Class B semifinal: Irvington vs. North Salem

February
26

10:19 p.m. – Here are some final stats from an incredible game:

For North Salem, Karl Miras had 17 points. Marc Miller and Josh O’Neil had 14 points, and Tom Kruz, aka Top Gun, added 14 rebounds.

For Irvington, Brittain Purcelle had 27 points and Nick Nedwick had 17 points.

Thanks for all the comments and remember to stay tuned to the blogs all week for score updates. Time to see what’s going on with the rest of Team Journal News. I didn’t comply with the sweater-over-dress shirt-look worn by both Kevin and Josh though, so I don’t know if I’ll be invited to hang out. Until next time, goodnight!

10:11 p.m. - Irvington is finally trudging off the court, after what was a heartbreaking loss. The Bulldogs led most of the way, but couldn’t keep up their hot shooting in the fourth quarter.

10:09 p.m. – Top-seeded North Salem has survived with a 66-58 win. The Tigers will play the winner of the other Class B semifinal, the matchup between Albertus Magnus and Briarcliff, the defending champion, for the title, Saturday night.

10:06 p.m. – After four North Salem now leads 66 to 58 with 28.6 seconds left. As one can imagine, the Irvington crowd is still pretty unhappy over the fifth foul on Nick Nedwick with 42 seconds left that negated a layup that would have cut the North Salem lead to two.

10:05 p.m. – Nick Nedwick just appeared to steal an inbounds pass and convert a layup, but instead, was whistled for a foul – his fifth. Now the Tigers will head to the line for two free throws instead of being up just two points. Clearly, this is the biggest play of the game to this point.

10:03 p.m. – Nick Nedwick just took it all the way, pulled up, and drained a twisting 3-pointer to pull Irvington to within four at 62-58. North Salem will be inbounding with 43.4 seconds left. They will shoot two free throws the rest of the way.

10:01 p.m. – Bad time for our blogs to stop working. North Salem is now ahead 62-55 with just under one minute to play.

9:56 p.m. – A Tom Kruze putback has just given North Salem a 60-55 lead with 1:51 to play. Moments before, Nick Nedwick connected on a 3-pointer from the right side, but four straight points by the Tigers have put them back in front.

9:52 p.m. – Marc Miller just converted 1-of-2 from the line, but got the offensive rebound to maintain possession. North Salem leads 56-52 with 3:53 to play.

9:49 p.m. – This has truly become a back-and-forth affair. Every time I go to type something, something else happens. The latest is a Marc Miller bucket down low to give North Salem a 55-52 lead with 5:12 to play. Moments earlier though, Purcelle made an unbelievable crossover, step-back move and drained a long jumper. I’ll keep you posted!

9:47 p.m. – Brittain Purcelle just hit a runner in the lane to put Irvington back in front 50-48. There’s 6:30 left in the game and the Irvington senior has 25 points.

9:42 p.m. – We’re through three quarters and the score is tied at 46. This is truly shaping up to be a great game. The top seed in Class C, Blind Brook, went down yesterday. Can North Salem avoid a similar fate?

9:40 p.m. – Marc Miller is going to the line for two shots. There’s 14.6 seconds left in the third quarter and Irvington is ahead 46-44.

9:35 p.m. - A 3-point play by Marc Miller followed by a 3-pointer by Greg Shea has given North Salem its first lead of the game with ju

  10. irv

How many pts does nedwick and purcelle have?

  11. mike SEC 1

For anyone who thinks Albertus has a chance at beating briarcliff they are 100% wrong. Not knocking the hard work of all the players on the falcons but briarcliff is just so strong with lombardi kyle and alex makein them the 3 best players in class B..good luck to both teams i would be shocked if albertus upsets them

  12. jake

hahaha beechum one of the top 3 players? you have got to be kidding me he is one of the most overrated players in the sections. alex is real streaky and joey i will agree is one of the best players. and your forgetting about both Jones, Kilpatrick and many other great players, including Marc Miller on North Salem. Yes, Briarcliff will beat Magnus but North Salem will upset Briarcliff in the finals.

  13. ...

Briarcliff is 2 north salem is 1 but briarcliff will still win and he said class B those two players you named are not class B idiot

  14. jake

I just re-read what the guy said and I just relized he was talking about class B only. But Still every other comment still goes and Marc Miller could destroy any of them and Josh O’neil will outscore GUlatta when they play

  15. mike SEC 1

I was speaking of class B in my eyes mark miller is a good player but is soft and would not put him on top of class B with nedwick prucell lombardi kyle alex and prucell are the two best point guards in class B and as far as northsalem upsetting briarcliff its not going to happen northsalem plays in the league of dover pawling no wonder there on a 20 game win streak but with the power of briarcliff no team in class B from section 1 will defeate them when it counts

  16. PG

    Alex,

You did a great job keeping the blogs updated with the game. Thanks!

  17. big jc

Gullota is by far a better player then o’ neil get outta here man

  18. mike SEC 1

o’neil is a weak player averages 18.3 points in a terrible leauge get out of here with this garbage alex will eat him alive

  19. Js in North Salem

Good Game – Thanks for the updates despite the technical problems you encountered. Rest of the family was at the game and said it was a heartstopper. Irvington was tremendous and it sounds like Purcelle made a case for the all tournament team.

Good luck to both teams in tomorrow other semi-final.

  20. falcon alum

Good job by Irvington hanging in there. Hafta give credit where credit is due. I guess they’ll just go back to being horrible again though.

  21. neutral ball

My prediction: Bears: 71 Magnus: 58
    then…Bears: 65 North Salem: 60

  22. Bigblueallday

I was at the game todoay and it was quite the thriller. Both teams played top ball. Britt played one of the most dominant games ive ever seen anyone play. He had a strong 2 points but it almost seemed like henever missed. Nedwick was great too. They didnt get him the ball enough in the 3rd qtr. On the North Salem side they play some of the smartest ball in the section. Talen wise they are not the best but bball IQ they are. They have a great coach who smarlty kept Marky Mark out for a lot of the first half because of 2 fouls. He came back and it opened a lot of shots and he came up clutch in the 4th. All around great game and the finals should be great.

  23. Albertus Falcons

    neutral ball,

its clear that you are a Briarcliff fan bc u called them the Bears while not naming the mascots of NS and Magnus

  24. county center

This was an out of your seat game. North Salem Irvington back to back baskets it was a very good game. Purcelle couldnt miss and was playing his best game. Nedwick was also very good too, he was not missing either but then like bigblueallday said they didnt give nedwick the ball in the 3rd quarter like they should. The irvington players were just shooting the ball everytime they touched it they should of been a little smarter and gave it up. To the two best gaurds in B. I wish Purcelle and Nedwick the best of luck. Also by the way the refs sucked they blew that game!!!!

  25. tigers

“ya but no one cares b/c NS is going to beat irvington 67-58” .... i owned all of you …

  26. tigers

“ya but no one cares b/c NS is going to beat irvington 67-58”... i told you guys

  27. tigers

    my bad

  28. rockland

Nedwick and Purcell had a great run in Irvington , they will be missed. Irvington will have to rebuild in a big way for next season. Good luck to them and Good luck to North Salem.

  29. Arthur

wow, this was a great game. Things looked bad for N Salem when Miller picked up his second foul and the score was something like 18-5 (?)

N Salem played very smart, sound basketball. they attacked the basket, not just desperately jacking up 3s. they showed great fundamentals—shooters regularly followed their shots in and got offensive rebounds. they got Irvington’s big men in trouble (like 11 fouls between 3 Irvington centers meant those centers were on their heels when Miller came back.

N Salem trailed 20-9 at the end of one quarter, but they tied it up at the start of the fourth quarter.

I also saw the second half of Woodlands- Briarcliff. In both games, TEAM basketball overcame individual star performances.

  30. rockland

The Irvington coach made no adjustments to the box and 1 in the 2nd quarter which allowed the NS team to get back in the game with there big player on the bench that was the key to the game. Irvington could not get a big rebound when they needed to and there bigs could not finish. It was a great game and worth the price of admission.Good job by both teams

  31. Paul C

I was at the game and have no alliance to either team. There were a couple keys to the game. 1. You have to give North Salem credit they could easily have let this thing get away from them when they were down 18-5 towards the end of the 1st Qtr and Miller on the bench with 2 fouls. They actually had cut the lead to 3 at right before half and the ball with 50 seconds but Purcelle stole it scored and got fouled for a 3 pt play. Then Purcelled scored again to push the lead to 8 at the half. But still all in all a positive for NS for the fact that they were able to shave 5 pts off the lead with Miller on the bench and stayed within striking distance. 2. You can’t really put blame on the Irivington coach but instead give an INCREDIBLE AMOUNT of CREDIT to Karl Miras #20 who played sick Defense against Nedwick in the 2nd half. Not sure of the status but I would love to see what Nedwick got in the 3rd and 4th qtr. I wanted to say he had 4 maybe 6 pts. The 3rd and unfortunately for the kids of Irvington the biggest play of the game is the Ref (In bad position!) not being able to swallowed his whistle. Nedwick steals the ball inside the foul line and the ref who is not the ref on the baseline but the Ref at halfcourt calls the foul.
Just and absolute terrible call. To be fair to the kids of Irvington they should call both teams back tomorrow put 55 seconds on the clock and NS has the ball with a 2 pt lead. One last thing I will say I have seen that ref up at a NS game and he did seem to either be extremely friendly or just know everyone at NS. Would love to know where he resides?? NS maybe. The fouls in the second half were 12 to 4. Would love to say NS could beat Briacliff but I think they have no shot at all. Bears have too much talent!!

  32. Paul C

ONe other thing Miller was an animal on the boards in the 2nd half and converted a high percentage of his foul shots.

  33. Luv-in-larchmont

Great game, hard fought by the players on both sides. Paul c, you are 100% correct, the ref with the hair is the house ref at North Salem and a very close personal friend of the coach. He should have had enough ethical values to recuse himself from the assignment, but then again, why lose a good friend.

  34. ??

    Brittain Purcelle is a beast

  35. mike

pucelle was awesome. my opinion only best pure scorer in class b. triangle and 2 was a good move by the ns coach, but irvington’s role players had good looks against it but could not knock some down. great great game. nedwicks 5th foul was tough, they let the kids play all night and called that ticky tack foul. miller is tough on the boards and there players hit some shots, oneil i think is very overated. ns won and i give them credit, they did not get down after the start of the game. i wish them luck saturday and hope i get to watch another great high school basketball game like i did tonight.

  36. county center

Paul C your so wrong purcelle did not score and get an and 1. Purcelle hit a jump shot right over miller and then an clutch 3 pointer by nedwick who put salem up by 4 and then that ref who blew the game called the worst foul i ever seen on nedwick to give him his 5. YES THE REF IS FRIENDS WITH THE NORTH SALEM COACH!!!! Alos paul c that kid was playing good Deffense on Nedwick because Nedwicks teamates would not set picks for him or Purcelle i think that player on purcelle held him to only 7 8 points as well. Purcelle 27 Nedwick 17 and NS is going to get SMACKED by bcliff and albertus just sucks anyway. But North Salem is a very good team GOOD JOB GUYS!!!!

  37. steve

irvington fans stop blaming the ref already, you lost, blew a 14 points lead, just accept it, your team lost and your out, the ref sucked both ways so you can’t say anything at all, o’neil is much better then any player on irvington, he does have as many points but he drew 2 everytime he got the ball andthen finds the open man

  38. boxedout

Ref blew tha game. How can you not let the kids decide the game. Making a call like that at that point of the game is atrocious. Very lopsided calls during the entire game. The fact that they did not make one three second call the entire game when Miller was literally in there for 10 seconds at a clip was ridiculous.

  39. Irvington

Bulldogs should ahve won that game!!!!

  40. Irvington

BULLDOGS SHOULD OF WON THAT GAME REFS BLEW IT!!!!

  41. West Hoops

Amazing. Irvington blows a 14 pt lead, loses by 8 and everyone wants to blame the refs? How about the fact they have no else who can even shoot a jumper aside from Purcelle/Nedwick? Irvington was exposed as a team with little depth and only 2 scoring options.

  42. Paul C

County center- My below comments were referring the end of the first half not the end of the game. Read it again. I am right and never wrong.

They actually had cut the lead to 3 at right before half and the ball with 50 seconds but Purcelle stole it scored and got fouled for a 3 pt play. Then Purcelled scored again to push the lead to 8 at the half

Come on the kid was playing good defense. I don’t want to hear they weren’t setting picks for him. THey played a solid Triangle and two and try to force the other kids who normally don’t score to hit big shots and they couldn’t. A great job by the NS coach. But still that one foul called with 55 seconds left in the game changed everything. Brutal, brutal, brutal call for an out of a position Ref!!!

  43. West Hoops

    Paul C

I was standing on the baseline (same side as Irvington student section). Nedwick CLEARLY grabbed the guy’s arm when going for the steal. I don’t understand what the controversy is…start thinking with your head and not emmotions. It was a foul no question about it.

  44. mike

IRVINGTON BE PROUD OF YOUR TEAM, YOU HAD A SUCCESSFUL SEASON. SOME TOUGH CALLS MADE BY THE REFS BUT THAT WAS NOT THE REASON WE LOST, A SHOT HERE A REBOUND HERE AND WE COULD PULLED THE UPSET. BULLDOGS GREAT SEASON AND LETS ROOT FOR NORTH SALEM TO BEAT BRIARCLIFF. PURCELLE AND NEDWICK WERE A LETHAL COMBO AND I AM SURE ALL CLASS B COACHES WILL BE HAPPY TO NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THEM. MY CONGRATS TO NORTH SALEM FOR A HARD FOUGHT WIN, AND TO MY BELOVED BULLDOGS ON A GREAT SEASON. YOU GUYS SPARKED A RENEWED INTERSET IN BASKETBALL IN OUR TOWN, AND HOPEFULLY SOON WE CAN GET TO WHERE WE WERE THIS YEAR SOON. BRIT AND NICK CONGRATS ON YOUR CAREERS, BOTH 1000 PT SCORES. GOOD LUCK ON THE NEXT LEVEL.

  45. N. SALEM SUCKS

How you gonna have a ref that is best friends wit the north salem coach, and that same ref have a relative on the north salem team???? hmmmmm thats kinda funny when the ref is celebrating wit the team after the game.. your all just dumb nick and brittain will take anyteam by themselves like they been doing all year.. north salem is a joke, if they have a half decent ref they will loose. They were not calling fouls for brittain or nick all game when they were getting hacked all game but when nick nedwick cleanly steals the ball their gonna call a foul.. that game was a joke, that ref should just go jump off a bridge.

  46. West Hoops

    N. Salem Sucks:

I’m sure when you’re done crying/whining/complaining you’ll see the better team won.

I’ll give Irvington credit though, Purcelle was awesome.

  47. Common Sense

If memory serves me, only the best referees are selected to officiate the sectional games. The Journal News published an article within the last week detailing how the referees are ranked during the season, how each coach could list three referees they did not want to ref its games, and how each ref could list three teams whose games they did not want to officiate.

If one of the referees was such a close friend of the North Salem coach, don’t you think the other coaches during the season would have ranked him so low on their ratings that he wouldn’t make the grade to ref a sectional game? Further more, if this was known to other coaches, don’t you think the Irvington coach would have listed last night’s referee as one on the three he did not want? Clearly if the “knowledgable” Irvington fans had this inside information, they would have informed their coach.

  48. to west hoops

    Suck a fat one

  49. To common Sense

First you dont know who is going to ref your game. You are just a retard i cant even say anything to you haha your so dumb

  50. Get Outta Here

West Hoops…You posted all day about this game on 2 threads. Have a job much? It seems like you are hanging around to try and start some trouble or something. And if you are an adult you probably should check your priorities.

Great game by both sides. Tough loss for the Bulldogs, but they had a really great season and should go out with pride – especially the seniors. Tough D by North Salem. And I agree…they are a very disiplined team. Great defense.

  51. SUPERBOWL-GMEN-

way to go nick and britt !!! you both had amazing careers at ihs . we are going truly going to miss you next year . all the best in college . the sophmore class has some talent that will all be up next year !!they are a very compitive group of kids . good job bulldogs

  52. Common Sense

To the poster with no name. I didn’t say you knew who was calling your game. What I said was each coach could submit a list of three referees they did not want officiating their game. If this referee was supposedly so well known as a friend of NS that it made the info made its wat all the way down county, dont you think your coach would have listed him as one of the three?
You also didn’t respond to the point of how such a well known biased referee could have been highly rated enough to make it to sectional games. I guess when the facts are not on your side you just resort to old fashioned name calling.

  53. West Hoops

    Get Outta here,

Blow me. I’ve just been responding to ridiculous claims of preferential treatment from referee’s, conspiracy theories, etc…I gave Irvington their props. I thought Purcelle played a hell of a game. I just get fired up when I hear people putting the blame on the refs and not giving NS their proper due.

  54. Paul C

    West Hoops-

You might be the only guy in the building who thought that was a foul. NOT EVEN THE REF REALLY BELIEVES THAT WAS A FOUL! Can you at least tell me why the Ref on the baseline doesn’t make that call the one who was standing two feet from the play. It comes from the guy at Half court running inside the foul line to call a foul on the arm. Listen I was routing for NS and could give a crap about Irvington. I actually hope NS crushes Briacliff. I am from neither school and was just a fan watching a good game that was decided by a ref and not a player. You have to eat your whistle in that spot. NS would still have the ball and a two point lead so its not like Irvington was assured a win it would have just made for a great 50 seconds.

  55. Get Outta Here

    West Hoops –

    Classy
