Sorry I didn’t post anything about yesterday’s games sooner. I’ve had a terrible cold the last two days and have spent most of my time sleeping and sneezing.
Let’s start with one of the wildest games of the seasons from last night:
Scarsdale 79, Mamaroneck 78, 2OT
I can’t imagine losing two multiple overtime games in a season, let alone two in the span of three days. But that’s what the Tigers have done.
Their bid to hand Scarsdale its first loss of the season was certainly a controversial one. Mamaroneck, which trailed by 15 in the second half, had the ball under its own basket with 15 seconds left and down by a point. Tigers coach Tyrone Carver called his final timeout and drew up a play. When the ball was inbounded to the top of the key, one official blew the whistle and everyone stopped. He said it was an “inadvertent whistle” and that Mamaroneck would retain the ball.
The problem was that the Tigers now had to inbound on the side, not under the basket where the play was drawn up. With no timeouts, the Tigers were helpless. Mamaroneck inbounded the ball and didn’t get a good shot and lost in double overtime, two days after falling in triple overtime at home to Roosevelt.
Scarsdale deserves a lot of credit, too. David Zaitz fouled out late in the fourth quarter with 17 points. Yet point guard Evan Livingston, who rarely shoots, scored 16 of his 35 points in the overtime periods.
Taylon Mondshein had 24 points for Mamaroneck, which needs tomorrow night’s win over Woodlands to ensure a playoff spot in Class AA.
Stepinac 86, Blessed Sacrament 68: Tony Taylor had 28 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds as the Crusaders won following a long layoff. Good all-around effort by Stepinac, which also got 13 points and eight rebounds from newcomer Conroy Baltimore, and 10 points apiece from Maurice Daniels, Eddie Byrne and Corey Francis.
Kennedy 69, Brewster 54: It seems the Gaels are really hitting their stride after a few tough losses in the first half. Craig Trabulsy had 18 points, and Vincent Tancora added 17 as Kennedy broke this game open in the fourth quarter.
John Jay 69, Horace Greeley 68: The Indians need Kevin Drew to have big games in order for them to win and they certainly got that yesterday. Drew had 20 points and 11 assists, and Anthony Iacomini added 19 points.
Panas 86, Lourdes 82, OT: Quality win for the Panthers, who got 23 points from Devon Tucker, who was 14 of 18 at the line. Michael Pagan added 21.
Iona Prep 68, Bishop Ford 62: A major statement victory for the Gaels. Ford beat Stepinac earlier this season and edged Mount St. Michael last week. It’s even more impressive when you consider the lack of size Iona has compared to a big, physical Ford squad. Bryan Voelkel had 25 points and 11 rebounds.
Tappan Zee 88, Harrison 67: Brian Connolly hit seven 3-pointers and scored 28 points, and Ryan Sheridan added 24.
Port Chester 85, Spring Valley 62: Another huge effort from Jordan Henriquez, who had 23 points, 13 rebounds and 10 blocks. Lou Larizza added 20 points and six assists. The Rams need him to be more of a scorer to compete with the top teams. I was surprised this game wasn’t closer.
Roosevelt 76, Clinton 53: Winston Graham scored 27 points as Roosevelt improved to 10-2. Graham is getting more comfortable every game.
Random thoughts: Mookie Jones scored 18 points as Peekskill beat Hen Hud to remain undefeated. … Fox Lane edged Lakeland to improve to 4-1 in the league. Arlington held Mahopac to 26 points and won handily. … Poughkeepsie romped past a struggling Beacon team. … John Jay-EF, Clarkstown South, Pawling and Yorktown all posted double-digit victories.

agree or disagree?
Iona Power,
I think you thought the Bishop Ford game was going to be a loss. Iona Prep is really coming together now. Look out.
Iona will beat Hayes…..Now that Pope is back at full strength the team has all the tools to compete with any team that doesn’t have a legitimate big inside presence. That means all teams but a select few…... I watched Hayes vs Briarcliff and watched the Iona vs Briarcliff scrimmage and believe the Iona depth on the bench that proved too much for Briarcliff will also wear down Hayes. Hayes relies heavily on 2 players. A very quick guard and a 250lb lumbering center…
Iona is a top 5 local team this season to my surprise….I figured they would have to wait until next season to be in the top 5 , but they have arrived faster than expected….
..
anyone see this Conroy Baltimore play for Stepinac? Is he moved up from the JV or Freshman team?
Iona Prep has been playing great since Andre Pope returned from his wrist injury- Bishop Ford has already beaten Mount, Hayes and Stepinac. Bishop Ford has a Junior Point Guard who has committed to Hofstra that is on the same level as Tony Taylor.
Iona still has a rough stretch left in their season as they still have to play 6 games against Stepinac, Mount and Hayes. If they go 4-2 it will set them up well for the playoffs. Who knows maybe Iona could meet Peekskill in the Federation down the line.
Now you are talking Iona Power…...I was trying to tell you about this Iona team last week…It will not be easy, but Iona, this year could win the CHSAA A division….At minimum, be in a 3 way fight with Hayes and Ford…....Stepinac is outside looking in this year….......Iona is right behind Mt Vernon, Peekskill, White Plains and New Rochelle in Westchester in my opinion…..
Wait a Second
Iona has really turned up their defense over the last 5 games- Next Friday against Stepinac is going to be a nasty encounter. I will be interested to see how Iona plays Tony Taylor.
IonaPower
I can tell you how Iona will play Tony Taylor. Jordan Bronner straight up man to man…..These two kids grew up together in Sleepy Hollow..No introductions needed…We all know about Taylor after the Slam Dunk….But let me tell you that Bronner is quite an able defensive player as you will see next Friday.
Sleepy Follow
Bronner did a great defensive job on Chz Williams from Ford who has already committed to Hofstra as a junior. Bronner is only a sophomore so he has a bright future.
Iona Power
Bronner is sophomore and so is Voelkel, Carissimo, Savage and Mack….I am not sure if their best effort will be next season with Pope or in 2 years with these 5 sophs….....In any event, they will compete this year and the next to years for sure…...As hard as it is to win CHSAA “A” , I expect at least one championship with this group….
Sleepy Follow
Iona has a shot over the next three years- I think by beating Bishop Ford they proved they can compete with the very best in the CHSAA A. The key this year is how the 5 sophomores react to the pressure during the playoffs.
Now that Tony Taylor is leaving, i think Stepinac Has a good shot to contend. Next season, the talent will be equally share- not juss by one person.
They will have players able to take over a game in Thomas Decker, Richard Whitten and Maurice Daniels as well as very much needed role players in Conroy Baltimore, Kareem Pancis, and Eddie Burns. The team next year will have great shooters as well as good one on one physical defenders in Eddie Burn, Kareem Pancis, and Idia Ogala. Rebounders will also be a BIG difference from next year. Conroy Baltimore is already 6 foot 4 and is getting stronger making hima an outstanding rebounder. Joshua Powell, Idia Ogala, and Kevaughn Barnes are also rebounders when they want to be.
Overall, with strong players in diff area(not juss one ALL-STAR) STEPINAC BASKETBALL should on top of High School basketball for years to come….YEAA that includes kickin ionas ass…..lol
