Live from New Paltz: North Salem wins, 59-52

March
3

9:19: Just finished my story and am about to pack up and leave New Paltz. What an incredible effort by North Salem. The Tigers played well, although not quite as good as they did on Saturday against Briarcliff. But they made all the plays necessary to win a game against a very good Red Hook squad.

Stats and notes from the game
North Salem (23-1)
Josh O’Neill:
MVP of the game in my mind. He had 24 points, eight coming in the fourth. Dictated the tempo on both ends of the floor.
Marc Miller: 19 points and 12 rebounds. He had 10 points, five rebounds and two steals in the fourth quarter. He had two amazing and-ones in the fourth, including the decisive basket on a put-back with 24 seconds left.
Karl Miras: 12 rebounds and solid defensive play. Even though he just six points, his ability to get into the lane opened up space against Red Hook’s tight zone.
Ryan Spillane: Came off the bench and was brilliant defending Red Hook big man Kyle Hall, a 6-foot-6 center. Hall had 15 points in the first 10 minutes of the game. Once the 6-2 Spillane started guarding him, Hall had only two points on three shots the rest of the game.
Greg Budetti: Finally woke the team up after a slow start, coming off the bench with a critical coast-to-coast, and-one basket off a rebound. He had five points and five rebounds.
Greg Shea: No points but a very good game defensively. Kept Red Hook’s guards from getting open looks from the perimeter.
From the line: North Salem hit 21 of 25 free throws, including 6 of 7 in the fourth quarter.
Hitting the boards: North Salem outrebounded Red Hook 22-11 in the second half.
The streak: North Salem has won 23 in a row.

Red Hook (16-6)
Kyle Hall:
17 points and eight rebounds. A gifted player who can really step back and hit shots with a hand in his face. The problem was Spillane never allowed the Raiders to get him the ball often enough.
Spencer Dalzell: Sophomore had 8 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers in the third that I thought was going to bury North Salem.
Gedney Mosher: 13 points.
Austin Carrothers: Played really well after missing the Section 9 final with a wrist injury. The 6-5 forward scored eight points.
Foul trouble: The fouls were 13-4 in North Salem’s favor in the first half.

7:21: It’s over. North Salem makes its free throws and beats Red Hook, 59-52, in the Class B state regional semifinal at SUNY New Paltz. 7:18: Miller makes the free throw, makes it 57-52, before Red Hook missed a 3-pointer. Budetti gets the rebound. There’s 18.7 seconds left. North Salem should be moving on.

7:16: Marc Miller puts back his own miss with 24.9 seconds left, is fouled and is at the line with North Salem ahead 56-52. Incredible play. The place went insane.

7:15: Three straight empty possessions for each team. Kevin Hourihan missed an open 3 for Red Hook. Karl Miras got the rebound with 40 seconds left. North Salem ball, up 54-52, with 38.4 left. Timeout.

7:13: O’Neill hits both. Obviously.

7:12: It’s 52-52 with 2:08 left. Great game. Huge turnout in the stands by North Salem. Easily 1,000 fans. I just realized how loud it was in here. O’Neill just fouled and is going to the line for two.

7:07: On cue, O’Neill makes the pass of the year, a no-look feed into Miller, who is fouled as he makes the basket. Free throw falls. It’s 50-47 NS.

7:04: Six straight points by North Salem has tied the game at 47-47 with 5:18 left. O’Neill has 2. I get the feeling he’s about to put the team on his back and carry them to a victory. Just a hunch.

6:59: Red Hook leads 45-41 after three quarters. The Raiders have really come up big defensively. They just had two huge blocks on North Salem’s final possession of the quarter. North Salem looks a little timid going to the basket all of a sudden.

6:55: Austin Carrothers has hit back-to-back long jumpers as part of a 13-2 Red Hook run. It leads 45-40 with 1:12 left in the third quarter. Red Hook has hit five straight shots — three 3s and two shots with Carrothers’ feet on the line. Timeout.

6:53: Three straight 3-pointers by Red Hook — the first two by Spencer Dalzell — has given RH a 41-38 lead with 2:02 left.

6:48: An 8-2 run to start the half has put North Salem ahead, 38-32 with five minutes left in the third. O’Neill and Miller have four points apiece this half. Great defense so far by the Tigers.

6:36: Halftime leaders
North Salem
— Josh O’Neill has 10 points; Karl Miras has six points and four rebounds; Marc Miller has five points and three rebounds; Greg Budetti has five points off the bench; Ryan Spillane has four points off the bench.
Red Hook — Kyle Hall has 15 points and six rebounds. He missed his first four shots but is 7 for 8 since; Gedney Mosher has seven points.
Notes: North Salem has shot 12 of 14 from the line. Ten of its 20 points that quarter came at the stripe. … Red Hook has four starters with two fouls. … Carrothers has played really well for Red Hook. He’s the guy who missed the last game with the wrist injury.

6:34: Halftime. It’s 30-30.

6:31: North Salem is getting every call. The fouls are 14-6. Tie game at 30-30 with 30 seconds left.

6:26: Two free throws by O’Neill make it 25-23 Red Hook with 3:44 left. Four Red Hook starters have two fouls, including Carrothers and Hall.

6:20: Greg Budetti just came off the bench, went coast to coast and was fouled as he made a wild lay-up. About to shoot the free throw. Red Hook leads 23-18 but the momentum is shifting. Made the free throws. It’s 23-19.

6:16: It’s 19-10 after the first.

6:13: Maybe it’s the hangover from winning on Saturday night, but North Salem looks like it’s moving in slow motion on defense right now. It trails 17-9 with 45.8 seconds left in the first quarter. Kyle Hall is eating them up. He’s stepping back and knocking down shots and has six rebounds with his 11 points.

6:11: North Salem was a little slow out of the gates but it has hung tough. It trails 15-9 with 1:33 left in the first quarter. Kyle Hall, Red Hook’s big man, has 11 points and six rebounds already.

5:59: Red Hook’s 6-foot-5 forward Austin Carrothers is in the starting lineup. He missed the Section 9 final because of a wrist injury.

5:42: Got here safe and sound and the wireless is working great. I’ll give updates as much as possible from the game. Tip off is 12 minutes.

3:47 p.m.: I’m about to hop in the car and drive up to New Paltz for tonight’s Class B state regional semifinal between North Salem and Section 9’s Red Hook.

Hopefully, the internet access up there will be good and I’ll be able to provide live updates during the game. Unfortunately, there will not be a writer from our staff designated to do the updates like last week at the County Center. I will, however, do my best.

Stay tuned.

  1. BasketballFather

After watching the two teams for a quarter, aside from the score, how do you think North Salem matches up with Red Hook?

  2. ...

Salem is getting every call just like last game…

  3. Kevin Devaney Jr.

Talent wise, they’re pretty evenly matched. Hall and Miller are very comparable in skill, size and agility. Josh O’Neill is a better guard than anybody Red Hook has. His and Greg Shea’s ability to get in the paint in the second half will decide the outcome.

Greg Budetti should be Sixth Man of the Year based on his performance so far. He’s been a major spark.

  4. West Hoops

    Kevin,

Couldn’t agree more with your analysis NS’s guard play being the deciding factor in the 2nd half. Although it sounds like Mr. Miller needs to keep Red Hook’s bigs off the glass.

  5. BasketballFather

Wow, this sounds like another great one. What is the foul situation?

  6. BasketballFather

    Kevin,

Great job on the blog. Enjoyed it.

Congrats North Salem. Sounded like a great game. They have a lot of heart.

  7. West Hoops

Congrats to Henry Sassone and the Tigers! Anybody know who’s up next? Go Tigers!!

  8. BasketballFather

Oh, and by all means, keep picking against them.

  9. NS Fan

Way to go North Salem!!! Congratulations to you all!! Good Luck in the next game.

  10. prosp

NS plays winner of Section 8 and Section 11, they were supposed to play today, but were rescheduled. I just found this “Center Moriches will face Port Jefferson on Wednesday at Longwood High School”

    Go NS Tigers!!

  11. prosp

Oops, I’m wrong, NS plays the winner of Malverne & Center Moriches.

  12. West Hoops

Nice job on the live updates as usual Kevin. Who would of thought NS would be here right now? Incredible. I know those LI teams can be tough…Let’s hope the clock doesn’t strike midnight anytime soon.

  13. rileygirl

RedHook always has nice talent. Neros jr. year, they had a great team, They had more talent than Peekskill, but they were completely intimidated by Peekywood and the County Center. Looks like they collapsed once again in a big spot.

  14. Unbiased

Huge win for the Tigers – sounds well deserved – knocking down those free throws put the nails in the coffin. I didn’t feel good about this one coming in but obviously NS did and that’s all that mattered. Hope they can keep the run alive in the next round.

  15. Pok Journal

Before anyone says anything about Red Hook “collapsing”, take a step back and think about what those kids have gone through the last 72 hours. It’s probably not news in Westchester but it is all over the news in Dutchess County, just check our newspaper.

A 14 year old girl who was a Freshman at Red Hook High School was killed in an automobile accident Friday night around 8:30. She was in a car with 4 other kids, three of who are also Red Hook kids. One of her best friends was in the car and is currently in critical condition at Albany Medical. The driver of the car is a 2007 Red Hook HS graduate. This was an accident in its purest form. There were no drugs, alcohol, or speeding involved. According to the police report, weather was an apparent factor.

The kids in Red Hook are a mess, and understandably so. Red Hook is a small, tight-knit community, a town in which everyone either knows the families involved or knows someone who knows the families involved. I applaud the efforts of the kids on the team, not only for playing through this tonight, but for having the strength to play for the Section 9 championship last Saturday less than 24 hours after this tragedy.

Take nothing away from North Salem for an impressive come-from-behind victory. Their players and coaches represent what youth sports should be all about. I wish them luck and hope that their victorious path takes them to Glens Falls.

Even more importantly, can we please associate some positive comments on this game and not belittle kids who did something special the last 72 hours, something in fact that many adults would never be able to do under similar circumstances.

  16. blah blah

Hey Pok Journal… either you need to get your eyes examined, or I do. I read and re-read the article and did not see one comment belittling anybody. I’m sorry to hear about the tragedy that struck the Red Hook community. However, that’s no excuse for you to post here and cast aspersions when none are deserved. Maybe you should spend more time helping to ease the pain in your community than posting on this blog and just making $hit up.

  17. Pok Journal

Blah Blah, when translated, means “Jack A-s”. Go read Rileygirl’s post, which reads as follows:

RedHook always has nice talent. Neros jr. year, they had a great team, They had more talent than Peekskill, but they were completely intimidated by Peekywood and the County Center. Looks like they collapsed once again in a big spot.

If you need that last line of Rileygirl’s explained to you, I’d be happy to do so. You have no idea of the effect this has had on my family and our friends in the community. Likewise, you have no idea as to the amount of work my family has put in counseling kids trying to deal with this.

I accept your apology in advance for your ignorant, out of line ending comment in your last post.

  18. NS REP

    Pok Journal

If the Redhook team does not have the ability to put all matters aside, no matter how dramatic, they do not deserve to win the game..thats what these big playoff games are all about…keeping composure in big situations…so stop trying to act like ur not making excuses when thats exactly what your doing…North Salem was the better team…hands down…Players like Tom Kruze and Greg Shea did not play as well as they usually, especially shea offensively…but they still won the game…and people are criticizing red hook’s basketball skills…not what has gone on in ther community…it is obviously a terrible tragedy which i was sorry to hear about….but north salem just flout out shut Red Hook down on the court…..keep it going NS

  19. NS REP

by the way, the refs made some terrible calls…Miller got all ball twice, same iwth josh…and they called hacks…

  20. bearification

miller hacked the hell out of lombardi and got away with it, until he was tossed into the stantion

  21. next year

No one cares about Briarcliff. You’re season is over and you will suck for the foreseeable future so please just let it go and go away forever. Good job by North Salem who continues to prove everyone wrong and get the job done.

  22. NS REP

    everyone still loves Lombardi…hes overrated

  23. Common Sense

If POK Journal is actually a representative of that paper, he or she should use their real name in posting. The language used hardly seems appropriate for a “journalist”. As much as I might disagree with Kevin Devaney of the Journal News at times, at least he has the guts to do it under his byline(Kevin—-please keep picking against NS-it seems to be working). It seems to me that the fans on both sides supported their teams to the utmost and both sides should be proud of their teams.

  24. Jerry Salamander

so.. great game by NS… NS fans were just so loud, they out numbered Red Hook by atleast 5:1… good job every1

  25. Jerry Salamander

Yo Kevin, y u always picking us to losse when we win everytime?... do u pick against the Celtics on a daily basis too?

  26. Ouch For The Bears

So not only did the lowlife bears lose to North Salem…North Salem didn’t choke against a Section 9 team. Niceeee.

Go North Salem, do what the Bears suck at…Win, baby!

  27. NS REP

    yeah jerry u tell him

  28. Jerry Salamander

thank you NS REP… u seem like a repectable young lad:)

  29. NS REP

too bad redhook fans wont see this blog…i’d like to see ther reactions…on facebook most were complaining about the refs..just like briarcliff and irvington had done….its starting to get old…North Salem was gettin just as screwed over as redhook in the game, if not more…so people need to lay off the refs…and what was with the lack of redhook fans…like salamander said….we outnumbered them greatly…thats just north salem at its best….

  30. Rileygirl

Im sorry to hear about the death in RedHook. I was not trying to put salt on any wounds and I will say prayers for their loss. My statement was purely on a hoops level, I was giving the program props and just stating an observation which is 100% true. Section 1 would have probably been better off had Briarcliff won the sectionals, but I do hope that NS brings home the chip. They are on one heck of a role and their coach is tremendous

  31. BigBadBear

can we just move on…the Bears are not here, Section 1 is not “better off” or worse off for that matter with NS…NS won, they are the Section 1 champs, I think we should stay postive and root for them..

    Good luck NS

  32. Jeff P.

    NS REP,

While I can certainly understand you being happy with team’s success this year, I do feel that you are out of line with your comments towards the Red Hook team and its fans. You’re running the risk of becoming every bit as obnoxious as you claim the Briarcliff posters are…

Re your comment: “and what was with the lack of redhook fans”: I think this link should help provide some perspective:

    http://www.poughkeepsiejournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080304/NEWS01/803040323

No community should ever have to deal with this type of tragedy…

Good luck to the North Salem Tigers in their quest for the state Class B championship…

  33. NS REP

and Rileygirl how would section 1 have been better…should th e best team always win..like mount vernon and peekskill did this year…no ther has to eb that underdog that comes out on top…and i think north salem is doing a pretty good job so far (23-1 i believe) of representing section 1

  34. NS

    Jeff P.
I don’t think any disrespect was intended. It’s hard to equate winning mentality with the Red Hook fan attendance at the expense of a tragic accident. NS high schoolers have also suffered tragedies unfortunately but NS fans have cooler heads and hopefully will take to heart the “5 minute rule” before they hit send

  35. rileygirl

NS rep I couldnt understand your post.NS had a great year and Im not gonna dog them to prove my point. Niagra Falls last year was upset on their way to Glenns Falls, They didnt even win their sectionals. Niagara would have gave MV a great run.The other team was better that day. I think most observers would say that Briarcliff has more talent than NS, lets hope that NS uses that talent and wins a title.

  36. NSnation

    Next up: Malverne

  37. JOJO knows

    Kevin,

    Internet, not internet

  38. prosp

Here is an article on last night’s game, Malverne against Center Moriches:

    http://www.longislandbasketball.com/index.html

Malverne’s record doesn’t seem indicative of the team’s capabilities. I didn’t realize that Malverne was last year’s state champs.

I’m feeling that there will be a very large contingent of NS fans at the game. Looking forward to it.

    Go Tigers!
