Class A boys final: No. 1 Peekskill vs. No. 2 Port Chester

9:31 p.m. – We’re down to the final 10 people in the building. Another great Championship Week is in the books. And what a Championship Sunday.
More titles for Mount Vernon and Peekskill boys. An epic performance by Angelei Aguirre propelling a stunning upset by White Plains and more heartbreak for the Mount Vernon girls. And how about Pearl River getting over the hump? Great stuff.
Thanks for all the comments. I hope those reading out there found our blogs helpful throughout the week. And in response to one, yes, Phil M. got in the game. His name is actually Phil Mazuka I’ve been told. I’m sure he’ll remember his few minutes of playing at The County Center even if it was in a bad loss. I wish I could have had that experience, even just for a few seconds (tear) …
Okay, well time to pack up and head home. It’s been great being allowed access to a perennial powerhouse blog like this one. I’ll now turn it back over to Mr. Varsity Insider himself. Goodnight and take care!9:22 p.m. – The County Center has completely emptied out except for the journalists still typing feverishly away on press row. Before I go, here are some final stats from Peekskill’s incredible win:
Mookie Jones: 19 points, six rebounds, four assists, four blocks and three steals
Elliot Watson: 16 points, 12 rebounds, five blocks
Daquan Brickhouse: 14 points, five rebounds, four assists
Ralph Watts: 13 points; Darien Thomas: 12 points; Karl Baker: 10 points.
Peekskill remains undefeated and good luck to any other Class A team left in the state.
Jordan Henriquez and Shakeem King each had 10 points to lead Port Chester.
9:03 p.m. – Daquan Brickhouse was just named the MVP of the tournament. What a season for the sophomore, who also won the MVP at the Slam Dunk Tournament.
Here’s the rest of the All-tournament team:
Ralph Watts (Peekskill), Lou Larizza (Port Chester), Jordan Henriquez (Port Chester), Eddie McGuinness (Pearl River), Michael Pagan (Panas).
Somehow, Mookie Jones was left off the team, despite a terrific all-around performance in the championship game. I guess he’s won a few other awards over his magnificent career though, so I wouldn’t feel too badly for him.
8:57 p.m. - Peekskill was just awarded the gold ball. It’s the fourth straight Section 1 title for the program. A fourth straight state title might not be far

hey who is reffing the game?
wow great to see Peekskill not get caught up in their hype and continue to bring it to their opponents no matter who it is.
I am not saying it’s over… but, once again it looks like “The Skillz” are peaking at just the right time…again. I’ve seen some people, mainly at the syracuse.com forum take a few shots at Coach P for blowing up the competition the last couple of games. Jealous!
Is Panzanaro retiring this year or coming back next year for his 500th win?
I don’t think he even knows yet.
I don’t think he even knows for sure.
oops… sorry. I hate it when that happens.
I feel that Coach P should not retire yet.
He should see that Daquan Brickhouse ends his high school carreer on a positive note.
Coach P saw Elton Brand, Hilton Armstrong, and now Mookie Jones into college. Daquan Brickhouse deserves the same attention and respect!
Where are those PC fans now who predicted a win?
wow portchester sucks
Dana,
Make sure you stop by for a cold one in Glens Falls. I’ll be there with a few of the other old timers.
PJ
so did Phil M. get in?
I don’t think anybody expected a beat down like this… like I said earlier… Peekskill is peaking at the right time AGAIN.
This is sportsmanship? A score such as this? Small class.
This is sportsmanship? A score such as this? Small class. You’d expect more from high school sports.
It ain’t T-Ball Denis S.
WOW! Peekskill will NOT lose this year. They are way too good. I didn’t realize how good Watts and Watson are. I thought they were good but not great. Throw them in with Mookie and Brickhouse and you have a hell of a team. WOW what a beatdown
this peekskill team is one of the most dominant ever in the section.
how did mookie not make all tournament?
The old adage rings true, again: Don’t write checks with your mouth that your butt can’t cash. As for complaining about “sportsmanship”, if you don’t want to lose this bad, TWO WORDS: PLAY BETTER. This isn’t tee ball and face it, life isn’t fair…just like the score.
Thank you to Mookie and Peekskill.
As a Port Chester resident I want to thank Mookie and his teamates from the past three years for showing the world you can’t buy or recruit a championship.
Port Chester tried and most of us residents are ashamed of the bball program. Hopefully its all over now! good ridance to that group!
I was at the game and there was no way Peekskill could have stopped scoring. They tried everything but port chester was that bad.
If they wanted to they could have scored 140! and pc had its starters in until 2 minutes left.
It is sad that a coach who I once respected would run up the score.Terrible job by Peekskill, what lessons are we sending to our youth? Many are aware how the officals in Section One have extreme dislike for Port Chester and it’s fans, so I guess the officals got to the peekskill coaches and advised them to bury up the score to make PC look bad. Why else would Peekskill leave in Mookie?Another terrible job by Section One.
Here’s the lesson you are going to send out to your youth: “Don’t wake up the monster.” I had enough of reading about how PC was going to give it to Peekskill. It was obvious to anyone with a basketball IQ that once this rematch took place on a real court and not some 400 year old equivalent of a church gymnasium, this game would be a BLOWOUT.
You need another lesson for the youth? Show some heart. The reason why the game got so lopsided is because PC quit. It became a 50 point game because they allowed it, period.
You can’t press the “reset” button or press “pause.” You want to complain? Complain about PC’s performance.
Athletes should deliver their best performance and try to break scoring records in every game they play.I don’t call pulling punches “sportsmanship”...you go out there to play your best, not play just well enough to win!
djr
you have no idea what your talking about. Mookie played less than a minute in the fourth. more of a symbolic gesture by the coach to allow him to be removed and get an ovation. You should shut up when if you just gonna make crap up. What a jerk!!!!!!!
Sorry, but we don’t need Peekskill to make PC look bad, they handle that by themselves. Even with the recruiting scandals PC has been too undiciplined to compete with Peek. They can go out and get themselves an 8 foot center and it won’t matter because they will implode as they always do.
NYC Hoops 27,
you hit the nail on the head with the “no heart” assessment. If something is not handed to PC they will give up. Unfortunately, this becomes a metaphor for life.
Congrats to D Brickhouse on winning MVP. This kid plays bigger than his listed height and is a blur. He’s only a sophomore and could play at any HS in New York City. He’s the real deal. If he can grow to 6 “1”, they’ll be announcing his name at the NBA Draft. I’ve seen all the big time NY/NJ/CT point guards who made it to the L: Kenny Anderson, Bobby Hurley, Omar Cook, Kenny Satterfield, Stephon Marbury, etc. He’s in that class.
i dont get the fuss about pc’s center. he’s awful. he has no work ethic and was staring down peekskill players while blocking a shot down 30 points. maybe theres a coach somewhere out there that can make something of it, but perosnally, i dont think he cares enough or wants to learn enough to ever be that good. not to mention i dont even think he could be titled as “raw”
nyc hoops is right on. PC was scared to death, choked liked dogs and then quit. the big kid better take up another sport basketball is not for him. no one on that team can shoot. i watched at least 20 games this year and that was by far the worst performance of the year. I bet that is the worst loss in the history of section 1 finals. Could someone confirm that?
Curious,
That’s a coaching issue. Seriously, what coach is going to allow his player to talk trash or act menacing down 30? Let’s see, you’re 6 11, scored 10 points, your team lost by 50 and you’re acting hard?
There is a reason a kid like this ends up in the MAAC and not on Tobacco road. That reason lies in the mirror.
This message is for 2 cents whom so fevereshly talked trash about Peekskill and how they were going to smack Peekskill. I have four words for you WHO WON THE GAME???? WHo Got smacked? WOW what an impressive performance by Peekskill. They completely shut down Larizza who is suppossed to be going to Louisville. I don’t think that he could play at Oac eto be honest with, but i guess if you have the cash you cna forward your career. Thakns 2 cents for your insight into this game. I also love how your tone changed on here after your team got smacked back and forth the whole entire game. Maybe if Coach Vincent coached the game instead of the little loser coach maybe they would have been closer. But as e have been saying the last for years to PC BETTER LUCK NEXT YEA!!!!
There are two images that I will take from this game. One is Jordan Henriquez’s mother standing behind the Port Chester Basket in Warmups with a sign that said “23-1”, of course inferring that Peekskill would lose. And number two is Jordan’s mom arguing with everyone at the scorer’s table after the game (Section One Officials). What could you possibly be arguing about? Your son, the supposed 7 foot star got his butt handed to him, lost by 50, and still made the All Tournament team. I can think of 10 kids in next week’s recreation tournament who will have better careers than him.
As for the dude that said PC would win by 15 and Larizza would score 30, I got two words…..GOD DAMN!!!
These are high school basketball players playing for the love of the sport. I was at that game and saw the demolition. It’s not that Port Chester was that bad, I thought they came out strong, it’s just that Peekskill is that good. They brought their A+ game and were not going to be denied by anyone. They played as well as a team could play and the game got way out of hand. Let’s stop bad-mouthing high school players and cut out saying they ‘choked like dogs’ or this player can’t play at this college. No one choked, the team that is by far the best Class A team in the state showed it’s superiority again. To those who are criticizing these kids, show some class. They’re not professional athletes making millions of dollars. No one quit tonight, one team may have just been demoralized after a while and you can’t help blame them for that!
Slap,
That kid may be going to Louisville but it’s not to play basketball. They have three kids signed for next year and two more that have committed. He’s not one of them.
djr…That’s a new one and a first. The referees didn’t like PC so they told Peekskill to run up the score. I guess there were a lot of bad calls on PC too. So, if you lose find someway to blame it on the refs. “Get a life”
In response to Port Chester guy who said most Port Chester residents are ashamed of the b-ball progam: You’re probably one of those people who complained to the school board for years when they Rams won three games a year from 1986-1995. They have made it to the County Center since 2004 that’s nothing to be ashamed of and I like the thousands of PC supporters at the County Center were not ashamed of them last night even if they did lose by 53 points. Get over the recruiting issue, they have had plenty of good players from PC the last five years and you know almost every team recruits. I didn’t hear too many people saying ‘what a disgrace the Rams made it to the County Center again this year’. These kids work hard. If you want to change the program perhaps you can volunteer your time instead of criticizing the kids.
After seeing this score and watching both teams this year I have a couple of opinions. One I don’t know if people understand teh importance of being well coached. The PC team is as good example as they come. Not only this year but in past years as well. The PC team on paper can play with Peekskill any day. If they played at the Boy’s and girls club the game may be much closer. Th fact is the PC team is not coached and is the most undisciplined program maybe in section one, year in and year out. How does this impact the sectional final you ask? First, I’m sure practice this past week was alittle different at the Peek gym than it was at the PC gym. Preperation is priceless. Second, when your down the wheels can come off the bus or you can keep them on. A team like PC who does not practice under pressure situations does not know how to react in these times and it is easier to give up than respond. Third, after you throw in the towel a discipline team actis with class. PC covers their face and hides int eh corner without excepting responsibility. Bottom line, if PC prepared themselves for pressure filled situations and practiced them day in and day out, we would have never seen what we did tonight. Am I saying they wouldn’t have lost? NO but disciplined athletes would have learned something and improved themselves and their program for next year
LOU LARIZZA?
Slap
You got the wrong guy. I never said anything about PC before tonight. I have only seen them play 2 times this year.
to Father yankeefan
I call you father because you must be a priest. “no one quit they just got demoralized”? B.S. THEY QUIT
They got what they had coming is what happened. PC talks trash all the time. bout the big kid playin at Memphis next year and the little kid playing at Louisville. yea ok. we’ll see. They better hope they don’t play Cuse.
Yankees fan: these athletes are being paid in PC. They are expected to play better for the money they are getting. What a disgrace that program has become. I hope all of their programs aren’t run the same way!
They gettin paid there for real?
Yankee fan
Come out of the closet and put your name on the blog if your proud that PC recruits and that its ok because we make it to the county center.
I played for PC when we were really PC and we played at the county cennter with OUR team. we had port chester kids and port chester coaches.
and what good players came from PC? mohamed Low or Avilia? oh yea. they were recruited to.
That kid is not going to Memphis. Where do people come up with this? He’s 6 11 and he’s not a top 150 recruit. Coach Cal recruits guys that can actually play ball and he’s not one of them. Man, I really laugh when I hear stuff like this. Just look at his recruiting list. He has ZERO schools on there.
Nice job by Peekskill. They wanted it more and it showed BIG TIME!! That PC Center is terrible but because of his size he’ll likely get a D-1 scholarship, while the PG got talent and more than likely is only a D-2/D-3 prospect. Unless he pays his own way to L’Ville, becomes a bench/role player/scout team guy, and stays on staff after he’s graduated. Massiello did it with Pitino at Kentucky and who says this kid can’t do the same now. And there’s a little PC-L’Ville connection..Head Baseball coach @ L’Ville is from PC.
PHS81,
I will be on a flight from Kuwait, next Wednsday!
I will be looking for you, and my cold one!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Question to all TRUE Peekskill High School Fans:
Is this the best Peekskill High School Basketball team ever?
It’s beyond me why Mookie isn’t the MVP. Yes Brickhouse has been great, but let’s be realistic here. Mookie is the heart and soul and leader of the team. He had a dominating performance tonight. I don’t get it.
Just a last few thoughts.
Anybody who has anything negative to say about Coach P, clearly has never met him and doesn’t know what they are talking about. Don’t like the lopsided scores in the playoffs? Go back about 365 days to the Lakeland game. Up 16 and you know the rest. If you relax on a playoff caliber team you can run into problems.
As far as the best Peekskill team ever… You can’t say that until there are two more awards in the, already crowded, trophy case in the hallway outside the gym. (Gut feeling – Three weeks from now w can call em’ the best.)
I’m happy that Peekskill took Port Chester outta this game early!! Shout outs to Ralph Watts congrats man happy 2 see you get that section 1 title.. 23-1?? LOL Sorry Mrs. Henriquez!!!
Now that Larizza is graduating, will PC see the same # and quality of “move in” talent that has appeared since 2004?
I see the program returning back to the pack in Class A.
A BIG CONGRATS TO THE PEEKSKILL RED DEVILS ON BRINGING HOME ANOTHER TITLE!! It was a spectacular performance by a GREAT team. They played the game at their pace and took PC outta the game from the tipoff. Mookie, Daquan, and the rest of the guys had a REALLY good night.
To Mrs. Henriquez, holding that “23-1” did nothing, but give The Peekskill boys ANOTHER reason why they should REALLY wipe the floor w/ ur Rams. 96-43!?? How could you even call that a game?? That was more like a typical Peekskill Practice with another teams nd a couple of hundred outsiders watching. All you PortChester Fans got excited and jumped outta your seats when Henriquez Slammed it in during the 3rd/4th Qtr, but did ANY of you take the time to look at the score at the time??...You’s were down by 40 points ;^)
...And I have to DEFINATELY agree with PHS81 on this….We CAN’T call this set of players the best team in the school’s HISTORY until they’ve won that final chip at the end of the month. SURE they’ve got Mookie Jones, Elliot Watson, Ralph Watts, and Daquan Brickhouse….BUT lets NOT 4get about guys from the past such as Bill “Buc” Brickhouse, Todd Scott, and Elton Brand.
Congratulations to Peekskill on a great season and a tremendous game. You played like champions and deserved this win. Good luck in regionals, states and federation. Mookie really demonstrated the meaning of being a true leader this year.
Is it just me or is anybody curious as to why Howie Green was allowed to ref another Peekskill Championship game after last year’s controversial game against Lakeland? He has become one of the worst ref’s in the state. Then he went out and was arguing with a fan in the balcony right over the scorer’s table and had security go up to the guy and threaten to throw him out. He is riduculous. Everyone, no matter which team you are there to see, yells at the refs, it’s part of the game. A ref needs to be professional and not take on fans or players. Howie needs to be disciplined again this year for his actions, but of course this will not happen since he is the head official for the Section.
Kevin,
Nice speaking to you on the baseline after last night’s game. In no way was I giving you a hard time about your 15 point predicition. You continue to do an excellent job for all kids in the lohud area. Thanks for your great insite.
Peekfatdaddy,
Who is Howie Green? And, how can a ref screw up a fifty point game? I hear he is Coach P’s # 1 ref.
Howie Green is the little bald ref who has a hot temper. I’m not trying to say that he would screw up the game. If you read my comments and you have seen any basketball in the last two years, you will know that he was one of the officials along with Chick Mazzuca (who called an OK game in the AA Championship) that officiated the controversial Peekskill-Lakeland Final last year. How could he be officiating the same team again this year and then make an ass out of himself by trying to have a guy that is 30 feet from the court thrown out. He is not Coach P’s #1 ref. Watch some Peekskill basketball before you comment. Everyone besides you on this forum knows about what happened last year. And besides who in the world knew it would be a 50 point game.
Fatdaddy,
Thanks for attempting to clear that up. But both guys were bald refs. And, I am well aware of last years controversy, frankly, I was surprised to see Mr. Green on the game myself. As for watching Peekskill play, I’ve seen them many times, going back to the days of John Moro. Thank you, very much. Good luck!
To All Bloggers,
As an alumnus of peekskill high school and current coach I have shyed away from the blog this season as not so much in reading but in defending the peekskill program and it players….I was really hard to read commments last season and this season and hold back from responding….I am sure many coaches and loyal fans read this blog on a daily basis to catch interesting stories from kev or to check out local fan gossip…Whichever floats your boat so be it….Honestly over the last 2 weeks I have seen loyal bloggers of this site bash a program I am loyal to and a very good friend and former player of whom still holds it together in Coach P….All this talk of recruiting players and running up scores is absurd….You have to be an extreme idiot to not understand the game of basketball to think being outscored by 50 or so points is running up the score….Running up the score is keeping your starters in until the final minutes of the game….Running up the score is pressing full court when the leading team still has their full court pressure on when the other has their 2nd or 3rd 5 in the game….I mean honestly get a grip….PROGRAMS not seasonal basketball teams teach these kids to play 110% regardless of what the score is….offense is to be run to execution…Defense is to be played at maximum effort…If those task at hand can’t be completed or coached then what is the purpose of the game….the bottom 7 or 8 of a roster may ever see the floor let alone the Westchester County Center with a crowd they may never see in their lives and they are supposed to give up….being up 30-50 points and holding the ball until the shot clock runs down and hoisting a shot at the hoop is more of a slap in the face than scoring when given the opportunity….the opposing team needs to have the discipline within its bench to enter the game and EXECUTE as best they can what they were taught the past 5 months or so instead of TRYING TO GET THIERS….Coach P is the last man on this planet to run a score up, but he is the 1st to ridicule and punish a kid for not giving maximum effort regardless of what point the game is at…And i’m sure that coach for many of section 1’s head coaches, Cimmino, Mayfield, etc.
In response to Port Chester guy: If I’m not mistaken Leon Hill, who graduated in 2004 was a true blue Port Chester player and is playing at Niagara right now and doing quite well. He helped lead the Rams to the finals in 2004 where they lost by two to Fox Lane. That team also had the Charney kid who hit seven 3’s against Greeley in the semis, Ron Miles, Melvin Calhoun, all PC players to name a few and that’s without even thinking. So there have been plenty of so called ‘non-recruits.’ Glad you had the chance to play for coach Tewey while at PC, he was a good guy. At least you had great seasons, our team was the beginning of the down period.
