOLE????????

that’s what I’ve been wondering this whole time reading your drivel…

Great Season NS Tigers and know that no matter what NS is in the books as the SECTION B CHAMPS!!!!!!! Chew on that …Says and every other moron on this blog slamming North Salem.

Well Done Tigers as always you make us proud with your sportsmanship and remember at least your team will not be remembered for the poor display Briarcliff showed 3,000 people…
