Class AA boys final: No. 1 Mount Vernon vs. No. 2 Poughkeepsie

March
2

1:37 p.m. – The Mount Vernon players are still coming out to receive their awards. Public Address Announcer Rich Leaf just asked “Do we have enough for the assistants?” Fortunately, they did.

Okay, well one down and three to go on this Championship Sunday. So far, I’ve kept my streak alive of bringing about blowouts. Hopefully, this will change as the day goes on.

Time to magically jump over to Josh Thomson’s Sixth Man blog for the next few hours where I’ll be keeping everyone out there in cyberland up to date on both the Class AA and Class A championship games.

I’ll be back later for tonight’s Class A boys championship between Peekskill and Port Chester if you can’t get a seat or are too lazy to come. That’s all for now.

1:34 p.m. - It’s a final. Mount Vernon has defeated Poughkeepsie 75-52 to win its eighth Section 1 Championship in nine years. The Knights are already dressed in their newest edition of championship t-shirts and their huge coaching staff (which actually spilled into a second row behind the bench) is on the court as well making them look more like a football team.

Sherrod Wright finished with a game-high 29 points and Kevin Jones had 27 points and 15 rebounds. Duane Clark led Poughkeepsie with 17 points.

Jones and Wright each made the All-Tournament team. Jones was named the MVP.

Back in a moment after I enjoy “One Shining Moment” being blared over the loudspeaker.

  2. RC

Any chest thumping or arrogance from the MV players, or teenage joy?

  3. Haywood

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMEN you may shake the pastors hand on your way out. NEXT GAME tuesday MOUNT VERNON VS. MINSINK VALLEY 7:00PM SUNY NEW PALTZ THEY BEAT NEWBURGH LAST NIGHT

As Mount Vernon is dominating this game, I am watching Cavs- Bulls. I see Ben Gordon on the court and I think that America is neither Red Sox Nation nor Yankee Country. It is Mount Vernon nation. You can find Mount Vernon alum anywhere you go. And I bet the people in Hawaii that watch the tourney that MV goes to every year, loves them because they are so explosive. MOUNT VERNON NATION!

  5. Haywood

WHO GOT MVP WHO MADE ALL TORNAMENT

  6. ahmazzazing

who was the MVP? Wright or Jones?

  7. vern all day

Bemjamin on Pitt, Lowe on Umass, Mitchell on Florida, Coburn on Rutgers, Gordon in the NBA, Jones soon to be on West Virgina, and then Sherrod wherever he chooses…What a dynastyy!!

  8. rileygirl

Anyone who questions whether or not MV plays the game the correct way has never seen the team under this staff. I think the chest bumping and idiocy was covered in the class B game.

  9. RC

    Rileygirl,

That’s part of the point I was trying to make!

As much as North Salem’s victory on Saturday was based on a Team concept, Mt. Vernon’s victory can be attributed to having a great level head Program and Community behind it.

  10. Jayden

Kevin Jones was the MVP for the tournament. Sherrod Wright made the all Tournament team.

Poughkeepesie came in short handed and they gave it a nice try. I would have loved to see them with all of their players. They would not have won, but it would be nice to see a team at full strenght.

I wrote last week that Referees are human, just like the players and coaches. I know this will be taken as criticism of the refs, but I hope it isn’t. The refs did not have a good game today. The only favor they gave Mt Vernon, was not giving Bob Cimmino the tech that he was clearly trying to get. I never saw Mt Vernon’s coach that upset.

Congratulations to Mount Vernon on winning yet another Section 1 Class AA championship. As a Poughkeepsie fan, I admit that this game was tough to watch, but MV demonstrated why they are one of the country’s elite basketball programs. As Jayden pointed out, not having Tay Webb and Moquan Dickens did hurt PK. Still, even if they had played, it might have only made the Knights’ margin of victory smaller. I would be absolutely shocked if the Knights don’t reach Glens Falls…

For Poughkeepsie, Antonio Williams and Duane Clark made the All-Tournament Team, as did David Zaitz from Scarsdale and (I think) John Calarco from New Ro…

Great job with the score updates this whole week, Alex!

  13. section 1 Alum

I watched this game wire to wire and by the 5 minute mark of the 1st period I knew this was over. The biggest issue was PK could not protect the basketball and the full court press provided MV with bucket after bucket.

I am a neutral fan so this was hard to watch since all I cared about was a close game. MV deserves all the credit since they forced PK into a game of turnovers. It would have been nice to see PK at full strength just so this game would have had some electricity but MV took a lead early and coasted.

It would be hard to believe MV will not get to Glenns Falls. This was the first time I saw Kevin Jones and he looked like he would have been just as happy with 10 boards and no points. He is not a selfish player and put out as much effort on the defensive side of the game as he did offensively. His body language was nothing but positive from start to finish even after questionable calls. I was just as impressed with his hustle at loose balls as I was his constant effort grabbing rebounds. He showed how many ways a dominant high school player can impact a game.

MV plays more team defense than I anticipated and that is going to take them deep into the state tourney. Good athletes and relentless pressure is the recipe they came to the County Center with. No wonder they walk away with more gold balls than anyone else.

    Congrats to MV.

Thought it was nice they introduced the class D rep from Section 1 at half-time. I would love to see them make it all the way to GF too!

  14. PO' FAN

Good game Mt. Vernon—you did it again! Poughkeepsie missed too many opportunities to keep the score close. Maybe Webb and Dickens would have made a difference, but who knows? I feel bad for them, though, having to miss the experience.

PK players and fans should be happy with this team’s record, despite today’s loss—it was a great season and I’m looking forward to the next one. Brandon James, Duane Clark, Dayvone Whitaker, and Malik Dennard are among those who will be back to make things interesting. To all of this year’s players: THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES.

Watching the Refs have a bad game today was not easy, it was as if they did not want it to be a run away, and to not call any fouls on Kevin Jones early. Like they had a game plan from the very start, especially the shorter military looking guy from another part of NYS. Never saw him before, and he had an agenda. He was doing his best to not call anything on Kevin (who honestly should have had 3 fouls in the first 5 minutes), and he let Sherrod get butchered every time he went to the basket. It was amazing and if by unimaginable possibility that game came down to a desperation full court buzzer beater ther would have been a riot. MV gets picked on a lot by the refs (ie; Linden N.J), and it not fun. People hate MV Nation and its all because they work so hard.

  16. Jayden

    spacecadet54,

I did not want to bring up the referees. Sometimes they get a bad rap, and it is a thankless job. However, what happens when there is an especially badly called game? Do we just say nothing? There were Poughkeepsie fans in the section I was sitting in. In the beginning of the fourth quarter, one of them said ” this ia a 40 point game, being held to a 20 point game by the refs. This is how games get out of control and end up in fights” This statement came after 3 quarters of Mt Vernon fans popping blood vessels in their heads all around him, but at the very least, he was trying to be honest.

If games like this are ignored, then one day, a close game is bound to have a bad ending, and a player can get hurt.

As I said. all praise to Poughkeepsie. They have a great team, and great organization, that is why they are competitive every year. It is unfortunate that their team was not at full strengh today.

  17. TOMASO

Just to continue the Kevin Jones praise, I saw the Scarsdale game but could not make todays. I was most impressed with Kevin’s attitude, he refused to get frustrated and force things agains Scarsdale, despite the type of D being played, he let the game come to him, well done.

I also sat near Kevin’s father, you should be very proud! I’m sure Kevin will have a great future at West Virginia.

  18. bballer

I was at the game and I must say that Mt. Vernon is so quick. They have 20 sets of hands. I would also like to state a big congrats to the Pok team and coaches. I sat down near the Pok section and I was disgusted with the fans there. They were cursing at the players and coaches. I can’t believe the lack of class that some of these people had. Your team just made it to the Class AA finals against a national power. I will say the people acting stupid were in the low numbers. The one guy in the flashy suit was a jerk. Those players hit the wall but they won you a lot of games. Congrats to Coach Laughin. You showed a lot of class not responding to the idiots. I also think a few of them were drunk. Oh well, every community has their negative elements. Good luck in the future and I look forward to seeing this team play next year. Hopefully against some Westchester teams so I can see you more often. The Knights are going all the way. Wow they are good.

    Jayden

Thankless job for some of us fans having to sit and watch a Ref make an attempt to dictate the outcome. There are plenty of referee’s who are just plain good, and a lot of those good guys I believe played the game. They are in charged, and know the game. They don’t run up and down the court with the theatrical “arms waving in the air, skipping down the court hand smacking the back of the head offensive foul call” just to be noticed. That Ref came down from upstate and did his best to see that there was no blow out, I think it was pretty obvious. It appears like seniority, and not effectiveness is what counts at the end of the season. Not really sure how it work and who gets assign the refs, but man that was horrible. Either way the better team won, and yes POK made a valliant effort with what they had. See you around.

  20. CARTER

DOES ANYBODY KNOW WHY WEB AND DICKENS DID NOT PLAY TODAY FOR PK

  21. bballer

Webb broke his wrist in the White Plains game and Dickens had a bad high ankle sprain in the New Ro semi-final game.

  22. statesman

    Mount Vernon Fans,
Great game, for like the 10th straight time you guys sent us home for a long bus ride. You guys are a class program and do things the right way. Congrats and take home another state chip… Hopefully we’ll cross paths again and give you a game for once. Good luck and health the rest of the way!!!
