Friday’s (endless) action

January
26

A monstrous night of games after exams week resulted in some interesting scores.

Here’s a quick look:

The Biggies…
New Rochelle 92, White Plains 84, 3OT

I say this without hesitation: this was the craziest basketball I’ve seen in a few years.

This game was drastically different from the other two triple OT games I witnessed this season — Stepinac-Briarcliff and Roosevelt-Mamaroneck. This one had far more momentum swings than those two. Plus, the star power and the importance of this game was a little higher.

It was sloppy through the first three quarters. Here’s the gist of what happened:

— New Rochelle rallied from 11 points down in the second quarter to take a halftime lead.
— The Huguenots comeback from a nine-point hole in the third.
— White Plains was down nine with under two minutes to play in the first OT and came back when Sean Kilpatrick went to the line for three shots and .4 seconds left after getting “fouled” on a halfcourt shot. Trailing by two, he made the first, missed the second and, after a long delay because of a scoreboard error, he drained the third.
— New Rochelle was then down six in the second OT and force a third on John Calarco’s fade-away 3-pointer near the buzzer.
— Finally, after nearly three hours of miracle shots, a million missed free throws and telling the people around me “the game is over” about a dozen times, it actually ended.

When I go to games, I usually sit quietly and rarely jump out of my seat over a shot or an officials call. I did it endlessly in this game.

What did this game mean? Well, it probably secured New Rochelle’s fate as a Top 3 seed, regardless of what happens against Mount Vernon on Thursday. At worst, the Huguenots will split with Scarsdale and Poughkeepsie. Either way, they’ll probably be a 3 or 4 seed, maybe even the 2.

It also should rejuvenate White Plains. I know, there are no moral victories. But if New Rochelle is actually the second best team in Class AA, White Plains isn’t far behind. Don’t be shocked if the Tigers to beat New Rochelle when they host the Huguenots in two weeks.
North Salem 63, Kennedy 55: A season-changing win for the Tigers, who are riding an 11-game streak and are clearly a contender to Briarcliff in Class B. Kennedy nearly beat Briarcliff just last week, so this is a telling barometer. Marc Miller had 25 points and 27 rebounds. North Salem is the hottest team in Section 1 outside of Peekskill.
Blind Brook 46, Tuckahoe 32: In quite possibly the best defensive effort I’ve seen this season, the Trojans held Robert Johnson to eight points and cemented themselves as the top team in Class C. I was thoroughly impressed with this Blind Brook team. It’s deep, it’s big, it protects the ball and, most of all, it defends like no other team in Section 1. I mean that. After last night, I don’t only think this team has the potential to win the section. I could see it winning in Glens Falls. Aside from having a dominant scorer, this team isn’t missing anything. And the Trojans have won plenty in the past without somebody putting up 20 a game.
Gorton 76, Roosevelt 62: A huge upset as far as playoff seeds go. But it’s not much of a surprise if you’ve ever followed the Yonkers rivalries. Roosevelt was 13-2 coming in and had gotten outstanding play from Winston Graham. But a huge fourth quarter by Chris Ranglin (33 points) and Gorton broke open a back-and-forth contest.

Other significant scores…
Mount St. Michael 50, Stepinac 40: Not that surprising since the Crusaders were playing without Tony Taylor, who was serving a league suspension for being ejected from their previous game. Taylor scored 38 points the last time these teams met, which Stepinac won in overtime. Mount actually trailed by a point entering the fourth quarter. To even keep it within 10 points without Taylor is actually a good step for a team that must find other scoring options to be contenders in the CHSAA A Division.
Pleasantville 50, Byram Hills 44: Another incredible defensive performance by the Panthers. I’ll be at Monday’s game with Croton and I’m anxious to see how this Pleasantville defense matches up with Blind Brooks. To only let Jason Mendell score 17 points, and not make a 3-pointer, is an accomplishment. Danny Bramswig had 16 in the victory.
Race for Rockland: Tappan Zee staked its claim as the county’s top team, knocking off my favorite for that title, Spring Valley, 67-63. A huge victory for the Dutchmen, who are another big win away from separating themselves from the middle of the pack in Class A. They’ve had a few hiccups but they seem to know how to dig in and win games of this magnitude. Ryan Sheridan had 25 points and Brian Connolly added 22. … Pearl River (14-2) escaped a furious fourth-quarter comeback attempt by Sleepy Hollow and hung on for a 60-54 win. The Pirates led by 15 entering the final period. Rob Ferreira had 19 points in the win. … Nyack dealt Horace Greeley a 64-53 defeat. Kivar Thurman had 18 points, and Brian Jones added 12 points and 13 rebounds. … Ramapo shockingly beat Suffern, dropping the Mounties to 10-6 overall. … North Rockland edged Clarkstown North, 51-49, on Jeff Jackson’s game-winner with seven seconds left.
Mahopac tournament: Lakeland outlasted Ossining in overtime, 64-63, when Keith Rodriguez put back a missed shot with three seconds to play. Lavor Morris had 23 points in the victory as Lakeland won its third straight. … A.J. Rasulo scored 20 points as Mahopac beat Hackley by eight. Mike Cirocco added 11 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Mahopac faces Lakeland tournament for the tournament championship.

Random thoughts: Panas got 22 points from the underrated Michael Pagan and beat Beacon by 14. … David Zaitz didn’t play but Scarsdale still rolled past Carmel. … Reigning Class C champion Hamilton inched closer to a playoff berth with a win over Children’s Village. They have to win three of their final six games (Rye Neck, Schechter, Leake & Watts, Tuckahoe, Dobbs Ferry, and Pawling). … Andre Pope scored 18 points as Iona Prep beat Fordham Prep for its 11th straight win. … Kevin Adams scored 20 points as Brewster handled John Jay. … Yorktown halted Fox Lane’s winning streak with a 60-54 victory. … Keio beat Haldane, 44-42. Tough loss for the Blue Devils, who need to put together a winning streak to make the playoffs in C. … Lourdes topped Hen Hud, 44-27. … Arlington beat Ketcham by 18. … RCDS beat Masters in OT. … Pelham beat Woodlands, 43-39, in another strong defensive effort. … Yonkers’ remarkable season continued with a win over Sacred Heart. Yonkers is now 8-8 and a playoff team, after going winless the previous two season. … Lincoln beat Saunders by 23. … Salesian upended Hawthorne-CK.

Took me a little under an hour. Maybe some errors but hey I tried. I don’t know about tiebreakers, and Lourdes confused me with only 15 games scheduled so I didn’t include them.

Records are overall records. I took out non-sec.1 games to do the numbers of course.

    1. Peekskill (15-0) We know they’re 1.
    2. Pearl River (13-2) 3.53
    3. Port Chester (10-5) 3.08
    3. Lakeland (9-4) 3.08
    5. Tappan Zee (10-5) 3.00
    6. Eastchester (11-4) 2.85
    7. Kennedy (9-5) 2.77
    8. Byram Hills (8-6) 2.5
    9. Panas (9-6) 2.47
    9. Brewster (8-7) 2.47
    11. Ardsley (8-6) 2.29
    12. Rye (7-6) 2.15
    13. Spring Valley (8-7) 2.10
    14. Pelham (8-7) 2.0

Albertus beat Nanuet today 45-33 behind 19 points from Pat Fuchs. Albertus is now 9-6 and are starting to get on a roll after winning 4 in a row. They have a big game against Hastings on Wednesday and its important not to have a let down game

  3. rileygirl

Mike Coburn, Great game this eve.One big shot after another. Unlike SJU, Rutgers has a nice thing going. Mike got a little “ink” as well. Benjamin is playing well himself

kevin, i am a mount fan and feel you give too much credit to stepinac.when stepinac lost to iona on last friday you said ,and go back and read it,in the chsaa it is tough to win on the road on friday night.o k mount beats stepinac at stepinac and i know you man TT is not playing but lets give mount some credit.have you seen mount play this year?also tony taylor must learn to control his emotions.i do not think GW is too happy with him.

  5. Hoop Fan

    mr volo

mount is a non-factor…got blown out by Iona Prep and Stepinac without TT is like coffee without the coffee grinds

isnt it early bird special or something? GW not happy with TT…lay off the hot toties!

I have to admit that I needed to walk out of the NR/WP game with 45 seconds left in the first overtime and White Plains down by 7 and New Ro going to the line. I say that I had to walk out because it may have been one of the worst officiated games I have seen in a long time. First let me say this, I went into the gym with no intention of routing for either team, I just wanted to see a good game. After 5 minutes I had to favor WP only because in my opinion the refs were making some bad calls against WP. Why New Rochelle uses 3 refs is there choice, but for some reason when you have a Mo,Larry and Curley show going on it appears like the refs want to make a statement early and announce their presence and let everyone know they are in charge. Give me a break, there had to be a dozen offensive charge calls in the first half and 8 of them could have been no calls at all. James for WP ended up with 30 and fouled out in the first overtime. I think he was called with 4 charges and maybe 1 was real. The kid was having a great game and could have had 50 if hey let him play, the Refs ruined it for him, horrible. I don’t know what it is about NR home court but there appears to be some strange happenings be it a broken clock when the opposing team is at the foul line and no time left, a fire alarm going off when the other team is about to pull away or 3 Refs who are doing everything possible to keep the home team in the game. In a way I am disappointed I missed the end, but I had to leave that gym because of the poor officiating.

Lourdes is 9-3 losing to Peekskill, Poughkeepsie, and Panas in OT. Three wins were in a christmas tourn. against Dover, Ketchum, and Webutuk. My kids schedule has six more games listed, which would only make a total of 18. The lourdes boys soccer team played one too many games, and were D/Qed from sectionals, maybe the AD is afraid of making the same mistake, and only scheduled 18 games, just to be safe.

  8. Traveler

In an earlier post it stated that TZ just looked past Albertus and they lost well I’ll tell you what this Albertus team is playing very solid basketball. They struggled early but look to be playing well at the right time. They dominated TZ for most of the game in the Nanuet Championship without their starting center and also beat a rival in Nanuet today. They could be a very dangerous team come section time.

  9. go rockland

Rockland teams will make noise in A and B.

  10. section1

Tz beat albertus and beat pearl river alberrtus was dominated by pearl river tz also beat pleasentville which is better than albertus.

  11. go rockland

    secninecomment

I thought teams needed 20 games on the schedule?

Can you help clear this up Kev.

  12. A rockland fan....

Albertus outplayed Tappan Zee in their second matchup (TZ won in OT the first time around). I wouldn’t use the term dominated. Albertus does seem poised to get on a roll right now—on offense they can work it inside or out and have some bench strength. Agree that they will be a very dangerous team come sectionals.

  13. mr volo

hoop fan, all i am saying is TT should learn how to control his emotions, maybe i went too far.lets see how season plays out.

  14. Traveler

TZ beat Albertus in double overtime I believe when two of Albertus’s guards couldnt play and had to have a jv call up play decent minutes. TZ’s lack of size seems to hurt them against some teams. While Albertus isnt very big, they have a few players who can score in the paint and TZ really has no one to defend them.

  15. Been Around

Teams can play a maximum of twenty games there is no rule that says twenty must be played

  16. go rockland

TZ’s center sat out the PC and PR games and played only a few minutes in the Albertus game. Probably had some type of injury.

  17. con10der

The only reason that albertus beat tz is because tz used up all of their gas the day before in their battle with pr. TZ couldnt have cared less about that game and only cared about the pr game the previous day.

  18. HSHoops

I have to agree with spacecadet. Kevin, how could you not mention the officiating in that new ro-wp game? it felt like it was drastically one sided (the foul on the kilpatrick play was a maybe). also, the 2nd foul on kilpatrick (with about 6 or 7 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter) was a phantom call and had it not be made WP would’ve likely gone into the half up by 10-15 points.

cmon kevin lets hear what you have to say on this….

  19. Kevin Devaney Jr.

I was waiting to see what people wrote about the officiating in this game before offering my thoughts. Here they are:

I understand how difficult it is to be a referee and have made it a policy not blast officials unless it is truly warranted. It’s a thankless job and I cannot believe anybody would ever want to do it. I cannot fathom it actually.

I will say, however, that the officiating on the White Plains-New Rochelle game was not good. I’m not sure why. The game had three veteran refs who are all pretty good. One is among the best. The problem in this game centered around the frenetic pace and sloppiness the teams played at. An ugly game like this lends itself to bad officiating. This game was very, very ugly at times. I felt both teams were more concerned with getting calls and looking for those calls than actually playing basketball. That killed the game.

Did it decide the game? Possibly. But I watched both coaches very closely throughout as calls were made. Never before I can honestly say that BOTH coaches believed they were getting screwed over. Usually it’s one or the other. BOTH did in this one. Sadly, I think that’s a good thing.

Every coach says that they don’t care if the refs aren’t good, as long as they’re consistent. Technically, these guys were.

As I said, these are three of the better guys you’ll find. If you want to pick apart plays in the game and kill them for that, go ahead. But you can do that on just about any game and every official. I wouldn’t blame these as much as I would blame the flow and style of the game itself.

  20. falcon alum

I was at both Albertus-TZ games this year. In the first game, Albertus’s best defender and another guard that gets significant minutes missed the game due to injuries. Albertus led the whole game and probably should have won but TZ found a way to pull it out in OT which is wut good teams due so you have to give them credit.

    con10der,
If you want to say the TZ players were tired from the day before ill agree with you there. they just looked gassed and Sheridan shot a number of air balls. But dont tell me that they didnt care about the Championship game of a tournament. If they didnt care about winning the tournament they would have packed it in the day before and lossed to PR. The fact is they were dominated in the paint and had no one to stop Fuchs and Leroy inside. Albertus was up by double digits pretty much the entire game.

  21. .......

If you want to get technical, the new ro white plains game was called evenly both ways. Being a new Rochelle fan maybe im jaded, but it actually felt more one sided towards wp. In the end of regulation how about Kilpatrick’s half court violation. Everyone from the New Ro stands could clearly see his foot go over and then go back, and this would have ended the game, yet their was no call. Also that desperation shot by kilpatrick and the bail out foul they gave him. They almost gave wp the game. Almost every fan in the New Rochelle stands was livid with the refs.

  22. .....

    Volo,

you are such an idiot…You must be the other bonehead in disquise.

  23. lousy referees

I’ve heard that excuse before for bad refereeing…Sloppy play or bad teams?...If there are never any mistakes, then I could be the ref and swallow the whistle. The problem is, and it has been said out here before, is that some of the refs have been at this far too long and can not keep up with the action…..A good ref can distinguish between a charging foul and a blocking foul. Good refs can spot a carry or travelling violation, even if they are happening on every possession, and make the call…The quality of the teams or the game has nothing to do with the quality of the refereeing.

  24. Facts

leave mr volo alone. he said he was a 1950’s mt st michael graduate now living in florida. Only boneheads would post as …...

  25. HSHoops

It was 10 fouls (on WP) to 1 (on New Ro) at one point in the first half. The call at the end of regulation for Kilpatrick was dicey but New Ro truly had the home court advantage in this game.

  26. IomaPower

No need to insult an older person in Mr. Volo who does not make inflammatory comments.

Mr. Volo- You might want to check out this link so you can follow Mount St. Michael from Florida a little easier.

  27. Adjustments

At Nanuet that is in fact the case, TZ was beaten by Magnus in the late game in the paint. The paint should have been shut down perhaps by a zone that required Magnus to continue what was excellent outside shooting to ice the game. Got to pick your poison but giving up the paint almost always is the wrong choice. Adjustments were never made and to have the best rebounder on the floor at that time for TZ at the point in a pressure half court defense (that did little) but wear them down further did not make much sense. It opened up the weakness in the paint even further. The put backs and easy layups in the paint killed TZ in the latter part of the game. A major factor also was the outside shooting of the Magnus bench and the foul shooting in the clutch that was not there in the PR game for PR. TZ wanted that win that is a yes but they did not get it and the credit goes to Magnus.

  28. james casey

After reading Con10dor comments about Tappan Zee players “couldn’t care less about playing”in their loss to Albertus Magnus,I had to comment. I was at that game and the Albertus Magnus team played a great game in beating TZ.
However, for someone to say that TZ players like Sheridan,Connolly,Missalle,Desposati, etc. don’t care about a game is a joke. These kids give it all they have and make no excuses and play hard all the time. Maybe Con10dor didn’t see the Spring Valley game the other night when TZ was down and game back strong against a tough Spring Valley team and won. Coaches Gaines/Linehan/Cromer don’t allow their players to play with”couldn’t care less”attitude.Maybe it is because of the strong Tappan Zee boys team the last two years that other teams are coming in playing harder to shut down the Dutchmen.

  29. mr volo

facts, thank you for kind words.if i can spell your name, you are in my will.i will be at mount, hayes game on feb 5th.i do not mind being called an idoit, but lets give a name.even in the 50’s we were taught that.also kevin,i do not think you should post any e mails without names.

  30. mr volo

    iona power,thank you.

  31. golden knight

Unbiased have watched both albertus and tz play over the last two years tz has overachieved and albertus has underachieved that is the truth. Those kids play just as hard as any team I have seen. At the tournament tz played flat but lost tried zone full court pressure and tried many differnt adjustments. However beating pearl river a far superior team to albertus and just knocking off spring valley is a credit to them.
