Class A seeds

January
27

All I wanted to do when I got home from watching Mount Vernon in New Jersey was to go to sleep. But a promise is a promise.

I put on a little Jack Johnson, poured a bowl of Cheerios and began breaking down the schedules of all the teams in Class A. Thank you to Knights fan for pressing me on doing it. Not only is it a service to the public, it actually pointed out a few key results from December that I had forgotten about. It definitely keeps me sharp.

Anyway, it’s 1:15 in the morning, so I just want to get to sleep. I’m driving up to UMass tomorrow to write a story on Chris Lowe, the Mount Vernon product in his third season as the school’s starting point guard. Lowe is awesome, in case you haven’t been following him.

Here are the rankings through tonight’s games:

1. Peekskill (15-2, 4.40)
2. Pearl River (13-2, 3.53)
3. Lakeland (10-4, 3.21)
4. Lourdes (9-3, 3.10)
5. Port Chester (10-5, 3.08)
6. Tappan Zee (10-5, 3.00)
7. Eastchester (12-4, 2.93)
8. Kennedy (8-6, 2.77)
9. Byram Hills (8-6, 2.50)
10t. Brewster (8-7, 2.47)
10t. Panas (9-6, 2.47)
12. Ardsley (8-6, 2.29)
13. *Rye (7-6, 2.15)
14. Spring Valley (8-7, 2.10)
15. Pelham (8-7, 2.00)
16. *Hen Hud (6-7, 1.85)
17. *Nyack (7-10, 1.57)
18. Yonkers (8-8, 1.54)
19. *Sleepy Hollow (6-10, 1.50)
20. *Beacon (4-11, 0.83)

  • – Denotes teams that have not yet qualified for the playoffs

    Two quick notes:
    — The possibility of seeing this on the brackets: No. 16 Spring Valley at No. 1 Peekskill is pretty good. Imagine that for a first-round game?
    — The teams in League III-B are at a clear disadvantage. It’s a huge league, so there are less opportunities for non-league games vs. AA to potentially boost their seeds. Eastchester could win 15 games and be behind Lakeland or Lourdes. That’s tough.

You don’t have to mention me. You would still do this even if I didn’t open my big mouth. Or at least I hope so, lol.

I think class A is the most intriguing as far as seeding, because it’s so wide open beyond Peekskill and PC and a lot of things can change from now till the end of the season.

It’s better to slide down to 10 so you could avoid Peek 2nd round as an 8 or 9. But teams can’t keep that in mind when they play. Which Top 8 seed gets stuck with SV is also a key.
A lot of teams will qualify for playoffs. Only 13 did last year I believe.

I don’t think league III-B is at a disadvantage because they get to play in an easier league than II-N/C/S to get some easy Ws which makes up for lack of AA wins.

And where did Lourdes come from? Are they good?

  2. falcon alum

Yea does anyone have any info on Lourdes? I havent heard anything about them this year. Are they legit or do they load up on crappy teams to beat so they can make the sections?

  3. fan

What do u think of lakeland r they for real or what? Which 4 teams will make it to the county center ?

  4. Secninecomment

I’m new to the boys basketball scene, so I’m not really sure who the “crappy teams” are so this is who Lourdes has played. Wins- Fox Lane, Ossining(2 wins),Beacon(2 wins),Harrison, Hen Hud, Ketchum, Dover, and Webatuk(MHAL), losses are to Peekskill of course, by about 30, Poughkeepsie by 8 or 9, but were up by 15 at the half, and Panas by 4 in OT. Their leg. is Pskill, Pokeep, Panas, Hun Hud, Ossining, Beacon. They still have to play Panas, Pskil, and Pokeep again. Lourdes has some serious height this year, and they can handle the ball. Also, they haven’t really played with the full team all year. Jr. Fazio, was benched a lot at the beginning of the season, due to missing practices and lateness, and now Sr. guard Zenz, has been out sick, and won’t be able to play for a few more games. Good game to watch tues. is against PoKeep.

How does the seeding work, if for example, 19 teams make sectionals? Top 3 get buys?

  6. sports fan

How many teams from each class make it to the playoffs?

  7. Jeff P.

To add to Secninecomment’s post, Roy C. Ketcham and Ossining are both Class AA teams. This gives Lourdes three victories against Class AA competition, although the teams it beat have struggled this year…

  8. con10der

    Kev,
Whats the criteria for the pts system…whats worth how many points etc.?

  9. blah blah

Been hearing a lot of good things about Chris Lowe this year and am looking forward to the article.

I have to disagree that league 3b is at a disadvantage because the leagues are so unfair. You have teams in A that play a B league schedule and get to play in the A section. Going 20 and 0 in those leagues aren’t as good as going 10 and 10 in others. So it is not fair because last time i checked playing peekskill, portchester, panas, nyack, poughepsie, spring valley is a little more difficult as an A team then playing hastings, irvington, etc.

    fan,
Lakeland is a team that always comes to play in late-Feb. I didn’t think it had a chance to get to the County Center at this time last year and they probably should have beaten Peekskill for the title. That’s a discussion for another day.

    bball4,
It’s complicated. But here it goes: For every Section 1 win against a team in your class or lower class, you get 4 points. For every win against a larger class school, you get an additional point (so if a Class C team beats an A, it gets 6 points; if a Class A beats a C, it’s only worth 4). Then you total the points up and divide it by the number of Section 1 games played. That comes out to a POINT INDEX. The highest to lowest is how the seeds go.

    sports fan,
The number of teams depends on how many teams qualify (40 percent win of total games; 50 percent wins of games vs. your class). So Class A could have 5 teams in its bracket or 20. It’s all about how many qualify.

If there are 20 teams in the bracket, there will be outbracket games (in this case, No. 16 vs. 17; No. 15 vs. 18, No. 14 vs. 19, No. 13 vs. 20). The wins go into the first round of the tournament. The 16-17 winner would face No. 1, etc.

  12. Luv of the Game

    Fan,

Lakeland is doing much better than expected considering they have only one returning starter this season. Lou DeMello does a fantastic job controlling the offense and dishing the ball to his teammates. The team has ten good athletes and alot of speed with two other guards that can dribble and shoot—Keith Rodriquez and Lavor Morris (transfer from Stepinac). They are inconsistent with their inside presence, but are getting better as the season progresses. I’m sure they would love to have the opportunity to play Peekskill again…just for the fun of it leaving the poor officiating off the court.

  13. wow

Lourdes has ZERO wins against teams with winning records. Boy will they luck out with their seeding.

  14. U should coach

Spring Valley may actually be a .500 team in the standings and on the court. They are not like the past SV teams under Worsley. The backcourt play is good and the Mckinley kid plays well but they are not deep. I believe an early exit is in store this year

  15. jfk

wait hold on how is kennedy lower then lakeland when we already beat lakeland and we are in the lead of the league right now. Why does it say we have 6 losses we only have 5 scarsdale panas greely briarcliff and north salem. It doesnt make sense

  16. Knight fan

This isn’t the power rankings it’s what the seeds would be if the season ended now.

  17. jfk player

and if the season ended today kennedy would win the league, would lakeland still get the 3 even if kennedy wins the league?

  18. fan

could u update the class a seedings after tonights games?
what do u think about the games this saturday with new ro and poughkeesie and the big panas lakeland rivalry ?
anybody know the score of the fox lane kennedy game
