Class B seeds

January
24

A very reliable Class B coach took the time this week to figure out the conference’s current seedings. And he thankfully passed them along.

Here they are, through Wednesday’s action. In parentheses are the teams records, as well as their POINT INDEX, which is calculated by taking Section 1 games played, giving four points for each victory — and adding an extra point for wins over Class A and two points for wins over AA teams. Then you divide by Section 1 games played:

1. Briarcliff (12-2; 4.45455)
2. North Salem (10-1, 4.27273)
3. Dobbs Ferry (11-3, 3.14286)
4. Irvington (10-4, 3.0000)
5. Pleasantville (9-5, 2.85714)
6. Albertus Magnus (8-6, 2.64286)
7. Lincoln Hall (8-5, 2.58333)

Now, here’s where it gets tricky. Hastings has qualified for the postseason. Bronxville and Pawling haven’t met the requirements, but actually have a higher index.

8. *Bronxville (7-5, 2.54545)
9. *Pawling (5-4, 2.50)
10. Hastings (8-6, 2.23077)
11. *Nanuet (7-8, 2.00)
12. *Croton (5-7, 1.66667)
13. *Rye Neck (5-9, 1.53846)
14. *Edgemont (4-9, 1.30769)
15. *Westlake (3-10, 0.92308)
16. *Woodlands (3-9, 0.72727)
17. *Putnam Valley (2-11, 0.61538)
18. *Dover (1-11, .44444)

Note: Teams with a * next to their names have not qualified for sectionals.

  2. fan

hastings is 8-6 and does that change them

  3. falcon alum

    Hoops

It depends how many teams actually make the playoffs and the final decision is made at the seeding meetings.

  4. Been Around

    Kevin,

Valhalla is a Class C school.

  5. Arthur

How exactly is Hastings, with their 1-5 conference record, already in the playoffs?

  6. falcon alum

    Arthur,

They have 8 wins. A team only has to fulfill one of the requirments to make the playoffs. Hastings wouldnt be anywhere near the playoffs without their powderpuff schedule. I think they are playing my brothers CYO team next week.

  7. Hoops

    falcon alum

Your Brothers CYO team must not be very good!

  8. falcon alum

Actually the have 1 win all year. Sounds right up Hastings ally. haha

  9. Bball Hastings

thats messed up falcon alum, we might not be the best team but we’ll play harder because of stupid assholes like you saying dumb things.

  10. falcon alum

dude we’re just havin some fun. i actually like some of the guys on ur team. farragher is nice and skrelji is pretty good. im actually stumped as to y u guys cant win a game against a decent team.

  11. Kevin Devaney Jr.

My apologies for the Valhalla mistake. I fixed it. My source led me astray! It’s cool.

  12. falcon alum

I’m thinking that to qualify for the playoffs a team should have to have an index of 2 or higher. I think that would be better than the current system. Just my opinion tho.

  13. bball

so schools without the * are def in?

  14. falcon alum

    Bball,

    thats correct

  15. Sour Grapes

    Falcon alum:

look no further than the sideline for your answer. While McFadden is a coach who gets the most out of his players, Hurlie has turned a program that was a fixture at the County Center into a second tier program that loads up on powderpuffs. He has had one winning season (thanks to a 6’8” center) in five, and he is not even a teacher in Hastings. It is surprising that he is still there, considering the line of quality coaches that preceded him: Di Gennaro, Delle Bovi and Ward.

The current team has plenty of talent, more than most teams they play. Farragher and Skrelji and both fine players, Blicker gives them a second, athletic 6’4”+ player and Pacheco is a fast point guard who can shoot. And Keith fagan claims most of the scrubs played on his AAU team! No reason, other than coaching, for the team to be so weak every year.

  16. Gold Ball

    Here it comes!

As predicted in week 2 when Hastings was winning and their fans were talking the talk, the ladder part of the season would end with the Hastings “faithful” throwing the coach under the bus and blaming him for the meltdown!

    too funny!

  17. basketball2315

Kevin, Where are the Class A seeds? can you do the Class A seeds

  18. Kevin Devaney Jr.

Guys, I’ll post the Class A seedings shortly. It’s an arduous process so give me some time.

  19. hoops

    gold ball:

since when is falcon alum a hastings fan?

  20. Gold Ball

    hoops

Not falcon alum…Sour Grapes seems to be a less than happy Hastings fan.

  21. Been Around

    Sour Grapes,

Name the staff member in the Hastings school district, that should be coaching the team. With the “tradition” of Hastings basketball you would think there would be at least one Hastings staff member that would want to coach. Where does your baseball coach teach??By the way Delle Bovi and Ward were not teachers in the school either. Since when was being a teacher in the school a prerequisite for being a successful coach. I can name dozens of coaches that don;t teach in the school district where they coach. Maybe the hastings staff members know something no one else does. Hastings is lucky to have Dennis Hurlie as there coach. They should really be concerned about coming into the 21st century and hiring a full time AD.
Having seen Hastings play I can say this while they have a strong staring five, there bench is a little weak, and isn’t easier to criticize than give credit. Get a life

  22. Reality check

The point about being a teacher is a refence to the silly section one rule that gives priority to coaching candidiates from within….If any teacher wanted the job, they could force the basketball coach out…It happened in Rockland county baseball last spring. I think it was Nyack…

  23. facts

Sounds like been around definetly has been around Hastings. Lets face it, Hastings has a couple of pieces and beyond that not much else. The pieces are good(not great) but are a bit up and down in terms of consistency.

A “true” High School Big Man cannot play against Irvington which has no interior presence to speak of, offensively or defensively and average 1.5 points over two games(3 and 0). No excuses! Dont tell me about a zone defense either. Go get on the offensive glass and put the ball in the hole!

    Its not the coach!

  24. golden night

    Quick Question Kevin

I work in a New Jersey school district and coach basketball. Every year Bergen County holds a tournament for the top 20-25 teams. It doesn’t matter what size you are, every team in Bergen has an opportunity to play in it. Its some of the best high school basketball you will get to see. I use to go to school in rockland, why doesn’t rockland have a tournament? I think it will be great for the county

  25. Gold Ball

Didnt Rockland just have 3 Tournaments with PR, TZ, Magnus and either Nanuet or NR in them?

  26. Reality check

A tournament like that in Westchester would settle the questions about which teams are the best in the county between the CHSAA schools and the section 1 schools

  27. Been Around

    Reality Check

There is no such “Section One Rule” when it comes to hiring coaches within a district. It is a district by district policy that is usually negotiated into the teachers union contracts that in house teachers be given first crack at coaching jobs, if they are qualified.
I guess Hastings does not have any in house candidates. So everyone should just get off of Coach Hurlie’s back

  28. BigBadBear

one thing about the point index is that you get no points for playing out-of-section NYS teams….so, if for example, you have a weak league schedule, and you try to supplement with non-section 1 teams, you get no benefit in the seeding formualas…so it only pays to play up locally, one or two AA or A wins for a B team can make a big difference

  29. Been Around

    Big Bad Bear,

great point I just checked if my math is right and both Briarcliff and North Salem win out (A little harder for North Salem with JFK and John Jay CR on the schedule), Briarcliff will be the #1 seed at 4.37 to North Salem’s 4.35

  30. Gold Ball

    Tonights game…

    North Salem vs. JFK and
    Mondays…
Briarcliff vs. Byram Hills… both represent potential 5 point wins.

The outcome of these two games will go a long way to deciding who will be the #1 and #2 seeds in Class B !

  31. BigBadBear

    been around:

and I guess, Bears get no “points” for beating Stepanic….

  32. BigBadBear

    Gold Ball:

let’s see if they fixed the clock at JFK….

  33. Gold Ball

    Big Bad Bear

Points for beating Stepinac = 0…

    Dr. E = willing to give his 2 cents…

    Clock at JFK = Priceless….

  34. section 1 bball

well pville showed a lot tonite going into byram hills and winning, a team effort should prove to some teams to look out for the panthers

  35. steve

North Salem defeats JFK big, NORTH SALEM ALL THE WAY!

  36. Dr E

2 cents? If I had known I was worth that I would have contributed my 2 cents toward a new clock for Kennedy or a bus ride to Iona Prep for them.

  37. baller

These class B playoffs are gona be awesome

  38. Pirate Pride

While the falcons have a nice little record at 9 and 6 what people dont know is that they are truly underachieving with mcfadden at the helm. his lack of talent knowledge as a coach hinders the play of the stars on the team. Players on this team are capable of scoring 20 a game if he let them be free on offense instead of putting shackles on them and running offense through his who is nothing put a good spot up shooter who should be a very good 8th man on any team that is destined for the county center. so what im basically saying is the falcons are trash and should be in class D for all i care
